  1. From there this morning, so Psalm 6, let's read together.

  2. It says, O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath.

  3. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing.

  4. Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled.

  5. My soul also is greatly troubled.

  6. But you, O Lord, how long?

  7. Turn, O Lord, deliver my life.

  8. Save me for the sake of your steadfast love.

  9. For in death there is no remembrance of you.

  10. In Sheol, who will give you praise?

  11. I am weary with my moaning.

  12. Every night I flood my bed with tears.

  13. I drench my couch with weeping.

  14. My eye wastes away because of grief.

  15. It grows weak because of all my foes.

  16. Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.

  17. The Lord has heard my plea.

  18. The Lord accepts my prayer.

  19. All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled.

  20. They shall turn back and be put to shame in a moment.

  21. And as we come to God's word this morning, let's just pray together as we open God's word together.

  22. Let's pray.

  23. Father God, we thank you for your word.

  24. We thank you for this Psalm of David, Father.

  25. Father, we thank you that we can read your word in our own language as well and that we can understand it.

  26. Lord, we just pray as we open your word this morning that you would help us to understand more and more.

  27. By your spirit, would you illuminate the words that we read this morning.

  28. Father, would you speak through me this morning with the words that I say be from you and be your words, Lord.

  29. Help us and change our lives through your word this morning.

  30. It's in Jesus' name we pray.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. We live in a world that's full of pain, full of distress, full of hearty, death, sorrow, disruption and corruption, don't we?

  34. We live in a hard and broken world and we've been reminded of that recently in recent events that have gone on, both here in Carragalline but also in passage in the last week.

  35. We know that this world is hard and it's broken.

  36. And in your personal lives, I'm sure that you felt that this world is hard, this world is broken.

  37. Maybe you're struggling with a physical illness or maybe even a sinful temptation or maybe you're mourning the loss of a loved one.

  38. But you know that this world is hard.

  39. And David knew that this world was hard.

  40. And when he wrote this Psalm of the Ment in Psalm 6, he knew that this world was hard.

  41. But there is still good news, even in this hard world, even in this difficult world, there is still good news.

  42. And that good news is that God invites us to cry out to him in the midst of our distress.

  43. God invites us to cry out to him in this broken world, in the midst of this distress.

  44. And he hears us.

  45. And that's what I want you to see today.

  46. I want you to see that you can cry out to the Lord in your distress and he will hear you.

  47. Cry out to the Lord in your distress and he will hear you.

  48. So as we come to this first section in Psalm 6,

  49. in verse 3, David mentions that he's greatly troubled.

  50. He says, my soul is also greatly troubled.

  51. So today, as we look at this first section,

  52. you're going to see that you can cry out to the Lord when you are greatly troubled.

  53. I'm going to read from verses 1 to 3 again.

  54. In verse 1 it says,

  55. O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath.

  56. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing.

  57. Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled.

  58. My soul also is greatly troubled.

  59. But you, O Lord, how long?

  60. David is greatly troubled.

  61. He is greatly troubled in this first section of the Psalm.

  62. But why is he greatly troubled?

  63. Well, in verse 1 we see that he pleads to the Lord not to rebuke him and not to discipline him.

  64. Not to rebuke him and not to discipline him.

  65. And one thing that we know is that God needs to rebuke and discipline his people

  66. only because of their imperfections.

  67. Only because of their sinful actions.

  68. Only because of sin in their lives.

  69. God needs to rebuke and discipline his people sometimes because of that.

  70. And David might be in the midst of that rebuke and discipline right now as he writes the Psalm.

  71. He might be feeling the weight of that.

  72. And we know that God rebukes or, well, he disciplines us as his people because of our sin.

  73. And he disciplines every single one of us in the same way that a loving father would discipline their child.

  74. But that discipline, it never feels good in the moment when we're being disciplined.

  75. And David knows that that discipline doesn't feel good in that moment.

  76. So as David's dealing with this sin problem, as he's dealing and going through this rebuke and this discipline from the Lord,

  77. he then starts to ask for God's grace.

  78. He needs God's grace in the midst of this discipline, in the midst of this difficulty, in the midst of this sin problem.

