  1. Well, good morning everyone, nice to see you.

  2. And as always, look forward to chatting with you over tea and coffee.

  3. Please don't rush away.

  4. It's good to chat if you're able to stay.

  5. Turn in your Bibles please to Colossians.

  6. This is the letter we're looking at together this term.

  7. Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  8. Last week we looked at chapter 1 verses 1 to 8 as we saw the beginning of this church

  9. and how he was thanking God for their faith in Christ Jesus and the love that they had

  10. for each other and the hope of heaven to come, this new community of believers.

  11. And then this morning we're going to be looking at verses 9 to 14 which is a prayer, a prayer for the church.

  12. And as we go through this morning, at different points I'm going to turn what we've looked at a section at a time into a prayer.

  13. And the prayer will be on the screen.

  14. You can verbally pray it out along with me if you want to or you can just pray quietly to the Lord.

  15. But we're going to try and turn what we look at at different stages into prayer to make it practical and helpful.

  16. So let's keep our Bibles open at Colossians 1 verses 9 to 14.

    Colossians 1:9–14

  17. I'm going to pray and then we'll look at his words together.

  18. Father, you have given to us all that we have.

  19. There is nothing that we hold dear that is not a gift from you.

  20. Thank you for all that you have blessed us with.

  21. And we thank you that it is your desire to continue to give to your people and to your church

  22. all that we need as we walk the Christian life.

  23. So Father, we come in our weakness, our helplessness.

  24. We come humbly before our great King and ask, give to us, your servants, what we need today.

  25. Help us, we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  26. Well, if you could ask God for one thing and you knew you would receive it, what would you ask for?

  27. If you could ask for one thing and you knew you would receive it, what would you ask for?

  28. Or suppose somebody comes up to you over tea and coffee and they say to you,

  29. Will you pray for me?

  30. Pray for me this week.

  31. What would you ask that person to pray for you?

  32. Those are good questions to ask because the answer to those questions reveal

  33. what is most valuable to us and what is most important to us.

  34. How we answer those questions reveal what's most important to us.

  35. So what would you ask God for?

  36. Would it be for an increase in your salary at work?

  37. Would it be for better health?

  38. Would it be for a husband or a wife?

  39. Maybe to pass your exams or win your match?

  40. Or what would you pray for?

  41. Well, in our text this morning, verses 9 to 14, the Apostle Paul writes what he is praying for these people.

  42. Verse 9.

  43. For this reason.

  44. So he has been giving thanks for their salvation in Christ, their new beginning.

  45. So for this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you.

  46. Well, we know he prays.

  47. He does so in his other letters.

  48. But what does he pray for?

  49. Well, surprisingly, he doesn't pray and ask,

  50. Lord, make it less stressful for these people.

  51. Or, Lord, give them an easier life so that they're not tired anymore.

  52. He doesn't even ask for better health or greater prosperity.

  53. Paul prays not what we want, but what we most need.

  54. What we most need.

  55. His prayer shapes how we as a church family can pray for one another.

  56. The things that we most need.

  57. There's three things that form our prayer for one another and for the church.

  58. We pray that we would be filled by God,

  59. strengthened with power,

  60. and it to be received in thanks.

  61. So something to be filled by,

  62. something to be strengthened with,

  63. and something to be received.

  64. So let's look at each of these in turn.

  65. First is a prayer to be filled by God.

  66. Look at the rest of verse 9.

  67. We continually ask God to fill you,

  68. fill you with what?

  69. With the knowledge of his will.

  70. That's the prayer.

  71. Lord, fill me with the knowledge of your will.

  72. Now, knowing God's will is important to us.

  73. In fact, it's something that kind of strikes a chord with us,

  74. because we think of God's will in terms of our future, don't we?

  75. We say things like,

  76. it's God's will for me to move to Paris.

  77. It's God's will that I should marry you.

  78. It's God's will that I should work here.

  79. It sounds very spiritual, doesn't it,

  80. when we attach things that we desire with God's will.

  81. But I think what we're really expressing is our own personal choices.

  82. You see, God's will is not complex.

  83. It's not something hidden that we have to discover.

  84. It's not some kind of packaged personal plan that God has,

  85. that we somehow have to prise open his hands

  86. to get what God's will is for my life.

