  1. Good morning everybody.

  2. If you could open your Bibles to 1 Kings chapter 22, the last chapter of 1 Kings.

    1 Kings 22 chapter mention

  3. 1 Kings and verse 51.

  4. This is on page 366 of the Red Church Bible.

  5. 366.

  6. So it's 1 Kings chapter 22 and verse 51.

    1 Kings 22 chapter mention

  7. And while you're turning there, just a little bit of context.

  8. 1 and 2 Kings were actually originally one full book.

  9. They were split in two.

  10. At some point, for ease of access.

  11. But, yeah, it's a full narrative.

  12. And we're diving right into the middle of it today.

  13. And so just to set the context in that.

  14. After leading the Israelites out of slavery.

  15. God has given his people the land of Canaan.

  16. But, after about 300 years, the kingdom is split in two, sadly.

  17. We have Judah to the south.

  18. We have Israel to the north.

  19. Which is the setting of our text today.

  20. And the book, in its entirety, basically tells us about the kings, obviously, of these two kingdoms.

  21. And the real thing about it is whether these kings are going to listen to and accept God's word.

  22. Or are they going to reject it?

  23. That's the test, basically, for each king.

  24. So, I think it's a very relevant word for us today.

  25. Because, as we live in a liberal society, which has largely brushed aside God's word as irrelevant and outdated,

  26. this passage is very relevant to us.

  27. Because we're going to hear about a king and his attitude towards God's word, too.

  28. And what we're going to do is we're going to read the passage piece by piece today.

  29. Rather than reading the whole thing at the start, we're going to read it bit by bit to kind of build attention a little bit.

  30. Nobody likes spoilers.

  31. If you meet me on the way into Omniplex and Manpoint.

  32. And don't tell me the storyline of the film, if you want to be my friend afterwards.

  33. So, yeah, we're going to build attention.

  34. And if you do know the story, no spoilers for the person beside you.

  35. But, yeah, let's pray.

  36. Let's commit this time to the Lord now.

  37. Holy Spirit, we come needy.

  38. When we come asking you for your help.

  39. To see the wonderful things that you have to say to us today through your word.

  40. And it's not all easy to take.

  41. So give us grace to love your word and not to run from it.

  42. Amen.

  43. Well, let's start at 1 Kings 22, verse 51.

    1 Kings 22:51

  44. And we're going to continue then into the next book, 2 Kings, and read most of the first chapter.

  45. So, verse 51.

  46. Ahaziah, son of Ahab, became king of Israel in Samaria in the 17th year of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.

  47. And he reigned over Israel for two years.

  48. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  49. Because he followed the ways of his father and mother and of Jeroboam, son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin.

  50. He served and worshipped Baal and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, just as his father had done.

  51. Skip over the page.

  52. After Ahab's death, Moab rebelled against Israel.

  53. We'll pause there.

  54. Can you imagine how the headlines would have read in those days?

  55. Probably pretty similar to those in Ukraine at the start of last year.

  56. Breaking news.

  57. Moab is gathering troops along the border.

  58. Israel, prepare for war.

  59. And we can imagine the nation in a state of panic as fathers and sons dust down their weapons for battle.

  60. Women and children filled with fear at the prospect of what might happen to their loved ones.

  61. In times of peril, what the people of God need is a ruler who will bring them a word from God of security and of hope.

  62. But what did they find?

  63. Let's read verse 2.

  64. Now Ahaziah, the king, had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself.

  65. So he sent messengers saying to them,

  66. Go and consult Baal-Zibbub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury.

  67. Their king has taken a rather embarrassing tumble.

  68. And rather than worrying about the impending war in his nation,

  69. he's asking a false god if he's going to get better soon.

  70. It really is that pathetic.

  71. The real crisis for Israel in this story is not that their king has an injury.

  72. It's not even that their enemies have declared war.

  73. The real crisis is that their leader, instead of seeking a word of hope from God for his people,

  74. is seeking a word of affirmation from a false god for himself.

