  1. So we're going to read from Luke chapter 23 starting at verse 26 down to verse 34.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  2. Luke 23 starting at verse 26.

  3. As the soldiers led Jesus away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country,

  4. and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.

  5. A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.

  6. Jesus turned and said to them,

  7. Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me.

  8. Weep for yourselves and for your children.

  9. For the time will come when you will say,

  10. Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.

  11. Then they will say to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills, cover us.

  12. For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?

  13. Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.

  14. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there along with the criminals,

  15. one on his right, the other on his left.

  16. Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

  17. And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

  18. I'm going to ask Martin to come up.

  19. Martin is a good friend, personal friend, and a friend to many of us here.

  20. So we welcome you. It's good to have Alwyn as well today.

  21. So, over to you, Mr. Kingman.

  22. You might like to keep that passage open in front of you this morning as we look at this together.

  23. It's good to be back with you again and a joy to be with you.

  24. But more than that, a privilege to open up God's Word and to share it with you this morning.

  25. People have long been fascinated with the last words of the rich and famous.

  26. Apparently, Elvis Presley's last words to the audience at his very final concert were,

  27. I hope I haven't bored you.

  28. Reflecting on his life's work, Leonardo da Vinci said,

  29. I have offended both God and mankind because my work did not reach the quality it should have.

  30. It's hard to believe, isn't it, that those whose abilities were recognised by so many

  31. could be left at the end of their lives feeling as though they had achieved so little.

  32. Well, the Gospels contain some of the last words of the Lord Jesus.

  33. But rather than being filled with remorse and regret and uncertainty,

  34. we find many of the last words of Jesus are filled with confidence, with purpose and with certainty.

  35. Now, there are seven of these moments on the cross and the passage that we read this morning contains the first of these.

  36. It's a prayer and you'll find it in verse 34.

  37. Jesus says,

  38. Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.

  39. A plot to kill Jesus has been forming for some time.

  40. The Jewish religious leaders can't get rid of Jesus quickly enough.

  41. Jesus has been put on trial, falsely accused and condemned to death,

  42. even though he is not guilty of any crime.

  43. But here is Jesus, and rather than longing for his own vindication,

  44. he is praying for the people responsible for his death.

  45. Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.

  46. What we witness here is, first of all, the fulfilment of prophecy.

  47. Much of the life of the Lord Jesus had been foretold and foreshadowed in the Old Testament.

  48. The prophets had spoken of the place and manner of his birth,

  49. but even more so, the Old Testament had spoken graphically about the nature of his death.

  50. We sang earlier that song, Man of Sorrows, pointing us to Isaiah 53,

  51. where we read of one who was despised and rejected by man.

  52. One who took up our pain and bore our suffering.

  53. One who was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities.

  54. One who, we're told, was cut off from the land of the living.

  55. And at the very end of that chapter, Isaiah writes,

  56. he poured out his life unto death

  57. and was numbered with the transgressors.

  58. Now maybe at some point in your life,

  59. you have been numbered with the transgressors.

  60. A couple of your classmates have got up to mischief in the classroom.

  61. The teacher arrives back and wants to know what has gone on.

  62. Of course your friends don't un-up.

  63. And what happens?

  64. Well, the whole class get into trouble.

  65. You're treated as though you have done something wrong,

  66. even though you have done nothing wrong.

  67. That's what Isaiah is saying here about Jesus.

  68. He is numbered with the transgressors.

  69. Even though he has done nothing wrong,

  70. he's treated as though he were a criminal.

  71. He's completely innocent.

  72. And he's treated as though he were guilty.

  73. Here's how Luke recorded in the passage that we read.

  74. Two other men, both criminals,

  75. were also led out with him to be executed.

  76. And when they came to the place called the skull,

  77. they crucified him there along with the criminals.

  78. One on his right and one on his left.

  79. You see, Jesus was numbered with the transgressors.

  80. Now, as the Gospels recount the trials of Jesus,

  81. it's pointed out over and over and over again

  82. that Jesus was innocent of any crimes.

  83. You ever Pilate's wife pleading with him?

  84. Don't have anything to do with that innocent man.

  85. Pilate tells Jesus' accusers,

  86. you brought this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion.

