  1. Thank you.

  2. So we're going to read Genesis chapter 20 together.

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  3. Again, I encourage you, if you've missed any of the talks, you can follow back online.

  4. They're recorded and put up each week.

  5. Please avail of that. It's for you, for your good.

  6. So Genesis chapter 20, starting at verse 1.

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  7. Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur.

  8. For a while he stayed in Gerar.

  9. And there Abraham said of his wife Sarah,

  10. She is my sister.

  11. Then Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent for Sarah and took her.

  12. But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him,

  13. You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken.

  14. She is a married woman.

  15. Now Abimelech had not gone near her.

  16. So he said,

  17. Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation?

  18. Did he not say to me,

  19. She is my sister.

  20. And didn't she also say,

  21. He is my brother?

  22. Father, I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands.

  23. Then God said to him in the dream,

  24. Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience.

  25. And so I have kept you from sinning against me.

  26. That is why I did not let you touch her.

  27. Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet.

  28. And he will pray for you.

  29. And you will live.

  30. But if you do not return her,

  31. You may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.

  32. Early the next morning, Abimelech summoned all his officials.

  33. And when he told them all that had happened,

  34. They were very much afraid.

  35. Then Abimelech called Abraham in and said,

  36. What have you done to us?

  37. How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom?

  38. You have done things to me that should never be done.

  39. And Abimelech asked Abraham,

  40. What was your reason for doing this?

  41. Abraham replied,

  42. I said to myself,

  43. There is surely no fear of God in this place,

  44. And they will kill me because of my wife.

  45. Besides, she really is my sister,

  46. The daughter of my father,

  47. Though not of my mother,

  48. And she became my wife.

  49. And when God calls me to wander from my father's household,

  50. I said to her,

  51. This is how you can show your love to me.

  52. Everywhere we go,

  53. Say of me,

  54. He is my brother.

  55. Then Abimelech bought sheep,

  56. Cattle,

  57. And male and female slaves,

  58. And gave them to Abraham.

  59. And he returned Sarah, his wife, to him.

  60. And Abimelech said,

  61. My land is before you.

  62. Live wherever you like.

  63. To Sarah he said,

  64. I am giving your brother a thousand shekels of silver.

  65. This is to cover the offence against you

  66. Before all who are with you.

  67. You are completely vindicated.

  68. Then Abraham prayed to God,

  69. And God healed Abimelech,

  70. His wife and his female slaves,

  71. So that they could have children again.

  72. For the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelech's household

  73. From conceiving,

  74. Because of Abraham's wife, Sarah.

  75. Let's pray.

  76. Let's pray.

  77. Father, would you please speak to us in such a way

  78. That we can engage with your word with our minds,

  79. That we understand it.

  80. But would you deal with us,

  81. That we would engage with it in such a way

  82. That it changes our life,

  83. That we do business with you today, Father.

  84. That we would leave this building

  85. Changed and blessed

  86. Because of what you have done in us.

  87. We ask this from you

  88. Because without your work

  89. We are helpless to change anything in us.

  90. We need your help.

  91. Be gracious to us.

  92. And it's in your name we pray.

  93. Amen.

  94. Groundhog Day,

  95. I'm sure some of you are familiar with the phrase,

  96. But it's something

  97. That has happened before

  98. And that happens again.

  99. It's a recurring of the same event.

  100. This was portrayed in the film

  101. With the same title,

  102. Groundhog Day.

  103. The lead character was a man called Phil,

  104. A weatherman who confidently announced

  105. That the threatening snow blizzard

  106. Was going to bypass their city.

  107. Except for his predictions were all wrong.

  108. The blizzard struck

  109. And the city came to a standstill.

  110. And the whole film is all about Phil

  111. Who wakes up each morning

