  1. Thank you.

  2. Well, if we could turn in our Bibles, please, to Genesis chapter 27.

    Genesis 27 chapter mention

  3. Genesis chapter 27, which is right at the beginning of the Bible.

    Genesis 27 chapter mention

  4. We've been looking at the life of Abraham, his family,

  5. and we've been looking in particular at his son Isaac and his sons, Isaac and Jacob.

  6. Or Jacob and Esau, rather.

  7. So we've got a long reading today.

  8. It's chapter 27, but it's very hard to just pick little bits out.

  9. It's something we've got to read together.

  10. So I've got a few helpers this morning.

  11. So if they could come up ready to jump in as we need to, that'll be great.

  12. So Genesis chapter 27, starting in verse 1 through to verse 45.

    Genesis 27 chapter mention

  13. So Genesis 27, starting at verse 1.

  14. When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see,

  15. he called for his elder son Esau and said to him,

  16. My son, here I am, he answered.

  17. Isaac said, I am now an old man and don't know the day of my death.

  18. Now then get your equipment, your quiver and bow,

  19. and go out into the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

  20. Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like,

  21. and bring it to me to eat,

  22. so that I may give you my blessing before I die.

  23. Now Rebecca was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau.

  24. When Esau left for the open country to hunt game and bring it back,

  25. Rebecca said to her son Jacob,

  26. Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau,

  27. Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat,

  28. so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.

  29. Now my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you.

  30. Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,

  31. so that I can prepare some tasty food for your father,

  32. just the way he likes it.

  33. Then take it to your father to eat,

  34. so that he may give you his blessing before he dies.

  35. Jacob said to Rebecca, his mother,

  36. But my brother Esau is a hairy man while I have smooth skin.

  37. What if my father touches me?

  38. I would appear to be tricking him

  39. and would bring down a curse on myself rather than a blessing.

  40. His mother said to him,

  41. My son, let the curse fall on me.

  42. Just do what I say, go and get them for me.

  43. So he went and got them and brought them to his mother,

  44. and she prepared some tasty food just the way his father liked it.

  45. Then Rebecca took the best clothes of her elder son Esau,

  46. which she had in the house,

  47. and put them on her younger son Jacob.

  48. She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goat skins.

  49. Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

  50. He went to his father and said,

  51. My father.

  52. Yes, my son, he answered.

  53. Who is it?

  54. Jacob said to his father,

  55. I am Esau, your firstborn.

  56. I have done as you told me.

  57. Please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may give me your blessing.

  58. Isaac asked his son,

  59. How did you find it so quickly, my son?

  60. The Lord your God gave me success, he replied.

  61. Then Isaac said to Jacob,

  62. Come near so I can touch you, my son,

  63. to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.

  64. Jacob went close to his father Isaac,

  65. who touched him and said,

  66. The voice is the voice of Jacob,

  67. but the hands are the hands of Esau.

  68. He did not recognize him,

  69. for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau,

  70. so he proceeded to bless him.

  71. Are you really my son Esau?

  72. he asked.

  73. I am, he replied.

  74. Then he said,

  75. My son, bring me some of your game to eat

  76. so that I may give you my blessing.

  77. Jacob brought it to him and he ate,

  78. and he brought some wine and he drank.

  79. Then his father Isaac said to him,

  80. Come here, my son, and kiss me.

  81. So he went to him and kissed him.

  82. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes,

  83. he blessed him and said,

  84. Ah, the smell of my son

  85. is like the smell of a field

  86. that the Lord has blessed.

  87. May God give you heaven's dew

  88. and earth's richness,

  89. an abundance of grain and new wine.

  90. May nations serve you

  91. and peoples bow down to you.

  92. Be Lord over your brothers

  93. and may the sons of your mother

  94. bow down to you.

  95. May those who curse you be cursed

  96. and those who bless you be blessed.

  97. After Isaac finished blessing him

  98. and Jacob had scarcely left

  99. his father's presence,

  100. his brother Esau came in from hunting.

  101. He too prepared some tasty food

  102. and brought it to his father.

  103. Then he said to him,

  104. My father, please sit up

  105. and eat some of my game

  106. so that you may give me your blessing.

  107. His father Isaac asked him,

  108. Who are you?

  109. I am your son, he answered,

  110. your firstborn, Esau.

  111. Isaac trembled violently and said,

  112. Who was it then that hunted game

  113. and brought it to me?

  114. I ate it just before you came

  115. and I blessed him

  116. and indeed he will be blessed.

  117. When Esau heard his father's words,

  118. he burst out with a loud and bitter cry

  119. and said to his father,

  120. Bless me, me too, my father.

  121. But he said,

  122. Your brother came deceitfully

  123. and took your blessing.

  124. Esau said,

  125. Isn't he rightly named Jacob?

  126. This is the second time

  127. he has taken advantage of me.

  128. He took my birthright

  129. and now he has taken my blessing.

  130. Then he asked,

  131. Haven't you reserved any blessing for me?

  132. Isaac answered Esau,

  133. I have made him lord over you

  134. and have made all his relatives his servants

  135. and I have sustained him with grain and new wine.

  136. So what can I possibly do for you, my son?

  137. Esau said to his father,

  138. Do you have only one blessing, my father?

  139. Bless me too, my father.

  140. Then Esau wept aloud.

  141. His father Isaac answered him,

  142. Your dwelling will be away from the earth's richness,

  143. away from the dew of heaven above.