  87. No, God's will has actually been revealed to us all.

  88. God's will is what God wants and what God desires.

  89. God's will is God's priority for our lives and for this world.

  90. So you're asking the question,

  91. as am I, well, how do we know what that will is?

  92. What is it that God wants and God's desire?

  93. Well, the primary way of knowing what God's will is,

  94. is by the Spirit through Scripture.

  95. By the Spirit through Scripture.

  96. You see, God's will is revealed to us in the pages of Scripture.

  97. The book that you have open in your hands there now

  98. is the primary and fundamental things

  99. that we need to know for our life and for this world.

  100. That's how God communicates.

  101. It's how God speaks to us.

  102. It's how we hear God's voice.

  103. If you want to be filled with God's desire and God's priorities,

  104. if you want a knowledge of his will,

  105. well, see this book, open it up and read it.

  106. Let me show you God's revealed will for your life.

  107. Have a look at chapter 1, verse 28.

  108. This is God's will.

  109. We're reading Scripture, God's word.

  110. This is what it says, chapter 1, verse 28.

  111. He, that is Christ, is the one we proclaim,

  112. admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom,

  113. so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.

  114. That's God's will for your life,

  115. that you would become mature in Christ,

  116. that you would grow in Christ-likeness.

  117. Let me show you another one.

  118. Chapter 2, verse 2.

  119. Again, he's speaking of the church.

  120. You see, that's God's will for us,

  121. that together as a church we would be united together

  122. in love for Jesus and love for one another.

  123. You see, God's will isn't very complex, is it?

  124. It's really quite simple.

  125. We just open up the Bible and read.

  126. That's God's will for your life.

  127. But, to see that will applied to our lives,

  128. and to see our priorities change,

  129. and our desires to match up with God's desires,

  130. we need the help of the Spirit.

  131. Look at the rest of verse 9.

  132. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will

  133. through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.

  134. You see, the Spirit gives us wisdom and understanding

  135. to apply God's revealed will to our lives.

  136. As we read the Bible, we're learning what God's will is,

  137. we're being filled with his knowledge,

  138. and the Spirit is at work within us,

  139. giving us wisdom and understanding

  140. to apply all of that word

  141. to our lives and to our day-to-day situations.

  142. And so,

  143. our first prayer,

  144. you can follow on the screen.

  145. Father God,

  146. as we read your word,

  147. fill us with a knowledge of what you want

  148. and you desire,

  149. and by your Spirit,

  150. give us wisdom and understanding

  151. to apply your truth

  152. to our lives.

  153. Amen.

  154. So, we ask God to fill us,

  155. and there's a reason,

  156. there's a big reason

  157. why we need to be filled with God's knowledge

  158. and for the Spirit to be at work in us,

  159. so that

  160. we might please God.

  161. Let's look at the end of verse 9.

  162. We'll read that into verse 10.

  163. We continually ask God

  164. to fill you with the knowledge of his will

  165. through all the wisdom and understanding

  166. that the Spirit gives,

  167. so that

  168. you may live a life worthy of the Lord

  169. and please him in every way.

  170. So, you see that little phrase,

  171. to live a life worthy of God?

  172. Well, that's to live a life that pleases God.

  173. If you want to live a life that's worthy to God,

  174. it means to live a life that pleases God.

  175. And how we please him

  176. is further explained in verse 10.

  177. Bearing fruit in every good work

  178. and growing in the knowledge of God.

  179. Bearing fruit

  180. and growing.

  181. That's what it is to please God.

  182. In fact, as we read through Colossians,

  183. we're shown what some of this fruit looks like.

  184. The kind of things that we should be doing

  185. if we're to please God.

  186. So, just for example,

  187. have a look at chapter 3, verse 5.

  188. I wonder what you have in your mind

  189. when you think of bearing fruit in every good work.

  190. Something to please God.

  191. Well, here it is.

  192. Some examples.

  193. Chapter 3, verse 5.

  194. Here's a good fruit.

  195. Put to death, therefore,

  196. whatever belongs to your earthly nature.

  197. Sexual immorality,

  198. impurity,

  199. lust,

  200. evil desires,

  201. and greed,

  202. which is idolatry.

  203. That's a lovely fruit, isn't it?

  204. Fight sin.

  205. Put it to death.

  206. Or another one,

  207. verse 13.