  79. Look at verse 2.

  80. Instead of saying, do not discipline and do not rebuke, he is now saying, do give grace and do heal.

  81. He is using more positive wording in the second verse.

  82. Do give grace and do heal me, Lord.

  83. Heal me from what?

  84. Well, he says that he's weak.

  85. He says that he is languishing.

  86. At least in my translation, he says languishing.

  87. I didn't know what that word meant.

  88. But essentially, languishing means like this, like just completely unable because of your weakness.

  89. You cannot move.

  90. You're just completely weak.

  91. It's like an exaggerated weakness.

  92. So in the midst of this weakness, David cries to the Lord to give him grace and help.

  93. David knows that even in this weakness, he can cry out to the Lord and God will give him grace.

  94. He has hope that God will give him grace.

  95. That's why he cries out to the Lord.

  96. But this weakness and this pain, it goes further than just this languishing word that he uses.

  97. He says, my bones are troubled and my soul also is greatly troubled.

  98. David is describing his entire being.

  99. His bones and his soul are completely troubled.

  100. They are completely broken.

  101. He is broken.

  102. He is weak.

  103. He is broken.

  104. This reminds me of like curling up in a ball, right?

  105. When you're so weak and you can't move and you curl up in a ball and you don't know what to do with yourself.

  106. But in that weakness, David cries out to God.

  107. He cries out to God.

  108. David's a man of God, isn't he?

  109. We know that throughout the Bible.

  110. David is a man of God and he has an understanding of God's grace.

  111. He knows that God's grace is the only thing that he needs to sustain him and help him when he's greatly troubled in this weakness.

  112. Maybe you, like me, have felt completely weak and broken because of your sin before.

  113. Because of a sin problem in your life.

  114. Maybe there's a sin issue in your life and you keep asking God for forgiveness.

  115. Maybe you even tell God, I'm not going to do that again.

  116. I won't turn back to that.

  117. But day after day, night after night, the same struggle comes back.

  118. Maybe you're struggling with self-control or anger.

  119. Maybe it's jealousy or gossip.

  120. Maybe you're struggling with a specific sin problem in your life.

  121. Does that sin problem make you weak?

  122. And do you ever try to get through that sin problem with your own strength?

  123. I think that's one of the urges that we, as humans, that's one of the things we kind of lean towards,

  124. is trying to get through our sin problems with our own strength.

  125. Don't we?

  126. We try to sort it all out ourselves.

  127. We try to be the problem solver.

  128. Right?

  129. I love flying.

  130. I love flying.

  131. I love traveling.

  132. I love going to other countries.

  133. I love seeing the world.

  134. But there's one part in flying that I don't like.

  135. And that part is the turbulence.

  136. And my brain goes straight to the worst thing that could possibly happen.

  137. The worst thing that could possibly happen would be if I heard, if we felt this turbulence,

  138. and I heard a massive loud noise, and then this alarm starts blaring,

  139. and then before we know it, we're plummeting towards the earth.

  140. And it's thrown back on my seat.

  141. Time freezes.

  142. Imagine if that was happening, right?

  143. Time freezes.

  144. You're thrown back on your seat.

  145. There's nothing you can do.

  146. But then your brain starts to go, how can I get out of this?

  147. How can I save myself?

  148. It would be quite ridiculous.

  149. Maybe I can crawl out onto the wing and steer the steering flaps to fix the plane.

  150. Or maybe I can get out to the engine and I can fix the problem that's going on.

  151. Maybe I could even walk up to the cockpit with no flying experience whatsoever

  152. and pull us out of this mess.

  153. That would be pretty ridiculous, wouldn't it?

  154. It would be pretty ridiculous.

  155. Now the only person that you could turn to in that moment, right,

  156. as the plane's plummeting towards the earth,

  157. the only person you could turn to would be the pilot.

  158. Would be the pilot in the cockpit,

  159. because the pilot in the cockpit is the person who has control of the plane,

  160. has all the knowledge of what's going on in the plane,

  161. and knows exactly what's going on.

  162. He's worked with these, or they've worked with these planes all their lives,

  163. and they know what's going on.

  164. And they're the only ones that you can look to to save you.

  165. And it's similar with your sin.

  166. We can't fix our sin by ourselves.

  167. We can't fix our sin problems by ourselves.

  168. Only God, by his grace,

  169. only the one who created you,

  170. who knows all things,

  171. and knows who you are,

  172. only he can help you by his grace.

  173. And he will,

  174. as we cry out to him.

  175. And that's what David's encouraging us to do.

  176. David cries out to God,

  177. and asks for God's grace,

  178. and asks for God's healing,

  179. in the midst of this sin problem.

  180. So you can also cry out to the Lord,

  181. when you're greatly troubled,

  182. because of sin problems in your life.

  183. When sin overwhelms you.

  184. When sin knocks you down.

  185. When you're weak.

  186. When you're curled up because of your sin.

  187. When you don't know what to do.

  188. Cry out to God.

  189. Cry out to God.

  190. In verse 3,

  191. David kind of finishes that part in verse 3,

  192. and he says,

  193. but you, O Lord,

  194. how long?

