  1. Sarah lived to be 127 years old. She died at Kiriath Arba, that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.

  2. And Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.

  3. Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites.

  4. He said, I am a foreigner and a stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so that I can bury my dead.

  5. The Hittites replied to Abraham, Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs.

  6. None of us will refuse his tomb for burying your dead.

  7. Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites.

  8. He said to them, If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron, son of Zohar, on my behalf,

  9. so that he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field.

  10. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you.

  11. Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites

  12. who had come to the gate of his city.

  13. No, my lord, he said, listen to me.

  14. I give or I sell you the field and I sell you the cave that is in it.

  15. I sell it to you in the presence of my people.

  16. Bury your dead.

  17. Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land and he said to Ephron in his hearing,

  18. Listen to me, if you will, I will pay the price of the field.

  19. Accept it from me so that I can bury my dead there.

  20. Ephron answered Abraham, Listen to me, my lord.

  21. The land is worth 400 shekels of silver.

  22. But what is that between you and me?

  23. Bury your dead.

  24. Abraham agreed to Ephron's terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites,

  25. 400 shekels of silver according to the weight current among the merchants.

  26. So Ephron's field in Machpelah near Mamre, both the field and the cave in it,

  27. and all the trees within the borders of the field,

  28. was legally made over to Abraham as his property in the presence of the Hittites

  29. who would come to the gate of the city.

  30. Afterwards Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah near Mamre,

  31. which is at Hebron in the land of Canaan.

  32. So the field and the cave in it were legally made over to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.

  33. Interesting account.

  34. Let's pray.

  35. Father, we trust that every word written in Scripture is your word to us.

  36. None of it is wasted.

  37. All of it important.

  38. And so we pray and ask that by your Holy Spirit's power

  39. you would help us to concentrate

  40. and to hear your voice to us afresh,

  41. strengthening us

  42. and blessing us today.

  43. In Jesus' name we pray this.

  44. Amen.

  45. Well, it's a reality for us all, isn't it?

  46. Look at verse 1.

  47. Sarah lived to be 127 years old.

  48. She died at Curious Arbor.

  49. Sarah lived

  50. and Sarah died.

  51. It's the story of us all.

  52. Our day, or one day, our names will appear in RIP.ie.

  53. We mightn't live to be 127 years old,

  54. but the same words will tell the same story.

  55. Johnny lived

  56. and Johnny died.

  57. So the big question we all need to ask

  58. and what I want us to think about this morning

  59. is this.

  60. Am I ready

  61. to die?

  62. Am I ready?

  63. Is everything prepared

  64. for your funeral?

  65. You see, chapter 23

  66. seems to be all about Abraham

  67. looking for a grave

  68. to bury

  69. his wife Sarah.

  70. And not from being from these parts,

  71. he didn't have a family grave.

  72. There was no plot

  73. for him to go to.

  74. So Abraham has to go through

  75. the whole business

  76. of asking the local town council

  77. if he could buy some land.

  78. And he's very respectful about it.

  79. Look at verse 7.

  80. Abraham rose and bowed down

  81. before the people of the land.

  82. Verse 12.

  83. Again, Abraham bowed down

  84. before the people of the land.

  85. And finally,

  86. after a bit of wheeling and dealing,

  87. a place has been identified,

  88. the cave of Machpelah.

  89. And the price has been agreed,

  90. 400 shekels of silver.

  91. Handshakes all round.

  92. Abraham gets his grave

  93. and Ephron gets his money.

  94. And so,

  95. verse 19,

  96. afterwards,

  97. Abraham buried his wife Sarah

  98. in the cave of the field

  99. of Machpelah.

  100. Well, not much of a story, you say.

  101. There's nothing really here

  102. to hold our interest,

  103. just the sale

  104. of a piece of land.

  105. Why don't we move on

  106. to chapter 24,

  107. to the love story

  108. of Isaac and Rebecca?

  109. Well, before we do this,

  110. I think the whole story

  111. teaches us

  112. how we are to prepare

  113. for our own funeral.

