  1. Thank you, Johnny, and good afternoon, everybody.

  2. If you could open your Bibles, please, to Colossians chapter 3, and starting at verse 12.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  3. If you're using the Red Church Bible, that's on page 1184, Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  4. And before we start, let's just pray and commit this time to God.

  5. Father, we believe that your word is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword.

  6. Let it cut through into our hearts right now, and let it expose the sin in our lives.

  7. That sin which takes away our joy in you, and prevents us from becoming who we truly are in Christ.

  8. It's in his name that we ask this. Amen.

  9. Well, let's read from verse 12.

  10. Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved,

  11. clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

  12. Bear with each other, and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone.

  13. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

  14. And over all these virtues, put on love,

  15. which binds them all together in perfect unity.

  16. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,

  17. since as members of one body,

  18. you are called to peace,

  19. and be thankful.

  20. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly,

  21. as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom,

  22. through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit,

  23. singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

  24. And whatever you do,

  25. whether in word or deed,

  26. do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus,

  27. giving thanks to God the Father through him.

  28. Does that sound impossible to you?

  29. Do you feel that there's just no chance you could be that person,

  30. even just for five minutes of your day,

  31. let alone 24-7?

  32. I do.

  33. Maybe you think,

  34. well, I could be that person,

  35. only problem is this.

  36. All the pressures that I experience in my life,

  37. the exhaustion of work and family,

  38. the health problems that I face,

  39. I just, I can't live this life.

  40. Well, I want to encourage you.

  41. Number one,

  42. it's normal Christian experience to feel this way.

  43. And number two,

  44. you actually can become,

  45. in increasing measure,

  46. that person that you truly are in Christ.

  47. How can we?

  48. And what will it look like?

  49. Well, we're going to find out in our passage today.

  50. In fact, in Colossians chapter 3,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  51. the Apostle Paul is writing to ordinary Christians,

  52. like you and me.

  53. Christians who've been given new life in Christ.

  54. And he wants to remind them something really important about their old life.

  55. Look back at verse 3,

  56. in chapter 3.

  57. He says,

  58. for you died,

  59. and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

  60. When Christ, who is your life,

  61. appears,

  62. then you also will appear with him in glory.

  63. So,

  64. that life that you used to live,

  65. before you trusted in Christ,

  66. it's gone.

  67. It's dead.

  68. You've been given a new life.

  69. Christ's life is now your life.

  70. That's your unchanging status.

  71. You can't lose that.

  72. That's your new self.

  73. And that's brilliant.

  74. I mean, we can all get behind that.

  75. But here's your big problem.

  76. And mine also.

  77. We keep falling back

  78. into the sinful practices

  79. of our old life before Christ.

  80. We don't live like we've been made new.

  81. We continue to sin and fail.

  82. In and of ourselves,

  83. we don't have the power

  84. to live the new life

  85. that Christ commands us to live.

  86. How do we account for this paradox?

  87. We've been made new,

  88. but we don't live like we're new.

  89. Well, look down at verse 9.

  90. This is really important.

  91. Paul says,

  92. Do not lie to each other,

  93. since you have taken off

  94. your old self

  95. with its practices

  96. and have put on the new self,

  97. which is being renewed

  98. in knowledge,

  99. in the image of its creator.

  100. So, on the one hand,

  101. we have an unchanging status

  102. in Christ.

  103. We are safe

  104. and secure in him.

  105. On the other hand,

  106. we're not yet made perfect.

  107. We have entered

  108. into this gradual process

  109. of being made like Christ.

  110. And that accounts

  111. for why we continue

  112. to struggle with sin.

  113. We are still becoming

  114. who we truly are.

  115. Thank God that the sin

  116. that we continue to struggle with

  117. does not change our status

  118. of being united with Christ.

  119. Yet,

  120. in this passage today,

  121. God commands us

  122. to become

  123. our true souls,

  124. to become

  125. more and more

  126. like Christ.

  127. And it's a command,

  128. my brothers and sisters,

  129. that we must strive

  130. to obey.

  131. And also a command,

  132. we lack the power

  133. to obey.

  134. So before we learn

  135. what the new life

  136. looks like,

  137. and Paul has

  138. three different marks

  139. of the new self of Christ,

  140. which we're going to look at

  141. in a moment,

  142. Paul must first tell us

  143. where to find the power

  144. to become

  145. who

  146. we truly are.