  87. I have examined him in your presence

  88. and have found no basis for the charges against him

  89. and neither has Herod's.

  90. Pilate finally washes his hands in front of the crowd

  91. who continue to call for his crucifixion

  92. and declares, I am innocent of this man's blood.

  93. Pilate.

  94. Yet here Jesus is,

  95. numbered with the transgressors.

  96. Now, anyone should be able to see

  97. that this is the greatest injustice.

  98. And yet it is the very reason

  99. that Jesus had come into the world.

  100. to die in the place of sinners,

  101. to take the judgment that we deserved upon himself,

  102. to die in our place,

  103. to be numbered

  104. with the transgressors.

  105. But if all that we can see

  106. is the injustice of the crucifixion,

  107. we have yet to understand

  108. the good news of the Christian message.

  109. Because the good news is

  110. this very injustice.

  111. Jesus was numbered with the transgressors.

  112. Jesus took the place of sinners

  113. so that you and I

  114. could be forgiven

  115. for our sins.

  116. But Jesus is not only numbered with the transgressors.

  117. We see him interceding

  118. for the transgressors.

  119. The prophet Isaiah continues,

  120. for he bore the sin of many

  121. and made intercession

  122. for the transgressors.

  123. Now, to intercede is to

  124. go between,

  125. to plead on another's behalf

  126. as a lawyer would argue

  127. his client's case before a judge.

  128. And isn't that exactly

  129. what Jesus is doing on the cross

  130. as he prays,

  131. Father,

  132. forgive them

  133. for they do not know

  134. what they are doing.

  135. He is interceding

  136. for the transgressors.

  137. In fact, Jesus' death

  138. is the very foundation

  139. on which this request

  140. can even be made.

  141. Jesus can make this request

  142. because he is dying

  143. in the place of sinners.

  144. He's not asking God

  145. to ignore their sin.

  146. He's not asking God

  147. to turn his back

  148. on this injustice.

  149. He's not asking God

  150. to pretend

  151. that this never happened.

  152. No, Jesus is interceding

  153. for the transgressors.

  154. He is pleading

  155. for the forgiveness

  156. of sinners.

  157. sinners.

  158. And he can make

  159. such a request

  160. because he is

  161. taking their place.

  162. He's taking the judgment

  163. that they deserve.

  164. He's taking the judgment

  165. that you

  166. and I

  167. deserve.

  168. Now it's only

  169. when we grasp that

  170. that we understand

  171. the Christian message.

  172. The apostle Paul

  173. would describe Jesus

  174. as the son of God

  175. who loved me

  176. and gave himself

  177. for me.

  178. The apostle Paul

  179. had come to understand

  180. that the death

  181. of Jesus

  182. on the cross

  183. is the very death

  184. that he deserved.

  185. He was the one

  186. who should be

  187. abandoned

  188. by God

  189. and rejected.

  190. Not Jesus.

  191. But the son of God

  192. loved him

  193. and gave himself

  194. for him.

  195. Jesus is numbered

  196. with the transgressors

  197. and he makes

  198. intercession

  199. for the transgressors.

  200. You see

  201. these words

  202. of Jesus

  203. on the cross

  204. hold out

  205. the possibility

  206. of forgiveness.

  207. Now perhaps

  208. you have messed up

  209. so badly

  210. that you've

  211. asked yourself

  212. this question

  213. how could

  214. God

  215. possibly

  216. forgive

  217. this?

  218. Maybe it's

  219. because of

  220. the gravity

  221. of the sin

  222. that you've

  223. committed.

  224. It is too

  225. big

  226. for God

  227. to forgive.

  228. Perhaps

  229. it's because

  230. of the frequency

  231. of your sins

  232. that you have

  233. committed.

  234. There are

  235. simply

  236. too many

  237. for God

  238. to forgive.

  239. But these

  240. gracious words

  241. of Jesus

  242. on the cross

  243. surely

  244. point to

  245. the possibility

  246. of forgiveness.

  247. No matter

  248. how big

  249. no matter

  250. how

  251. many

  252. after all

  253. what sin

  254. could be

  255. greater

  256. than putting

  257. to death

  258. the eternal

  259. son

  260. of God

  261. who had

  262. come

  263. in human

  264. form.