  114. Not how we can go about

  115. buying a grave

  116. or how we can get

  117. the best price

  118. for our coffin,

  119. but how we are to live

  120. our life as we wait

  121. for that inevitable day.

  122. So, let's look at the text

  123. together and see

  124. how we can prepare

  125. for our own death.

  126. First,

  127. in preparation,

  128. live as strangers

  129. in the world.

  130. Live as strangers

  131. in the world.

  132. Abraham may have come

  133. from out of town,

  134. but he's been living

  135. in these parts

  136. for at least 80 years.

  137. He's hardly a blow-in.

  138. Yet, look how he sees himself.

  139. Verse 4.

  140. I am a foreigner

  141. and a stranger

  142. among you.

  143. Now, a foreigner

  144. was somebody

  145. who didn't have

  146. any rights.

  147. He didn't carry

  148. a passport.

  149. And a stranger

  150. meant that you had

  151. no land.

  152. He was at the mercy

  153. of the landlord.

  154. Now, we might think

  155. Abraham is a bit extreme

  156. in describing himself

  157. as a foreigner

  158. and a stranger.

  159. Even the locals

  160. saw him

  161. as somebody

  162. with greater honour.

  163. Look at verse 6.

  164. Sir, listen to us.

  165. You are a mighty prince

  166. among us.

  167. Abraham,

  168. you're one of us now.

  169. You're one of the family.

  170. No, Abraham understands

  171. his status.

  172. Verse 4.

  173. I am a foreigner

  174. and a stranger

  175. among you.

  176. He lives his life

  177. like a refugee

  178. or a displaced person.

  179. Now, why would he do that?

  180. Well, I think there's

  181. two reasons.

  182. Here's the first.

  183. Because he sees

  184. that life

  185. is temporary.

  186. For Abraham,

  187. this is how

  188. he viewed life.

  189. He saw life

  190. on this earth

  191. as a temporary

  192. dwelling place.

  193. He was just

  194. passing through.

  195. You see,

  196. Abraham and Sarah

  197. knew that they only

  198. had a fixed

  199. number of years

  200. to live.

  201. They understood

  202. that life was temporary

  203. and Sarah's death

  204. was a reminder

  205. of that.

  206. You see,

  207. most of us

  208. live

  209. as if we're going

  210. to be here

  211. forever.

  212. We plan our life

  213. as if we're never

  214. going to die.

  215. And if we do

  216. think about

  217. the future,

  218. we think about

  219. all that we're

  220. going to do

  221. in our retirement.

  222. No,

  223. this account

  224. reminds us

  225. that we are

  226. temporary

  227. beings.

  228. We live

  229. and we die.

  230. One day

  231. our names

  232. will appear

  233. in R.I.P.

  234. second reason

  235. is that

  236. Abraham knew

  237. this was not

  238. his home.

  239. Being a foreigner

  240. and a stranger,

  241. this earth

  242. was not

  243. home for him.

  244. In fact,

  245. that is the

  246. status and position

  247. of all

  248. of God's people.

  249. Peter,

  250. who was

  251. a disciple

  252. or apostle

  253. of Jesus,

  254. wrote a letter

  255. to a bunch

  256. of Christians

  257. who were going

  258. through a hard

  259. time.

  260. They were

  261. finding it

  262. difficult.

  263. And this is

  264. how he wrote,

  265. this is how he

  266. addressed them.

  267. To God's

  268. elect,

  269. strangers

  270. in the world,

  271. scattered.

  272. heard.

  273. And as the

  274. letter goes

  275. on,

  276. he encouraged

  277. them to

  278. live out

  279. their lives

  280. as foreigners

  281. and strangers

  282. here on

  283. earth.

  284. This is how

  285. God's people

  286. are to think

  287. of themselves.

  288. Now,

  289. I'm not

  290. suggesting that

  291. it's wrong

  292. to buy a

  293. house or

  294. that we

  295. should sell

  296. up all

  297. our goods

  298. and go

  299. and live

  300. off grid.

