  1. One, Genesis chapter 26, right at the beginning of the Bible.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  2. Now as I read, we're going to read all of chapter 26.

  3. As I do, I want you to think a little bit with me.

  4. You know we've been looking at the life of Abraham from Genesis 12 through to chapter 25.

  5. Just think about all that you learnt about Abraham.

  6. And as we read chapter 26, I want you to compare and contrast the life of Abraham and Isaac.

  7. So see if you can see any differences between the two.

  8. And see if you can spot anything similar or the same experiences that they went through.

  9. So as I read, try and do a bit of comparing, contrasting work.

  10. Let's read chapter 26, starting at verse 1.

  11. Now there was a famine in the land.

  12. Besides the previous famine in Abraham's time.

  13. And Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines in Gerar.

  14. The Lord appeared to Isaac and said,

  15. Do not go down to Egypt.

  16. Live in the land where I tell you to live.

  17. Stay in this land for a while and I will be with you and will bless you.

  18. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands

  19. and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.

  20. I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky

  21. and will give them all these lands

  22. and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed.

  23. Because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him

  24. keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.

  25. So Isaac stayed in Gerar.

  26. When the men of that place asked him about his wife,

  27. he said,

  28. She is my sister.

  29. Because he was afraid to say,

  30. She is my wife.

  31. He thought,

  32. The men of this place will kill me on account of Rebekah

  33. because she is beautiful.

  34. When Isaac had been there a long time,

  35. Abimelech, king of the Philistines,

  36. looked down from a window

  37. and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.

  38. So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said,

  39. She is really your wife.

  40. Why did you say she is my sister?

  41. Isaac answered him,

  42. Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.

  43. Then Abimelech said,

  44. What is this you have done to us?

  45. One of the men might have slept with your wife

  46. and you would have brought guilt upon us.

  47. So Abimelech gave orders to all the people,

  48. Anyone who harms this man or his wife

  49. shall surely be put to death.

  50. Isaac planted crops in that land

  51. and in the same year

  52. reaped a hundredfold

  53. because the Lord blessed him.

  54. The man became rich

  55. and his wealth continued to grow

  56. until he became very wealthy.

  57. He had so many flocks and herds and servants

  58. that the Philistines envied him.

  59. So all the wells that his father's servants

  60. had dug in the time of his father Abraham,

  61. the Philistines stopped up,

  62. filling them with earth.

  63. Then Abimelech said to Isaac,

  64. Move away from us.

  65. You have become too powerful for us.

  66. So Isaac moved away from there

  67. and camped in the valley of Gerar

  68. where he settled.

  69. Isaac reopened the wells

  70. that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham,

  71. which the Philistines had stopped up

  72. after Abraham had died

  73. and gave them the same names

  74. his father had given them.

  75. Isaac's servants dug in the valley

  76. and discovered a well of fresh water there.

  77. But the herdsmen of Gerar

  78. quarrelled with those of Isaac

  79. and said,

  80. The water is ours.

  81. So he named the well

  82. Essek

  83. because they disputed with him.

  84. Then they dug another well

  85. but they quarrelled over that one also.

  86. So he named it Sitna.

  87. He moved on from there

  88. and dug another well

  89. and no one quarrelled over it.

  90. He named it Rehoboth

  91. saying,

  92. Now the Lord has given us room

  93. and we will flourish in the land.

  94. From there he went to Beersheba.

  95. That night the Lord appeared to him and said,

  96. I am the Lord God of your father Abraham.

  97. Do not be afraid

  98. for I am with you

  99. and I will bless you,

  100. will increase the number of your descendants

  101. for the sake of my servant Abraham.

  102. Isaac built an altar there

  103. and called on the name of the Lord.

  104. There he pitched his tent

  105. and there his servants dug a well.

  106. Meanwhile,

  107. Abimelech came to him from Gerar

  108. with Ahuzah,

  109. his personal advisor

  110. and Fickle,

  111. the commander of the forces.

  112. Isaac asked them,

  113. Why have you come to me

  114. since you were hostile to me

  115. and sent me away?

  116. They answered,

  117. We saw clearly

  118. that the Lord was with you.

  119. So he said,

  120. There ought to be a sworn agreement

  121. between us,

  122. between us and you.

  123. Let us make a treaty with you

  124. that you will do to us no harm,

  125. just as we did not harm you,

  126. but always treated you well

  127. and sent you away peacefully.

  128. And now you are blessed

  129. by the Lord.

  130. Well, Isaac then made a feast for them

  131. and they ate and drank.

  132. Early in the next morning,

  133. the men swore an oath to each other.

  134. Then Isaac sent them on their way

  135. and they went away peacefully.

  136. That day Isaac's servants came

  137. and told them about the well

  138. they had dug

  139. and they said,

  140. We found water.

  141. He called it Sheba.

  142. And to this day,

  143. the name of the town

  144. has been Beersheba.

  145. Well, let's pray

  146. and ask for God's blessing to us

  147. as we think about this scripture.

  148. Father, thank you.

  149. Thank you for this ancient account

  150. of the life of Isaac

  151. and his relationship with you.