  75. Things are not good in Israel.

  76. And by the way, Ahaziah should have known what his job was as the king of God's people.

  77. God had given him a list of instructions.

  78. You can look at those in Deuteronomy chapter 27.

    Deuteronomy 27 chapter mention

  79. I'm just going to summarize them here.

  80. A, don't make any idols out of sex, money, or power.

  81. And B, write out God's word.

  82. Read it every day.

  83. Do it every day.

  84. Don't turn away from God's word.

  85. That was his job as king.

  86. He was supposed to show the rest of the nation how to listen to and apply God's word.

  87. Now, obviously, we're not getting those vibes from Ahaziah here.

  88. In fact, Ahaziah kept pushing out God's word and looking for another word he wanted to hear.

  89. A word that affirmed what he said was right.

  90. And now, before we start saying, oh, how foolish Ahaziah, did you not read all the instructions?

  91. We need to realize that we're just like him.

  92. We keep pushing out God's word and looking for another word that we want to hear.

  93. A word that affirms what we say is right over and above what God says is right.

  94. We consistently don't believe that God's word really does give us life.

  95. We think something else is going to give us something better.

  96. And that's a big problem for Ahaziah and for you and for me because this is what the Bible calls idolatry.

  97. Which is when we look to something or someone else for our ultimate security, love and joy apart from God.

  98. And the result of idolatry is plain obvious.

  99. Spend your lifetime choosing other things over God.

  100. And when this life ends, God will simply give you what you've always wanted in this life for eternity.

  101. Life apart from him.

  102. Away from his presence.

  103. A reality that the Bible calls hell.

  104. So, from the outset, let's just establish this.

  105. We, like Ahaziah, are in ultimate danger.

  106. Because of our idolatry.

  107. Because we don't listen to God's word.

  108. What hope is there for us?

  109. Well, as this story unfolds, we're going to see how Ahaziah responds to God's word.

  110. And ultimately, the refuge that we can find in God's final word.

  111. His son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  112. So, first of all, God speaks his word in mercy.

  113. Let's read on the story.

  114. Verse 3.

  115. But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite.

  116. Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them.

  117. Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zibbub, the god of Ekron?

  118. Therefore, this is what the Lord says.

  119. Therefore, this is what the Lord says.

  120. You will not leave the bed you are lying on.

  121. You will certainly die.

  122. So, Elijah went.

  123. And when the messengers returned to the king, he asked them,

  124. Why have you come back?

  125. A man came to meet us, they replied.

  126. And he said to us,

  127. Go back to the king who sent you and tell him.

  128. This is what the Lord says.

  129. Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending messengers to consult Baal-Zibbub, the god of Ekron?

  130. Therefore, you will not leave the bed you are lying on.

  131. You will certainly die.

  132. Wow.

  133. God chooses to intervene.

  134. And he does it through his prophet, Elijah, the man at that time who God chose to carry his word to the people.

  135. And as Elijah stops the king's messengers in their tracks on the way to Baal,

  136. what is crystal clear is that God will not tolerate Ahaziah's idolatry.

  137. And let's be clear, this is not God overreaching here or meddling in his personal affairs.

  138. It's God being merciful to Ahaziah.

  139. God knew that Baal-Zibbub was nothing more than a statue of gold

  140. and no more able to speak words of truth and comfort than a brick wall.

  141. So God graciously intervenes.

  142. He gives Ahaziah one last chance to turn to his life-giving words.

  143. We could say God is mercifully intolerant of our idolatry.

  144. Listen closely to the way God asks the question of Ahaziah.

  145. This is repeated three times, so we've got to listen up to this.

  146. Verse 3.

  147. Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending messengers to consult Baal-Zibbub?

  148. The answer is obvious.

  149. Yes!

  150. Yes, Ahaziah does have a God in Israel who has fought all their battles and rescued them from slavery.

  151. It's as foolish as if my son, when feeling hungry,

  152. were to walk out the front door and start rummaging through the bin for something good to eat.

