  1. Today and how God is at work in the midst of lives.

  2. Again, if you've missed any of the talks, there was a bit of a lull there for a while,

  3. but thankfully Ralph has been able to sort that out in the website,

  4. so the recent talks are all now up online again,

  5. and you can catch up or follow along if you missed any.

  6. We are reading this morning Genesis 29 verse 31 to chapter 30 verse 24,

    Genesis 29:31

  7. and Kirsty is going to read this morning.

  8. When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved,

  9. he enabled her to conceive, but Rachel remained childless.

  10. Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.

  11. She named him Reuben, for she said,

  12. It is because the Lord has seen my misery.

  13. Surely my husband will love me now.

  14. She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son, she said,

  15. Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too.

  16. So she named him Simeon.

  17. Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son, she said,

  18. Now at last my husband will become attached to me,

  19. because I have born him three sons.

  20. So he was named Levi.

  21. She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son, she said,

  22. This time I will praise the Lord.

  23. So she named him Judah.

  24. Then she stopped having children.

  25. When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children,

  26. she became jealous of her sister.

  27. So she said to Jacob,

  28. Give me children or I will die.

  29. Jacob became angry with her and said,

  30. Am I in the place of God who has kept you from having children?

  31. Then she said,

  32. Here is Bilhah, my servant.

  33. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me,

  34. and I too can build a family through her.

  35. So she gave him her servant, Bilhah, as a wife.

  36. Jacob slept with her,

  37. and she became pregnant and bore him a son.

  38. Then Rachel said,

  39. God has vindicated me.

  40. He has listened to my plea and given me a son.

  41. Because of this, she named him Dan.

  42. Rachel's servant Bilhah conceived again

  43. and bore Jacob a second son.

  44. Then Rachel said,

  45. I have had a great struggle with my sister,

  46. and I have won.

  47. So she named him Naphtali.

  48. When Leah saw that she had stopped having children,

  49. she took her servant, Zilpah,

  50. and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

  51. Leah's servant, Zilpah, bore Jacob a son.

  52. Then Leah said,

  53. What good fortune?

  54. So she named him Gad.

  55. Leah's servant, Zilpah, bore Jacob a second son.

  56. Then Leah said,

  57. How happy I am.

  58. The women will call me happy.

  59. So she called him Asher.

  60. During wheat harvest,

  61. Reuben went out into the fields

  62. and found some mandrake plants

  63. when he brought to his mother Leah.

  64. Rachel said to Leah,

  65. Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.

  66. But she said to her,

  67. Wasn't it enough that you took away my husband?

  68. Will you take my son's mandrakes too?

  69. Very well, Rachel said.

  70. He can sleep with you tonight

  71. in return for your son's mandrakes.

  72. So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening,

  73. Leah went out to meet him.

  74. You must sleep with me, she said.

  75. I've hired you with my son's mandrakes.

  76. So he slept with her that night.

  77. God listened to Leah,

  78. and she became pregnant

  79. and bore Jacob a fifth son.

  80. Then Leah said,

  81. God has rewarded me

  82. for giving my servant to my husband.

  83. So she named him Issachar.

  84. Leah conceived again

  85. and bore Jacob a sixth son.

  86. Then Leah said,

  87. God has presented me

  88. with a precious gift.

  89. This time my husband

  90. will treat me with honor

  91. because I have borne him six sons.

  92. So she named him Zebulun.

  93. Sometime later,

  94. she gave birth to a daughter

  95. and named her Dinah.

  96. Then God remembered Rachel.

  97. He listened to her

  98. and enabled her to conceive.

  99. She became pregnant

  100. and gave birth to a son

  101. and said,

  102. God has taken away my disgrace.

  103. She named him Joseph

  104. and said,

  105. May the Lord add to me another son.

  106. Thank you, Kirsty.

  107. Great stories, aren't they?

  108. But they're not just stories.

  109. They're true stories.

  110. Before we look at it,

  111. if anybody wants notes this morning,

  112. the sheets that we hand out

  113. or a pen,

  114. I forgot to pass them out earlier.

  115. Alex is standing patiently

  116. if any of you want them.

  117. just wave a hand

  118. and he will bring it to you.

  119. No takers.

  120. Thanks, Alex.

  121. Well, let's pray

  122. and ask for God's help

  123. as we look at his word together.

  124. Our Father God,

  125. thank you so much

  126. for these accounts,

  127. these true records

  128. of an ancient family

  129. and all that they went through.

  130. not as examples for us,

  131. but demonstrations

  132. of the great God that you are,

  133. who is at work

  134. in the midst of many difficulties

  135. and struggles.

  136. And Father,

  137. you look down upon us today.

  138. You are present here with us.

  139. And you know each of our hearts.

  140. You know what we struggle with.

  141. You know the things

  142. that we find hard.