  301. No,

  302. it's about

  303. an attitude

  304. of our

  305. heart.

  306. One

  307. writer put

  308. it like

  309. this.

  310. Christians,

  311. that is

  312. followers of

  313. Jesus,

  314. are like

  315. immigrants,

  316. foreigners,

  317. temporary

  318. residents,

  319. refugees.

  320. We do

  321. not belong.

  322. We are

  323. outsiders.

  324. The death

  325. of Sarah

  326. was hard

  327. for Abraham.

  328. Look at

  329. the end

  330. of verse

  331. two.

  332. Abraham

  333. went to

  334. mourn

  335. for Sarah

  336. and to

  337. weep over

  338. her.

  339. Of course

  340. he would

  341. miss

  342. Sarah.

  343. They had

  344. been married

  345. for years.

  346. Yet in

  347. the sorrow

  348. he knew

  349. this was

  350. not the

  351. end.

  352. They were

  353. strangers

  354. on earth,

  355. temporary

  356. residents,

  357. longing

  358. for their

  359. eternal

  360. home.

  361. So let's

  362. ask ourselves

  363. the question

  364. how do

  365. you live

  366. your life?

  367. If you

  368. see this

  369. world as

  370. your only

  371. home,

  372. then life

  373. will be

  374. lived as

  375. one big

  376. bucket list.

  377. We live

  378. our life

  379. focused on

  380. what I

  381. want and

  382. doing

  383. everything

  384. that I

  385. please,

  386. planning our

  387. life all

  388. around the

  389. things I

  390. want to

  391. do.

  392. But if

  393. life is

  394. temporary,

  395. and if

  396. we understand

  397. that this

  398. earth is

  399. not our

  400. true home,

  401. then we

  402. will be

  403. outward

  404. focused.

  405. Instead of

  406. serving self,

  407. we will be

  408. serving others.

  409. We will be

  410. a generous

  411. and a kind

  412. person.

  413. Why?

  414. Because we

  415. know that

  416. everything that

  417. we have on

  418. this earth

  419. we're not

  420. going to

  421. take with

  422. us.

  423. It is all

  424. temporary.

  425. It will

  426. vanish in a

  427. puff of

  428. smoke.

  429. We are

  430. looking

  431. forward to

  432. our eternal

  433. home.

  434. So how

  435. do you

  436. prepare for

  437. your funeral?

  438. Well,

  439. first,

  440. live as a

  441. stranger here

  442. on earth.

  443. Second,

  444. in preparation,

  445. live by

  446. faith in

  447. God's

  448. promises.

  449. live by

  450. faith.

  451. Our first

  452. reading,

  453. chapter 23,

  454. seems to be

  455. all about

  456. Abraham just

  457. buying a

  458. grave.

  459. A plot

  460. has been

  461. identified,

  462. negotiations

  463. take place,

  464. the price

  465. is agreed,

  466. but finding

  467. a grave in

  468. the right

  469. place is

  470. all

  471. important.

  472. not because

  473. of the

  474. view,

  475. but because

  476. of the

  477. promises

  478. that have

  479. been made.

  480. Remember

  481. God's

  482. promises?

  483. Let's go

  484. back to

  485. chapter 12

  486. to remind

  487. ourselves just

  488. what God

  489. had promised.

  490. Chapter 12,

  491. there were

  492. three main

  493. promises that

  494. God made.

  495. chapter 12,

  496. verse 2,

  497. there was

  498. the promise

  499. of a

  500. people.

  501. God was

  502. going to

  503. bring about

  504. a people

  505. for himself

  506. through the

  507. family of

  508. Abraham.

  509. Verse 2,

  510. I will make

  511. you into a

  512. great nation

  513. and I will

  514. bless you.

  515. Then there

  516. was the

  517. promise of

  518. the people

  519. being blessed,

  520. end of

  521. verse 3,

  522. and all

  523. peoples on

  524. earth will

  525. be blessed

  526. through you.