  195. How long?

  196. This kind of,

  197. this shows us another level

  198. of this struggling that David's going through.

  199. He's kind of impatient with it.

  200. He's crying out to God,

  201. can you just,

  202. can you just do it now?

  203. Can you just help me now?

  204. And maybe,

  205. maybe you've been through that as well,

  206. in your life.

  207. Maybe you're suffering with a sin problem,

  208. and you just ask God,

  209. help me right now.

  210. I just want to be out of this right now.

  211. Sometimes God doesn't,

  212. doesn't bring us out of it immediately.

  213. Right?

  214. He doesn't bring us out of it immediately.

  215. But notice that David doesn't just stop crying out to God.

  216. He doesn't turn away from God

  217. just because God doesn't answer him immediately.

  218. Right?

  219. David doesn't stop crying out to God

  220. because he knows that without God,

  221. he can't be saved out of this.

  222. Without God's grace,

  223. he can't be helped out of this sin problem.

  224. So David cries out to the Lord

  225. when he's greatly troubled because of his sin.

  226. But David also cries out to the Lord

  227. in the fear of physical death.

  228. He cries out to the Lord in the fear of death.

  229. Look at verses 4 and 5 with me.

  230. Turn, O Lord.

  231. Deliver my life.

  232. Save me for the sake of your steadfast love.

  233. For in death,

  234. there's no remembrance of you.

  235. Ensure who will give you praise.

  236. David is now,

  237. instead of having this sin problem

  238. that he's struggling with,

  239. he's now got this physical fear

  240. that he's kind of struggling with,

  241. this fear of death.

  242. This physical fear of death.

  243. And David pleads to the Lord

  244. to deliver his life,

  245. to save his life,

  246. to help him.

  247. But why?

  248. Why would God,

  249. why would God help him?

  250. Why would David know

  251. even that God's going to help him?

  252. Well, because of the Lord's

  253. covenantal love,

  254. because of his steadfast love.

  255. And that's what David mentions there

  256. in verse 4.

  257. Save me for the sake of your steadfast love.

  258. This is a love,

  259. the steadfast love has been mentioned

  260. all the way throughout the Bible.

  261. This is a covenantal promise

  262. that God has made

  263. with his people

  264. from Abraham

  265. to Moses

  266. to the disciples.

  267. And he also makes it to us.

  268. He also makes it to you,

  269. this promise.

  270. This covenantal promise,

  271. this steadfast love,

  272. a promise of steadfast love,

  273. he's made that promise to you.

  274. And we know that when God

  275. makes his promises,

  276. he doesn't let you down.

  277. He doesn't just give up

  278. on the promises

  279. that he makes to you.

  280. He doesn't just say one thing

  281. but act in the other way.

  282. He's consistent

  283. all throughout history

  284. and to his people

  285. he gives this steadfast

  286. covenantal love.

  287. So you can today

  288. cry out to the Lord

  289. in the midst

  290. of this fear

  291. of physical death

  292. and he has promised

  293. that through Christ,

  294. if you're in Christ,

  295. he promises

  296. his steadfast love

  297. to you.

  298. And this means

  299. in the midst

  300. of your biggest fears,

  301. in the midst

  302. of physical pain,

  303. you can cry out to him.

  304. This is the promise

  305. that David is resting on

  306. throughout this psalm.

  307. He cries out to the Lord

  308. in this fear of death.

  309. Look at verse 5 again

  310. with me as well.

  311. For in death

  312. there is no remembrance

  313. of you.

  314. Ensure who will give you praise.

  315. David is specifically worried

  316. about not being able

  317. to praise God

  318. and remember God

  319. after his death.

  320. That's what this kind of

  321. points to,

  322. that he might not,

  323. he wants to continue

  324. to remember God,

  325. he wants to continue

  326. to praise God

  327. and these are both

  328. really important parts

  329. of David's life

  330. and this should be

  331. really important parts

  332. of our lives

  333. as God's people.

  334. Hebrew belief

  335. in this time

  336. was that there wasn't

  337. like a hope

  338. of heaven.

  339. They didn't really know

  340. where they would go

  341. after death.

  342. They mentioned Sheol here.

  343. Sheol is like this

  344. grey state of death.

  345. Right?

  346. But for us,

  347. we've got the rest

  348. of the Bible.

  349. We know the whole story.

  350. We know more

  351. now than they did then.

  352. We know that Christ came

  353. and that Christ rose again.

  354. But we might still feel

  355. the weight of this

  356. physical death

  357. in our lives.

  358. We might still feel

  359. a fear,

  360. maybe not even just

  361. for your own life

  362. but also for

  363. your family's lives.

