  1. Chapter 24.

  2. Last week we were in chapter 23.

  3. We were at a funeral.

  4. Today we're at a wedding.

  5. It's the longest chapter in Genesis,

  6. in case you ever have a question like that.

  7. And it's all about Isaac meeting Rebecca.

  8. But what can we learn?

  9. Well, let's read God's Word.

  10. We're not going to read all the chapter.

  11. We're going to go as far as verse 28,

  12. and then we'll pick up the end of the account.

  13. So let's start in chapter 24, verse 1.

  14. Abraham was now very old,

  15. and the Lord had blessed him in every way.

  16. He said to the senior servant in his household,

  17. the one in charge of all that he had,

  18. put your hand under my thigh.

  19. It was a symbol, a sign of making an oath or a promise.

  20. He says,

  21. I want to swear by the Lord,

  22. the God of heaven and the God of earth,

  23. that you will not get a wife for my son

  24. from the daughters of the Canaanites,

  25. among whom I'm a living,

  26. but will go to my country and my own relatives

  27. and get a wife for my son Isaac.

  28. The servant asked him,

  29. what if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?

  30. Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?

  31. Make sure that you do not take my son back there,

  32. Abraham said.

  33. The Lord,

  34. the God of heaven,

  35. who bought me out of my father's household

  36. and my native land,

  37. and who spoke to me and promised me on oath,

  38. saying,

  39. to your offspring,

  40. I will give this land.

  41. He will send his angel before you

  42. so that you can get a wife for my son from there.

  43. If the woman is unwilling to come back with you,

  44. then you will be released from this oath of mine.

  45. Only do not take my son back there.

  46. So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham

  47. and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.

  48. Then the servant left,

  49. taking with him ten of the master's camels,

  50. loaded with all kinds of good things from his master.

  51. He set out for Aram Naharim

  52. and made his way to the town of Nahor.

  53. He made the camels kneel down the well

  54. outside the town.

  55. It was towards evening,

  56. the time that the women go out to draw water.

  57. Then he prayed,

  58. Lord God of my master Abraham,

  59. make me successful today

  60. and show kindness to my master Abraham.

  61. See, I am standing beside this spring

  62. and the daughters of the townspeople

  63. are coming out to draw water.

  64. May it be that when I say to a young woman,

  65. please let down your jar

  66. that I may have a drink.

  67. And she says,

  68. drink and I'll water your camels too.

  69. Let her be the one

  70. that you have chosen for your servant Isaac.

  71. By this I will know

  72. that you have shown kindness

  73. to my master.

  74. Before he had finished praying,

  75. Rebecca came out with her jar on her shoulder.

  76. She was the daughter of Bethuel,

  77. son of Milcah,

  78. who was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor.

  79. The woman was very beautiful,

  80. a virgin.

  81. No man had ever slept with her.

  82. She went down to the spring,

  83. filled her jar,

  84. came up again.

  85. The servant hurried to meet her and said,

  86. please give me a little water from your jar.

  87. Drink, my lord, she said,

  88. and quickly lowered the jar to her hands

  89. and gave him a drink.

  90. After she had given him a drink,

  91. she said,

  92. I'll draw water for your camels too

  93. until they have had enough to drink.

  94. So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough,

  95. ran back to the well to draw more water

  96. and drew enough for all his camels.

  97. Without saying a word,

  98. the man watched her closely

  99. to learn whether or not

  100. the Lord had made his journey successful.

  101. When the camels had finished drinking,

  102. the man took out a gold nose ring

  103. weighing a becca

  104. and two gold bracelets

  105. weighing ten shekels.

  106. Then he asked,

  107. whose daughter are you?

  108. Please tell me,

  109. is there room in your father's house

  110. for us to spend the night?

  111. She answered him,

  112. I am the daughter of Bethuel,

  113. the son of Milcah,

  114. born to Nahor.

  115. And she added,

  116. we have plenty of straw and fodder

  117. as well as room for you to spend the night.

  118. Then the man bowed down

  119. and worshipped the Lord saying,

  120. praise be to the Lord,

  121. the God of my master Abraham,

  122. who has not abandoned his kindness to

  123. and his faithfulness to my master.

  124. As for me,

  125. the Lord has led me on the journey

  126. to the house of my master's relatives.

  127. The young woman ran and told her mother's household

  128. about these things.

  129. Now, for much of the remainder of the chapter,

  130. that whole account is repeated

  131. as Rebecca's brother, Laban,

  132. wants to know all about what's happened.

  133. And the servant goes through

  134. all the different things that had happened.

  135. And so we pick it up in verse 61.

  136. By now, everyone's come to the conclusion

  137. that Isaac and Rebecca should get married.

  138. It's a good idea.

  139. Verse 61.

  140. Then Rebecca and her attendants got ready

  141. and mounted the camels

  142. and went back with the man.