  153. I would walk out the door and look at him and ask,

  154. is it because you don't have a dad who loves you and who has a fridge full of food

  155. that you've chosen to look in the bin for something to eat?

  156. How ridiculous would that be?

  157. You'd never do that.

  158. Or, what if there was a world-renowned heart surgeon with her clinic on your very street?

  159. Just imagine that for a second.

  160. And one morning you wake up with an unusual heart tremor.

  161. So you immediately get up to get some help,

  162. but you walk straight past the heart clinic

  163. and into your hairdresser to ask her advice on how to fix the problem.

  164. If your heart surgeon found out, she would rightly ask,

  165. is it because you don't have a world-renowned heart surgeon on your street

  166. that you're going to your hairdresser to get advice on that heart problem?

  167. How ridiculous would that be?

  168. We would never do that, right?

  169. And yes, we do this all the time when it comes to God's Word.

  170. We know God's words are always true,

  171. saving us and giving us life everlasting,

  172. but we routinely don't want to hear it.

  173. Why?

  174. Because these words are also lovingly convicting.

  175. God knows that sin destroys our joy in Him.

  176. The writer of Hebrews captures it like this.

  177. You can look at it on the board.

  178. For the Word of God is alive and active,

  179. sharper than any double-edged sword.

  180. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit,

  181. joints and marrow.

  182. It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

  183. You see, Ahaziah is just showing us

  184. what's really going on in our own hearts.

  185. We want it our way,

  186. and we don't want anyone to get in our way.

  187. And if God's Word is going to do that,

  188. if it's going to get in our way,

  189. then we're going to turn instead to a podcast or a book

  190. or a friend who's going to tell us exactly what we want to hear,

  191. a word that will affirm what we say is true and good.

  192. And just like he asked Ahaziah,

  193. God is asking you and he's asking me today,

  194. is it because you don't have a God

  195. who speaks life-giving words

  196. that you are turning to an empty word

  197. to affirm what you say is true?

  198. God didn't allow Ahaziah to continue his idolatry and peace.

  199. He graciously interrupted it.

  200. There is love in his anger against our sin.

  201. And as God invites Ahaziah to return

  202. to the true security and hope of his Word

  203. over empty promises,

  204. so he invites us.

  205. But let's keep going in this story.

  206. How is Ahaziah going to respond to God's warning?

  207. Read from verse 7.

  208. The king asked them,

  209. What kind of man was it who came to meet you and told you this?

  210. They replied,

  211. He had a garment of hair

  212. and had a leather belt round his waist.

  213. The king said,

  214. That was Elijah the Tishbite.

  215. Then he sent to Elijah a captain

  216. with his company of 50 men.

  217. The captain went up to Elijah,

  218. who was sitting on the top of a hill,

  219. and said to him,

  220. Man of God, the king says,

  221. Come down.

  222. Elijah answered the captain,

  223. If I am a man of God,

  224. may fire come down from heaven

  225. and consume you and your 50 men.

  226. Then fire fell from heaven

  227. and consumed the captain and his men.

  228. At this,

  229. the king sent to Elijah

  230. another captain with his 50 men.

  231. The captain said to him,

  232. Man of God,

  233. this is what the king says,

  234. Come down at once.

  235. If I am a man of God,

  236. Elijah replied,

  237. May fire come down from heaven

  238. and consume you and your 50 men.

  239. Then the fire of God fell from heaven

  240. and consumed him and his 50 men.

  241. Well, after Isaiah figures out

  242. the identity

  243. of this speaker of God's word,

  244. there wasn't really any debate necessary.

  245. There's only one thing on his mind.

  246. Destroy him.

  247. Destroy Elijah.

  248. And with Elijah,

  249. God's word.

  250. So what does Isaiah do?

  251. Well,

  252. he summons the troops.

  253. He sends him off

  254. to bring Elijah back

  255. and very soon Elijah

  256. will be saying his last words.