  208. Bear with each other

  209. and forgive one another

  210. if any of you has a grievance

  211. against someone.

  212. You've got a grievance

  213. against someone here today?

  214. Maybe your spouse,

  215. maybe your children,

  216. maybe a neighbour.

  217. I don't know.

  218. Do we forgive them?

  219. It's a beautiful fruit.

  220. Or verse 16.

  221. Let the message,

  222. or the word of God,

  223. the message of Christ,

  224. dwell among you richly

  225. as you teach

  226. and admonish one another

  227. with all wisdom

  228. through psalms,

  229. hymns,

  230. and songs from the Spirit,

  231. singing to God

  232. with gratitude in your hearts.

  233. That's another lovely fruit.

  234. That's what we were practising.

  235. That was some of the good work

  236. we were doing

  237. as we gathered this morning.

  238. We were singing songs.

  239. Why?

  240. Because as we sing,

  241. we're not singing just to God.

  242. We're singing to each other

  243. and we're teaching

  244. and we're admonishing

  245. and reminding each other

  246. of who God is,

  247. that he is good,

  248. that he's paid it all,

  249. and that we have access to

  250. a God in heaven.

  251. These are the kinds of fruits

  252. that are to be in display

  253. in our lives.

  254. They're attractive and beautiful.

  255. It is pleasing to God.

  256. But we're not just to bear fruit.

  257. We're also, verse 10,

  258. to grow in knowledge.

  259. And this growing in knowledge

  260. is not just to kind of puff our heads up

  261. and fill as much theology

  262. as we possibly can

  263. and just cram it in

  264. so we've got this big theological head

  265. that's so big

  266. and so deep.

  267. That's good.

  268. But it's really about

  269. putting it into practice.

  270. Growing in knowledge

  271. is obeying God's will

  272. for my life.

  273. You see,

  274. that's the way we please God,

  275. is hearing his word

  276. and doing it.

  277. And so,

  278. to our second prayer,

  279. we pray,

  280. Father,

  281. fill us with a knowledge

  282. of your will

  283. so that we might live

  284. a fruitful life,

  285. putting sin to death,

  286. loving each other,

  287. and encouraging one another

  288. with the word of Christ

  289. so that we please you.

  290. Amen.

  291. Now that's a great prayer,

  292. isn't it?

  293. To be filled by God

  294. and given his spirit

  295. so that we can please him

  296. in our life.

  297. But how are we going to do it?

  298. Because all of that fruit

  299. and all of that knowledge

  300. is difficult.

  301. So here's the second part

  302. of the prayer.

  303. A prayer to be strengthened

  304. with power.

  305. You see,

  306. without God,

  307. there can be no spiritual fruit.

  308. There can be no growing.

  309. There can be no obedience.

  310. There can be no pleasing God.

  311. So we come to God

  312. humbly,

  313. admitting our weakness

  314. and helplessness,

  315. and ask him

  316. that he would strengthen us

  317. by his power.

  318. So look at verse 11.

  319. being strengthened with all power

  320. according to his glorious might.

  321. What a great prayer.

  322. To be strengthened

  323. with all power

  324. according to his glorious might.

  325. Now that power,

  326. the power we're talking about here,

  327. is nothing less

  328. than God's creation

  329. resurrection power.

  330. Let's look at what scripture says.

  331. I've got these verses

  332. on the screen.

  333. Here's the first one,

  334. which talks about

  335. God's creation power.

  336. Sovereign Lord,

  337. you have made the heavens

  338. and the earth

  339. by your great power

  340. and outstretched arm.

  341. Immense power, isn't it?

  342. To bring the universe

  343. into existence

  344. and to hold it all together.

  345. God's power,

  346. God's power,

  347. God's power,

  348. God's power,

  349. God's power,

  350. God's power,

  351. God's power,

  352. is the same as the mighty strength

  353. he exerted

  354. when he raised Christ from the dead

  355. and seated him in the heavenly realms.

  356. Isn't that an extraordinary power?

  357. The power that raised Jesus from the dead

  358. and put him into the heavenly realms,

  359. ruling over all people

  360. and all things.

  361. That power

  362. is available

  363. for you and for me.

  364. The power that brought

  365. the universe into existence,

  366. the power that raised Christ,

  367. his glorious might

  368. is at work within us.

  369. Verse 11,

  370. being strengthened with

  371. how much power?