  527. There would

  528. be a

  529. son coming

  530. from the

  531. line of

  532. Abraham who

  533. would bring

  534. blessing to

  535. all the

  536. nations.

  537. And then

  538. third,

  539. there was

  540. the promise

  541. of a

  542. place to

  543. live.

  544. Let's pick

  545. it up in

  546. verse 5.

  547. Abraham

  548. took his

  549. wife Sarai

  550. and his

  551. nephew Lot

  552. and all the

  553. possessions

  554. they had

  555. accumulated

  556. and the

  557. people they

  558. had acquired

  559. in Haran

  560. and they

  561. set out

  562. for the

  563. land of

  564. Canaan.

  565. Now

  566. underline

  567. that.

  568. Canaan.

  569. And they

  570. arrived there.

  571. Verse 7,

  572. The Lord

  573. appeared to

  574. Abraham and

  575. said,

  576. To your

  577. offspring I

  578. will give

  579. this land.

  580. So God's

  581. people will

  582. be in

  583. God's

  584. place and

  585. they will

  586. be blessed.

  587. Now it's

  588. important to

  589. understand that

  590. this promise

  591. was crucial

  592. and Abraham

  593. needed reminded

  594. of it.

  595. So look at

  596. chapter 17

  597. verse 8.

  598. God reminds

  599. him again of

  600. this promise.

  601. Chapter 17

  602. verse 8.

  603. The whole

  604. land of

  605. Canaan

  606. where you

  607. now reside

  608. as a

  609. foreigner

  610. I will

  611. give as

  612. an everlasting

  613. possession to

  614. you and to

  615. your descendants

  616. after you

  617. and I will

  618. be their

  619. God.

  620. Back to

  621. chapter 23.

  622. So there we

  623. have it.

  624. God's

  625. great promises

  626. that he

  627. will have a

  628. people who

  629. will have a

  630. place to

  631. live in

  632. and they

  633. will be

  634. blessed.

  635. Yet despite

  636. all of these

  637. promises

  638. Abraham still

  639. has no

  640. land.

  641. He doesn't

  642. own anything.

  643. In fact he's

  644. having to

  645. negotiate with

  646. the locals

  647. to try and

  648. buy a

  649. small field.

  650. Now just

  651. because Abraham

  652. has no

  653. land doesn't

  654. mean that God

  655. has forgotten.

  656. What God

  657. says God

  658. does.

  659. What God

  660. promises God

  661. will fulfil.

  662. It mightn't

  663. be according

  664. to our

  665. timing and

  666. it mightn't

  667. be in the

  668. way that we

  669. expect but

  670. God will

  671. fulfil his

  672. promises.

  673. So armed

  674. with that

  675. promise Abraham

  676. now claims

  677. the promise.

  678. Remember the

  679. land that God

  680. had promised to

  681. Abraham was

  682. the land

  683. of Canaan.

  684. Now look

  685. where Sarah

  686. dies in

  687. verse 2.

  688. She died

  689. at Kirias

  690. Arba,

  691. that is

  692. Hebron,

  693. in the land

  694. of Canaan.

  695. And where

  696. is she

  697. buried?

  698. Well look

  699. at verse 19.

  700. Afterwards

  701. Abraham buried

  702. his wife Sarah

  703. in the cave

  704. in the field

  705. of Machpelah

  706. near Mamre

  707. which is at

  708. Hebron

  709. in the land

  710. of Canaan.

  711. You see

  712. Abraham is

  713. looking forward

  714. in faith

  715. to what God

  716. had promised.

  717. And as a sign

  718. of his faith

  719. in God's

  720. promise

  721. he buys up

  722. a piece of

  723. land.

  724. He buys a

  725. burial site

  726. in Canaan.

  727. It's not a lot

  728. of land,

  729. it's just a field

  730. with a cave

  731. at the end,

  732. a few rocks.

