  1. So our reading this morning is Genesis chapter 29, and we're going to be reading verses 1

    Genesis 29 chapter mention

  2. to 30 as we continue our studies looking at the life of Jacob and all that we can learn

  3. from him and his God. So Louise and Kirsty are going to read this morning. Thank you.

  4. Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples. Then he

  5. saw a well in the open country with three flocks of sheep lying near it, because the flocks

  6. were watered from that well. The stone over the mouth of the well was large. When all

  7. the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone away from the well's

  8. mouth and water the sheep. Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth

  9. of the well. Jacob asked his shepherds, My brothers, where are you from? We're from Haran, they

  10. replied. He said to them, Do you know Laban, Nahar's grandson? Yes, we know him, they answered.

  11. Then Jacob asked them, Is he well? Yes, he is, they said. And here comes his daughter Rachel

  12. with the sheep. Look, he said, the sun is still high, and it is not time for the flocks to be

  13. gathered. Water the sheep and then take them back to pasture. We can't, they replied, until

  14. all the flocks have been gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the

  15. well. Then we will water the sheep. While he was still talking with them, Rachel came

  16. with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherd. When Jacob saw Rachel's daughter of his uncle

  17. Laban and Laban's sheep, he went over and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and

  18. watered his uncle's sheep. Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep aloud. He had told

  19. Rachel that he was a relative of her father and a son of Rebekah. So she ran and told her

  20. father. As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister's son, he hurried to meet

  21. him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his home. And there Jacob told him all

  22. these things. Then Laban said to him, you are my own flesh and blood.

  23. After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month, Laban said to him, just because you

  24. are a relative of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages should

  25. be. Now Laban had two daughters. The name of the elder was one Leah and the name of the

  26. younger was Rachel. Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel had a lovely figure and was beautiful.

  27. Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, I'll work for you seven years in return for your younger

  28. daughter, Rachel. Laban said, it's better that I give her to you than to some other man.

  29. Stay here with me. So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few

  30. days to him because of his love for her. Then Jacob said to Laban, give me my wife. My time

  31. is completed and I want to make love to her. So Laban brought together all the people of the

  32. place and gave a feast. But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to

  33. Jacob. And Jacob made love to her. And Laban gave his servant Zilpah to his daughter as her

  34. attendant. When morning came, there was Leah. So Jacob said to Laban, what is this you have

  35. done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn't I? Why have you deceived me? Laban replied, it

  36. is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the elder one. Finish this

  37. daughter's bridal week. Then we will give you the younger one also in return for another seven

  38. years of work. And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah and then Laban gave him his daughter

  39. Rachel to be his wife. Laban gave his servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her attendant.

  40. Jacob made love to Rachel also and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah.

  41. And he worked for Laban another seven years.

  42. Thanks very much, Louise and Kirsty. Let's keep our Bibles open. As we look at this

  43. account together, we're going to pray and ask for God's help. So let's do that now.

  44. Father, again, we thank you for your word. Thank you for its truthfulness. Thank you for its

  45. honesty. And we pray that your word would search our hearts so that we would respond as we should

  46. in a way that is filled with humility and honours you. Father, would you change us this morning

  47. to be a people who are dependent on you for all things? Amen.

  48. Well, Jacob is on the run, isn't he? Having deceived his father and cheated his brother, he's running for

  49. his life. And when we think Jacob is down and out, God in his kindness intervenes. If you go back to

  50. chapter 28, God meets Jacob in a vision, in a dream, and he shows him grace and promises Jacob his presence.

  51. And so with this great vision, Jacob is on a spiritual high. Look at chapter 28, verse 16.

  52. When Jacob woke from his sleep, he thought, surely the Lord is in this place, and I wasn't aware of it.

  53. He was afraid and said, how awesome is this place. This is none other than the house of God. This is the gate

  54. of heaven. And he called it Bethel, which means house of God. So this great experience that he's had

  55. with God has given Jacob a renewed encouragement and hope. And so chapter 29, verse 1,

  56. Jacob continued on, Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples. We can see him

  57. there brightly, jumping along as he walks his journey, perhaps singing a song. His mercy is more.