  372. All power.

  373. This is God's full

  374. and complete,

  375. unlimited

  376. and eternal power.

  377. You see,

  378. what God asks of us

  379. to please him in every way,

  380. oh, it's so difficult,

  381. isn't it?

  382. But he makes it all possible

  383. by giving to us

  384. his glorious might.

  385. One writer put it like this,

  386. we are strengthened by God

  387. with the greatest strength imaginable.

  388. And so we pray again,

  389. Father God,

  390. help us to see our weakness

  391. and our helplessness.

  392. We come to you asking

  393. that you will strengthen us

  394. with your power

  395. so that we might obey

  396. your will.

  397. Now this being strengthened

  398. with power

  399. is filled out

  400. in a purpose

  401. and a reason

  402. why we need this power.

  403. And here it is,

  404. so that

  405. you and I

  406. can keep on going.

  407. That we'll keep on

  408. persevering

  409. in the Christian life.

  410. Verse 11,

  411. being strengthened

  412. with all power

  413. according to his

  414. glorious might

  415. so that

  416. you might have

  417. great endurance

  418. and patience.

  419. The Christian life,

  420. it's difficult,

  421. isn't it?

  422. It's tough.

  423. And to enable us

  424. to keep going,

  425. to keep walking

  426. and following Jesus,

  427. we're given his power.

  428. And this is seen

  429. in two ways.

  430. When we receive his power,

  431. look at verse 11,

  432. the end of verse 11,

  433. we have great endurance

  434. and patience.

  435. Because that's what

  436. the Christian life requires,

  437. endurance.

  438. It's not a sprint.

  439. It's a marathon.

  440. We don't just receive

  441. Christ,

  442. we continue

  443. with Christ.

  444. And that's hard

  445. for us

  446. as we go to work

  447. or as we go to our school,

  448. as we live our life out.

  449. There are all kinds

  450. of pressures

  451. which are pushing

  452. in upon us

  453. to conform

  454. not to God's will

  455. but to the world's will.

  456. That I would seek

  457. my will

  458. rather than God's will.

  459. That I would follow

  460. my desires

  461. rather than submit

  462. to God's desires.

  463. That's always

  464. crushing in on us.

  465. And so we ask

  466. to be strengthened

  467. with his power

  468. so that we will endure.

  469. And the Christian life

  470. also requires patience.

  471. We want everything now.

  472. We're an instantaneous culture.

  473. We want our struggles

  474. to end now.

  475. Trials to be over now.

  476. We want all of heaven

  477. and the joy of heaven

  478. now.

  479. Well, longing for heaven

  480. is good.

  481. I hope you are longing

  482. for it.

  483. But we've got to learn

  484. patience.

  485. It's coming.

  486. Verse 5 tells us that.

  487. Doesn't it?

  488. Have a look back up

  489. at verse 5.

  490. He's been talking

  491. about their faith

  492. and love

  493. that spring from

  494. the hope

  495. stored up for you

  496. in heaven

  497. about which you've

  498. already heard

  499. in the true message

  500. of the gospel.

  501. For God's children

  502. we're looking forward

  503. where there will be

  504. no struggles

  505. and there will be

  506. no trials.

  507. But we've got to learn

  508. patience.

  509. It is coming.

  510. And so we pray

  511. for power

  512. and strength

  513. to be faithfully

  514. following

  515. and to do that

  516. patiently.

  517. And so we pray

  518. again

  519. how good it is

  520. to pray

  521. because as we pray

  522. God gives.

  523. Here's the prayer.

  524. Father God

  525. strengthen us

  526. with your glorious

  527. might

  528. the power

  529. that brought

  530. the universe

  531. into existence

  532. and the power

  533. that raised

  534. Christ from the dead

  535. so that we will

  536. endure

  537. in the face

  538. of trials

  539. and have patience

  540. while we wait

  541. for heaven.

  542. Amen.

  543. What a great prayer.

  544. So we ask God

  545. to fill us.

  546. We ask to be

  547. strengthened with power.

  548. But are you sure

  549. God is going to

  550. give you what you

  551. need?

  552. Are you sure

  553. that God our

  554. Father will give you

  555. all that we've been

  556. praying for this

  557. morning?

  558. Well,

  559. I think we can be.

  560. A prayer

  561. to be received

  562. in thanks.

