  3. So Genesis chapter 16.

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  4. If you miss any of the talks,

  5. they're on the website.

  6. You can find them there.

  7. And I do commend to you again

  8. the opportunity to study further,

  9. to engage with God's Word.

  10. Consider MBC.

  11. It's a bank holiday.

  12. What else would you be doing?

  13. Come along.

  14. It'll be great for you.

  15. Genesis 16, we're going to read

  16. verses 1 through to 16.

  17. Let's hear God's Word together.

  18. Now Sarai, Abram's wife,

  19. had borne him no children.

  20. But she had an Egyptian slave,

  21. named Hagar.

  22. So she said to Abram,

  23. The Lord has kept me from having children.

  24. Go sleep with my slave.

  25. Perhaps I can build a family through her.

  26. Abram agreed to what Sarai said.

  27. So after Abram had been living in Canaan 10 years,

  28. Sarai, his wife,

  29. took her Egyptian slave, Hagar,

  30. and gave her to her husband to be his wife.

  31. He slept with Hagar,

  32. and she conceived.

  33. When she knew she was pregnant,

  34. she began to despise her mistress.

  35. Then Sarai said to Abram,

  36. You are responsible for the wrong I'm suffering.

  37. I put my slave into your arms,

  38. and now that she knows she is pregnant,

  39. she despises me.

  40. May the Lord judge between you and me.

  41. Your slave is in your hands,

  42. Abram said.

  43. Do with her whatever you think best.

  44. Then Sarai ill-treated Hagar,

  45. so she fled from her.

  46. The angel of the Lord found Hagar

  47. near a spring in the desert.

  48. It was a spring that is beside the road to shore.

  49. And he said,

  50. Hagar, slave of Sarai,

  51. where have you come from?

  52. Where are you going?

  53. I'm running away from my mistress Sarai,

  54. she answered.

  55. Then the angel of the Lord told her,

  56. Go back to your mistress and submit to her.

  57. The angel added,

  58. I will increase your descendants so much

  59. that they will be too numerous to count.

  60. The angel of the Lord also said to her,

  61. You are now pregnant,

  62. and you will give birth to a son.

  63. You shall name him Ishmael,

  64. for the Lord has heard of your misery.

  65. He will be a wild donkey of a man.

  66. His hand will be against everyone,

  67. and everyone's hand against him.

  68. And he will live in hostility towards all his brothers.

  69. She gave this name to the Lord,

  70. who spoke to her.

  71. You are the God who sees me.

  72. For she said,

  73. I have now seen the one who sees me.

  74. That is why the well was called

  75. Beer-lehai-Roi.

  76. It is still there between Kadesh and Beret.

  77. So Hagar bore Abram a son,

  78. and Abram gave the name Ishmael

  79. to the son she had born.

  80. Abram was 86 years old

  81. when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

  82. Well, we get all the nitty-gritty of life,

  83. don't we, in Scripture.

  84. Let's hear what God has to say to us,

  85. and we're going to ask for his help as we pray.

  86. Father, you are the God who sees us.

  87. You see each one of us individually.

  88. You see us together as your body.

  89. You know our hearts.

  90. You know what we're feeling,

  91. what we're thinking.

  92. You know where our minds are tempted to go.

  93. And you know what is right and best for us.

  94. And so we pray that your word

  95. would penetrate deep into our life

  96. and would give to us

  97. what we most need.

  98. That we would hear from you today

  99. that would cause us to be at peace

  100. and at rest with you.

  101. So help us, we ask.

  102. In Jesus' name.

  103. Amen.

  104. One of my first jobs on leaving school

  105. was working on a barge

  106. with a friend called Bart.

  107. Now what you must understand is

  108. there was the harbour wall,

  109. the harbour area,

  110. and next to that was the pontoon

  111. which was in the water.

  112. And if you know anything about pontoons,

  113. they rise with the tide

  114. and they'll go down with the tide.

  115. Now connecting the land side,

  116. the harbour, to the pontoon

  117. was a series of electric cables.

  118. And designed in such a way

  119. with a certain amount of length

  120. that when the tide went down,

  121. the cables would stretch

  122. and when the tide came up,

  123. they would be all okay.

  124. Well, Bart couldn't help himself, could he?

  125. He had to make things better.

  126. He looked one evening

  127. and saw that the cables

  128. going from the harbour to the pontoon

  129. were slack.

  130. And he thought to himself,

  131. I could tighten these

  132. and it would make it better.

  133. And it all looked really well

  134. until the tide began to fall.

  135. You could imagine what happened.

  136. You see, sometimes things

  137. are better left alone.