  152. And we pray that as we look at it together,

  153. we would encounter the same living God

  154. who continues to bless his people.

  155. Father, we do not want to go out of this building

  156. being the same as what we came into it.

  157. But we want to leave encouraged,

  158. filled with confidence

  159. in our trust in you,

  160. changed in how we live our lives,

  161. living for your glory.

  162. So help us now

  163. by the power of your Holy Spirit,

  164. we pray.

  165. In Jesus' name.

  166. Amen.

  167. Well, how did you get on

  168. in your compare and contrast?

  169. It sounds a bit like

  170. kind of class time again,

  171. doesn't it?

  172. What was the difference

  173. and what was the same

  174. about the life of Isaac and Abraham?

  175. Well, the only real difference is

  176. their names.

  177. One was called Abraham

  178. and one was called Isaac.

  179. Yes, they had wives

  180. and their wives' names were different too,

  181. but the rest is virtually the same.

  182. That's what we're to see

  183. in chapter 26.

  184. Isaac's experience

  185. is the same as Abraham's experience.

  186. And to help you,

  187. I've got a little chart

  188. on the screen

  189. that you can follow along.

  190. This is what we're to see,

  191. that they were the same.

  192. They had the same experiences.

  193. Look at verse 1.

  194. Now there was a famine in the land

  195. beside the previous famine

  196. in Abraham's time.

  197. So they both faced the same crisis.

  198. No food and no water.

  199. In fact, we'll discover

  200. as we go through the account

  201. that Isaac also faces

  202. the same fears.

  203. He's afraid his wife

  204. will be taken

  205. and he will be killed.

  206. So he pretends

  207. that Rebecca

  208. is his sister.

  209. The exact same thing

  210. as his father had done.

  211. And they also face

  212. the same opposition

  213. as locals fight

  214. over access to water

  215. and to wells.

  216. And Isaac,

  217. just like Abraham,

  218. makes an agreement

  219. with the surrounding nations.

  220. So it seems that

  221. there is a pattern

  222. to life.

  223. A pattern that can be

  224. common to us all.

  225. You see,

  226. we might live in different times

  227. and different places,

  228. but there's a familiarity

  229. to life.

  230. We all face

  231. different crises.

  232. We all have

  233. different kinds of fears.

  234. We all have opposition.

  235. But that's not all.

  236. The main comparison

  237. between Abraham

  238. and Isaac

  239. is God's

  240. faithfulness.

  241. God was faithful

  242. to Abraham

  243. and God is faithful

  244. to Isaac.

  245. In the familiarity

  246. of life,

  247. God is relentlessly

  248. faithful.

  249. You see,

  250. generations may come

  251. and go,

  252. but God

  253. remains the same.

  254. He is consistently

  255. and persistently

  256. faithful.

  257. He's loyal

  258. and dependable.

  259. You can count

  260. on this God.

  261. He's not going

  262. to let you down.

  263. He is the same God

  264. yesterday,

  265. today,

  266. and forever.

  267. So in the familiarity

  268. of life,

  269. let's see how God

  270. is relentlessly

  271. faithful.

  272. four things

  273. we're going to look

  274. at.

  275. Here's the first one.

  276. Whoops,

  277. how did that happen?

  278. Well,

  279. there you've got

  280. them all at once.

  281. No surprises.

  282. So what's the crisis

  283. as we remember

  284. God's promise

  285. in a crisis?

  286. What's the crisis?

  287. Well,

  288. it's there in verse 1,

  289. isn't there?

  290. Now there was a famine

  291. in the land.

  292. Now we might

  293. deface famine

  294. ourselves,

  295. but back in our

  296. history,

  297. in the nation of Ireland,

  298. there was a terrible famine.

  299. Thousands died

  300. and over a million

  301. people travelled

  302. to the US

  303. in search of a better life.

  304. It's a normal

  305. and understandable

  306. response.

  307. When you haven't

  308. got food,

  309. you move out

  310. to go find it

  311. somewhere else.

  312. And that's exactly

  313. what Isaac did.

  314. Look at the rest

  315. of verse 1.

  316. He went to Abimelech,

  317. king of the Philistines,

  318. in Gerar.

  319. But it seems

  320. this was just

  321. a stop-off point.

  322. Isaac had plans

  323. to take his family

  324. down to Egypt

  325. where food grew

  326. in abundance

  327. and water flowed

  328. freely.

  329. Now while understandable

  330. to go down

  331. to Egypt,

  332. going down

  333. to Egypt

  334. was to walk

  335. away

  336. from God.

  337. Look at verse 2.

  338. Look at the warning.

  339. The Lord

  340. appeared to Isaac

  341. and said,

  342. Do not go down

  343. to Egypt.

  344. Live in the land

  345. where I tell you

  346. to live.

  347. You see,

  348. God had made

  349. the promise

  350. to Isaac's

  351. father Abraham

  352. that he would

  353. have a land

  354. for himself

  355. and for his people.

  356. So if they were

  357. to head off

  358. down to Egypt,

  359. it would be

  360. an act of

  361. disobedience.