  143. So the servant took Rebecca and left.

  144. Now Isaac had come from Be'er-Lahai, Roy,

  145. for he was living in the Negev.

  146. He went out to the field one evening to meditate,

  147. and as he looked up,

  148. he saw camels approaching.

  149. Rebecca also looked up and saw Isaac.

  150. She got down from her camel and asked the servant,

  151. Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?

  152. He is my master, the servant answered.

  153. So she took her veil and covered herself.

  154. Then the servant told Isaac all he had done.

  155. Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah,

  156. and he married Rebecca.

  157. So she became his wife,

  158. and he loved her.

  159. And Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

  160. Well, let's pray.

  161. Father, thank you for the privilege

  162. of being able to hear a story like this

  163. about real people,

  164. a real time,

  165. a long time ago,

  166. but yet a story that was written down and recorded

  167. so that we can be blessed today.

  168. And Father, that is our prayer,

  169. that as we look at your word together,

  170. as we hear your voice,

  171. that we will be blessed.

  172. and we will come to know something

  173. of your great plan

  174. of redemption,

  175. your blessings to this world.

  176. So teach us.

  177. In Jesus' name we pray.

  178. Amen.

  179. Amen.

  180. Amen.

  181. Amen.

  182. Amen.

  183. Amen.

  184. Amen.

  185. Amen.

  186. Amen.

  187. Amen.

  188. Well, at last,

  189. some romance.

  190. A beautiful love story

  191. of a young man who finds

  192. the wife of his dreams.

  193. It's a script ready

  194. for the movie makers of Hollywood,

  195. isn't it?

  196. Now, all this romance

  197. can get us thinking about

  198. weddings and funerals,

  199. or weddings and marriages, rather.

  200. In fact, last week,

  201. as we looked at Sarah,

  202. we thought about planning

  203. for our own funeral.

  204. And this week,

  205. well, it all seems to be

  206. about planning for our wedding.

  207. So what does this chapter

  208. have to teach us about

  209. finding our true spouse?

  210. Well, here's my three top tips

  211. for finding the right spouse.

  212. First of all,

  213. look for a Christian.

  214. Isn't that what Isaac had to do?

  215. Find the right kind of person.

  216. Not from the Canaanites.

  217. They were pagans.

  218. They didn't follow God.

  219. But go find the right kind of person.

  220. Find someone with the right character.

  221. Wasn't Rebecca a fine woman?

  222. Not only was she beautiful,

  223. but what a servant she was.

  224. going beyond and above duty,

  225. watering 10 camels.

  226. Somebody's worked out that

  227. taking the average size of a container

  228. to drop your water down into the well

  229. to water 10 camels

  230. would have taken 80 to 100 trips

  231. back and forth to the well.

  232. What character?

  233. And then find somebody who's committed.

  234. I mean, Rebecca was committed, wasn't she?

  235. She was ready to leave her family

  236. and go to Isaac's home.

  237. We don't want to have someone

  238. who's running back to mummy

  239. every time they're in trouble.

  240. They're to leave and be committed.

  241. So there you have it.

  242. Find your right spouse,

  243. a Christian character and committed.

  244. Sermon over.

  245. Let's pray.

  246. And we'll sing our last song.

  247. Well, maybe it's about

  248. finding our right spouse.

  249. But let's be not too quick

  250. to jump to that conclusion.

  251. Because I don't think

  252. this is about finding

  253. your perfect partner.

  254. Rather, this is actually

  255. all about God's faithfulness to us.

  256. In fact, this marriage story

  257. tells us of the greatest marriage

  258. we can all experience,

  259. the marriage of God

  260. to his people.

  261. But more of that

  262. in a little while.

  263. Let's get back to the story itself.

  264. Four things we're going to look at

  265. this morning.

  266. A marriage full of promise,

  267. a marriage designed in heaven,

  268. a marriage overflowing with blessing,

  269. and a marriage filled with purpose.

  270. So first of all,

  271. a marriage full of promise.

  272. Now before we get stuck

  273. into the detail,

  274. we need to pull back

  275. with the camera lens

  276. and remember the big story

  277. of Genesis.

  278. The big story that God

  279. has made a promise

  280. to renew this broken world

  281. and restore

  282. our disordered lives.

  283. It was a promise

  284. of redemption.

  285. And that redemption

  286. would come through

  287. the family of a man

  288. called Abraham.

  289. So in Genesis 12,

    Genesis 12:3

  290. verse 3,

  291. we read,

  292. and all people

  293. or all nations,

  294. all peoples on earth

  295. will be blessed

  296. through you.

  297. A seed of Abraham,

  298. a son would come

  299. from the line of Abraham

  300. who would deliver

  301. God's promise.

  302. A son who would bring

  303. the blessing

  304. of redemption

  305. to the world.