  138. Our interference is exactly that,

  139. an interference.

  140. And it seems that in our text this morning,

  141. Sarai and Abram

  142. just couldn't help themselves.

  143. They had to interfere.

  144. They had to try and make things better.

  145. Well, before we get to that particular incident,

  146. let's first see the difficult situations

  147. that lead to testing times.

  148. Difficult situations that lead to testing times.

  149. God's promise has been clear.

  150. Childless Abram and Sarah

  151. would become a great nation

  152. and in turn,

  153. they would be a blessing

  154. to the nations of the world.

  155. But the great expectation

  156. soon becomes a difficult situation.

  157. Look at verse 1.

  158. Now Sarai, Abram's wife,

  159. had borne him no children.

  160. Things were getting increasingly difficult

  161. for this ageing couple.

  162. In fact, verse 3 tells us

  163. that 10 years have passed

  164. since God had made the promise.

  165. Now I don't mind how strong

  166. you think your theology is.

  167. That's just painful.

  168. Husbands and wives want to graduate

  169. to being dad and mum.

  170. Not having children

  171. is always going to be hard.

  172. And many couples

  173. have sleepless,

  174. tearful nights.

  175. And what makes this particular situation worse?

  176. Look at verse 2.

  177. She said to Abram,

  178. the Lord has kept me

  179. from having children.

  180. God who had promised us children

  181. is keeping us from having children.

  182. Now in our medical orientated world,

  183. we tend to put these disappointments

  184. and heartaches down to

  185. biology and our DNA.

  186. But behind it all,

  187. Sarai knows that the pitcher-patter

  188. of tiny feet

  189. ultimately lies

  190. in the hands of God.

  191. So what's going on here?

  192. Well, not only is it painful,

  193. the pressure is beginning to build.

  194. Sarai is getting desperate.

  195. What are they going to do?

  196. Now we're not immune

  197. to these painful testing times,

  198. are we?

  199. Life has the habit

  200. of throwing us curveballs

  201. and they hurt.

  202. They knock us down.

  203. The pressure gets to us.

  204. Maybe you're a single person

  205. and you've come on your own

  206. and you would love the idea

  207. of getting married.

  208. But nothing's happening.

  209. God's not providing.

  210. Perhaps you've witnessed

  211. and prayed for a friend

  212. or a family member

  213. over many years

  214. and, well,

  215. nothing seems to change.

  216. And you think,

  217. God's not working.

  218. You see,

  219. we can write our own

  220. disappointments into this.

  221. Maybe you're thinking

  222. of them right now.

  223. Perhaps it's a struggling marriage

  224. that you would just love

  225. to be different.

  226. Maybe it's an ongoing illness.

  227. Or maybe an unfulfilled dream.

  228. And yes,

  229. you know that behind it

  230. there's reasons

  231. for the reason

  232. why things are like it.

  233. There are explanations.

  234. But behind it all

  235. is our sovereign God

  236. who is in control

  237. of all things

  238. but yet nothing

  239. seems to happen.

  240. And the years roll by.

  241. Five years.

  242. Ten years.

  243. Twenty years.

  244. And nothing's changing.

  245. What's going on?

  246. Well, we don't always know

  247. what is going on.

  248. But as Christians,

  249. we know how we should respond.

  250. Patient obedience.

  251. We don't always understand

  252. God's ways

  253. but we know

  254. we can trust him.

  255. It's not that God

  256. is making things

  257. as difficult

  258. as they possibly can be

  259. just to see

  260. how we're going to respond.

  261. No, God's ways

  262. are just simply

  263. not always clear to us

  264. and that means

  265. it tests our faith.

  266. Difficult situations

  267. lead to testing times.

  268. And the danger is

  269. as we'll see in a moment

  270. we can begin

  271. to take things

  272. into our own hands

  273. can't we?

  274. Well, we don't have a husband

  275. so we'll marry

  276. an unbeliever

  277. in the hope

  278. that they will become

  279. a believer.

  280. Maybe we just

  281. adjust the gospel message

  282. slightly

  283. so that it becomes

  284. more accessible

  285. in the hope

  286. that our friend

  287. or family member

  288. will believe.

  289. We begin to turn

  290. to other things

  291. and people

  292. to somehow

  293. fulfil what we

  294. all desperately want

  295. and God

  296. doesn't seem

  297. to deliver.

  298. But maybe

  299. these hard

  300. and difficult

  301. situations

  302. can also be used

  303. to pull us

  304. deeper into God

  305. and realise that

  306. well,

  307. he is sufficient.