  112. And relives the same awful nightmare experience.

  113. It's like he's been caught up

  114. In this recurring loop.

  115. Well it seems Abraham

  116. Is having his own Groundhog Day.

  117. Have a look with me at verse 1.

  118. Now Abraham moved on from there.

  119. He was in the region of Sodom.

  120. And he moves down to the Negev

  121. And lived between Kadesh and Shur.

  122. So a new area for him to stay.

  123. For a while he stayed in Gerar.

  124. And there Abraham said of his wife Sarah,

  125. She is my sister.

  126. Now why would Abraham be saying something like that?

  127. Well Abraham was afraid

  128. That if they discovered Sarah was his wife

  129. They might kill him.

  130. So verse 2

  131. He comes up with a plan.

  132. Tell them she is my sister.

  133. And Abimelech king of Gerar

  134. Sent for Sarah

  135. And took her.

  136. Now you might be looking at that and go

  137. That sounds very familiar.

  138. And you'd be right.

  139. Have a look with me back to chapter 12

  140. For a freshener.

  141. Back to chapter 12.

  142. Abraham has just received God's promises

  143. That he will be a great nation.

  144. That he's going to have a family.

  145. And that all the nations of the world

  146. Will be blessed through him.

  147. But look what happens.

  148. Verse 11

  149. As Abraham was about to enter Egypt

  150. He said to his wife Sarah

  151. I know what a beautiful woman you are.

  152. When the Egyptians see you

  153. They will say

  154. This is his wife.

  155. Then they will kill me

  156. But will let you live.

  157. I know.

  158. Say you're my sister

  159. So that I will be treated well

  160. For your sake

  161. And my life will be spared

  162. Because of you.

  163. Familiar?

  164. Let's go back to chapter 20.

  165. Abraham has already been there

  166. Done that

  167. And got the t-shirt.

  168. It was a classic case of unbelief.

  169. God had repeated his promise to him

  170. Over and over and over again

  171. Specifically telling him

  172. That he would have a son

  173. Through Sarah.

  174. But it seems like he's forgotten

  175. All of those promises

  176. And once more chapter 20

  177. He steps out in unbelief.

  178. It's Groundhog Day.

  179. But let's not slam Abraham.

  180. We have our own Groundhog Days

  181. All the time.

  182. We too live by unbelief.

  183. The same recurring choices and decisions

  184. Not to believe God's promises

  185. Turn up again and again.

  186. Repeatedly we're reminded

  187. That with God

  188. We lack no good thing.

  189. That he's given us

  190. Every spiritual blessing in Christ.

  191. That he's given us

  192. Everything we need

  193. For a godly life.

  194. God reassures us

  195. Time and time again

  196. My grace is sufficient for you.

  197. But despite being promised

  198. All we need

  199. We still don't believe the promises

  200. Do we?

  201. We prefer to trust in other things

  202. And look to other people.

  203. Every day is like that recurring

  204. Groundhog Day.

  205. But we don't have to live in a cycle of unbelief.

  206. We don't have to live in a pattern of

  207. Continued sin.

  208. It can change.

  209. There is another way.

  210. But before we get there

  211. Let's look at how unbelief

  212. Is so serious

  213. And so devastating.

  214. First we want to see

  215. The serious effects

  216. Of living by unbelief.

  217. The serious effects

  218. Of living by unbelief.

  219. Unbelief is never

  220. An individual thing.

  221. It's never just about

  222. My choice and my decision

  223. That affects only me.

  224. Like when you throw a stone

  225. Into a pool

  226. So our acts of unbelief

  227. Have this ripple effects

  228. That fly out to other people.

  229. First it affects others.

  230. Look at verse 2.

  231. After all that Abraham had said

  232. Look at the end of verse 2.

  233. Abimelech, king of Gerar

  234. Sent for Sarah

  235. And took her.

  236. He takes a woman

  237. Who was married

  238. To someone else.

  239. Now it might well have been

  240. Unintentional

  241. Verse 5.

  242. Did he not say to me

  243. She is my sister

  244. And didn't she also say

  245. He is my brother?

  246. I've done this

  247. With a clear conscience

  248. And clear hands.

  249. Well yes it was

  250. Unintentional

  251. But it was still wrong.

  252. The point is

  253. Abraham's life

  254. Of unbelief

  255. Has led to the sinful choice

  256. Of Abimelech.

  257. You see none of us

  258. Can ever claim

  259. That my sin

