  3. Genesis 18, we're following along in our studies through Genesis.

  4. Thank you, just waiting for a drink.

  5. Thank you.

  6. Thank you.

  7. In the heat of the day, Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby.

  8. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them, and he bowed low to the ground.

  9. He said, if I found favour in your eyes, my Lord, do not pass your servant by.

  10. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.

  11. Let me get you something to eat so you can be refreshed, and then go on your way, now that you have come to your servant.

  12. Very well, they answered.

  13. Do as you say.

  14. So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah.

  15. Quick, he said.

  16. Get sixteen kilograms of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.

  17. Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice tender calf, gave it to his servant who hurried to prepare it.

  18. He then brought some curds and milk and set these before them.

  19. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.

  20. Where is your wife, Sarah?

  21. They asked him.

  22. There, in the tent, he said.

  23. Then one of them said, I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah, your wife, will have a son.

  24. Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent which was behind him.

  25. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.

  26. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought.

  27. After I am worn out and my Lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?

  28. Then the Lord said to Abraham, why did Sarah laugh and say, will I really have a child now that I am old?

  29. Is anything too hard for the Lord?

  30. I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.

  31. Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, I didn't laugh.

  32. But he said, yes, you did laugh.

  33. Well, let's pray.

  34. Father, we thank you for giving to us your words in our language that we can read,

  35. and that by your Spirit's help we can understand.

  36. We pray that from this short text, you would teach us about yourself,

  37. and how we should live in response.

  38. May not one of us leave this building without being changed and transformed by you today.

  39. And we pray this for your glory and for our good.

  40. Amen.

  41. Well, Sunday mornings, well, usually Sunday mornings anyway, I know it's an afternoon,

  42. can be a bit frantic, especially for me.

  43. It usually ends with me sitting in the car, beeping the horn.

  44. Eventually, Kirsty makes her way to the car, and the conversations begin.

  45. What took you so long?

  46. And it's only then that I realised, well, somebody had to unload and load the dishwasher.

  47. Somebody had to get the sandwiches prepared for afternoon tea.

  48. Someone had to bring my Bible, which I had left on the stairs yet again.

  49. Just because Kirsty isn't running in a hurry, doesn't mean to say nothing is happening.

  50. Well, it appears that God is not in a hurry.

  51. And that doesn't mean that nothing is happening.

  52. God had promised to Abraham that he was going to be a blessing to the world.

  53. And God confirmed it by his covenant.

  54. So by the time we turn to chapter 18,

  55. we expect to find Abraham as a great nation, blessing the world.

  56. We expect to see him on his world preaching tour,

  57. entitled Five Steps to a Blessed Life,

  58. filling the stadiums, signing books.

  59. But that's not where we find Abraham.

  60. We actually find him all by himself under a tree.

  61. Look at verse 1.

  62. The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre

  63. while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.

  64. It seems that when it comes to God's promises,

  65. God isn't in much of a hurry.

  66. But that doesn't mean to say that nothing is happening.

  67. So let's encourage ourselves that as we look at this text this afternoon,

  68. not to rush.

  69. Let's take our time,

  70. slow down,

  71. and see what God is teaching us.

  72. The first thing that I want us to see is

  73. the ordinary ways in which God's people serve.

  74. The ordinary ways in which God's people serve.

  75. God hasn't forgotten his plan of redemption.

  76. In fact, it's through the ordinary, everyday acts of service

  77. that God is doing his work.

  78. Now, before we see this,

  79. we need to get to grips with our three friends.

  80. We're introduced to them at the beginning of verse 2.

  81. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing by.

  82. Now, this isn't the Trinity.

  83. Some people say it is, but it's not.

  84. As we read through the text,

  85. it seems that one of them is the Lord,

  86. while the other two are angels,

  87. God's messengers.

  88. And we can see this if you go to the very end of the chapter.

  89. Chapter 18, verse 33.

  90. We read that when the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham,

  91. he left and Abraham returned home.

  92. And then into chapter 19,

  93. the two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening.

  94. So there we have our three visitors

  95. who've been encountering and speaking

  96. to Abraham the Lord

  97. and two angels.

  98. Now, while we at this stage know their identity,

  99. it's not immediately clear to Abraham who they are.

  100. But let's get back to the main point.

  101. Abraham may be waiting at his tent,

  102. sits shading from the sun,

  103. waiting for God to fulfil his purpose.

