  1. Tables please to Genesis chapter 25.

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  2. Genesis chapter 25.

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  3. We're working our way through Genesis.

  4. It's foundational, not just because it's the first book,

  5. but it sets the theme for many of the plots that we come across in the Bible story.

  6. And one of the great characters is Abraham.

  7. And we see there even on the heading of chapter 25, Abraham has died.

  8. And so the focus of the story now comes to Isaac and to his family.

  9. So we're going to read a little bit about their family this morning

  10. and what we can learn from them.

  11. So Genesis chapter 25, starting at verse 19 through to the end of the chapter.

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  12. This is the account of the family line of Abraham's son, Isaac.

  13. Abraham became the father of Isaac,

  14. and Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah,

  15. daughter of Bethuel of the Aramean from Paddan Amram,

  16. and sister of Laban the Aramean.

  17. Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife,

  18. because she was childless.

  19. The Lord answered his prayer,

  20. and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.

  21. The babies jostled each other within her,

  22. and she said,

  23. why is this happening to me?

  24. So she went to inquire of the Lord.

  25. The Lord said to her,

  26. two nations are in your womb,

  27. and two peoples from within you will be separated.

  28. One people will be stronger than the older,

  29. and the elder will serve the younger.

  30. When the time came for her to give birth,

  31. there were twin boys in her womb.

  32. The first to come out was red,

  33. and his whole body was like a hairy garment.

  34. So they named him Esau.

  35. After this, his brother came out,

  36. with his hand grasping Esau's heel.

  37. So he was named Jacob.

  38. Isaac was 60 years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

  39. The boys grew up,

  40. and Esau became a skilful hunter,

  41. a man of the open country,

  42. while Jacob was a content to stay at home among the tents.

  43. Isaac, who had a taste for wild game,

  44. loved Esau.

  45. But Rebekah loved Jacob.

  46. Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,

  47. Esau came in from the open country famished.

  48. He said to Jacob,

  49. quick, let me have some of that red stew.

  50. I'm famished.

  51. That is why he's also called Edom.

  52. Edom means red.

  53. Jacob replied,

  54. first sell me your birthright.

  55. So look, I'm about to die,

  56. Esau said.

  57. What good is the birthright to me?

  58. But Jacob said,

  59. swear to me first.

  60. So he swore an oath to him,

  61. selling his birthright to Jacob.

  62. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.

  63. He ate and drank,

  64. and then got up and left.

  65. So Esau despised his birthright.

  66. Well, keep your Bibles open there,

  67. and we're going to pray,

  68. and we pray to ask God to help us to learn from his words.

  69. So let's do that now.

  70. Father, thank you for families.

  71. Thank you for the family of this church.

  72. We gather together because we want to learn from you.

  73. We want to hear from you.

  74. So as we focus our attention on this ancient family of Isaac and Rebecca,

  75. would you teach us through it?

  76. Would you teach us more about yourself,

  77. about us,

  78. and how we should respond?

  79. Father, bless us, we pray,

  80. in Jesus' name.

  81. Amen.

  82. Well, I'm sure you all know the Simpsons,

  83. those little yellow characters on the TV program.

  84. They're a bit of a dysfunctional family, aren't they?

  85. They're always fighting and falling out.

  86. Next door to the Simpsons lives the Flanders.

  87. He's the local pastor

  88. with his well-behaved children,

  89. a model of perfection.

  90. Well, if Isaac and Rebecca had a surname,

  91. I don't know what it was, by the way,

  92. but if they did have a surname,

  93. it wouldn't be Flanders.

  94. It would be the Simpsons.

  95. They're quite the family, aren't they?

  96. Not the happiest or peaceful of homes.

  97. There's tension between the brothers

  98. as they squabble and fight.

  99. There's division between the parents.

  100. Isaac loves Esau,

  101. but Rebecca loves Jacob.

  102. And then there's this whole deception

  103. as the birthright is sold off

  104. for a bowl of stew.

  105. Now, what should get our attention here

  106. is not just how dysfunctional they are,

  107. but how central they are

  108. to God's plan of salvation.

  109. God had made a promise

  110. that through the family of Abraham,

  111. a son would come

  112. who would bring redemption to the world,

  113. a son who was going to bring blessing

  114. to all the nations.

  115. So as Abraham dies,

  116. we're introduced to Isaac

  117. and his family.

  118. Verse 19,

  119. this is the account of the family line

  120. of Abraham's son Isaac.

  121. Abraham became the father of Isaac

  122. and Isaac was 40 years old

  123. when he married Rebecca.

  124. Now,

  125. they're not the kind of family

  126. that we might choose

  127. to carry forward God's plan of salvation.

  128. But as we're going to see,

  129. we're shocked,

  130. we're surprised

  131. at the way in which God works.

  132. This isn't our plan

  133. and God doesn't do things our way.

  134. There's much that we can learn

  135. about God through this feuding family.

  136. We're going to look at three things,

  137. our struggle with God,

  138. our surprise with God,

  139. and our shock with God.

  140. So first,

  141. let's look at our struggle

  142. with God's ways.

  143. Our struggle with God's ways.

  144. Isaac marries Rebecca

  145. and everything seems in order.