  144. You will live by the sword

  145. and you will serve your brother.

  146. But when you grow restless,

  147. you will throw his yoke from off your neck.

  148. Esau held a grudge against Jacob

  149. because of the blessing his father had given him.

  150. He said to himself,

  151. The days of mourning for my father are near.

  152. Then I will kill my brother Jacob.

  153. When Rebecca was told what her older son Esau had said,

  154. she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him,

  155. Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.

  156. Now then, my son, do what I say.

  157. Flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran.

  158. Stay with him for a while until your brother's fury subsides.

  159. When your brother is no longer angry with you

  160. and forgets what you did to him,

  161. I'll send word for you to come back from there.

  162. Why should I lose both of you in one day?

  163. Thank you, Chris and Kirsty.

  164. Keep your Bibles open there at chapter 27.

  165. We're going to pray

  166. and ask for God's help.

  167. Father, teach us wonderful things in your word.

  168. Teach us so that our lives are changed and transformed.

  169. Teach us today by your spirit

  170. that it may be for our good,

  171. for our blessing.

  172. We need you.

  173. So please help in Jesus' name.

  174. Amen.

  175. Well, we've been looking together, haven't we,

  176. at the family of Abraham.

  177. You may say,

  178. well, is there not a better family we could study together?

  179. Well, the reason is

  180. God has a plan to redeem the world,

  181. to undo the curse

  182. and bring blessing,

  183. to bring humanity back into relationship with God.

  184. Now, this big plan of redemption

  185. is all being worked out

  186. through the chosen family of Abraham.

  187. God's big plan,

  188. but it's being enacted

  189. through the family of Abraham.

  190. From this family,

  191. God promised that a son was going to come,

  192. a son who would restore our disordered lives

  193. and renew this broken world.

  194. through this family,

  195. all the nations of the world

  196. were going to be blessed.

  197. So according to God's plan and promise,

  198. the blessing was passed from Abraham

  199. down to his son Isaac.

  200. And now Isaac,

  201. as we've just been reading,

  202. is getting old

  203. and must pass the blessing on to his son.

  204. You see,

  205. the family of Abraham are important.

  206. They're central to God's plan of redemption

  207. for the whole world.

  208. But what happens

  209. when this special chosen family

  210. don't want to play ball?

  211. What happens

  212. when this chosen family,

  213. instead of going with God's plan,

  214. actually start opposing God's plan?

  215. What's going to happen then?

  216. Well,

  217. that's what chapter 27

  218. is all about.

  219. Three things we're going to see

  220. from the text.

  221. Here's the first big one.

  222. God's plan

  223. is always opposed.

  224. God's plan is always opposed.

  225. His plan is to redeem the world,

  226. to bring humanity

  227. back into relationship with God.

  228. But it seems

  229. that humanity

  230. don't want to go along with it.

  231. People

  232. are opposed

  233. to God's plan.

  234. And we see this

  235. in the family

  236. of Isaac and Rebecca

  237. and their two sons,

  238. Jacob and Esau.

  239. We can see

  240. their opposition

  241. to God's plan

  242. in the deadly

  243. D's.

  244. D's.

  245. Here's four deadly D's.

  246. Here's the first one.

  247. Isaac

  248. disobeys

  249. God's word.

  250. He's getting old,

  251. he's nearing death,

  252. and he's getting ready

  253. to pass the blessing

  254. on to his son.

  255. And so in preparation,

  256. at the beginning of 27,

  257. he calls in his eldest son,

  258. Esau,

  259. verse 4,

  260. prepare me

  261. the kind of tasty food I like,

  262. bring it in to me to eat,

  263. that I may give you

  264. my blessing

  265. before I die.

  266. Seems normal enough,

  267. doesn't it?

  268. Except for one

  269. glaring fact.

  270. Before

  271. Jacob and Esau

  272. were ever born,

  273. God had revealed

  274. to Isaac and Rebecca

  275. that the blessing

  276. wasn't going to go

  277. to the eldest son,

  278. Esau,

  279. but it was going

  280. to the youngest son,

  281. Jacob.

  282. That would be like

  283. the crown

  284. bypassing

  285. William

  286. and going to

  287. Harry.

  288. Oh my goodness,

  289. you couldn't do that,

  290. could you?

  291. But this was

  292. God's choice.

  293. God was clear.

  294. The elder

  295. is going to serve

  296. the younger.

  297. But Isaac,

  298. oh no, no, no.

  299. Isaac has his own plans.

  300. He wants it

  301. to go to Esau,

  302. the son that he

  303. loved,

  304. the one who made

  305. special dinners

  306. and, well,

  307. he loved him.

  308. So secretly

  309. and without even

  310. telling his wife,

  311. he plans to give

  312. the blessing

  313. over to Esau.

  314. He knows

  315. what God has said,

  316. but he just

  317. chooses to disobey

  318. what God says.

  319. So there's Isaac

  320. and his disobedience.

  321. And then

  322. we've got

  323. Rebecca

  324. and her distrust

  325. of God's promises.

  326. It seems

  327. that Isaac's secret

  328. wasn't really

  329. a secret at all,

  330. was it?

  331. Look at verse 5.

  332. Because, well,

  333. just outside the bedroom,

  334. Rebecca was listening

  335. as Isaac spoke

  336. to his son Esau.