  58. My sins, they are many. His mercy is more.

  59. Well, it seems like we have a new Jacob. God's grace offers him a new beginning and a fresh start. He's a new man.

  60. Well, not so fast. Jacob may have made great progress in his journey, but it seems that change

  61. is a slow process. Like Jacob will see that we need to learn that as we journey through life, we are always in need

  62. of God's grace. We never move on from grace. You see, pride is never far from us, and pride trips us up.

  63. We have this natural disposition to go it alone in life, which will only lead to disaster.

  64. Sadly, that's what we're going to see this morning. Three things that cause us to fall

  65. and show us our desperate need of grace.

  66. First, tempted by desire. The story begins, doesn't it, with Jacob at a well. And it seems we're to note a particular detail

  67. about this well. We see it at the end of verse 2. The stone over the mouth of the well was large. It was a very heavy stone.

  68. So heavy, in fact, verse 3, that when all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone away from the well's mouth and water the sheep.

  69. So it took a communal effort. This wasn't a one-man job. All the shepherds would push the stone away.

  70. Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.

  71. What's with this heavy stone?

  72. Well, Jacob gets chatting with some of the shepherds who've gathered there, and to his delight,

  73. they seem to know his uncle Laban, his mother's brother.

  74. But it seems he's more interested in why all the shepherds are hanging around the well.

  75. Why is nobody moving this great big stone?

  76. Verse 8.

  77. We can't, they replied.

  78. Until all the flocks are gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well,

  79. then we will water the sheep.

  80. Who could they possibly be waiting for?

  81. Ah, verse 9.

  82. While he was still talking with them,

  83. Rachel came with her father's sheep,

  84. for she was a shepherd.

  85. They're waiting for Rachel.

  86. And as we discover in verse 17,

  87. Rachel has a lovely figure and was beautiful.

  88. It seems the testosterone levels were hitting 90 at the well.

  89. It's what I observe when I go to the gym.

  90. It might look like it, but I do go, yes.

  91. And all the lads are there posing in front of the mirror,

  92. flexing their pecs.

  93. And they're hovering, waiting for some young damsel

  94. who needs help manoeuvring some weights.

  95. Well, it seems something similar is happening down at the well.

  96. They all know that Rachel is going to be arriving soon,

  97. but there's no way she's going to move that stone.

  98. Opportunity arises, perhaps to earn a date night.

  99. Jacob has been observing, verse 10,

  100. when Jacob saw Rachel, daughter of his uncle Laban,

  101. and Laban's sheep.

  102. He went over and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well

  103. and watered his uncle's sheep.

  104. This was meant to be done by many,

  105. but here he is, he man himself,

  106. a demonstration of great strength.

  107. What's going on?

  108. Well, back at Bethel,

  109. where Jacob had had his vision and dream

  110. and his encounter with God,

  111. remember God had promised him

  112. that he would be a great nation

  113. and that he would have a great land.

  114. So when Jacob puts his eyes on Rachel

  115. and when he sees the sheep,

  116. he sees nation and land.

  117. Someone who's going to give him children

  118. and someone who has property.

  119. Now's his chance.

  120. He seizes the opportunity.

  121. He steps up and with all his strength,

  122. he moves that stone.

  123. I'm going to have my nation

  124. and I'm going to have my land.

  125. Jacob sees and he wants.

  126. He's tempted by desire.

  127. You see, we all have desires, don't we?

  128. We're all shaped and motivated by what we want.

  129. Desires drive our choices and decisions.

  130. It might not be a nation and a land,

  131. but it might be a desire for a partner and a career.

  132. Or it might be that we so want

  133. a home of our own or a better pension.

  134. We set our eyes on what we want

  135. and we will do whatever is required

  136. to get what we want.

  137. You see, Jacob has a history of seeing and wanting.

  138. He saw his brother's blessing and he took it.

  139. He sees Rachel and sheep and he's after it.

  140. But God's blessings are not to be taken.

  141. They are to be received.

  142. God's promises are not to be forced,

  143. but to be trusted.

  144. They are always given by grace

  145. and received by faith.