  146. But,

  147. verse 21,

  148. Isaac prayed to the Lord

  149. on behalf of his wife

  150. because she was childless.

  151. Now,

  152. for many couples,

  153. those words are especially painful.

  154. Isaac and Rebecca

  155. longed to hear

  156. the pitter-patter of tiny feet.

  157. To hear a little one

  158. call out,

  159. Mum,

  160. Dad.

  161. And for those who face this reality,

  162. and there are many,

  163. it's heartbreaking.

  164. We struggle because

  165. this is what we so desperately want.

  166. After all,

  167. it's central to married life.

  168. It's about building your family.

  169. And for Isaac and Rebecca,

  170. well,

  171. they are childless.

  172. not only that,

  173. for Isaac and Rebecca,

  174. this was a double struggle.

  175. Remaining childless meant

  176. that the promise

  177. was in doubt.

  178. Remember,

  179. it's through the family line of Abraham

  180. that God's blessing of salvation

  181. would come to the world.

  182. So,

  183. if Isaac and Rebecca

  184. have no children,

  185. then there's no blessing.

  186. And if they have no son,

  187. then there's no redemption.

  188. And if we do our maths correctly,

  189. it's been going on for 20 years.

  190. Verse 20 tells us

  191. that Isaac was 40

  192. when he got married.

  193. Verse 26 tells us

  194. that he was 60

  195. when the two boys were born.

  196. So,

  197. 20 years

  198. of struggle.

  199. Not just pain

  200. within the family,

  201. but doubting God's goodness,

  202. questioning God's plan.

  203. You see,

  204. when things don't go

  205. as we expect,

  206. we struggle.

  207. Maybe you plan

  208. for a family

  209. and it doesn't quite work out

  210. the way you expect.

  211. Does God not love me?

  212. Perhaps you lose

  213. a close friend

  214. early in life

  215. and we're left wondering,

  216. does God not care

  217. about me?

  218. You see,

  219. we all have our plans

  220. for our life,

  221. don't we?

  222. Each one of us here,

  223. we could write it down

  224. on a piece of paper.

  225. Our dreams,

  226. our expectations,

  227. and we have it all

  228. mapped out

  229. from an early age.

  230. I'm going to go to college,

  231. I'm going to study

  232. this course,

  233. then I'm going to travel

  234. for a bit

  235. and then I'm going to find

  236. a partner,

  237. a husband,

  238. or a wife

  239. and we're going to work

  240. for three and a half years

  241. and then we'll have enough

  242. for our mortgage

  243. and we're going to buy

  244. our house

  245. and then we're going to have

  246. our 2.7 children

  247. and then we're going

  248. to retire

  249. and then I'm going

  250. to be able to do

  251. everything I wanted to do

  252. and go on all these

  253. lovely sun holidays

  254. and...

  255. Well, life rarely goes

  256. according to our plans.

  257. Health issues arise,

  258. an unforeseen move,

  259. a loss of income

  260. and we sit down

  261. and we ask God,

  262. what is he doing?

  263. Can I trust God

  264. with my life?

  265. Well, it would be stupid

  266. of me to pretend

  267. there's answers

  268. to all of these questions.

  269. I certainly don't have them.

  270. But what God calls us

  271. to do in our struggle

  272. is to turn it all

  273. into prayer.

  274. We cry out to him

  275. because that's exactly

  276. what Isaac and Rebecca do.

  277. Verse 21,

  278. Isaac prayed

  279. to the Lord

  280. on behalf of his wife

  281. because she was childless.

  282. The Lord answered his prayer

  283. and his wife, Rebecca,

  284. became pregnant.

  285. Now, let's be clear here.

  286. This does not mean

  287. God will give us

  288. everything that we ask for.

  289. This isn't a quick fix solution

  290. to all our wants

  291. and desires.

  292. Remember,

  293. Isaac and Rebecca

  294. had a central

  295. and unique role

  296. in God's plan

  297. of salvation.

  298. Through the family

  299. would come a son

  300. who was going to bring

  301. salvation to the world.

  302. So they begin to pray

  303. according to God's promise.

  304. We're not told

  305. what Isaac prayed,

  306. but we can picture him there

  307. as he puts his arms

  308. around his wife

  309. to console her

  310. and as they kneel

  311. before God

  312. morning, noon and night

  313. and they cry out to him,

  314. Lord,

  315. you've promised

  316. to bless the nations.

  317. You've promised

  318. that a son will come.

  319. Please, God,

  320. fulfill your promise.

  321. In our struggle,

  322. keep us faithful.

  323. In our doubt,

  324. keep us trusting.

  325. Please sustain us.

  326. Amen.

  327. Well, God has made

  328. many promises

  329. to us,

  330. his redeemed people.

  331. In our struggles,

  332. God has promised us

  333. that

  334. my grace

  335. is sufficient

  336. for you.

  337. In our doubts,

  338. God has promised

  339. that nothing

  340. can separate us

  341. from the love

  342. of God.

  343. in our fears,

  344. God has promised

  345. to care for you

  346. and to uphold you.

