  1. Well again, welcome everyone. Good morning. It's great to have this opportunity to speak from God's Word this morning.

  2. We will be going through John chapter 21. We're going to read the chapter together through the sermon.

    John 21 chapter mention

  3. So I'm not going to read it ahead, but as we go through, we're going to read it section by section.

  4. Do you like films or books that come with an epilogue at the end of them?

  5. Do you like when a film has that little tag at the end?

  6. You know, we've just had our climactic scene. The film's all wrapped up. The story's done.

  7. But there's just this other scene, a little bonus right at the end.

  8. And maybe it's to set up the sequel, just a little teaser so that you come back next summer and buy more popcorn.

  9. But an epilogue at the end of a book or a film can do quite a bit, can't it?

  10. It can satisfy our curiosity because it can kind of pan out to the future and give us a view beyond the story.

  11. Or it can simply tie up some important loose end.

  12. It can even be a way sometimes for the author to step onto the stage and give their personal views through a character.

  13. Well, this morning I want us to read through the Apostle John's epilogue to his story of Jesus.

  14. And it does all of it.

  15. It hints at the next installment.

  16. It's going to tie up a major loose end.

  17. It's going to zoom us into the future.

  18. And it's going to allow the author to step in right at the end.

  19. It's an epic epilogue by any stretch.

  20. But more importantly in some ways,

  21. more than any epilogue of fiction or stage or film,

  22. this true epilogue draws us, the reader, into the story.

  23. This true epilogue is going to draw us in as the readers into the story.

  24. You see, there's the thinnest gap of a page of paper

  25. between what we read in John chapter 21

    John 21 chapter mention

  26. and our lives today as Christians.

  27. As John epilogues, he's asking you, you, will you follow Jesus?

  28. And will you serve others like Jesus did?

  29. So we're going to go through, as I said, the chapter together in four parts.

  30. Bigger parts going to smaller parts.

  31. But first part, the final recap of the story,

  32. the final recap story, verses 1 to 14.

  33. John has brought the main story to the end of chapter 20.

  34. And if you look at the whole Gospel of John,

  35. it began in chapter 1 with a prologue, an opening.

  36. And if we turn to chapter 1,

  37. I think it just helps us to understand the epilogue a little bit.

  38. So John's prologue in John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  39. it takes us out of our time and our space,

  40. and it reveals to us God the Son,

  41. the eternal Son,

  42. the only begotten Son of the Father,

  43. God equal with the Father.

  44. I just want to look at three verses to help us see this.

  45. So verse 1 of John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  46. In the beginning was the Word,

  47. and the Word was with God,

  48. and the Word was God.

  49. Jesus is the Word.

  50. Jump to verse 14.

  51. The Word, that is Jesus,

  52. became flesh,

  53. and made His dwelling among us.

  54. We have seen His glory,

  55. the glory of the one and only Son,

  56. who came from the Father,

  57. full of grace and truth.

  58. And jump down to verse 18.

  59. No one,

  60. no one has ever seen God,

  61. but the one and only Son,

  62. who is Himself God,

  63. and is in closest relationship with the Father.

  64. He has made Him known.

  65. So it's fitting that a story that begins with a prologue,

  66. John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  67. is going to end with this epilogue.

  68. Jesus, the God-man,

  69. that we're introduced to in chapter 1.

  70. What impact did He have in these 21 chapters?

  71. And what legacy has He left?

  72. So jump back with me, if you will,

  73. to chapter 21.

  74. Let's look at verses 1 to 3.

  75. Afterwards, Jesus appeared again to His disciples

  76. by the Sea of Galilee.

  77. It happened this way.

  78. Simon Peter,

  79. Thomas, also known as Didymus,

  80. Nathanael from Cana in Galilee,

  81. the sons of Zebedee,

  82. and two other disciples were together.

  83. I'm going out to fish,

  84. Simon Peter told them,

  85. and they said,

  86. We'll go with you.

  87. So they went out,

  88. and got into the boat,

  89. but that night they caught nothing.

  90. First one,

  91. Jesus appears,

  92. or maybe you could translate it better,

  93. reveals Himself to His disciples.

  94. The reveal happens back

  95. where many of the disciples

  96. had first met Jesus

  97. at the Sea of Galilee.

  98. Here we have,

  99. if you count them up,

  100. there's seven of the twelve

  101. are back at this lake or this sea,

  102. and they're back in a familiar setting,

  103. doing familiar things.

  104. You see,

  105. Peter and the sons of Zebedee,

  106. that's James and John,

  107. Peter, James, and John,

  108. they'd been business partners together

  109. three years previously

  110. in the fishing business.

  111. And Peter is back fishing,

  112. and the other disciples

  113. are happy to go fishing with him.

  114. Now we might be tempted

  115. to read a little bit too much

  116. into these opening verses here.

  117. So we could speculate that,

  118. Ah, Peter.

  119. Ah, old Peter.

  120. He's given up again, hasn't he?

  121. He stopped following Jesus.

  122. He's kind of taken the keys

  123. to the kingdom of God

  124. and thrown them back in

  125. through the letterbox,

  126. and on his way out,

  127. he's grabbed his fishing rod,

  128. and he's back to the lake fishing.

  129. He's given up on Jesus.

  130. But I don't think there's any

  131. real strong indication of that here.