  265. John MacArthur

  266. writes

  267. the sin

  268. they were

  269. guilty of

  270. was so

  271. unbelievably

  272. horrific

  273. that if

  274. these people

  275. had not

  276. actually

  277. heard him

  278. pray for

  279. their forgiveness

  280. they might

  281. have assumed

  282. that their

  283. sin

  284. was

  285. unforgivable.

  286. they might

  287. have assumed

  288. that their

  289. sin

  290. was

  291. unforgivable.

  292. After all

  293. what sin

  294. could be

  295. greater

  296. than this?

  297. What the

  298. apostle Paul

  299. describes

  300. elsewhere

  301. as crucifying

  302. the Lord

  303. of glory.

  304. if there's

  305. a possibility

  306. that this

  307. sin

  308. can be

  309. forgiven

  310. then there

  311. is no

  312. sin

  313. too big

  314. there is

  315. no sin

  316. too many

  317. that the

  318. death of

  319. Jesus

  320. cannot

  321. pay for

  322. it

  323. and the

  324. forgiveness

  325. of God

  326. cannot

  327. cover it.

  328. Now of course

  329. they do not

  330. know what

  331. they are

  332. doing.

  333. Jesus puts

  334. this sin

  335. of the

  336. crucifixion

  337. in the

  338. category

  339. of sins

  340. of ignorance.

  341. He prays

  342. Father forgive

  343. them for

  344. they do

  345. not know

  346. what they

  347. are doing.

  348. Now

  349. exactly who

  350. Jesus is

  351. referring to

  352. isn't very

  353. clear.

  354. Does he

  355. mean the

  356. soldiers

  357. who have

  358. nailed him

  359. to the

  360. cross?

  361. Is he

  362. referring to

  363. the crowd

  364. who have

  365. called for

  366. his crucifixion?

  367. Is he

  368. talking about

  369. the Roman

  370. authorities

  371. who have

  372. sanctioned

  373. his death?

  374. Could he

  375. even mean

  376. the Jewish

  377. religious leaders

  378. who have

  379. plotted to

  380. kill him

  381. for some

  382. time?

  383. But the

  384. Apostle Paul

  385. seems to

  386. take the

  387. broadest

  388. and the

  389. most generous

  390. of those

  391. interpretations

  392. when he

  393. writes in

  394. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 2:8

  395. 2 verse

  396. 8

  397. none of

  398. the rulers

  399. of this

  400. age

  401. understood

  402. it.

  403. For

  404. if they

  405. had

  406. they

  407. would

  408. not

  409. have

  410. crucified

  411. the

  412. Lord

  413. of

  414. glory.

  415. If

  416. they

  417. had

  418. really

  419. understood

  420. who

  421. Jesus

  422. was

  423. none

  424. of the

  425. rulers

  426. would have

  427. sanctioned

  428. his death.

  429. Not the

  430. Jewish

  431. religious

  432. leaders

  433. not the

  434. Roman

  435. authorities

  436. Pilate

  437. would not

  438. have

  439. handed him

  440. over to

  441. the crowd

  442. and the

  443. soldiers

  444. would not

  445. have

  446. nailed him

  447. to the

  448. cross

  449. none

  450. of them

  451. they

  452. would

  453. not

  454. have

  455. dared

  456. to

  457. plot

  458. the

  459. death

  460. of the

  461. creator

  462. of the

  463. world

  464. to

  465. seek to

  466. destroy

  467. the one

  468. who is

  469. immortal

  470. and

  471. eternal

  472. to

  473. pass

  474. judgment

  475. on the

  476. one

  477. who

  478. alone

  479. would

  480. pass

  481. judgment

  482. on

  483. every

  484. human

  485. being

  486. who

  487. ever

  488. lived.

  489. If only

  490. they had

  491. understood

  492. who

  493. Jesus

  494. was

  495. they

  496. would

  497. not

  498. have

  499. dared

  500. to

  501. lay

  502. a

  503. finger

  504. on

  505. him.

  506. But

  507. they

  508. did not

  509. understand

  510. this

  511. was a

  512. sin

  513. of

  514. ignorance.

  515. But

  516. sins

  517. of

  518. ignorance

  519. still

  520. make

  521. us

  522. guilty.