  146. You would hope that Jacob has learned,

  147. but it seems that change is slow.

  148. And we need to be careful.

  149. Desires that go unchecked are dangerous.

  150. Paul's words to a young Timothy are helpful here.

  151. You can read it on the screen.

  152. Those who want to get rich

  153. fall into temptation and a trap

  154. and into many foolish and harmful desires

  155. that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

  156. So let's ask ourselves the question,

  157. what is it that you want?

  158. What have you set your eyes on

  159. that is controlling you

  160. and consuming you?

  161. Look at that verse again.

  162. Those who want,

  163. you fill in the blank for yourself.

  164. Those who want

  165. fall into temptation and a trap

  166. and into many foolish and harmful desires

  167. that plunge people

  168. into ruin and destruction.

  169. Be careful.

  170. Jacob saw and wanted,

  171. and as we will see,

  172. it plunged him into a very destructive life.

  173. So as we journey through life,

  174. be careful about being tempted by desire.

  175. We are always in need of grace.

  176. So, tempted by desire.

  177. Second, blinded by love.

  178. The story deepens as Jacob meets Laban.

  179. In fact, it becomes very clear to us

  180. that Jacob doesn't tell the whole story

  181. and Laban doesn't disclose all the story either.

  182. After all the greetings in verse 13,

  183. Laban embraced Jacob and kissed him

  184. and brought him to his home

  185. and there Jacob told him all these things.

  186. Now, we're not given any detail.

  187. It's just kind of like all these things.

  188. You get the impression that

  189. Jacob isn't telling the whole story here.

  190. He's just telling them the bits he wants them to hear.

  191. I mean, would Laban really have been so happy

  192. if he knew the mess Jacob had left behind?

  193. Would he want that kind of character

  194. hanging around his daughters?

  195. Well, it seems Jacob's careful deception

  196. has been working.

  197. Look at verse 14.

  198. Then Laban said to him,

  199. You are my own flesh and blood.

  200. You're in the family now.

  201. You're one of us.

  202. It seems being economic with the truth

  203. can be rather prosperous.

  204. It's a bit like altering your grades on your CV

  205. or misleading with details of experience.

  206. Rather than be truthful and trust God,

  207. we find it more advantageous to deceive

  208. so we get what we want.

  209. Let's make no mistake.

  210. Jacob is ruthless.

  211. He sees what he wants

  212. and he's going to get it.

  213. Look at verse 15.

  214. Laban said to him,

  215. Just because you are a relative of mine,

  216. should you work for me for nothing,

  217. tell me what your wages should be.

  218. Well, Laban had two daughters.

  219. The name of the elder one was Leah.

  220. The name of the younger was Rachel.

  221. Leah had weak eyes

  222. or soft and tender eyes.

  223. They were soft, compassionate eyes.

  224. But that's as far as it went.

  225. Rachel had a lovely figure

  226. and was beautiful.

  227. Jacob was in love with Rachel

  228. and he said,

  229. I'll work for you seven years

  230. in return for your younger daughter, Rachel.

  231. Now it all seems kind of quite normal, doesn't it?

  232. Jacob is in love with this girl, Rachel,

  233. and well, he's going to do whatever it takes.

  234. He'll work seven hard years.

  235. But isn't this just Jacob pursuing his own agenda?

  236. Doesn't it strike you that God doesn't enter into the equation?

  237. We don't find Jacob here reading his Bible

  238. and praying about it.

  239. He doesn't take time out to ask some wiser grey beard,

  240. what should I do?

  241. He's blinded by love.

  242. Verse 20.

  243. So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel

  244. but they seemed like only a few days to him

  245. because of his love for her.

  246. Now you may think that there's something familiar

  247. about this story of Jacob

  248. because it's very similar

  249. to a parallel story

  250. of his own father Isaac.

  251. If you go back to chapter 24 with me,

  252. we'll see there that Jacob,

  253. Jacob's father Isaac,

  254. has no wife

  255. and his father Abraham

  256. sends his servant off to his people

  257. to find a suitable partner.

  258. But what I want us to see here is

  259. just look at the God involvement in this.