  337. She too knows

  338. what God had said,

  339. that the blessing

  340. would be passed

  341. to Jacob.

  342. But instead of

  343. dealing with it rightly,

  344. instead of trusting God

  345. with the way

  346. he would do things,

  347. she decides

  348. to take things

  349. into her own hands.

  350. She takes

  351. the place

  352. of God.

  353. To Rebecca,

  354. it just seems,

  355. well,

  356. God is just

  357. incapable

  358. of fulfilling

  359. his promises.

  360. He needs

  361. help.

  362. So Rebecca

  363. plays

  364. God

  365. herself.

  366. Her plan is

  367. to trick her husband

  368. and so she

  369. tells Jacob,

  370. look at verse 9,

  371. go out to the flock

  372. and bring me in

  373. two of your choice

  374. young goats

  375. so that I can prepare

  376. some tasty food

  377. for your father

  378. just the way he likes it.

  379. Then take it

  380. to your father to eat

  381. so that he may give you

  382. his blessing

  383. before he dies.

  384. She knows

  385. the promise.

  386. But she decides

  387. to distrust

  388. the promise.

  389. And then we've got

  390. Jacob.

  391. Well,

  392. Jacob deceives

  393. God's people,

  394. doesn't he?

  395. Rebecca's plan

  396. might be good.

  397. It seems to be

  398. pretty well thought out

  399. but has she

  400. forgotten something?

  401. Verse 11,

  402. Mum!

  403. Well,

  404. what about

  405. Esau?

  406. He's hairy.

  407. I've got

  408. smooth skin.

  409. What if my

  410. father touches me?

  411. I would appear

  412. to be tricking him

  413. and would bring

  414. down a curse

  415. on myself

  416. rather than

  417. a blessing.

  418. Don't worry,

  419. Jacob.

  420. I've got a plan

  421. for this one.

  422. You go off

  423. and dress in some

  424. of Esau's old

  425. smelly clothes.

  426. I'm going to take

  427. some of that goat skin.

  428. We're going to put it

  429. on your arms

  430. and on your neck

  431. and he's going to

  432. think you're Esau.

  433. Anyway,

  434. he can hardly see

  435. so he's never

  436. going to know

  437. anyway.

  438. So,

  439. verse 22,

  440. Jacob went

  441. close to his

  442. father Isaac

  443. who touched him

  444. and said,

  445. the voice is

  446. the voice of

  447. Jacob,

  448. but the hands

  449. they're hairy.

  450. They're the hands

  451. of Esau.

  452. He did not

  453. recognize him

  454. for his hands

  455. were hairy

  456. like those

  457. of his brother

  458. Esau,

  459. so he proceeded

  460. to bless him.

  461. Now,

  462. not for the

  463. first time,

  464. Isaac asks,

  465. are you

  466. really

  467. my son

  468. Esau?

  469. I am,

  470. he replied.

  471. Lies

  472. and deceit

  473. just drip

  474. from his mouth.

  475. Jacob

  476. was prepared

  477. to say

  478. whatever

  479. and do

  480. whatever

  481. just to get

  482. that blessing.

  483. He was

  484. a deceiver.

  485. And then

  486. we've got

  487. the other

  488. brother,

  489. Esau.

  490. Well,

  491. he

  492. despises

  493. God's

  494. blessing.

  495. It's quite

  496. the story,

  497. isn't it?

  498. No sooner

  499. has Jacob

  500. brought in

  501. his food

  502. and got

  503. the blessing

  504. and the

  505. dirty deed

  506. done,

  507. than he

  508. goes out

  509. and Esau

  510. arrives

  511. with his

  512. tasty food.

  513. But it's

  514. all too

  515. late,

  516. isn't it?

  517. His shock

  518. of being

  519. done over

  520. by his

  521. younger brother

  522. was clear

  523. for all

  524. to see

  525. and hear.

  526. He

  527. shouts

  528. out with

  529. a loud

  530. and bitter

  531. cry.

  532. He's

  533. distraught.

  534. Now,

  535. Esau

  536. might be

  537. angry,

  538. but let's

  539. not be

  540. fooled

  541. by Esau's

  542. tears.

  543. Remember

  544. back when

  545. these brothers

  546. were younger,

  547. Esau was

  548. hungry,

  549. and he

  550. handed over

  551. his birthright

  552. to Jacob

  553. for just a

  554. bowl of

  555. stew.

  556. The author

  557. actually records

  558. for us and

  559. tells us

  560. what was

  561. going on

  562. inside Esau's

  563. heart at that

  564. time.

  565. It tells

  566. us in

  567. 25

  568. verse 34,

  569. Esau

  570. despised

  571. his birthright.

  572. He might

  573. have lots

  574. of regrets,

  575. but deep

  576. down in

  577. his heart,

  578. Esau was

  579. despising

  580. God's

  581. blessing.

  582. What a

  583. mess.

  584. This is

  585. the family

  586. chosen by

  587. God,

  588. a special

  589. family,

  590. to bring

  591. redemption

  592. and blessing

  593. to the

  594. whole world,

  595. but this

  596. family is

  597. riddled

  598. with

  599. disobedience,

  600. distrust,

  601. deception,

  602. and despising.