  523. That's

  524. clear from

  525. the fact

  526. that

  527. Jesus

  528. prays

  529. for

  530. their

  531. forgiveness.

  532. Forgiveness

  533. isn't

  534. needed

  535. when

  536. someone

  537. hasn't

  538. done

  539. wrong.

  540. It's

  541. their

  542. guilt

  543. that

  544. requires

  545. forgiveness.

  546. But

  547. you know

  548. that too

  549. if you've

  550. tried to

  551. plead your

  552. case with

  553. a guard

  554. who has

  555. pulled you

  556. over for

  557. speeding.

  558. Do you

  559. know what

  560. speed you

  561. were doing?

  562. The guard

  563. asks.

  564. No,

  565. I thought

  566. I was

  567. doing the

  568. right speed.

  569. Didn't

  570. you see

  571. the 50

  572. kilometre

  573. sign as

  574. you entered

  575. into the

  576. village?

  577. Sorry

  578. officer,

  579. I didn't

  580. see the

  581. sign.

  582. The guard

  583. starts to

  584. take down

  585. your

  586. details.

  587. Your

  588. ignorance

  589. is not

  590. going to

  591. free you

  592. from your

  593. guilt.

  594. Your

  595. ignorance

  596. will not

  597. protect you

  598. from those

  599. three

  600. penalty

  601. points

  602. and that

  603. now,

  604. believe it

  605. or not,

  606. 160

  607. euro

  608. fine.

  609. But it's

  610. the same

  611. in all

  612. kinds of

  613. areas of

  614. life.

  615. Whether

  616. it's paying

  617. your income

  618. tax or

  619. not putting

  620. money in

  621. the parking

  622. meter,

  623. your

  624. ignorance

  625. does not

  626. free you

  627. from your

  628. guilt.

  629. A fine

  630. still has

  631. to be

  632. paid,

  633. whether

  634. you knew

  635. you were

  636. breaking

  637. the law

  638. or not.

  639. You see,

  640. there's an

  641. expectation

  642. that you

  643. should know

  644. the law

  645. and obey

  646. it.

  647. If you're

  648. driving on

  649. the roads,

  650. there's an

  651. expectation

  652. that you

  653. know the

  654. rules of

  655. the road

  656. and that

  657. you obey

  658. them.

  659. It's your

  660. responsibility

  661. to know

  662. them.

  663. You should

  664. know better

  665. and ignorance

  666. is no

  667. excuse.

  668. Now,

  669. the same

  670. is true

  671. here.

  672. Jesus

  673. has spent

  674. three years

  675. in public

  676. life,

  677. teaching to

  678. vast crowds,

  679. healing the

  680. sick,

  681. demonstrating

  682. his power

  683. over nature.

  684. He has

  685. clearly identified

  686. himself as

  687. the promised

  688. Messiah.

  689. For anyone

  690. who wants

  691. to know

  692. the truth

  693. about Jesus,

  694. there has

  695. been more

  696. than enough

  697. evidence.

  698. I didn't

  699. know

  700. just won't

  701. cut it.

  702. Ignorance

  703. is no

  704. excuse.

  705. Now,

  706. perhaps there

  707. are some

  708. people here

  709. this morning

  710. who've had a

  711. very casual

  712. approach

  713. to Jesus.

  714. Jesus'

  715. identity is

  716. not something

  717. that you've

  718. really given

  719. that much

  720. thought to.

  721. And to be

  722. honest,

  723. you're quite

  724. content

  725. in your

  726. ignorance.

  727. And your

  728. hope is

  729. that perhaps

  730. your ignorance

  731. will save

  732. you.

  733. Sorry,

  734. officer,

  735. has perhaps

  736. worked for you

  737. before.

  738. But it

  739. does not

  740. work,

  741. and it

  742. will not

  743. work with

  744. God.

  745. Sins of

  746. ignorance

  747. still make

  748. us guilty.

  749. now,

  750. perhaps this

  751. prayer of

  752. Jesus

  753. still leaves

  754. you with

  755. some puzzling

  756. questions.

  757. How,

  758. after all,

  759. was Jesus'

  760. prayer answered?

  761. And what

  762. exactly is

  763. Jesus praying

  764. for?