  104. But that doesn't mean he's just twiddling his thumbs,

  105. doing nothing.

  106. No, Abraham gets serving.

  107. First, notice the attitude of Abraham.

  108. Look at his attitude, verse 2.

  109. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby.

  110. When he saw them,

  111. he hurried from the entrance of his tent

  112. to meet them and bowed low to the ground.

  113. Now, bowing low is a posture of humility.

  114. It's bowing down as if to say,

  115. at your service, your master.

  116. How can I be of help?

  117. Now, that's not always the way I respond

  118. when my doorbell goes,

  119. especially if I'm sitting down

  120. treating myself to some me time.

  121. For goodness sake,

  122. will you go and ring somebody else's house?

  123. Leave me alone.

  124. No, the assumed heart attitude of God's people

  125. should be one of humility.

  126. At your service,

  127. how can I be of help?

  128. So that's his attitude.

  129. But now look at his action.

  130. Verse 3.

  131. He said,

  132. If I have found favour in your eyes, my Lord,

  133. do not pass your servant by.

  134. Let a little water be bought

  135. and then you may all wash your feet

  136. and rest under this tree.

  137. Let me get you something to eat

  138. so you can be fresh

  139. and then go on your way

  140. now that you have come to your servant.

  141. All of a sudden,

  142. there's a flurry of activity.

  143. There's no Lidl's bakery,

  144. no chicken van to go to.

  145. Sarah, quick!

  146. There's people for dinner.

  147. Get the fire stoked up.

  148. Get the bread on.

  149. I'll go and get the steaks.

  150. A couple of hours later,

  151. our three friends are smiling, aren't they?

  152. What a meal!

  153. Verse 8.

  154. He then brought them some curds,

  155. that's some cheese and milk,

  156. and a calf that had been prepared,

  157. and set these before them.

  158. And while they ate,

  159. he stood near them under a tree.

  160. You see,

  161. the attitude of humility

  162. leads to an action of service.

  163. Abraham assumes the role of a servant

  164. because when we're waiting for God,

  165. that's what God's people do.

  166. Now, serving isn't particularly glamorous.

  167. It has the habit of interrupting me time

  168. and family schedules

  169. and weekend plans.

  170. But yet, this is what God's people do.

  171. We get on with serving.

  172. That's our daily diet.

  173. Of course, humble hospitality

  174. may only be one way to serve,

  175. but it's a great way to serve.

  176. God has given you a home.

  177. It's not yours, by the way,

  178. and neither is mine.

  179. It's a gift from God,

  180. and he has filled your house,

  181. no doubt,

  182. with frying pans and pots

  183. and all sorts of cooking utensils.

  184. So start using them.

  185. Open up our homes

  186. for the sake of the kingdom

  187. to serve those around us

  188. who need encouragement and support.

  189. When you say,

  190. I'm not a very good baker.

  191. Well, I get that.

  192. But that doesn't hinder

  193. what we can do.

  194. Turn with me, please,

  195. to 1 Peter chapter 4

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  196. in the New Testament.

  197. 1 Peter chapter 4.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  198. If you've got a page number,

  199. help me out, please.

  200. 1, 2, 2, 0.

  201. 1, 2, 2, 0.

  202. 1 Peter chapter 4.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  203. He's actually just spoken about

  204. hospitality.

  205. But then he reminds us,

  206. starting in verse 10,

  207. 1 Peter chapter 4,

    1 Peter 4:10

  208. verse 10.

  209. Each of you,

  210. doesn't matter who we are,

  211. should use whatever gift

  212. you have received,

  213. we all have gifts,

  214. to serve others

  215. as faithful stewards

  216. of God's grace

  217. in its various forms

  218. or its multicoloured form.

  219. So we become conduits

  220. of grace

  221. to one another

  222. as we serve.

  223. If anyone speaks,

  224. they should do so

  225. as one who speaks

  226. the very words of God.

  227. as we have our tea

  228. and sandwiches later,

  229. what a great opportunity

  230. to speak

  231. words of encouragement

  232. to each other.

  233. If anyone serves,

  234. they should do it

  235. with the strength

  236. God provides,

  237. so that in all things

  238. God may be praised

  239. through Jesus Christ.

  240. To him

  241. be the glory

  242. and the power

  243. forever and ever.

  244. Amen.

  245. Let's go back

  246. to Genesis.