  603. Rather than

  604. supporting the

  605. plan of God,

  606. they're opposing

  607. the plan of

  608. God.

  609. At least

  610. they're opposing

  611. the way God

  612. wants to do

  613. his work.

  614. And the

  615. consequences are

  616. disastrous.

  617. Isaac ends

  618. up being

  619. distressed,

  620. Esau is

  621. plotting to

  622. kill his

  623. brother,

  624. Jacob runs

  625. away in

  626. fear,

  627. and Rebecca,

  628. if we read

  629. on in the

  630. story,

  631. never ever

  632. gets to

  633. see her

  634. son again.

  635. What a

  636. mess.

  637. But let's

  638. not think we

  639. would do

  640. any better.

  641. The story

  642. of this

  643. family,

  644. well,

  645. it's like

  646. any Irish

  647. family,

  648. isn't it,

  649. really?

  650. in fact,

  651. it's the

  652. story of

  653. humanity.

  654. You see,

  655. we might

  656. all want

  657. redemption.

  658. We may

  659. want this

  660. world to

  661. be sorted,

  662. and we

  663. want things

  664. to change

  665. in our

  666. lives.

  667. We long

  668. for restoration

  669. and renewal,

  670. but you

  671. know what?

  672. God's got

  673. his plan,

  674. but let

  675. him tell

  676. me my

  677. plan.

  678. I want

  679. to do

  680. things my

  681. way.

  682. You see,

  683. this family,

  684. as disastrous

  685. as they

  686. are,

  687. are alive

  688. and well

  689. in each

  690. of our

  691. own hearts.

  692. Because

  693. don't we

  694. too,

  695. well,

  696. you know,

  697. I know

  698. what God's

  699. word says,

  700. but just

  701. sometimes I

  702. just choose

  703. to disobey

  704. what it

  705. says.

  706. And I

  707. know God

  708. has given

  709. us promises

  710. in his

  711. word,

  712. and he's

  713. promised to

  714. be with

  715. me,

  716. and he's

  717. promised to

  718. do this

  719. for me,

  720. and,

  721. well,

  722. you know,

  723. think about

  724. it.

  725. Sometimes he

  726. just doesn't

  727. quite deliver

  728. in the way

  729. I want him

  730. to,

  731. so I'll

  732. just do

  733. things my

  734. way.

  735. Or maybe

  736. we're just

  737. a bit like

  738. Jacob,

  739. and we

  740. think,

  741. well,

  742. maybe I

  743. can just

  744. kind of go

  745. in under

  746. the radar

  747. a little

  748. bit,

  749. and just

  750. give a

  751. little bit

  752. of pretense,

  753. and,

  754. well,

  755. God's not

  756. going to

  757. really know

  758. any difference,

  759. is he?

  760. I can

  761. deceive my

  762. way along.

  763. Or maybe

  764. we're just

  765. thinking,

  766. you know,

  767. I've been

  768. told all

  769. these stories

  770. about God

  771. and Jesus,

  772. and I've

  773. heard it

  774. so often,

  775. and,

  776. well,

  777. I think I

  778. can just

  779. live without

  780. it,

  781. and we

  782. despise

  783. the blessings

  784. that have

  785. been given

  786. to us.

  787. You see,

  788. the reality

  789. is we are

  790. a broken

  791. mess,

  792. due to

  793. our sinful

  794. decisions

  795. and selfish

  796. choices.

  797. And there's

  798. never any

  799. winners when

  800. we go against

  801. God's plan,

  802. when we

  803. decide we

  804. know best

  805. for ourselves.

  806. Going our

  807. way is only

  808. going to lead

  809. in one

  810. direction,

  811. more destruction,

  812. more disorder,

  813. more mess,

  814. and more

  815. chaos in the

  816. family.

  817. What's God

  818. going to do?

  819. His plan

  820. seems in

  821. tatters.

  822. This is the

  823. chosen family

  824. to bring

  825. redemption to

  826. the whole

  827. world.

  828. They're meant

  829. to be blessing

  830. the nations,

  831. but instead

  832. they're bringing

  833. curses on

  834. themselves.

  835. If God

  836. has a plan

  837. to redeem,

  838. well,

  839. he hasn't

  840. sought it out

  841. very well,

  842. because it's

  843. not going

  844. to plan,

  845. is it?

  846. What's

  847. God

  848. to do?

  849. Well,

  850. God's plan

  851. will always

  852. be opposed,

  853. but second,

  854. God's plan

  855. is going

  856. to be

  857. accomplished.

  858. You see,

  859. despite the

  860. mess of

  861. Isaac and

  862. Rebecca and

  863. their family,

  864. God's plan

  865. actually remains

  866. on track.

  867. Despite all

  868. the opposition

  869. and the

  870. deadly deeds,

  871. God's plan

  872. is going

  873. just as

  874. he says

  875. it would.

  876. Two big

  877. things we

  878. can learn

  879. here as

  880. we read

  881. between the

  882. lines of

  883. what's going

  884. on in

  885. this family.

  886. First,

  887. sin or

  888. rebellion

  889. can't

  890. frustrate

  891. God's

  892. plan.

  893. It can't

  894. frustrate

  895. God's

  896. plan.

  897. In all

  898. the plotting

  899. and all

  900. the scheming,

  901. God's plan

  902. can't be

  903. derailed.

