  2. So, Genesis 32 is where we're at.

  3. We've been looking at the life of Jacob

  4. and his relationship with God

  5. and how God is slowly but surely changing him.

  6. And we come to a significant part in Jacob's life

  7. where God transforms him.

  8. So, we're going to read, then we're going to pray,

  9. and then look at this word together.

  10. So, let's read Genesis 32, starting at verse 22.

  11. That night, Jacob got up and took his two wives,

  12. his two female servants, his eleven sons,

  13. and crossed the ford of the Jebuk.

  14. After he'd sent them across the stream,

  15. he sent over all his possessions.

  16. So, Jacob was left alone,

  17. and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.

  18. When the man saw that he could not overpower Jacob,

  19. he touched the socket of Jacob's hip

  20. so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

  21. Then the man said,

  22. Let me go, for it is daybreak.

  23. But Jacob replied,

  24. I will not let you go unless you bless me.

  25. The man asked him,

  26. What is your name?

  27. Jacob, he answered.

  28. Then the man said,

  29. Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,

  30. because you have struggled with God

  31. and with humans and have overcome.

  32. Jacob said,

  33. Please tell me your name.

  34. But he replied,

  35. Why do you ask my name?

  36. Then he blessed him there.

  37. So Jacob called that place Peniel,

  38. saying,

  39. It is because I saw God face to face,

  40. and yet my life was spared.

  41. The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,

  42. and he was limping because of his hip.

  43. Therefore, to this day,

  44. the Israelites do not eat the tendon

  45. attached to the socket of the hip,

  46. because the socket of Jacob's hip

  47. was touched near the tendon.

  48. Well, let's pray and ask for God's help.

  49. Father, we thank you for these records,

  50. these true accounts

  51. of the life of these ancient people,

  52. the living God,

  53. the same God that we worship today,

  54. working in the lives of people just like us.

  55. And so we pray that as we look at this story together,

  56. that we would learn something

  57. about the greatness of God,

  58. how we should respond to him,

  59. and how we should trust him

  60. for grace every day.

  61. Father, be gracious to us now,

  62. and help us with your Holy Spirit's power.

  63. In a sense, we ask that you would

  64. touch us afresh,

  65. so that we know that we are meeting with you.

  66. And this we ask in Jesus' name.

  67. Amen.

  68. Well, Jacob is in a terrible mess.

  69. That's often how we found him, isn't it?

  70. Having stolen his brother Esau's blessing,

  71. he had to run for his life.

  72. Now it's some 20 years later,

  73. and Jacob is on the verge

  74. of meeting his brother Esau.

  75. Not knowing how his brother

  76. is going to respond to him,

  77. Jacob sent some messengers ahead.

  78. Have a look back at verse 6,

  79. chapter 32, verse 6.

  80. So he's getting ready to meet his brother,

  81. and he sends messengers ahead.

  82. Verse 6.

  83. When the messengers returned to Jacob,

  84. they said,

  85. we went to your brother Esau,

  86. and now he's coming to meet you.

  87. And 400 men are with him.

  88. This is no welcoming party.

  89. This is an army.

  90. Verse 7.

  91. In great fear and distress,

  92. Jacob divided the people

  93. who were with him into two groups,

  94. and the flocks and herds

  95. and camels as well.

  96. He thought,

  97. well, if Esau comes and attacks one group,

  98. the group that is left may escape.

  99. What's Esau going to do to me?

  100. Well, Jacob does what most people do

  101. in a crisis, even atheists.

  102. They cry out to God.

  103. Look at verse 10.

  104. I am unworthy of all the kindness

  105. and faithfulness you've shown your servant.

  106. Verse 11.

  107. Save me, I pray,

  108. from the hand of my brother Esau,

  109. for I am afraid

  110. he will come and attack me.

  111. Now, full marks to Jacob

  112. for crying out to God

  113. for salvation and help,

  114. because that's a good thing, right?

  115. But you know what?

  116. It can also be a painful thing.

  117. You see, when God intervenes in our life,

  118. it's not always comfortable.

  119. Sometimes it feels like a wrestle.

  120. And so after Jacob prayed,

  121. he sends on all his family

  122. and all his people

  123. and all his servants ahead of him.

  124. verse 24.

  125. So Jacob was left alone.

  126. Now, can you picture him there?

  127. In the darkness of night,

  128. filled with fear about his brother,

  129. all alone.