  347. You see,

  348. here is encouragement

  349. for every one of us

  350. in every struggle

  351. that we go through.

  352. Here are promises

  353. that we can take

  354. and we can pray them

  355. back to God

  356. knowing that he will

  357. deliver on his promise.

  358. Prayer like this

  359. will sustain you.

  360. We can cry out to him

  361. Lord,

  362. as you have promised,

  363. give me your grace.

  364. Strengthen my faith.

  365. Supply my need.

  366. Pick me up

  367. when I fall.

  368. Fill me

  369. with peace.

  370. Prayers like that

  371. will sustain you

  372. in your struggle.

  373. So first,

  374. our struggle

  375. with God's ways.

  376. Not only is there

  377. a struggle,

  378. but there is also

  379. a surprise

  380. at God's choice.

  381. Surprise.

  382. So Rebecca and Isaac

  383. gather together,

  384. they pray,

  385. and God,

  386. according to his timing

  387. and in his will,

  388. provides them

  389. with children.

  390. She becomes pregnant.

  391. And there is a surprise

  392. with the pregnancy.

  393. Not that there are two

  394. instead of one,

  395. but what is going on

  396. between the two boys?

  397. Look at verse 22.

  398. The babies

  399. jostled with each other

  400. within her.

  401. Now,

  402. I've never had

  403. the privilege

  404. or the experience

  405. of being pregnant,

  406. but I know

  407. babies kick

  408. and move

  409. and punch

  410. and do all kinds

  411. of things

  412. inside the womb.

  413. But this is

  414. something different.

  415. It's like a wrestling

  416. match is going on

  417. inside Rebecca.

  418. What are we to make

  419. of this

  420. surprising pregnancy?

  421. Well,

  422. two things.

  423. Let's read again

  424. from verse 22.

  425. The babies

  426. jostled with each other

  427. and she said,

  428. she cries out,

  429. why is this

  430. happening to me?

  431. What's going on?

  432. What's the meaning?

  433. And the Lord

  434. said to her,

  435. two nations

  436. are in your womb

  437. and two peoples

  438. are within you

  439. and they will be

  440. separated.

  441. one people

  442. will be stronger

  443. than the other

  444. and the elder

  445. will serve

  446. the younger.

  447. Well,

  448. what are we to make

  449. of all of this?

  450. Well,

  451. first it teaches us

  452. about God's

  453. gracious

  454. choice.

  455. Do you see

  456. the end of verse 23?

  457. the elder

  458. will serve

  459. the younger.

  460. Well,

  461. that's not

  462. the way

  463. things are

  464. meant to go.

  465. The tradition

  466. was that

  467. the older,

  468. the first son,

  469. was always

  470. given priority.

  471. The older

  472. is always

  473. chosen first.

  474. They're the

  475. firstborn.

  476. They're the one

  477. who gets

  478. the inheritance.

  479. They're the ones

  480. that get

  481. the blessing.

  482. It's just

  483. the way

  484. it is.

  485. Well,

  486. guess what?

  487. God doesn't

  488. do tradition.

  489. God doesn't

  490. follow social

  491. norms.

  492. In fact,

  493. God does

  494. things his

  495. way,

  496. not our

  497. way.

  498. God chooses

  499. the younger

  500. one over

  501. the older

  502. one.

  503. Well,

  504. you say,

  505. well,

  506. there must be

  507. a reason for

  508. that.

  509. It must be

  510. because the

  511. older one

  512. later in

  513. life,

  514. he must

  515. become the

  516. baddie,

  517. and,

  518. well,

  519. the younger

  520. one,

  521. he must

  522. be the

  523. goodie.

  524. The older

  525. one must

  526. be kind

  527. of a

  528. Simpson

  529. type,

  530. and the

  531. younger

  532. one turns

  533. out to

  534. be a

  535. Flander,

  536. a good

  537. guy.

  538. That's

  539. how it

  540. works,

  541. right?

  542. Well,

  543. not so

  544. fast.

  545. God works

  546. by his

  547. grace.

  548. The New

  549. Testament

  550. actually

  551. interprets

  552. this

  553. verse

  554. for us

  555. in

  556. Romans

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  557. chapter

  558. 11.

  559. I have

  560. it on

  561. the

  562. screen

  563. here.

  564. You can

  565. follow

  566. with me.

  567. It says,

  568. Rebecca's

  569. children were

  570. conceived

  571. at the

  572. same

  573. time

  574. by our

  575. father

  576. Isaac.

  577. So,

  578. the two

  579. boys have

  580. the same

  581. father,

  582. no problem

  583. there.

  584. Yet,

  585. before the

  586. twins were

  587. born,

  588. or had

  589. done any

  590. good or

  591. bad,

  592. in order

  593. that God's

  594. purpose in

  595. election might

  596. stand,

  597. or according

  598. to his

  599. gracious

  600. choice,

  601. not by

  602. works,

  603. but by

  604. him who

  605. calls,

  606. she was

  607. told,

  608. the older

  609. will serve

  610. the younger.

  611. You see,

  612. God's choice

  613. had nothing

  614. to do

  615. with what

  616. Esau and

  617. Jacob were

  618. like.