  563. Look at verse 12.

  564. He's been praying

  565. for different things

  566. and then he kind of

  567. changes tack

  568. and he bursts

  569. into a prayer

  570. of thanksgiving.

  571. Verse 12.

  572. And giving

  573. joyful thanks

  574. to the Father.

  575. Why?

  576. Because he has

  577. qualified you

  578. to share

  579. in the inheritance

  580. of his holy people

  581. in the kingdom

  582. of light.

  583. What's the

  584. greatest gift

  585. you could

  586. possibly have?

  587. What do you

  588. dream of

  589. if you were

  590. to receive

  591. a gift?

  592. Well,

  593. if you are

  594. a Christian,

  595. you have

  596. the greatest

  597. gift that

  598. you could

  599. possibly ever

  600. imagine.

  601. You have

  602. the gift

  603. that trumps

  604. every other

  605. gift imaginable.

  606. Did you see it

  607. there in verse 12?

  608. You share

  609. in the

  610. inheritance

  611. of his

  612. holy people.

  613. people.

  614. That

  615. inheritance

  616. is something

  617. we have

  618. now and

  619. it will

  620. be experienced

  621. in all

  622. its fullness

  623. to come.

  624. So what

  625. will it be

  626. like?

  627. What is

  628. this inheritance

  629. going to look

  630. like?

  631. Well,

  632. it's described

  633. in the same

  634. verse as

  635. the kingdom

  636. of light.

  637. That is a

  638. kingdom ruled

  639. by God

  640. where there

  641. is no

  642. darkness,

  643. no sin,

  644. no evil,

  645. no wickedness,

  646. no suffering,

  647. no sickness.

  648. It will be a

  649. life with

  650. Christ for

  651. all eternity

  652. who will

  653. continue to

  654. fill us with

  655. joy and

  656. peace never

  657. ending.

  658. It will be

  659. our forever

  660. home marked

  661. by beauty

  662. and harmony.

  663. This is

  664. God's gift

  665. to you.

  666. can you

  667. think of

  668. a better

  669. gift you

  670. could possibly

  671. have?

  672. This is

  673. your

  674. inheritance.

  675. This is

  676. what is

  677. written for

  678. you in

  679. God's

  680. will.

  681. Now to

  682. share in

  683. this

  684. inheritance

  685. we have

  686. to qualify

  687. don't we?

  688. So what

  689. does that

  690. mean for

  691. me?

  692. Do I

  693. have to

  694. achieve

  695. some

  696. certain

  697. standard

  698. of holiness

  699. to kind

  700. of somehow

  701. get into

  702. the

  703. holy

  704. joe

  705. club?

  706. Do I

  707. have to

  708. somehow

  709. prove

  710. myself

  711. to God

  712. that he

  713. will

  714. accept me?

  715. What is it

  716. I have to

  717. do to

  718. qualify for

  719. this amazing

  720. inheritance?

  721. What do you

  722. have to do?

  723. Nothing

  724. except

  725. receive it

  726. in faith.

  727. Look at

  728. verse 12.

  729. Who's

  730. qualified

  731. you?

  732. The

  733. Father

  734. who has

  735. qualified

  736. you.

  737. The

  738. Father

  739. qualifies

  740. us.

  741. It's not

  742. what we

  743. do but

  744. what God

  745. has done

  746. for us.

  747. He tells

  748. us what

  749. he's done

  750. for us.

  751. Verse 13

  752. He has

  753. rescued

  754. God

  755. has

  756. rescued

  757. He's

  758. rescued

  759. us from

  760. the dominion

  761. the rule

  762. of darkness

  763. and brought

  764. us into

  765. the kingdom

  766. of the

  767. Son He

  768. loves.

  769. Transferred

  770. from a

  771. kingdom of

  772. darkness

  773. into a

  774. kingdom of

  775. light

  776. a kingdom

  777. of love

  778. with His

  779. Son

  780. in whom

  781. we have

  782. redemption

  783. set free

  784. from our

  785. past

  786. our guilt

  787. and shame

  788. and receiving

  789. the forgiveness

  790. of sins.

  791. You see

  792. we were

  793. lost in a

  794. kingdom of

  795. darkness

  796. empty and

  797. hopeless

  798. bound to

  799. the ruler

  800. of this

  801. dark kingdom

  802. Satan

  803. himself

  804. enslaved

  805. to a

  806. life of

  807. sin.