  130. And God spoke softly to Jacob.

  131. Don't be afraid, my son.

  132. I'm with you.

  133. No harm will come to you.

  134. Be at peace.

  135. Except that's not what happened, is it?

  136. Let's consider

  137. Jacob's wrestle.

  138. First,

  139. we are perplexed

  140. by God's ways.

  141. We're perplexed by God's ways.

  142. Verse 24.

  143. Jacob

  144. was left alone.

  145. And out of nowhere,

  146. his body slammed

  147. to the ground.

  148. A man,

  149. verse 24,

  150. wrestled with him

  151. till daybreak.

  152. Rather than resting in peace,

  153. he finds himself

  154. wrestling

  155. all night.

  156. And what's perplexing

  157. for us

  158. is the identity

  159. of this wrestler.

  160. Look at verse 28.

  161. The man said,

  162. your name will no longer

  163. be Jacob,

  164. but Israel,

  165. because

  166. you have struggled

  167. with who?

  168. With God.

  169. In fact,

  170. Jacob goes on

  171. to confirm it

  172. in verse 30.

  173. Jacob called

  174. that place

  175. Peniel,

  176. saying,

  177. it is because

  178. I saw God

  179. face to face.

  180. Now, yes,

  181. later on

  182. in other scriptures,

  183. it is referred to

  184. the angel

  185. of the Lord,

  186. a person

  187. representing God,

  188. but what we're

  189. to get here is

  190. that this is no

  191. dream or vision.

  192. This is a full-on,

  193. in-person,

  194. wrestle

  195. with God.

  196. And it seems

  197. Jacob is not

  198. going to give up

  199. too easily.

  200. Verse 25.

  201. When the man

  202. saw that he

  203. could not

  204. overpower him,

  205. when he saw

  206. that Jacob

  207. wasn't giving up,

  208. he touched

  209. the socket

  210. of Jacob's hip

  211. so that his hip

  212. was wrenched

  213. as he wrestled

  214. with the man.

  215. Now,

  216. you might be

  217. into MMA,

  218. but you know

  219. that if you're

  220. going to cause

  221. a strain

  222. to your opponent,

  223. you have to

  224. land a big

  225. heavy blow.

  226. Well,

  227. as God

  228. wrestles

  229. with Jacob,

  230. he just

  231. touches

  232. Jacob's hip

  233. and he's

  234. left with

  235. a hobble

  236. and a limp.

  237. What

  238. awesome

  239. power!

  240. With just

  241. a touch,

  242. God

  243. strikes

  244. him,

  245. God

  246. injures

  247. him,

  248. God

  249. causes

  250. him

  251. pain.

  252. Well,

  253. you say,

  254. God can't

  255. do that.

  256. Isn't

  257. God

  258. tender

  259. and gracious?

  260. Isn't

  261. God the

  262. one who's

  263. gentle

  264. and kind?

  265. No,

  266. my God

  267. doesn't do

  268. this kind

  269. of thing,

  270. but he

  271. does.

  272. It's

  273. perplexing.

  274. It's

  275. troubling.

  276. You see,

  277. it seems

  278. we can

  279. cope with

  280. a God

  281. that we

  282. invite

  283. into our

  284. presence

  285. to bring

  286. his peace,

  287. but we

  288. don't do

  289. so well

  290. with a

  291. God who

  292. invades

  293. our life

  294. and causes

  295. a fight.

  296. We like

  297. a God

  298. that we

  299. can control

  300. and a

  301. God who

  302. does what

  303. we say,

  304. but a

  305. God who

  306. comes

  307. unannounced

  308. and weakens

  309. us.

  310. Well,

  311. isn't that

  312. perplexing?

  313. Why would

  314. God

  315. wrestle with

  316. Jacob like

  317. this?

  318. Why would

  319. God

  320. touch him

  321. and cause

  322. him harm?

  323. Why take

  324. him out?

  325. God can't

  326. do that

  327. sort of

  328. thing.

  329. Well,

  330. sometimes God

  331. doesn't fit

  332. into our

  333. manageable

  334. box.

  335. Sometimes God

  336. does confront

  337. us.

  338. Sometimes God

  339. goes on the

  340. offensive.

  341. It seems

  342. God can

  343. bring

  344. discomfort

  345. and he

  346. will allow

  347. trouble so

  348. that we

  349. might face

  350. God and

  351. perhaps deal

  352. with God.