  364. And one day,

  365. and it's a fact

  366. that one day

  367. every single one of us

  368. are going to die.

  369. Every single one of us

  370. on this earth.

  371. But I want to encourage you

  372. that when you feel

  373. the weight of this

  374. physical death,

  375. cry out to the Lord.

  376. Cry out to the Lord

  377. and he will help you

  378. because he loves you.

  379. Because he gives

  380. his steadfast love

  381. to you,

  382. his people.

  383. And if you don't know

  384. him today,

  385. he welcomes you

  386. with open arms

  387. to come and cry out to him.

  388. He welcomes you

  389. in the midst of your

  390. physical suffering,

  391. in the midst of your

  392. suffering with sin.

  393. he welcomes you.

  394. Remember Jesus

  395. who knew

  396. the pain

  397. of physical death.

  398. He knew

  399. what it was like

  400. to suffer.

  401. He knew

  402. what it was like

  403. to be mocked,

  404. to be beaten

  405. and then he went

  406. and hung on a cross.

  407. He took

  408. the weight

  409. of God's wrath

  410. on his shoulders

  411. and he did that

  412. as a substitute

  413. for us.

  414. He stood there

  415. in our place

  416. so that if we

  417. repent

  418. and believe

  419. in the Lord,

  420. if we turn away

  421. from our sins

  422. and believe in God

  423. and cry out to the Lord,

  424. he promises

  425. to save us.

  426. Remember that

  427. we know more

  428. of the story,

  429. of the full story

  430. of the Bible

  431. than the Hebrews

  432. did at this time

  433. when David was writing.

  434. We know more

  435. of the story now

  436. and we know

  437. that Jesus

  438. not only died

  439. but he also

  440. rose again.

  441. And now he sat

  442. at the right hand

  443. of the Father.

  444. And in this truth,

  445. in this truth

  446. that Jesus died

  447. and he rose again

  448. and you can come

  449. to know him

  450. and believe in him,

  451. we also don't need

  452. to be worried

  453. about

  454. not giving God

  455. praise after death

  456. and not remembering

  457. God after death.

  458. We don't have to be

  459. worried about that

  460. anymore

  461. because

  462. we will stand

  463. with God in heaven

  464. for all of eternity.

  465. we will be with God

  466. in heaven

  467. for all of eternity.

  468. Remember what John

  469. said in Revelation 7

    Revelation 7:9

  470. verses 9 and 10.

  471. He said,

  472. after this

  473. I looked

  474. and behold

  475. a great number

  476. that no one

  477. could number

  478. from every nation

  479. all tribes

  480. peoples

  481. and languages

  482. standing before

  483. the Lamb

  484. clothed in white robes

  485. with palm branches

  486. in their hands

  487. crying out

  488. with a loud voice

  489. salvation

  490. belongs to our God

  491. who sits on the throne.

  492. And one day

  493. every one of us

  494. who is in Christ

  495. every one of us

  496. who believes

  497. in the Lord

  498. will stand

  499. before him

  500. praising

  501. and worshipping him

  502. for all of eternity.

  503. Through God's

  504. steadfast love

  505. we will be saved.

  506. We will stand

  507. in heaven.

  508. So cry out

  509. to the Lord

  510. today

  511. when you feel

  512. the weight

  513. of physical death.

  514. You feel the fear

  515. of physical death.

  516. In the fear

  517. of physical death

  518. in the fear

  519. or in your sin problems

  520. when you're greatly troubled

  521. you can cry out

  522. to the Lord

  523. but you can also

  524. cry out to the Lord

  525. as David did

  526. in your weeping.

  527. Cry out to the Lord

  528. in your weeping.

  529. Look at verse 6 and 7

  530. with me.

  531. David says

  532. I am weary

  533. with my mooning.

  534. Every night

  535. I flood my bed

  536. with tears

  537. I drench my couch

  538. with weeping.

  539. My eye

  540. wastes away

  541. because of grief

  542. it grows weak

  543. because of all

  544. my foes.

  545. David is in great sorrow.

  546. He is greatly troubled.

  547. He is in great pain.

  548. And to us

  549. it might seem

  550. that David uses

  551. quite a lot of exaggeration

  552. throughout this psalm

  553. when he says

  554. my eye

  555. wastes away

  556. because of my grief

  557. I flood my bed

  558. with tears

  559. I drench my couch

  560. with weeping.

  561. It might feel

  562. quite over the top

  563. for us

  564. but to David

  565. that doesn't feel

  566. over the top at all.

  567. That's a reality

  568. for him

  569. right now.

  570. This is the reality

  571. in David's life

  572. right now.