  733. But it is

  734. a piece

  735. of the land

  736. that God

  737. had promised.

  738. You wouldn't

  739. call it

  740. prime real estate

  741. but it is

  742. a foretaste

  743. of what will

  744. one day

  745. be received

  746. and one day

  747. enjoyed.

  748. You see

  749. Abraham

  750. was investing

  751. in his

  752. promised

  753. inheritance.

  754. Verse 14.

  755. Ephron

  756. answered

  757. Abraham,

  758. Listen to me

  759. my lord,

  760. the land

  761. is worth

  762. 400 shekels

  763. of silver.

  764. That's over

  765. a year's

  766. wages.

  767. That's a lot

  768. of money.

  769. But what is

  770. that between

  771. you and me?

  772. Come on,

  773. let's do the

  774. deal and you

  775. can bury

  776. your debt.

  777. So Abraham

  778. agreed to

  779. Ephron's

  780. terms and

  781. weighed out

  782. for him

  783. the price

  784. he had

  785. named in

  786. the hearing

  787. of the

  788. Hittites

  789. 400 shekels

  790. of silver

  791. according to

  792. the weight

  793. current among

  794. the merchants.

  795. In other

  796. words,

  797. the scales

  798. were tipped

  799. in favour

  800. of the

  801. seller.

  802. Seems

  803. crazy money,

  804. doesn't it?

  805. Surely Abraham

  806. could have

  807. negotiated a bit

  808. better and got

  809. a better price.

  810. He could have

  811. even gone

  812. across the border

  813. and found

  814. something a

  815. little bit

  816. cheaper.

  817. No, it may

  818. seem a lot

  819. of dosh,

  820. a lot of

  821. money to

  822. spend on a

  823. burial site,

  824. but this was

  825. an investment

  826. in something

  827. to come and

  828. you couldn't

  829. put a price

  830. on that.

  831. For Abraham,

  832. this burial

  833. site pointed

  834. to something

  835. greater and

  836. far more

  837. eternal.

  838. come with

  839. me,

  840. please,

  841. to Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  842. chapter 11.

  843. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  844. chapter 11,

  845. as we've

  846. seen over

  847. the weeks,

  848. is crucial

  849. to our

  850. understanding

  851. the life

  852. of Abraham.

  853. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  854. chapter 11.

  855. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  856. chapter 11.

  857. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  858. chapter 11.

  859. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  860. chapter 11.

  861. Here the

  862. writer helps

  863. us understand

  864. Abraham's

  865. faith and

  866. all that he

  867. was looking

  868. forward to.

  869. We'll pick

  870. it up in

  871. verse 8.

  872. By faith,

  873. Abraham,

  874. when called

  875. to go to

  876. a place

  877. he would

  878. later receive

  879. as his

  880. inheritance,

  881. obedience,

  882. obeyed and

  883. went,

  884. even though

  885. he didn't

  886. know where

  887. he was

  888. going.

  889. By faith,

  890. he made

  891. his home

  892. in the

  893. promised land,

  894. like a

  895. stranger and

  896. in a

  897. foreign

  898. country.

  899. He lived

  900. in tents,

  901. as did

  902. his children,

  903. Isaac and

  904. grandchildren,

  905. Jacob,

  906. who were

  907. heirs with

  908. him of the

  909. same promise.

  910. life.

  911. Why would

  912. he live

  913. like that?

  914. Because for

  915. Abraham,

  916. life was

  917. temporary.

  918. This was

  919. not his

  920. home.

  921. Why?

  922. Verse 10.

  923. For he

  924. was looking

  925. forward to

  926. the city

  927. with foundations,

  928. whose architect

  929. and builder

  930. is God.

  931. God.

  932. Look,

  933. when Abraham

  934. acquired the

  935. piece of

  936. land,

  937. he was

  938. claiming his

  939. inheritance by

  940. faith in

  941. what God

  942. had promised

  943. him.