  362. Egypt might have

  363. solved an immediate

  364. problem.

  365. It would have put

  366. food in the belly.

  367. But it would

  368. create a deeper

  369. crisis

  370. in his relationship

  371. with God.

  372. God

  373. faithfully

  374. reminds

  375. Isaac

  376. of his

  377. promises.

  378. That he is

  379. a faithful

  380. God.

  381. In fact,

  382. the same

  383. promises he

  384. had given

  385. to his father

  386. are now

  387. repeated

  388. personally

  389. to Isaac.

  390. Let's review

  391. them very quickly.

  392. Verse 3.

  393. God says,

  394. Stay in the land.

  395. I will be

  396. with you

  397. and I will

  398. bless you.

  399. God promises

  400. to be present

  401. with his

  402. people.

  403. The rest of

  404. verse 3.

  405. Second promise

  406. for you,

  407. to you and your

  408. descendants,

  409. I will give

  410. all these

  411. lands.

  412. So God

  413. promises to

  414. be present

  415. and he promises

  416. to give them

  417. a place

  418. to live.

  419. There's a

  420. third promise

  421. in verse 4.

  422. He says,

  423. I will make

  424. your descendants

  425. as numerous

  426. as the stars

  427. in the sky.

  428. So God

  429. will be present,

  430. he gives them

  431. a place,

  432. and he promises

  433. them a big

  434. people.

  435. They will be

  436. a great

  437. people.

  438. And then the

  439. end of verse 4,

  440. the last

  441. promise.

  442. And through

  443. your offspring

  444. all nations

  445. on earth

  446. will be

  447. blessed.

  448. Did you get

  449. the promise?

  450. God says,

  451. I am going

  452. to have a

  453. people and

  454. they will

  455. be in

  456. God's

  457. place,

  458. enjoying

  459. God's

  460. presence,

  461. who in

  462. turn are

  463. going to

  464. be a

  465. blessing to

  466. all the

  467. nations

  468. around them.

  469. This is

  470. the kind

  471. of God

  472. I am.

  473. I made

  474. that promise

  475. to Abraham

  476. and I'm

  477. keeping that

  478. promise and

  479. this promise

  480. is for you,

  481. Isaac.

  482. It's as if

  483. God is coming

  484. to Isaac

  485. personally and

  486. saying,

  487. I am

  488. your God

  489. to.

  490. I'm not

  491. going to

  492. fail you,

  493. I'm not

  494. going to

  495. forget you

  496. in your

  497. crisis.

  498. I wonder

  499. what kind

  500. of crisis

  501. you are

  502. facing

  503. today.

  504. Some

  505. change in

  506. your

  507. experience

  508. of life,

  509. a trouble,

  510. a concern.

  511. And

  512. sometimes

  513. the only

  514. option we

  515. can see,

  516. the only

  517. solution we

  518. can come

  519. up with is

  520. to do the

  521. Isaac thing

  522. and head

  523. for Egypt.

  524. Turn away

  525. from God

  526. and trust

  527. our own

  528. direction.

  529. Well,

  530. the right

  531. response is

  532. always to

  533. obey God,

  534. even if it

  535. doesn't make

  536. sense to

  537. us.

  538. So,

  539. end of

  540. verse 6,

  541. or verse 6,

  542. Isaac stayed

  543. in Gerar.

  544. He did

  545. what God

  546. had said.

  547. He settled

  548. down and

  549. he confronted

  550. his crisis

  551. head on with

  552. the promises

  553. of God

  554. ringing in

  555. his ears.

  556. And we

  557. need to

  558. hear that

  559. same promise

  560. today as

  561. we go

  562. through life,

  563. whatever

  564. crisis may

  565. come,

  566. listen to

  567. the promise,

  568. I will be

  569. with you,

  570. I will

  571. never leave

  572. you,

  573. and I will

  574. never forsake

  575. you.

  576. I am the

  577. same yesterday,

  578. today,

  579. and forever.

  580. You see,

  581. in the

  582. familiarity

  583. of life,

  584. God is

  585. relentlessly

  586. faithful.

  587. He does

  588. not forget

  589. his people.

  590. So,

  591. remembering

  592. God's promise

  593. in a crisis.

  594. Number two,

  595. seeing God's

  596. sovereignty

  597. in our

  598. fears.

  599. As Isaac

  600. settles down

  601. in Gerar

  602. with his

  603. family,

  604. he faces

  605. another

  606. challenge.

  607. It seems

  608. that the

  609. kings in

  610. that place

  611. were known

  612. to take

  613. the wives

  614. of visitors

  615. and kill

  616. off the

  617. husbands.

  618. So,

  619. Isaac comes

  620. up with

  621. an old

  622. family plan.

  623. He did

  624. exactly

  625. what his

  626. father had

  627. done.

  628. He told

  629. porkies,

  630. didn't he?

  631. Look at

  632. verse 7.

  633. When the

  634. men of that

  635. place asked

  636. him about

  637. his wife,

  638. he said,

  639. oh,

  640. she's my

  641. sister.

  642. because he

  643. was afraid

  644. to say,

  645. she is

  646. my wife.