  247. You see,

  248. the ordinary slog

  249. of serving others

  250. mightn't get you

  251. any awards,

  252. but it does lead

  253. to the praise

  254. and glory of God

  255. through our very simple

  256. acts of speaking

  257. and serving.

  258. So God mightn't be

  259. in a hurry

  260. as far as we're concerned,

  261. but he will fulfil

  262. his plan of redemption.

  263. In the meantime,

  264. as we wait for God

  265. to do his work,

  266. we get serving.

  267. It's what God's people

  268. do.

  269. So,

  270. the way in which

  271. God's people serve.

  272. Second,

  273. the ordinary people

  274. that God uses

  275. in his purposes.

  276. The ordinary people

  277. God uses

  278. in his purposes.

  279. Our three friends

  280. may be licking

  281. their lips

  282. after steak

  283. and milk

  284. and cheese,

  285. but it seems

  286. that they're much

  287. more than just

  288. hungry travellers.

  289. They know more

  290. about Abraham

  291. and Sarah

  292. than they first

  293. let on.

  294. Look at verse 9.

  295. Where is your wife

  296. Sarah?

  297. They asked him.

  298. There in the tent,

  299. he said.

  300. Then one of them

  301. said,

  302. I will surely

  303. return to you

  304. about this time

  305. next year

  306. and Sarah,

  307. your wife,

  308. will have a son.

  309. Now,

  310. through our studies

  311. in Genesis,

  312. promises of children

  313. to Abraham and Sarah

  314. are not new.

  315. But it seems

  316. God wants to

  317. remind them again

  318. that his plan

  319. of redemption

  320. is still on track.

  321. In fact,

  322. God is going

  323. to use

  324. a struggling

  325. servant

  326. like Sarah.

  327. first of all,

  328. notice

  329. the weakness

  330. of Sarah.

  331. Notice her weakness.

  332. Look at the rest

  333. of verse 10.

  334. Now,

  335. Sarah was listening

  336. at the entrance

  337. to the tent

  338. which was behind him.

  339. Abraham and Sarah

  340. were already

  341. very old

  342. and Sarah

  343. was past the age

  344. of childbearing.

  345. Sarah's biological

  346. clock,

  347. we could say,

  348. has already

  349. talked.

  350. The promise

  351. seems misplaced.

  352. Surely,

  353. he doesn't

  354. really mean

  355. what he's saying.

  356. Why is it

  357. that God

  358. insists

  359. that old

  360. Sarah

  361. is going

  362. to have

  363. a son?

  364. Well,

  365. because God

  366. wants us

  367. to see

  368. that redemption

  369. comes through

  370. weakness.

  371. Sarah may be

  372. done in

  373. and worn

  374. out,

  375. but she

  376. is going

  377. to have

  378. a son.

  379. You see,

  380. weakness

  381. is not

  382. a barrier

  383. to God.

  384. They're the

  385. kind of people

  386. God uses

  387. in his plans

  388. and in his

  389. purposes.

  390. It's the way

  391. in which

  392. God

  393. works.

  394. But it's

  395. not just

  396. her weakness.

  397. Notice

  398. the doubting

  399. of Sarah.

  400. The doubting

  401. of Sarah,

  402. verse 11.

  403. Abraham

  404. and Sarah

  405. were already

  406. very old

  407. and Sarah

  408. was past

  409. the age

  410. of childbearing.

  411. So Sarah

  412. laughed to

  413. herself as

  414. she thought,

  415. after I'm

  416. worn out

  417. and my

  418. Lord is

  419. old,

  420. will I

  421. now have

  422. this pleasure?

  423. You see,

  424. we wouldn't

  425. describe Sarah

  426. as a woman

  427. of confident

  428. faith.

  429. We wouldn't

  430. invite Sarah

  431. to come and

  432. speak at a

  433. conference on

  434. faith-building

  435. exercises.

  436. Me?

  437. Have a

  438. son?

  439. You've

  440. got to be

  441. joking.

  442. I have

  443. as much

  444. chance of

  445. getting pregnant

  446. as a dead

  447. camel winning

  448. a race.

  449. Me?

  450. It can't

  451. happen.

  452. It possibly

  453. couldn't

  454. happen.

  455. Well,

  456. the year

  457. will pass

  458. and as we'll

  459. see in

  460. chapter 21,

  461. Sarah does

  462. have a

  463. son.