  308. he is

  309. enough.

  310. The writer

  311. of Psalm 16

  312. understood this.

  313. Listen to his words.

  314. Keep me safe,

  315. my God,

  316. for in you

  317. I take refuge.

  318. I say to the Lord,

  319. you are my Lord.

  320. Apart from you

  321. I have no good thing.

  322. I could have

  323. everything else

  324. but not have

  325. what I most

  326. desperately need.

  327. Those who run

  328. after other gods

  329. will only suffer

  330. more

  331. and more.

  332. So difficult

  333. situations

  334. can lead

  335. to testing

  336. times

  337. in our life.

  338. well,

  339. second,

  340. sinful

  341. solutions

  342. can lead

  343. to

  344. disastrous

  345. consequences.

  346. Sarai

  347. and Abraham's

  348. situation

  349. is difficult.

  350. God

  351. had promised

  352. them a family

  353. through whom

  354. the nations

  355. of the world

  356. will be blessed

  357. but they

  358. don't have

  359. a child.

  360. well,

  361. simples.

  362. Let's give

  363. God a hand.

  364. Let's help

  365. things along

  366. a bit.

  367. God seems

  368. to be in a bit

  369. of a mess

  370. and he just

  371. needs some

  372. of our help.

  373. Isn't that

  374. true?

  375. God helps

  376. those who

  377. help themselves?

  378. Who says

  379. that?

  380. Is it Jesus

  381. or Paul?

  382. No,

  383. it's not

  384. in your Bible.

  385. Don't go

  386. looking.

  387. It's not

  388. there.

  389. playing

  390. God is

  391. always

  392. rebellious.

  393. It's sin

  394. and sinful

  395. solutions

  396. always lead

  397. to disastrous

  398. consequences.

  399. Let's look

  400. at the three

  401. characters

  402. involved

  403. in this

  404. account.

  405. First,

  406. there's

  407. Sarai

  408. and the

  409. sin of

  410. taking

  411. what you

  412. want.

  413. Sarai

  414. wants a

  415. child

  416. so she

  417. takes matters

  418. into her

  419. own hands.

  420. I know

  421. maybe

  422. Hagar

  423. could help.

  424. Verse 2,

  425. so she

  426. said to

  427. Abram,

  428. the Lord

  429. has kept

  430. me from

  431. having

  432. children.

  433. Go sleep

  434. with my

  435. slave.

  436. Perhaps I

  437. can build

  438. a family

  439. through her.

  440. Now,

  441. given the

  442. reality of

  443. the situation,

  444. we might

  445. have some

  446. kind of

  447. sympathy

  448. for

  449. Sarai.

  450. After

  451. all,

  452. God's

  453. blessing

  454. on the

  455. world

  456. depends on

  457. them having

  458. a child.

  459. I mean,

  460. what could

  461. possibly be

  462. wrong with

  463. her plan?

  464. Well,

  465. nothing's wrong

  466. with the

  467. plan except

  468. Genesis 2

  469. tells us

  470. that a man

  471. leaves his

  472. father and

  473. mother and

  474. is united to

  475. his wife and

  476. they become

  477. one flesh.

  478. Marriage is

  479. permanent,

  480. exclusive,

  481. and isn't

  482. open to

  483. other partners.

  484. others.

  485. You see,

  486. when we

  487. desperately

  488. want

  489. something,

  490. we begin

  491. to disengage

  492. with what

  493. God says

  494. and respond

  495. with what

  496. I want.

  497. So,

  498. there's

  499. Sarai and

  500. the sin of

  501. taking what

  502. you want.

  503. Then there's

  504. Abram and

  505. the sin of

  506. ignoring what

  507. is right.

  508. How's

  509. Abram going

  510. to respond to

  511. such a

  512. suggestion?

  513. Well,

  514. look at the

  515. rest of

  516. verse 2.

  517. Abram

  518. agreed to

  519. what Sarai

  520. said.

  521. So,

  522. after Abram

  523. had been

  524. living in

  525. Canaan

  526. ten years,

  527. Sarai,

  528. his wife,

  529. took her

  530. Egyptian

  531. slave,

  532. Hagar,

  533. gave her

  534. to her

  535. husband to

  536. be his

  537. wife.

  538. He slept

  539. with Hagar

  540. and she

  541. conceived.

  542. Well,

  543. it's

  544. understandable,

  545. isn't it?

  546. I mean,

  547. they've been

  548. waiting so

  549. long.

  550. It's been

  551. ten

  552. long

  553. years.

  554. Surely

  555. God doesn't

  556. want it to

  557. take that

  558. long.