  904. Just as

  905. God had

  906. said at

  907. the very

  908. beginning,

  909. the younger

  910. or the

  911. elder will

  912. serve the

  913. younger and

  914. Jacob will

  915. be blessed.

  916. And that's

  917. what happens.

  918. Look at

  919. verse 27.

  920. So when

  921. Jacob went

  922. to Isaac

  923. and kissed

  924. him,

  925. and Isaac

  926. caught the

  927. smell of

  928. his clothes

  929. and blessed

  930. him and

  931. said,

  932. Ah,

  933. the smell

  934. of my

  935. son.

  936. It's like

  937. the smell

  938. of a

  939. field that

  940. the Lord

  941. has blessed.

  942. Isaac

  943. thought at

  944. that moment

  945. he was

  946. giving the

  947. blessing to

  948. Esau.

  949. But no,

  950. God's

  951. plan wasn't

  952. going to

  953. be frustrated,

  954. it was

  955. going to

  956. Jacob.

  957. And so,

  958. end of

  959. verse 29,

  960. the blessing

  961. came,

  962. may those

  963. who curse

  964. you be

  965. cursed,

  966. and may

  967. those who

  968. bless you

  969. be blessed.

  970. And even

  971. when Esau

  972. pleads for

  973. his father,

  974. when he

  975. finds out

  976. about what's

  977. gone on,

  978. he goes

  979. to his

  980. father and

  981. pleads for

  982. somehow that

  983. he could

  984. get a

  985. blessing,

  986. that somehow

  987. things could

  988. be changed.

  989. What does

  990. Isaac say,

  991. verse 37?

  992. I have

  993. made him

  994. Lord over

  995. you and

  996. have made

  997. all his

  998. relatives his

  999. servants,

  1000. and I

  1001. have sustained

  1002. him with

  1003. grain and

  1004. new wine,

  1005. so what

  1006. can I

  1007. possibly do

  1008. for you,

  1009. my son?

  1010. You see,

  1011. God's plan

  1012. can't be

  1013. frustrated.

  1014. Sinful

  1015. humanity

  1016. can never

  1017. halt or

  1018. hinder the

  1019. purposes of

  1020. God.

  1021. Well, not

  1022. only doesn't

  1023. sin frustrate

  1024. God's plan,

  1025. something bigger

  1026. happens.

  1027. Sin only

  1028. fulfills

  1029. God's plan.

  1030. God uses

  1031. sinful

  1032. behaviours

  1033. to accomplish

  1034. his plan.

  1035. Now, this

  1036. doesn't mean to

  1037. say that God

  1038. takes part

  1039. in sin,

  1040. or that God

  1041. is turning a

  1042. blind eye

  1043. to sin.

  1044. No, God

  1045. is pure

  1046. and holy.

  1047. He cannot

  1048. tolerate it.

  1049. In fact,

  1050. he's going to

  1051. hold the

  1052. whole world

  1053. to account.

  1054. However,

  1055. God is

  1056. sovereign

  1057. over sin.

  1058. He's

  1059. sovereign

  1060. over evil,

  1061. and he

  1062. works all

  1063. of it

  1064. for his

  1065. good

  1066. purposes.

  1067. You see,

  1068. Isaac and

  1069. Esau

  1070. disobey and

  1071. despise God.

  1072. Rebecca and

  1073. Jacob may

  1074. distrust and

  1075. seek to

  1076. deceive God.

  1077. They're all

  1078. acting in

  1079. selfish ways,

  1080. but God

  1081. uses their

  1082. schemes to

  1083. achieve his

  1084. very purposes.

  1085. The promises

  1086. of blessing

  1087. are being

  1088. passed down

  1089. to Jacob,

  1090. just as God

  1091. had said,

  1092. so that the

  1093. nations of the

  1094. world would

  1095. be blessed.

  1096. Christ.

  1097. Now,

  1098. this is

  1099. true,

  1100. not just

  1101. in the

  1102. grand

  1103. redemption

  1104. scale,

  1105. but it's

  1106. also true

  1107. in each

  1108. of our

  1109. own

  1110. individual

  1111. lives.

  1112. Maybe

  1113. you've

  1114. been involved

  1115. in some

  1116. sin,

  1117. or you're

  1118. just aware

  1119. of it,

  1120. and you

  1121. think,

  1122. that's it,

  1123. end of

  1124. story,

  1125. that's put

  1126. up a

  1127. barrier,

  1128. God can

  1129. do no

  1130. more work

  1131. in my

  1132. life.

  1133. Or maybe

  1134. you've

  1135. been on

  1136. the receiving

  1137. end of

  1138. somebody's

  1139. sin or

  1140. behaviour

  1141. towards you

  1142. that's

  1143. changed your

  1144. life or

  1145. your

  1146. circumstances,

  1147. and you

  1148. think,

  1149. the plan,

  1150. God's

  1151. plan,

  1152. it's

  1153. ruined.

  1154. They've

  1155. wrecked it.

  1156. Well,

  1157. you know

  1158. what,

  1159. there's

  1160. nothing we

  1161. can say

  1162. or do,

  1163. and there's

  1164. nothing that

  1165. can ever

  1166. happen to

  1167. us by

  1168. anybody

  1169. else that

  1170. will

  1171. frustrate

  1172. or derail

  1173. God's

  1174. purposes

  1175. and plans

  1176. for your

  1177. life.