  147. so he starts by telling us four staggering identifiers for anyone who has new life in christ

  148. first one is in verse 12 have a look down there it says we are god's chosen people

  149. you are chosen by god

  150. he chose us before we ever chose him and if that sounds strange to you look back one chapter

  151. to colossians 2 verse 13 colossians 2 verse 13 when you were dead in your sins and in the

    Colossians 2:13 Colossians 2:13

  152. uncircumcision of your flesh god made you alive with christ a dead person can't do anything for

  153. themselves let alone place their faith in someone clearly god chose us he chose us to be made alive

  154. with him before we were ever able to choose him that's a mystery i don't quite understand that

  155. yet but it's what god's word says

  156. and it should stagger us and humble us to think that when we didn't deserve his mercy or his grace

  157. god chose us to receive it wow what a deep security that brings not about me holding on to god

  158. he chose me here's a second identifier

  159. we are set apart for him in verse 12 not only are we chosen god chose us to be holy or set apart for him

  160. his treasured possession and that gives us amazing purpose doesn't it we're not living for ourselves

  161. we are living for the king who has rescued us and that in turn leads to our third reality

  162. we are dearly loved by him now if we've been chosen by him and set apart for him

  163. how much more proof do we need to know that we are so dearly loved by him precious sons and daughters

  164. of the king of the universe there is one more identifier though and it's actually found

  165. in our passage in verse

  166. 15

  167. we are members of the body of christ

  168. you have a new family

  169. and this is the church all over the world and right here in our local church we are united together

  170. in christ you're part of the family

  171. your identity is inextricably linked with the brothers and sisters sitting around you right now

  172. we are united together in christ both now and into eternity how amazing is that

  173. so that's who you are

  174. you are chosen set apart loved in the family

  175. and when you think about it isn't that what everyone in this world longs for

  176. to be chosen loved treasured

  177. to be part of a family forever we have it all here in christ don't we

  178. these four identifiers here they are the rock solid foundation for your life

  179. in christ your new life in him

  180. so do you feel them do you know them

  181. because only once you know who you truly are can you start to live out your true identity

  182. and paul also very importantly now tells us the power source

  183. for becoming who we truly are

  184. and that power source is simply christ in us i mean if you remember back to

  185. verse four there we read it at the start

  186. when christ who is your life appears then you also will appear with him

  187. the power source is his life in us now think about it christ is the only person who can

  188. really live the life that we've read about in our passage today

  189. because we participate in christ's life his spirit is alive inside of us and so that means we have all we

  190. need to live this new life christ is empowering us to become like him and i have to warn you

  191. if you don't understand that you're going to be crushed under the weight of the commands coming up in this passage

  192. because you might wrongly think that you must garner some inner strength from somewhere inside of you to live this new life in christ

  193. or you might think oh well it's half my strength half god's no

  194. we can only become who we truly are in christ in the power of christ working through our efforts

  195. so with that firmly in mind let's now look at three marks of that new self

  196. which paul describes

  197. we are to

  198. put on our new clothes of love

  199. submit to the rule of christ

  200. and do everything in the name of jesus firstly

  201. put on

  202. the clothes of love

  203. look in verse 12 it says therefore as god's chosen people

  204. holy and dearly loved

  205. clothe yourselves

  206. with compassion

  207. kindness

  208. humility

  209. gentleness

  210. and patience

  211. clothe yourselves in compassionate hearts

  212. now

  213. i don't know about you but does that not strike you as impossible

  214. i mean

  215. how do you put on

  216. a compassionate heart

  217. if you were to ask me to put on a smile

  218. even when i'm really not feeling like it

  219. i can put on a smile i can fake it right

  220. how on earth am i supposed to put on a feeling

  221. a compassionate heart to be touched by my brother or sister's pain where i just simply am not feeling it

  222. well the only answer is it's a miracle of christ

  223. it's got to be his power

  224. in us

  225. changing us giving us new hearts

  226. and what is the result of that new heart of compassion well

  227. i think acts of kindness naturally flow out of that

  228. kindness towards our brothers and sisters in the body

  229. he goes on in verse 12 clothe yourselves in humility

  230. now i think this is another big heart issue

  231. do we look down on other members of the body

  232. and think in some ways we are better than others

  233. or do you elevate your brothers and sisters above you

  234. in serving their needs first

  235. treating them better than they even deserve at times

  236. that's humility

  237. and then what flows out of that humble heart that god gives us

  238. it's the next thing on paul's list isn't it

  239. gentleness

  240. gentleness towards all not a judgmental or harsh demeanor

  241. but gentleness towards our brothers and sisters

  242. next paul tells us to put on the garments of patience

  243. to be long suffering with one another

  244. and there's a reason why we need to do this

  245. just nobody in this room has been made perfect yet we are

  246. a beautiful but a messy church

  247. so paul calls you to something radical

  248. in verse 13 read it with me

  249. bear with each other and forgive one another

  250. if any of you has a grievance against someone

  251. forgive as the lord forgave you

  252. to bear with our brothers and sisters in their sin

  253. and their mess is to help them on their journey to becoming their true selves in christ