  619. God

  620. didn't

  621. make his

  622. choice

  623. based on

  624. how they

  625. would

  626. live,

  627. how they

  628. would

  629. turn out.

  630. Now,

  631. look what

  632. it says,

  633. before

  634. the twins

  635. were born,

  636. before they

  637. had done

  638. any good

  639. or bad.

  640. In other

  641. words,

  642. it was

  643. all by

  644. God's

  645. gracious

  646. intervention,

  647. and God's

  648. gracious

  649. choice.

  650. And it

  651. wasn't the

  652. kind of

  653. eeny,

  654. meeny,

  655. miny,

  656. moe,

  657. I'll

  658. just

  659. pick a

  660. name out

  661. of the

  662. hat and

  663. see which

  664. one comes

  665. out.

  666. No,

  667. God's

  668. choice of

  669. Jacob to

  670. receive the

  671. blessing lies

  672. with God

  673. and his

  674. purposes,

  675. and it

  676. has nothing

  677. to do

  678. with Jacob.

  679. It's God

  680. who calls

  681. us according

  682. to his

  683. purpose,

  684. and it's

  685. all by

  686. his

  687. grace.

  688. God's

  689. choice.

  690. In fact,

  691. there's

  692. another

  693. surprise.

  694. Not only

  695. is it

  696. God's

  697. gracious

  698. choice,

  699. but it

  700. seems that

  701. God's

  702. choice is

  703. for sinners.

  704. God

  705. chooses

  706. those who

  707. are sinful.

  708. Look how

  709. these two

  710. brothers are

  711. contrasted.

  712. Look at

  713. verse 25.

  714. The first

  715. to be

  716. born came

  717. out red,

  718. and his

  719. whole body

  720. was like a

  721. hairy garment.

  722. I kind of

  723. read that and

  724. think, did he

  725. come out like a

  726. monkey or

  727. something or

  728. what?

  729. No, I

  730. just think he

  731. had lots of

  732. hair, like

  733. some kids

  734. when they're

  735. born just

  736. have a big

  737. head of

  738. hair, don't

  739. they?

  740. And we

  741. might say

  742. they're a

  743. healthy one,

  744. a healthy,

  745. full of

  746. strength and

  747. vitality.

  748. So his

  749. name was

  750. given Esau,

  751. which means

  752. hairy.

  753. It's pretty

  754. obvious, isn't

  755. it?

  756. After this,

  757. verse 26,

  758. his brother

  759. came out,

  760. and his

  761. hand was,

  762. well, it

  763. just wasn't

  764. normal.

  765. He was

  766. grasping,

  767. catching a

  768. hold of

  769. Esau's

  770. heels, so

  771. he was

  772. named

  773. Jacob.

  774. What's this

  775. unusual

  776. grasping all

  777. about?

  778. Well, you

  779. might have

  780. a little

  781. note at

  782. the bottom

  783. of your

  784. Bible.

  785. It tells

  786. us that,

  787. well, Jacob

  788. means deceives.

  789. He's a

  790. grabber.

  791. In fact, as

  792. we walk

  793. through the

  794. passages in

  795. Genesis and

  796. get to know

  797. Jacob a little

  798. bit more,

  799. his whole

  800. life is a

  801. broken mess.

  802. As the

  803. years go

  804. by, it

  805. seems he

  806. gets worse.

  807. He's really

  808. not a very

  809. nice guy.

  810. You wouldn't

  811. want him to

  812. be in your

  813. social networks.

  814. God

  815. but yet,

  816. this is

  817. the son.

  818. This is

  819. the one

  820. that God

  821. chooses to

  822. receive the

  823. promised blessing.

  824. Now, I

  825. don't know

  826. about you,

  827. but that

  828. gets my

  829. back up.

  830. It annoys

  831. me.

  832. People like

  833. that should

  834. be cursed,

  835. not blessed.

  836. Good people

  837. should be

  838. honoured,

  839. and bad

  840. people should

  841. be punished.

  842. doesn't God

  843. surprise you?

  844. He takes

  845. the youngest

  846. and the

  847. weakest.

  848. He takes

  849. the one

  850. with no

  851. strength and

  852. no status

  853. and blesses

  854. them.

  855. God chooses

  856. sinners.

  857. But yet,

  858. we shouldn't

  859. be surprised

  860. because that's

  861. the big

  862. message of

  863. all of

  864. scripture.

  865. Go with

  866. me.

  867. Keep your

  868. finger in

  869. Genesis 25

  870. and jump

  871. forward to

  872. 1 Corinthians.

  873. It's on

  874. page 1145.

  875. Page 1145.

  876. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  877. chapter 1

  878. and we

  879. pick it

  880. up in

  881. verse 26.

  882. Here Paul

  883. is writing

  884. to a

  885. church,

  886. just like

  887. us,

  888. ordinary

  889. people,

  890. and he

  891. reminds them

  892. of why

  893. God called

  894. them,

  895. why God

  896. saved

  897. them.

  898. Chapter

  899. 1,

  900. verse 26.

  901. Brothers

  902. and sisters,

  903. think of

  904. what you

  905. were when

  906. you were

  907. called,

  908. when God

  909. intervened

  910. and saved

  911. you.