  132. Back in chapter 20,

  133. where the main story is,

  134. Peter is the one

  135. that's running to the tomb

  136. when he hears reports

  137. that Jesus has risen.

  138. Peter is seeing the evidence

  139. firsthand for the resurrection.

  140. He's seen the empty tomb.

  141. He's seen the grave clothes

  142. that were neatly folded

  143. and put to the side.

  144. On one of Jesus' previous appearances

  145. before this third one,

  146. Jesus had commissioned the disciples,

  147. saying,

  148. As the Father has sent me,

  149. so I am sending you.

  150. They're commissioned followers of Jesus.

  151. So what do we have here?

  152. Well, I think we have the disciples.

  153. They're waiting.

  154. They're waiting for power

  155. to come from on high

  156. by the Holy Spirit

  157. to begin their mission

  158. out from Jerusalem.

  159. And Jesus also said to them

  160. that he would see them in Galilee.

  161. So while in Galilee,

  162. what else can you do?

  163. Why not go fishing?

  164. Well, fishing, verse 3,

  165. why not?

  166. Because fishing can be frustrating.

  167. So they went out

  168. and got into the boat,

  169. but that night they caught nothing.

  170. Out fishing at night.

  171. Why at night?

  172. Well, probably to have fresh fish

  173. in the morning

  174. to be able to sell at the market.

  175. But at night,

  176. it can be hard,

  177. and they waste the efforts

  178. of seven men in one night.

  179. What a frustration.

  180. And do you know what?

  181. The disciples have been here before.

  182. In Luke's Gospel of Jesus,

  183. there's another lack of fish episode.

  184. When Peter, back then,

  185. was out fishing

  186. with his business partners,

  187. and he says,

  188. we've worked hard all night,

  189. he says to Jesus,

  190. and we haven't caught anything.

  191. And in that miracle catch of fish,

  192. and it's a little spoiler,

  193. we're going to have a miracle catch here.

  194. In that miracle catch of fish in Luke,

  195. Jesus came up directly to them

  196. and told them to put out the nets again.

  197. Here, it's a little different.

  198. Jesus appears from a distance

  199. as a kind of friendly customer on the shore.

  200. Let's look at verses four to six.

  201. Early in the morning,

  202. after this frustrating night,

  203. Jesus stood on the shore,

  204. but the disciples did not realize

  205. that it was Jesus.

  206. And he called out to them,

  207. friends, haven't you any fish?

  208. No, they answered.

  209. And he said,

  210. throw your net on the right side of the boat

  211. and you will find some.

  212. When they did,

  213. they were unable to haul the net in

  214. because of the large number of fish.

  215. Friends, any fish?

  216. No.

  217. I'm sure there's a bit of frustration.

  218. All seven of them probably in unison.

  219. Do you know what?

  220. Throw your net on the right side of the boat

  221. and you'll find some.

  222. Well, do you know what they say about customers?

  223. They're always right.

  224. And who knows?

  225. Maybe there are some fish.

  226. And this man from the shore

  227. calling out,

  228. maybe he might bring some luck

  229. and if we put down the net,

  230. we'll find, you know,

  231. a fish or two.

  232. Not a total ride off of a night out fishing.

  233. So the nets go down

  234. and then there's a tug.

  235. And then there's a real tug.

  236. And then there's this frantic activity

  237. where the nets are being pulled

  238. and the waters are churning

  239. and there's flapping.

  240. All seven to the nets.

  241. Quick.

  242. Secure them.

  243. Make sure that they don't break.

  244. And haul.

  245. And haul.

  246. And pull.

  247. This isn't some lucky few fish.

  248. No, this is hitting the mother load of fish.

  249. It's another miracle catch.

  250. And then the penny drops.

  251. The penny drops for one of them.

  252. I know this fish locating power.

  253. I've seen this before.

  254. Verse seven.

  255. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved

  256. said to Peter,

  257. It's the Lord.

  258. As soon as Simon Peter heard him say,

  259. It's the Lord.

  260. Well, he wrapped his outer garment around him

  261. for he'd taken it off.

  262. And he jumped into the water.

  263. And the other disciples followed in the boat,

  264. towing the net full of fish.

  265. For they weren't far from the shore,

  266. about a hundred meters.

  267. And when they landed,

  268. they saw a fire of burning coals there

  269. with fish on it and some bread.

  270. Peter.

  271. That's not any man.

  272. That's the Lord.

  273. Peter remembers what happened before.

  274. Let down your nets.

  275. You haven't caught anything,

  276. but trust me.

  277. This is Jesus.

  278. Quick, Peter.

  279. Quick throw on the top.

  280. Leave the haul to the others.

  281. They can sort that out.

  282. Jumps out of the boat.

  283. Wades through a hundred meters

  284. to get to the man on the shore.

  285. No delay.

  286. And the others,

  287. they fall hauling the nets.

  288. And they catch up.

  289. And there's the burning coals of a fire.

  290. The friend has prepared breakfast.

  291. Verse 10.

  292. Jesus said to them,

  293. Bring some of the fish you have caught.

  294. So Simon,

  295. Peter,

  296. he climbs back into the boat

  297. and dragged the net ashore.

  298. And it was full of large fish.

  299. 153.

  300. But even with so many,

  301. the net was not torn.

  302. Jesus said to them,

  303. Come and have breakfast.

  304. None of the disciples dared to ask him,

  305. Who are you?

  306. They knew it was the Lord.

  307. Jesus came and took the bread

  308. and he gave it to them.