  254. we pass over

  255. all the different wrongs that might be done to us

  256. we don't bring every one of those up

  257. we know that we do need to confront our brothers and sisters at times with their sin

  258. and yet we also pass over

  259. and knowing that there will be times when we

  260. will hurt each other either unintentionally or not

  261. and we must forgive

  262. as christ has forgiven us

  263. and then in 14

  264. let's read it

  265. and over all these virtues

  266. put on love which binds them all together in perfect unity

  267. basically become a loving person in the church

  268. filled with not just any love

  269. christ's love

  270. because christ is your life

  271. you can love like he does

  272. in increasing measure

  273. as you depend on him

  274. so i want to encourage you

  275. if you are in christ today

  276. you have all these clothes of love

  277. in your spiritual wardrobes

  278. in the power of the spirit of christ

  279. keep putting them on

  280. moment by moment

  281. and become

  282. who you truly are in christ

  283. second mark of the new self in christ

  284. is that we

  285. submit to the rule of christ

  286. now we read back in verse one of this chapter that christ is seated at the right

  287. hand of god in the place of authority

  288. and we as a church family

  289. we're to submit

  290. to his loving rule over us

  291. specifically here

  292. christ's peace

  293. and his word

  294. look at what paul says in verse 15

  295. let the peace of christ

  296. rule in your hearts

  297. since as members of one body

  298. you were called

  299. to peace

  300. we're called to submit

  301. to christ's peace

  302. what a wonderful thing to submit to

  303. but sometimes the last thing

  304. our selfish hearts

  305. wants to submit to

  306. how often in the church do we

  307. disagree over

  308. petty things that don't really matter

  309. we grumble and complain about so and so doing this or that

  310. and sometimes

  311. it's not even a primary issue

  312. maybe it's the length of the sermon

  313. what that kid did

  314. which songs were chosen

  315. what way the chairs were set out

  316. all such grumbling

  317. and complaining is not in submission to the peace of christ

  318. christ's

  319. so if we do see something in the church that's

  320. not in a line with god's word

  321. let's go

  322. with the clothes of love

  323. on us and address it

  324. but always with the intention to promote peace in the church

  325. not division

  326. let's not come in all guns blazing

  327. but instead clothe ourselves in compassion

  328. kindness

  329. patience

  330. gentleness

  331. speaking the truth in love

  332. of course we're going to disagree

  333. that's part of

  334. life together as a family

  335. but we can do so peaceably

  336. in the power of christ

  337. one other thing we're supposed to submit to

  338. in verse 16 we're supposed to submit to the word of christ

  339. let's read there

  340. let the message of christ dwell among you richly

  341. as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom

  342. through psalms hymns and songs from the spirit

  343. you know

  344. it's not my word

  345. or your word

  346. actually that's the authority

  347. it's christ's word isn't it

  348. it's

  349. we are to let it dwell

  350. richly among us

  351. don't you love that language

  352. to dwell richly

  353. and what does that look like well

  354. no matter what you feel your main gifting might be

  355. in the church body

  356. here we are all

  357. instructed to teach each other

  358. to do what the word says

  359. and we are all instructed to

  360. admonish or warn one another when someone is not doing what the word says

  361. this should actually be a normal part of our lives together as a family believers

  362. now if you're the one teaching or admonishing

  363. you better come clothed

  364. in love

  365. and humility

  366. and gentleness before you even think about approaching your brother or sister

  367. and likewise

  368. on the flip side

  369. when you're the one being taught

  370. if someone comes to you sharing god's word with you

  371. admonishing you

  372. you also need to be clothed with humility and love

  373. willing to listen

  374. being thankful for your brother or sister who cared enough

  375. to bring god's word

  376. his healing word

  377. to you

  378. yet i think it's clear and you probably noticed this that the context which paul is mainly thinking of

  379. in this passage

  380. is teaching and admonishing one another through our singing

  381. now

  382. that's an interesting one isn't it

  383. because oftentimes we're not mindful

  384. of this main purpose of singing in our gathering

  385. our purpose when we sing is not simply

  386. vertical

  387. singing praise to god although that is a primary purpose for sure

  388. what a joy to sing praise to him but we're also singing horizontally to each other