  808. There was

  809. no way

  810. for us

  811. to escape

  812. or get

  813. out of

  814. this

  815. dark

  816. kingdom.

  817. in fact

  818. the Bible

  819. tells us

  820. that we

  821. even had

  822. no desire

  823. to escape.

  824. But God

  825. takes the

  826. initiative

  827. and God

  828. comes and

  829. intervenes

  830. into our

  831. life

  832. through His

  833. Son

  834. and He

  835. rescues

  836. us.

  837. He

  838. makes a

  839. way so

  840. we can

  841. escape

  842. and enter

  843. into a

  844. kingdom of

  845. light.

  846. Enter into

  847. the kingdom

  848. of the

  849. Son He

  850. loves.

  851. He

  852. takes us

  853. from our

  854. self-destructive

  855. hell-bound

  856. life and

  857. gives us a

  858. glorious

  859. inheritance.

  860. We receive

  861. it in

  862. thanks.

  863. And so

  864. we pray

  865. again.

  866. Father God

  867. we thank

  868. you that

  869. you have

  870. qualified us

  871. to share

  872. in your

  873. glorious

  874. inheritance.

  875. Thank you

  876. for rescuing

  877. and redeeming

  878. us and

  879. forgiving us

  880. of all

  881. our sin.

  882. We receive

  883. your gift

  884. with joyful

  885. thanks.

  886. Isn't that

  887. amazing?

  888. Which helps

  889. us to see

  890. that as we

  891. come in

  892. thanksgiving

  893. it leads

  894. to a

  895. humble

  896. confidence.

  897. We receive

  898. in thanks

  899. thanks so

  900. that we

  901. can ask

  902. confidently.

  903. You see

  904. he's not

  905. just stopping

  906. asking God

  907. and then

  908. suddenly going

  909. into a

  910. prayer of

  911. thanks.

  912. I think

  913. it's a

  914. prayer of

  915. thanks to

  916. help us

  917. see that

  918. we can

  919. ask God

  920. confidently.

  921. You see

  922. think of it

  923. this way.

  924. If God

  925. has given

  926. us the

  927. greatest

  928. gift ever

  929. being

  930. qualified to

  931. share in

  932. his

  933. inheritance

  934. how much

  935. more

  936. will he

  937. give to

  938. us all

  939. that we

  940. need as

  941. we wait

  942. for our

  943. inheritance.

  944. If our

  945. inheritance is

  946. guaranteed,

  947. it's stored

  948. up, it's

  949. coming, you

  950. will receive

  951. it, how

  952. much more

  953. will he

  954. give us

  955. everything we

  956. need while

  957. we're waiting?

  958. Or think of

  959. it this way,

  960. if God

  961. gave us the

  962. greatest gift

  963. for which

  964. we never

  965. asked or

  966. desired, but

  967. he gave it

  968. to you, how

  969. much more

  970. will he

  971. give what

  972. we do

  973. need when

  974. we humbly

  975. ask?

  976. If he

  977. gave you the

  978. greatest gift

  979. and you

  980. never asked

  981. for it,

  982. how much

  983. more will

  984. he give

  985. you what

  986. you need

  987. today and

  988. tomorrow

  989. because we

  990. humbly

  991. ask?

  992. you see

  993. sometimes we

  994. view God

  995. like some

  996. kind of

  997. magic genie,

  998. a God

  999. who we

  1000. have to

  1001. desperately

  1002. try and

  1003. please and

  1004. with some

  1005. kind of

  1006. magic prayer

  1007. formula, we

  1008. prize out of

  1009. God's hands

  1010. the things

  1011. that we

  1012. want.

  1013. Repetition,

  1014. same prayer

  1015. over and

  1016. over again.

  1017. No, God

  1018. isn't like

  1019. that.

  1020. God is a

  1021. generous

  1022. Father who

  1023. always gives

  1024. to us what

  1025. is best.

  1026. He's not

  1027. tight-fisted

  1028. or mean-hearted.

  1029. Just have a

  1030. look back at

  1031. the end of

  1032. verse 2,

  1033. chapter 1,

  1034. the last

  1035. part of

  1036. verse 2.