  559. I mean,

  560. what else am

  561. I supposed

  562. to do?

  563. And it

  564. will keep

  565. the missus

  566. happy.

  567. Sarai

  568. wants,

  569. Sarai

  570. gets.

  571. Well,

  572. it might

  573. reflect many

  574. a sad

  575. marriage,

  576. but this

  577. isn't going

  578. to do.

  579. The author

  580. wants us

  581. to see

  582. this.

  583. It's

  584. underlined

  585. for us.

  586. If you

  587. look at

  588. the middle

  589. of verse

  590. three,

  591. Sarai,

  592. his wife,

  593. took her

  594. Egyptian

  595. slave,

  596. Hagar,

  597. and gave

  598. her to

  599. her husband

  600. to be

  601. his wife.

  602. Sarai

  603. has a

  604. husband.

  605. His name's

  606. Abram,

  607. and Abram

  608. has a

  609. wife.

  610. Her name

  611. is Sarai.

  612. No,

  613. none of

  614. them.

  615. Abram

  616. can't

  617. plead

  618. ignorance

  619. to God's

  620. good design.

  621. He knows

  622. what's

  623. right.

  624. And then

  625. there's

  626. Hagar,

  627. and the

  628. sin of

  629. running

  630. from her

  631. guilt.

  632. we

  633. don't

  634. need to

  635. be

  636. marriage

  637. counsellors

  638. to guess

  639. what's

  640. going to

  641. happen

  642. next,

  643. do we?

  644. Look at

  645. the end

  646. of verse

  647. four.

  648. When

  649. Hagar

  650. knew she

  651. was

  652. pregnant,

  653. she

  654. began

  655. to

  656. despise

  657. her

  658. mistress.

  659. What's

  660. the matter,

  661. Sarai?

  662. Can't

  663. give what

  664. your husband

  665. wants?

  666. Well,

  667. Sarai

  668. repaid the

  669. compliment,

  670. didn't

  671. she?

  672. Look at

  673. the end

  674. of verse

  675. six.

  676. Sarai

  677. ill-treated

  678. Hagar,

  679. so she

  680. fled from

  681. her.

  682. No,

  683. Hagar

  684. isn't an

  685. innocent

  686. bystander

  687. in all

  688. of this.

  689. She

  690. knows

  691. the deal,

  692. and she's

  693. quite happy

  694. to go

  695. along with

  696. it.

  697. Maybe

  698. it will

  699. kind of

  700. get her

  701. up the

  702. pecking

  703. order a

  704. bit.

  705. But when

  706. it all

  707. gets a

  708. little bit

  709. messy and

  710. too close

  711. to the

  712. bone,

  713. she

  714. ups and

  715. leaves.

  716. Rather

  717. than face

  718. the sin

  719. and the

  720. trouble,

  721. she runs

  722. away from

  723. it.

  724. You see,

  725. all three,

  726. Sarai,

  727. Abram,

  728. Hagar,

  729. they're all

  730. responsible for

  731. playing God.

  732. They all

  733. take matters

  734. into their

  735. own hands.

  736. And what

  737. seemed to

  738. be a

  739. clever

  740. solution

  741. turned out

  742. to have

  743. disastrous

  744. consequences.

  745. They all

  746. begin to

  747. start

  748. fighting.

  749. Verse

  750. five,

  751. Sarai

  752. said to

  753. Abram,

  754. Hugh,

  755. you're

  756. responsible

  757. for the

  758. wrong

  759. I'm

  760. suffering.

  761. Verse

  762. six,

  763. no,

  764. your

  765. slave is

  766. in your

  767. hands,

  768. Abram

  769. said.

  770. Do

  771. with her

  772. whatever

  773. you think

  774. best.

  775. And

  776. Sarai

  777. ill-treated

  778. Hagar,

  779. and

  780. Hagar

  781. fled from

  782. her.

  783. Playing

  784. God is

  785. all so

  786. familiar,

  787. isn't it?

  788. It's how

  789. the first

  790. marriage in

  791. the Bible

  792. that we

  793. come across

  794. started out.

  795. remember

  796. Adam and

  797. Eve?

  798. All

  799. this is

  800. yours.

  801. You can

  802. enjoy all

  803. this fruit,

  804. but not

  805. this.

  806. Well,

  807. Eve wanted

  808. and Eve

  809. got.

  810. And she

  811. gave some

  812. to her

  813. husband and

  814. he took.

  815. Just as

  816. Sarai gave

  817. Hagar to

  818. Abram and

  819. he took.