  306. He would come

  307. and save and rescue

  308. the peoples of the world

  309. from their sin

  310. and God's judgment.

  311. That was God's

  312. great promise.

  313. But at the start

  314. of the story,

  315. in chapter 24,

  316. we're faced with a problem.

  317. Look at verse 1.

  318. Abraham is now

  319. very old.

  320. And as we read on

  321. through the story,

  322. we realise that Isaac

  323. is not yet married.

  324. Now that's a big problem.

  325. You see,

  326. if Isaac doesn't get married,

  327. then he has no children.

  328. And no children means

  329. no future children.

  330. If there's no wedding

  331. for Isaac,

  332. then the promises

  333. all come to a stop.

  334. If there's no marriage,

  335. then all the blessings

  336. of God

  337. are going to dry up.

  338. If Isaac doesn't

  339. get a wife,

  340. then God's plan

  341. of redemption

  342. fails.

  343. Everything hinges

  344. on Isaac

  345. finding

  346. a wife.

  347. You see,

  348. this isn't about us

  349. searching for

  350. our perfect spouse.

  351. No,

  352. this is no

  353. ordinary marriage.

  354. marriage.

  355. This is a marriage

  356. which is central

  357. to God's promises

  358. and God fulfilling

  359. his promises.

  360. The promise of bringing

  361. blessing

  362. to the nations

  363. through a marriage.

  364. marriage.

  365. So first,

  366. whoops,

  367. I missed the first one,

  368. a marriage full of promise.

  369. And second,

  370. a marriage

  371. made in heaven.

  372. Now we might know

  373. the end of the story

  374. that,

  375. yes,

  376. Isaac and Rebecca

  377. do meet

  378. and they do get married.

  379. But what's important

  380. for us to see

  381. is how

  382. Isaac and Rebecca

  383. got together.

  384. In other words,

  385. we want to see

  386. how God

  387. fulfills

  388. his promise

  389. and accomplishes

  390. his plan.

  391. Now the way

  392. marriages happen

  393. today

  394. is,

  395. so I'm told anyway,

  396. you get a

  397. wedding planner.

  398. Someone who

  399. organises your day

  400. from venues,

  401. flowers

  402. and photos.

  403. Everything is

  404. planned out

  405. in detail

  406. and yes,

  407. you get an

  408. enormous bill

  409. for it all as well.

  410. But when it comes

  411. to the wedding day

  412. and the celebrations,

  413. as all the guests

  414. arrive,

  415. you might know

  416. who the wedding

  417. planner is,

  418. but it seems

  419. that everyone

  420. is doing

  421. what they're

  422. meant to be doing.

  423. It's like

  424. everyone has a job.

  425. Everything has

  426. been designed.

  427. There's a plan

  428. in operation.

  429. Well,

  430. God is clearly

  431. the wedding

  432. planner

  433. for Isaac

  434. and Rebecca.

  435. Look at the way

  436. God works out

  437. his plans

  438. and his promises.

  439. First,

  440. Abraham

  441. follows

  442. God's plan.

  443. Abraham

  444. goes about

  445. the business

  446. of looking

  447. for a wife

  448. for his son.

  449. Maybe different

  450. to our cultures

  451. today,

  452. but that was

  453. what they did

  454. then.

  455. And he calls

  456. in his chief

  457. servant

  458. and gives

  459. the command,

  460. we're going

  461. wife hunting.

  462. But he's got

  463. two conditions.

  464. Here's the first

  465. condition,

  466. verse 3.

  467. I want you

  468. to swear

  469. by the Lord,

  470. the God of heaven

  471. and the God

  472. of earth,

  473. that you will

  474. not get a wife

  475. for my son

  476. from the daughters

  477. of the Canaanites

  478. among whom

  479. I'm living.

  480. But go to my

  481. country and to

  482. my own relatives

  483. and get a wife

  484. for my son

  485. Isaac.

  486. So make sure

  487. you get the

  488. right kind

  489. of girl.

  490. Second

  491. condition,

  492. verse 6,

  493. make sure

  494. that you do

  495. not take

  496. my son back

  497. there.

  498. He's not

  499. to leave

  500. his home

  501. here and

  502. go set

  503. up home

  504. there.

  505. She's to

  506. come to

  507. him.

  508. So a wife

  509. must be

  510. found who's

  511. going to

  512. keep in

  513. God's ways

  514. and who is

  515. going to

  516. come to

  517. where Isaac

  518. lives.

  519. Now these

  520. aren't just

  521. personal opinions

  522. of Abraham.

  523. They're in

  524. line with

  525. God's

  526. promises.