  1037. This shows

  1038. us how

  1039. generous our

  1040. Father is.

  1041. Grace

  1042. and peace

  1043. to you

  1044. from God

  1045. our Father.

  1046. These are

  1047. the gifts

  1048. he gives

  1049. to his

  1050. children,

  1051. grace

  1052. and peace

  1053. and all

  1054. that we

  1055. need as

  1056. we wait

  1057. our

  1058. inheritance.

  1059. So we

  1060. come in

  1061. humble

  1062. confidence

  1063. knowing that

  1064. he will

  1065. always give

  1066. what is

  1067. right and

  1068. best.

  1069. So we

  1070. pray.

  1071. Father,

  1072. we humbly

  1073. ask that

  1074. you will

  1075. give to

  1076. us all

  1077. we need

  1078. as we

  1079. live the

  1080. Christian

  1081. life.

  1082. Please

  1083. fill us

  1084. with the

  1085. knowledge of

  1086. your will,

  1087. strengthen

  1088. us with

  1089. all power

  1090. so that

  1091. we

  1092. please

  1093. you

  1094. in

  1095. all

  1096. things.

  1097. We

  1098. receive

  1099. these

  1100. gifts

  1101. in

  1102. thanks.

  1103. What a

  1104. tremendous

  1105. prayer.

  1106. But you

  1107. know what?

  1108. This is a

  1109. prayer we

  1110. pray as

  1111. a church.

  1112. These

  1113. aren't just

  1114. individual

  1115. prayers.

  1116. Look back

  1117. at verse

  1118. 9 there

  1119. with me.

  1120. He says,

  1121. we have

  1122. not

  1123. stopped

  1124. praying

  1125. for you.

  1126. Paul is

  1127. praying on

  1128. behalf of

  1129. the church.

  1130. He is

  1131. interceding

  1132. on behalf

  1133. of these

  1134. people.

  1135. So this

  1136. is a

  1137. prayer.

  1138. What we've

  1139. been looking

  1140. at is

  1141. our

  1142. encouragement

  1143. to pray

  1144. this prayer

  1145. for one

  1146. another.

  1147. So think

  1148. of it

  1149. like this.

  1150. Imagine

  1151. you're on

  1152. a plane

  1153. going off

  1154. to,

  1155. because it's

  1156. God's

  1157. will,

  1158. Paris.

  1159. Just

  1160. imagine.

  1161. You're

  1162. on a

  1163. plane and

  1164. suddenly you

  1165. experience a

  1166. loss of

  1167. cabin

  1168. pressure.

  1169. Immediately

  1170. those oxygen

  1171. masks just

  1172. pop down.

  1173. And if

  1174. you're sitting

  1175. beside someone

  1176. who can't

  1177. manage a

  1178. younger person

  1179. or for

  1180. whatever reason

  1181. they can't

  1182. put it on,

  1183. it's your

  1184. responsibility

  1185. to put that

  1186. mask on

  1187. them so

  1188. that they

  1189. can breathe.

  1190. Well,

  1191. aren't there

  1192. times when

  1193. we are so

  1194. overwhelmed

  1195. with the

  1196. pressures of

  1197. life.

  1198. Trials,

  1199. struggles,

  1200. and it

  1201. feels like

  1202. we've run

  1203. out of

  1204. oxygen,

  1205. we're

  1206. choking,

  1207. we're

  1208. suffocating,

  1209. we can't

  1210. cope,

  1211. we can't

  1212. even

  1213. pray.

  1214. So we

  1215. go to

  1216. someone and

  1217. we say,

  1218. will you

  1219. pray for

  1220. me?

  1221. will you

  1222. pray on

  1223. my behalf?

  1224. What a

  1225. great request

  1226. that we

  1227. are a

  1228. family,

  1229. brothers and

  1230. sisters,

  1231. who can

  1232. pray for

  1233. each other

  1234. so that

  1235. we can

  1236. ask God,

  1237. our generous

  1238. Father,

  1239. to give to

  1240. our brothers

  1241. and sisters

  1242. all that

  1243. we need.

  1244. Fill them

  1245. with the

  1246. knowledge of

  1247. your will,

  1248. strengthen

  1249. them with

  1250. your faith,

  1251. and give

  1252. them a

  1253. renewed

  1254. confidence

  1255. that they

  1256. too can

  1257. ask and

  1258. they will

  1259. receive.