  353. Sometimes he

  354. needs to get

  355. our attention

  356. and sometimes

  357. it's in the

  358. times of

  359. wrestling

  360. that he

  361. gets it.

  362. Make no

  363. mistake,

  364. God is no

  365. more loving

  366. in times of

  367. peace and

  368. he is no

  369. less loving

  370. in times of

  371. turmoil.

  372. It's just

  373. that God

  374. works in

  375. all kinds

  376. of different

  377. ways.

  378. So first,

  379. God's ways

  380. are

  381. perplexing.

  382. second,

  383. we are

  384. transformed

  385. by God's

  386. touch.

  387. We may

  388. find God's

  389. ways

  390. perplexing

  391. but they

  392. lead to

  393. a transformed

  394. life.

  395. Look at

  396. verse 26.

  397. In the

  398. midst of the

  399. wrestle,

  400. the man

  401. said,

  402. let go

  403. for it

  404. is day

  405. break.

  406. Surrender,

  407. Jacob.

  408. Submit.

  409. But it

  410. seems Jacob

  411. isn't for

  412. letting go.

  413. He's

  414. stubborn.

  415. He's

  416. refusing to

  417. give up.

  418. Now this

  419. is a high

  420. risk strategy

  421. on Jacob's

  422. side,

  423. isn't it?

  424. Because the

  425. last time he

  426. refused to

  427. let go,

  428. he gets

  429. touched

  430. and he's

  431. severely

  432. weakened.

  433. Who knows

  434. what will

  435. happen if

  436. God touches

  437. him again?

  438. He could

  439. die.

  440. What's

  441. going on?

  442. Well this

  443. is more than

  444. just plain

  445. stubbornness and

  446. stupidity.

  447. This is an

  448. act of

  449. faith.

  450. You see,

  451. Jacob's life

  452. has been

  453. filled with

  454. struggles and

  455. fights.

  456. he's always

  457. trying to

  458. get ahead,

  459. cheating and

  460. lying to

  461. get what he

  462. wants,

  463. looking and

  464. searching for

  465. the blessed

  466. life.

  467. Now it

  468. seems God

  469. is going to

  470. struggle with

  471. Jacob.

  472. And Jacob

  473. must learn

  474. that it's

  475. not what

  476. he wants

  477. in life,

  478. but who

  479. he needs

  480. in life.

  481. Not what

  482. he wants,

  483. but who

  484. he needs.

  485. So God

  486. brings him

  487. to a place

  488. where his

  489. life is

  490. changed and

  491. transformed.

  492. There's three

  493. steps or

  494. three moves

  495. in this

  496. wrestle that

  497. show us how

  498. we can have

  499. a transformed

  500. life as we

  501. meet with

  502. God.

  503. First,

  504. submission.

  505. Again,

  506. let's read

  507. verse 26.

  508. The man

  509. said to

  510. Jacob,

  511. let me go

  512. for it is

  513. daybreak.

  514. But Jacob

  515. replied,

  516. I will

  517. not let

  518. you go

  519. unless you

  520. bless me.

  521. Jacob's

  522. not letting

  523. go,

  524. not because

  525. he thinks

  526. he's more

  527. powerful than

  528. God,

  529. but because

  530. he finally

  531. realizes that

  532. God is

  533. stronger and

  534. greater than

  535. him.

  536. All his

  537. life he's

  538. been scheming

  539. and deceiving,

  540. trying to

  541. plot and

  542. plan his

  543. own way in

  544. life.

  545. Now he

  546. finds himself

  547. in a place

  548. of weakness

  549. and helplessness.

  550. he's

  551. literally

  552. been brought

  553. to his

  554. knees.

  555. Here is a

  556. man who

  557. stopped

  558. fighting with

  559. God and

  560. has surrendered

  561. to God.

  562. So first,

  563. there's a

  564. submission.

  565. And then

  566. second,

  567. there's a

  568. confession.

  569. Verse 27.

  570. The man

  571. asked him,

  572. what's

  573. your name?

  574. Well,

  575. it seems

  576. quite a

  577. pointless

  578. question because

  579. of course

  580. God knows

  581. who he is

  582. and knows

  583. what his

  584. name is.

  585. So why

  586. ask him

  587. what his

  588. name is?