  820. And when

  821. it all

  822. just got

  823. so messy,

  824. Adam and

  825. Eve hid

  826. and ran

  827. from their

  828. sin.

  829. And then

  830. the blame

  831. game started.

  832. Her,

  833. him,

  834. no,

  835. Satan.

  836. Of course,

  837. the actions

  838. of that

  839. first marriage

  840. in the

  841. Garden of

  842. Eden had

  843. disastrous

  844. consequences,

  845. and it

  846. seems our

  847. sinful

  848. solutions to

  849. it all are

  850. not much

  851. better.

  852. think about

  853. our own

  854. lives for

  855. a minute.

  856. I want

  857. to be

  858. happy.

  859. I'll make

  860. myself happy.

  861. I want

  862. to live as

  863. I like.

  864. I'll do

  865. as I like.

  866. I want

  867. to...

  868. You fill

  869. in the

  870. blank.

  871. What are

  872. you desperately

  873. wanting right

  874. now?

  875. I want

  876. and I'll

  877. have.

  878. And we

  879. just ignore

  880. God's

  881. word.

  882. We twist

  883. the truth.

  884. We reject

  885. what's

  886. right.

  887. And like

  888. it always

  889. does,

  890. well,

  891. it just

  892. goes from

  893. bad to

  894. worse.

  895. Instead

  896. of confronting

  897. our sin,

  898. we begin

  899. to run

  900. and hide

  901. from it.

  902. We blame

  903. others.

  904. It's not

  905. me,

  906. it's them.

  907. We blame

  908. our past.

  909. It's my

  910. parents.

  911. It was

  912. my education.

  913. We blame

  914. our childhood.

  915. We blame

  916. the church.

  917. The only

  918. thing we're

  919. absolutely

  920. certain of

  921. is it's

  922. not my

  923. fault.

  924. Hagar

  925. did have

  926. a child

  927. but life

  928. was not

  929. going to

  930. be easy.

  931. Look at

  932. the end

  933. of,

  934. look at

  935. verse 12.

  936. God

  937. said that

  938. her son

  939. would be

  940. a wild

  941. donkey

  942. of a

  943. man.

  944. His

  945. hand

  946. will be

  947. against

  948. everyone

  949. and

  950. everyone's

  951. hand

  952. against

  953. him

  954. and

  955. he

  956. will

  957. live

  958. in

  959. hostility

  960. towards

  961. all

  962. his

  963. brothers.

  964. others.

  965. The

  966. children of

  967. Hagar

  968. and the

  969. children of

  970. Sarai

  971. would be

  972. in conflict

  973. all their

  974. years.

  975. In fact,

  976. if we know

  977. anything of

  978. our history,

  979. it's still

  980. going on

  981. today,

  982. isn't it?

  983. It's being

  984. played out in

  985. the Middle

  986. East every

  987. single day.

  988. You see,

  989. sin has

  990. this

  991. disastrous

  992. consequence.

  993. It's like

  994. the first

  995. flick of

  996. a domino.

  997. One push

  998. and there's

  999. no end

  1000. to its

  1001. destruction.

  1002. So we

  1003. have sinful

  1004. solutions

  1005. that lead

  1006. to

  1007. disastrous

  1008. consequences.

  1009. But then

  1010. there's a

  1011. God

  1012. intervention

  1013. that leads

  1014. to

  1015. redeemed

  1016. lives.

  1017. God

  1018. interventions

  1019. lead to

  1020. redeemed

  1021. lives.

  1022. I mean,

  1023. the account

  1024. is such a

  1025. terrible mess,

  1026. isn't it?

  1027. How do you

  1028. begin to

  1029. untangle

  1030. it all?

  1031. Well,

  1032. the point

  1033. is you

  1034. can't.

  1035. Sin has

  1036. deep

  1037. consequences

  1038. that you

  1039. and I

  1040. can't

  1041. undo.

  1042. However,

  1043. there is

  1044. one who

  1045. can deal

  1046. with our

  1047. past and

  1048. give us

  1049. a future,

  1050. one who

  1051. redeems

  1052. and restores

  1053. broken lives.

  1054. Now,

  1055. before we

  1056. look at

  1057. how God

  1058. redeems,

  1059. we've got

  1060. to ask

  1061. this question,

  1062. who is

  1063. the angel

  1064. of the

  1065. Lord?

  1066. He appears

  1067. in verse

  1068. seven,

  1069. the angel

  1070. of the

  1071. Lord.

  1072. In verse

  1073. nine,

  1074. the angel

  1075. of the

  1076. Lord told

  1077. her.