  647. He thought

  648. the men

  649. of this

  650. place might

  651. kill me

  652. on account

  653. of Rebecca

  654. because she

  655. was beautiful.

  656. I mean,

  657. that's what

  658. happens when

  659. men abuse

  660. their powers

  661. of position.

  662. They take

  663. as they

  664. please.

  665. So,

  666. naturally

  667. enough,

  668. Isaac is

  669. afraid

  670. for his

  671. life.

  672. And we

  673. might think,

  674. well,

  675. wasn't that

  676. a clever

  677. plan on

  678. Isaac's

  679. part?

  680. No,

  681. don't be

  682. fooled by

  683. his plan.

  684. It's wrong

  685. on two

  686. counts.

  687. First,

  688. it seems

  689. that he's

  690. quite happy

  691. to put

  692. his own

  693. wife in

  694. danger

  695. with all

  696. these other

  697. men to

  698. save his

  699. own bacon.

  700. Not very

  701. loving.

  702. It seems

  703. he's forgotten

  704. his wedding

  705. vows to

  706. protect and

  707. to cherish.

  708. Second,

  709. he's just

  710. had a

  711. personal

  712. commitment

  713. from God

  714. who came

  715. to him

  716. and said,

  717. I will

  718. be with

  719. you and

  720. I will

  721. bless

  722. you.

  723. And as

  724. soon as

  725. the challenge

  726. comes,

  727. it seems

  728. he's forgotten

  729. that promise

  730. too.

  731. His fears

  732. are real,

  733. but his

  734. response to

  735. those fears

  736. are sinful.

  737. Rather than

  738. speak the

  739. truth about

  740. his wife,

  741. rather than

  742. trust God's

  743. promise,

  744. he does

  745. what he

  746. thinks is

  747. best for

  748. himself.

  749. well,

  750. so far

  751. so good.

  752. It seems

  753. to be

  754. working,

  755. doesn't

  756. it?

  757. He's

  758. keeping

  759. his life.

  760. However,

  761. his plan

  762. is about

  763. to unravel.

  764. Verse 8,

  765. when Isaac

  766. had been

  767. there a

  768. long time,

  769. so this

  770. has gone

  771. over years,

  772. Abimelech,

  773. king of the

  774. Philistines,

  775. looked down

  776. from the

  777. window,

  778. and what

  779. did he

  780. see?

  781. Isaac

  782. caressing

  783. his wife,

  784. Rebecca.

  785. It seems

  786. Isaac and

  787. Rebecca's

  788. secret

  789. rendezvous

  790. had raised

  791. suspicion.

  792. That's not

  793. the way

  794. brothers and

  795. sisters behave

  796. with each

  797. other.

  798. The game

  799. was up.

  800. Verse 9,

  801. so Abimelech

  802. summoned Isaac

  803. and said,

  804. she is really

  805. your wife.

  806. Why did

  807. you say

  808. she is

  809. my sister?

  810. His heart

  811. has been

  812. exposed.

  813. Isaac is

  814. a selfish,

  815. out for

  816. himself,

  817. I know

  818. better than

  819. God sort

  820. of guy.

  821. But what

  822. we need to

  823. see here is

  824. not just

  825. his sinful

  826. response to

  827. his fears.

  828. What we're

  829. to see is

  830. God's

  831. sovereign care

  832. over his

  833. people despite

  834. their sin.

  835. Look at

  836. verse 11,

  837. so Abimelech

  838. gave orders

  839. to all the

  840. people,

  841. anyone who

  842. harms this

  843. man or

  844. his wife,

  845. shall be

  846. put to

  847. death.

  848. The order

  849. could have

  850. been so

  851. different from

  852. the king.

  853. The king

  854. could command

  855. anything.

  856. He could

  857. have said,

  858. let's put

  859. Isaac to

  860. death and

  861. we'll take

  862. Rebecca.

  863. But no,

  864. God in his

  865. sovereignty

  866. preserves and

  867. protects Isaac

  868. and Rebecca.

  869. in some

  870. ways it

  871. shouldn't

  872. happen but

  873. it does

  874. because this

  875. is the kind

  876. of God

  877. we have

  878. who is

  879. watching over

  880. his people.

  881. Now don't

  882. you and I

  883. have our own

  884. fears?

  885. We might

  886. fear our

  887. spouse being

  888. taken by

  889. somebody in

  890. the town we

  891. visit.

  892. But don't

  893. we have fears

  894. about speaking

  895. the truth and

  896. declaring what

  897. we believe.

  898. Fearing how

  899. people will

  900. respond to

  901. us.

  902. Fears about

  903. trusting God

  904. to deliver on

  905. his promises.

  906. And like

  907. Isaac, ashamed

  908. to say it,

  909. we've not

  910. always responded

  911. rightly.

  912. Instead of

  913. asking God to

  914. strengthen our

  915. faith and

  916. enable us to

  917. trust, well

  918. we've adopted

  919. the Isaac plan

  920. haven't we?

  921. We've told

  922. lies.

  923. But to our

  924. astonishment

  925. as we look

  926. back over

  927. our life, we

  928. see God's

  929. sovereign hand

  930. of care upon

  931. us, watching

  932. out for us.