  589. Well,

  590. it seems

  591. it's to

  592. draw out

  593. of Jacob

  594. to face

  595. up to

  596. his own

  597. reality of

  598. who he

  599. is.

  600. Yes,

  601. my name

  602. is Jacob.

  603. And we

  604. know what

  605. Jacob means.

  606. He's the

  607. deceiver.

  608. The

  609. schemer.

  610. Yes,

  611. I'm a

  612. cheater

  613. and a

  614. stealer.

  615. I'm a

  616. liar and

  617. a fraud.

  618. This is

  619. who I

  620. am.

  621. I'm a

  622. sinner.

  623. Can you

  624. see that

  625. in the

  626. midst of

  627. all this

  628. wrestle,

  629. all the

  630. hiding is

  631. gone?

  632. Jacob

  633. freely

  634. admits to

  635. who he

  636. is.

  637. And

  638. then

  639. third,

  640. there is

  641. desperation.

  642. temptation.

  643. You see,

  644. through the

  645. wrestle,

  646. Jacob is

  647. confronted and

  648. challenged by

  649. God and

  650. at last,

  651. Jacob finally

  652. sees it's

  653. no longer

  654. about what

  655. he wants

  656. for himself

  657. but who

  658. he needs.

  659. Read verse

  660. 26 again,

  661. then the

  662. man said,

  663. let me go

  664. for this

  665. daybreak.

  666. But

  667. Jacob replied,

  668. I will

  669. not let

  670. go unless

  671. you bless

  672. me.

  673. I need

  674. you,

  675. God.

  676. I need

  677. your help.

  678. I need

  679. your blessing.

  680. I'm

  681. desperate

  682. for you.

  683. In fact,

  684. Jacob knows

  685. that by

  686. hanging on

  687. and not

  688. letting go,

  689. he could

  690. die.

  691. God could

  692. touch him

  693. again,

  694. but that's

  695. just how

  696. desperate he

  697. is.

  698. I need

  699. your blessing

  700. so much,

  701. I will

  702. die for

  703. it.

  704. He's

  705. desperate

  706. for God

  707. and he

  708. will do

  709. anything to

  710. experience

  711. God's

  712. blessing in

  713. his life.

  714. God's

  715. blessing in

  716. life.

  717. You see,

  718. submission

  719. and confession

  720. and a

  721. heart of

  722. desperation

  723. leads to

  724. a life of

  725. transformation.

  726. Verse 28,

  727. the man

  728. said,

  729. you will

  730. no longer

  731. be called

  732. Jacob,

  733. the deceiver,

  734. but you

  735. will now be

  736. called Israel

  737. because,

  738. well,

  739. Israel means

  740. you've

  741. struggled

  742. with God

  743. and with

  744. humans and

  745. you have

  746. overcome,

  747. you have

  748. won.

  749. Jacob is

  750. given a

  751. new name.

  752. Israel will

  753. now be

  754. your new

  755. name.

  756. This is a

  757. mark of

  758. victory.

  759. Well,

  760. that's strange,

  761. isn't it?

  762. That Jacob

  763. is overcome,

  764. that he is

  765. victorious,

  766. does that

  767. mean Jacob

  768. was somehow

  769. more powerful

  770. than God?

  771. No,

  772. Jacob didn't

  773. win because

  774. God surrendered

  775. to him.

  776. Jacob won

  777. because he

  778. surrendered to

  779. God.

  780. The purpose

  781. of the

  782. wrestle,

  783. the purpose

  784. of the

  785. touch,

  786. was to

  787. bring Jacob

  788. to a point

  789. of desperation,

  790. to bring him

  791. to his knees

  792. so that he

  793. cries out to

  794. God for

  795. mercy,

  796. bless me.

  797. Jacob won

  798. by admitting

  799. defeat.

  800. Jacob is

  801. victorious

  802. because he

  803. knew he

  804. couldn't

  805. beat God.

  806. Hosea,

  807. the prophet,

  808. later on

  809. comments on

  810. this very

  811. event.

  812. And as he

  813. speaks about

  814. Jacob,

  815. this is what

  816. he says.

  817. he's speaking

  818. of Jacob,

  819. he says,

  820. as a man,

  821. he struggled

  822. with God.

  823. He struggled

  824. with the

  825. angel and

  826. overcame

  827. him.

  828. He wept

  829. and begged

  830. for his

  831. favour,

  832. or begged

  833. for God's

  834. grace.

  835. God's

  836. love.