  1078. Verse

  1079. eleven,

  1080. the angel

  1081. of the

  1082. Lord also

  1083. said to

  1084. her,

  1085. well,

  1086. it's

  1087. not just

  1088. any

  1089. angel.

  1090. It seems

  1091. to be

  1092. that the

  1093. angel of

  1094. the Lord,

  1095. and if we

  1096. find this

  1097. out more

  1098. as we go

  1099. through the

  1100. Old Testament,

  1101. seems to be

  1102. a manifestation

  1103. of God

  1104. himself.

  1105. That's what

  1106. Hagar points

  1107. to if you

  1108. look at

  1109. verse

  1110. thirteen.

  1111. so she

  1112. gave this

  1113. name to

  1114. the

  1115. Lord

  1116. who

  1117. spoke

  1118. to her.

  1119. You

  1120. are the

  1121. God

  1122. who

  1123. sees

  1124. me.

  1125. The

  1126. angel

  1127. of the

  1128. Lord

  1129. is a

  1130. manifestation

  1131. of God

  1132. himself

  1133. who

  1134. comes

  1135. in

  1136. person

  1137. to deal

  1138. with

  1139. Hagar.

  1140. So let's

  1141. look at

  1142. God's

  1143. personal

  1144. and gracious

  1145. intervention

  1146. into the

  1147. life of

  1148. Hagar.

  1149. We're going

  1150. to see

  1151. three things

  1152. that relate

  1153. to our

  1154. lives as

  1155. well.

  1156. First,

  1157. God seeks

  1158. the lost.

  1159. Look at

  1160. verse

  1161. seven.

  1162. The

  1163. angel of

  1164. the Lord

  1165. found

  1166. Hagar

  1167. near a

  1168. spring in

  1169. the desert.

  1170. It's a

  1171. beautiful

  1172. picture,

  1173. isn't it?

  1174. We can

  1175. picture

  1176. Hagar

  1177. wandering

  1178. around in

  1179. the desert

  1180. trying to

  1181. find some

  1182. respite by

  1183. a spring

  1184. lost

  1185. and alone

  1186. and God

  1187. calls her

  1188. by name.

  1189. Verse

  1190. eight.

  1191. Hagar

  1192. slave of

  1193. Sarai

  1194. where have

  1195. you come

  1196. from?

  1197. Where are

  1198. you going?

  1199. You see

  1200. this is the

  1201. kind of

  1202. God we

  1203. have.

  1204. He never

  1205. waits for

  1206. us to

  1207. come to

  1208. him.

  1209. God takes

  1210. the initiative

  1211. and moves

  1212. out towards

  1213. us.

  1214. God loves

  1215. to redeem

  1216. sinners.

  1217. Isn't that

  1218. what we see

  1219. in the

  1220. person of

  1221. Jesus?

  1222. The God

  1223. man who

  1224. comes into

  1225. the mess

  1226. and brokenness

  1227. of our

  1228. lives,

  1229. reaching out

  1230. to us,

  1231. searching us

  1232. until he

  1233. finds us,

  1234. looking for

  1235. the prodigal,

  1236. as Jesus

  1237. himself reminds

  1238. us,

  1239. for the

  1240. son of

  1241. man came

  1242. to seek

  1243. and to

  1244. save

  1245. the lost.

  1246. Maybe you

  1247. feel you're

  1248. wandering in

  1249. the desert.

  1250. Maybe you're

  1251. running from

  1252. certain things

  1253. in the past

  1254. that have

  1255. never ever

  1256. been addressed.

  1257. Well,

  1258. God is

  1259. seeking you

  1260. because he

  1261. loves you.

  1262. God

  1263. seeks the

  1264. lost

  1265. and God

  1266. hears

  1267. the

  1268. repentant.

  1269. Look at

  1270. verse 8

  1271. again.

  1272. God said,

  1273. Hagar,

  1274. slave of

  1275. Sarai,

  1276. where have

  1277. you come

  1278. from?

  1279. Where are

  1280. you going?

  1281. Well,

  1282. it's not

  1283. that God

  1284. doesn't know

  1285. where she's

  1286. come from

  1287. or where

  1288. she's going.

  1289. He knows.

  1290. So why

  1291. would God

  1292. ask a

  1293. question?

  1294. Well,

  1295. he asks the

  1296. question because

  1297. it's an

  1298. invitation to

  1299. Hagar to

  1300. come and

  1301. speak and

  1302. engage with

  1303. the living

  1304. God.

  1305. God is a

  1306. listener.

  1307. He hears

  1308. us.