  464. You see,

  465. it seems

  466. that God

  467. is not

  468. restricted

  469. by weak,

  470. doubting

  471. servants.

  472. God never

  473. writes people

  474. off and

  475. neither should

  476. we.

  477. Older women

  478. like Sarah

  479. have a

  480. vital role

  481. in God's

  482. work and

  483. in God's

  484. purposes.

  485. Essel and

  486. Vera were

  487. two old

  488. sisters.

  489. Essel was

  490. never married.

  491. Vera was

  492. married but

  493. she didn't

  494. ever have

  495. children.

  496. They were

  497. both timid.

  498. They were

  499. shy.

  500. They were

  501. quite reserved.

  502. Yet for

  503. 25 years

  504. they faithfully

  505. prayed and

  506. supported my

  507. dad while he

  508. was a pastor

  509. in Waterford.

  510. They held

  511. no title

  512. or any

  513. particular

  514. special role

  515. but yet

  516. they attended

  517. every meeting

  518. as they were

  519. able.

  520. They prayed

  521. for his

  522. children.

  523. rags like

  524. me.

  525. Encouraged

  526. my mum

  527. and gave

  528. when there

  529. were needs.

  530. To the

  531. world they

  532. were just

  533. weak and

  534. frail.

  535. They were

  536. nothing and

  537. nobodies.

  538. Yet in the

  539. hands of

  540. God they

  541. were the

  542. backbone you

  543. might say

  544. of a local

  545. church.

  546. You see

  547. the church

  548. always needs

  549. people like

  550. Ethel and

  551. Vera.

  552. He needs

  553. people like

  554. us.

  555. Of course

  556. it's not

  557. just older

  558. women that

  559. God uses.

  560. When it

  561. comes to

  562. God's work

  563. and God's

  564. purposes,

  565. age,

  566. whether you're

  567. young or

  568. old,

  569. gender,

  570. male or

  571. female,

  572. whatever your

  573. ability,

  574. whether you

  575. feel strong

  576. or struggling,

  577. it's not an

  578. issue for

  579. God.

  580. In fact

  581. God uses

  582. the weak

  583. and doubting,

  584. the suffering,

  585. the sinful,

  586. the broken.

  587. Why is it

  588. that God

  589. insists in

  590. doing his

  591. work like

  592. this?

  593. Well to

  594. show us

  595. that his

  596. plan of

  597. redemption

  598. will not

  599. be accomplished

  600. by my

  601. strength or

  602. your strength,

  603. not our

  604. faith but

  605. his faithfulness.

  606. It's like

  607. he delights

  608. in gathering

  609. nobodies and

  610. nothings and

  611. using us so

  612. that we might

  613. wonder,

  614. at God's

  615. amazing grace

  616. that he

  617. would work

  618. through me.

  619. The ordinary

  620. servant of

  621. God may be

  622. nothing in

  623. the eyes of

  624. the world

  625. but yet God

  626. uses weak

  627. servants to

  628. accomplish his

  629. purposes.

  630. So God

  631. might be much

  632. of a hurry

  633. but he will

  634. fulfil his

  635. plan of

  636. redemption.

  637. In the

  638. meantime we

  639. get on

  640. serving and

  641. we marvel at

  642. the fact

  643. that God

  644. by his

  645. grace can

  646. use people

  647. like us.

  648. So the

  649. ordinary ways

  650. in which

  651. God's people

  652. serve,

  653. the ordinary

  654. people God

  655. uses in his

  656. purposes and

  657. then third,

  658. the extraordinary

  659. ways in which

  660. God works.

  661. God

  662. will

  663. be able to

  664. build a

  665. nation and

  666. a people

  667. who in

  668. turn are

  669. going to

  670. be a

  671. blessing to

  672. the world

  673. seems to

  674. be too

  675. big to

  676. be true.

  677. And when we

  678. factor into

  679. all of it

  680. that the

  681. very foundation

  682. of it all

  683. starts with

  684. an old

  685. Abraham and

  686. a worn

  687. out Sarah,

  688. it just

  689. seems utterly

  690. impossible,

  691. doesn't it?

  692. yet look

  693. how God

  694. responds to

  695. our

  696. questioning

  697. doubts.