  933. Of course, this

  934. doesn't mean it's

  935. a free pass to

  936. sin and go,

  937. it doesn't matter

  938. what I do, God's

  939. looking after me.

  940. No, but doesn't

  941. it amaze you?

  942. Aren't you

  943. amazed at how

  944. God watches

  945. over our life

  946. even when we

  947. make sinful

  948. choices and

  949. selfish decisions?

  950. This is the

  951. kind of God

  952. we have who's

  953. faithful to his

  954. people.

  955. You see, in the

  956. familiarity of

  957. life, God is

  958. relentlessly

  959. faithful.

  960. Third,

  961. experiencing God's

  962. flourishing in the

  963. opposition.

  964. salvation.

  965. Well, despite

  966. Isaac's wobbles,

  967. God continues to

  968. bless.

  969. This is the

  970. faithfulness of

  971. God.

  972. Verse 12,

  973. Isaac planted

  974. crops in the

  975. land and the

  976. same year reaped

  977. a hundredfold

  978. because the

  979. Lord blessed

  980. him.

  981. The man became

  982. rich and his

  983. wealth continued

  984. to grow until

  985. he became very

  986. wealthy.

  987. Now, that's

  988. great for Isaac,

  989. but there's a

  990. problem when

  991. you become

  992. successful.

  993. It breeds

  994. enemies.

  995. People don't

  996. like you

  997. anymore.

  998. The locals

  999. have had

  1000. enough.

  1001. Verse 14,

  1002. he had so

  1003. many flocks

  1004. and herds,

  1005. the servants

  1006. from the

  1007. Philistines

  1008. envied him.

  1009. So all the

  1010. wells that his

  1011. father's servant

  1012. had dug,

  1013. well, they

  1014. just filled

  1015. them up with

  1016. earth.

  1017. A little bit

  1018. of skull

  1019. duggery was

  1020. going on.

  1021. The message

  1022. was crystal

  1023. clear.

  1024. Isaac, pack

  1025. your bags and

  1026. get out of

  1027. town.

  1028. We don't

  1029. want your

  1030. sort round

  1031. here.

  1032. In fact, he

  1033. got his

  1034. marching orders

  1035. from the

  1036. king himself.

  1037. Verse 16,

  1038. Abimelech said,

  1039. move away from

  1040. us, you've

  1041. become too

  1042. powerful.

  1043. So Isaac

  1044. moved away

  1045. from the

  1046. people.

  1047. We would

  1048. think that's

  1049. the end of

  1050. the situation,

  1051. but it's

  1052. not.

  1053. It seems

  1054. the locals

  1055. wouldn't let

  1056. him settle.

  1057. Wherever

  1058. Isaac went,

  1059. they followed

  1060. as he

  1061. began to

  1062. dig wells

  1063. for water.

  1064. No sooner

  1065. had he

  1066. started than

  1067. the protesters

  1068. arrived.

  1069. No wells

  1070. here.

  1071. Down with

  1072. Isaac.

  1073. Save our

  1074. planet, or

  1075. whoever else

  1076. happened to

  1077. be there.

  1078. In fact, the

  1079. hostility was

  1080. so severe,

  1081. Isaac named

  1082. the wells,

  1083. we see this

  1084. in verse 19

  1085. and 20,

  1086. Essek and

  1087. Sitna.

  1088. Or in

  1089. English, we

  1090. would say

  1091. disruption and

  1092. opposition.

  1093. Now it's

  1094. not like

  1095. Isaac could

  1096. just head

  1097. off into

  1098. town and

  1099. buy some

  1100. water

  1101. himself.

  1102. No, this

  1103. was serious.

  1104. The water

  1105. supply had

  1106. been cut

  1107. off.

  1108. No water,

  1109. no life.

  1110. What's he

  1111. going to

  1112. do?

  1113. Well, he

  1114. would do

  1115. the thing

  1116. that we

  1117. would do

  1118. in a

  1119. desperate

  1120. situation,

  1121. dig another

  1122. well.

  1123. Would it

  1124. be different

  1125. this time?

  1126. Well, let's

  1127. see, verse

  1128. 22.

  1129. He moved

  1130. on from

  1131. there and

  1132. dug another

  1133. well and

  1134. no one

  1135. quarreled

  1136. over it.

  1137. He named

  1138. it Rehoboth

  1139. saying,

  1140. now the

  1141. Lord has

  1142. given us

  1143. room or

  1144. given us

  1145. space and

  1146. we will

  1147. flourish in

  1148. the land.

  1149. You see,

  1150. once again,

  1151. we see the

  1152. faithfulness of

  1153. God at work

  1154. in the life

  1155. of Isaac.

  1156. All the

  1157. opposition,

  1158. but yet God

  1159. remains true.

  1160. But God

  1161. does even

  1162. more than

  1163. this.

  1164. He digs

  1165. him out

  1166. of an

  1167. even bigger

  1168. hole.

  1169. You see,

  1170. this is

  1171. God being

  1172. faithful to

  1173. his plan.