  143. And so we pray

  144. that you would speak to us afresh.

  145. And that you would give to us

  146. all that we need

  147. as we seek to follow you

  148. in our life.

  149. So help us, we pray.

  150. In Jesus' name.

  151. Amen.

  152. One husband,

  153. four wives,

  154. twelve children.

  155. It's a mess, isn't it?

  156. Jacob's selfish choices

  157. and sinful decisions

  158. has led to a life

  159. of sadness and hurt,

  160. jealousy and rivalry,

  161. division and despair.

  162. It's a picture of what happens

  163. when we leave God

  164. out of our lives

  165. and go it alone.

  166. And maybe as we read this story,

  167. you're thinking,

  168. gosh,

  169. that's a bit like my family.

  170. Maybe you feel hurt

  171. and sad

  172. from family experiences.

  173. Maybe you're experiencing

  174. division and despair.

  175. We face all kinds

  176. of struggles,

  177. don't we,

  178. with family relationships,

  179. friend relationships.

  180. And we wonder,

  181. is there any way

  182. through all of the mess?

  183. Yet behind the scenes

  184. of this story,

  185. we'll see that

  186. there is a beauty

  187. in the brokenness.

  188. There is hope

  189. in the despair.

  190. because as we

  191. follow this true account,

  192. we see the goodness

  193. and kindness of God.

  194. The God who

  195. longs to restore

  196. broken lives

  197. and renew

  198. this disordered world.

  199. We're going to look

  200. at four big themes.

  201. We're going to see

  202. God's love,

  203. God's mercy,

  204. God's faithfulness

  205. and God's grace.

  206. And as each one

  207. piles upon each other,

  208. so we will see

  209. the beauty

  210. in the brokenness.

  211. So first,

  212. let's look at

  213. God's love

  214. for the unloved.

  215. God's love

  216. for the unloved.

  217. It was meant

  218. to be a wedding

  219. they would never forget.

  220. Jacob was marrying

  221. the love

  222. of his life,

  223. Rachel,

  224. except her father,

  225. Laban,

  226. had other plans.

  227. Just go back

  228. a couple of verses

  229. to chapter 29,

  230. verse 22.

  231. It's on the eve

  232. of the wedding

  233. of Jacob and Rachel.

  234. Chapter 29,

  235. verse 22.

  236. So Laban the father

  237. brought together

  238. all the people

  239. of that place

  240. and gave a great feast.

  241. This is a wedding celebration.

  242. Plenty of food,

  243. the wine was flowing.

  244. But when evening came,

  245. under the cover

  246. of darkness,

  247. and when the wine

  248. had taken its effect,

  249. he took his daughter Leah,

  250. not Rachel,

  251. and brought her

  252. to Jacob.

  253. And Jacob made love

  254. to her,

  255. and Laban gave

  256. his servant Zilpah

  257. to his daughter

  258. as her attendant.

  259. And when morning came,

  260. when Jacob woke up,

  261. my goodness me,

  262. there was Leah.

  263. It turned out

  264. to be a wedding

  265. they would not forget

  266. for all the wrong reasons.

  267. Well, despite Jacob

  268. being married off to Leah,

  269. Jacob also married

  270. Rachel too.

  271. So he has two wives.

  272. But there was only love

  273. for one wife.

  274. Look at verse 30,

  275. chapter 29.

  276. Jacob made love

  277. to Rachel also,

  278. and his love

  279. for Rachel

  280. was greater

  281. than his love

  282. for Leah.

  283. Leah was used

  284. by her father

  285. in his cunning plan,

  286. and now Leah

  287. is unloved

  288. by her husband.

  289. She felt it

  290. and she knew it.

  291. But so did God.

  292. Look at verse 31.

  293. When the Lord

  294. saw

  295. that Leah

  296. was not

  297. loved.

  298. God's not immune

  299. to what's going on.

  300. God saw

  301. that Leah

  302. was literally

  303. hated

  304. by her husband.

  305. In fact,

  306. because Rachel

  307. couldn't have children,

  308. Jacob

  309. used Leah.

  310. What a desperate

  311. existence for her.

  312. Leah's only value

  313. was to produce

  314. children

  315. for an unloving

  316. husband.

  317. And when the deed

  318. was done,

  319. Leah was discarded.

  320. Well,

  321. God saw

  322. her brokenness

  323. and heartache.

  324. And he does

  325. something about it

  326. because that's

  327. what God does.

  328. When he sees,

  329. he acts.

  330. He gets involved.

  331. In fact,

  332. the names

  333. of the children

  334. reveal this.

  335. God enables

  336. Leah to conceive

  337. and she gives birth

  338. to her first son.

  339. Look at verse 32.

  340. She gives birth

  341. to her first son

  342. who she calls

  343. Reuben,

  344. which means

  345. it's because

  346. the Lord

  347. has seen

  348. my misery.