  698. Verse 13,

  699. Then the

  700. Lord said

  701. to Abraham,

  702. Why did

  703. Sarah laugh

  704. and say,

  705. Will I

  706. really have

  707. a child

  708. now that

  709. I'm old?

  710. Is

  711. anything

  712. too hard

  713. for the

  714. Lord?

  715. Well,

  716. the answer

  717. should be

  718. a resounding

  719. no.

  720. Nothing

  721. is too

  722. hard

  723. for the

  724. Lord.

  725. You see,

  726. we're dealing

  727. here with

  728. God

  729. Almighty,

  730. the one

  731. who spoke

  732. the universe

  733. into existence.

  734. Out of

  735. nothing,

  736. he brought

  737. this world

  738. into being.

  739. And if

  740. God is

  741. that all

  742. powerful

  743. life-giving

  744. source,

  745. then he

  746. can give

  747. life to

  748. all as

  749. he pleases.

  750. End of

  751. verse 14,

  752. I will

  753. return to

  754. you at

  755. the appointed

  756. time next

  757. year,

  758. and Sarah

  759. will have

  760. a son.

  761. Sarah

  762. was afraid,

  763. so she

  764. lied and

  765. said,

  766. no,

  767. I didn't

  768. laugh.

  769. But he

  770. said,

  771. yes,

  772. you did

  773. laugh.

  774. Now,

  775. like Sarah,

  776. we too

  777. might laugh

  778. at the

  779. impossibility

  780. of it

  781. all.

  782. When we

  783. think of

  784. God's

  785. promises

  786. to us,

  787. how could

  788. this ever

  789. happen?

  790. man?

  791. Well,

  792. don't

  793. laugh at

  794. what God

  795. promises to

  796. do.

  797. First,

  798. notice with

  799. me the

  800. plan of

  801. redemption

  802. in this

  803. story,

  804. the plan

  805. of redemption.

  806. God's plan

  807. of redemption

  808. is going to

  809. come through

  810. the family

  811. of Abraham,

  812. and as we

  813. follow the

  814. storyline of

  815. the Bible,

  816. God's promise

  817. is fulfilled

  818. in the

  819. most

  820. extraordinary

  821. of ways.

  822. Go with

  823. me,

  824. please,

  825. to Luke's

  826. Gospel,

  827. chapter 1.

  828. Luke's

  829. Gospel,

  830. chapter 1.

  831. And

  832. verse 31.

  833. An angel

  834. has appeared

  835. to Mary,

  836. a young

  837. teenage girl,

  838. and this

  839. is what the

  840. angel said,

  841. verse 31.

  842. You will

  843. conceive and

  844. give birth to

  845. a son,

  846. and you

  847. are to

  848. call him

  849. Jesus,

  850. the

  851. Saviour,

  852. the

  853. Messiah.

  854. Well,

  855. look at

  856. Mary's

  857. response,

  858. verse 34.

  859. How will

  860. this be?

  861. Mary asked

  862. the angel,

  863. since I

  864. am a

  865. virgin.

  866. That's

  867. impossible.

  868. These

  869. things don't

  870. happen.

  871. Mary understood

  872. her biology.

  873. Virgins

  874. can't be

  875. pregnant.

  876. Verse 35.

  877. The angel

  878. answered,

  879. the Holy

  880. Spirit will

  881. come on

  882. you,

  883. and the

  884. power of

  885. the Most

  886. High will

  887. overshadow

  888. you,

  889. and the

  890. Holy One

  891. born will

  892. be called

  893. the Son

  894. of God.

  895. verse 37.

  896. For no

  897. word from

  898. God

  899. will ever

  900. fail.

  901. Mary,

  902. nothing

  903. is too

  904. hard for

  905. God.

  906. Nothing.

  907. You see,

  908. God takes

  909. and uses

  910. a weak

  911. teenage

  912. virgin

  913. from the

  914. back end

  915. of nowhere,

  916. and says,

  917. you're going

  918. to have a

  919. son,

  920. and by the

  921. way,

  922. the child

  923. that you

  924. bear is

  925. going to

  926. be God's

  927. promised

  928. Messiah,

  929. the one

  930. who is

  931. going to

  932. bring the

  933. blessing of

  934. redemption

  935. to the

  936. world.

  937. Why does

  938. God make

  939. seemingly

  940. impossible

  941. promises

  942. and fulfill

  943. them through

  944. weak,

  945. humble

  946. servants?

  947. Because God

  948. wants us to

  949. see that his

  950. plan of

  951. redemption

  952. is a work

  953. of God.