  1174. You see,

  1175. there was a

  1176. time when

  1177. God's people

  1178. were in

  1179. God's place

  1180. and they

  1181. enjoyed God's

  1182. presence.

  1183. They were

  1184. given all

  1185. that they

  1186. needed and

  1187. more.

  1188. All the

  1189. food they

  1190. wanted,

  1191. all the

  1192. water they

  1193. wanted.

  1194. In fact,

  1195. they flourished

  1196. in that land,

  1197. didn't they?

  1198. we know

  1199. it as

  1200. the

  1201. Garden

  1202. of Eden.

  1203. Adam and

  1204. Eve were

  1205. given those

  1206. clear instructions

  1207. to be

  1208. fruitful and

  1209. increase,

  1210. to fill the

  1211. earth and

  1212. to subdue it.

  1213. Man and

  1214. woman together

  1215. were to

  1216. expand the

  1217. borders of

  1218. Eden so

  1219. that humanity

  1220. might flourish

  1221. enjoying God

  1222. and displaying

  1223. his glory.

  1224. That was

  1225. the plan.

  1226. But enter

  1227. the opposition,

  1228. the serpent.

  1229. Instead of

  1230. flourishing,

  1231. the man and

  1232. woman failed.

  1233. Instead of

  1234. displaying God's

  1235. glory, they

  1236. rebelled and

  1237. took the glory.

  1238. But despite

  1239. all of the

  1240. opposition,

  1241. God remains

  1242. faithful to

  1243. his plan.

  1244. Fast forward

  1245. from the

  1246. Garden of Eden

  1247. to Isaac

  1248. digging wells

  1249. and we see

  1250. something of

  1251. God's faithfulness

  1252. being worked

  1253. out.

  1254. God's people

  1255. in God's

  1256. place,

  1257. enjoying God's

  1258. presence.

  1259. They have

  1260. been given

  1261. room,

  1262. they have

  1263. been given

  1264. space to

  1265. flourish in

  1266. the land

  1267. just as

  1268. God had

  1269. said.

  1270. You see,

  1271. sometimes we

  1272. see God's

  1273. faithfulness up

  1274. close and

  1275. personal.

  1276. Other times

  1277. we need to

  1278. take a bigger

  1279. step back and

  1280. see the bigger

  1281. picture and

  1282. see how God

  1283. is stubbornly

  1284. fulfilling his

  1285. plan for the

  1286. world because

  1287. he will always

  1288. have his

  1289. people in

  1290. his place,

  1291. enjoying his

  1292. presence so

  1293. that they

  1294. might flourish.

  1295. You see,

  1296. in the

  1297. familiarity of

  1298. life, God

  1299. is relentlessly

  1300. faithful.

  1301. people.

  1302. Fourth,

  1303. celebrating God's

  1304. blessing in

  1305. the nations.

  1306. So Isaac and

  1307. his family

  1308. continue to

  1309. flourish.

  1310. They live and

  1311. enjoy God's

  1312. presence.

  1313. His blessing is

  1314. being poured out

  1315. upon them.

  1316. But guess what?

  1317. God's blessing was

  1318. never to be

  1319. restricted to

  1320. Isaac.

  1321. God's promise

  1322. was always to

  1323. bless the

  1324. nations.

  1325. At first,

  1326. it seems

  1327. trouble is on

  1328. the horizon.

  1329. This time,

  1330. the heavy gang

  1331. have arrived,

  1332. verse 26.

  1333. The protesters

  1334. have gone home.

  1335. Now the big

  1336. guns have come

  1337. out, verse 26.

  1338. Meanwhile,

  1339. Abimelech had

  1340. come to him

  1341. from Gerar,

  1342. with Ahuzah,

  1343. his personal

  1344. advisor,

  1345. and fickle

  1346. the commander

  1347. of his

  1348. forces.

  1349. The military

  1350. might are

  1351. there.

  1352. Isaac asked

  1353. them,

  1354. why have you

  1355. come to me

  1356. since you

  1357. were hostile

  1358. to me and

  1359. sent me away?

  1360. Are you

  1361. looking for a

  1362. fight?

  1363. What's going

  1364. on here?

  1365. But Abimelech

  1366. hasn't come to

  1367. fight.

  1368. He's come to

  1369. be blessed.

  1370. Look at

  1371. verse 28.

  1372. They answered,

  1373. we saw

  1374. clearly that

  1375. the Lord

  1376. was with

  1377. you.

  1378. End of

  1379. verse 29.

  1380. And now

  1381. you are

  1382. blessed

  1383. by the

  1384. Lord.

  1385. Abimelech

  1386. has been

  1387. watching

  1388. Isaac's

  1389. life,

  1390. and he's

  1391. seen God's

  1392. goodness and

  1393. kindness to

  1394. Isaac,

  1395. and Abimelech

  1396. wants a

  1397. piece of

  1398. the pie.

  1399. You see,

  1400. God's people,

  1401. when they're

  1402. blessed,

  1403. and when

  1404. people look

  1405. in and see

  1406. the blessing

  1407. of God

  1408. upon them,

  1409. they are

  1410. also drawn

  1411. to God.