  260. We're going to pick it up in verse 12,

  261. chapter 24, verse 12.

  262. So the servant is going out

  263. to look for a wife for Isaac

  264. and just look at the God involvement.

  265. Then he prayed,

  266. Lord God of my master Abraham,

  267. make me successful today

  268. and show kindness to my master Abraham.

  269. See, I am standing beside this spring

  270. and the daughters of the townspeople

  271. are coming out to draw water.

  272. May it be that when I say to a young woman,

  273. please let down your jar

  274. that I may have a drink.

  275. And she says,

  276. drink and I'll water your camels too.

  277. Let her be the one

  278. you have chosen for your servant Isaac.

  279. By this,

  280. I will know

  281. that you have shown kindness

  282. to my master.

  283. And sure enough,

  284. he meets Rebecca.

  285. She does everything

  286. the servant had prayed about.

  287. And when the servant then

  288. recounts the whole story

  289. back to Rebecca's brother,

  290. the same Laban as we're looking at,

  291. and to her father,

  292. look at verse 50.

  293. Verse 50,

  294. Laban and Bethuel answered,

  295. this is from the Lord.

  296. We can say nothing to you

  297. one way or the other.

  298. Here is Rebecca.

  299. Take her and go

  300. and let her become

  301. the wife of your master son

  302. as the Lord directed.

  303. You see,

  304. in this whole account,

  305. there's a humble dependence

  306. on God.

  307. They're praying.

  308. They're talking.

  309. They're committing it all to God.

  310. You get the clear impression

  311. that they don't trust

  312. their own hearts.

  313. They're trusting God.

  314. Now let's go back

  315. to chapter 29.

  316. Do you see the difference?

  317. Jacob can't even muster

  318. a God,

  319. please help me here

  320. as I make a decision.

  321. He just dives straight in,

  322. blinded by love.

  323. Jacob is doing life his way,

  324. trying to secure

  325. the blessings of God

  326. by his own initiative.

  327. Now we too

  328. can be blinded by love.

  329. Young people,

  330. wakey, wakey,

  331. listen up.

  332. Of course,

  333. it might be love for you,

  334. love for a young man

  335. or a young woman.

  336. We see

  337. and we want.

  338. We don't bother

  339. to inquire of

  340. what's their Christian faith?

  341. What's their commitment

  342. to the local church like?

  343. Do they give to mission?

  344. Are they devoted

  345. to learn from God's word?

  346. We just like what we see.

  347. I mean,

  348. I always knows best.

  349. It seems that

  350. beautiful figures

  351. are more important

  352. than godly character.

  353. And successful careers

  354. are more important

  355. than a servant heart.

  356. but for maybe

  357. others of us,

  358. it's other loves

  359. that have blinded us.

  360. Love for a job

  361. or

  362. love for your hobby.

  363. Love for a comfortable

  364. and easy life.

  365. Love for money.

  366. Love for popularity.

  367. Love for

  368. what's

  369. what's your love?

  370. love for God.

  371. You see,

  372. our pursuit

  373. of these things

  374. can just

  375. blind us

  376. to our true

  377. love for God.

  378. We just

  379. plough on ahead.

  380. My life,

  381. my choice.

  382. It seems

  383. that Proverbs 3

  384. goes out the window.

  385. Look at it

  386. on the screen.

  387. Trust in the Lord

  388. with all your heart

  389. and lean not

  390. on your own

  391. understanding.

  392. In all your ways

  393. submit to him

  394. and he will

  395. make your path

  396. straight.

  397. You see,

  398. we do very well

  399. not to trust

  400. our own hearts.

  401. Our hearts

  402. are deceitful.

  403. It's wise

  404. when we

  405. submit

  406. all things

  407. to God.

  408. And if we

  409. are Christians,

  410. God has given

  411. to us

  412. the church

  413. he's given

  414. to us

  415. his word,

  416. his Holy Spirit,

  417. we would do

  418. well not to

  419. follow Jacob's

  420. path.

  421. Inquire

  422. of the Lord.

  423. Talk to an

  424. old

  425. grey beard

  426. or grey haired.

  427. They have

  428. experience.