  257. But,

  258. God intervenes.

  259. And two sets of troops

  260. are consumed by fire.

  261. And this is a shocking judgment.

  262. It jars us.

  263. And we do struggle

  264. to understand why.

  265. Maybe it seems like an overreaction.

  266. Why did God have to do it this way?

  267. And you know,

  268. it's good that we ask those questions

  269. of the text.

  270. Not saying we're going to

  271. completely understand it.

  272. But there are some things

  273. we can understand

  274. about why God

  275. may have chosen

  276. this course of action.

  277. And I think

  278. two main things

  279. that stand out are this.

  280. A.

  281. God's word

  282. will always endure.

  283. Elijah was

  284. about to be killed.

  285. And God had to protect

  286. his word

  287. from being destroyed.

  288. Therefore,

  289. this intervention

  290. was necessary.

  291. He was protecting

  292. his servant

  293. and his word.

  294. And that should

  295. encourage us.

  296. God's word

  297. cannot

  298. be

  299. silenced.

  300. Kings and governments

  301. may try to eradicate it.

  302. Society may write laws

  303. to push it out.

  304. And they may see

  305. temporary success,

  306. but they can never

  307. truly silence

  308. God's word.

  309. In fact,

  310. Jesus promised us

  311. in Matthew

    Matthew 24:14

  312. chapter 24

  313. verse 14.

  314. He said,

  315. this gospel of the kingdom

  316. will be preached

  317. in the whole world

  318. as a testimony

  319. to

  320. all

  321. nations.

  322. nations.

  323. And then the end

  324. will come.

  325. We can bank our lives

  326. in that happening.

  327. So,

  328. A,

  329. God's word

  330. will always endure.

  331. Maybe another reason

  332. why God

  333. took this course

  334. of action

  335. would be this.

  336. God's word

  337. is always

  338. supreme.

  339. It's no coincidence

  340. that God

  341. responds with fire

  342. to Ahaziah's

  343. contempt.

  344. Baalzebub

  345. was actually

  346. known as

  347. the god

  348. of fire

  349. to the people

  350. who worshipped

  351. him at that time.

  352. So,

  353. God is effectively

  354. saying,

  355. I'll show

  356. you fire.

  357. This is really

  358. a statement

  359. from God

  360. to Ahaziah

  361. and the whole

  362. nation.

  363. He makes

  364. a mockery

  365. out of Baal.

  366. He shows

  367. Baal to be

  368. completely false.

  369. And in doing

  370. this,

  371. the whole of

  372. Israel

  373. would know

  374. that God

  375. is the true

  376. God.

  377. And it's true

  378. in our lives

  379. also that

  380. every word

  381. contradicting

  382. God's word

  383. will ultimately

  384. fail us.

  385. Whether it's

  386. the empty

  387. promises

  388. of satisfaction

  389. from sinful

  390. indulgence,

  391. the empty

  392. promises of

  393. fulfillment

  394. from a

  395. romantic

  396. relationship,

  397. the empty

  398. promises of

  399. happiness

  400. from having

  401. more and more

  402. followers,

  403. likes,

  404. gadgets,

  405. stuff,

  406. all these

  407. words will

  408. ultimately

  409. fail us

  410. and leave

  411. us empty

  412. in the

  413. end.

  414. And they

  415. never

  416. come through

  417. on their

  418. promises.

  419. But not

  420. with God's

  421. word.

  422. Everything

  423. God promises

  424. you in

  425. his word

  426. is true

  427. and you

  428. can bank

  429. your life

  430. on it.

  431. When he

  432. promises

  433. freedom

  434. from sin,

  435. deep-rooted

  436. joy in the

  437. midst of

  438. pain,

  439. an

  440. inheritance

  441. forever

  442. in heaven,

  443. it's all

  444. real

  445. and true

  446. and it

  447. completely

  448. surpasses

  449. all the

  450. other empty

  451. words we

  452. look to

  453. for life.