  573. In verse 7

  574. we see for the first time

  575. that David's actually

  576. facing against

  577. some human foes

  578. and human enemies.

  579. David had a struggle

  580. throughout his life

  581. with some human enemies

  582. and this is the first time

  583. in this psalm

  584. that we see

  585. these enemies

  586. introduced

  587. which caused

  588. David massive distress.

  589. David's not

  590. in an easy life situation

  591. so what he says

  592. what he's saying

  593. isn't over the top

  594. at all

  595. they actually feel

  596. really

  597. quite real

  598. for David

  599. to say

  600. that my eye

  601. wastes away

  602. with grief

  603. and maybe for you

  604. today

  605. these words

  606. they don't feel

  607. over the top.

  608. if you've had

  609. a serious moment

  610. of suffering

  611. in your life

  612. maybe you've

  613. worn the loss

  614. of a loved one

  615. or experienced

  616. deep physical pain

  617. these words

  618. probably feel

  619. very real

  620. for you

  621. today.

  622. You may have felt

  623. like your eyes

  624. are wasting away

  625. because of all the crying.

  626. you may feel

  627. like there's no tears

  628. left

  629. you may feel

  630. like the pillow

  631. that you're crying

  632. into is soaked

  633. with your tears

  634. that it's drenched

  635. with tears

  636. this is what

  637. David's feeling

  638. and you can understand

  639. that today as well

  640. I think we can understand

  641. that today as well

  642. this suffering

  643. that David's facing

  644. isn't just a temporary

  645. one time suffering

  646. it's consistent

  647. it's constant

  648. it's

  649. at night

  650. right

  651. it says

  652. it says

  653. every night

  654. I flood my bed

  655. with tears

  656. and I drench my couch

  657. with weeping

  658. so it's not just that

  659. Mike but it's also

  660. on his couch

  661. during the day

  662. this is somewhere

  663. that David sits

  664. similar to a sofa

  665. for us

  666. he sits on his couch

  667. and he cries

  668. and he weeps

  669. it's not just a

  670. one time struggle

  671. this is a daily

  672. struggle for David

  673. he's devastated

  674. devastated

  675. with all that

  676. is surrounding him

  677. and he feels weak

  678. he's suffering

  679. he's helpless

  680. feels alone

  681. maybe

  682. but what does he

  683. choose to do

  684. in this suffering

  685. in this weeping

  686. well he cries out

  687. to God

  688. cries out

  689. to the Lord

  690. one of my biggest

  691. fears in life

  692. is receiving

  693. that phone call

  694. from a family member

  695. or a friend

  696. telling me

  697. that something

  698. serious has happened

  699. you pick up

  700. the phone

  701. you hear that

  702. distressed voice

  703. something serious

  704. has happened

  705. you have to get

  706. to the hospital

  707. immediately

  708. this is possibly

  709. one of the hardest

  710. situations that I

  711. could imagine us

  712. going through

  713. as a family member

  714. or a friend

  715. a loved one

  716. is going through

  717. serious illness

  718. there's nothing

  719. that we can do

  720. to help in those

  721. situations

  722. all we can do

  723. is we sit

  724. and we can weep

  725. and we can cry

  726. out to the Lord

  727. it can be one

  728. of the most

  729. loneliest places

  730. one of the loneliest

  731. feelings

  732. for us to be

  733. weeping

  734. in those situations

  735. by someone

  736. maybe in a hospital

  737. bed

  738. and maybe you felt

  739. like that in your

  740. life

  741. maybe at some

  742. point in your

  743. life

  744. or maybe you even

  745. feel like that

  746. right now

  747. something's happened

  748. and sorrow's all

  749. around you

  750. there's nowhere to

  751. go and you might

  752. feel trapped

  753. but there is one

  754. place that you

  755. can turn

  756. one person that

  757. you can turn to

  758. and he does hear

  759. us

  760. and he does love

  761. us

  762. through his

  763. covenantal

  764. his steadfast

  765. love

  766. we can turn

  767. and we can cry

  768. out to the Lord

  769. just as David

  770. did

  771. you can cry

  772. out to the Lord

  773. in your weeping

  774. cry out to the

  775. Lord

  776. and he will give