  837. Isn't

  838. that

  839. astonishing?

  840. Jacob

  841. overcame.

  842. Jacob

  843. won.

  844. How did

  845. he win

  846. the

  847. wrestle?

  848. By

  849. weeping

  850. and begging

  851. for grace.

  852. Jacob

  853. was victorious

  854. in his

  855. wrestle with

  856. God because

  857. Jacob was

  858. desperate

  859. for God.

  860. And so

  861. Jacob's

  862. life was

  863. transformed.

  864. Verse 29,

  865. Jacob said,

  866. please tell

  867. me your

  868. name.

  869. But he

  870. replied,

  871. why do you

  872. ask my

  873. name?

  874. He was

  875. given no

  876. answer,

  877. but he

  878. was blessed.

  879. God

  880. blessed him.

  881. Now can

  882. we begin

  883. to see

  884. that while

  885. we may

  886. be perplexed

  887. with God's

  888. touch,

  889. it can

  890. lead to a

  891. transformed

  892. life.

  893. You see,

  894. we mightn't

  895. choose the

  896. wrestle for

  897. ourselves,

  898. but sometimes

  899. God brings

  900. discomfort to

  901. his children.

  902. Sometimes he

  903. allows troubles

  904. and trials

  905. not to

  906. destroy us,

  907. but so that

  908. we would

  909. fall on our

  910. knees and

  911. cry out to

  912. God for

  913. mercy and

  914. say,

  915. bless me.

  916. God's

  917. love for

  918. you.

  919. Maybe you're

  920. in that

  921. struggle right

  922. now.

  923. There's a

  924. battle inside

  925. your heart.

  926. Maybe there's

  927. a bit of

  928. Jacob going

  929. on,

  930. living your

  931. own life

  932. and doing

  933. your own

  934. thing,

  935. out for

  936. self and

  937. always keeping

  938. God at

  939. arm's length,

  940. protecting

  941. yourself.

  942. self.

  943. But then

  944. God confronts

  945. you.

  946. He challenges

  947. you.

  948. He doesn't

  949. wait for your

  950. invitation to

  951. say,

  952. Lord,

  953. come to me,

  954. but he goes

  955. on the

  956. offensive and

  957. goes to you.

  958. You might have

  959. asked for it or

  960. want it,

  961. but God in his

  962. mercy longs for

  963. your heart.

  964. And it's a

  965. wrestle.

  966. We fight and

  967. we battle.

  968. well, the

  969. way to win

  970. that fight

  971. is to lose.

  972. The way to

  973. win is to

  974. lose.

  975. It means that

  976. we submit our

  977. life to God.

  978. We confess

  979. our sin to

  980. God.

  981. And we cry

  982. out in

  983. desperation for

  984. his mercy.

  985. It means we

  986. come weeping

  987. and begging

  988. for his

  989. grace.

  990. it means that

  991. we would be

  992. willing to

  993. even die

  994. for the

  995. blessing

  996. rather than

  997. forsake the

  998. blessing.

  999. Are you in a

  1000. fight with

  1001. God?

  1002. Are you

  1003. keeping him

  1004. at arm's

  1005. length?

  1006. The way to

  1007. win is to

  1008. lose so that

  1009. you will be

  1010. blessed,

  1011. changed,

  1012. and transformed.

  1013. So we are

  1014. perplexed by

  1015. God's ways,

  1016. but we are

  1017. transformed by

  1018. God's touch.

  1019. And then

  1020. we are

  1021. afflicted by

  1022. God's grace.

  1023. grace.

  1024. Now doesn't

  1025. that sound a

  1026. contradiction?

  1027. Afflicted by

  1028. grace?

  1029. Well, look at

  1030. verse 31.

  1031. The sun rose

  1032. above Jacob,

  1033. and he passed

  1034. Peniel, the place

  1035. where he wrestled

  1036. with God.

  1037. it's a new

  1038. day, a new

  1039. beginning.

  1040. The wrestle is

  1041. over, and with

  1042. renewed strength,

  1043. he's now ready to

  1044. face his fears

  1045. and step out

  1046. and meet his

  1047. brother.

  1048. But, look at

  1049. the rest of

  1050. verse 31.

  1051. He was

  1052. limping

  1053. because of

  1054. his hip.

  1055. Jacob's not

  1056. healed.

  1057. It's not

  1058. removed.