  527. Verse 7,

  528. Abraham

  529. knows God's

  530. promise and so

  531. Abraham follows

  532. God's plan.

  533. He didn't

  534. know everything,

  535. he didn't

  536. know how it

  537. was all going

  538. to work out

  539. in detail,

  540. but with the

  541. little bit he

  542. had, he

  543. sought to

  544. obey what

  545. God had

  546. said.

  547. You see,

  548. life is not

  549. about telling

  550. God what

  551. my plans

  552. are and

  553. who my

  554. future spouse

  555. might look

  556. like or what

  557. they'll do

  558. and asking

  559. God for

  560. his blessing.

  561. no, it's

  562. always about

  563. us following

  564. and submitting

  565. to God's

  566. plan.

  567. So you say,

  568. well what is

  569. God's plan?

  570. Well we don't

  571. have to imagine

  572. and think up

  573. what is God's

  574. plan.

  575. God has

  576. clearly revealed

  577. his plan to

  578. us in

  579. scripture and

  580. Genesis 24

  581. is part of

  582. that big

  583. plan and as

  584. we'll see as

  585. we go through

  586. the story,

  587. how we can

  588. be part of

  589. that plan.

  590. In other

  591. words, if you

  592. want to know

  593. what God's

  594. plan is for

  595. your life,

  596. read your

  597. Bible.

  598. Get on

  599. board with

  600. what God

  601. is doing.

  602. So we

  603. follow God's

  604. plan.

  605. Second,

  606. we notice

  607. how the

  608. servant

  609. trusts God's

  610. kindness.

  611. Now the

  612. servant has

  613. travelled

  614. hundreds and

  615. hundreds of

  616. miles with

  617. his ten

  618. camels to

  619. the family

  620. home of

  621. Abraham.

  622. And he

  623. reaches his

  624. destination and

  625. he pulls

  626. into the

  627. equivalent of

  628. apple green and

  629. he gets

  630. himself a

  631. drink and

  632. ready to

  633. refuel his

  634. camels.

  635. So he's in

  636. the right

  637. place.

  638. This is where

  639. he should be.

  640. This is

  641. Abraham territory.

  642. But my

  643. goodness me,

  644. there's a lot

  645. of women here.

  646. Who's the

  647. right one?

  648. How am I

  649. going to know

  650. which is

  651. the right

  652. wife?

  653. Well he

  654. comes up

  655. with an

  656. imaginative

  657. test,

  658. doesn't

  659. he?

  660. Look at

  661. verse 14.

  662. May it

  663. be that

  664. when I

  665. say to

  666. a young

  667. woman,

  668. please let

  669. down your

  670. jar that

  671. I may

  672. have a

  673. drink,

  674. and she

  675. says,

  676. drink and

  677. I'll water

  678. your camels

  679. too.

  680. Let her

  681. be the

  682. one you

  683. have chosen

  684. for your

  685. servant

  686. Isaac.

  687. By this

  688. I will

  689. know that

  690. you have

  691. shown kindness

  692. to my

  693. master.

  694. And,

  695. whoa,

  696. look what

  697. happens,

  698. verse 17.

  699. He spies

  700. a woman,

  701. she's a

  702. beautiful

  703. woman,

  704. and he

  705. goes up

  706. to her,

  707. verse 17,

  708. the servant

  709. hurried to

  710. meet her

  711. and said,

  712. please give

  713. me a little

  714. water from

  715. your jar.

  716. What's she

  717. going to

  718. do?

  719. Drink,

  720. my lord,

  721. she said,

  722. and quickly

  723. lowered the

  724. jar to her

  725. hands and

  726. gave him a

  727. drink.

  728. But what

  729. about the

  730. camels?

  731. Oh,

  732. after she'd

  733. given him

  734. a drink,

  735. she said,

  736. I'll draw

  737. water for

  738. your camels

  739. too until

  740. they've had

  741. enough to

  742. drink.

  743. Amazing!

  744. Everything

  745. is working

  746. out.

  747. But let's

  748. remember,

  749. this is not

  750. random

  751. coincidence.

  752. This is the

  753. result of

  754. faithful

  755. dependence.

  756. Look at

  757. how the

  758. servant began

  759. his search.

  760. Verse 12.

  761. Then he

  762. prayed,

  763. Lord,

  764. God of

  765. my master

  766. Abraham,

  767. make me

  768. successful

  769. today and

  770. show kindness

  771. to my

  772. master

  773. Abraham.

  774. There's his

  775. prayer,

  776. show kindness.

  777. Now,

  778. kindness is

  779. much more

  780. than just

  781. generosity.

  782. It means

  783. God's

  784. faithful

  785. covenant

  786. love.

  787. love that

  788. is steadfastly

  789. loyal to

  790. his promises.