  1412. In Abimelech's

  1413. case, he

  1414. has a

  1415. plan.

  1416. Let's

  1417. read verse

  1418. 28.

  1419. He

  1420. answered,

  1421. we saw

  1422. clearly that

  1423. the Lord

  1424. was with

  1425. you,

  1426. so we

  1427. said,

  1428. there ought

  1429. to be a

  1430. sworn agreement

  1431. between us

  1432. and you.

  1433. Let us

  1434. make a

  1435. treaty

  1436. with you.

  1437. So promises

  1438. are given

  1439. one to

  1440. each other,

  1441. agreements

  1442. are made,

  1443. documents

  1444. are signed.

  1445. Verse 30,

  1446. Isaac then

  1447. made a

  1448. feast for

  1449. them,

  1450. they ate

  1451. and drank.

  1452. Early the

  1453. next morning

  1454. the men

  1455. swore an

  1456. oath to

  1457. each other,

  1458. then Isaac

  1459. sent them

  1460. away,

  1461. and they

  1462. went

  1463. peacefully.

  1464. It seems

  1465. something of

  1466. God's blessing

  1467. has begun

  1468. to rub

  1469. off on

  1470. Abimelech.

  1471. He now

  1472. leaves a

  1473. blessed man.

  1474. He now

  1475. goes home

  1476. peacefully.

  1477. Abimelech

  1478. leaves having

  1479. tasted

  1480. something of

  1481. God's goodness

  1482. and kindness.

  1483. Now this

  1484. encounter

  1485. mightn't seem

  1486. much to us,

  1487. but on

  1488. reflection it

  1489. is something

  1490. huge to

  1491. celebrate.

  1492. The nations

  1493. are now

  1494. beginning to

  1495. be blessed

  1496. through Isaac,

  1497. through his

  1498. family,

  1499. as they

  1500. come into

  1501. contact with

  1502. God's

  1503. people.

  1504. And what

  1505. Abimelech

  1506. has just

  1507. experienced is

  1508. a foretaste

  1509. of the

  1510. ultimate

  1511. peace that

  1512. we can

  1513. have and

  1514. that we

  1515. can enjoy.

  1516. You see,

  1517. God had

  1518. made these

  1519. promises to

  1520. Abraham,

  1521. now he's

  1522. made these

  1523. promises to

  1524. Isaac,

  1525. that the

  1526. nations of

  1527. the world

  1528. would be

  1529. blessed

  1530. through their

  1531. family.

  1532. Look back

  1533. with me to

  1534. verse 4.

  1535. Remember

  1536. God's

  1537. promise,

  1538. the end

  1539. of verse

  1540. 4?

  1541. God

  1542. says,

  1543. all

  1544. nations

  1545. on earth

  1546. will be

  1547. blessed.

  1548. Through

  1549. your

  1550. offspring,

  1551. all

  1552. nations

  1553. on earth

  1554. will be

  1555. blessed.

  1556. God

  1557. is saying

  1558. through

  1559. their

  1560. offspring,

  1561. a seed

  1562. would

  1563. come,

  1564. a son

  1565. who

  1566. would

  1567. bring

  1568. the

  1569. blessing

  1570. of peace

  1571. to

  1572. all

  1573. nations.

  1574. The New

  1575. Testament

  1576. makes that

  1577. clear to

  1578. us.

  1579. You can

  1580. see the

  1581. verse on

  1582. the screen.

  1583. The promises

  1584. were spoken

  1585. to Abraham

  1586. and to

  1587. his seed.

  1588. Scripture

  1589. does not

  1590. say,

  1591. and to

  1592. seeds,

  1593. meaning

  1594. many

  1595. people,

  1596. but,

  1597. and to

  1598. your

  1599. seed,

  1600. meaning

  1601. one

  1602. person

  1603. who is

  1604. Christ.

  1605. You see,

  1606. the promise

  1607. of blessing

  1608. and peace

  1609. is to

  1610. be found

  1611. in our

  1612. relationship

  1613. to Jesus

  1614. Christ.

  1615. You see,

  1616. it's as we

  1617. encounter

  1618. Jesus,

  1619. as we

  1620. come to

  1621. him,

  1622. we find

  1623. peace.

  1624. Through

  1625. Jesus,

  1626. through his

  1627. death for

  1628. our sins,

  1629. we gain

  1630. peace with

  1631. God and

  1632. we are

  1633. filled with

  1634. his peace.

  1635. So when

  1636. we face

  1637. into our

  1638. crisis,

  1639. when we're

  1640. overcome

  1641. by fears,

  1642. when we

  1643. experience

  1644. opposition,

  1645. we can

  1646. turn to

  1647. one who

  1648. fills us

  1649. with peace

  1650. and he

  1651. sends us

  1652. with his

  1653. peace.

  1654. Abimelech

  1655. saw in

  1656. Isaac

  1657. something of

  1658. God's

  1659. blessing

  1660. and he

  1661. was drawn

  1662. to it.

  1663. He

  1664. sought it

  1665. out.

  1666. He

  1667. longed

  1668. that he

  1669. could know

  1670. this

  1671. God

  1672. too.