  954. It's not

  955. something we

  956. do by

  957. ourselves,

  958. it's

  959. something

  960. that God

  961. does,

  962. and it's

  963. not too

  964. hard for

  965. him either.

  966. Verse 37,

  967. for no

  968. word from

  969. God will

  970. ever fail.

  971. What God

  972. says he

  973. will do,

  974. he will

  975. do.

  976. Now this

  977. is how God

  978. continues to

  979. work out his

  980. redemption in

  981. the lives of

  982. people like

  983. you and me.

  984. Jump forward

  985. with me,

  986. please,

  987. to chapter

  988. 18 of

  989. Luke's

  990. Gospel,

  991. chapter 18,

  992. and see

  993. here the

  994. possibility

  995. of

  996. redemption.

  997. Luke

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  998. chapter 18.

  999. In this

  1000. account,

  1001. a wealthy

  1002. man comes

  1003. to Jesus

  1004. wanting to

  1005. know what

  1006. he has to

  1007. do to

  1008. earn God's

  1009. redemption.

  1010. salvation.

  1011. And it

  1012. soon becomes

  1013. very clear

  1014. to him that

  1015. there is

  1016. nothing he

  1017. can do

  1018. to earn

  1019. his salvation.

  1020. Look at

  1021. what Jesus

  1022. says to

  1023. this wealthy

  1024. man.

  1025. Luke 18,

    Luke 18:24

  1026. verse 24.

  1027. Jesus

  1028. looked at him

  1029. and said,

  1030. how hard

  1031. it is for

  1032. the rich

  1033. to enter

  1034. the kingdom

  1035. of God.

  1036. Indeed,

  1037. it is easier

  1038. for a camel

  1039. to go through

  1040. the eye of

  1041. a needle

  1042. than for

  1043. someone who

  1044. is rich

  1045. to enter

  1046. the kingdom

  1047. of God.

  1048. The point

  1049. is simple

  1050. and clear.

  1051. Just as it's

  1052. impossible for

  1053. a camel

  1054. to fit through

  1055. the eye of

  1056. a needle,

  1057. so it's

  1058. impossible for

  1059. us by our

  1060. own efforts

  1061. to enter

  1062. into the

  1063. kingdom of

  1064. God.

  1065. it can't

  1066. happen.

  1067. It's just

  1068. not possible.

  1069. It's like

  1070. old women

  1071. having children

  1072. or virgins

  1073. getting pregnant.

  1074. That sort

  1075. of thing

  1076. can't happen.

  1077. Verse 26.

  1078. Those who

  1079. heard this

  1080. asked,

  1081. well then

  1082. who can

  1083. be saved?

  1084. What can

  1085. God do

  1086. in the lives

  1087. of people

  1088. to save

  1089. them?

  1090. Verse 27.

  1091. Jesus

  1092. replied,

  1093. what is

  1094. impossible

  1095. with man

  1096. is possible

  1097. with God.

  1098. What is

  1099. impossible

  1100. with man

  1101. is possible

  1102. with God.

  1103. You see,

  1104. we can never

  1105. save ourselves

  1106. and we can

  1107. never save

  1108. anybody else.

  1109. But what's

  1110. impossible for

  1111. us is what

  1112. God does.

  1113. This is what

  1114. he delights

  1115. sin doing.

  1116. How is

  1117. it possible?

  1118. Because God,

  1119. in his

  1120. redemption

  1121. plan,

  1122. sent his

  1123. son,

  1124. Jesus,

  1125. who came

  1126. to us

  1127. in humility

  1128. and weakness,

  1129. who bowed

  1130. before us

  1131. to say,

  1132. I am at

  1133. your service.

  1134. And he

  1135. served us

  1136. in the most

  1137. humbling of

  1138. ways,

  1139. by giving

  1140. his life

  1141. for us,

  1142. by dying

  1143. on a cross,

  1144. taking all

  1145. our failures

  1146. on himself,

  1147. so that

  1148. he might

  1149. secure

  1150. our

  1151. redemption

  1152. forever.

  1153. Now you

  1154. might be

  1155. thinking,

  1156. well,

  1157. my life

  1158. is a

  1159. mess.

  1160. I've

  1161. failed

  1162. too many

  1163. times.

  1164. I've

  1165. broken

  1166. too many

  1167. promises.

  1168. There's

  1169. no way

  1170. that God

  1171. can save

  1172. me.

