  1. Thanks very much Sam for leading this morning and thanks to the musicians again for playing.

  2. It's always good to have people who can play music and help us along in our singing.

  3. Thanks again Sam for your organisation of yesterday. It was a good time, a great encouragement.

  4. Let's turn in our Bibles please to Colossians.

  5. This is the book we're looking at. If you've missed any of the talks along the way, you'll find them all on the website.

  6. And again, thanks to Christopher who does that.

  7. And yeah, they're all in good order now so you can follow up on past series as well.

  8. But you'll find them there. We're going to read this morning from Colossians chapter 2, starting at verse 8 through to verse 15.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  9. So let's hear God's word together.

  10. Colossians 2, starting at verse 8 through to verse 15.

  11. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world, rather than on Christ.

  12. For in Christ all the fullness of the deity lives in bodily form.

  13. And in Christ you have been brought to fullness.

  14. He that is Christ is the head over every power and authority.

  15. In Christ you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands.

  16. Your whole self, ruled by the flesh, was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism,

  17. in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

  18. When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ.

  19. He forgave us all our sins.

  20. Having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us,

  21. he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

  22. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

  23. Well, these are rich words and we need God's help to understand and apply them.

  24. So let's pray and ask for his help now.

  25. Father God, we thank you again for all your many blessings to us.

  26. Thank you that we can meet together like this in peace and in safety.

  27. Thank you that we can enjoy one another's company and support.

  28. And thank you that you have given to us your word.

  29. That the God who made this universe has written down his word for us today.

  30. So that as we listen to it, we can hear your voice speaking to our hearts afresh.

  31. So please, will you encourage us.

  32. And would you meet every need of every person here today.

  33. In Jesus' name we pray.

  34. Amen.

  35. Life with Christ is good.

  36. But you know what?

  37. It can be so much better.

  38. Wouldn't you like to experience the best life, the good life?

  39. And please don't misunderstand me.

  40. Christ is a good place for us to start.

  41. But don't let that restrict you.

  42. There is so much more beyond Christ to experience.

  43. Well, be very careful of such teaching.

  44. Look at verse 8.

  45. See to it that no one, including the preacher,

  46. takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy.

  47. We don't know exactly what this philosophy or teaching is,

  48. but we do know its source.

  49. Continue with me through verse 8.

  50. It depends on human tradition.

  51. In other words, it is nothing less than the imaginations and speculations of people.

  52. And it also depends on, the rest of verse 8,

  53. the elemental spiritual forces of this world.

  54. That is, its roots, the teaching of this,

  55. its roots are sinister, evil,

  56. luring you away from the truth.

  57. The problem is, this teaching depends on other things.

  58. Do you see the last sentence of verse 8?

  59. Rather than on Christ.

  60. Their foundations are in other things except Christ.

  61. Christ is a good place to start, they say,

  62. but there is something more.

  63. Christ can meet some of your spiritual needs,

  64. but not all of your spiritual needs.

  65. Now we face the same kind of deceptive philosophy today.

  66. Let me share with you two that I came up with.

  67. Christ plus religious tradition.

  68. So people will say,

  69. Christ is good,

  70. but it's your religious traditions that really count.

  71. It's not so much who Christ is,

  72. but believing in your rituals and your practices.

  73. Or how about this one?

  74. Christ plus personal experience.

  75. Christ is good,

  76. but it's your personal experience that counts.

  77. It's not so much who Christ is,

  78. but what you feel and think is best for you.

  79. Now these things sound right,

  80. they can almost feel good,

  81. but we've got to be careful,

  82. it's deceptive.

  83. Such teaching, as we see in verse 8,

  84. is human speculation.

  85. It depends on human tradition.

  86. It's luring you away from the truth.

  87. It's not Christ plus that we need.

  88. We need Christ alone.

  89. You see, if we add anything onto Christ,

  90. we're actually taking away from Christ.

  91. And that's dangerous.

  92. Rather than free you,

  93. look again at the beginning of verse 8,

  94. it takes you captive.

  95. And rather than fill you,

  96. it leaves you hollow,

  97. it leaves you empty.

  98. It's not Christ plus something else,

  99. but Christ alone.

  100. And we're going to look at three things

  101. in the remaining verses

  102. that show us that Christ is enough

  103. for us as we walk the Christian life.

  104. Three things.

  105. We have fullness in Christ,

  106. we're made alive with Christ,

  107. and we experience victory through Christ.

  108. So fullness in Christ,

  109. alive with Christ,

  110. and victory through Christ.

  111. So let's look at the first one.

  112. We have fullness in Christ.

  113. In Christ, we have all that we need

  114. to live the Christian life.