  791. So,

  792. as he

  793. prays,

  794. the servant

  795. is asking

  796. God to

  797. be faithful

  798. to his

  799. covenant,

  800. that God

  801. would fulfil

  802. his promises.

  803. We can

  804. almost imagine

  805. him praying

  806. as the

  807. women are

  808. at the

  809. well.

  810. Lord,

  811. I need

  812. to find a

  813. woman here

  814. and I

  815. haven't got a

  816. clue who

  817. the right

  818. one is,

  819. but I

  820. trust that

  821. as I

  822. choose,

  823. you will

  824. be faithful

  825. to your

  826. covenant.

  827. May the

  828. one I

  829. choose be

  830. according to

  831. your promise.

  832. Show this

  833. kindness.

  834. Amen.

  835. And he

  836. opens his

  837. eyes and

  838. he follows

  839. through.

  840. And so

  841. when he

  842. finds a

  843. woman who

  844. passes the

  845. test,

  846. look how

  847. he prays.

  848. Verse 26.

  849. Then the

  850. man bowed

  851. down and

  852. worshipped the

  853. Lord,

  854. saying,

  855. praise be

  856. to the

  857. Lord,

  858. the God

  859. of my

  860. master

  861. Abraham,

  862. who has

  863. not

  864. abandoned

  865. his

  866. kindness

  867. and

  868. faithfulness

  869. to my

  870. master.

  871. As for

  872. me,

  873. the Lord

  874. has led

  875. me on

  876. a journey

  877. to the

  878. house of

  879. my

  880. master's

  881. relatives.

  882. The Lord

  883. has been

  884. faithful to

  885. his covenant

  886. promises.

  887. partners.

  888. You see,

  889. the principle

  890. here is not

  891. come up with

  892. an imaginative

  893. test to

  894. find out

  895. who your

  896. future

  897. partner will

  898. be.

  899. So for a

  900. modern day

  901. application,

  902. let's swap

  903. camels for

  904. cars.

  905. So you drive

  906. to the nearest

  907. petrol station

  908. with your

  909. prospective

  910. partner and

  911. they don't

  912. know that you

  913. fancy them

  914. and all the

  915. rest of it

  916. and you say,

  917. I need some

  918. petrol.

  919. And they

  920. respond,

  921. oh, let

  922. me buy it

  923. and guess

  924. what, I'll

  925. fill up your

  926. whole tank.

  927. Ah, there's

  928. your answer,

  929. I found the

  930. right person.

  931. No, that's

  932. madness, we

  933. can't do

  934. that.

  935. This is all

  936. about trusting

  937. God's

  938. kindness.

  939. Live your

  940. life in the

  941. knowledge that

  942. God's promises

  943. are best for

  944. you.

  945. Rather than

  946. decide what

  947. we think is

  948. right, we

  949. trust what

  950. God says

  951. is right.

  952. We read

  953. his revealed

  954. will in

  955. his word

  956. and we

  957. entrust

  958. ourselves to

  959. a God who

  960. is steadfastly

  961. committed to

  962. working out

  963. his promises

  964. to us.

  965. Promises that

  966. are always

  967. good for

  968. us.

  969. So we

  970. follow God's

  971. plan and we

  972. trust God's

  973. kindness.

  974. love.

  975. And then we

  976. meet Laban,

  977. the brother

  978. who accepts

  979. God's will.

  980. Laban is

  981. like the

  982. big protective

  983. brother.

  984. Rebecca has

  985. returned home

  986. and she's got

  987. a pile of

  988. jewellery in

  989. her bags.

  990. Well, where

  991. did they come

  992. from?

  993. Oh, I met

  994. this guy, a

  995. servant, and

  996. he's looking

  997. for a wife

  998. and I think

  999. this might be

  1000. it.

  1001. I haven't

  1002. met him

  1003. yet but

  1004. it seems

  1005. pretty good.

  1006. So he's

  1007. wanting to

  1008. check out

  1009. who this

  1010. guy is and

  1011. well, is

  1012. this going

  1013. to be a

  1014. good match

  1015. for my

  1016. sister?

  1017. And he

  1018. agrees and

  1019. arranges to

  1020. take the

  1021. servant back

  1022. to his

  1023. house because

  1024. he wants

  1025. to know

  1026. the story.

  1027. Verse 33.

  1028. Then food

  1029. was set

  1030. before the

  1031. servant but

  1032. he said,

  1033. I'm not

  1034. going to

  1035. eat until

  1036. I've told

  1037. you what

  1038. I have to

  1039. say.

  1040. Well, then

  1041. tell us,

  1042. said Laban,

  1043. tell us

  1044. the story.

  1045. And the

  1046. servant then

  1047. recounts the

  1048. whole course

  1049. of events.