  765. After all,

  766. if Jesus

  767. is God,

  768. doesn't he

  769. have the

  770. authority to

  771. forgive sins?

  772. Hasn't he

  773. declared other

  774. people to be

  775. forgiven?

  776. Like the

  777. lame man

  778. whose friends

  779. brought him

  780. to Jesus,

  781. or the

  782. woman who

  783. was caught

  784. in adultery?

  785. If Jesus

  786. has the

  787. authority to

  788. forgive sins,

  789. why is he

  790. praying to

  791. his heavenly

  792. father to

  793. forgive them?

  794. Now,

  795. the answer

  796. to Jesus'

  797. prayer is

  798. not by an

  799. indiscriminate

  800. pardon.

  801. That's not

  802. what's happening

  803. at the cross.

  804. We might think

  805. it sounds like

  806. that.

  807. As though

  808. Jesus is

  809. granting a

  810. pardon to

  811. anyone who

  812. is involved

  813. in any way

  814. with his

  815. crucifixion.

  816. It might

  817. appear that

  818. Jesus is

  819. throwing out

  820. pardons as

  821. freely as

  822. Donald Trump

  823. in the last

  824. week of his

  825. presidency.

  826. But that's

  827. not the case

  828. at all.

  829. In fact,

  830. Jesus has

  831. just warned

  832. of a

  833. coming

  834. judgment.

  835. Jesus has

  836. told the

  837. mourning women

  838. that instead

  839. of weeping

  840. for him,

  841. they should

  842. weep for

  843. themselves and

  844. for their

  845. children.

  846. Indeed,

  847. the coming

  848. judgment will

  849. be so

  850. severe that

  851. mothers will

  852. wish that

  853. they had

  854. never had

  855. children.

  856. And grown

  857. men in

  858. fear will

  859. long that the

  860. mountains would

  861. fall on them

  862. and cover

  863. them.

  864. this is no

  865. indiscriminate

  866. pardon where

  867. everyone escapes

  868. judgment.

  869. Instead,

  870. Jesus is

  871. doing the

  872. very thing

  873. that he

  874. had taught

  875. his followers

  876. to do.

  877. Remember the

  878. words of

  879. Jesus in

  880. Matthew 5

  881. and verse

  882. 44.

  883. Love your

  884. enemies and

  885. pray for

  886. those who

  887. persecute you.

  888. you.

  889. Jesus isn't

  890. like that

  891. long line

  892. of disgraced

  893. politicians

  894. who set

  895. standards for

  896. the average

  897. member of

  898. the public

  899. and then

  900. disregards those

  901. standards

  902. themselves.

  903. No,

  904. Jesus lives

  905. out what

  906. he has

  907. taught.

  908. Love your

  909. enemies and

  910. pray for

  911. those who

  912. persecute you.

  913. Now,

  914. it is a

  915. difficult

  916. thing to

  917. pray for

  918. those who

  919. have hurt

  920. you.

  921. It is not

  922. easy to

  923. wish good

  924. for someone

  925. who has

  926. caused you

  927. harm.

  928. And left

  929. to ourselves,

  930. we want

  931. just the

  932. opposite.

  933. we wish

  934. for bad

  935. things to

  936. happen to

  937. the person

  938. who has

  939. hurt us.

  940. And rather

  941. than praying

  942. for them,

  943. we would

  944. call down

  945. curses from

  946. heaven if

  947. we could.

  948. God,

  949. but the

  950. Christian is

  951. to leave

  952. judgment with

  953. God.

  954. No matter

  955. how much

  956. someone has

  957. sinned against

  958. you, their

  959. sin is

  960. primarily

  961. against God.

  962. However

  963. much someone

  964. has hurt

  965. you, first

  966. and foremost,

  967. they have

  968. disregarded the

  969. commands of

  970. God.

  971. However

  972. much someone

  973. has harmed

  974. you, they

  975. have rebelled

  976. against their

  977. loving creator.

  978. And the

  979. offence against

  980. you, no

  981. matter how

  982. great it

  983. may be,

  984. that offence

  985. peels into

  986. insignificance

  987. in comparison

  988. to their

  989. offence

  990. against God.

  991. If anyone

  992. has the

  993. right to

  994. demand

  995. justice,

  996. surely it

  997. is the

  998. man who

  999. is hanging

  1000. here upon

  1001. the cross.