  309. And he did the same with the fish.

  310. And this was now the third time

  311. that Jesus had appeared to his disciples

  312. after he was raised from the dead.

  313. Bring some fish.

  314. I already have the bread baking here.

  315. No need to ask.

  316. No need to say it.

  317. This is Jesus.

  318. Their friend and their Lord.

  319. So what can we learn from this

  320. final story in the epilogue?

  321. Well, first,

  322. and most importantly,

  323. Jesus is alive.

  324. And he is still the God-man

  325. who serves his friends.

  326. And we see Jesus the man, don't we?

  327. If we look at verses 4 to 5,

  328. there's Jesus walking on a shoreline.

  329. And he's calling out to friends on a boat.

  330. And in verses 10 to 12,

  331. he's there sitting

  332. and having breakfast around the fire

  333. and saying,

  334. Let me serve you.

  335. Jesus,

  336. Jesus,

  337. Jesus,

  338. Jesus,

  339. the humble servant leader,

  340. is alive.

  341. He strolls.

  342. He calls out.

  343. He lights fires.

  344. He bakes bread.

  345. And he shares out the fish.

  346. These are the everyday things

  347. from a close,

  348. hospitable friend

  349. at the beach.

  350. You know it's good

  351. to have a friend

  352. like Jesus.

  353. Jesus.

  354. And verses 6 to 7,

  355. the command,

  356. the call to throw out the net

  357. and the miracle hall.

  358. Jesus is God.

  359. He is the maker of heaven and earth.

  360. He is the one who can walk on water.

  361. He is the one who can multiply

  362. loaves and fishes.

  363. He is the one that can arrange

  364. for 153 large fish,

  365. no minnows,

  366. no little sprats

  367. that need to be thrown back in.

  368. He can arrange for those 153 fish

  369. to be on the right side of a boat

  370. 100 meters away.

  371. He is the one who heals

  372. others' sicknesses

  373. and their diseases.

  374. He is the one who raises himself

  375. from the dead

  376. after three days

  377. never to die.

  378. The one, remember in John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  379. the one and only son

  380. who is himself God

  381. and is in closest relationship

  382. to the Father.

  383. what a friend we have in Jesus.

  384. The old hymn says,

  385. can we find a friend

  386. so faithful,

  387. so true,

  388. one who knows

  389. our sorrows

  390. and our cares,

  391. who even as our risen Lord

  392. is willing to serve us,

  393. to call us

  394. and to help us.

  395. Fishing

  396. can be frustrating

  397. all night

  398. with nothing to show

  399. and so can our efforts

  400. to provide for our family.

  401. They can be slow,

  402. they can be barely making ends meet,

  403. always feeling there is more

  404. that we should

  405. or that we could do.

  406. And some of us know

  407. or have known

  408. the struggle of

  409. stocking a fridge,

  410. of dealing with a broken tap,

  411. of affording

  412. a visit to the doctor.

  413. Where the world

  414. and its systems

  415. would let us down,

  416. where there are no fish

  417. to show,

  418. do we hear the voice

  419. from the shore

  420. call to us,

  421. friend,

  422. the voice that says,

  423. do not worry.

  424. Your heavenly Father

  425. knows that you need

  426. these things,

  427. but seek His kingdom,

  428. follow me

  429. and all these things

  430. will be added to you.

  431. A voice that calls out to us,

  432. cast out your nest

  433. again in faith.

  434. But He's also the one

  435. who lights the fire,

  436. the one who shares His bread,

  437. the one who

  438. supernaturally provides

  439. with a miracle catch,

  440. but also provides

  441. through these very

  442. ordinary means.

  443. The one who gives Himself

  444. as Lord of heaven and earth

  445. and the one who gives Himself

  446. through a community of friends

  447. to help us in our need.

  448. This is the God-man.

  449. This is the Jesus

  450. who we are to become like.

  451. And so to follow Jesus

  452. is to be like Jesus.

  453. To also be the one

  454. who calls out

  455. friends from the shore

  456. to light the fire

  457. and share your bread.

  458. It sounds simple,

  459. yet here is the risen Lord

  460. doing that,

  461. just that,

  462. for His friends.

  463. John in chapter 13,

  464. He said,

  465. of Jesus,

  466. Jesus said,

  467. having loved His own

  468. who were in the world,

  469. He loved them

  470. to the end.

  471. John, of course,

  472. is talking about Jesus

  473. going to the cross,

  474. Jesus laying down

  475. His life for His friends.

  476. The love of Jesus,

  477. only something that God,

  478. the Son,

  479. could do.

  480. Love to the end.

  481. And by His death

  482. on the cross,

  483. we are invited

  484. to confess our sins,

  485. to put our faith in Him

  486. and to follow Him.

  487. And if that is news

  488. to you this morning,

  489. that is good news.

  490. Jesus loves you.

  491. Jesus died for you

  492. and calls you

  493. to follow Him.

  494. Also in that very same chapter,

  495. John talking about

  496. Jesus loving to the end,

  497. he also said what it was

  498. to follow Jesus.

  499. Jesus said,

  500. a new command I give you,

  501. love one another.

  502. As I have loved you,

  503. so you must love one another.

  504. And by this,

  505. everyone will know

  506. that you are my disciples

  507. if you love one another.