  1059. The injury

  1060. is left.

  1061. God's touch

  1062. upon his

  1063. life remains.

  1064. It's a daily

  1065. reminder to

  1066. Jacob that he

  1067. needs God's

  1068. grace, not

  1069. just for one

  1070. day, but

  1071. every day.

  1072. Every time he

  1073. gets up in the

  1074. morning and

  1075. hobbles to the

  1076. bathroom, every

  1077. time he gets up

  1078. on his two

  1079. feet and

  1080. limps along,

  1081. Jacob is

  1082. reminded of

  1083. his desperate

  1084. need of

  1085. God.

  1086. But isn't

  1087. that just

  1088. what Jacob

  1089. needed as

  1090. he prepared

  1091. to face his

  1092. brother?

  1093. He was in

  1094. great fear

  1095. and distress.

  1096. He was

  1097. overwhelmed.

  1098. Now he's

  1099. ready to go

  1100. and meet

  1101. him.

  1102. Every step

  1103. he takes

  1104. will be a

  1105. reminder that

  1106. God is

  1107. there.

  1108. God is

  1109. his strength.

  1110. You see,

  1111. once we

  1112. have God,

  1113. once we've

  1114. met with

  1115. God,

  1116. once we've

  1117. done business

  1118. with God,

  1119. once we've

  1120. received his

  1121. blessing,

  1122. there is

  1123. nothing to

  1124. fear.

  1125. Not the

  1126. future,

  1127. not our

  1128. life today,

  1129. not even

  1130. death itself,

  1131. no matter

  1132. what life

  1133. can throw

  1134. at us,

  1135. there is

  1136. nothing to

  1137. fear.

  1138. Sometimes we

  1139. go through

  1140. times of

  1141. struggle and

  1142. suffering.

  1143. It could be a

  1144. difficult

  1145. relationship.

  1146. It could be

  1147. a temptation

  1148. that just

  1149. keeps

  1150. reoccurring

  1151. or a

  1152. weakness.

  1153. Maybe it's

  1154. a particular

  1155. illness or

  1156. a recurring

  1157. pain.

  1158. And in the

  1159. trouble we

  1160. pray and we

  1161. ask for God

  1162. to take it

  1163. away.

  1164. We long for

  1165. things to

  1166. change to be

  1167. different.

  1168. Well,

  1169. perhaps God

  1170. will bring

  1171. about change,

  1172. but what if

  1173. he doesn't?

  1174. What if we

  1175. walk the

  1176. rest of our

  1177. days with

  1178. a limp?

  1179. I don't

  1180. pretend to

  1181. know all of

  1182. God's ways

  1183. and his

  1184. working.

  1185. But what if

  1186. that struggle,

  1187. what if

  1188. that suffering

  1189. is God's

  1190. means of

  1191. keeping us

  1192. dependent

  1193. and desperate

  1194. for him?

  1195. what if

  1196. that limp

  1197. is a

  1198. means of

  1199. knowing God's

  1200. grace and

  1201. blessing

  1202. every day?

  1203. What if

  1204. that weakness

  1205. is a means

  1206. of finding

  1207. strength

  1208. in every

  1209. fear we

  1210. face?

  1211. You see,

  1212. grace comes

  1213. to us from

  1214. God in

  1215. all kinds

  1216. of packages.

  1217. Sometimes it

  1218. comes in

  1219. healing.

  1220. sometimes it

  1221. comes in

  1222. affliction.

  1223. The

  1224. Apostle Paul

  1225. knew this,

  1226. didn't he?

  1227. Why don't we

  1228. go to 2

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  1229. Corinthians

  1230. chapter 12.

  1231. 2

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  1232. Corinthians

  1233. chapter 12.

  1234. 2

  1235. Corinthians

  1236. 12.

  1237. Here Paul

  1238. has been

  1239. speaking about

  1240. an amazing

  1241. experience he's

  1242. had with God

  1243. as he goes.

  1244. He describes

  1245. us going

  1246. into the

  1247. third heaven

  1248. and he's

  1249. just out of

  1250. this world

  1251. with his

  1252. encounter with

  1253. God.

  1254. Then he

  1255. switches gears

  1256. and then he

  1257. reminds us of

  1258. an experience

  1259. of affliction.

  1260. Verse 7.

  1261. The middle

  1262. of verse 7.