  115. Three things are going to help us see this.

  116. Here's the first one.

  117. We have union with Christ.

  118. Look at verse 9.

  119. For in Christ,

  120. all the fullness of the deity

  121. lives in bodily form.

  122. Now to help us understand that,

  123. we can go back to chapter 1,

  124. verse 9,

  125. where the same thing is said.

  126. For God was pleased

  127. to have all his fullness

  128. dwell in Christ.

  129. Christ.

  130. All of God,

  131. so if my fist,

  132. if you like,

  133. is God,

  134. and this is Christ,

  135. all of God

  136. is in Christ.

  137. That's why it says,

  138. if we go back to chapter 2,

  139. verse 10,

  140. the very last sentence,

  141. Christ is the head

  142. over every power

  143. and authority.

  144. That's actually a position

  145. that belongs to God alone.

  146. But here it's telling us

  147. that Christ

  148. is the head

  149. over every power

  150. and authority.

  151. In other words,

  152. Christ is God.

  153. And the more we know

  154. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  155. the more we know

  156. who God is.

  157. Now look at verse 10.

  158. So we've seen that

  159. in Christ

  160. is God.

  161. And now we're told

  162. at the beginning

  163. of verse 10

  164. that we are

  165. in Christ.

  166. That's who we are

  167. if we're trusting in him.

  168. Go back to chapter 1,

  169. verse 2.

  170. Remember how he described

  171. the church

  172. to God's holy people

  173. in Colossae,

  174. the faithful brothers

  175. and sisters

  176. in Christ.

  177. Now put these

  178. two things together.

  179. If God is

  180. in Christ

  181. and we

  182. are in Christ

  183. then

  184. we have

  185. been brought

  186. to fullness.

  187. If all of God

  188. is in Christ

  189. and we are

  190. in Christ

  191. then verse 10

  192. we have been brought

  193. to fullness.

  194. To be

  195. in Christ,

  196. to be trusting

  197. in him

  198. is to be

  199. filled

  200. with the

  201. fullness of God.

  202. Which means

  203. Christ

  204. is

  205. enough.

  206. All that we

  207. ever need to

  208. know of God,

  209. all that we

  210. could ever have

  211. or receive

  212. from God

  213. is found

  214. in Christ.

  215. Therefore

  216. we can say

  217. Christ

  218. is enough

  219. for me.

  220. Christ

  221. is sufficient

  222. for me

  223. in my

  224. walk

  225. with him.

  226. And if

  227. you have

  228. been filled

  229. with the

  230. fullness

  231. of God,

  232. with all

  233. the greatness

  234. and glory

  235. of God,

  236. if we've

  237. been filled

  238. with him,

  239. how could

  240. you ever

  241. think

  242. that you're

  243. missing

  244. something?

  245. How can

  246. we ever

  247. say

  248. I don't

  249. have enough

  250. if we've

  251. been filled

  252. with the

  253. fullness

  254. of God?

  255. God

  256. has given

  257. us

  258. everything.

  259. He's given

  260. us

  261. himself

  262. so that

  263. we could

  264. be

  265. eternally

  266. satisfied.

  267. You see,

  268. to know

  269. Christ

  270. is to

  271. know

  272. God.

  273. And if

  274. you have

  275. God,

  276. then you

  277. can never

  278. add anything

  279. better and

  280. greater

  281. onto that.

  282. Christ

  283. is enough

  284. for you

  285. and for

  286. me.

  287. Maybe

  288. you're

  289. asking,

  290. well,

  291. okay,

  292. this fullness

  293. of Christ

  294. in me,

  295. how can

  296. I experience

  297. that for

  298. myself?

  299. Well,

  300. very simply

  301. through faith

  302. in Christ.

  303. We have

  304. this union

  305. with Christ,

  306. we have

  307. this fullness

  308. as we

  309. place our

  310. trust,

  311. our confidence

  312. in him.

  313. We are

  314. united to

  315. him,

  316. we're

  317. bound to

  318. him,

  319. we're

  320. in him,

  321. we're

  322. incorporated

  323. into him.

  324. It's an

  325. eternal

  326. union that

  327. can never

  328. be broken,

  329. ruined,

  330. or destroyed.

  331. His

  332. life

  333. becomes

  334. my life.

  335. So think

  336. of it like

  337. this,

  338. think of

  339. a marriage.

  340. So when

  341. Kirstie and

  342. I got

  343. married,

  344. we became

  345. one.

  346. The two

  347. became

  348. one.

  349. Through our

  350. vows and

  351. promises and

  352. commitments,

  353. my life

  354. became her

  355. life and

  356. her life

  357. became my

  358. life.