  260. Is only personal

  261. And it affects

  262. Only me.

  263. This is my life

  264. And these are my decisions

  265. And they have no bearing

  266. On anybody else.

  267. No that's not right.

  268. How we live

  269. And how we behave

  270. Has a serious effect

  271. On others.

  272. It has this

  273. Ripple effect.

  274. In fact it's

  275. More dangerous

  276. Than that.

  277. Because we discover

  278. It's also against

  279. God.

  280. Look at verse 6.

  281. Then God said

  282. To Abimelech

  283. In the dream

  284. Yes I know

  285. You did this

  286. With a clear conscience

  287. And so I've kept you

  288. From sinning

  289. Against me.

  290. That is why

  291. I did not let you

  292. Touch her.

  293. You see Abimelech's

  294. Decision to take

  295. A wife

  296. That wasn't his

  297. Was not just

  298. Against Abraham

  299. And against Sarah.

  300. It would ultimately be

  301. As we see there

  302. In verse 6

  303. God says

  304. It would be

  305. Against me.

  306. Yes there is a

  307. Merciful intervention

  308. God kept him

  309. From taking Sarah

  310. To himself

  311. But to take Sarah

  312. As a wife

  313. Would be

  314. To sin against

  315. God.

  316. You see Abraham

  317. And Sarah

  318. Belong to God

  319. As does every

  320. Human being.

  321. He made us

  322. He owns us

  323. So to harm

  324. Another person

  325. To go against

  326. Another person

  327. Is in reality

  328. To go against

  329. God.

  330. He takes it

  331. Personally.

  332. So can you see

  333. The serious effects

  334. Of living by

  335. Unbelief.

  336. Abraham's decision

  337. Not to trust

  338. God and tell

  339. Lies about

  340. His wife

  341. Ends up

  342. With Abimelech

  343. Not only taking

  344. A wife that

  345. Doesn't belong

  346. To him

  347. But now he

  348. Finds himself

  349. Under God's

  350. Judgment.

  351. But more than

  352. That

  353. It all leads

  354. To death.

  355. Verse 3

  356. God came to

  357. Abimelech

  358. In a dream

  359. One night

  360. And said to

  361. Him

  362. You are as

  363. Good as

  364. Dead

  365. Because of

  366. The woman

  367. You've taken

  368. She's a

  369. Married woman.

  370. You see

  371. That's what

  372. Happens when

  373. We go against

  374. What God

  375. Says.

  376. We come under

  377. God's judgment

  378. And we die.

  379. You see

  380. Sin has this

  381. Ripple effect.

  382. It's never

  383. Just about

  384. Me and

  385. My life

  386. And the

  387. Things that

  388. I do

  389. And say

  390. It's all

  391. Up to

  392. Me.

  393. It doesn't

  394. Affect

  395. Anybody

  396. Else.

  397. It does

  398. Affect

  399. Everybody

  400. Else.

  401. And Abimelech's

  402. Sin is even

  403. Having a

  404. Wider effect

  405. In his

  406. Own family.

  407. Did you see

  408. That at the

  409. End of

  410. Verse 7?

  411. But if you

  412. Do not

  413. Return her

  414. You may

  415. Be sure

  416. That you

  417. And all

  418. Who belong

  419. To you

  420. Will die.

  421. So can you

  422. Follow the

  423. Thread of

  424. What's

  425. Happening here?

  426. Each person

  427. May be

  428. Held

  429. Responsible

  430. For their

  431. Actions

  432. But it

  433. All started

  434. With the

  435. Unbelief

  436. Of Abraham.

  437. He chose

  438. Not to

  439. Believe the

  440. Promises of

  441. God.

  442. And it

  443. Had a

  444. Serious

  445. Knock on

  446. Effect.

  447. Instead of

  448. Being the

  449. One who

  450. Brings

  451. Blessing

  452. To the

  453. Nations

  454. Because of

  455. His

  456. Behaviour

  457. He's now

  458. Bringing a

  459. Curse

  460. To the

  461. Nations.

  462. Maybe you

  463. Haven't

  464. Thought about

  465. This before

  466. But it

  467. Is a

  468. Theme that

  469. Runs all

  470. The way

  471. Through

  472. Scripture.

  473. Go forward

  474. With me

  475. Please to

  476. Exodus.

  477. It's the

  478. Next book

  479. In the

  480. Bible

  481. After

  482. Genesis.

  483. Exodus

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  484. Chapter

  485. 34.

  486. Exodus

  487. 34.

  488. And here

  489. In this

  490. Chapter

  491. God

  492. Reveals

  493. Himself

  494. To

  495. Moses.

  496. He shows

  497. Moses

  498. What his

  499. Character

  500. Is like.

  501. We'll pick it

  502. Up in

  503. Verse 6.

  504. Exodus

  505. 34.