  1050. He tells

  1051. them all

  1052. about Abraham

  1053. sending him

  1054. off to get

  1055. a wife for

  1056. his son

  1057. Isaac,

  1058. how she

  1059. must be

  1060. from his

  1061. family,

  1062. how she

  1063. must leave

  1064. that land

  1065. and go

  1066. to be

  1067. with Isaac,

  1068. all according

  1069. to God's

  1070. promise.

  1071. He explained

  1072. how he

  1073. prayed,

  1074. how he

  1075. sought God's

  1076. help,

  1077. how he

  1078. trusted in

  1079. God's

  1080. kindness,

  1081. leaning

  1082. upon God's

  1083. promises.

  1084. And he

  1085. describes the

  1086. events at

  1087. the well,

  1088. the little

  1089. test that

  1090. he had,

  1091. how he

  1092. asked for

  1093. a drink

  1094. for the

  1095. woman,

  1096. and how

  1097. she was

  1098. to offer

  1099. water for

  1100. the camels.

  1101. And guess

  1102. what,

  1103. Laban?

  1104. She did

  1105. everything that

  1106. we required.

  1107. Now, what

  1108. would big

  1109. brother Laban

  1110. think of

  1111. such a

  1112. story?

  1113. Well, we're

  1114. told,

  1115. verse 50,

  1116. Laban,

  1117. that's the

  1118. brother,

  1119. and Bethuel,

  1120. the father

  1121. he was

  1122. in listening

  1123. to,

  1124. answered,

  1125. this is

  1126. from the

  1127. Lord.

  1128. We can

  1129. say nothing

  1130. to you

  1131. one way

  1132. or another.

  1133. Who else

  1134. could be

  1135. in it?

  1136. Here is

  1137. Rebecca,

  1138. take her

  1139. and go,

  1140. and let

  1141. her become

  1142. the wife

  1143. of your

  1144. master's

  1145. son,

  1146. as the

  1147. Lord has

  1148. directed.

  1149. There's no

  1150. debate.

  1151. They can

  1152. clearly see

  1153. God's hand

  1154. in all of

  1155. this.

  1156. They submit

  1157. themselves to

  1158. God's will,

  1159. they accept

  1160. God's will,

  1161. when they

  1162. consider God's

  1163. promises to

  1164. Abraham,

  1165. when they

  1166. think about

  1167. the servant's

  1168. prayer and

  1169. his dependence

  1170. on God's

  1171. kindness and

  1172. his covenant

  1173. faithfulness,

  1174. the circumstances

  1175. at the well,

  1176. well, put it

  1177. all together,

  1178. it makes

  1179. perfect sense.

  1180. The God

  1181. of heaven

  1182. and earth

  1183. is in

  1184. all of

  1185. this.

  1186. This is

  1187. a plan

  1188. they can

  1189. follow.

  1190. You see,

  1191. God doesn't

  1192. do coincidences

  1193. or chance

  1194. happenings.

  1195. This is not

  1196. a random

  1197. event.

  1198. No,

  1199. God is

  1200. directing

  1201. the whole

  1202. show.

  1203. Isn't that

  1204. what we see

  1205. here?

  1206. God has

  1207. made a

  1208. promise

  1209. and God

  1210. has a plan

  1211. to fulfil

  1212. that promise.

  1213. Abraham

  1214. may send

  1215. his servant,

  1216. the servant

  1217. may set

  1218. a test,

  1219. but this

  1220. is God's

  1221. plan.

  1222. This is

  1223. from the

  1224. Lord.

  1225. This has

  1226. all come

  1227. about,

  1228. end of

  1229. verse 51,

  1230. as the

  1231. Lord has

  1232. directed.

  1233. You see,

  1234. God is

  1235. the wedding

  1236. planner.

  1237. This is a

  1238. wedding made

  1239. in heaven.

  1240. love alrrr,

  1241. amen.

  1242. Now,

  1243. it's a

  1244. random

  1245. event in

  1246. the

  1247. Lord's

  1248. age and

  1249. Almighty,

  1250. everything we

  1251. experience

  1252. is all

  1253. under

  1254. God's

  1255. sovereign

  1256. will.

  1257. In fact,

  1258. this story

1259. is teaching us that God is so intricately involved with this world.

1260. He's so invested in our lives

1261. that he is working out his plan of salvation for you.

1262. His purpose for you is that you would know God's blessing.

1263. His plan is that you would experience the ultimate marriage,

1264. a marriage relationship with God.

  1265. Are you sure?

  1266. Absolutely.

  1267. Let's see.

1268. So third, a wedding overflowing with blessing.

1269. The wedding may be planned.

1270. Laban and the servant and Bethuel think this is good

1271. and they give the thumbs up.