  1002. But here

  1003. is Jesus,

  1004. God the

  1005. Son,

  1006. come in

  1007. the frailty

  1008. of human

  1009. flesh.

  1010. And he

  1011. speaks these

  1012. words, if you

  1013. like, not as

  1014. the eternal

  1015. Son of God,

  1016. who has the

  1017. authority to

  1018. forgive,

  1019. but as a

  1020. human being

  1021. like you

  1022. and I,

  1023. praying for

  1024. those who

  1025. are persecuting

  1026. him,

  1027. loving even

  1028. his enemies.

  1029. Here in the

  1030. dying hours of

  1031. Jesus' life,

  1032. we see the

  1033. perfect human

  1034. being,

  1035. what you

  1036. and I

  1037. are meant

  1038. to be,

  1039. praying that

  1040. his Father

  1041. in heaven

  1042. would forgive

  1043. those who

  1044. have treated

  1045. him so

  1046. terribly.

  1047. Now I'm

  1048. sure we've

  1049. all heard

  1050. it say,

  1051. I'm sure

  1052. we've

  1053. repeated

  1054. this,

  1055. to err

  1056. is human,

  1057. to forgive

  1058. divine.

  1059. And maybe

  1060. we say it

  1061. thinking that

  1062. gets us

  1063. off the

  1064. hook.

  1065. But as

  1066. human beings

  1067. made in

  1068. the image

  1069. of God,

  1070. to be like

  1071. God,

  1072. here we

  1073. see Jesus

  1074. in his

  1075. perfect

  1076. humanity,

  1077. praying for

  1078. those who

  1079. are persecuting

  1080. them and

  1081. praying for

  1082. their forgiveness

  1083. just as he

  1084. has taught

  1085. us to

  1086. do.

  1087. You see,

  1088. the answer

  1089. to Jesus'

  1090. prayer doesn't

  1091. come by an

  1092. indiscriminate

  1093. pardon,

  1094. but through

  1095. the declaration

  1096. of the

  1097. gospel message.

  1098. the answer

  1099. to Jesus'

  1100. prayer begins,

  1101. if you like,

  1102. some weeks

  1103. later.

  1104. On the

  1105. day of

  1106. Pentecost,

  1107. after Jesus

  1108. has risen

  1109. from the

  1110. dead and

  1111. returned to

  1112. heaven,

  1113. Peter stands

  1114. up in front

  1115. of a large

  1116. crowd and

  1117. he declares

  1118. Jesus to

  1119. be both

  1120. Lord and

  1121. Messiah.

  1122. He tells

  1123. the many

  1124. Jews who

  1125. have gathered

  1126. for this

  1127. festival that

  1128. God had

  1129. shown Jesus

  1130. to be who

  1131. he claimed

  1132. to be by

  1133. miracles,

  1134. wonders,

  1135. and signs,

  1136. but that

  1137. they,

  1138. with the

  1139. help of

  1140. wicked men,

  1141. put him

  1142. to death

  1143. by kneeling

  1144. him to

  1145. the cross.

  1146. He tells

  1147. them of the

  1148. resurrection,

  1149. of Jesus'

  1150. return to

  1151. heaven,

  1152. that he

  1153. will come

  1154. from heaven

  1155. again to

  1156. silence all

  1157. of his

  1158. enemies.

  1159. And the

  1160. crowds are

  1161. moved in

  1162. their hearts

  1163. to ask,

  1164. what shall

  1165. we do?

  1166. What will

  1167. we do?

  1168. And Peter's

  1169. response

  1170. couldn't be

  1171. any clearer.

  1172. Repent

  1173. and be

  1174. baptized,

  1175. every one

  1176. of you,

  1177. in the

  1178. name of

  1179. Jesus Christ

  1180. for the

  1181. forgiveness

  1182. of sins.

  1183. Here is the

  1184. answer to

  1185. Jesus'

  1186. prayer,

  1187. an answer

  1188. that comes

  1189. through the

  1190. gospel message,

  1191. that every

  1192. person who

  1193. turns from

  1194. their sins

  1195. and trusts

  1196. only in

  1197. Jesus,

  1198. receives

  1199. the forgiveness

  1200. of sins.