  359. We were

  360. united,

  361. we were

  362. bound.

  363. Well,

  364. in a

  365. much

  366. deeper

  367. and

  368. eternal

  369. way,

  370. through

  371. our

  372. faith,

  373. by trusting

  374. our

  375. life to

  376. Christ,

  377. his

  378. life

  379. becomes

  380. my

  381. life.

  382. All

  383. that

  384. Christ

  385. has

  386. becomes

  387. ours.

  388. He

  389. has

  390. the

  391. fullness

  392. of

  393. God

  394. and if

  395. we're

  396. in him,

  397. we have

  398. his

  399. fullness.

  400. We don't

  401. need

  402. anything

  403. else.

  404. We don't

  405. need to

  406. add on

  407. to

  408. Christ.

  409. So,

  410. first,

  411. we have

  412. fullness

  413. in

  414. Christ.

  415. Second,

  416. we've

  417. been made

  418. alive

  419. with

  420. Christ.

  421. In

  422. Christ,

  423. we have

  424. the

  425. best

  426. life.

  427. And

  428. again,

  429. three things

  430. are going

  431. to help

  432. us see

  433. this,

  434. how it

  435. works

  436. out.

  437. First,

  438. we are

  439. circumcised

  440. by Christ.

  441. Look at

  442. verse 11.

  443. in

  444. Christ,

  445. again,

  446. so it's

  447. that union

  448. language as

  449. we trust

  450. in him,

  451. in him

  452. you are

  453. also

  454. circumcised

  455. with a

  456. circumcision

  457. not

  458. performed

  459. by human

  460. hands.

  461. Now,

  462. circumcision

  463. was an

  464. Old

  465. Testament

  466. covenant

  467. sign given

  468. to God's

  469. people.

  470. The

  471. foreskin

  472. of every

  473. baby boy

  474. was cut

  475. off.

  476. It was

  477. a mark

  478. or it

  479. was a

  480. sign

  481. to show

  482. you

  483. that

  484. you

  485. belonged

  486. to

  487. God.

  488. However,

  489. circumcision

  490. was always

  491. outward

  492. and

  493. physical.

  494. It was

  495. just a

  496. mark.

  497. It never

  498. changed

  499. the

  500. inside.

  501. It never

  502. changed

  503. the

  504. heart.

  505. What

  506. was

  507. needed

  508. was

  509. something

  510. inward

  511. and

  512. something

  513. spiritual.

  514. In

  515. fact,

  516. God

  517. told

  518. Moses,

  519. or God

  520. told the

  521. people

  522. through

  523. Moses,

  524. this is

  525. what God

  526. said,

  527. he

  528. says,

  529. I want

  530. you to

  531. circumcise

  532. your

  533. hearts

  534. and don't

  535. be

  536. hard

  537. hearted

  538. any

  539. longer.

  540. Well,

  541. of course,

  542. God didn't

  543. mean to

  544. physically

  545. cut out

  546. your heart

  547. with a

  548. knife.

  549. No,

  550. God was

  551. saying,

  552. what you

  553. need

  554. is not

  555. something

  556. physical

  557. and outward,

  558. but you

  559. need something

  560. inner

  561. and

  562. spiritual.

  563. You

  564. need to

  565. change

  566. the

  567. inside.

  568. You

  569. need to

  570. cut

  571. away

  572. the

  573. sinful

  574. self

  575. so that

  576. you

  577. can

  578. be

  579. devoted

  580. to

  581. me.

  582. And

  583. that's

  584. what

  585. Christ

  586. came

  587. to do

  588. for us.

  589. So,

  590. look at

  591. the rest

  592. of verse

  593. 11.

  594. Your

  595. whole

  596. self

  597. ruled

  598. by the

  599. flesh,

  600. so when

  601. it uses

  602. that term

  603. flesh,

  604. it's

  605. talking

  606. about

  607. the

  608. sinful

  609. desires

  610. of the

  611. heart,

  612. your

  613. whole

  614. self

  615. ruled

  616. by the

  617. sinful

  618. desires

  619. of the

  620. heart

  621. was

  622. put

  623. off

  624. or

  625. cut

  626. off

  627. when

  628. you

  629. were

  630. circumcised

  631. by

  632. Christ.

  633. In

  634. other

  635. words,

  636. our

  637. hearts

  638. which

  639. represent

  640. our

  641. true

  642. selves

  643. and

  644. are

  645. ruled

  646. by

  647. sin,

  648. we

  649. want

  650. to

  651. live

  652. God's

  653. way.