  777. you comfort

  778. and he will give

  779. you peace

  780. in these most

  781. difficult times

  782. of your life

  783. so as I've

  784. encouraged you

  785. today

  786. cry out to the

  787. Lord

  788. in your weeping

  789. cry out to the

  790. Lord

  791. when you're

  792. greatly troubled

  793. when you're

  794. in the fear

  795. of physical

  796. death

  797. cry out to

  798. the Lord

  799. but when we

  800. cry out

  801. we don't cry

  802. out to one

  803. who doesn't

  804. hear us

  805. we don't cry

  806. out to just

  807. no one

  808. we don't cry

  809. out without

  810. hope

  811. but instead

  812. as David

  813. does

  814. we cry out

  815. to the Lord

  816. in confidence

  817. as the Lord

  818. who hears us

  819. we cry out

  820. to the Lord

  821. in confidence

  822. look at verses

  823. 8 to 10

  824. with me

  825. David says

  826. depart from me

  827. all you workers

  828. of evil

  829. for the Lord

  830. has heard

  831. the sound

  832. of my weeping

  833. the Lord

  834. has heard

  835. my plea

  836. and the Lord

  837. accepts my

  838. prayer

  839. all my enemies

  840. shall be ashamed

  841. and greatly troubled

  842. they shall turn

  843. back and be put

  844. to shame

  845. in a moment

  846. the entire tone

  847. of the psalm

  848. completely changes

  849. at this moment

  850. the entire tone

  851. David isn't just

  852. weak

  853. he isn't just

  854. moaning

  855. he isn't just

  856. languishing

  857. he isn't just

  858. weeping

  859. now he stands

  860. in confidence

  861. why does he stand

  862. in confidence

  863. how can he stand

  864. in confidence

  865. confidence

  866. because of the

  867. Lord

  868. because of who

  869. the Lord is

  870. look at verse

  871. 8 to 9 again

  872. the Lord

  873. has heard

  874. the sound

  875. of my weeping

  876. the Lord

  877. has heard

  878. my plea

  879. the Lord

  880. accepts my

  881. prayer

  882. David has

  883. confidence

  884. in the

  885. Lord

  886. in the

  887. Lord

  888. so when we

  889. cry out

  890. to the Lord

  891. today

  892. we cry out

  893. in confidence

  894. I wasn't a

  895. very confident

  896. child

  897. and I

  898. hated it

  899. in school

  900. when I had

  901. to present

  902. in front of

  903. the class

  904. bring a

  905. presentation

  906. in front of

  907. the class

  908. I hated the

  909. idea of

  910. having to

  911. make up a

  912. full presentation

  913. and stand in

  914. front of the

  915. class

  916. all eyes on

  917. me

  918. I hated

  919. the idea

  920. it was one

  921. of my biggest

  922. fears as a

  923. kid

  924. the week

  925. leading up

  926. to it

  927. was awful

  928. nights

  929. of preparation

  930. of anxiety

  931. of your heart

  932. racing

  933. you don't

  934. think you

  935. can do it

  936. and then

  937. that day

  938. comes

  939. that day

  940. comes

  941. and you're

  942. about to

  943. get up

  944. in front

  945. of the

  946. whole class

  947. and panic

  948. setting in

  949. you feel

  950. your palms

  951. sweating

  952. you have

  953. no confidence

  954. in yourself

  955. you don't

  956. think you

  957. can get

  958. up

  959. but then

  960. what if

  961. somebody

  962. walked

  963. through

  964. the

  965. door

  966. what if

  967. your parent

  968. walked

  969. through

  970. the

  971. door

  972. your parent

  973. the one

  974. who's

  975. helped

  976. you

  977. through

  978. all of

  979. this

  980. week's

  981. preparation

  982. leading up

  983. to it

  984. the one

  985. who has

  986. calmed you

  987. throughout

  988. your life

  989. who knows

  990. exactly

  991. who you

  992. are

  993. and knows

  994. exactly

  995. how to

  996. calm you

  997. down

  998. knows

  999. exactly

  1000. what

  1001. you want

  1002. to hear

  1003. and what

  1004. you need

  1005. to hear

  1006. what if

  1007. your parent

  1008. walked

  1009. up to

  1010. you

  1011. just

  1012. before

  1013. you

  1014. got

  1015. to

  1016. that

  1017. presentation

  1018. sat

  1019. down

  1020. with

  1021. you

  1022. and

  1023. chatted

  1024. you

  1025. through

  1026. it

  1027. calms

  1028. you

  1029. down

  1030. your

  1031. entire

  1032. mood

  1033. would

  1034. change