  508. And so this

  509. final recap story

  510. is Jesus,

  511. the Master,

  512. showing the disciples

  513. what practical

  514. friendship

  515. and love

  516. looks like.

  517. And the Master

  518. has much

  519. for each of us

  520. to do.

  521. You see,

  522. each one of us

  523. is called

  524. to friendship

  525. with Him

  526. over a lifetime

  527. of service.

  528. And not all paths,

  529. not all our paths

  530. following Jesus

  531. are going to look

  532. the same.

  533. And we are going

  534. to listen in

  535. on Jesus'

  536. call on Peter

  537. along with getting

  538. a hint

  539. of what is going

  540. to happen

  541. to the Apostle John

  542. as well.

  543. So first,

  544. let's listen in

  545. as we follow

  546. Jesus and Peter

  547. as they are walking

  548. along the shore here.

  549. Let's listen in

  550. to what their exchange is.

  551. Verse 15.

  552. When they had finished

  553. eating,

  554. Jesus said

  555. to Simon Peter,

  556. Simon,

  557. son of John,

  558. do you love me

  559. more than these?

  560. Yes, Lord,

  561. he said,

  562. you know that I love you.

  563. Jesus said,

  564. feed my lambs.

  565. Again,

  566. Jesus said,

  567. Simon,

  568. son of John,

  569. do you love me?

  570. He answered,

  571. yes, Lord,

  572. you know that I love you.

  573. Jesus said,

  574. take care

  575. of my sheep.

  576. The third time

  577. he said to him,

  578. Simon,

  579. son of John,

  580. do you love me?

  581. Well,

  582. Peter was hurt

  583. because Jesus asked

  584. him the third time,

  585. do you love me?

  586. He said,

  587. Lord,

  588. you know all things.

  589. You know

  590. that I love you.

  591. Jesus said,

  592. feed my sheep.

  593. Very truly,

  594. I tell you,

  595. when you were younger,

  596. you dressed yourself

  597. and you went

  598. where you wanted,

  599. but when you were old,

  600. you will stretch

  601. out your hands

  602. and someone else

  603. will dress you

  604. and lead you

  605. where you do not

  606. want to go.

  607. Jesus said this

  608. to indicate

  609. the kind of death

  610. by which Peter

  611. would glorify God.

  612. Then he said to him,

  613. follow me.

  614. Peter was the first

  615. of the seven

  616. to reach the shore.

  617. He didn't want to wait

  618. to haul the fish in.

  619. He wanted to get to Jesus.

  620. But I wonder

  621. as he waded

  622. closer and closer

  623. through the water

  624. that he noticed

  625. the already burning coals

  626. of the fire

  627. on the shoreline.

  628. And if those coals

  629. gave him a flashback

  630. of that night

  631. that he failed

  632. to be a friend

  633. to Jesus.

  634. You see,

  635. the last time

  636. burning coals

  637. were mentioned

  638. by John

  639. in his gospel,

  640. it was the night

  641. that Jesus

  642. was betrayed.

  643. the night

  644. his friends

  645. fled,

  646. the night

  647. he was arrested,

  648. the night

  649. he was brought

  650. before an illegal

  651. trial

  652. of the Jewish

  653. leaders.

  654. And Peter

  655. followed from a distance

  656. and when that trial

  657. was happening

  658. at the high priest's

  659. courtyard,

  660. Peter was there

  661. from a distance

  662. warming himself

  663. and his hands

  664. on a fire

  665. of coals

  666. outside

  667. the high priest's

  668. courtyard

  669. as Jesus

  670. was being tried.

  671. Peter said,

  672. Lord,

  673. they might all

  674. abandon you,

  675. but not I.

  676. I will never

  677. deny you.

  678. But we know

  679. from our own

  680. weak hearts

  681. it's only Jesus

  682. that truly

  683. loves to the end.

  684. You see,

  685. Peter's

  686. love

  687. failed

  688. at a critical

  689. point.

  690. Peter

  691. denied

  692. Jesus

  693. around the

  694. coals

  695. three times

  696. in one night.

  697. And so

  698. here we have

  699. this

  700. three-fold

  701. questioning

  702. now

  703. of Peter.

  704. Do

  705. you

  706. love

  707. me

  708. from Jesus?

  709. And each

  710. of the three

  711. times

  712. is to

  713. cut open

  714. again

  715. the wound

  716. that Peter

  717. carries

  718. for his

  719. three

  720. denials.

  721. Why?

  722. Why would

  723. Jesus

  724. the friend

  725. cut open

  726. that wound?

  727. Well,

  728. so that the

  729. self-inflicted

  730. wound that

  731. Peter carries

  732. with him

  733. can be

  734. properly

  735. dressed

  736. and properly

  737. stitched

  738. by a

  739. master

  740. physician.

  741. Jesus

  742. cuts

  743. the wound

  744. three

  745. times,

  746. one for

  747. each

  748. denial.

  749. Each

  750. cut is

  751. to

  752. replace

  753. regret

  754. with

  755. restoration,

  756. to

  757. replace

  758. failure

  759. with

  760. calling.

  761. And

  762. healing

  763. comes

  764. from

  765. each

  766. of

  767. those

  768. three

  769. times

  770. that

  771. Peter

  772. responds

  773. with,

  774. you

  775. know

  776. that I

  777. do.