  654. But

  655. that

  656. needs

  657. changed

  658. and

  659. we

  660. can

  661. never

  662. change

  663. that

  664. on

  665. ourselves.

  666. We

  667. don't

  668. even

  669. want

  670. to

  671. change

  672. our

  673. hearts.

  674. We

  675. need

  676. Christ

  677. to

  678. come

  679. to

  680. us

  681. and

  682. change

  683. us

  684. inwardly

  685. to

  686. give

  687. us

  688. a

  689. circumcision

  690. of

  691. the

  692. heart,

  693. not

  694. performed

  695. by

  696. human

  697. hands,

  698. but

  699. a

  700. spiritual

  701. working

  702. of

  703. God

  704. in

  705. our

  706. life.

  707. It's

  708. like

  709. Christ

  710. performs

  711. inner

  712. spiritual

  713. surgery.

  714. You

  715. know,

  716. if you

  717. were to

  718. go to

  719. the

  720. doctors

  721. and

  722. say,

  723. there's

  724. something

  725. wrong

  726. with your

  727. heart,

  728. there's

  729. a valve

  730. that's

  731. blocked,

  732. well,

  733. you go

  734. into

  735. surgery,

  736. they cut

  737. open your

  738. heart,

  739. they do

  740. all the

  741. work,

  742. they take

  743. out what

  744. needs to

  745. be taken

  746. out,

  747. so that

  748. you can

  749. live.

  750. Well,

  751. Christ does

  752. that to

  753. us inwardly,

  754. spiritually,

  755. he cuts

  756. us open,

  757. he circumcises,

  758. he cuts

  759. away the

  760. sinful heart,

  761. so that we

  762. can live for

  763. him.

  764. Well,

  765. you say,

  766. how on

  767. earth does

  768. that happen,

  769. because it's

  770. all kind of

  771. picture language,

  772. isn't it?

  773. How does

  774. Christ cut

  775. away our

  776. sinful

  777. hearts?

  778. Well,

  779. baptised

  780. in Christ.

  781. Christ cuts

  782. away the

  783. sinful self

  784. by his

  785. death and

  786. resurrection,

  787. which is

  788. symbolised in

  789. baptism.

  790. Let me say

  791. that again,

  792. it's quite a

  793. lot there.

  794. He cuts

  795. away the

  796. sinful self

  797. by his

  798. death and

  799. resurrection,

  800. which is

  801. symbolised in

  802. baptism.

  803. So look at

  804. verse 12.

  805. So the

  806. cutting off

  807. has been

  808. done by

  809. Christ.

  810. Verse 12,

  811. having been

  812. buried with

  813. him in

  814. baptism,

  815. in which

  816. you were

  817. also raised

  818. with him

  819. through your

  820. faith in the

  821. working of

  822. God,

  823. who raised

  824. him from

  825. the dead.

  826. You see,

  827. when Christ

  828. died,

  829. and when

  830. Christ was

  831. buried,

  832. we died

  833. and we

  834. were buried.

  835. We died to

  836. our sinful

  837. self.

  838. Through

  839. faith,

  840. our whole

  841. self,

  842. ruled by the

  843. sinful nature,

  844. was put to

  845. death.

  846. death.

  847. And similarly,

  848. when Christ

  849. was raised

  850. from the

  851. dead,

  852. we were

  853. also raised

  854. from the

  855. dead.

  856. We were

  857. raised to

  858. new life.

  859. Through

  860. faith,

  861. our whole

  862. self is

  863. now ruled

  864. by Christ

  865. and we

  866. live for

  867. him.

  868. Now all

  869. of that

  870. is symbolised

  871. through the

  872. act of

  873. baptism.

  874. You know

  875. what baptism

  876. looks like

  877. when you

  878. go down

  879. under the

  880. water.

  881. It's a

  882. picture of

  883. you saying,

  884. I am

  885. dying with

  886. Christ.

  887. When Christ

  888. died,

  889. I died.

  890. I died to

  891. my sinful

  892. self.

  893. Then when

  894. you come

  895. up out

  896. of the

  897. water,

  898. it's a

  899. picture of

  900. being raised

  901. with Christ.

  902. We now

  903. live for

  904. him.

  905. You see,

  906. Christ deals

  907. with the

  908. internal,

  909. not the

  910. external.

  911. He changes

  912. us on

  913. the inside,

  914. not the

  915. outside.

  916. He gives

  917. us new

  918. life.

  919. Look at

  920. verse 13.