  429. Be accountable

  430. to those

  431. around you.

  432. Stop

  433. making

  434. independent

  435. decisions.

  436. It just

  437. might save

  438. you

  439. a very

  440. destructive

  441. life.

  442. So as

  443. we journey

  444. through life,

  445. be careful

  446. that we are

  447. not blinded

  448. by love.

  449. We are

  450. always in

  451. need

  452. of grace.

  453. So,

  454. third,

  455. tempted by

  456. desire,

  457. blinded by

  458. love,

  459. deceived

  460. by pride.

  461. after seven

  462. years of

  463. hard work,

  464. Jacob and

  465. Rachel were

  466. ready to

  467. get married.

  468. Verse 21,

  469. Jacob said to

  470. Laban,

  471. give me my

  472. wife,

  473. my time is

  474. completed and

  475. I want to

  476. make love to

  477. her.

  478. It's time to

  479. consummate the

  480. marriage.

  481. Let's make it

  482. legal and

  483. official.

  484. But old

  485. Laban has

  486. grown cunning

  487. over the

  488. years,

  489. hasn't he?

  490. He's got

  491. two daughters

  492. and he

  493. doesn't have

  494. any concerns

  495. about marrying

  496. off Rachel.

  497. I mean,

  498. she was

  499. gorgeous.

  500. That's not

  501. going to be

  502. a problem.

  503. Leah,

  504. on the other

  505. hand,

  506. well,

  507. she has

  508. tender eyes

  509. and

  510. compassionate

  511. eyes,

  512. but that's

  513. as far as

  514. it went.

  515. Who's

  516. going to

  517. marry Leah?

  518. Laban has

  519. a plan.

  520. Verse 22,

  521. Laban brought

  522. together all

  523. the people of

  524. that place

  525. and gave a

  526. feast.

  527. It's wedding

  528. time.

  529. Plenty of

  530. food,

  531. plenty of

  532. wine.

  533. But when

  534. evening came,

  535. under the

  536. cover of

  537. darkness and

  538. after the

  539. wine had

  540. taken its

  541. effect,

  542. he took

  543. his daughter

  544. Leah and

  545. brought her

  546. to Jacob.

  547. Well,

  548. he hadn't

  549. got a clue.

  550. Jacob made

  551. love to

  552. her.

  553. And Laban

  554. gave his

  555. servant

  556. Zilpah to

  557. his daughter

  558. as her

  559. attendant.

  560. When

  561. morning came,

  562. there was

  563. Leah.

  564. What?

  565. This can't

  566. be.

  567. Talk about

  568. sobering up.

  569. My goodness

  570. me, what's

  571. happened?

  572. Then it

  573. dawned,

  574. verse 25,

  575. So Jacob

  576. said to

  577. Laban,

  578. what is

  579. this you

  580. have done

  581. to me?

  582. I have

  583. served you

  584. for Rachel,

  585. didn't I?

  586. Why have

  587. you deceived

  588. me?

  589. Well,

  590. Jacob couldn't

  591. see the

  592. irony in it

  593. all,

  594. could he?

  595. He's been

  596. deceiving all

  597. his life.

  598. Now he's

  599. outraged that

  600. someone close

  601. to him,

  602. even his own

  603. father-in-law,

  604. would do

  605. such a thing.

  606. Could he

  607. really be

  608. angry and

  609. annoyed after

  610. all he had

  611. done?

  612. You see,

  613. Jacob's

  614. desires and

  615. loves have

  616. not satisfied

  617. him or

  618. fulfilled him.

  619. Yes, he

  620. got Rachel,

  621. but it came

  622. at a price.

  623. It took

  624. another seven

  625. years hard

  626. labor, and

  627. he got

  628. another wife

  629. he doesn't

  630. love,

  631. verse 30.

  632. Jacob made

  633. love to

  634. Rachel also,

  635. and his

  636. love for

  637. Rachel was

  638. greater than

  639. his love

  640. for Leah.

  641. It's stronger

  642. than that,

  643. it's he had

  644. no love

  645. for Leah,

  646. and he

  647. worked for

  648. Laban another

  649. seven years.