  506. Verse 6.

  507. And he

  508. That's God

  509. Passed in

  510. Front of

  511. Moses

  512. Proclaiming

  513. The

  514. Lord

  515. The

  516. Lord

  517. The

  518. Compassionate

  519. And

  520. Gracious

  521. God

  522. Slow to

  523. Anger

  524. Abounding

  525. In

  526. Love

  527. And

  528. Faithfulness

  529. Maintaining

  530. Love

  531. To

  532. Thousands

  533. And

  534. Forgiving

  535. Wickedness

  536. Rebellion

  537. And

  538. Sin.

  539. Now look

  540. What else

  541. It says.

  542. And

  543. Parents

  544. Listen

  545. Carefully.

  546. Yet

  547. He does

  548. Not

  549. Leave

  550. The

  551. Guilty

  552. Unpunished.

  553. He

  554. Punishes

  555. The

  556. Children

  557. And

  558. Their

  559. Children

  560. For

  561. The

  562. Sin

  563. Of

  564. The

  565. Parents

  566. To

  567. The

  568. Third

  569. And

  570. Fourth

  571. Generation.

  572. You

  573. See

  574. My

  575. Behaviour

  576. As

  577. A

  578. Father

  579. My

  580. Sinful

  581. Behaviour

  582. Has

  583. An

  584. Effect

  585. As

  586. They

  587. Do

  588. What

  589. I

  590. Do

  591. And

  592. So

  593. It

  594. Goes

  595. On

  596. Down

  597. The

  598. Line

  599. Living

  600. By

  601. Unbelief

  602. Has

  603. A

  604. Terrible

  605. Ripple

  606. Effect

  607. That

  608. Reaches

  609. Far

  610. Beyond

  611. Our

  612. Own

  613. Life

  614. And

  615. If

  616. We

  617. Want

  618. To

  619. Get

  620. How

  621. Serious

  622. God

  623. Takes

  624. This

  625. Go

  626. With

  627. Me

  628. Please

  629. To

  630. Matthew

  631. Gospel

  632. Chapter

  634. Matthew

  636. Chapter

  638. First

  639. Book

  640. In

  641. The

  642. New

  643. Testament

  644. Jesus

  645. Here

  646. Has

  647. Been

  648. Teaching

  649. Little

  650. Children

  651. Small

  652. Ones

  653. Explaining

  654. That

  655. The

  656. Kingdom

  657. Of

  658. God

  659. Belongs

  660. To

  661. Them

  662. Too

  663. And

  664. That

  665. We

  666. Can

  667. Learn

  668. From

  669. Little

  670. Children

  671. And

  672. Then

  673. He

  674. Goes

  675. On

  676. To

  677. Say

  678. This

  690. Ones

  691. That

  692. Is

  693. Those

  694. Who

  697. Me

  698. To

  699. Stumble

  700. I

  701. That

  702. Their

  703. Let

  704. They

  705. Can't

  706. Come

  707. Like

  708. That

  709. illegitieness

  710. In hot

  711. has a serious effect on others.

  712. It can lead them to turn away from God

  713. and it can lead to our own judgment.

  714. Let's go back to Genesis 20.

  715. So first, the serious effects

  716. of living by unbelief.

  717. Second, there's the devastating impact

  718. of living by unbelief.

  719. You see, it not only affects others,

  720. it also, of course, has a deep

  721. and profound impact on us personally.

  722. So having been confronted by God,

  723. God now uses Abimelech

  724. to go and confront Abraham.

  725. Look at verse 10.

  726. And Abimelech asked Abraham,

  727. what was your reason for doing this?

  728. Why did you tell me so many lies?

  729. Why did you act like this?

  730. Well, Abraham responds,

  731. and I'm not sure if it's a confession

  732. or if he's just simply restating the facts.

  733. Either way, Abraham reveals

  734. the devastating impact

  735. of living by unbelief.

  736. It starts

  737. with not trusting God.

  738. Verse 11.

  739. Abraham replied,

  740. I said to myself,

  741. here's the reason for why I did what I did.

  742. There is surely no fear of God in this place

  743. and they will kill me because of my wife.

  744. Abraham assumed

  745. that in this new area he was living,

  746. his life would be in immediate danger.

  747. And in some ways,

  748. the threat was credible.

  749. That's what powerful kings like Abimelech could do.

  750. But remember,

  751. Abraham had a promise

  752. for situations like this.

  753. Go back to chapter 18

  754. and verse 13.

  755. Let's remind ourselves

  756. of what God had promised Abraham.

  757. Chapter 18, verse 13.

  758. Then the Lord said to Abraham,

  759. Why did Sarah laugh and say,

  760. Will I really have a child now that I'm old?

  761. Is anything too hard for the Lord?

  762. I will return to you

  763. at the appointed time next year

  764. and Sarah will have a son.

  765. You see, Abraham,

  766. do you remember what I told you?

  767. Nothing is too hard for the Lord.

  768. That means threats from powerful kings

  769. are not a problem.

  770. I don't need you, Abraham,

  771. to come up with your schemes

  772. to save the day.

  773. Abraham, I just want you

  774. to walk by faith

  775. and obey my promise.

  776. But he doesn't.

  777. In fact, it turns out

  778. that Abimelech seems to have

  779. more fear of God

  780. than Abraham has faith in God.

  781. He simply doesn't trust

  782. what God said

  783. and Abraham takes matters

  784. into his own hands.