  921. When you

  922. were dead

  923. in your

  924. sins and

  925. in the

  926. uncircumcision

  927. of your

  928. flesh, so

  929. before Christ

  930. dealt with

  931. your inner

  932. life, he

  933. says God

  934. made you

  935. alive with

  936. Christ.

  937. You see,

  938. when I

  939. trusted

  940. Christ,

  941. the old

  942. died and

  943. the new

  944. lives.

  945. When I

  946. trusted

  947. Christ, the

  948. old Johnny

  949. died.

  950. There was a

  951. dying to

  952. it all.

  953. And the

  954. new Johnny,

  955. well, he's

  956. alive.

  957. Look what

  958. God has

  959. done for

  960. us.

  961. It is

  962. nothing less

  963. than a

  964. spiritual

  965. resurrection.

  966. Look at

  967. the end

  968. of verse

  969. 13.

  970. He made

  971. you alive

  972. with Christ.

  973. You see,

  974. spiritually, we

  975. often see

  976. ourselves as

  977. people who

  978. are in a

  979. bit of

  980. trouble and

  981. we're crying

  982. out to God

  983. for help.

  984. We're like a

  985. person struggling

  986. in the sea.

  987. We cry out

  988. and someone

  989. hoists a

  990. life belt out

  991. to us and

  992. pulls us into

  993. safety.

  994. And we

  995. can say,

  996. my life

  997. was saved.

  998. And somehow

  999. that's how we

  1000. think it is

  1001. with God.

  1002. We see

  1003. something that

  1004. needs to be

  1005. put right and

  1006. we cry out

  1007. to God to

  1008. come and

  1009. help us.

  1010. Well, it's

  1011. kind of

  1012. right.

  1013. Because our

  1014. spiritual condition

  1015. is much

  1016. worse than

  1017. that.

  1018. But our

  1019. salvation is

  1020. even greater

  1021. than that.

  1022. Rather than

  1023. see ourselves

  1024. flailing around

  1025. on the surface

  1026. looking for

  1027. someone,

  1028. to help.

  1029. Spiritually,

  1030. we're like a

  1031. corpse at the

  1032. bottom of the

  1033. ocean.

  1034. We're dead.

  1035. And dead

  1036. people don't

  1037. cry out for

  1038. help.

  1039. We need

  1040. somebody to

  1041. come and

  1042. intervene into

  1043. our life and

  1044. give us

  1045. life.

  1046. That's why it

  1047. says, you

  1048. were dead

  1049. in your

  1050. sins.

  1051. But God

  1052. came and

  1053. made you

  1054. alive.

  1055. life with

  1056. Christ.

  1057. Now, what

  1058. life is

  1059. better than

  1060. that?

  1061. To be

  1062. given

  1063. resurrection

  1064. life.

  1065. New life

  1066. with him

  1067. today.

  1068. New life

  1069. with him

  1070. for an

  1071. eternity.

  1072. We have

  1073. the best

  1074. life ever.

  1075. We've been

  1076. made alive

  1077. with Christ.

  1078. Christ.

  1079. And then

  1080. third, we

  1081. experience

  1082. victory through

  1083. Christ.

  1084. Through

  1085. Christ, we

  1086. can live a

  1087. victorious life.

  1088. And again, this

  1089. is just to help

  1090. us through and

  1091. to get the big

  1092. picture, three

  1093. things.

  1094. To see how we

  1095. have victory

  1096. through Christ.

  1097. First, we're

  1098. forgiven by God.

  1099. Look at the end

  1100. of verse 13.

  1101. God forgave

  1102. us all

  1103. our sins.

  1104. Sin is not

  1105. just misdemeanors.

  1106. Sin is our

  1107. rebellion

  1108. against God.

  1109. It's our

  1110. personal demand

  1111. that we want

  1112. to rule our

  1113. own lives and

  1114. do our own

  1115. thing.

  1116. It's seen in

  1117. our selfish

  1118. actions every

  1119. single day.

  1120. It's heard in

  1121. our angry

  1122. words.

  1123. we see it

  1124. in the

  1125. thoughts in

  1126. our twisted

  1127. minds.

  1128. And it

  1129. separates us

  1130. from God.

  1131. It breaks

  1132. relationships with

  1133. others and it

  1134. destroys our

  1135. own self.

  1136. Sin is a

  1137. burden that

  1138. weighs us

  1139. down and

  1140. cripples us.

  1141. And left to

  1142. ourselves, we're

  1143. just suffering

  1144. with our guilt

  1145. and shame.

  1146. But what has

  1147. God done for

  1148. us?

  1149. Verse 13.

  1150. He forgave

  1151. us all our

  1152. sins.

  1153. Not just

  1154. some of our

  1155. sins, but

  1156. every single

  1157. one.