  454. We can

  455. bank our

  456. lives on

  457. it.

  458. So first,

  459. God speaks

  460. his word

  461. in mercy.

  462. Second,

  463. he protects

  464. his word

  465. eternally.

  466. And third,

  467. God fulfills

  468. his word

  469. unfailingly.

  470. And we're

  471. reaching the

  472. climax of

  473. the story.

  474. It's getting

  475. tense.

  476. Ahaziah has

  477. had every

  478. opportunity to

  479. repent.

  480. What now?

  481. He's throwing

  482. all the toys

  483. out of the

  484. pram.

  485. He's making

  486. every effort

  487. possible to

  488. try and

  489. destroy God's

  490. word and

  491. we can see

  492. it's coming

  493. up embarrassingly

  494. short.

  495. Will he

  496. repent?

  497. Well, it

  498. doesn't look

  499. like it.

  500. Look in

  501. verse 13.

  502. So the

  503. king sent

  504. a third

  505. captain with

  506. his fifty

  507. men.

  508. This

  509. third

  510. captain went

  511. up and

  512. fell on his

  513. knees before

  514. Elijah.

  515. Man of

  516. God, he

  517. begged,

  518. please have

  519. respect for

  520. my life and

  521. the lives of

  522. these fifty

  523. men, your

  524. servants.

  525. See, fire

  526. has fallen

  527. from heaven

  528. and consumed

  529. the first

  530. two captains

  531. and all

  532. their men.

  533. But now,

  534. have respect

  535. for my

  536. life.

  537. The

  538. angel of

  539. the Lord

  540. said to

  541. Elijah,

  542. go down

  543. with him,

  544. do not be

  545. afraid of

  546. him.

  547. So Elijah

  548. got up and

  549. went down

  550. with him

  551. to the

  552. king.

  553. He told

  554. the king,

  555. this is

  556. what the

  557. Lord says.

  558. Is it

  559. because there

  560. is no

  561. God in

  562. Israel for

  563. you to

  564. consult that

  565. you have

  566. sent messengers

  567. to consult

  568. Baal

  569. Zibbub,

  570. the god

  571. of Ekron?

  572. Because you

  573. have done

  574. this, you

  575. will never

  576. leave the

  577. bed you

  578. are lying

  579. on.

  580. You will

  581. certainly

  582. die.

  583. And so

  584. he died

  585. according

  586. to the

  587. word of

  588. the Lord

  589. that

  590. Elijah

  591. had

  592. spoken.

  593. The

  594. application

  595. is quite

  596. simple,

  597. isn't it?

  598. God

  599. fulfills

  600. his word

  601. unfailingly.

  602. What he

  603. says will

  604. happen,

  605. will happen.

  606. Ahaziah died

  607. because God

  608. said he

  609. would.

  610. No matter

  611. how hard

  612. Ahaziah fought

  613. to destroy

  614. God's

  615. word,

  616. God

  617. could not

  618. be stopped

  619. from fulfilling

  620. all of his

  621. holy purposes.

  622. God had

  623. seen how

  624. Ahaziah,

  625. leader of

  626. God's

  627. people,

  628. lived his

  629. whole life

  630. pushing out

  631. God's

  632. word,

  633. looking for

  634. another word

  635. he wanted

  636. to hear,

  637. a word that

  638. affirmed what

  639. he said

  640. was right.

  641. His reign

  642. only lasted

  643. two years.

  644. He was

  645. judged for

  646. his sin.

  647. But where

  648. does this

  649. all leave

  650. us?

  651. Because

  652. we've already

  653. established that

  654. we have the

  655. very same

  656. heart tendency

  657. as Ahaziah.

  658. If Ahaziah

  659. met that

  660. end,

  661. same in

  662. store for

  663. us.

  664. Well,

  665. he lived in

  666. a time

  667. before Jesus

  668. and we

  669. might say he

  670. had God's

  671. word in an

  672. earlier form.