  778. And each

  779. reply

  780. from

  781. Jesus

  782. of

  783. feed

  784. and

  785. care

  786. for

  787. the

  788. sheep

  789. all

  790. brings

  791. healing

  792. and

  793. restoration

  794. and

  795. leads

  796. to the

  797. end

  798. of

  799. verse

  800. 19,

  801. those

  802. last

  803. two

  804. words,

  805. follow

  806. me.

  807. You see,

  808. love for

  809. Jesus means

  810. loving

  811. like

  812. Jesus.

  813. Following

  814. Jesus means

  815. being a

  816. friend

  817. like

  818. Jesus.

  819. Jesus

  820. and

  821. so

  822. Peter,

  823. for

  824. Peter,

  825. that

  826. means

  827. feeding

  828. the

  829. sheep

  830. like

  831. Jesus

  832. did.

  833. Jesus

  834. is

  835. the

  836. good

  837. shepherd.

  838. And

  839. so

  840. Peter

  841. here

  842. is

  843. called

  844. to

  845. pastor

  846. the

  847. flock,

  848. the

  849. lambs

  850. of

  851. verse

  852. 15,

  853. the

  854. sheep

  855. of

  856. 16

  857. and

  858. 17.

  859. He

  860. is

  861. to

  862. feed

  863. them

  864. from

  865. the

  866. word

  867. and

  868. to

  869. care

  870. for

  871. them.

  872. Now

  873. we

  874. can

  875. feel

  876. the

  877. hurt

  878. of

  879. Peter

  880. in

  881. verse

  882. 17.

  883. Peter

  884. was

  885. hurt

  886. because

  887. Jesus

  888. asked

  889. him

  890. the

  891. third

  892. time.

  893. But

  894. I think

  895. it's

  896. important

  897. to

  898. think

  899. through

  900. what

  901. this

  902. hurt

  903. is.

  904. I

  905. don't

  906. think

  907. it's

  908. hurt

  909. because

  910. of

  911. Jesus

  912. but

  913. because

  914. of

  915. his

  916. recollection

  917. of

  918. his

  919. own

  920. sin.

  921. The

  922. hurt

  923. comes

  924. from

  925. sin.

  926. The

  927. healing

  928. comes

  929. from

  930. Jesus.

  931. We

  932. might

  933. fall

  934. and

  935. cut

  936. ourselves

  937. badly

  938. but

  939. to

  940. plaster

  941. it

  942. up

  943. ourselves

  944. or

  945. to

  946. go

  947. to

  948. an

  949. amateur

  950. physician

  951. will

  952. leave

  953. a

  954. scar.

  955. The

  956. deep

  957. cuts

  958. need

  959. the

  960. master

  961. surgeon

  962. to

  963. apply

  964. his

  965. skill

  966. in

  967. making

  968. them

  969. right.

  970. And

  971. so

  972. the

  973. cutting

  974. from

  975. the

  976. hands

  977. of

  978. our

  979. friend

  980. Jesus

  981. makes

  982. neat

  983. our

  984. mess

  985. and

  986. leaves

  987. a

  988. glorious

  989. mark

  990. not

  991. an

  992. ugly

  993. scar.

  994. So

  995. do

  996. you

  997. take

  998. the

  999. questions

  1000. of

  1001. Jesus

  1002. by

  1003. the

  1004. conviction

  1005. of

  1006. his

  1007. spirit

  1008. seriously?

  1009. The

  1010. questions

  1011. that

  1012. you

  1013. hear

  1014. from

  1015. him

  1016. do

  1017. you

  1018. love

  1019. me?

  1020. And

  1021. when

  1022. the

  1023. hurt

  1024. of

  1025. your

  1026. sin

  1027. is

  1028. there

  1029. do

  1030. you

  1031. mourn?

  1032. And

  1033. are

  1034. you

  1035. hurt

  1036. over

  1037. your

  1038. own

  1039. sin?

  1040. As

  1041. you

  1042. delve

  1043. deeper

  1044. into

  1045. anger

  1046. in

  1047. your

  1048. soul

  1049. towards

  1050. the

  1051. brother

  1052. in

  1053. Christ

  1054. who

  1055. you

  1056. can't

  1057. face

  1058. do

  1059. you

  1060. hear

  1061. the

  1062. spirit

  1063. of

  1064. Christ

  1065. this

  1066. morning

  1067. asking

  1068. do

  1069. you

  1070. love

  1071. me?