  785. He puts his trust in self.

  786. Now, how many times

  787. do we believe our own thoughts

  788. over God's word?

  789. unbelief is subtle

  790. and can show up

  791. in all kinds of ways.

  792. It starts with not trusting God

  793. and it moves very quickly

  794. to blaming God.

  795. You see, when unbelief

  796. gets us into a pickle,

  797. well, it's not my fault,

  798. that's for sure.

  799. Look how Abraham continues,

  800. verse 13.

  801. And when God caused me

  802. to wander from my father's household,

  803. if God had never told me

  804. to leave my family home

  805. and to move to this new land,

  806. if God had just left me

  807. where I was,

  808. I was comfortable,

  809. everything was alright,

  810. if God,

  811. then none of this

  812. would have happened.

  813. You see, living by unbelief

  814. is never our fault, is it?

  815. It's God who got me

  816. into the mess

  817. and now I have to try

  818. and find a way out of it,

  819. even if it means disobedience.

  820. You see, we're all

  821. a little bit like Abraham.

  822. We're like his

  823. earlier

  824. great, great,

  825. I'm going to get confused now,

  826. but he's like Adam as well,

  827. in the Garden of Eden

  828. when God confronted him

  829. with his unbelief.

  830. Do you remember

  831. what Adam said?

  832. This is what he said to God,

  833. the woman

  834. you put here with me,

  835. she gave me

  836. some of the fruit

  837. from the tree

  838. and I ate it.

  839. God, if you

  840. didn't put this woman here,

  841. then I wouldn't be

  842. in this mess.

  843. It's not my fault.

  844. How often do we think

  845. if God didn't let this happen,

  846. if he changed this circumstance,

  847. if he changed this event,

  848. then it would be fine.

  849. You see, living by unbelief

  850. just leads to blaming God.

  851. In fact, it goes a step further

  852. and a step deeper.

  853. It leads to living as God.

  854. Look at verse 13 again.

  855. And when God

  856. caused me to wander

  857. from my father's household,

  858. I said to her,

  859. this is how you can

  860. show your love to me.

  861. Everywhere we go,

  862. say of me,

  863. he is my brother.

  864. This was the text

  865. that Abraham had

  866. at his front door

  867. of his house.

  868. It kind of ruled

  869. their lives.

  870. Everywhere they went,

  871. everywhere they travelled,

  872. this is how you can

  873. show your love to me.

  874. Remember,

  875. everywhere you go,

  876. say of me,

  877. he is my brother.

  878. He came up

  879. with his own rules.

  880. Ones that ensured

  881. he was kept safe.

  882. Of course,

  883. he presented it all

  884. as a wonderful act of love,

  885. wasn't it?

  886. This is how you can

  887. show your love to me.

  888. Oh, Sarah,

  889. if you really loved me,

  890. you would see that

  891. this is a good plan

  892. for your life.

  893. Never mind the harm

  894. it does to Sarah

  895. as long as Abraham

  896. is okay.

  897. You see,

  898. he is acting

  899. as if he is God,

  900. that he knows best

  901. and that he knows better.

  902. And that is what

  903. living by unbelief

  904. is all about.

  905. It is saying,

  906. I am God,

  907. this is my life,

  908. and I will do

  909. what I want

  910. for me.

  911. Can you see

  912. the devastating impact

  913. of living by unbelief?

  914. My thoughts

  915. replace

  916. God's word.

  917. My circumstances

  918. are God's fault.

  919. My life,

  920. my way.

  921. Doesn't it all

  922. sound so familiar?

  923. Doesn't it sound like

  924. our

  925. groundhog days?

  926. God's fault.

  927. It's not

  928. good.

  929. But here is the point

  930. of the whole text.

  931. We don't have

  932. to live like this.

  933. The cycle

  934. has been broken.

  935. We can live

  936. lives of faith

  937. and trust

  938. in God.

  939. So third,

  940. look at the

  941. gracious response

  942. to living

  943. by unbelief.

  944. The gracious

  945. response.

  946. chapter 20

  947. is certainly

  948. a tragic

  949. account.

  950. Abraham,

  951. the man of faith,

  952. is really Abraham,

  953. the man of

  954. unbelief.

  955. His actions

  956. have messed up

  957. the life of Abimelech

  958. and all his family

  959. and it's messed up

  960. his life

  961. and put his own

  962. wife in danger.

  963. And as readers

  964. of the text,

  965. as we read

  966. through it,

  967. we expect to read

  968. something like this.

  969. And God spoke

  970. to Abraham

  971. in a dream.

  972. That's it,

  973. Abraham.

  974. It's not going

  975. to work.