  912. Not many

  913. of you

  914. were wise

  915. by human

  916. standards.

  917. Not many

  918. were influential.

  919. Not many

  920. were of

  921. noble birth.

  922. But God

  923. chose the

  924. foolish things

  925. of the world

  926. to shame

  927. the wise.

  928. God chose

  929. the weak

  930. things of

  931. the world

  932. to shame

  933. the strong.

  934. God chose

  935. the lowly

  936. things of

  937. the world

  938. and the

  939. despised

  940. things and

  941. the things

  942. that are

  943. not,

  944. to nullify

  945. the things

  946. that are,

  947. so that

  948. no one

  949. may boast

  950. before him.

  951. It is

  952. because of

  953. him

  954. that you

  955. are in

  956. Christ Jesus.

  957. If you've

  958. got a

  959. highlighter,

  960. highlight that,

  961. verse 30.

  962. it is

  963. because of

  964. him,

  965. not you,

  966. because of

  967. him

  968. that you

  969. are in

  970. Christ Jesus.

  971. Let's go

  972. back to

  973. Genesis 25.

  974. You see,

  975. it's because

  976. of God's

  977. gracious

  978. choice

  979. and love

  980. and kindness

  981. towards sinners

  982. that any

  983. of us

  984. have any

  985. hope at

  986. all.

  987. You see,

  988. God has

  989. no favourites

  990. and neither

  991. should we.

  992. The problem

  993. is we do

  994. treat each

  995. other differently.

  996. We treat

  997. each other

  998. differently

  999. within the

  1000. family of

  1001. the church.

  1002. Or perhaps

  1003. even like

  1004. Isaac and

  1005. Rebecca,

  1006. parents

  1007. treat their

  1008. children

  1009. differently.

  1010. Look at

  1011. verse 27.

  1012. The boys

  1013. grew up.

  1014. Esau

  1015. became a

  1016. skillful

  1017. hunter,

  1018. a man of

  1019. the open

  1020. country.

  1021. Kind of

  1022. the rough

  1023. and tumble

  1024. kind of

  1025. guy.

  1026. While

  1027. Jacob was

  1028. content to

  1029. stay at

  1030. home among

  1031. the tents,

  1032. Isaac,

  1033. who had

  1034. a taste

  1035. for wild

  1036. game,

  1037. oh,

  1038. he loved

  1039. Esau.

  1040. But

  1041. Rebecca,

  1042. no,

  1043. she loved

  1044. Jacob.

  1045. You see,

  1046. they each

  1047. had their

  1048. blind spots.

  1049. Isaac

  1050. loved the

  1051. country boy.

  1052. Rebecca

  1053. loved the

  1054. home boy.

  1055. They had

  1056. their

  1057. favourites

  1058. which only

  1059. fuelled

  1060. the family

  1061. division.

  1062. You see,

  1063. if Isaac

  1064. and Rebecca

  1065. had just

  1066. grasped and

  1067. taken a

  1068. little bit

  1069. of time

  1070. to understand

  1071. God's

  1072. amazing grace

  1073. towards them,

  1074. they would

  1075. have no

  1076. favourites.

  1077. They would

  1078. love their

  1079. children,

  1080. all of them,

  1081. equally.

  1082. And we

  1083. would have

  1084. no favourites

  1085. either.

  1086. So,

  1087. parents,

  1088. if you

  1089. have

  1090. children,

  1091. please be

  1092. very,

  1093. very careful

  1094. of this.

  1095. Your

  1096. favouritism

  1097. can destroy

  1098. your relationship

  1099. with your

  1100. children

  1101. and can

  1102. wreck

  1103. your family.

  1104. Instead,

  1105. let us

  1106. all step

  1107. back and

  1108. immerse

  1109. ourselves

  1110. afresh

  1111. in God's

  1112. grace

  1113. and understand

  1114. that he

  1115. loves you

  1116. in all

  1117. your mess,

  1118. in all

  1119. your

  1120. brokenness

  1121. and with

  1122. all of

  1123. your sin

  1124. and he

  1125. loves you.

  1126. And so

  1127. we should

  1128. love all

  1129. the family

  1130. equally,

  1131. no

  1132. favourites.

  1133. So,

  1134. our

  1135. struggle

  1136. with God's

  1137. ways,

  1138. our

  1139. surprise

  1140. at God's

  1141. choice

  1142. and

  1143. then

  1144. our

  1145. shock

  1146. over

  1147. God's

  1148. response.

  1149. Fast

  1150. forward

  1151. 20 years,

  1152. it seems

  1153. just a

  1154. normal day.

  1155. Esau has

  1156. been out

  1157. hunting and

  1158. is hungry.

  1159. Jacob

  1160. has been

  1161. at home

  1162. and he's

  1163. been cooking

  1164. in the

  1165. kitchen.

  1166. But what

  1167. follows is

  1168. something

  1169. quite

  1170. shocking.

  1171. First,

  1172. we see

  1173. just how

  1174. desperate

  1175. these

  1176. brothers

  1177. are.

  1178. Their

  1179. hearts

  1180. are exposed

  1181. before us.