  1263. He says,

  1264. therefore,

  1265. in order to

  1266. keep me from

  1267. being conceited,

  1268. he said,

  1269. instead of

  1270. becoming proud

  1271. and becoming

  1272. self-dependent,

  1273. instead of

  1274. being God

  1275. dependent,

  1276. I was given

  1277. a thorn

  1278. in my flesh.

  1279. Now,

  1280. we don't know

  1281. what that

  1282. thorn was.

  1283. It wasn't the

  1284. kind of thorn

  1285. from a rosebush,

  1286. but perhaps a

  1287. physical disability

  1288. in his life,

  1289. maybe an

  1290. illness,

  1291. maybe a

  1292. temptation,

  1293. a weakness

  1294. in his life,

  1295. an anxiety,

  1296. a thorn

  1297. that was

  1298. painful and

  1299. difficult.

  1300. Verse 8.

  1301. Three times

  1302. I pleaded

  1303. with the Lord

  1304. to take it

  1305. away from me,

  1306. asking for

  1307. the Lord

  1308. that this

  1309. would end,

  1310. that it

  1311. would stop.

  1312. And God

  1313. answered,

  1314. verse 9,

  1315. he said

  1316. to me,

  1317. my grace

  1318. is sufficient

  1319. for you,

  1320. for my

  1321. power is

  1322. made perfect

  1323. in weakness.

  1324. Therefore,

  1325. I will boast

  1326. all the more

  1327. gladly about

  1328. my weaknesses,

  1329. my struggles,

  1330. my sufferings,

  1331. my limp,

  1332. so that

  1333. Christ's

  1334. power

  1335. may rest

  1336. on me.

  1337. that is

  1338. why,

  1339. for Christ's

  1340. sake,

  1341. I delight

  1342. in weakness.

  1343. This is a

  1344. deep

  1345. inner joy,

  1346. a sense

  1347. of peace

  1348. that in

  1349. the insults,

  1350. in the

  1351. hardships,

  1352. in the

  1353. persecutions,

  1354. in the

  1355. difficulties,

  1356. when I

  1357. am weak,

  1358. then I

  1359. am strong.

  1360. grace comes

  1361. in all

  1362. kinds of

  1363. packages.

  1364. Sometimes

  1365. it comes

  1366. in

  1367. affliction.

  1368. Not to

  1369. crush you

  1370. and destroy

  1371. you,

  1372. but so

  1373. that you

  1374. might know

  1375. that Christ

  1376. is sufficient,

  1377. that he

  1378. is enough

  1379. for you

  1380. in your

  1381. life.

  1382. Now you

  1383. might struggle

  1384. with what

  1385. we're saying

  1386. this morning.

  1387. How can

  1388. a loving

  1389. God

  1390. send

  1391. thorns

  1392. and wounds?

  1393. How can

  1394. God touch

  1395. my life

  1396. and allow

  1397. these trials

  1398. to happen

  1399. to me?

  1400. I'm not

  1401. sure if I

  1402. like this

  1403. kind of

  1404. God.

  1405. but let

  1406. me

  1407. reassure

  1408. you that

  1409. God

  1410. does

  1411. love

  1412. you.

  1413. He

  1414. loves

  1415. you

  1416. deeply.

  1417. Let me

  1418. show you.

  1419. You see,

  1420. there was

  1421. one who

  1422. came to

  1423. wrestle with

  1424. God for

  1425. us.

  1426. And you

  1427. know his

  1428. name,

  1429. Jesus

  1430. Christ,

  1431. God's

  1432. own

  1433. son.

  1434. And

  1435. Jesus

  1436. came,

  1437. he wrestled

  1438. with God's

  1439. will for

  1440. his life

  1441. for God

  1442. had sent

  1443. him to

  1444. come to

  1445. suffer a

  1446. great

  1447. suffering.

  1448. He sent

  1449. him to

  1450. die.

  1451. God's

  1452. will for

  1453. his life

  1454. was thorns

  1455. and

  1456. wounds.

  1457. And yet

  1458. Jesus

  1459. submitted

  1460. and surrendered

  1461. himself to

  1462. God.

  1463. Jesus

  1464. prayed in

  1465. the garden,

  1466. not my

  1467. will,

  1468. but your

  1469. will be

  1470. done.

  1471. And he

  1472. went to

  1473. the cross

  1474. bearing

  1475. my sin

  1476. and your

  1477. sin on

  1478. himself,

  1479. all of

  1480. our deceit,

  1481. all of

  1482. our lies,

  1483. all of

  1484. our pride.