  1178. God is

  1179. sovereign

  1180. over every

  1181. single

  1182. detail.

  1183. God

  1184. doesn't

  1185. do

  1186. mistakes,

  1187. as one

  1188. writer put

  1189. it.

  1190. Sorry,

  1191. you'll just

  1192. have to,

  1193. whoops,

  1194. just listen

  1195. here, I

  1196. don't have

  1197. it there,

  1198. but listen

  1199. to this.

  1200. God is

  1201. not just

  1202. sovereign

  1203. over your

  1204. best deeds,

  1205. he is

  1206. sovereign over

  1207. the darkest,

  1208. most selfish,

  1209. and most

  1210. destructive

  1211. acts that

  1212. you will

  1213. ever commit

  1214. or that

  1215. others will

  1216. ever commit

  1217. against you

  1218. and he

  1219. will use

  1220. these to

  1221. accomplish

  1222. his good

  1223. and perfect

  1224. will in

  1225. your life.

  1226. So God

  1227. overrules

  1228. our rebellion,

  1229. he even

  1230. uses our

  1231. rebellion

  1232. to accomplish

  1233. his plan.

  1234. Isaac and

  1235. Rebecca,

  1236. Jacob and

  1237. Esau,

  1238. they may

  1239. stand

  1240. opposed to

  1241. God's

  1242. plan,

  1243. they may

  1244. stand

  1245. opposed to

  1246. how God

  1247. works,

  1248. but nothing

  1249. and no one

  1250. is going to

  1251. hinder what

  1252. God has said

  1253. he is going

  1254. to do.

  1255. His plan

  1256. is going to

  1257. be accomplished.

  1258. Now that's

  1259. good news for

  1260. us.

  1261. It's good news

  1262. for our

  1263. church,

  1264. because people

  1265. are opposed

  1266. to God's

  1267. plan,

  1268. people are

  1269. opposed to

  1270. the gospel,

  1271. but nothing

  1272. is ever going

  1273. to hinder

  1274. what God

  1275. has said

  1276. he is going

  1277. to do

  1278. through his

  1279. people and

  1280. through his

  1281. church.

  1282. He will

  1283. build it

  1284. and nothing

  1285. will stand

  1286. against it.

  1287. This is

  1288. good news,

  1289. because we

  1290. also are

  1291. in need

  1292. of redemption.

  1293. So God's

  1294. plan is

  1295. opposed,

  1296. God's

  1297. plan will

  1298. be

  1299. accomplished,

  1300. and then

  1301. third,

  1302. God's

  1303. plan

  1304. achieves

  1305. our

  1306. redemption.

  1307. You see,

  1308. God doesn't

  1309. give up on

  1310. sinful humanity.

  1311. We look at

  1312. a family like

  1313. this and we

  1314. go,

  1315. right,

  1316. that's it,

  1317. write it all

  1318. off,

  1319. that's the

  1320. end of

  1321. humanity.

  1322. In fact,

  1323. God works

  1324. in spite of

  1325. our sin

  1326. and through

  1327. our sin

  1328. to achieve

  1329. what he

  1330. wants to

  1331. do.

  1332. And we

  1333. see this

  1334. being worked

  1335. out in

  1336. God's

  1337. ultimate

  1338. promised

  1339. son,

  1340. who comes

  1341. down through

  1342. the family

  1343. of Abraham,

  1344. from Isaac

  1345. to Jacob

  1346. and so on,

  1347. till we

  1348. come to

  1349. his ultimate

  1350. son,

  1351. Jesus

  1352. Christ.

  1353. The son

  1354. who was

  1355. unlike

  1356. this family,

  1357. who obeyed

  1358. God's word

  1359. and trusted

  1360. God's word,

  1361. the true

  1362. son who

  1363. came to

  1364. bring blessing

  1365. to all

  1366. nations.

  1367. nations.

  1368. Have a

  1369. look with

  1370. me,

  1371. please,

  1372. in Acts.

  1373. Go to

  1374. Acts chapter

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1375. 2.

  1376. Here the

  1377. apostle Peter

  1378. is preaching

  1379. to a

  1380. gathering

  1381. that includes

  1382. what,

  1383. guess what,

  1384. nations

  1385. from all

  1386. around the

  1387. world.

  1388. People from

  1389. all kinds of

  1390. different countries

  1391. have gathered,

  1392. it's Pentecost,

  1393. they've come

  1394. into Jerusalem

  1395. and Peter

  1396. has an

  1397. audience of

  1398. all these

  1399. different

  1400. nationalities.

  1401. And his

  1402. message is

  1403. all about

  1404. the redemption

  1405. of Jesus

  1406. Christ.

  1407. Now look

  1408. at what he

  1409. says about

  1410. Jesus'

  1411. death.

  1412. We're going

  1413. to pick it

  1414. up in

  1415. verse 22.

  1416. fellow

  1417. Israelites,

  1418. listen to

  1419. this.

  1420. Jesus of

  1421. Nazareth

  1422. was a

  1423. man accredited

  1424. by God

  1425. to you by

  1426. miracles,

  1427. wonders and

  1428. signs which

  1429. God did

  1430. among you

  1431. through him

  1432. as you

  1433. yourselves

  1434. know.