  976. I've given you

  977. every opportunity.

  978. I've given you

  979. chance after chance.

  980. I've reminded you

  981. of all my promises.

  982. It's not going

  983. to work.

  984. I'm going to have

  985. to look for

  986. someone I can

  987. trust.

  988. But that's not

  989. how it ends,

  990. is it?

  991. Because God

  992. amazingly

  993. responds in

  994. grace

  995. and kindness.

  996. He doesn't

  997. get the stick

  998. out.

  999. He doesn't

  1000. start berating

  1001. Abraham all

  1002. around the

  1003. place.

  1004. God

  1005. restores

  1006. Abraham

  1007. in all

  1008. of his

  1009. mess.

  1010. And he

  1011. does it

  1012. in two

  1013. ways.

  1014. First,

  1015. Abraham

  1016. is blessed

  1017. by God.

  1018. God

  1019. has obviously

  1020. been at work

  1021. in Abimelech's

  1022. life.

  1023. Let's read

  1024. about that

  1025. in verse

  1026. 7.

  1027. God

  1028. spoke to

  1029. Abimelech

  1030. and said,

  1031. Now return

  1032. the man's

  1033. wife,

  1034. for he is

  1035. a prophet,

  1036. and he

  1037. will pray

  1038. for you

  1039. and you

  1040. will live.

  1041. But if

  1042. you do

  1043. not return

  1044. her,

  1045. you may

  1046. be sure

  1047. that you

  1048. and all

  1049. who belong

  1050. to you

  1051. will die.

  1052. You see,

  1053. it's a call

  1054. to Abimelech

  1055. to repent,

  1056. to change

  1057. the way

  1058. you're going.

  1059. So,

  1060. returning

  1061. Abraham's

  1062. wife

  1063. is

  1064. repenting

  1065. of what

  1066. he had

  1067. done.

  1068. The

  1069. evidence

  1070. of his

  1071. repentance

  1072. is now

  1073. seen in

  1074. how he

  1075. treats

  1076. Abraham,

  1077. verse 14.

  1078. Then

  1079. Abimelech

  1080. bought

  1081. sheep

  1082. and cattle

  1083. and male

  1084. and female

  1085. slaves or

  1086. workers and

  1087. gave them

  1088. to Abraham

  1089. and he

  1090. returned

  1091. Sarah,

  1092. his wife,

  1093. to him.

  1094. And on

  1095. top of

  1096. all of

  1097. that,

  1098. Abimelech

  1099. said,

  1100. my land

  1101. is before

  1102. you,

  1103. live

  1104. wherever

  1105. you like.

  1106. Now,

  1107. aren't you

  1108. amazed

  1109. at how

  1110. Abraham,

  1111. who caused

  1112. all the

  1113. mess,

  1114. who lied

  1115. and brought

  1116. such misery

  1117. to Abimelech,

  1118. who put

  1119. his own

  1120. wife in

  1121. danger,

  1122. ends up

  1123. being

  1124. blessed.

  1125. We're reading

  1126. and go,

  1127. no,

  1128. that's not

  1129. right,

  1130. you can't

  1131. do that

  1132. sort of

  1133. thing,

  1134. it's not

  1135. fair.

  1136. If anything,

  1137. it should

  1138. be the

  1139. other way

  1140. around.

  1141. But that's

  1142. the extraordinary

  1143. way in which

  1144. God works.

  1145. God doesn't

  1146. treat us

  1147. as our

  1148. unbelief

  1149. deserves.

  1150. And God's

  1151. grace doesn't

  1152. even end

  1153. there.

  1154. Because look

  1155. what happens

  1156. next.

  1157. He not

  1158. only blesses

  1159. Abraham,

  1160. he now

  1161. starts

  1162. using

  1163. Abraham.

  1164. He uses

  1165. a man

  1166. of unbelief

  1167. to bring

  1168. blessing to

  1169. Abimelech.

  1170. Look at

  1171. verse 7

  1172. again.

  1173. God said

  1174. to Abimelech,

  1175. return the

  1176. man's wife,

  1177. for he is a

  1178. prophet,

  1179. and he

  1180. will pray

  1181. for you,

  1182. and you

  1183. will live.

  1184. Verse 17,

  1185. then Abraham

  1186. prayed to

  1187. God,

  1188. and God

  1189. healed

  1190. Abimelech,

  1191. his wife,

  1192. and his

  1193. female slaves,

  1194. so that they

  1195. could have

  1196. children again,

  1197. for the Lord

  1198. had kept all

  1199. the women

  1200. in Abimelech's

  1201. household from

  1202. conceiving

  1203. because of

  1204. Abraham's

  1205. wife,

  1206. Sarah.

  1207. Isn't it

  1208. extraordinary?