  1485. And on

  1486. the cross

  1487. God

  1488. touched

  1489. him.

  1490. God

  1491. afflicted

  1492. him not

  1493. with a

  1494. limp,

  1495. but with

  1496. the very

  1497. judgment

  1498. of God.

  1499. Jesus

  1500. was afflicted

  1501. for our

  1502. sin.

  1503. Jesus

  1504. suffered the

  1505. thorns of

  1506. judgment so

  1507. that you

  1508. and I

  1509. would never

  1510. have to.

  1511. He faced

  1512. death.

  1513. He

  1514. overcame

  1515. death.

  1516. Jesus

  1517. won by

  1518. losing.

  1519. And so

  1520. now as we

  1521. trust in

  1522. him, we

  1523. can come to

  1524. God our

  1525. Father through

  1526. Jesus and

  1527. receive from

  1528. him grace

  1529. for all of

  1530. our troubles.

  1531. We can

  1532. come to

  1533. God in

  1534. all our

  1535. fears and

  1536. worries.

  1537. we can

  1538. freely enter

  1539. into his

  1540. presence without

  1541. any concern

  1542. whatsoever and

  1543. receive from

  1544. him his

  1545. generous kind

  1546. and good

  1547. gifts, all

  1548. that we need

  1549. for life.

  1550. You see, God

  1551. is not out to

  1552. crush you or

  1553. destroy you.

  1554. He loves

  1555. you.

  1556. And if ever

  1557. you doubt it,

  1558. look to the

  1559. cross.

  1560. and you

  1561. will find

  1562. his words.

  1563. My grace

  1564. is sufficient

  1565. for you.

  1566. And we

  1567. will be able

  1568. to say with

  1569. confidence,

  1570. when I

  1571. am weak,

  1572. then I

  1573. am strong.

  1574. Let's

  1575. pray.

  1576. our

  1577. Father God,

  1578. we confess

  1579. that sometimes

  1580. we make

  1581. you very,

  1582. very small.

  1583. we box

  1584. you in.

  1585. But sometimes

  1586. you confront

  1587. us with

  1588. your

  1589. greatness,

  1590. your glory.

  1591. And we

  1592. admit that

  1593. we do not

  1594. always understand

  1595. we find

  1596. you

  1597. perplexing,

  1598. even

  1599. troubling.

  1600. but yet

  1601. in the

  1602. midst of

  1603. our

  1604. wrestle

  1605. and

  1606. the

  1607. midst

  1608. of

  1609. our

  1610. struggle,

  1611. we find

  1612. your

  1613. goodness

  1614. and

  1615. your

  1616. kindness.

  1617. We find

  1618. that you

  1619. are working

  1620. for our

  1621. good and

  1622. for our

  1623. best.

  1624. And slowly

  1625. you are

  1626. changing us

  1627. and transforming

  1628. us.

  1629. And you

  1630. are enabling

  1631. us to

  1632. see

  1633. that from

  1634. you

  1635. comes

  1636. blessing

  1637. after

  1638. blessing.

  1639. And so

  1640. we humbly

  1641. come before

  1642. you

  1643. and we

  1644. dare to

  1645. hang on

  1646. to you,

  1647. to hold

  1648. on to

  1649. you

  1650. and cry

  1651. out,

  1652. Lord,

  1653. bless us.

  1654. Give to

  1655. us your

  1656. grace and

  1657. mercy

  1658. in our

  1659. struggle

  1660. and in

  1661. our

  1662. trial.

  1663. help us

  1664. to know

  1665. and to

  1666. experience

  1667. that your

  1668. grace is

  1669. sufficient.

  1670. Help us

  1671. to be able

  1672. to say

  1673. that when

  1674. I am

  1675. weak,

  1676. then I

  1677. am strong

  1678. because

  1679. you are

  1680. enough.

  1681. Father,

  1682. for anyone

  1683. here today

  1684. who is

  1685. finding that

  1686. battle hard,

  1687. will you

  1688. pour out

  1689. your grace

  1690. into their

  1691. life?

  1692. will you

  1693. remind them

  1694. of their

  1695. love,

  1696. your love

  1697. for them,

  1698. your care

  1699. for them?

  1700. Thank you,

  1701. God.

  1702. Amen.