  944. You see,

  945. the physical

  946. land of

  947. Canaan pointed

  948. to a better

  949. and more

  950. eternal land,

  951. a city built

  952. by God,

  953. the land of

  954. the new

  955. heavens and

  956. the new

  957. earth,

  958. the world

  959. that God

  960. will one

  961. day put

  962. right,

  963. the world

  964. where there

  965. will be no

  966. more suffering

  967. or struggles

  968. and no

  969. more death.

  970. This is

  971. what God

  972. has promised

  973. to all

  974. of God's

  975. people.

  976. We have

  977. a glorious

  978. inheritance,

  979. God's

  980. people in

  981. God's

  982. place in

  983. a land,

  984. an eternal

  985. land full

  986. of blessing

  987. and you

  988. can't put

  989. a value

  990. on that.

  991. This is

  992. an inheritance

  993. that no

  994. money can

  995. buy.

  996. In fact,

  997. if we

  998. want to

  999. be part

  1000. of it,

  1001. we can

  1002. claim that

  1003. inheritance

  1004. by faith

  1005. in God's

  1006. promise.

  1007. This is

  1008. something God

  1009. delights in

  1010. giving freely

  1011. to all who

  1012. will trust

  1013. him.

  1014. Isn't

  1015. this

  1016. something

  1017. worth

  1018. investing

  1019. in with

  1020. all of

  1021. your life,

  1022. whatever

  1023. may come,

  1024. so that

  1025. you may

  1026. gain

  1027. eternity

  1028. and a

  1029. home

  1030. forever.

  1031. So how

  1032. do we

  1033. prepare for

  1034. our funeral?

  1035. Well,

  1036. we live

  1037. as strangers

  1038. and we

  1039. live by

  1040. faith in

  1041. the promise

  1042. of God.

  1043. And

  1044. continuing in

  1045. preparation,

  1046. we live

  1047. with the

  1048. hope of

  1049. the resurrection.

  1050. We live

  1051. with hope.

  1052. Let's go

  1053. back to

  1054. chapter 23

  1055. of Genesis.

  1056. Abraham

  1057. claimed the

  1058. promise.

  1059. He

  1060. bought his

  1061. burial

  1062. site,

  1063. a cave

  1064. at the

  1065. end of

  1066. a field.

  1067. As far

  1068. as Ephron

  1069. was concerned,

  1070. this land

  1071. wasn't worth

  1072. keeping,

  1073. not much

  1074. value.

  1075. Yet to

  1076. Abraham,

  1077. this burial

  1078. tomb

  1079. filled him

  1080. with hope.

  1081. You see,

  1082. hope in the

  1083. Bible is not

  1084. wishful

  1085. thinking.

  1086. It's

  1087. absolute

  1088. confidence

  1089. and complete

  1090. assurance.

  1091. It's

  1092. 100%

  1093. guaranteed.

  1094. And that's

  1095. what the

  1096. burial

  1097. site for

  1098. Abraham

  1099. represented.

  1100. Sure

  1101. and certain

  1102. hope.

  1103. Look at

  1104. verse 17.

  1105. So Ephron's

  1106. field in

  1107. Machpelah

  1108. near Mamre,

  1109. both the

  1110. field and

  1111. the cave

  1112. in it,

  1113. and all

  1114. the trees

  1115. within the

  1116. borders of

  1117. that field

  1118. was legally

  1119. made over

  1120. to Abraham

  1121. as his

  1122. property

  1123. in the

  1124. presence of

  1125. all the

  1126. Hittites

  1127. who had

  1128. come to

  1129. the gate

  1130. of the

  1131. city.

  1132. Verse 20.

  1133. So the

  1134. field and

  1135. the cave

  1136. in it

  1137. were legally

  1138. made over

  1139. to Abraham

  1140. by the

  1141. Hittites

  1142. as a

  1143. burial

  1144. site.

  1145. The legal

  1146. documents

  1147. were signed

  1148. and sealed.

  1149. The deal

  1150. has been

  1151. done.

  1152. It can't

  1153. be undone

  1154. or rewritten.