  349. Then she has

  350. another son

  351. who she calls

  352. Simeon

  353. and he's called

  354. Simeon

  355. because

  356. the Lord

  357. heard

  358. that I am

  359. not loved.

  360. You could imagine

  361. a young Reuben

  362. and Simeon

  363. playing outside

  364. and Leah

  365. calling them in

  366. for dinner.

  367. The Lord

  368. has seen

  369. my misery.

  370. The Lord

  371. has heard

  372. I'm not

  373. loved.

  374. Dinner time.

  375. Now such

  376. name calling

  377. can be strange

  378. to us.

  379. But every time

  380. she called

  381. their names

  382. it was a reminder

  383. not just

  384. about her

  385. husband

  386. but of

  387. God's love

  388. to her.

  389. God

  390. sees

  391. her misery.

  392. God

  393. hears

  394. her pain.

  395. God

  396. knows

  397. Leah

  398. is

  399. unloved

  400. and so

  401. God

  402. reaches

  403. down

  404. and

  405. he

  406. loves

  407. her.

  408. Now isn't

  409. that what

  410. we all

  411. so desperately

  412. need to

  413. know?

  414. That where

  415. we are

  416. right now

  417. God

  418. sees

  419. you

  420. in

  421. your

  422. misery.

  423. He

  424. sees

  425. your

  426. heartache

  427. and

  428. he

  429. loves

  430. you.

  431. God

  432. hears

  433. your

  434. cry

  435. of

  436. pain

  437. and

  438. your

  439. hurts

  440. and

  441. he

  442. loves

  443. you.

  444. In fact

  445. God's

  446. love

  447. is a

  448. steadfast

  449. love.

  450. Leah

  451. is

  452. desperate

  453. for

  454. love.

  455. She

  456. longs

  457. doesn't

  458. she

  459. for

  460. the

  461. affection

  462. of

  463. her

  464. husband.

  465. Leah

  466. hopes

  467. that

  468. by

  469. giving

  470. children

  471. to

  472. Jacob

  473. somehow

  474. his

  475. hardened

  476. heart

  477. will

  478. soften

  479. and

  480. he

  481. will

  482. show

  483. some

  484. kind

  485. of

  486. affection

  487. and

  488. love

  489. towards

  490. her.

  491. Give

  492. her a

  493. hug

  494. at

  495. least.

  496. we

  497. can

  498. feel

  499. her

  500. longing.

  501. Look

  502. at

  503. verse

  504. 2.

  505. Surely

  506. my

  507. husband

  508. will

  509. love

  510. me

  511. now.

  512. And

  513. as she

  514. gives

  515. birth

  516. again

  517. in

  518. verse

  519. 34.

  520. Now

  521. at

  522. last

  523. my

  524. husband

  525. will

  526. become

  527. attached

  528. to

  529. me.

  530. The

  531. vows

  532. he

  533. made

  534. will

  535. become

  536. true.

  537. But

  538. love

  539. never

  540. came.

  541. But

  542. what

  543. she

  544. does

  545. discover

  546. that

  547. in

  548. all

  549. her

  550. human

  551. disappointments

  552. is

  553. a

  554. love

  555. that's

  556. never

  557. going

  558. to

  559. let

  560. her

  561. go.

  562. Look

  563. at

  564. verse

  565. 35.

  566. She

  567. conceived

  568. again

  569. and when

  570. she

  571. gave

  572. birth

  573. to

  574. a

  575. son

  576. she

  577. said

  578. this

  579. time

  580. I

  581. will

  582. praise

  583. the

  584. Lord.

  585. So

  586. she

  587. named

  588. him

  589. Judah

  590. which

  591. means

  592. praise.

  593. I

  594. think

  595. that

  596. this

  597. is a

  598. humble

  599. recognition

  600. on

  601. behalf

  602. of

  603. Leah

  604. that

  605. all

  606. her

  607. hopes

  608. in

  609. people

  610. all

  611. her

  612. dreams

  613. in

  614. something

  615. else

  616. will

  617. always

  618. let

  619. us

  620. down.

  621. The

  622. loves

  623. of

  624. this

  625. world

  626. will

  627. never

  628. satisfy

  629. but

  630. there

  631. is

  632. one

  633. who

  634. is

  635. loyal.

  636. Despite

  637. all

  638. the

  639. mess

  640. and

  641. brokenness

  642. we

  643. can

  644. praise

  645. the

  646. Lord

  647. because

  648. God's

  649. love

  650. is

  651. steadfast.

  652. Hear

  653. his

  654. voice

  655. to

  656. you

  657. today.

  658. God

  659. loves

  660. you.

  661. God

  662. loves

  663. you.

  664. So

  665. first

  666. God's

  667. love

  668. for the

  669. unloved.