  1201. Every sin,

  1202. no matter

  1203. how big,

  1204. no matter

  1205. how many.

  1206. And why?

  1207. Because the

  1208. only truly

  1209. innocent

  1210. person who

  1211. ever lived

  1212. was numbered

  1213. with the

  1214. transgressors

  1215. and made

  1216. intercession

  1217. for the

  1218. transgressors.

  1219. The

  1220. sinless

  1221. one

  1222. took our

  1223. place

  1224. so that

  1225. we who

  1226. turn from

  1227. our sins

  1228. and trust

  1229. in Jesus

  1230. might know

  1231. the forgiveness

  1232. of God.

  1233. And it was

  1234. for this

  1235. very reason

  1236. that Jesus

  1237. had commissioned

  1238. his first

  1239. disciples

  1240. to declare

  1241. this good

  1242. news,

  1243. this message

  1244. of forgiveness

  1245. that comes

  1246. through the

  1247. cross of

  1248. Jesus.

  1249. And it's

  1250. for this

  1251. very reason

  1252. that God

  1253. has placed

  1254. his people

  1255. in this

  1256. very

  1257. town.

  1258. It is

  1259. the very

  1260. reason

  1261. that this

  1262. church

  1263. exists.

  1264. It is

  1265. the reason

  1266. every

  1267. gospel

  1268. church

  1269. exists.

  1270. To

  1271. bear witness

  1272. to the

  1273. forgiveness

  1274. of sins

  1275. that they

  1276. have found

  1277. only in

  1278. Jesus.

  1279. And to

  1280. declare that

  1281. same

  1282. promise of

  1283. forgiveness

  1284. to everyone

  1285. who will

  1286. turn from

  1287. their sins

  1288. no matter

  1289. how big,

  1290. no matter

  1291. how many,

  1292. and trust

  1293. only in

  1294. him.

  1295. Let's pray

  1296. together.

  1297. Father, as

  1298. we think of

  1299. the one

  1300. who hung

  1301. on that

  1302. cross,

  1303. we know

  1304. of all

  1305. people he

  1306. did not

  1307. deserve to

  1308. be there.

  1309. We know

  1310. that only

  1311. he was

  1312. completely

  1313. innocent

  1314. of all

  1315. sins.

  1316. and yet

  1317. we thank

  1318. you that

  1319. you have

  1320. helped us

  1321. to come

  1322. to understand

  1323. that he

  1324. hangs there

  1325. not for

  1326. the wrongs

  1327. that he

  1328. has done,

  1329. but for

  1330. the wrongs

  1331. that we

  1332. have done.

  1333. Father, we

  1334. know that it

  1335. was we

  1336. who deserved

  1337. to face

  1338. your judgment,

  1339. that it was

  1340. we who

  1341. deserved to

  1342. be cut off

  1343. from the

  1344. land of

  1345. the living.

  1346. But,

  1347. Father, we

  1348. thank you that

  1349. that judgment

  1350. fell on

  1351. Jesus

  1352. instead of

  1353. us.

  1354. And we

  1355. thank you

  1356. that there

  1357. is no

  1358. sin too

  1359. big,

  1360. that there

  1361. are no

  1362. sins too

  1363. many,

  1364. that cannot

  1365. be covered

  1366. by the

  1367. forgiveness

  1368. that is

  1369. found in

  1370. Jesus,

  1371. because he

  1372. has paid

  1373. it all.

  1374. And so,

  1375. Father, we

  1376. pray that you

  1377. might remind

  1378. us of the

  1379. forgiveness

  1380. that we

  1381. have received,

  1382. and that we

  1383. might look to

  1384. Jesus, not

  1385. only as the

  1386. one who

  1387. forgives us

  1388. of sin,

  1389. but shows

  1390. us what

  1391. it means

  1392. to love

  1393. and to

  1394. forgive those

  1395. who have

  1396. harmed us.

  1397. And we

  1398. ask this in

  1399. the name of

  1400. the Lord

  1401. Jesus.

  1402. Amen.

  1403. We're going

  1404. to stand and

  1405. sing a song

  1406. together before

  1407. Johnny comes

  1408. to lead us

  1409. around the

  1410. Lord's table.