  1272. Well, what about Rebecca?

1273. I mean, doesn't she have a say in all of this?

1274. After all, she's getting married to Isaac.

  1275. What does she think?

1276. Well, there's been a bit of discussion about things

1277. and verse 57, they said,

  1278. I know.

1279. Let's call the young woman and ask her about it.

  1280. Good thinking.

  1281. Verse 58.

1282. So they call Rebecca and ask her,

1283. will you go with this man?

  1284. Now, she doesn't go,

1285. oh, what colour are his eyes?

1286. What kind of job has he got?

  1287. Has he got money?

  1288. No, nothing like that.

1289. I will go, she said.

  1290. She's heard the story.

  1291. She's heard the story.

  1292. God's promises to Abraham.

1293. God's kindness to the servant.

  1294. She's heard her brother's response.

  1295. It all makes sense.

1296. This is the Lord's will.

1297. This is of the Lord.

1298. You see, Rebecca isn't just committing herself in marriage to Isaac.

1299. That's part of the story.

1300. But the big story in all of this is,

1301. Rebecca trusting God's promises and kindness.

1302. By saying, I will go,

  1303. Rebecca is entrusting herself,

1304. not just to her new husband,

  1305. but to God.

1306. By saying yes to all of this,

1307. Rebecca isn't just sharing in Isaac's wealth,

1308. she is sharing in the promised blessings of God.

  1309. Remember, it's through Isaac

1310. that the blessings are going to come.

1311. So Rebecca's yes to the marriage

1312. is Rebecca saying yes to God.

  1313. I will go.

1314. It's an act of faith.

1315. She doesn't know the future,

1316. but she has God's promise and God's blessing

1317. and she's going to leave behind her life,

  1318. her family,

1319. and step out and entrust herself

1320. to the God of redemption and blessing.

1321. But it's not just Rebecca who gets blessed.

1322. And it's not just Rebecca who gets called

1323. to share in the blessing.

1324. God's plan of salvation, remember,

1325. is that all the nations would be blessed.

1326. That all people would get to share

1327. in what God has to give.

1328. And as we read through Scripture,

1329. we see God's heart for the nations.

  1330. And the big theme,

1331. the big picture we see of this is

  1332. God as the husband

  1333. pursuing us, his people,

  1334. as his bride.

1335. Listen to what God says.

1336. You might remember these words from Hosea.

1337. You can follow on the screen.

1338. This is what God says.

1339. In that day, declares the Lord,

1340. you will call me my husband.

1341. You will no longer call me my master.

1342. I will betroth you to me forever.

1343. I will betroth you in righteousness and justice,

  1344. in love and compassion.

1345. I will betroth you in faithfulness

1346. and you will acknowledge the Lord.

1347. I will show my love to the one I called,

  1348. not my loved one.

1349. I will say to those called,

  1350. not my people,

  1351. you are my people.

  1352. And they will say,

  1353. you are my God.

  1354. You see,

  1355. this is God's plan.

1356. This is God's love for the world,

1357. his love for the nation.

1358. God has accomplished his plan

1359. and he has done that in love

1360. by sending the person of his son,

  1361. Jesus.

1362. And he's demonstrated this love

1363. and compassion by giving his life for us,

  1364. by taking our sin,

1365. the curse of judgment on himself,

1366. so that we might enjoy the wealth

  1367. of his blessing.

1368. God's plan to bless the nations,

1369. which means we are blessed.

1370. You want to know how much God loves you?

1371. How much God is committed to you?

  1372. He's saying,

1373. look at my faithful promises.

1374. Look at what I've accomplished.

  1375. Look at the cross.

1376. Even though you've rejected me

1377. and turned your back on me,

  1378. and wandered away,

  1379. I have come

  1380. to win you back

1381. so that you might be one with me,

1382. that we might be married.

  1383. This is God's plan.

1384. He is pursuing the nations in love.

1385. To those not yet belonging to me,

  1386. he says,

1387. I will be your faithful, loyal husband

1388. and I'm not going to fail you,

1389. but I'm going to bless you.

1390. God, who is kind and compassionate,

1391. stands before each one of us today

1392. and is asking for our hand in marriage.

  1393. And like Rebecca,

1394. we are called to step out in faith

  1395. and say,

  1396. I will go.

  1397. So fourth,

1398. a marriage filled with purpose.

1399. You see, when we say yes to God,

  1400. when we say,

  1401. I will go,

  1402. I will follow you,

  1403. we're committing ourselves

1404. to serving God's great purposes.

  1405. You see,

1406. the way in which God is going to bring blessing

  1407. to the nations

  1408. is through his people,

1409. through people like you and I.

  1410. So,

1411. two things for us to think about

  1412. as we finish.

1413. This means that your life

  1414. has purpose.

1415. God is now calling you

  1416. to share

  1417. his story of redemption,

1418. to declare the good news

  1419. of God's ultimate marriage.