  670. Second

  671. we're

  672. going to

  673. see

  674. God's

  675. mercy

  676. in the

  677. madness

  678. because

  679. this

  680. is

  681. where

  682. the

  683. madness

  684. really

  685. kicks

  686. off.

  687. If

  688. God

  689. sees

  690. and

  691. he

  692. acts

  693. in

  694. love

  695. Rachel

  696. also

  697. sees

  698. and

  699. acts

  700. but

  701. not

  702. in

  703. love.

  704. Chapter

  705. 30

  706. verse

  707. 1

  708. when

  709. Rachel

  710. saw

  711. that

  712. she

  713. was

  714. not

  715. bearing

  716. Jacob

  717. any

  718. children

  719. she

  720. became

  721. jealous

  722. of

  723. her

  724. sister.

  725. So

  726. she

  727. said

  728. to

  729. Jacob

  730. give

  731. me

  732. children

  733. or

  734. I'll

  735. die.

  736. And

  737. so

  738. the

  739. blame

  740. game

  741. begins

  742. fighting

  743. and

  744. squabbling.

  745. And

  746. what

  747. follows

  748. are

  749. the

  750. results

  751. of

  752. bitter

  753. rivalry.

  754. Because

  755. Rachel

  756. can't

  757. conceive

  758. she

  759. hands

  760. over

  761. her

  762. maid

  763. servant.

  764. Verse

  765. 3

  766. She

  767. said

  768. here's

  769. Bilhah

  770. my

  771. servant

  772. sleep

  773. with

  774. her

  775. so

  776. that

  777. she

  778. can

  779. bear

  780. children

  781. for

  782. me

  783. and

  784. I

  785. too

  786. can

  787. build

  788. a

  789. family

  790. through

  791. her.

  792. And

  793. Bilhah

  794. has

  795. two

  796. children

  797. for

  798. Rachel.

  799. The

  800. first

  801. called

  802. Dan

  803. which

  804. means

  805. God

  806. has

  807. vindicated

  808. me

  809. or

  810. God's

  811. justice.

  812. The

  813. second

  814. she

  815. calls

  816. Naphtali

  817. which

  818. means

  819. I

  820. have

  821. won.

  822. Well

  823. Leah's

  824. not

  825. going to

  826. stand

  827. for

  828. this

  829. is

  830. she?