  673. Hebrews

  674. says it

  675. well,

  676. it's on

  677. the board.

  678. In the

  679. past,

  680. God spoke

  681. to our

  682. ancestors

  683. through the

  684. prophets

  685. at many

  686. times and

  687. in various

  688. ways.

  689. But in

  690. these last

  691. days,

  692. he has

  693. spoken to

  694. us by

  695. his

  696. son,

  697. whom he

  698. appointed

  699. heir of

  700. all things

  701. and through

  702. whom he

  703. also made

  704. the universe.

  705. The

  706. son is

  707. the

  708. radiance

  709. of God's

  710. glory and

  711. the exact

  712. representation

  713. of his

  714. being,

  715. sustaining

  716. all things

  717. by his

  718. powerful

  719. word.

  720. Jesus

  721. is God's

  722. ultimate

  723. word.

  724. Everything

  725. God wanted

  726. to say,

  727. he said

  728. it through

  729. Jesus.

  730. And think

  731. about Jesus'

  732. life on

  733. earth.

  734. In John

  735. 14,

  736. he says,

  737. I love

  738. the

  739. Father and

  740. do exactly

  741. what my

  742. Father has

  743. commanded me.

  744. You see,

  745. Jesus lived

  746. the perfect

  747. life of

  748. obedience to

  749. God's word

  750. that we

  751. have all

  752. failed to

  753. live.

  754. And yet,

  755. as he

  756. suffered in

  757. agony on

  758. the cross,

  759. what did he

  760. cry out?

  761. He said,

  762. my God,

  763. my God,

  764. why have

  765. you forsaken

  766. me?

  767. Now,

  768. how could a

  769. person who

  770. lived a

  771. perfect life

  772. of obedience

  773. to God's

  774. word,

  775. find himself

  776. in a position

  777. where he

  778. separated from

  779. God's

  780. love?

  781. Well,

  782. the answer

  783. is that as

  784. Jesus hung

  785. there,

  786. he was

  787. taking your

  788. place and

  789. mine.

  790. We

  791. deserved to

  792. be there

  793. for our

  794. rejection of

  795. God's

  796. word and

  797. turning to

  798. another word

  799. that we

  800. wanted to

  801. hear.

  802. So we

  803. should get

  804. what we

  805. wanted,

  806. separation

  807. from God

  808. forever.

  809. But Jesus

  810. took the

  811. fire of

  812. God's

  813. judgment

  814. that we

  815. deserved.

  816. He was

  817. separated from

  818. the Father

  819. so that we

  820. could come

  821. close forever.

  822. And that is

  823. the best

  824. news that

  825. we ever

  826. hear.

  827. so what

  828. should our

  829. response be

  830. to this

  831. Jesus,

  832. God's

  833. final word?

  834. Well,

  835. I think it

  836. should be

  837. something like

  838. that of the

  839. captains,

  840. the third

  841. captain,

  842. I mean.

  843. Notice how

  844. different his

  845. approach is to

  846. God's word as

  847. it was spoken

  848. through Elijah.

  849. Look back at

  850. verse 13.

  851. Verse 13.

  852. This third

  853. captain went

  854. up and

  855. fell on his

  856. knees before

  857. Elijah.

  858. Man of

  859. God, he

  860. begged,

  861. please have

  862. respect for

  863. my life and

  864. the lives of

  865. these fifty

  866. men, your

  867. servants.

  868. See, fire has

  869. fallen from

  870. heaven and

  871. consumed the

  872. first two

  873. captains and

  874. all their

  875. men, but

  876. now have

  877. respect for

  878. my life.

  879. This

  880. captain falls

  881. on his

  882. knees.

  883. He begs

  884. for mercy.

  885. He pleads

  886. for a

  887. salvation that

  888. he knows

  889. his king

  890. and people

  891. don't

  892. deserve.

  893. And so

  894. likewise, we

  895. come on

  896. our knees

  897. before God's

  898. final word,

  899. Jesus Christ.

  900. We look to

  901. him for

  902. mercy.