  650. Anyone could

  651. see that

  652. marrying two

  653. sisters was

  654. never going

  655. to work out.

  656. It's not

  657. going to be

  658. a happy

  659. home,

  660. and as we'll

  661. see in the

  662. coming weeks,

  663. it's an

  664. absolute

  665. mess.

  666. Yeah, we

  667. could argue,

  668. and you

  669. might point

  670. out that

  671. Laban was

  672. the one who

  673. deceived

  674. Jacob, which

  675. he did,

  676. but at the

  677. same time,

  678. let's not

  679. lose the

  680. fact that

  681. Jacob is

  682. deceived by

  683. his own

  684. pride.

  685. He's to

  686. blame for

  687. the whole

  688. fiasco.

  689. The effects

  690. of his

  691. selfish choices

  692. and stubborn

  693. pride have

  694. come home

  695. with disastrous

  696. consequences.

  697. We like to

  698. point the

  699. finger and

  700. blame others.

  701. He said,

  702. she did,

  703. they always,

  704. why have

  705. you deceived

  706. me?

  707. But the

  708. reality is,

  709. Jacob only

  710. has to

  711. blame himself,

  712. as Proverbs

  713. reminds us.

  714. There it

  715. is on the

  716. screen.

  717. Pride goes

  718. before destruction,

  719. a haughty

  720. spirit before

  721. a fall.

  722. You see,

  723. it could have

  724. been so

  725. very different.

  726. Remember back

  727. to Jacob's

  728. encounter with

  729. God?

  730. Look what

  731. God promised.

  732. Chapter 28,

  733. verse 15.

  734. Remember what

  735. God had

  736. promised Jacob

  737. back then?

  738. I am with

  739. you.

  740. I'll watch

  741. over you

  742. wherever you

  743. go.

  744. I'll bring

  745. you back to

  746. this land.

  747. I will not

  748. leave you

  749. until I

  750. have done

  751. what I

  752. have promised

  753. you.

  754. All of

  755. this I'm

  756. for you,

  757. Jacob.

  758. All Jacob

  759. needed to

  760. do was to

  761. ask and

  762. to trust.

  763. The sad

  764. thing is,

  765. Jacob never

  766. talked to

  767. God.

  768. He never

  769. asked God.

  770. He never

  771. inquires of

  772. God.

  773. In fact,

  774. in the whole

  775. text that we

  776. read,

  777. there's no

  778. mention of

  779. God.

  780. God is

  781. absent.

  782. It's as if

  783. Jacob has

  784. left God

  785. back in

  786. Bethel and

  787. headed off

  788. on his

  789. own.

  790. I can

  791. do life

  792. my way.

  793. Jacob had

  794. been promised

  795. God's

  796. presence,

  797. but he

  798. ignores it.

  799. Well,

  800. how quickly

  801. we forget

  802. the privilege

  803. we have as

  804. brothers and

  805. sisters of

  806. the Lord

  807. Jesus Christ.

  808. How we've

  809. been given

  810. access to

  811. our generous,

  812. kind Father

  813. in heaven,

  814. the God

  815. who made

  816. us,

  817. who has

  818. promised us

  819. every

  820. spiritual

  821. blessing in

  822. Christ,

  823. wisdom,

  824. grace,

  825. mercy,

  826. strength,

  827. it's all

  828. yours,

  829. but we

  830. don't ask.

  831. Instead,

  832. we follow

  833. our desires,

  834. we pursue

  835. our loves,

  836. we take

  837. pride in

  838. our self

  839. dependence.

  840. Like

  841. Jacob,

  842. we need

  843. God's

  844. continued

  845. grace.

  846. And

  847. thankfully,

  848. God doesn't

  849. give up on

  850. us.

  851. We have a

  852. saviour,

  853. Jesus,

  854. who followed

  855. not his own

  856. desires,

  857. but followed

  858. the desire

  859. of his

  860. Father in

  861. heaven,

  862. who didn't

  863. chase his

  864. own loves,

  865. but pursues

  866. us in

  867. love.