  831. So

  832. she

  833. responds

  834. by

  835. giving

  836. her

  837. maid

  838. servant

  839. to

  840. Jacob

  841. verse

  842. 9

  843. When

  844. Leah

  845. saw

  846. that

  847. she

  848. had

  849. stopped

  850. having

  851. children

  852. she

  853. took

  854. her

  855. servant

  856. Zilpah

  857. and

  858. gave

  859. her

  860. to

  861. Jacob

  862. as

  863. a

  864. wife

  865. and

  866. she

  867. also

  868. has

  869. two

  870. children

  871. the

  872. first

  873. is

  874. called

  875. Gad

  876. which

  877. means

  878. lucky

  879. or

  880. good

  881. fortune

  882. the

  883. second

  884. is

  885. called

  886. Asher

  887. which

  888. means

  889. I'm

  890. happy

  891. again

  892. we can

  893. imagine

  894. these

  895. four

  896. children

  897. at the

  898. school

  899. gates

  900. waiting

  901. for their

  902. mothers

  903. to appear

  904. Rachel

  905. arrives

  906. to collect

  907. her

  908. children

  909. and

  910. with a

  911. sly

  912. look

  913. at

  914. Leah

  915. calls

  916. her

  917. first

  918. son

  919. God's

  920. justice

  921. and

  922. he

  923. comes

  924. running

  925. over

  926. Leah

  927. in

  928. response

  929. shouts

  930. out in

  931. delight

  932. good

  933. fortune

  934. and

  935. he

  936. runs

  937. over

  938. and gives

  939. her

  940. a

  941. big

  942. hug

  943. well

  944. Rachel's

  945. not

  946. going

  947. to be

  948. outdone

  949. so she

  950. shouts

  951. out for

  952. all to

  953. hear

  954. I

  955. have

  956. won

  957. and

  958. well

  959. as

  960. little

  961. I

  962. have

  963. won

  964. comes

  965. skipping

  966. through

  967. the

  968. gate

  969. Leah

  970. with

  971. a

  972. beaming

  973. smile

  974. calls

  975. out

  976. I'm

  977. happy

  978. well

  979. her

  980. behaviour

  981. is

  982. shameful

  983. isn't

  984. it

  985. the

  986. children

  987. have

  988. become

  989. innocent

  990. weapons

  991. in a

  992. war

  993. of

  994. rivalry

  995. the

  996. maids

  997. servants

  998. are

  999. used

  1000. and

  1001. abused

  1002. in a

  1003. game

  1004. for

  1005. power

  1006. but

  1007. perhaps

  1008. what is

  1009. worse

  1010. is

  1011. they

  1012. both

  1013. claim

  1014. to have

  1015. God

  1016. on

  1017. their

  1018. side

  1019. God

  1020. has

  1021. blessed

  1022. me

  1023. this

  1024. is

  1025. what

  1026. God

  1027. is

  1028. doing

  1029. in

  1030. my

  1031. life

  1032. well

  1033. yes

  1034. God

  1035. is

  1036. at

  1037. work

  1038. but

  1039. not

  1040. in the

  1041. ways

  1042. they

  1043. could

  1044. ever

  1045. imagine

  1046. you

  1047. see

  1048. the

  1049. wonder

  1050. in

  1051. all

  1052. of

  1053. this

  1054. is

  1055. that

  1056. God

  1057. doesn't

  1058. abandon

  1059. them

  1060. or

  1061. give

  1062. up

  1063. on

  1064. them

  1065. it

  1066. seems

  1067. God's

  1068. patience

  1069. with

  1070. these

  1071. two

  1072. fighting

  1073. sisters

  1074. is

  1075. immense

  1076. it

  1077. truly

  1078. is a

  1079. case

  1080. of

  1081. their

  1082. sins

  1083. they

  1084. are

  1085. many

  1086. but

  1087. his

  1088. mercy

  1089. is

  1090. more

  1091. now

  1092. doesn't

  1093. this

  1094. tell us

  1095. something

  1096. about

  1097. how

  1098. God

  1099. treats

  1100. us

  1101. how

  1102. many

  1103. relationships

  1104. have

  1105. we

  1106. been

  1107. in

  1108. and

  1109. we

  1110. have

  1111. seen

  1112. them

  1113. break

  1114. and

  1115. fall

  1116. apart

  1117. maybe

  1118. within

  1119. our

  1120. own

  1121. very

  1122. family

  1123. units

  1124. or

  1125. within

  1126. our

  1127. friendships

  1128. there's

  1129. a

  1130. breakdown

  1131. and

  1132. things

  1133. aren't

  1134. the

  1135. same

  1136. not

  1137. just

  1138. because

  1139. of

  1140. what

  1141. others

  1142. have

  1143. done

  1144. to

  1145. us

  1146. but

  1147. perhaps

  1148. because

  1149. of

  1150. how

  1151. we

  1152. have

  1153. reacted

  1154. yes

  1155. we've

  1156. all

  1157. been

  1158. hurt

  1159. we can

  1160. tell

  1161. our

  1162. stories

  1163. of

  1164. how

  1165. people

  1166. have

  1167. said

  1168. things

  1169. and

  1170. done

  1171. things

  1172. but

  1173. haven't

  1174. we

  1175. hurt

  1176. others

  1177. too

  1178. we

  1179. mightn't

  1180. call

  1181. our

  1182. children

  1183. God's

  1184. justice

  1185. but

  1186. we

  1187. sure

  1188. know

  1189. how

  1190. to

  1191. hand

  1192. it

  1193. out

  1194. by

  1195. our

  1196. refusal

  1197. to

  1198. forgive

  1199. and

  1200. we