  1309. He's

  1310. concerned for

  1311. you and

  1312. for me.

  1313. Hagar

  1314. responds,

  1315. end of

  1316. verse 8,

  1317. I'm

  1318. running

  1319. away.

  1320. I'm

  1321. running

  1322. away.

  1323. Hagar

  1324. admits to

  1325. what she's

  1326. doing.

  1327. She's on

  1328. the run.

  1329. She knows

  1330. the mess

  1331. she's left

  1332. behind and

  1333. she's turned

  1334. her back and

  1335. she's getting

  1336. out of there.

  1337. So God

  1338. in his grace

  1339. calls her

  1340. back again.

  1341. Verse 9,

  1342. then the

  1343. angel of the

  1344. Lord told

  1345. her,

  1346. go back

  1347. to your

  1348. mistress

  1349. and submit

  1350. to her.

  1351. Of course,

  1352. Hagar has

  1353. no idea

  1354. how she's

  1355. going to

  1356. be treated

  1357. but,

  1358. it's what

  1359. she must

  1360. do.

  1361. She must

  1362. obey what

  1363. God says

  1364. and she

  1365. turns back.

  1366. You see,

  1367. maybe there's

  1368. stuff in

  1369. your past

  1370. today and

  1371. you don't

  1372. want to go

  1373. back there.

  1374. You're not

  1375. wanting to

  1376. face up to

  1377. it.

  1378. But maybe

  1379. there's

  1380. relationships

  1381. we need

  1382. to deal

  1383. with.

  1384. We must

  1385. obey

  1386. and trust

  1387. all things

  1388. to him.

  1389. You see,

  1390. God hears

  1391. your cry.

  1392. He hears

  1393. your longings

  1394. to change

  1395. and be

  1396. different.

  1397. He hears

  1398. about your

  1399. regrets.

  1400. He sees

  1401. your failing.

  1402. He knows

  1403. your sin

  1404. and in

  1405. response,

  1406. God is

  1407. calling us

  1408. back.

  1409. Go back.

  1410. Come back

  1411. to me.

  1412. The Bible

  1413. calls it

  1414. repentance.

  1415. We never

  1416. ever stop

  1417. repenting.

  1418. And so

  1419. that we

  1420. know he

  1421. hears us,

  1422. look at

  1423. verse 11,

  1424. the angel

  1425. of the Lord

  1426. also said

  1427. to her,

  1428. you are

  1429. now pregnant

  1430. and you

  1431. will give

  1432. birth to a

  1433. son.

  1434. You'll

  1435. call him

  1436. Ishmael.

  1437. Ishmael

  1438. means

  1439. the Lord

  1440. has heard

  1441. of your

  1442. misery.

  1443. You see,

  1444. we can

  1445. come to

  1446. God with

  1447. all our

  1448. misery

  1449. and all

  1450. our mess

  1451. and he

  1452. hears you

  1453. and he

  1454. will answer

  1455. you.

  1456. So God

  1457. seeks,

  1458. God

  1459. hears

  1460. and then

  1461. we know

  1462. this next

  1463. one,

  1464. God

  1465. sees

  1466. the needy.

  1467. Verse 13,

  1468. Hagar

  1469. gave this

  1470. name to

  1471. the Lord

  1472. who spoke

  1473. to her,

  1474. you are

  1475. the God

  1476. who sees

  1477. me.

  1478. For she

  1479. said,

  1480. I have

  1481. now seen

  1482. the one

  1483. who sees

  1484. me.

  1485. So who's

  1486. seeing who?

  1487. Well,

  1488. there's a

  1489. double truth

  1490. here that

  1491. both encourages

  1492. us and

  1493. blesses us.

  1494. At one

  1495. level,

  1496. Hagar

  1497. can say,

  1498. God

  1499. sees me.

  1500. God

  1501. sees me.

  1502. Rather

  1503. than her

  1504. sin

  1505. putting her

  1506. out of

  1507. sight of

  1508. God,

  1509. it's her

  1510. sin that

  1511. puts her

  1512. in the

  1513. direct

  1514. vision

  1515. and

  1516. sight of

  1517. God.

  1518. You see,

  1519. no one

  1520. is so

  1521. messed up

  1522. that God

  1523. cannot

  1524. see them.

  1525. Isn't that

  1526. encouraging?

  1527. with

  1528. his piercing

  1529. eyes,

  1530. he

  1531. penetrates

  1532. beneath

  1533. the

  1534. facade

  1535. and the

  1536. masks

  1537. that we

  1538. carry

  1539. with us

  1540. and he

  1541. sees

  1542. our

  1543. heart.