  1182. Verse

  1183. 30,

  1184. Esau

  1185. has come

  1186. in and he

  1187. says to his

  1188. brother Jacob,

  1189. quick,

  1190. let me have

  1191. some of that

  1192. red stew.

  1193. I'm

  1194. famished.

  1195. Well,

  1196. Jacob being

  1197. Jacob sees

  1198. the opportunity,

  1199. doesn't he?

  1200. Verse 31,

  1201. first sell

  1202. me your

  1203. birthright.

  1204. Well,

  1205. look,

  1206. I'm about

  1207. to die,

  1208. Esau said.

  1209. What good

  1210. is the

  1211. birthright

  1212. to me?

  1213. I'm

  1214. starving.

  1215. I've been

  1216. out all

  1217. day and

  1218. if I

  1219. don't get

  1220. some of

  1221. that stew,

  1222. I'm going

  1223. to pass

  1224. out here,

  1225. I'm going

  1226. to die.

  1227. What good

  1228. is the

  1229. birthright

  1230. going to

  1231. me then?

  1232. You can

  1233. have it.

  1234. Just give

  1235. me some

  1236. of your

  1237. stew.

  1238. Well,

  1239. of course,

  1240. Esau

  1241. wouldn't

  1242. have

  1243. died.

  1244. We all

  1245. know what

  1246. it's like

  1247. to listen

  1248. to kids

  1249. or even

  1250. ourselves

  1251. come in.

  1252. I'm

  1253. starving.

  1254. I'm

  1255. going to

  1256. die if

  1257. I don't

  1258. have

  1259. something

  1260. to eat.

  1261. No,

  1262. he wasn't

  1263. going to

  1264. die.

  1265. He was

  1266. hungry.

  1267. He

  1268. wasn't

  1269. on death's

  1270. door.

  1271. He was

  1272. just

  1273. desperate

  1274. for

  1275. something

  1276. to

  1277. eat.

  1278. And

  1279. Jacob

  1280. senses

  1281. the

  1282. weakness

  1283. and he

  1284. closes

  1285. in.

  1286. Verse

  1287. 33,

  1288. Jacob

  1289. said,

  1290. swear

  1291. to me

  1292. first.

  1293. Let's

  1294. make a

  1295. deal.

  1296. Let's

  1297. make this

  1298. legal.

  1299. Let's

  1300. sign on

  1301. the dotted

  1302. line.

  1303. So Esau

  1304. swore an

  1305. oath to

  1306. him,

  1307. selling his

  1308. birthright

  1309. to Jacob.

  1310. Well,

  1311. I'm sure

  1312. Jacob could

  1313. hardly believe

  1314. his luck.

  1315. I mean,

  1316. it didn't

  1317. take much

  1318. persuasion.

  1319. Just a bit

  1320. of his lentil

  1321. stew was

  1322. enough to

  1323. get him

  1324. over the

  1325. line.

  1326. seems

  1327. Esau

  1328. couldn't

  1329. be

  1330. bothered.

  1331. In

  1332. fact,

  1333. it was

  1334. much more

  1335. serious

  1336. than that.

  1337. Look at

  1338. the end

  1339. of verse

  1340. 34.

  1341. Esau

  1342. despised

  1343. his

  1344. birthright.

  1345. He

  1346. turned

  1347. his

  1348. back

  1349. on God's

  1350. blessing.

  1351. You

  1352. see,

  1353. the

  1354. birthright

  1355. was

  1356. God's

  1357. blessing.

  1358. It was

  1359. a gracious

  1360. gift from

  1361. God that

  1362. only God

  1363. could give,

  1364. yet these

  1365. two brothers

  1366. show a

  1367. complete

  1368. disregard

  1369. for it.

  1370. Jacob

  1371. tries to

  1372. deceive his

  1373. way into

  1374. the blessing.

  1375. Esau,

  1376. on the

  1377. other hand,

  1378. despises and

  1379. gives up

  1380. the blessing.

  1381. Now,

  1382. before we

  1383. go pointing

  1384. fingers at

  1385. this feuding

  1386. family,

  1387. I think we

  1388. need to turn

  1389. the mirror

  1390. around,

  1391. don't we?

  1392. doesn't

  1393. this just

  1394. look a

  1395. little bit

  1396. like us?

  1397. Maybe

  1398. like Jacob,

  1399. we try to

  1400. deceive our

  1401. way into

  1402. God's

  1403. blessing.

  1404. We'll use

  1405. any means

  1406. possible to

  1407. try and

  1408. force God's

  1409. hands to

  1410. bless us and

  1411. make things

  1412. go well for

  1413. us.

  1414. We might

  1415. be making

  1416. pots of

  1417. stew,

  1418. but we

  1419. can try a

  1420. bit harder

  1421. in our

  1422. prayers and

  1423. we can do

  1424. a bit more

  1425. serving and

  1426. Lord,

  1427. have you

  1428. seen what

  1429. I've done

  1430. and you've

  1431. got to

  1432. bless me

  1433. now?

  1434. Or perhaps

  1435. we're like

  1436. Esau and

  1437. we despise

  1438. the blessings

  1439. that God

  1440. has already

  1441. given us.