  1158. Not just the

  1159. public ones

  1160. that people get

  1161. to see, but

  1162. the secret

  1163. private ones

  1164. that people

  1165. don't see.

  1166. Not just the

  1167. one-off sins,

  1168. but the daily

  1169. habitual sin.

  1170. He forgives us

  1171. of all of

  1172. our sin.

  1173. There's no

  1174. sin too big,

  1175. no sin too

  1176. dark, no

  1177. sin too

  1178. destructive,

  1179. that God

  1180. can't forgive.

  1181. Now that's

  1182. good news for

  1183. you and me,

  1184. but how does

  1185. he forgive?

  1186. Well, we're

  1187. told it's

  1188. nailed to

  1189. Christ or

  1190. it's nailed

  1191. to the

  1192. cross.

  1193. Verse 14

  1194. shows us

  1195. how we are

  1196. forgiven.

  1197. He forgave

  1198. us all

  1199. our sins,

  1200. having

  1201. cancelled the

  1202. charge of

  1203. our legal

  1204. indebtedness

  1205. which stood

  1206. against us

  1207. and condemned

  1208. us.

  1209. He has

  1210. taken it

  1211. away,

  1212. nailing it

  1213. to the

  1214. cross.

  1215. Now if we

  1216. commit crime

  1217. and we're

  1218. caught and

  1219. we're arrested,

  1220. we're hoisted

  1221. off to court.

  1222. And there we

  1223. sit in court.

  1224. and the

  1225. evidence is

  1226. carefully detailed

  1227. and recorded

  1228. before the

  1229. judge.

  1230. The charge

  1231. for our

  1232. crime is

  1233. then decided

  1234. and we're

  1235. sentenced.

  1236. Well, here we

  1237. are.

  1238. We all stand

  1239. before God

  1240. as guilty

  1241. before the

  1242. judge.

  1243. Verse 14

  1244. tells us

  1245. the charge

  1246. of our

  1247. legal

  1248. indebtedness

  1249. which stood

  1250. against us.

  1251. That is,

  1252. all the

  1253. evidence of

  1254. our guilt

  1255. through our

  1256. whole life

  1257. is all

  1258. piled up,

  1259. is all

  1260. carefully

  1261. detailed

  1262. and recorded

  1263. and presented

  1264. as it were

  1265. towards God.

  1266. And it

  1267. stands over

  1268. us.

  1269. It condemns

  1270. us.

  1271. We're guilty.

  1272. And we've

  1273. got no

  1274. defence,

  1275. no excuse.

  1276. The record

  1277. is crystal

  1278. clear.

  1279. The sentence

  1280. of God's

  1281. judgement

  1282. hangs over

  1283. us.

  1284. But look

  1285. what happens

  1286. verse 14.

  1287. Look at the

  1288. beginning of

  1289. verse 14.

  1290. He cancelled

  1291. the charge

  1292. that was

  1293. against us.

  1294. And how

  1295. did he do

  1296. it?

  1297. Look at the

  1298. end of

  1299. verse 14.

  1300. He took

  1301. it away

  1302. by nailing

  1303. it to

  1304. the cross.

  1305. Can you

  1306. picture that

  1307. in your

  1308. mind?

  1309. That if

  1310. we are

  1311. trusting in

  1312. Christ today,

  1313. all our

  1314. sin,

  1315. every single

  1316. bit of it,

  1317. was taken

  1318. on by

  1319. Christ on

  1320. himself.

  1321. The

  1322. evidence

  1323. against me

  1324. has been

  1325. nailed to

  1326. Christ.

  1327. The

  1328. judgement

  1329. that is

  1330. mine has

  1331. now fallen

  1332. on Christ.

  1333. And the

  1334. charge against

  1335. me has

  1336. been cancelled

  1337. through Christ.

  1338. An old

  1339. hymn that

  1340. we sometimes

  1341. sing here

  1342. puts it

  1343. like this.

  1344. My sin,

  1345. oh the

  1346. bliss of

  1347. this

  1348. glorious

  1349. thought,

  1350. my sin,

  1351. not in

  1352. part,

  1353. but the

  1354. whole,

  1355. all of it,

  1356. is nailed

  1357. to the

  1358. cross,

  1359. and I

  1360. bear it

  1361. no more.

  1362. Praise the

  1363. Lord,

  1364. praise the

  1365. Lord,

  1366. oh my

  1367. soul.

  1368. Sin is

  1369. nailed to

  1370. the cross,

  1371. Christ.

  1372. And it

  1373. stays there,

  1374. never to

  1375. be taken

  1376. with us

  1377. again.