  1201. mightn't

  1202. declare

  1203. I

  1204. have

  1205. won

  1206. but

  1207. don't

  1208. we

  1209. inwardly

  1210. replay

  1211. our

  1212. arguments

  1213. in

  1214. our

  1215. minds

  1216. over

  1217. and

  1218. over

  1219. again

  1220. so

  1221. that

  1222. we

  1223. come

  1224. out

  1225. the

  1226. winners

  1227. and

  1228. we're

  1229. always

  1230. on

  1231. top

  1232. isn't

  1233. it

  1234. a

  1235. wonder

  1236. that

  1237. God

  1238. doesn't

  1239. abandon

  1240. us

  1241. all

  1242. together

  1243. amazingly

  1244. God

  1245. does

  1246. not

  1247. treat

  1248. us

  1249. as

  1250. our

  1251. sins

  1252. deserve

  1253. so

  1254. second

  1255. note

  1256. God's

  1257. mercy

  1258. in

  1259. the

  1260. madness

  1261. third

  1262. God's

  1263. faithfulness

  1264. over

  1265. the

  1266. unfaithful

  1267. now

  1268. when we

  1269. think

  1270. things

  1271. can't

  1272. get

  1273. any

  1274. worse

  1275. we

  1276. have

  1277. the

  1278. incident

  1279. of

  1280. the

  1281. mandrakes

  1282. ever

  1283. had

  1284. mandrakes

  1285. delivered

  1286. to your

  1287. house

  1288. well

  1289. Reuben

  1290. brings

  1291. in his

  1292. mom

  1293. a bunch

  1294. of

  1295. flowers

  1296. or

  1297. perhaps

  1298. their

  1299. fruits

  1300. as

  1301. well

  1302. we're

  1303. not

  1304. quite

  1305. sure

  1306. one

  1307. day

  1308. after

  1309. work

  1310. he

  1311. brings

  1312. in

  1313. these

  1314. mandrakes

  1315. and

  1316. well

  1317. Rachel

  1318. kicks

  1319. off

  1320. doesn't

  1321. she

  1322. because

  1323. she

  1324. wants

  1325. the

  1326. flowers

  1327. too

  1328. not

  1329. red

  1330. roses

  1331. I

  1332. want

  1333. mandrakes

  1334. well

  1335. what's

  1336. the

  1337. interest

  1338. in

  1339. mandrakes

  1340. well

  1341. commentators

  1342. tell us

  1343. that they

  1344. were a

  1345. symbol

  1346. for

  1347. fertility

  1348. perhaps

  1349. it was

  1350. the

  1351. scent

  1352. of

  1353. the

  1354. flowers

  1355. or

  1356. the

  1357. taste

  1358. of

  1359. the

  1360. fruits

  1361. it

  1362. was

  1363. like

  1364. an

  1365. aphrodisiac

  1366. this

  1367. is

  1368. going

  1369. to

  1370. help

  1371. me

  1372. anyways

  1373. Rachel

  1374. has

  1375. no

  1376. kids

  1377. that's

  1378. what

  1379. we've

  1380. learned

  1381. not

  1382. of

  1383. her

  1384. own

  1385. anyway

  1386. so

  1387. she

  1388. wants

  1389. to

  1390. try

  1391. out

  1392. the

  1393. fertility

  1394. flowers

  1395. maybe

  1396. that's

  1397. going

  1398. to

  1399. help

  1400. Leah

  1401. is

  1402. not

  1403. too

  1404. keen

  1405. on

  1406. sharing

  1407. the

  1408. flowers

  1409. but

  1410. for

  1411. the

  1412. chance

  1413. of

  1414. having

  1415. Jacob

  1416. for

  1417. the

  1418. night

  1419. well

  1420. she'll

  1421. pass

  1422. on

  1423. the

  1424. mandrakes

  1425. to

  1426. Rachel

  1427. so

  1428. Rachel

  1429. trades

  1430. in

  1431. her

  1432. husband

  1433. who

  1434. also

  1435. happens

  1436. to be

  1437. Leah's

  1438. husband

  1439. as well

  1440. by the

  1441. way

  1442. for

  1443. the

  1444. fertility

  1445. flowers

  1446. verse

  1447. 16

  1448. so

  1449. when

  1450. Jacob

  1451. came in

  1452. from the

  1453. fields

  1454. that

  1455. evening

  1456. Leah

  1457. went

  1458. out

  1459. to

  1460. meet

  1461. him

  1462. Jacob

  1463. you're

  1464. sleeping

  1465. with

  1466. me

  1467. tonight

  1468. it's

  1469. pathetic

  1470. isn't

  1471. it

  1472. it

  1473. seems

  1474. Jacob

  1475. has

  1476. gotten

  1477. used

  1478. to

  1479. being

  1480. told

  1481. with

  1482. who

  1483. he

  1484. must

  1485. sleep

  1486. with

  1487. his

  1488. role

  1489. as a

  1490. husband

  1491. is

  1492. gone

  1493. he's

  1494. lost

  1495. all

  1496. respect

  1497. and

  1498. all

  1499. honour

  1500. what

  1501. is

  1502. this

  1503. strange

  1504. incident

  1505. all

  1506. about

  1507. well

  1508. I

  1509. think

  1510. it's

  1511. here

  1512. to

  1513. tell

  1514. us

  1515. that

  1516. it

  1517. is

  1518. God

  1519. who

  1520. is

  1521. ultimately

  1522. in

  1523. control

  1524. and

  1525. it

  1526. is

  1527. God

  1528. alone

  1529. who

  1530. gives

  1531. life

  1532. not

  1533. Jacob

  1534. and

  1535. not

  1536. fertility

  1537. flowers

  1538. look at

  1539. verse 17

  1540. because

  1541. God

  1542. listened

  1543. to

  1544. Leah

  1545. and

  1546. she

  1547. became

  1548. pregnant

  1549. and

  1550. bore

  1551. Jacob

  1552. a

  1553. fifth

  1554. son

  1555. and