  1442. Maybe

  1443. you've been

  1444. raised in a

  1445. home where

  1446. you've been

  1447. taught the

  1448. gospel.

  1449. Maybe

  1450. you're a bit

  1451. older and

  1452. you're just

  1453. coming along

  1454. week by

  1455. week and

  1456. you have

  1457. the privilege

  1458. of a good

  1459. church to

  1460. support you,

  1461. but no,

  1462. you just

  1463. prefer the

  1464. temporary

  1465. comforts of

  1466. life and

  1467. you push

  1468. Christ and

  1469. his gospel

  1470. to one

  1471. side.

  1472. You despise

  1473. what you

  1474. have and

  1475. you decide

  1476. to go it

  1477. alone.

  1478. You see,

  1479. both these

  1480. brothers are

  1481. saying,

  1482. I don't

  1483. need God.

  1484. I can do

  1485. it another

  1486. way.

  1487. I don't

  1488. need grace.

  1489. I'm well

  1490. able.

  1491. What's God

  1492. going to do

  1493. with these

  1494. deceiving and

  1495. despising

  1496. brothers?

  1497. More to

  1498. the point,

  1499. what is God

  1500. going to do

  1501. with us?

  1502. Well,

  1503. God's

  1504. response

  1505. is shocking

  1506. because he

  1507. doesn't

  1508. treat us

  1509. as our

  1510. sins

  1511. deserve.

  1512. God in

  1513. response

  1514. sends a

  1515. savior.

  1516. He would

  1517. send his

  1518. son,

  1519. the promised

  1520. son who

  1521. would come

  1522. from a

  1523. fighting,

  1524. feuding

  1525. family like

  1526. this.

  1527. A son

  1528. would come,

  1529. not like

  1530. Jacob,

  1531. not like

  1532. Esau,

  1533. and thankfully

  1534. not like

  1535. us,

  1536. but God's

  1537. own son,

  1538. his perfect

  1539. son.

  1540. You see,

  1541. the blessings

  1542. of God

  1543. could only

  1544. come through

  1545. the grace

  1546. of his

  1547. son,

  1548. the Lord

  1549. Jesus Christ,

  1550. the one

  1551. who is the

  1552. firstborn over

  1553. all of

  1554. creation,

  1555. the one

  1556. whose birthright

  1557. means he

  1558. owns all

  1559. things and he

  1560. rules all

  1561. things and has

  1562. power and

  1563. authority and

  1564. is supreme.

  1565. But yet

  1566. this son,

  1567. who being

  1568. very in

  1569. nature God,

  1570. didn't

  1571. consider

  1572. equality

  1573. with God

  1574. something to

  1575. be used

  1576. or grasped

  1577. for his

  1578. own advantage.

  1579. Instead,

  1580. he willingly

  1581. gave up

  1582. his birthright

  1583. to enter

  1584. into this

  1585. world to

  1586. serve us.

  1587. He made

  1588. himself

  1589. nothing.

  1590. He humbled

  1591. himself by

  1592. becoming

  1593. obedient to

  1594. death,

  1595. even death

  1596. on a cross.

  1597. He died

  1598. for our

  1599. deceiving and

  1600. deception so

  1601. that we

  1602. could be

  1603. forgiven and

  1604. become heirs

  1605. and co-heirs

  1606. with Christ.

  1607. Jesus took

  1608. the low

  1609. position,

  1610. the humble

  1611. position.

  1612. He became

  1613. one with no

  1614. status and

  1615. no strength

  1616. so that we

  1617. might share

  1618. in his

  1619. birthright and

  1620. receive all

  1621. of his

  1622. blessings

  1623. freely.

  1624. Shocking.

  1625. None of us

  1626. deserve such

  1627. grace.

  1628. But God

  1629. responds in

  1630. grace to

  1631. all of our

  1632. mess.

  1633. blessings.

  1634. He blesses

  1635. us with

  1636. his salvation

  1637. now,

  1638. today and

  1639. forever because

  1640. he loves

  1641. us.

  1642. How are we

  1643. going to

  1644. experience this

  1645. grace?

  1646. Well, don't

  1647. be foolish like

  1648. Jacob and try and

  1649. deceive your way

  1650. into God and

  1651. do all kinds of

  1652. things to think

  1653. that somehow you

  1654. deserve it or

  1655. you've earned

  1656. it.

  1657. don't be like

  1658. Esau and be

  1659. proud and

  1660. despise what

  1661. God has given

  1662. to you.

  1663. Instead, we

  1664. humble ourselves.

  1665. We bow in

  1666. surrender.

  1667. We thank him

  1668. for his grace.

  1669. And we go

  1670. with a view

  1671. of the world

  1672. that has no

  1673. favourites.

  1674. But just as

  1675. God has shown

  1676. grace to me,

  1677. we will show

  1678. grace to

  1679. every person,

  1680. to every

  1681. sinner,

  1682. just like you

  1683. and me.

  1684. Because God

  1685. has no favourites

  1686. and he loves

  1687. for people to

  1688. turn to him.

  1689. So what can

  1690. we learn from

  1691. this feuding

  1692. family?