  1072. what's

  1073. in

  1074. your

  1075. heart

  1076. what's

  1077. on

  1078. your

  1079. lips

  1080. yes

  1081. Lord

  1082. well

  1083. the

  1084. Lord

  1085. says

  1086. show

  1087. me

  1088. feed

  1089. my

  1090. sheep

  1091. care

  1092. for

  1093. my

  1094. flock

  1095. light

  1096. my

  1097. fires

  1098. welcome

  1099. my

  1100. servants

  1101. share

  1102. your

  1103. bread

  1104. if you

  1105. love

  1106. me

  1107. serve

  1108. if you

  1109. love

  1110. me

  1111. care

  1112. love

  1113. one

  1114. another

  1115. with what

  1116. I

  1117. have

  1118. given

  1119. you

  1120. and

  1121. have

  1122. called

  1123. you

  1124. to

  1125. you

  1126. see

  1127. Jesus

  1128. is

  1129. not

  1130. cruel

  1131. the

  1132. wounds

  1133. of

  1134. sin

  1135. we

  1136. carry

  1137. they're

  1138. not

  1139. delivered

  1140. by

  1141. his

  1142. hand

  1143. but

  1144. in

  1145. his

  1146. control

  1147. they

  1148. can

  1149. be

  1150. restitched

  1151. in

  1152. his

  1153. kindness

  1154. ultimately

  1155. our

  1156. life

  1157. of

  1158. service

  1159. leads

  1160. to

  1161. some

  1162. kind

  1163. of

  1164. destiny

  1165. and

  1166. that

  1167. destiny

  1168. will

  1169. be

  1170. on

  1171. Jesus

  1172. terms

  1173. not

  1174. on

  1175. yours

  1176. first

  1177. 18

  1178. feeding

  1179. the

  1180. sheep

  1181. would

  1182. lead

  1183. Peter

  1184. to

  1185. being

  1186. led

  1187. away

  1188. by

  1189. others

  1190. to

  1191. his

  1192. death

  1193. church

  1194. tradition

  1195. has

  1196. it

  1197. that

  1198. is

  1199. his

  1200. hands

  1201. were

  1202. stretched

  1203. out

  1204. because

  1205. like

  1206. his

  1207. savior

  1208. he

  1209. died

  1210. on

  1211. a

  1212. Roman

  1213. cross

  1214. John's

  1215. gospel

  1216. John

  1217. writes

  1218. here

  1219. probably

  1220. after

  1221. Peter's

  1222. death

  1223. so

  1224. John

  1225. can

  1226. look

  1227. back

  1228. in

  1229. this

  1230. epilogue

  1231. and

  1232. show

  1233. that

  1234. it

  1235. was

  1236. all

  1237. part

  1238. of

  1239. the

  1240. master's

  1241. plan

  1242. to

  1243. glorify

  1244. God

  1245. Peter's

  1246. death

  1247. but

  1248. Lord

  1249. you

  1250. might

  1251. ask

  1252. with

  1253. Peter

  1254. in

  1255. verse

  1256. 21

  1257. what

  1258. about

  1259. someone

  1260. else's

  1261. destiny

  1262. or

  1263. what

  1264. about

  1265. me

  1266. what

  1267. do

  1268. you

  1269. have

  1270. in

  1271. store

  1272. for

  1273. me

  1274. Lord

  1275. in

  1276. this

  1277. life

  1278. of

  1279. service

  1280. let's

  1281. read

  1282. verse

  1283. 20

  1284. to

  1285. 24

  1286. Peter

  1287. turned

  1288. and saw

  1289. that the

  1290. disciple

  1291. whom

  1292. Jesus

  1293. loved

  1294. was

  1295. following

  1296. them

  1297. this

  1298. was

  1299. the

  1300. one

  1301. who

  1302. had

  1303. leaned

  1304. back

  1305. against

  1306. Jesus

  1307. at

  1308. the

  1309. supper

  1310. and

  1311. said

  1312. Lord

  1313. who

  1314. is

  1315. going

  1316. to

  1317. betray

  1318. you

  1319. when

  1320. Peter

  1321. saw

  1322. him

  1323. he

  1324. asked

  1325. Lord

  1326. what

  1327. about

  1328. him

  1329. Jesus

  1330. answered

  1331. if

  1332. I

  1333. want

  1334. him

  1335. to

  1336. remain

  1337. alive

  1338. until

  1339. I

  1340. return

  1341. what

  1342. is

  1343. that

  1344. to

  1345. you

  1346. you

  1347. must

  1348. follow

  1349. me

  1350. because

  1351. of

  1352. this

  1353. the

  1354. rumor

  1355. spread

  1356. among

  1357. the

  1358. believers

  1359. that

  1360. this

  1361. disciple

  1362. would

  1363. not

  1364. die

  1365. but

  1366. Jesus

  1367. did

  1368. not

  1369. say

  1370. that

  1371. he

  1372. would

  1373. not

  1374. die

  1375. he

  1376. only

  1377. said

  1378. if

  1379. I

  1380. want

  1381. him

  1382. to

  1383. remain

  1384. alive

  1385. until

  1386. I

  1387. return

  1388. what

  1389. is

  1390. that

  1391. to

  1392. you

  1393. so

  1394. they're

  1395. walking

  1396. along

  1397. and

  1398. Peter's

  1399. pointing

  1400. back

  1401. at

  1402. the

  1403. disciple

  1404. whom

  1405. Jesus

  1406. loved

  1407. and

  1408. this

  1409. is

  1410. an

  1411. enigmatic

  1412. character

  1413. who's

  1414. never

  1415. named

  1416. in the

  1417. gospel

  1418. but

  1419. pops

  1420. up

  1421. at

  1422. key

  1423. points

  1424. the

  1425. disciple

  1426. whom

  1427. Jesus

  1428. loved

  1429. and