  1173. Or maybe

  1174. you're

  1175. thinking,

  1176. I've got

  1177. a friend,

  1178. I've got

  1179. a family

  1180. member,

  1181. maybe

  1182. it's

  1183. your

  1184. mother

  1185. or your

  1186. father,

  1187. your

  1188. son,

  1189. or your

  1190. daughter,

  1191. and you're

  1192. thinking,

  1193. no way,

  1194. it's

  1195. impossible,

  1196. God

  1197. can't

  1198. save

  1199. them.

  1200. Well,

  1201. don't

  1202. laugh at

  1203. what God

  1204. can do.

  1205. Is

  1206. anything

  1207. too hard

  1208. for the

  1209. Lord?

  1210. What is

  1211. impossible

  1212. for man

  1213. is possible

  1214. with God.

  1215. redemption

  1216. might not

  1217. happen

  1218. according to

  1219. our

  1220. timing,

  1221. but that

  1222. doesn't

  1223. mean we

  1224. sit back

  1225. and do

  1226. nothing

  1227. and twiddle

  1228. our

  1229. thumbs.

  1230. We get

  1231. on with

  1232. the

  1233. ordinary,

  1234. everyday,

  1235. humble

  1236. acts of

  1237. service.

  1238. We

  1239. faithfully

  1240. pray.

  1241. We

  1242. obediently

  1243. share the

  1244. gospel.

  1245. We open

  1246. up our

  1247. homes and

  1248. invite people

  1249. in.

  1250. We get

  1251. alongside

  1252. people who

  1253. are struggling.

  1254. We use

  1255. the gifts

  1256. that God

  1257. has given

  1258. us to

  1259. be conduits

  1260. of his

  1261. amazing

  1262. grace.

  1263. God's

  1264. not in

  1265. a hurry,

  1266. but that

  1267. doesn't mean

  1268. nothing is

  1269. happening.

  1270. Don't

  1271. limit

  1272. and don't

  1273. laugh

  1274. at what

  1275. God can

  1276. do through

  1277. humble,

  1278. weak

  1279. servants

  1280. like you

  1281. and I.

  1282. God is

  1283. fulfilling

  1284. his purpose

  1285. and his

  1286. plan.

  1287. And God

  1288. will do

  1289. it.

  1290. And he

  1291. uses people

  1292. like us

  1293. as we

  1294. step out

  1295. in service

  1296. for him.

  1297. Let's

  1298. pray.

  1299. Father, we

  1300. confess that

  1301. we are

  1302. such a

  1303. rushing,

  1304. busy

  1305. people,

  1306. going from

  1307. one thing

  1308. to another,

  1309. never

  1310. slowing

  1311. down.

  1312. Father,

  1313. help us

  1314. that we

  1315. would slow

  1316. down and

  1317. see the

  1318. ways in

  1319. which we

  1320. can serve,

  1321. the things

  1322. that we

  1323. can do

  1324. to show

  1325. your grace

  1326. to others.

  1327. Father,

  1328. thank you

  1329. for your

  1330. plan of

  1331. redemption.

  1332. Thank you

  1333. for your

  1334. son, the

  1335. Lord Jesus

  1336. Christ.

  1337. Thank you

  1338. that nothing

  1339. when it

  1340. comes to

  1341. salvation is

  1342. impossible for

  1343. you, that

  1344. you have

  1345. accomplished

  1346. it all, and

  1347. you are

  1348. continuing your

  1349. work through

  1350. people like

  1351. us.

  1352. Thank you

  1353. for that.

  1354. So help

  1355. us to go

  1356. encouraged and

  1357. blessed today.

  1358. In Jesus'

  1359. name.

  1360. Amen.

  1361. we're going

  1362. to sing

  1363. together.

  1364. I will

  1365. glory in

  1366. my

  1367. Redeemer

  1368. as we

  1369. think about

  1370. the one

  1371. who came

  1372. to serve

  1373. us and

  1374. give his

  1375. life

  1376. for us.

  1377. We'll

  1378. stand

  1379. together

  1380. as we

  1381. sing.

  1382. Amen.

  1383. Amen.

  1384. Amen.

  1385. Amen.

  1386. Amen.

  1387. Amen.

  1388. Amen.

  1389. Amen.

  1390. Amen.

  1391. Amen.

  1392. Amen.

  1393. Amen.

  1394. Amen.

  1395. Amen.