  1209. God uses

  1210. a sinner

  1211. like Abraham

  1212. to pray

  1213. for a

  1214. sinner

  1215. like Abimelech.

  1216. unbelieving

  1217. Abraham

  1218. gets down

  1219. on his

  1220. knees

  1221. and prays

  1222. for God's

  1223. blessing,

  1224. and Abimelech

  1225. gets blessed.

  1226. Isn't it

  1227. amazing?

  1228. And if

  1229. God can

  1230. use an

  1231. unbelieving

  1232. sinner like

  1233. Abraham

  1234. to bring

  1235. blessing to

  1236. another person,

  1237. how much

  1238. more will

  1239. God bring

  1240. his blessing

  1241. through the

  1242. faithful and

  1243. obedient

  1244. Son,

  1245. Jesus

  1246. Christ.

  1247. Not just

  1248. to one

  1249. person,

  1250. but bring

  1251. blessing

  1252. to all

  1253. nations.

  1254. You see,

  1255. it's not

  1256. that God

  1257. ignores

  1258. the

  1259. unbelief.

  1260. No,

  1261. God knew

  1262. there was

  1263. unbelief,

  1264. and God

  1265. had to

  1266. deal with

  1267. it,

  1268. so God

  1269. sent his

  1270. Son,

  1271. Jesus,

  1272. who was

  1273. treated on

  1274. the cross

  1275. as an

  1276. unbeliever

  1277. for you

  1278. and for

  1279. me,

  1280. and God

  1281. punished

  1282. our sin

  1283. in Jesus

  1284. so that

  1285. we could

  1286. be forgiven.

  1287. We are

  1288. blessed.

  1289. We were

  1290. reminded of

  1291. that blessing,

  1292. weren't we,

  1293. at the beginning

  1294. of our time

  1295. this morning.

  1296. Let me read

  1297. to you again

  1298. Psalm 32.

  1299. Blessed

  1300. is the one

  1301. whose transgressions

  1302. are forgiven,

  1303. whose sins

  1304. are covered.

  1305. Blessed

  1306. is the one

  1307. whose sin

  1308. the Lord

  1309. does not

  1310. count against

  1311. them,

  1312. and in

  1313. whose spirit

  1314. is no

  1315. deceit.

  1316. You know

  1317. right now

  1318. if you're

  1319. trusting

  1320. in the

  1321. Lord Jesus,

  1322. not one

  1323. of your

  1324. sins

  1325. are remembered

  1326. by God.

  1327. Not one.

  1328. As far

  1329. as the

  1330. east is

  1331. from the

  1332. west,

  1333. so far

  1334. as he

  1335. removed

  1336. every one

  1337. of them,

  1338. no longer

  1339. to be

  1340. remembered.

  1341. you are

  1342. blessed.

  1343. But more

  1344. than that,

  1345. it's blessing

  1346. upon blessing.

  1347. Ephesians 1.

  1348. Blessed.

  1349. He has

  1350. blessed us

  1351. in the

  1352. heavenly realms

  1353. with what?

  1354. Every

  1355. spiritual

  1356. blessing in

  1357. Christ.

  1358. Not just

  1359. some here

  1360. and there,

  1361. but every

  1362. spiritual

  1363. blessing.

  1364. We have

  1365. redemption

  1366. through his

  1367. blood,

  1368. the forgiveness

  1369. of sins

  1370. in accordance

  1371. with the

  1372. riches

  1373. of God's

  1374. grace

  1375. that he

  1376. has

  1377. lavished

  1378. upon us.

  1379. You see,

  1380. if you've

  1381. turned to

  1382. Jesus,

  1383. all your

  1384. moments of

  1385. unbelief,

  1386. all those

  1387. groundhog days

  1388. are no longer

  1389. held against

  1390. you.

  1391. you are

  1392. free from

  1393. guilt and

  1394. shame.

  1395. You are

  1396. loved and

  1397. treasured

  1398. forever.

  1399. You see,

  1400. we can look

  1401. at this text

  1402. together and

  1403. think,

  1404. oh, but my

  1405. life and the

  1406. knock-on effects

  1407. of the things

  1408. I have said

  1409. and the things

  1410. that I have

  1411. done and how

  1412. it's affected

  1413. my children

  1414. and how it's

  1415. affected this

  1416. person and that

  1417. person,

  1418. how could any

  1419. of that be

  1420. forgiven?

  1421. forgiven.