  1673. I

  1674. wonder

  1675. what it

  1676. is as

  1677. people

  1678. look in

  1679. at the

  1680. community

  1681. of

  1682. Carigalline

  1683. Baptist

  1684. Church.

  1685. What do

  1686. they see?

  1687. Are they

  1688. drawn?

  1689. Are they

  1690. attracted

  1691. by what

  1692. the people

  1693. have?

  1694. You see,

  1695. as we

  1696. run to

  1697. Jesus,

  1698. we are

  1699. receiving

  1700. that peace

  1701. in our

  1702. guilt and

  1703. shame.

  1704. We enjoy

  1705. peace with

  1706. one another

  1707. as we

  1708. forgive

  1709. one another.

  1710. We

  1711. experience

  1712. peace

  1713. within our

  1714. own lives

  1715. as we

  1716. pray it

  1717. back to

  1718. God and

  1719. he fills

  1720. us

  1721. with

  1722. peace.

  1723. We

  1724. are a

  1725. people

  1726. who

  1727. are

  1728. flourishing

  1729. under

  1730. God's

  1731. blessing.

  1732. Through

  1733. Jesus we

  1734. have become

  1735. a community

  1736. of peace

  1737. where the

  1738. lost and

  1739. the broken

  1740. and the

  1741. hurting

  1742. are welcome

  1743. and can

  1744. come and

  1745. meet the

  1746. risen Lord

  1747. Jesus for

  1748. themselves.

  1749. The church

  1750. becomes a

  1751. refuge for

  1752. the nations

  1753. because the

  1754. church,

  1755. the people

  1756. of

  1757. Carigoline

  1758. Baptist

  1759. Church in

  1760. this context,

  1761. we are

  1762. God's

  1763. people in

  1764. God's

  1765. place,

  1766. experiencing

  1767. God's

  1768. presence so

  1769. that through

  1770. the church

  1771. the blessings

  1772. of Christ

  1773. might flow

  1774. to the

  1775. community

  1776. around us.

  1777. You see

  1778. in the

  1779. familiarity

  1780. of life

  1781. God

  1782. is

  1783. relentlessly

  1784. faithful.

  1785. He

  1786. doesn't

  1787. give up.

  1788. He

  1789. doesn't

  1790. forget.

  1791. He has

  1792. made His

  1793. promises and

  1794. He has

  1795. kept His

  1796. promises

  1797. throughout the

  1798. generations and

  1799. He is

  1800. keeping His

  1801. promise to

  1802. us today.

  1803. He is

  1804. faithful

  1805. and He

  1806. will cause

  1807. His people

  1808. to flourish.

  1809. We are

  1810. blessed.

  1811. Let's

  1812. pray.

  1813. Amen.

  1814. Father God,

  1815. we look

  1816. back over

  1817. our lives

  1818. and we

  1819. can see

  1820. so much

  1821. that is

  1822. perhaps

  1823. repeated,

  1824. so much

  1825. the same,

  1826. the endless

  1827. cycle of

  1828. familiarity,

  1829. the routine,

  1830. but yet

  1831. in every

  1832. step that

  1833. we take,

  1834. in all

  1835. that we

  1836. do,

  1837. you are

  1838. constant.

  1839. You never

  1840. change.

  1841. You are

  1842. persistently

  1843. and consistently

  1844. faithful.

  1845. You are

  1846. doing what

  1847. you have

  1848. promised.

  1849. You have

  1850. caused a

  1851. people to

  1852. exist

  1853. for your

  1854. glory.

  1855. help us

  1856. that we

  1857. might live

  1858. out this

  1859. life well,

  1860. that we

  1861. would become

  1862. an attractive

  1863. community

  1864. as we

  1865. share the

  1866. peace of

  1867. Christ with

  1868. those around

  1869. us.

  1870. Father,

  1871. we long

  1872. that by

  1873. your Holy

  1874. Spirit,

  1875. the lost,

  1876. the broken

  1877. and the

  1878. hurting

  1879. will find

  1880. a refuge

  1881. and a

  1882. place of

  1883. peace

  1884. amongst

  1885. your

  1886. people.

  1887. We pray

  1888. for your

  1889. Spirit to

  1890. be at

  1891. work and

  1892. we ask

  1893. it,

  1894. Lord,

  1895. for our

  1896. good and

  1897. for your

  1898. glory alone.

  1899. In

  1900. Jesus'

  1901. name,

  1902. Amen.

  1903. Amen.

  1904. Well,

  1905. we're going

  1906. to sing

  1907. together

  1908. one hymn

  1909. that

  1910. summarises

  1911. what we've

  1912. been thinking

  1913. about.

  1914. Great is

  1915. thy

  1916. faithfulness,

  1917. O God,

  1918. my Father.

  1919. He is the

  1920. faithful God.

  1921. If you know

  1922. this God,

  1923. then I

  1924. encourage you

  1925. to sing it

  1926. out to

  1927. encourage

  1928. those around

  1929. you.

  1930. Let's

  1931. stand

  1932. together

  1933. as we

  1934. sing.