  868. Who comes

  869. to deal

  870. with our

  871. pride by

  872. dying our

  873. death,

  874. taking our

  875. punishment so

  876. that we can

  877. depend upon

  878. him.

  879. In Christ,

  880. our desires

  881. are fulfilled.

  882. In Christ,

  883. our loves

  884. are satisfied.

  885. In Christ,

  886. we receive

  887. grace for

  888. the journey.

  889. we have a

  890. generous and

  891. kind

  892. father who

  893. loves to

  894. give good

  895. gifts to

  896. his children.

  897. All we

  898. need to do

  899. is to be

  900. humble and

  901. ask and

  902. not full of

  903. pride.

  904. We're going

  905. to pray.

  906. As we do,

  907. I'm going to

  908. read three

  909. verses from

  910. scripture.

  911. As I read

  912. them, just

  913. listen to

  914. their

  915. invitation.

  916. And maybe

  917. there's one

  918. that you want

  919. to respond

  920. to.

  921. Let's just

  922. take a moment

  923. to reflect

  924. on what we

  925. hear as we

  926. need God's

  927. grace.

  928. Listen to

  929. the invitation

  930. of the

  931. Lord.

  932. Matthew

  933. 11.

  934. Come to

  935. me, all

  936. who are

  937. weary and

  938. burdened, and

  939. I will give

  940. you rest.

  941. Take my

  942. yoke upon

  943. you and

  944. learn from

  945. me, for

  946. I am

  947. gentle and

  948. humble in

  949. heart, and

  950. you will

  951. find rest

  952. for your

  953. souls.

  954. Hebrews

  955. 4.

  956. Let us

  957. approach

  958. God's

  959. throne of

  960. grace with

  961. confidence,

  962. so that

  963. we may

  964. receive

  965. mercy and

  966. grace to

  967. help us

  968. in our

  969. time of

  970. need.

  971. And

  972. James

  973. 4.

  974. But he

  975. gives us

  976. more grace.

  977. That is

  978. why

  979. scripture

  980. says,

  981. God

  982. opposes

  983. the proud,

  984. but shows

  985. favor or

  986. grace to

  987. the humble.

  988. Come near

  989. to God, and

  990. he will come

  991. near to

  992. you.

  993. Humble

  994. yourselves,

  995. and he

  996. will lift

  997. you up.

  998. Father,

  999. we come

  1000. to you

  1001. because we

  1002. need you.

  1003. Our

  1004. desires,

  1005. our

  1006. loves,

  1007. are so

  1008. often

  1009. twisted.

  1010. We are

  1011. deceived by

  1012. our own

  1013. pride.

  1014. How we

  1015. need your

  1016. grace and

  1017. mercy.

  1018. How we

  1019. need your

  1020. help.

  1021. Thank you,

  1022. generous

  1023. Father, that

  1024. you now

  1025. give us

  1026. what we

  1027. need for

  1028. our

  1029. journey.

  1030. You

  1031. withhold no

  1032. good thing

  1033. from those

  1034. who love

  1035. you and

  1036. trust you.

  1037. So please

  1038. help us as

  1039. we now

  1040. ask.

  1041. Give us

  1042. what we

  1043. need.

  1044. That we

  1045. may follow

  1046. you all

  1047. the days

  1048. of our

  1049. life,

  1050. trusting in

  1051. your grace

  1052. alone,

  1053. knowing that

  1054. will be

  1055. sufficient.

  1056. thank you,

  1057. Jesus.

  1058. Thank you

  1059. that you

  1060. are enough

  1061. for us

  1062. today.

  1063. Amen.

  1064. Amen.

  1065. We're

  1066. going to

  1067. sing.

  1068. Christ is

  1069. my reward

  1070. and all

  1071. of my

  1072. devotion.

  1073. This is

  1074. our true

  1075. desire,

  1076. our true

  1077. love.

  1078. This song

  1079. helps us

  1080. to express

  1081. our trust

  1082. for our

  1083. need of

  1084. Christ.

  1085. If you're

  1086. able to,

  1087. I invite you

  1088. to stand

  1089. as we

  1090. sing our

  1091. song together.

  1092. Amen.

  1093. Amen.