  1035. wouldn't

  1036. it

  1037. your

  1038. entire

  1039. mood

  1040. would

  1041. change

  1042. you

  1043. aren't

  1044. scared

  1045. your

  1046. palms

  1047. aren't

  1048. sweating

  1049. anymore

  1050. your

  1051. heart

  1052. stops

  1053. racing

  1054. because

  1055. you

  1056. have

  1057. confidence

  1058. because

  1059. your

  1060. parent

  1061. stands

  1062. there

  1063. with

  1064. you

  1065. and

  1066. helps

  1067. to

  1068. give

  1069. you

  1070. that

  1071. confidence

  1072. and

  1073. in a

  1074. similar

  1075. way

  1076. we

  1077. can

  1078. have

  1079. confidence

  1080. when

  1081. we

  1082. are

  1083. distressed

  1084. because

  1085. the

  1086. Lord

  1087. is

  1088. with

  1089. us

  1090. the

  1091. Lord

  1092. helps

  1093. us

  1094. the

  1095. Lord

  1096. confidence

  1097. David

  1098. opened in

  1099. verse 8

  1100. with a

  1101. line of

  1102. confidence

  1103. he says

  1104. depart

  1105. from me

  1106. all you

  1107. workers

  1108. of evil

  1109. depart

  1110. from me

  1111. this line

  1112. of confidence

  1113. he has

  1114. authority

  1115. he's now

  1116. speaking as

  1117. one with

  1118. authority

  1119. in the

  1120. same way

  1121. in verse 10

  1122. he says

  1123. all my

  1124. enemies

  1125. shall be

  1126. ashamed

  1127. and greatly

  1128. troubled

  1129. David's

  1130. not the

  1131. one that's

  1132. greatly

  1133. troubled

  1134. anymore

  1135. but his

  1136. enemies

  1137. are

  1138. he stands

  1139. with

  1140. confidence

  1141. and

  1142. authority

  1143. now

  1144. David's

  1145. speaking

  1146. of human

  1147. enemies

  1148. specifically

  1149. that are

  1150. probably

  1151. seeking to

  1152. kill him

  1153. we know

  1154. this in

  1155. David's

  1156. life

  1157. we don't

  1158. know

  1159. exactly

  1160. when the

  1161. psalm is

  1162. in David's

  1163. life

  1164. but we

  1165. know

  1166. that in

  1167. David's

  1168. life he

  1169. was chased

  1170. by human

  1171. enemies

  1172. one of

  1173. those human

  1174. enemies

  1175. being Saul

  1176. and his

  1177. armies

  1178. who chased

  1179. David

  1180. but we

  1181. do know

  1182. that David

  1183. was saved

  1184. out of this

  1185. and God

  1186. delivered him

  1187. and David

  1188. cried out to

  1189. the Lord

  1190. in the midst

  1191. of his

  1192. human enemies

  1193. and now he

  1194. speaks as

  1195. one with

  1196. confidence

  1197. in the midst

  1198. of his

  1199. human enemies

  1200. and I'd

  1201. imagine

  1202. for us

  1203. today

  1204. hopefully

  1205. there's no

  1206. one in

  1207. here that

  1208. has a

  1209. human

  1210. enemy

  1211. seeking to

  1212. kill them

  1213. at least

  1214. I hope

  1215. not

  1216. but we

  1217. do all

  1218. have a

  1219. common

  1220. enemy

  1221. we do

  1222. have a

  1223. common

  1224. enemy

  1225. and that

  1226. enemy is

  1227. the devil

  1228. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  1229. chapter 5

  1230. Peter writes

  1231. your adversary

  1232. the devil

  1233. prowls around

  1234. like a roaring

  1235. lion

  1236. seeking someone

  1237. to devour

  1238. the devil

  1239. prowls around

  1240. seeking someone

  1241. to devour

  1242. the devil's

  1243. our enemy

  1244. and he

  1245. seeks to

  1246. devour

  1247. us

  1248. and this

  1249. reality

  1250. can give us

  1251. great distress

  1252. this can be

  1253. really worrying

  1254. for us

  1255. this can cause

  1256. us to weep

  1257. this can cause

  1258. us to be

  1259. greatly troubled

  1260. this can cause

  1261. us to be

  1262. scared

  1263. but this

  1264. psalm

  1265. gives us

  1266. confidence

  1267. that as we

  1268. crawl out to

  1269. the Lord

  1270. as we cry

  1271. out to the

  1272. Lord in

  1273. this

  1274. in the midst

  1275. of the devil

  1276. he will hear

  1277. us

  1278. when the

  1279. devil prowls

  1280. around

  1281. tries to

  1282. devour

  1283. us

  1284. tries to

  1285. pull us

  1286. away

  1287. from God

  1288. tries to

  1289. tempt us

  1290. and pull

  1291. us into

  1292. that sin

  1293. that we've

  1294. been struggling

  1295. with

  1296. we can cry

  1297. out to the

  1298. Lord who's