  1378. That's the

  1379. victory we

  1380. have through

  1381. Christ.

  1382. But there

  1383. is even

  1384. more to

  1385. that

  1386. victory.

  1387. Our

  1388. victorious

  1389. Christ.

  1390. Look at

  1391. verse 15.

  1392. Christ has

  1393. disarmed

  1394. the

  1395. powers and

  1396. authorities.

  1397. Now what

  1398. do you

  1399. think of

  1400. the powers

  1401. and

  1402. authorities

  1403. here?

  1404. Well, you

  1405. can talk to

  1406. me afterwards,

  1407. but I

  1408. think the

  1409. powers and

  1410. authorities

  1411. here are

  1412. Satan and

  1413. his minions.

  1414. You see,

  1415. Satan has

  1416. always been at

  1417. war with

  1418. Christ,

  1419. hasn't he?

  1420. Through the

  1421. temptation in

  1422. the desert,

  1423. as we follow

  1424. his life through

  1425. the Gospels,

  1426. the opposition

  1427. of religious

  1428. leaders,

  1429. people pursued

  1430. him,

  1431. people were

  1432. against him,

  1433. and behind

  1434. it stood

  1435. the powers

  1436. and authorities

  1437. of Satan.

  1438. They were at

  1439. war against

  1440. Christ.

  1441. And it

  1442. seems like

  1443. Satan won

  1444. the battle.

  1445. When Christ

  1446. was charged

  1447. by those

  1448. religious rulers

  1449. and sentenced

  1450. by the Roman

  1451. authorities,

  1452. when he was

  1453. stripped

  1454. naked,

  1455. and when he

  1456. was beaten

  1457. and whipped,

  1458. and when

  1459. the crown

  1460. of thorns

  1461. were crushed

  1462. on his

  1463. head,

  1464. and the

  1465. nails were

  1466. driven into

  1467. his hands

  1468. and feet,

  1469. all hell

  1470. went wild

  1471. in delight,

  1472. because Christ

  1473. was defeated.

  1474. But no,

  1475. what Satan

  1476. thought was

  1477. the final blow

  1478. on Christ

  1479. turned out

  1480. to be Christ's

  1481. victory

  1482. over Satan.

  1483. Verse 15,

  1484. he disarmed

  1485. the powers

  1486. and authorities.

  1487. He made

  1488. a public

  1489. spectacle

  1490. of them,

  1491. triumphing

  1492. over them

  1493. by the

  1494. cross.

  1495. One writer

  1496. helpfully put

  1497. it like this,

  1498. follow on

  1499. screen,

  1500. the cross

  1501. was not

  1502. the defeat

  1503. of Christ

  1504. at the hands

  1505. of the powers,

  1506. it was the

  1507. defeat of the

  1508. powers at the

  1509. hands,

  1510. yes,

  1511. the bleeding

  1512. hands of

  1513. Christ.

  1514. You see,

  1515. as Christ

  1516. died on

  1517. the cross,

  1518. that was a

  1519. demonstration of

  1520. the greatest

  1521. power ever,

  1522. because he

  1523. defeated Satan

  1524. who throws

  1525. at us

  1526. every accusation,

  1527. who reminds

  1528. us of all

  1529. our sin and

  1530. all our past

  1531. and all our

  1532. failure,

  1533. and points

  1534. fingers and

  1535. says you're

  1536. useless,

  1537. you're rubbish,

  1538. you're a

  1539. failure.

  1540. But Christ

  1541. has taken

  1542. away,

  1543. he has

  1544. disarmed

  1545. Satan,

  1546. he has

  1547. taken away

  1548. that weapon

  1549. of accusation,

  1550. so it can

  1551. never,

  1552. ever touch

  1553. us again.

  1554. You see,

  1555. through the

  1556. death of

  1557. Christ,

  1558. our salvation

  1559. is secured,

  1560. through the

  1561. suffering of

  1562. Christ,

  1563. our debt

  1564. and sin

  1565. is forgiven.

  1566. You know,

  1567. in ancient

  1568. times,

  1569. when kings

  1570. went out to

  1571. battle,

  1572. and they won

  1573. their battle,

  1574. they would

  1575. march back

  1576. into the

  1577. city,

  1578. and in

  1579. tow would

  1580. be their

  1581. enemies,

  1582. their disarmed

  1583. enemies,

  1584. in chains,

  1585. following the

  1586. conquering king,

  1587. and people

  1588. would line

  1589. the streets,

  1590. cheering their

  1591. victorious,

  1592. triumphant

  1593. king.

  1594. Well,

  1595. the cross

  1596. is God's

  1597. victory parade.