  1422. But this is

  1423. the good news

  1424. of the gospel.

  1425. It is all

  1426. forgiven.

  1427. It is no

  1428. longer held

  1429. against you.

  1430. It's no

  1431. longer held

  1432. against me.

  1433. It's all

  1434. been forgiven.

  1435. But not

  1436. only that,

  1437. he takes us

  1438. as messed up,

  1439. broken people

  1440. and he blesses

  1441. us and he

  1442. says,

  1443. now go

  1444. and be a

  1445. blessing

  1446. to other

  1447. people.

  1448. and perhaps

  1449. the best

  1450. way we can

  1451. start to

  1452. bring blessing

  1453. is like

  1454. Abraham,

  1455. to start

  1456. praying for

  1457. our children

  1458. and for our

  1459. families and

  1460. for our

  1461. friends to

  1462. get down on

  1463. our knees,

  1464. messed and

  1465. broken as we

  1466. are, but

  1467. yet God

  1468. using us to

  1469. bring blessing

  1470. to other

  1471. people.

  1472. You see,

  1473. God is

  1474. determined to

  1475. bring blessing

  1476. to the

  1477. nations and

  1478. God in his

  1479. grace will

  1480. use people

  1481. like us,

  1482. people who

  1483. are weak

  1484. and fragile

  1485. in faith but

  1486. are held up

  1487. in the

  1488. faithful hands

  1489. of God,

  1490. never holding

  1491. our sin

  1492. against us,

  1493. but filling

  1494. us with his

  1495. spirit and

  1496. sending us

  1497. into the

  1498. world and

  1499. into our

  1500. communities and

  1501. into our

  1502. families and

  1503. saying,

  1504. you can

  1505. be a

  1506. blessing.

  1507. We don't

  1508. have to

  1509. live in a

  1510. cycle of

  1511. unbelief.

  1512. We simply

  1513. believe in

  1514. God's promise

  1515. that we are

  1516. set free and

  1517. we are changed

  1518. and we can

  1519. live the life

  1520. that he has

  1521. called us to,

  1522. never to be

  1523. held back

  1524. again.

  1525. Let's just

  1526. take time to

  1527. reflect.

  1528. Let's

  1529. just take time

  1530. to reflect.

  1531. Father God,

  1532. we are

  1533. amazed

  1534. at your

  1535. kindness

  1536. in how you

  1537. respond to

  1538. us.

  1539. thank you

  1540. for your

  1541. grace afresh.

  1542. Thank you

  1543. that because

  1544. of your

  1545. son Jesus

  1546. Christ,

  1547. we are

  1548. blessed.

  1549. We are

  1550. made new.

  1551. We can

  1552. live a new

  1553. way.

  1554. Help us

  1555. this day

  1556. to not

  1557. only hear

  1558. the promises

  1559. you have,

  1560. but to

  1561. believe them

  1562. and to

  1563. live by

  1564. them.

  1565. in the

  1566. knowledge

  1567. that all

  1568. our sin

  1569. is forgiven,

  1570. never held

  1571. against us,

  1572. and that

  1573. because we

  1574. are now

  1575. your children

  1576. filled with

  1577. your spirit,

  1578. we can

  1579. go and

  1580. be a

  1581. blessing to

  1582. others.

  1583. No matter

  1584. how we feel

  1585. about ourselves,

  1586. no matter

  1587. what we

  1588. have done,

  1589. you can

  1590. use us.

  1591. Thank you,

  1592. Lord.

  1593. Thank you for

  1594. this privilege

  1595. and we

  1596. pray that

  1597. you will

  1598. indeed bless

  1599. our children

  1600. and bless

  1601. our families

  1602. and bless

  1603. our neighbours

  1604. and would

  1605. you,

  1606. Father,

  1607. please bring

  1608. them to

  1609. faith in

  1610. Jesus too

  1611. because you

  1612. are good

  1613. and you

  1614. are kind.

  1615. thank you,

  1616. Lord.

  1617. Amen.

  1618. Amen.

  1619. We're going to

  1620. sing together

  1621. a song that

  1622. will help us

  1623. to celebrate

  1624. the amazing

  1625. grace and the

  1626. amazing goodness

  1627. of God to

  1628. us.

  1629. I stand

  1630. amazed in

  1631. the presence

  1632. of Jesus

  1633. the Nazarene

  1634. and wonder

  1635. how he

  1636. could love

  1637. me.

  1638. How

  1639. marvellous,

  1640. how

  1641. wonderful.

  1642. I invite

  1643. you to

  1644. stand to

  1645. sing if

  1646. you're able.

  1647. Thank you.