  1556. on

  1557. it

  1558. went

  1559. and

  1560. she

  1561. had

  1562. other

  1563. sons

  1564. don't

  1565. you

  1566. think

  1567. it's

  1568. strange

  1569. that

  1570. these

  1571. fertility

  1572. flowers

  1573. were

  1574. passed

  1575. over

  1576. to

  1577. Rachel

  1578. well

  1579. she

  1580. didn't

  1581. get

  1582. pregnant

  1583. but

  1584. Leah

  1585. did

  1586. you

  1587. see

  1588. God

  1589. is

  1590. in

  1591. control

  1592. here

  1593. God

  1594. is

  1595. working

  1596. according

  1597. to

  1598. his

  1599. purposes

  1600. and

  1601. his

  1602. plans

  1603. and

  1604. what

  1605. are

  1606. those

  1607. purposes

  1608. and

  1609. plans

  1610. well

  1611. remember

  1612. what

  1613. God's

  1614. promise

  1615. has

  1616. been

  1617. all

  1618. the

  1619. way

  1620. along

  1621. God

  1622. had

  1623. promised

  1624. that

  1625. they

  1626. would

  1627. have

  1628. a

  1629. nation

  1630. that

  1631. he

  1632. would

  1633. have

  1634. a

  1635. people

  1636. for

  1637. himself

  1638. it

  1639. started

  1640. with

  1641. Abraham

  1642. your

  1643. offspring

  1644. will

  1645. be as

  1646. numerous

  1647. as

  1648. the

  1649. stars

  1650. in

  1651. the

  1652. sky

  1653. the

  1654. same

  1655. promise

  1656. was

  1657. handed

  1658. down

  1659. to

  1660. Isaac

  1661. you

  1662. will

  1663. be

  1664. fruitful

  1665. and

  1666. increase

  1667. in

  1668. numbers

  1669. Isaac

  1670. and

  1671. that

  1672. was

  1673. passed

  1674. down

  1675. to

  1676. his

  1677. son

  1678. Jacob

  1679. your

  1680. descendants

  1681. will be

  1682. like

  1683. the

  1684. dust

  1685. of

  1686. the

  1687. earth

  1688. in

  1689. sin

  1690. heaven

  1691. and

  1692. baby

  1693. Jacob's

  1694. family

  1695. is

  1696. increasing

  1697. where you

  1698. say

  1699. 12 kids

  1700. is not

  1701. quite

  1702. a

  1703. nation

  1704. no

  1705. it's

  1706. not

  1707. there

  1708. aren't

  1709. so

  1710. many

  1711. that

  1712. he

  1713. can't

  1714. count

  1715. them

  1716. all

  1717. but

  1718. nations

  1719. begin

  1720. somewhere

  1721. don't

  1722. they

1723. and right now he's got a whole clutter of kids.

1724. You see, in the midst of all the unfaithfulness,

1725. God is remaining faithful to his promise

1726. and working out his purposes.

1727. God promised a people for himself

1728. and he's going to do it.

1729. Despite all the rivalries and all the bitterness,

1730. the division and the despair,

  1731. God is at work.

1732. Now we mustn't think that God approves

1733. or condones all this family's mad behaviour,

1734. but what it is telling us is simply

  1735. that God's people, God's family,

1736. is going to be made up of broken people.

1737. Now doesn't that give us a little bit of hope?

1738. That despite all of our mess and our sinful lives

1739. and all our decisions and all our choices,

1740. God could possibly include you and me,

1741. that we could be part of his family too.

1742. God's faithfulness over the unfaithful.

1743. And then, God's grace to the disgraced.

1744. Rachel may be loved by Jacob,

1745. but her situation was not easy.

  1746. Let's go back to chapter 29, verse 31.

1747. When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved,

1748. he enabled her to conceive,

  1749. but Rachel remained childless.

  1750. Now that's always hard.

  1751. It's always painful.

1752. And especially in a culture

  1753. where a woman's value and worth

1754. was measured by how many children you had.

1755. The shame and the stigma was breaking Rachel.

1756. Yes, she had the love of her husband,

1757. but to everybody else looking in on the situation,

  1758. she was a loser.

  1759. Not fit for purpose.

1760. But instead of prayerful submission,

1761. Rachel takes things into her own hands.

  1762. She's driven by jealousy,

1763. eaten up by bitterness and angry.

  1764. She uses her servant

1765. and trades her in for her husband.

1766. Yeah, we can understand Rachel's hurt and pain,

1767. but at the same time,

1768. Rachel really isn't a nice person, is she?

1769. We might be quick to write off a Rachel,

  1770. but God...

1771. Look at verse 22 of chapter 30.

  1772. Then God remembered Rachel.

  1773. He listened to her

1774. and enabled her to conceive.

1775. It's not like that God had forgotten Rachel,

1776. that you've kind of gone absent-minded for a while

1777. and forgotten all about her.

  1778. No, when God remembers,

1779. it always points to an action of saving.

1780. God acts on behalf of the lost and the broken.

1781. We can see that back in Genesis chapter 8

    Genesis 8 chapter mention

  1782. when God remembers Noah

1783. and he intervenes and he acts to save.

  1784. And God remembers Rachel

1785. and he enables her to have a son.