  1598. As people

  1599. walked by,

  1600. they saw

  1601. suffering and

  1602. death,

  1603. a crucifixion,

  1604. brokenness.

  1605. But it is

  1606. through the

  1607. death of

  1608. Christ that

  1609. we have

  1610. victory.

  1611. The cross

  1612. is God's

  1613. victory parade.

  1614. Jesus Christ

  1615. is our

  1616. victorious,

  1617. triumphant

  1618. king.

  1619. He has

  1620. won,

  1621. and we

  1622. now share

  1623. in that

  1624. victory.

  1625. And if

  1626. Christ has

  1627. won the

  1628. greatest

  1629. battle,

  1630. if he

  1631. has defeated

  1632. our

  1633. greatest

  1634. enemy,

  1635. why would

  1636. we ever

  1637. go looking

  1638. for something

  1639. more?

  1640. He's done

  1641. it all.

  1642. He's

  1643. enough.

  1644. He's

  1645. sufficient.

  1646. so let

  1647. us

  1648. together,

  1649. verse 8,

  1650. see to

  1651. it that

  1652. no one

  1653. takes you

  1654. captive

  1655. through hollow

  1656. and deceptive

  1657. philosophy.

  1658. Be careful

  1659. of dangerous

  1660. deception.

  1661. People who

  1662. say,

  1663. Christ is

  1664. not enough.

  1665. You need

  1666. something more.

  1667. No,

  1668. we have

  1669. fullness in

  1670. Christ.

  1671. We've

  1672. been made

  1673. alive with

  1674. Christ,

  1675. and we

  1676. experience

  1677. victory

  1678. through

  1679. Christ.

  1680. Christ is

  1681. enough.

  1682. He's

  1683. sufficient for

  1684. you and

  1685. for me.

  1686. Let's

  1687. pray.

  1688. Amen.

  1689. Amen.

  1690. Amen.

  1691. Amen.

  1692. Amen.

  1693. Amen.

  1694. Amen.

  1695. Amen.

  1696. Amen.

  1697. Amen.

  1698. Amen.

  1699. Amen.

  1700. Amen.

  1701. Amen.

  1702. Amen.

  1703. Amen.

  1704. Amen.

  1705. Amen.

  1706. Amen.

  1707. Amen.

  1708. Amen.

  1709. Let us

  1710. pause,

  1711. and reflect,

  1712. on where

  1713. we so often

  1714. put our

  1715. hope and

  1716. our trust.

  1717. Father,

  1718. thank you

  1719. that Christ

  1720. is

  1721. enough,

  1722. and he

  1723. is sufficient

  1724. for our

  1725. life today.

  1726. Thank you

1727. that we have fullness in Christ.

1728. We have all of God with us

  1729. and for us.

1730. Thank you that we have been made alive with Christ,

1731. new life to live your way

1732. and new life forevermore in your eternal kingdom.

1733. Thank you that we have victory in Christ,

1734. all our sin dealt with,

1735. never to be held against us.

  1736. Never to be accused,

  1737. never to be condemned,

1738. but living with the sure and certain hope

1739. of life with you for all eternity.

1740. Father, thank you for the gift of Christ

1741. and thank you that through our faith in him,

1742. his life becomes my life.

  1743. Thank you so much

1744. and it's in his name we pray.

  1745. Amen.

1746. We're going to sing together.

  1747. Amen.

1748. I once was lost in darkest night,

1749. yet thought I knew the way.

1750. The sin that promised joy in life,

1751. well, it had led me to the grave.

1752. I had no hope that you would own a rebel to your will.

1753. And if you had loved me first,

1754. I would refuse you still.

  1755. Hallelujah.

  1756. Hallelujah.

1757. I have loved you still.

  1758. Hallelujah.

  1759. Hallelujah.

  1760. Hallelujah.

  1761. Hallelujah.

  1762. Hallelujah.

  1763. Hallelujah.

  1764. Hallelujah.

  1765. Hallelujah.

  1766. Hallelujah.

  1767. Hallelujah.

  1768. Hallelujah.

  1769. Hallelujah.

  1770. Hallelujah.

  1771. Hallelujah.

  1772. Hallelujah.

  1773. Hallelujah.

  1774. Hallelujah.

  1775. Hallelujah.

  1776. Hallelujah.

  1777. Hallelujah.

  1778. Hallelujah.

  1779. Hallelujah.

  1780. Hallelujah.

  1781. Hallelujah.

  1782. Hallelujah.

  1783. Hallelujah.

  1784. Hallelujah.

  1785. Hallelujah.

  1786. Hallelujah.

  1787. Hallelujah.

  1788. Hallelujah.