  1155. It's legally

  1156. binding.

  1157. This plot

  1158. of land,

  1159. this burial

  1160. site,

  1161. belongs to

  1162. him now

  1163. and forever.

  1164. He now

  1165. has a stake

  1166. in the

  1167. promised land.

  1168. You see,

  1169. for Abraham,

  1170. this grave

  1171. was a source

  1172. of a

  1173. strange

  1174. kind of

  1175. comfort.

  1176. Yes,

  1177. he buried

  1178. and grieved

  1179. for his

  1180. wife,

  1181. but this

  1182. grave also

  1183. filled him

  1184. with hope.

  1185. It was a

  1186. reminder of

  1187. his glorious

  1188. and eternal

  1189. inheritance,

  1190. an inheritance

  1191. that belonged

  1192. to him and

  1193. it was secured

  1194. forever by

  1195. God's

  1196. promises.

  1197. Nothing and

  1198. no one could

  1199. undo what

  1200. God promises.

  1201. Nothing can

  1202. take away

  1203. with what

  1204. God will

  1205. fulfil.

  1206. Isn't it

  1207. strange

  1208. how a

  1209. burial

  1210. tomb

  1211. can fill

  1212. a person

  1213. with such

  1214. great

  1215. hope?

  1216. Well,

  1217. for us,

  1218. there is a

  1219. greater hope

  1220. to be found

  1221. in another

  1222. burial

  1223. tomb,

  1224. but this

  1225. one

  1226. is empty.

  1227. The

  1228. promise that

  1229. Abraham looked

  1230. forward to

  1231. becomes a

  1232. reality

  1233. through the

  1234. death and

  1235. resurrection

  1236. of Jesus

  1237. Christ.

  1238. You see,

  1239. Jesus,

  1240. the promised

  1241. son of

  1242. Abraham,

  1243. the God

  1244. man,

  1245. came into

  1246. the world

  1247. to live as

  1248. a foreigner

  1249. and a

  1250. stranger

  1251. amongst us.

  1252. He had

  1253. no rights.

  1254. God

  1255. He had no

  1256. home.

  1257. He came to

  1258. this world

  1259. with an

  1260. outward

  1261. focus,

  1262. not to be

  1263. served,

  1264. but to

  1265. serve.

  1266. And to

  1267. serve by

  1268. giving his

  1269. life as a

  1270. ransom.

  1271. He died

  1272. our death,

  1273. taking the

  1274. blame for the

  1275. wrong things

  1276. we have done.

  1277. and he

  1278. was placed

  1279. in a

  1280. cave,

  1281. a burial

  1282. tomb.

  1283. There

  1284. Jesus

  1285. was buried.

  1286. But this

  1287. was only a

  1288. temporary

  1289. tomb,

  1290. because three

  1291. days later,

  1292. Jesus Christ

  1293. physically and

  1294. bodily walked

  1295. out of that

  1296. tomb.

  1297. He crushed

  1298. death,

  1299. he destroyed

  1300. the grave,

  1301. and he secured

  1302. for us our

  1303. eternal

  1304. inheritance.

  1305. inheritance.

  1306. Who would

  1307. have ever

  1308. thought that

  1309. you could

  1310. find such

  1311. hope in a

  1312. burial site?

  1313. You see,

  1314. faith in

  1315. Jesus Christ

  1316. gives us

  1317. absolute

  1318. confidence and

  1319. complete assurance

  1320. that our

  1321. eternal destiny

  1322. is secure.

  1323. What Jesus

  1324. has done on

  1325. the cross and

  1326. through his

  1327. resurrection seals

  1328. the deal.

  1329. it can't be

  1330. undone.

  1331. It can't be

  1332. rewritten.

  1333. It's secure

  1334. forever.

  1335. Sarah lived

  1336. and Sarah

  1337. died.

  1338. Johnny lives

  1339. and one day

  1340. Johnny will

  1341. die.

  1342. die.