  1260. Your

  1261. prayers

  1262. for

  1263. each

  1264. other

  1265. will help

  1266. them breathe

  1267. again.

  1268. This

  1269. week,

  1270. we're going

  1271. to gather

  1272. as a

  1273. church

  1274. family.

  1275. In your

  1276. notice sheet

  1277. at the

  1278. back of

  1279. it,

  1280. you'll

  1281. see the

  1282. timetable

  1283. there,

  1284. or if

  1285. you've

  1286. got the

  1287. book,

  1288. as Ralph

  1289. was pointing

  1290. out,

  1291. the different

  1292. occasions we

  1293. can gather

  1294. to pray.

  1295. And my

  1296. encouragement

  1297. to you,

  1298. as it is

  1299. to myself,

  1300. we're not

  1301. saying you'll

  1302. be there at

  1303. every prayer

  1304. event,

  1305. but just

  1306. highlight it,

  1307. mark it

  1308. off,

  1309. plan.

  1310. If you

  1311. don't plan,

  1312. it's not

  1313. going to

  1314. happen.

  1315. Come along

  1316. if you can't

  1317. be there at

  1318. the exact

  1319. time,

  1320. just come

  1321. soon after.

  1322. Come when

  1323. you can,

  1324. leave when

  1325. you have

  1326. to.

  1327. If you're

  1328. there for

  1329. 10 minutes,

  1330. 15 minutes,

  1331. that's fine.

  1332. Come when

  1333. you can,

  1334. leave when

  1335. you have

  1336. to.

  1337. And if

  1338. you find

  1339. praying

  1340. difficult,

  1341. and you're

  1342. not always

  1343. sure what

  1344. to pray

  1345. for,

  1346. so we'll

  1347. be using

  1348. these prayers

  1349. as a guide,

  1350. to be

  1351. praying for

  1352. the areas

  1353. of the

  1354. life of

  1355. the church,

  1356. the community

  1357. in which

  1358. we're in,

  1359. and our

  1360. mission

  1361. partners.

  1362. others.

  1363. So,

  1364. let's

  1365. use this

  1366. to pray

  1367. for one

  1368. another,

  1369. to pray

  1370. and ask

  1371. God that

  1372. he will

  1373. give to

  1374. us all

  1375. that we

  1376. need

  1377. as we

  1378. live the

  1379. Christian

  1380. life.

  1381. Well,

  1382. before we

  1383. sing,

  1384. let's

  1385. pray

  1386. together.

  1387. our

  1388. Father

  1389. God,

  1390. thank you

  1391. that you

  1392. are

  1393. generous

  1394. and

  1395. exceedingly

  1396. good,

  1397. and that

  1398. you

  1399. always

  1400. and only

  1401. give

  1402. the very

  1403. best

  1404. gifts

  1405. to your

  1406. children.

  1407. Thank you

  1408. for the

  1409. gift of

  1410. prayer,

  1411. that we

  1412. can come

  1413. and talk

  1414. to you

  1415. as we

  1416. are now,

  1417. and ask

  1418. you that

  1419. the power

  1420. you used

  1421. to bring

  1422. this world

  1423. into being,

  1424. the power

  1425. that raised

  1426. Christ from

  1427. the dead

  1428. and defeated

  1429. death

  1430. and gives

  1431. life,

  1432. that we

  1433. might have

  1434. that power

  1435. so that we

  1436. would please

  1437. you in

  1438. every way.

  1439. encourage

  1440. us to

  1441. be people

  1442. of prayer

  1443. for our

  1444. church

  1445. family,

  1446. especially

  1447. for those

  1448. who are not

  1449. able to

  1450. pray or

  1451. are going

  1452. through trials.

  1453. May we

  1454. pray on

  1455. their behalf,

  1456. knowing

  1457. that you

  1458. will give.

  1459. Thank you,

  1460. Father,

  1461. for teaching

  1462. us today.

  1463. Amen.

  1464. Well, we're

  1465. going to

  1466. sing.

  1467. What a

  1468. friend we

  1469. have in

  1470. Jesus.

  1471. He's with

  1472. us and

  1473. for us,

  1474. not against

  1475. us.

  1476. All our

  1477. sins we

  1478. can bring

  1479. and he

  1480. will forgive.

  1481. take

  1482. fire and

  1483. the