  1435. This man

  1436. was handed

  1437. over to

  1438. you by

  1439. God's

  1440. deliberate

  1441. plan and

  1442. foreknowledge

  1443. and you

  1444. with the

  1445. help of

  1446. wicked men

  1447. put him

  1448. to death

  1449. by nailing

  1450. him to

  1451. a cross.

  1452. But God

  1453. raised him

  1454. from the

  1455. dead,

  1456. freeing him

  1457. from the

  1458. agony of

  1459. death because

  1460. it was

  1461. impossible for

  1462. death to

  1463. keep its

  1464. hold on

  1465. him.

  1466. Now can

  1467. you see

  1468. the rebellion

  1469. and the

  1470. opposition

  1471. and the

  1472. sin of the

  1473. people here

  1474. in these

  1475. verses?

  1476. Do you

  1477. see it

  1478. there?

  1479. Wicked

  1480. men

  1481. put him

  1482. to death.

  1483. That's how

  1484. the death

  1485. of Jesus

  1486. is described.

  1487. Wicked

  1488. men

  1489. put him

  1490. to death.

  1491. Disobedient,

  1492. distrusting,

  1493. deceiving,

  1494. despising people,

  1495. opposed God,

  1496. turned against

  1497. his son and

  1498. they crucified

  1499. him.

  1500. But this

  1501. was God's

  1502. plan.

  1503. verse 23.

  1504. This man

  1505. was handed

  1506. over to

  1507. you by

  1508. God's

  1509. deliberate

  1510. plan and

  1511. foreknowledge

  1512. and you

  1513. with the

  1514. help of

  1515. wicked men

  1516. put him

  1517. to death.

  1518. You see,

  1519. God's

  1520. plan can't

  1521. be derailed.

  1522. It was

  1523. God's plan

  1524. that his

  1525. son would

  1526. die,

  1527. that Jesus

  1528. would come

  1529. to redeem

  1530. us from

  1531. the brokenness

  1532. and disorder

  1533. of our

  1534. lives.

  1535. He comes

  1536. to families

  1537. like you

  1538. and I.

  1539. He becomes

  1540. our sin.

  1541. He's treated

  1542. as disobedient,

  1543. as distrusting,

  1544. as deceiving

  1545. and despising

  1546. on the cross.

  1547. He's punished.

  1548. The curse

  1549. that should

  1550. fall on us

  1551. falls on him

  1552. so that we

  1553. might receive

  1554. the promises

  1555. of blessing.

  1556. God

  1557. overrules

  1558. all the

  1559. rebellion

  1560. and uses

  1561. all the

  1562. rebellion

  1563. to achieve

  1564. our

  1565. redemption.

  1566. You see,

  1567. God is

  1568. sovereign

  1569. over the

  1570. darkest,

  1571. most selfish

  1572. and most

  1573. destructive

  1574. acts that

  1575. anyone could

  1576. ever commit

  1577. against God.

  1578. He uses

  1579. the betrayal

  1580. and the

  1581. hatred,

  1582. the thorns

  1583. and the

  1584. crowns to

  1585. do what

  1586. he set

  1587. out to

  1588. do.

  1589. God's

  1590. plan

  1591. cannot be

  1592. frustrated

  1593. by our

  1594. sin.

  1595. In fact,

  1596. it is

  1597. being

  1598. fulfilled

  1599. through

  1600. our

  1601. sin.

  1602. How are

  1603. we to

  1604. respond

  1605. to such

  1606. a good

  1607. and gracious

  1608. God as

  1609. this?

  1610. Well,

  1611. flick over

  1612. the page,

  1613. Acts chapter

    Acts 2:37

  1614. 2,

  1615. verse

  1616. 37.

  1617. Verse

  1618. 37,

  1619. When the

  1620. people heard

  1621. this,

  1622. they were

  1623. cut to

  1624. the heart

  1625. and they

  1626. said to

  1627. Peter and

  1628. the other

  1629. apostles,

  1630. brothers,

  1631. what shall

  1632. we do?

  1633. What shall

  1634. we do

  1635. with all

  1636. our mess

  1637. and brokenness

  1638. and our

  1639. life of

  1640. sin?

  1641. Peter replied,

  1642. repent and

  1643. be baptized

  1644. every one of

  1645. you in the

  1646. name of

  1647. Jesus Christ

  1648. for the

  1649. forgiveness

  1650. of your

  1651. sins and

  1652. you will

  1653. receive the

  1654. gift of

  1655. the Holy

  1656. Spirit.

  1657. It's a

  1658. command to

  1659. repent.

  1660. to turn

  1661. and as a

  1662. visible

  1663. demonstration

  1664. of your

  1665. heart's

  1666. response,

  1667. be

  1668. baptized.

  1669. This is

  1670. what God

  1671. is saying

  1672. to us.

  1673. So how

  1674. are you

  1675. going to

  1676. respond to

  1677. what his

  1678. word is

  1679. saying?

  1680. Well,

  1681. maybe you

  1682. just think,

  1683. well,

  1684. I know

  1685. what it

  1686. says,

  1687. but I'm

  1688. going to

  1689. choose to

  1690. disobey

  1691. what it

  1692. says.

  1693. Oh,

  1694. I hear

  1695. the promise

  1696. that there

  1697. will be

  1698. forgiveness

  1699. and the

  1700. gift of

  1701. the Holy

  1702. Spirit,

  1703. but you

  1704. know what,

  1705. I think I

  1706. can do

  1707. things better

  1708. my way.