  903. We look to

  904. the cross in

  905. faith and

  906. believe that

  907. Jesus really

  908. did take all

  909. our sin on

  910. himself there.

  911. we look to

  912. the empty

  913. tomb in

  914. faith and

  915. we see our

  916. risen Savior

  917. who has

  918. swallowed up

  919. our death

  920. forever.

  921. We humble

  922. ourselves before

  923. him as our

  924. king and we

  925. present our

  926. lives as

  927. living sacrifices

  928. to him in

  929. thankfulness.

  930. God's

  931. God's

  932. final word

  933. is asking

  934. you and

  935. I and

  936. every other

  937. person on

  938. this planet

  939. is this.

  940. Will you

  941. accept

  942. Jesus,

  943. God's

  944. final word

  945. or will

  946. you

  947. reject him?

  948. And if

  949. you're not

  950. yet a

  951. follower of

  952. Christ,

  953. let me just

  954. say there's

  955. no more

  956. important decision

  957. that you can

  958. ever make.

  959. And don't

  960. say, oh,

  961. I don't need

  962. to think about

  963. that right

  964. now.

  965. I've got

  966. time in

  967. my life to

  968. make that

  969. decision at

  970. a later

  971. point.

  972. You don't

  973. even know

  974. that you

  975. have tomorrow.

  976. How foolish

  977. to ignore the

  978. warning of

  979. God's judgment

  980. like Ahaziah

  981. did.

  982. Accepting

  983. or rejecting

  984. Jesus is the

  985. difference between

  986. eternal life

  987. with God

  988. or eternal

  989. separation from

  990. him.

  991. if we

  992. reject Christ,

  993. God will

  994. simply give

  995. us what

  996. we've chosen

  997. in this

  998. life for

  999. eternity.

  1000. Hear the

  1001. warning.

  1002. But if

  1003. you do

  1004. accept God's

  1005. final word,

  1006. Jesus,

  1007. trusting in

  1008. him for

  1009. your salvation,

  1010. you are

  1011. transferred from

  1012. death to

  1013. life.

  1014. And if

  1015. that is you

  1016. today,

  1017. and if you

  1018. have run

  1019. into the

  1020. refuge that

  1021. is Christ,

  1022. you don't

  1023. need to

  1024. fear losing

  1025. him.

  1026. God is

  1027. holding onto

  1028. you despite

  1029. your continued

  1030. struggle with

  1031. sin.

  1032. As Paul

  1033. reminds us in

  1034. 2 Timothy,

  1035. if we are

  1036. faithless,

  1037. he is

  1038. faithful.

  1039. And how

  1040. can God do

  1041. this?

  1042. Well,

  1043. he can do

  1044. it because

  1045. our sin has

  1046. been paid

  1047. for by

  1048. Christ.

  1049. Christ.

  1050. So,

  1051. that can

  1052. no longer

  1053. separate us

  1054. from God.

  1055. We don't

  1056. have to fear

  1057. that we

  1058. might lose

  1059. him when

  1060. we fail.

  1061. Now,

  1062. of course,

  1063. it is foolish

  1064. of us to

  1065. run to the

  1066. empty promises

  1067. of other

  1068. words over

  1069. God's word.

  1070. And we do

  1071. this, even

  1072. as followers

  1073. of Christ,

  1074. we are

  1075. doing this

  1076. daily.

  1077. And whenever

  1078. we do it,

  1079. we simply

  1080. lose out

  1081. on true

  1082. joy,

  1083. security,

  1084. and hope.

  1085. It is like

  1086. rummaging

  1087. through a

  1088. bin for

  1089. something good

  1090. to eat,

  1091. while standing

  1092. beside an

  1093. open fridge

  1094. full of

  1095. fresh food.

  1096. You see,

  1097. once we

  1098. become

  1099. children of

  1100. God,

  1101. the fight

  1102. to stay

  1103. in God's

  1104. word is

  1105. the fight

  1106. for joy.