  1544. But at

  1545. another

  1546. level,

  1547. Hagar

  1548. can say,

  1549. I have

  1550. now seen

  1551. God,

  1552. the one

  1553. who sees

  1554. me.

  1555. Hagar

  1556. can now

  1557. see God

  1558. in the

  1559. sense that

  1560. she can

  1561. know God

  1562. personally

  1563. and

  1564. intimately.

  1565. Through her

  1566. repentance,

  1567. through her

  1568. engagement,

  1569. her encounter

  1570. with God,

  1571. she can

  1572. now see

  1573. the God

  1574. who is

  1575. holy

  1576. and pure.

  1577. That's

  1578. the God

  1579. we have.

  1580. The one

  1581. who not

  1582. only sees

  1583. us,

  1584. but invites

  1585. people like

  1586. us to

  1587. see him,

  1588. to know

  1589. him and

  1590. to enjoy

  1591. him.

  1592. You see,

  1593. God doesn't

  1594. need our

  1595. interventions.

  1596. We need

  1597. a God

  1598. intervention

  1599. in our

  1600. life.

  1601. God

  1602. doesn't

  1603. need

  1604. Sarai

  1605. and Abram

  1606. to do

  1607. his job.

  1608. God

  1609. had promised

  1610. that he

  1611. would bless

  1612. the nations

  1613. and he

  1614. will continue

  1615. to bless

  1616. the nations.

  1617. Even a

  1618. woman from

  1619. Egypt,

  1620. an outsider

  1621. called

  1622. Hagar.

  1623. And if

  1624. he can

  1625. bless her

  1626. too,

  1627. he can

  1628. bless you

  1629. and me.

  1630. You see,

  1631. sin and

  1632. its

  1633. consequences

  1634. may be

  1635. deeply

  1636. engraved

  1637. in our

  1638. lives.

  1639. And we

  1640. can't

  1641. undo

  1642. what's

  1643. broken.

  1644. But we

  1645. have one

  1646. who

  1647. redeems

  1648. and

  1649. intervenes.

  1650. so even

  1651. in our

  1652. mess,

  1653. even in

  1654. the depth

  1655. of our

  1656. despair,

  1657. when we

  1658. give up

  1659. on ourselves,

  1660. when everybody

  1661. else gives

  1662. up on us,

  1663. there is

  1664. one who

  1665. delights in

  1666. saving

  1667. wanderers like

  1668. us.

  1669. The God

  1670. who seeks

  1671. the lost,

  1672. hears the

  1673. repentant,

  1674. and sees

  1675. the needy.

  1676. Let's

  1677. just take

  1678. a moment

  1679. to reflect

  1680. together.

  1681. Let's

  1682. just

  1683. take

  1684. a moment

  1685. to reflect

  1686. together.

  1687. Lord God,

  1688. we're

  1689. sorry for

  1690. the times

  1691. we have

  1692. rushed

  1693. things

  1694. along,

  1695. taken

  1696. things

  1697. that

  1698. aren't

  1699. ours,

  1700. trying

  1701. to do

  1702. your

  1703. job.

  1704. Father,

  1705. please

  1706. forgive us.

  1707. Help us

  1708. to know

  1709. a fresh

  1710. the God

  1711. who comes

  1712. to rescue

  1713. us and

  1714. redeem us,

  1715. dealing

  1716. with our

  1717. past,

  1718. and giving

  1719. us a

  1720. glorious

  1721. future.

  1722. Thank you

  1723. that through

  1724. faith in

  1725. Christ we

  1726. can say

  1727. we can

  1728. see you

  1729. and know

  1730. you.

  1731. And thank

  1732. you that

  1733. one day

  1734. we will

  1735. see you

  1736. face to

  1737. face.

  1738. We will

  1739. be with

  1740. you.

  1741. and you

  1742. will know

  1743. us and

  1744. we will

  1745. know you

  1746. in all

  1747. its

  1748. fullness.

  1749. Thank you

  1750. God.

  1751. Amen.

  1752. Amen.

  1753. song we're

  1754. going to

  1755. sing.

  1756. I once

  1757. was lost

  1758. in darkest

  1759. night.

  1760. I thought

  1761. I knew

  1762. the way.

  1763. There's

  1764. only one

  1765. way and

  1766. that's

  1767. always

  1768. returning

  1769. to

  1770. Christ.

  1771. He is

  1772. enough.

  1773. He is

  1774. sufficient

  1775. for all

  1776. things.

  1777. So I

  1778. invite you

  1779. if you're

  1780. able to