  1709. Or maybe

  1710. we think,

  1711. you know,

  1712. all this

  1713. business of

  1714. repenting and

  1715. following God,

  1716. I can just

  1717. get in under

  1718. the radar and

  1719. just do what

  1720. needs to be

  1721. done and,

  1722. well,

  1723. people won't

  1724. make any

  1725. difference and

  1726. maybe God

  1727. won't see any

  1728. difference either

  1729. and I'll be

  1730. okay.

  1731. Or maybe

  1732. it's a case of

  1733. just hearing the

  1734. same message

  1735. over and over

  1736. and over again

  1737. and go,

  1738. no,

  1739. not for me.

  1740. I really

  1741. think I can

  1742. do it myself.

  1743. What's our

  1744. response?

  1745. Whether this

  1746. is the first

  1747. time we're

  1748. ever confronted

  1749. with repentance

  1750. or there's

  1751. stuff in our

  1752. life personally

  1753. or within our

  1754. families that

  1755. we're just

  1756. ignoring and

  1757. not dealing

  1758. with,

  1759. what's our

  1760. response going

  1761. to be?

  1762. Well,

  1763. go with me

  1764. please to

  1765. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1766. 12,

  1767. because this

  1768. family that

  1769. we've been

  1770. looking at

  1771. is a

  1772. warning to

  1773. us.

  1774. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1775. 12.

  1776. As we

  1777. think about

  1778. our response

  1779. to God's

  1780. gift of

  1781. redemption,

  1782. his call to

  1783. repentance,

  1784. to deal

  1785. with things

  1786. in our life

  1787. that need to

  1788. be dealt

  1789. with or

  1790. perhaps we're

  1791. ignoring,

  1792. let the

  1793. weight of

  1794. Esau's

  1795. response

  1796. be heard

  1797. to us

  1798. today.

  1799. Hebrews 12

    Hebrews 12:16

  1800. verse 16.

  1801. See that

  1802. no one,

  1803. not one of

  1804. us is

  1805. sexually or

  1806. moral or

  1807. is godless

  1808. like Esau.

  1809. well,

  1810. we've just

  1811. been looking

  1812. at him,

  1813. haven't we,

  1814. who for a

  1815. single meal

  1816. sold his

  1817. inheritance rights

  1818. as the

  1819. oldest brother.

  1820. Afterwards,

  1821. as you know,

  1822. and we do

  1823. know because

  1824. we've just

  1825. read it,

  1826. when he

  1827. wanted to

  1828. inherit this

  1829. blessing,

  1830. he was

  1831. rejected.

  1832. Even

  1833. though he

  1834. sought the

  1835. blessing with

  1836. tears,

  1837. he could

  1838. not change

  1839. what he

  1840. had done.

  1841. You see,

  1842. the time

  1843. will come

  1844. when the

  1845. opportunity

  1846. to change

  1847. will have

  1848. passed us

  1849. by.

  1850. And maybe

  1851. you're here

  1852. this morning

  1853. and you've

  1854. never done

  1855. business with

  1856. God,

  1857. you've heard

  1858. it,

  1859. but you've

  1860. never ever

  1861. repented.

  1862. you've

  1863. never dealt

  1864. with the

  1865. issues.

  1866. Or maybe

  1867. there's sinful

  1868. behaviour and

  1869. habits in

  1870. your own

  1871. life,

  1872. stuff in

  1873. my life I

  1874. need to

  1875. pay attention

  1876. to,

  1877. maybe things

  1878. going on in

  1879. your own

  1880. family that's

  1881. never been

  1882. worked through.

  1883. Don't

  1884. despise

  1885. the blessing

  1886. that God

  1887. is giving

  1888. you through

  1889. forgiveness.

  1890. and the

  1891. gift of

  1892. his spirit

  1893. and the

  1894. wonderful

  1895. offer of

  1896. redemption.

  1897. Time is

  1898. short.

  1899. Time

  1900. might pass

  1901. you by.

  1902. Don't be

  1903. like Esau.

  1904. Turn to

  1905. God

  1906. in repentance

  1907. and deal

  1908. with what

  1909. needs to be

  1910. dealt with.

  1911. let's

  1912. pray.

  1913. Want to

  1914. know what

  1915. a rebellious

  1916. sinner looks

1917. like? Stand in front of the mirror. Father, your word has been a mirror to us today, helping

1918. us to see how we can so easily and subtly disobey, distrust, deceive others, despise

1919. the good gifts that you give us. We humbly come before you and say sorry. Sorry for our sin.

1920. Sorry for our failure. Please work in us what is good and right and help us that we may come

1921. running back to Jesus time and time again. Father, help us to deal with things in our own

1922. life, things within our families, sin between husband and wife, parents and children, that

1923. we would not let these things just drift by, but that we would take time to deal with it

1924. because we know that opposing your ways will only end in further mess, further destruction

1925. and chaos. We need your peace. We need your grace. And we thank you that that blessing is available

1926. to us today. Help us, Lord, we ask. In Jesus' name. Amen.

1927. Amen. We're going to sing the wondrous mystery that God could work despite our sin and through

1928. our sin to achieve his purposes in our life, our redemption. Let's stand together as we sing

  1929. this.

  1930. Amen.

  1931. Amen.

  1932. Amen.