  1420. Like Abraham,

1421. we are to follow God's plan.

  1422. Like the servant,

1423. we are to trust in God's kindness,

1424. that he will be faithful

  1425. to his promises.

1426. And we can step out

  1427. with confidence and assurance,

  1428. knowing that God

  1429. is directing all things.

1430. He is the planner of our life.

  1431. He is the planner

  1432. of every situation.

1433. Because there are no coincidences.

1434. Think about your own life.

  1435. It is all according

1436. to his design and purpose.

  1437. Where you live

1438. and the people next door to you

  1439. is not an accident.

1440. The people you meet each day

1441. when you are out walking the dogs

1442. or when you go to work

  1443. is not random.

1444. The family that you have been born

1445. into is not by chance.

1446. You might be the only Christian

1447. in each of those contexts.

  1448. It may be difficult.

  1449. But remember,

  1450. God has you

1451. where you are meant to be

1452. so that you can be

  1453. a conduit

  1454. of God's blessing

  1455. to those around you.

  1456. This is God's purpose

  1457. for your life.

1458. Bringing the blessing of God

  1459. to the nations.

  1460. That's the big plan.

  1461. It really doesn't matter

1462. what college you go to

1463. or what job you take up.

  1464. It's whatever you're doing,

  1465. see that the purpose

  1466. of your life

  1467. in that context

1468. is to bring the blessing

1469. of God to the nations.

  1470. And also it means

  1471. if you are married

1472. or you plan on being married

  1473. that your marriage

  1474. has a purpose.

  1475. This might not be

  1476. an account about

  1477. how to find

  1478. your future spouse

  1479. but it does reveal

  1480. to us something

  1481. of the purpose

  1482. of marriage.

  1483. Look,

  1484. when Isaac and Rebecca

  1485. got married,

  1486. they weren't just

  1487. committing themselves

  1488. to one another,

  1489. they were serving

  1490. the grand big purposes

  1491. of God.

  1492. You see,

  1493. marriage isn't about

  1494. satisfying your need

  1495. or fulfilling your desire

1496. and if that's your view

  1497. of marriage,

  1498. you're heading

  1499. for a train wreck.

  1500. God's design

  1501. for marriage

  1502. is that we partner

  1503. together

  1504. to serve

  1505. the greater

  1506. and bigger purposes

  1507. of God.

  1508. It's not about

  1509. me and my spouse

1510. or me and my children

  1511. hiving away

1512. and doing our own thing.

  1513. It's about husband

  1514. and wife

  1515. partnering together

  1516. in God's mission.

1517. Now maybe some of us

  1518. need to remember that

  1519. and recommit to that.

  1520. Somehow in the

  1521. busyness of life,

1522. the pressure to take on

  1523. more into our lives

  1524. or invest more

  1525. into the lives

  1526. of our kids

  1527. running here,

  1528. there and everywhere,

  1529. means that we've

  1530. lost sight

  1531. of what marriage

  1532. is all about.

  1533. Whatever our status

  1534. here today,

  1535. whether we're married

  1536. or unmarried,

  1537. whether we would love

  1538. a husband

  1539. or a wife,

  1540. let's just take

  1541. the bigger step back

  1542. and remember that

  1543. God is the wedding

  1544. planner

  1545. who is working out

  1546. his plan of redemption

  1547. through us.

  1548. So trust

  1549. God's kindness.

  1550. Follow God's

  1551. plan.

  1552. The Lord

  1553. is directing

  1554. your life

  1555. so we can go

  1556. with confidence

  1557. and assurance,

  1558. being a conduit

  1559. of God's blessing

  1560. to all we meet.

  1561. Let's pray.

  1562. Father God,

  1563. we thank you

  1564. for this

  1565. marriage account

  1566. of Isaac

  1567. and Rebecca.

1568. thank you for the way

  1569. in which it points

  1570. us

  1571. to the ultimate

  1572. marriage

  1573. with you,

  1574. Father God.

  1575. We pray

  1576. that we would

  1577. take from this

  1578. all that we need

  1579. that we might

  1580. become the people

  1581. you call us

  1582. to be.

  1583. Help us to live

  1584. our life

  1585. trusting you,

  1586. following your

  1587. revealed plan

  1588. in Scripture

  1589. and walking

  1590. confidently

  1591. as you direct

  1592. every one of our

  1593. steps.

  1594. In Jesus' name.

  1595. Amen.

  1596. Amen.

  1597. Amen.

  1598. Amen.

  1599. Amen.

  1600. Amen.

  1601. Amen.

  1602. Amen.

  1603. Amen.

  1604. Amen.

  1605. Amen.

  1606. Amen.

  1607. Amen.

  1608. Amen.

  1609. Amen.

  1610. Amen.

  1611. Amen.

  1612. Amen.