  1343. But that's

  1344. not the end

  1345. of the story,

  1346. is it?

  1347. We have

  1348. hope,

  1349. absolute

  1350. confidence,

  1351. and complete

  1352. assurance.

  1353. So are you

  1354. ready to die?

  1355. Have you

  1356. made preparations

  1357. for your

  1358. funeral?

  1359. people?

  1360. Well, to

  1361. prepare for

  1362. that inevitable

  1363. day, we

  1364. are to live

  1365. as strangers.

  1366. We are to

  1367. live in

  1368. faith and

  1369. we live

  1370. with hope.

  1371. As we

  1372. close, I'd

  1373. like us to

  1374. turn, please,

  1375. to 1

  1376. Peter.

  1377. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  1378. chapter 1.

  1379. This is the

  1380. letter where

  1381. all God's

  1382. people are

  1383. referred to

  1384. as foreigners

  1385. and strangers.

  1386. We live our

  1387. life here

  1388. temporarily.

  1389. This world

  1390. is not our

  1391. home.

  1392. We are

  1393. longing for

  1394. something better

  1395. and greater.

  1396. And here

  1397. is a

  1398. promise

  1399. that is

  1400. worth

  1401. investing

  1402. your life

  1403. in.

  1404. Giving

  1405. your all

  1406. for

  1407. something

  1408. to

  1409. something

  1410. that you

  1411. can never

  1412. ever lose.

  1413. Let's

  1414. Peter

  1415. chapter 1

  1416. verses

  1417. 3 to

  1418. 5

  1419. as we

  1420. reflect and

  1421. meditate

  1422. on God's

  1423. great

  1424. promise.

  1425. Praise be

  1426. to the

  1427. God and

  1428. Father of

  1429. our Lord

  1430. Jesus

  1431. Christ.

  1432. In his

  1433. great

  1434. mercy,

  1435. he has

  1436. given us

  1437. new birth,

  1438. a new

  1439. beginning,

  1440. a new

  1441. life,

  1442. into a

  1443. living hope

  1444. through the

  1445. resurrection of

  1446. Jesus Christ

  1447. from the

  1448. dead,

  1449. and into

  1450. an inheritance

  1451. that can

  1452. never perish,

  1453. spoil,

  1454. or fade.

  1455. This

  1456. inheritance

  1457. is kept

  1458. in heaven

  1459. for you

  1460. who through

  1461. faith are

  1462. shielded by

  1463. God's power

  1464. until the

  1465. coming of

  1466. the salvation

  1467. that is

  1468. ready to be

  1469. revealed

  1470. in the

  1471. last time.

  1472. God

  1473. grew,

  1474. and

  1475. render

  1476. its

  1477. God's power

  1478. tiens.

  1479. and

  1480. we

  1481. praise you,

  1482. Lord God Almighty

1483. Father, Son and Holy Spirit

1484. for the life that we have received

  1485. by faith

1486. for the promises that are now ours

1487. because of Christ's resurrection from the dead

1488. help us to live our life

  1489. as strangers

  1490. living our life temporarily

1491. longing for our eternal home

  1492. walking each day

1493. by faith in the sure and certain promises of God

  1494. looking forward

1495. and longing for our eternal home

  1496. that will never perish

  1497. spoil or fade

1498. thank you that heaven is kept for us

1499. and that we are kept for heaven

  1500. help us to prepare

  1501. for our funeral

  1502. for our good

  1503. and for your glory

  1504. Amen

1505. Well I'm sure there's many songs that we could sing in response

1506. to what we've just thought about

1507. but here's one that fits well

  1508. what is our hope

  1509. in life and death

1510. if this is where your faith is

1511. then you will want to sing

  1512. and answer

  1513. Christ alone

  1514. Christ alone

1515. I encourage you if you're able to stand and sing

1516. and to sing to one another

  1517. to encourage us

1518. as we live our lives

  1519. here on this earth

  1520. God bless you

  1521. I need you

  1522. I need you

  1523. to bring you