  1430. the

  1431. consensus

  1432. is

  1433. that

  1434. this

  1435. is

  1436. a

  1437. reference

  1438. to

  1439. the

  1440. apostle

  1441. John

  1442. the

  1443. author

  1444. of

  1445. this

  1446. gospel

  1447. one

  1448. of

  1449. the

  1450. sons

  1451. of

  1452. Zebedee

  1453. one

  1454. of

  1455. Peter's

  1456. fishing

  1457. partners

  1458. now

  1459. John

  1460. is

  1461. writing

  1462. towards

  1463. the

  1464. end

  1465. of the

  1466. first

  1467. century

  1468. and

  1469. he

  1470. outlived

  1471. Peter

  1472. by many

  1473. years

  1474. so

  1475. rumors

  1476. begin

  1477. to

  1478. circulate

  1479. that

  1480. this

  1481. disciple

  1482. is

  1483. never

  1484. going

  1485. to

  1486. die

  1487. he's

  1488. going

  1489. to

  1490. stay

  1491. alive

  1492. until

  1493. Jesus

  1494. returns

  1495. so

  1496. John

  1497. in

  1498. verse

  1499. 23

  1500. is

  1501. setting

  1502. the

  1503. record

  1504. straight

  1505. that's

  1506. not

  1507. actually

  1508. what

  1509. Jesus

  1510. said

  1511. but

  1512. the

  1513. key

  1514. for us

  1515. is

  1516. actually

  1517. verse

  1518. 22

  1519. why

  1520. is

  1521. it

  1522. that

  1523. one

  1524. path

  1525. following

  1526. Jesus

  1527. leads

  1528. to

  1529. a

  1530. shortened

  1531. life

  1532. and

  1533. martyrdom

  1534. and

  1535. another

  1536. path

  1537. seemingly

  1538. to

  1539. a

  1540. long

  1541. life

  1542. what

  1543. does

  1544. Jesus

  1545. say

  1546. in

  1547. verse

  1548. 22

  1549. what

  1550. is

  1551. that

  1552. to

  1553. you

  1554. you

  1555. must

  1556. follow

  1557. me

  1558. listen

  1559. to

  1560. Jesus

  1561. with

  1562. both

  1563. ears

  1564. not

  1565. with

  1566. one

  1567. ear

  1568. directed

  1569. towards

  1570. what

  1571. others

  1572. are

  1573. being

  1574. called

  1575. to

  1576. he

  1577. is

  1578. the

  1579. master

  1580. and

  1581. friend

  1582. who

  1583. has

  1584. called

  1585. you

  1586. your

  1587. call

  1588. is

  1589. individual

  1590. how

  1591. he

  1592. blesses

  1593. gifts

  1594. and

  1595. extends

  1596. or

  1597. shortens

  1598. the life

  1599. of another

  1600. in their

  1601. service

  1602. to him

  1603. that's

  1604. all

  1605. in his

  1606. masterful

  1607. hands

  1608. thankfully

  1609. in the

  1610. end

  1611. both

  1612. Peter

  1613. and

  1614. John

  1615. are

  1616. loved

  1617. by

  1618. the

  1619. Lord

  1620. both

  1621. are

  1622. believers

  1623. both

  1624. live

  1625. out

  1626. faithful

  1627. lives

  1628. of

  1629. service

  1630. Peter

  1631. worries

  1632. about

  1633. the

  1634. future

  1635. for

  1636. his

  1637. friends

  1638. and

  1639. his

  1640. business

  1641. partner

  1642. John

  1643. but

  1644. he

  1645. need

  1646. not

  1647. know

  1648. the

  1649. details

  1650. he

  1651. needs

  1652. not

  1653. to

  1654. know

  1655. how

  1656. it

  1657. will

  1658. pan

  1659. out

  1660. that

  1661. of

  1662. the

  1663. three

  1664. fishermen

  1665. Peter

  1666. James

  1667. and

  1668. John

  1669. it

  1670. was

  1671. James

  1672. that

  1673. would

  1674. die

  1675. first

  1676. in

  1677. just

  1678. a few

  1679. years

  1680. in

  1681. Acts

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  1682. chapter

  1683. 15

  1684. recorded

  1685. in

  1686. the

  1687. book

  1688. of

  1689. Acts

  1690. by

  1691. the

  1692. sword

  1693. Peter

  1694. at

  1695. that

  1696. point

  1697. would

  1698. miraculously

  1699. escape

  1700. taken

  1701. out of

  1702. prison

  1703. by an

  1704. angel

  1705. and

  1706. John

  1707. himself

  1708. would

  1709. live

  1710. a long

  1711. life

  1712. until

  1713. the

  1714. end

  1715. of

  1716. the

  1717. century

  1718. you

  1719. see

  1720. to be

  1721. a

  1722. follower

  1723. of

  1724. Jesus

  1725. is

  1726. to

  1727. walk

  1728. a very

  1729. uncertain

  1730. path

  1731. but with

  1732. a very

  1733. certain

  1734. friend

  1735. we do

  1736. not know

  1737. when he

  1738. will call

  1739. us home

  1740. we do

  1741. not know

  1742. how we

  1743. will extend

  1744. or shorten

  1745. our ministry

  1746. or our

  1747. service of

  1748. him

  1749. or our

  1750. service of

  1751. others

  1752. or what

  1753. may come

  1754. tomorrow

  1755. but we

  1756. know that

  1757. we follow

  1758. him

  1759. the servant

  1760. king

  1761. the god

  1762. man

  1763. our lord

  1764. and our

  1765. brother

  1766. do

  1767. do

  1768. you

  1769. love

  1770. him

  1771. then