1786. You see, this is God's gracious intervention.

  1787. She has a son.

  1788. Her shame is removed.

  1789. Her stigma is gone.

1790. In the words of Rachel herself,

1791. look at the end of verse 23,

1792. God has taken away my disgrace.

  1793. No longer a loser,

  1794. but a treasured person.

  1795. No longer an outsider,

  1796. but valued.

1797. You see, this is what God does.

1798. God takes away our disgrace.

1799. He takes what is worthless

1800. in the eyes of the world

1801. and gives us a position

  1802. that is immeasurable.

1803. This is the kind of God we deal with.

1804. This is beauty in the brokenness.

1805. This is how God works.

1806. This is the story of the whole Bible.

1807. In fact, what God has done for Rachel,

1808. God has done for you and for me

1809. in a greater and more eternal way

1810. than we could ever imagine.

1811. Because God sees our disgrace.

1812. He sees and knows our shame and our guilt.

1813. He sees our sinful choices,

  1814. our selfish decisions.

1815. He sees how we're crushed

1816. by the standards that others place upon us.

1817. He hears our cries as we suffer

1818. under the weight of family expectations.

  1819. He remembers us.

1820. And he intervenes and he acts on our behalf

  1821. and he saves us.

1822. He does this through his son,

  1823. Jesus Christ,

1824. the one who would come from Jacob's family.

  1825. Turn with me, please,

  1826. to Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  1827. Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  1828. Verse 6.

1829. As we think of how God has intervened

  1830. into our world,

1831. the God who longs to renew

  1832. our broken lives

1833. and restore this disordered world.

1834. Let's pick it up in verse 6.

  1835. Romans 5, verse 6.

    Romans 5:6

1836. You see, at just the right time,

1837. according to God's good plan and purposes,

1838. when we were still powerless,

1839. unable to change our situation,

1840. Christ died for the ungodly.

1841. Very rarely will anyone die

  1842. for a righteous person.

1843. Though for a good person,

1844. someone might possibly dare to die.

  1845. But God?

  1846. Well, God demonstrates

1847. his own love for us in this.

1848. While we were still sinners,

  1849. sinners,

  1850. Christ died

  1851. for you

  1852. and for me.

  1853. When we were powerless

  1854. and unloved,

  1855. when we were unfaithful,

1856. when we were enemies and sinners,

  1857. God in his love

  1858. showed grace

  1859. to the disgraced.

  1860. Because when we

  1861. humbly trust

  1862. in Jesus,

  1863. he intervenes

  1864. and he renews

  1865. and he restores

  1866. and he gives us

  1867. a brand new

  1868. status

  1869. and position.

  1870. He takes away

  1871. the shame

  1872. and the stigma.

  1873. We become

  1874. children of God,

  1875. brothers and sisters

  1876. of Jesus Christ,

  1877. broken people

  1878. made beautiful

  1879. for God's family.

  1880. We are forever

  1881. welcomed

  1882. and accepted.

  1883. A value

  1884. that no price

1885. could ever be put on us.

  1886. Our God's

  1887. loved ones.

  1888. This

  1889. is his love.

  1890. This is his mercy.

  1891. This is his faithfulness.

  1892. This is his grace

  1893. to people

  1894. like you

  1895. and me.

  1896. Hear

  1897. his voice

  1898. to you today.

  1899. I love you.

  1900. I love you.

  1901. Let's pray.

  1902. Let's pray.

  1903. Let's pray.

  1904. Let's pray.

  1905. Father,

  1906. sometimes

1907. all we can ever see

  1908. is the brokenness

  1909. all around us.

  1910. the brokenness

  1911. that has hurt us,

  1912. the brokenness

  1913. that has

  1914. affected our families

  1915. and our friendships.

  1916. But yet

  1917. in the midst

  1918. of it all,

  1919. there is a

  1920. shining light

  1921. of hope.

  1922. There is

  1923. extraordinary

  1924. beauty.

  1925. God sees,

  1926. God hears,

  1927. and God

  1928. has acted

  1929. through his son.

  1930. He has poured out

  1931. his love,

  1932. his mercy,

  1933. his faithfulness,

  1934. and his grace.

  1935. and he offers

  1936. new beginnings,

  1937. fresh starts

  1938. to all

  1939. who will trust

  1940. in him.

  1941. How can we not

  1942. but adore you

  1943. and worship you?

  1944. For you are good

  1945. and you are kind.

  1946. Thank you

  1947. for your love

  1948. to us today.

  1949. help us

  1950. that we might

  1951. show this

  1952. same love

  1953. to the broken

  1954. world around us.

  1955. In Jesus' name,

  1956. Amen.

  1957. We're going to

  1958. sing a song

  1959. of praise.

  1960. Leah called

  1961. her son

  1962. Judah,

  1963. which means

  1964. praise

  1965. because of

  1966. God's love

  1967. for you.