  1299. more powerful

  1300. than this

  1301. enemy the

  1302. devil

  1303. and he

  1304. the Lord

  1305. will hear

  1306. your cry

  1307. for help

  1308. David now

  1309. stands as

  1310. one with

  1311. confidence

  1312. he's no

  1313. longer curled

  1314. up he's no

  1315. longer languishing

  1316. as I said

  1317. he's not

  1318. greatly troubled

  1319. he's not in

  1320. fear of death

  1321. he's not

  1322. weeping

  1323. but he is

  1324. standing as

  1325. one whom

  1326. the Lord

  1327. has heard

  1328. we saw

  1329. little glimpses

  1330. of David's

  1331. confidence

  1332. throughout the

  1333. sand

  1334. didn't we

  1335. in verse

  1336. 2

  1337. David said

  1338. David understood

  1339. that God

  1340. would give him

  1341. grace

  1342. he said be

  1343. gracious to

  1344. me

  1345. so he had

  1346. some sort

  1347. of understanding

  1348. of God's

  1349. grace

  1350. later on in

  1351. verse 4

  1352. he remembers

  1353. God's steadfast

  1354. love as well

  1355. that covenantal

  1356. love that God

  1357. has promised

  1358. throughout all

  1359. of time

  1360. so David

  1361. did have

  1362. confidence in

  1363. the Lord

  1364. as he was

  1365. crying out

  1366. to the Lord

  1367. even in

  1368. the midst

  1369. of his

  1370. when he was

  1371. greatly troubled

  1372. in the fear

  1373. of physical

  1374. pain

  1375. and when he

  1376. was weeping

  1377. he had

  1378. confidence

  1379. so when you

  1380. cry out to

  1381. the Lord

  1382. today

  1383. when you're

  1384. greatly troubled

  1385. because of sin

  1386. and the fear

  1387. of death

  1388. when you're

  1389. weeping

  1390. in any

  1391. circumstance

  1392. in your life

  1393. whatever you're

  1394. going through

  1395. you can cry

  1396. out to the

  1397. Lord

  1398. with confidence

  1399. that he's

  1400. heard you

  1401. that he'll

  1402. respond to

  1403. you

  1404. so cry

  1405. out to the

  1406. Lord today

  1407. in whatever

  1408. situation

  1409. you're facing

  1410. do you know

  1411. him personally

  1412. do you know

  1413. the Lord

  1414. personally

  1415. do you know

  1416. him as your

  1417. saviour

  1418. God welcomes

  1419. you with open

  1420. arms today

  1421. to cry out

  1422. to him

  1423. cry out to

  1424. him

  1425. trust in him

  1426. believe in him

  1427. and he will

  1428. save you

  1429. and if you're

  1430. one of God's

  1431. people this

  1432. morning

  1433. all of us

  1434. face trials

  1435. every one of

  1436. us will go

  1437. through hardships

  1438. in our lives

  1439. but in the midst

  1440. of all of these

  1441. hardships

  1442. cry out to

  1443. the Lord

  1444. cry out to

  1445. God

  1446. in your

  1447. distress

  1448. and he

  1449. will hear

  1450. you

  1451. let's pray

  1452. Father God

  1453. we thank you

  1454. for your word

  1455. this morning

  1456. thank you

  1457. that this

  1458. psalm

  1459. of lament

  1460. is

  1461. maybe so

  1462. real

  1463. for some

  1464. of us

  1465. this morning

  1466. Father

  1467. thank you

  1468. that you

  1469. provide this

  1470. psalm for

  1471. us

  1472. even in

  1473. the midst

  1474. of our

  1475. distress

  1476. Lord

  1477. thank you

  1478. that you

  1479. hear us

  1480. thank you

  1481. for your

  1482. steadfast

  1483. love

  1484. thank you

  1485. for your

  1486. covenantal

  1487. love

  1488. all throughout

  1489. history

  1490. until now

  1491. thank you

  1492. for sending

  1493. your son

  1494. to die

  1495. for us

  1496. on the

  1497. cross

  1498. thank you

  1499. that now

  1500. we can

  1501. stand

  1502. and cry

  1503. out to

  1504. you

  1505. in confidence

  1506. so Lord

  1507. help us

  1508. today

  1509. help us

  1510. through our

  1511. lives

  1512. to cry

  1513. out to

  1514. you

  1515. in tragedy

  1516. in hardships

  1517. in our sins

  1518. in our

  1519. physical pain

  1520. help us

  1521. to cry

  1522. out to

  1523. you

  1524. and we

  1525. know

  1526. that you

  1527. will hear

  1528. us

  1529. Lord

  1530. be with

  1531. us

  1532. today

  1533. we

  1534. do

  1535. love

  1536. you

  1537. Lord

  1538. and it

  1539. in

  1540. Jesus

  1541. name

  1542. we

  1543. pray

  1544. amen

  1545. amen