  1772. you

  1773. must

  1774. follow

  1775. me

  1776. is

  1777. what

  1778. he

  1779. says

  1780. and

  1781. this

  1782. is

  1783. really

  1784. the

  1785. final

  1786. bit

  1787. the

  1788. invitation

  1789. of

  1790. verse

  1791. 25

  1792. Jesus

  1793. did

  1794. many

  1795. other

  1796. things

  1797. as

  1798. well

  1799. if

  1800. every

  1801. one

  1802. of

  1803. them

  1804. were

  1805. written

  1806. down

  1807. I

  1808. suppose

  1809. that

  1810. even

  1811. the

  1812. whole

  1813. world

  1814. would

  1815. not

  1816. have

  1817. room

  1818. for

  1819. the

  1820. books

  1821. that

  1822. would

  1823. be

  1824. written

  1825. this

  1826. is

  1827. the

  1828. best

  1829. ending

  1830. to

  1831. the

  1832. best

  1833. epilogue

  1834. ever

  1835. the

  1836. epilogue

  1837. has given

  1838. us

  1839. one

  1840. more

  1841. story

  1842. it

  1843. shown

  1844. us

  1845. Jesus

  1846. to

  1847. be

  1848. the

  1849. risen

  1850. friend

  1851. and

  1852. God

  1853. man

  1854. forever

  1855. Jesus

  1856. on

  1857. the

  1858. shore

  1859. still

  1860. making

  1861. a meal

  1862. for his

  1863. friends

  1864. from a

  1865. miraculous

  1866. catch of

  1867. fish

  1868. and

  1869. calling

  1870. them

  1871. to

  1872. follow

  1873. him

  1874. and

  1875. each

  1876. one

  1877. is

  1878. called

  1879. each

  1880. one

  1881. to a

  1882. different

  1883. path

  1884. with

  1885. all

  1886. paths

  1887. leading

  1888. to

  1889. glory

  1890. in

  1891. his

  1892. masterful

  1893. hands

  1894. you can

  1895. see

  1896. John

  1897. could

  1898. never

  1899. capture

  1900. in pen

  1901. all that

  1902. Jesus

  1903. did

  1904. or said

  1905. or impacted

  1906. during

  1907. his time

  1908. they're

  1909. short

  1910. the 21

  1911. chapters

  1912. but the

  1913. books

  1914. of

  1915. Jesus

  1916. are still

  1917. being

  1918. written

  1919. each

  1920. born

  1921. again

  1922. believer

  1923. continues

  1924. the

  1925. story

  1926. of what

  1927. Jesus

  1928. is

  1929. doing

  1930. and

  1931. what

  1932. he

  1933. has

  1934. done

  1935. the

  1936. life

  1937. of

  1938. Christ

  1939. through

  1940. his

  1941. church

  1942. through

  1943. his

  1944. people

  1945. is

  1946. being

  1947. worked

  1948. out

  1949. in

  1950. his

  1951. followers

  1952. in

  1953. you

  1954. and

  1955. in

  1956. I

  1957. you

  1958. are

  1959. the

  1960. continuation

  1961. of

  1962. this

  1963. story

  1964. carrying

  1965. out

  1966. his

  1967. work

  1968. in

  1969. the

  1970. world

  1971. the

  1972. epilogue

  1973. does

  1974. not

  1975. end

  1976. so

  1977. follow

  1978. him

  1979. today

  1980. be

  1981. a

  1982. friend

  1983. tend

  1984. to

  1985. the

  1986. sheep

  1987. help

  1988. to

  1989. write

  1990. the

  1991. books

  1992. of

  1993. Jesus

  1994. that

  1995. are

  1996. going

  1997. to

  1998. fill

  1999. the

  2000. earth

  2001. this

  2002. is

  2003. his

  2004. open

  2005. epilogue

  2006. that

  2007. will

  2008. continue

  2009. into

  2010. eternity

  2011. who

  2012. knows

  2013. some

  2014. of

  2015. those

  2016. beside

  2017. you

  2018. might

  2019. even

  2020. remain

  2021. alive

  2022. until

  2023. his

  2024. return

  2025. but

  2026. what

  2027. is

  2028. that

  2029. to

  2030. you

  2031. you

  2032. must

  2033. follow

  2034. him

  2035. let's

  2036. pray

  2037. our

  2038. father

  2039. we

  2040. thank

  2041. you

  2042. that

  2043. you

  2044. sent

  2045. Jesus

  2046. to

  2047. be

  2048. our

  2049. friend

  2050. to

  2051. be

  2052. our

  2053. savior

  2054. to

  2055. be

  2056. our

  2057. master

  2058. and

  2059. lord

  2060. forgive

  2061. us

  2062. father

  2063. for when

  2064. we are

  2065. not a

  2066. friend

  2067. to

  2068. Jesus

  2069. not a

  2070. friend

  2071. to

  2072. one

  2073. another

  2074. help

  2075. us

  2076. to

  2077. follow

  2078. afresh

  2079. to

  2080. rest

  2081. in

  2082. the

  2083. hands

  2084. of

  2085. the

  2086. master

  2087. to

  2088. learn

  2089. from

  2090. him

  2091. to

  2092. be

  2093. a

  2094. blessing

  2095. help

  2096. us

  2097. to

  2098. follow

  2099. closely

  2100. all

  2101. the

  2102. days

  2103. that

  2104. you

  2105. have

  2106. given

  2107. us

  2108. for

  2109. your

  2110. glory

  2111. and

  2112. for

  2113. our

  2114. good

  2115. amen

  2116. thank you

  2117. Ralph

  2118. just

  2119. as

  2120. we

  2121. honoring

  2122. ancestor

  2123. vos

  2124. my

  2125. believe

  2126. me