  1107. joy.

  1108. We don't

  1109. get lasting

  1110. joy anywhere

  1111. else.

  1112. The empty

  1113. promises of

  1114. our idols

  1115. will always

  1116. let us

  1117. down.

  1118. But what

  1119. can comfort

  1120. us or

  1121. fill us

  1122. with hope

  1123. like God's

  1124. unshakable

  1125. promises in

  1126. his word?

  1127. Nothing

  1128. can.

  1129. I want

  1130. to finish

  1131. with some

  1132. verses from

  1133. Psalm

  1134. 119.

  1135. They're going

  1136. to come up

  1137. on the

  1138. board here.

  1139. We could

  1140. probably say

  1141. that the

  1142. writer of

  1143. this psalm

  1144. was the

  1145. opposite of

  1146. King Ahaziah

  1147. because he

  1148. understood the

  1149. superior treasures

  1150. of God's

  1151. word.

  1152. He had

  1153. developed an

  1154. insatiable

  1155. appetite for

  1156. them.

  1157. And he

  1158. shows us how

  1159. we can develop

  1160. these spiritual

  1161. taste buds

  1162. too by

  1163. meditating on

  1164. God's

  1165. word and

  1166. asking God

  1167. for his

  1168. help and

  1169. his grace

  1170. to love

  1171. his word.

  1172. I've just

  1173. picked out

  1174. four verses.

  1175. Verse 97.

  1176. Oh, how

  1177. I love

  1178. your law.

  1179. I meditate

  1180. on it

  1181. all day

  1182. long.

  1183. How sweet

  1184. are your

  1185. words to

  1186. my taste,

  1187. sweeter than

  1188. honey to

  1189. my mouth.

  1190. your word

  1191. is a

  1192. lamp for

  1193. my feet,

  1194. a light

  1195. on my

  1196. path.

  1197. Your

  1198. statutes

  1199. are my

  1200. heritage

  1201. forever.

  1202. They are

  1203. the joy

  1204. of my

  1205. heart.

  1206. It

  1207. seems

  1208. that

  1209. you and

  1210. I are

  1211. far too

  1212. easily

  1213. pleased

  1214. with rummaging

  1215. through the

  1216. bin looking

  1217. for scraps

  1218. of empty

  1219. promises that

  1220. will never

  1221. satisfy.

  1222. When all

  1223. the while,

  1224. a fully

  1225. stocked

  1226. fridge packed

  1227. with delicious

  1228. promises that

  1229. you can bank

  1230. your life on

  1231. stands open

  1232. right beside

  1233. you.

  1234. The choice

  1235. is yours.

  1236. Scraps

  1237. or a

  1238. feast.

  1239. Empty

  1240. words

  1241. are God's

  1242. life-giving

  1243. word.

  1244. Let's

  1245. pray.

  1246. Let's

  1247. pray.

  1248. Holy

  1249. Spirit,

  1250. we turn

  1251. to you

  1252. now.

  1253. we can't

  1254. suddenly just

  1255. want God's

  1256. word more

  1257. than the

  1258. empty promises

  1259. of other

  1260. things.

  1261. It's not

  1262. in us.

  1263. We need

  1264. a heart

  1265. change.

  1266. We need

  1267. an appetite

  1268. change so

  1269. that we

  1270. find your

  1271. words and

  1272. your promises

  1273. more delightful

  1274. and true

  1275. and satisfying

  1276. than any

  1277. other

  1278. lesser

  1279. words.

  1280. give us

  1281. grace today

  1282. and tomorrow

  1283. each day

  1284. we live

  1285. to choose

  1286. Jesus

  1287. and find

  1288. our ultimate

  1289. joy in

  1290. him

  1291. and for

  1292. his glory

  1293. we pray.

  1294. Amen.

  1295. Amen.

  1296. We are

  1297. going to

  1298. sing a

  1299. song.