  1693. Well, we may

  1694. struggle with

  1695. God's ways,

  1696. but he's given

  1697. us prayer to

  1698. sustain us.

  1699. grace to

  1700. God's grace.

  1701. We may be

  1702. surprised at

  1703. God's choice,

  1704. but how

  1705. wonderful that

  1706. grace is.

  1707. We may be

  1708. shocked over

  1709. God's

  1710. response,

  1711. but how

  1712. thankful we

  1713. are that he

  1714. sent his

  1715. son and

  1716. has called

  1717. us to be

  1718. conduits of

  1719. his grace

  1720. to a needy

  1721. and broken

  1722. world.

  1723. God's

  1724. love.

  1725. Let's pray.

  1726. Father, we

  1727. might look at

  1728. this family

  1729. of Isaac and

  1730. Rebecca and

  1731. Jacob and

  1732. Esau and

  1733. point the

  1734. finger and

  1735. go, I'm

  1736. glad I'm not

  1737. like them.

  1738. How wrong

  1739. we are.

  1740. Father, thank

  1741. you for your

  1742. grace.

  1743. Thank you for

  1744. your intervention.

  1745. Thank you for

  1746. your love.

  1747. Thank you that

  1748. you choose

  1749. sinners such

  1750. as us.

  1751. Thank you for

  1752. Jesus, that

  1753. he came,

  1754. giving up

  1755. his status

  1756. and his

  1757. position of

  1758. privilege,

  1759. gladly

  1760. surrendering

  1761. his birthright

  1762. that we

  1763. might gain

  1764. all his

  1765. blessings for

  1766. us.

  1767. Father, help

  1768. us to

  1769. immerse

  1770. ourselves

  1771. daily in

  1772. your grace.

  1773. Give us

  1774. eyes that

  1775. see people

  1776. as you see

  1777. them, that

  1778. we would

  1779. not have

  1780. favourites,

  1781. but that

  1782. we would

  1783. love others

  1784. as you

  1785. have loved

  1786. us.

  1787. Help us, we

  1788. pray, in

  1789. Jesus' name.

  1790. Amen.

  1791. Amen.

  1792. Amen.

  1793. Amen.

  1794. Amen.

  1795. Amen.

  1796. Amen.

  1797. Amen.

  1798. Amen.

  1799. Amen.

  1800. Amen.

  1801. Amen.

  1802. Amen.

  1803. Amen.

  1804. Amen.

  1805. Amen.

  1806. Amen.

  1807. Amen.

  1808. Amen.

  1809. Amen.

  1810. A song we're

  1811. going to sing,

  1812. what love could

  1813. remember no

  1814. wrongs we have

  1815. done.

  1816. That's amazing

  1817. love that

  1818. would forgive

  1819. us.

  1820. Our sins may

  1821. be many,

  1822. but his mercy

  1823. is always more.

  1824. Let's stand

  1825. together as we

  1826. sing.

  1827. Amen.

  1828. Amen.

  1829. Amen.

  1830. Amen.

  1831. Amen.

  1832. Amen.

  1833. Amen.

  1834. Amen.

  1835. Amen.

  1836. Amen.

  1837. Amen.

  1838. Amen.

  1839. Amen.

  1840. Amen.

  1841. Amen.

  1842. Amen.

  1843. Amen.

  1844. Amen.

  1845. Amen.

  1846. Amen.

  1847. Amen.

  1848. Amen.

  1849. Amen.

  1850. Amen.

  1851. Amen.

  1852. Amen.

  1853. Amen.

  1854. Amen.

  1855. Amen.

  1856. Amen.

  1857. Amen.

  1858. Amen.

  1859. Amen.

  1860. Amen.

  1861. Amen.

  1862. Amen.

  1863. Amen.

  1864. Amen.

  1865. Amen.

  1866. Thank you.

  1867. Thank you.

  1868. Thank you.

  1869. Thank you.

  1870. Thank you.

  1871. Thank you.

  1872. Thank you.

  1873. Thank you.

  1874. Thank you.

  1875. Thank you.

  1876. Thank you.

  1877. Thank you.

  1878. Thank you.

  1879. Thank you.

  1880. Thank you.

  1881. Thank you.

  1882. Thank you.

  1883. Thank you.

  1884. Thank you.

  1885. Thank you.

  1886. Thank you.

  1887. Thank you.

  1888. Thank you.

1889. And so we thank you.

  1890. We praise you.

1891. Send us with your grace.

1892. Fill us with your spirit's power that we might live well as your people this coming week.

1893. coming week. May it be for your glory and for our good. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

1894. Just a reminder, a couple of things. Tea and coffee afterwards. You can catch up with

1895. Trevor and Kayla and Rua then. Tonight, I forgot to mention this, tonight at half past six in this

1896. hall. There'll be a teaching on the Psalms. So how do we teach or how do we interpret the Psalms?

1897. How do we apply it to our life in our situation? You're welcome to come along to it. It's part of

1898. the MBC courses that are offered, but it's one that you can just come to this evening from half

1899. past six until half past nine. Yeah, there'll be a break in between. You don't have to say