  389. some sunday mornings i walk in here

  390. and i'm struggling to believe the promises

  391. i'm disappointed i'm weary

  392. on those days

  393. you my brothers and sisters are teaching and admonishing me

  394. by singing the word over me

  395. whether you're young or old you're singing

  396. when i just look around and see you singing

  397. that encourages me that the promises are true

  398. to keep going in the faith

  399. so sing out

  400. and teach and admonish your brothers and sisters around you and let the word of christ dwell richly

  401. among us

  402. become who you truly are in christ

  403. and submit to that peace of christ and the word of christ

  404. lastly

  405. and briefly as part of our new life in christ

  406. we do everything in the name of jesus

  407. read verse 17 with me

  408. and whatever you do

  409. whether in word or deed

  410. do it all in the name of the lord jesus giving thanks

  411. thanks to god the father through him

  412. in becoming who we truly are in christ

  413. our old motivations

  414. our old motivations

  415. often selfish

  416. are replaced with new ones

  417. we don't live to satisfy our own selfish desires anymore

  418. no matter what we accumulate

  419. it's never enough anyway

  420. and we don't live to please people anymore either because

  421. we can never measure up to their standards no matter how hard or how long we tried

  422. instead we do everything in the name of jesus

  423. whether that's doing jobs around the house

  424. sitting around the dinner table with your family

  425. setting down chairs at church

  426. going to work on a monday morning

  427. scrolling through your phone in the evening

  428. no exceptions

  429. every action

  430. every word

  431. do it

  432. do it in the name of jesus

  433. i think that means three things

  434. a

  435. representing him

  436. when people see you

  437. they should see something different about how you speak and act

  438. do they see kindness

  439. compassion

  440. the humility of jesus

  441. you're representing him

  442. when you're doing it all in his name

  443. secondly i think this

  444. could imply that we are also empowered by him

  445. if we're doing it in jesus name that means

  446. we are depending in everything we do

  447. on christ's power to enable us to do it

  448. not on our own strength

  449. and thirdly

  450. i think to do everything in the name of jesus means

  451. to simply do it for him

  452. we make it our aim

  453. to please him

  454. and i think that changes

  455. the way we do the things that we do right

  456. if you're doing those mundane jobs around the house

  457. do it for christ

  458. to serve him

  459. and your family

  460. if you're watching tv

  461. think carefully about what you consume

  462. is it pleasing to christ

  463. is it good for your heart

  464. if you're going to work on a monday morning

  465. don't do a half job on it

  466. give it your very best

  467. do it for christ

  468. do it for christ

  469. aim to please him

  470. and let your boss see your good deeds

  471. if you're setting up chairs and you think

  472. do you know what nobody ever thanks me for doing this job

  473. do it for christ

  474. do it for christ

  475. do it for christ

  476. do it for christ

  477. do it for christ

  478. do it for christ

  479. do it for christ

  480. do everything in the name of the lord jesus

  481. giving thanks

  482. to god the father through him yes

  483. giving thanks in everything

  484. paul fits in one more beautiful item of clothing into this passage

  485. the garment of thankfulness

  486. what a difference it makes to put on

  487. the clothes of thankfulness

  488. in place of mumbling

  489. and complaining

  490. so become who you truly are in christ

  491. and do everything in the name of jesus

  492. giving thanks to god the father through him

  493. to finish

  494. i'm not sure

  495. what challenges you the most from this passage today

  496. but for me

  497. there are some days i'm tired

  498. disappointed

  499. feeling weak

  500. and i actually just give up on those days living the new life in christ

  501. i don't know if you can relate

  502. i just pull on those old clothes of

  503. selfishness

  504. harshness and speech

  505. being a big old grump really

  506. do you have days like that

  507. well this is what got me this week

  508. the amazing news of this passage is that at every moment in your life

  509. you actually have the power to live your new life in christ

  510. because you are always in christ

  511. you can always become more like christ

  512. isn't that just transformative

  513. it's not some special strength you must drum up from inside yourself

  514. it's christ's power

  515. already dwelling inside of you

  516. his spirit

  517. so it's possible

  518. to put on your new clothes of love even when you're tired

  519. disappointed

  520. and suffering

  521. you can

  522. you can submit to that new authority of christ's peace and his word

  523. and you actually are able

  524. to leave your old motivations behind and do everything for jesus

  550. which brings together some of these themes we've been talking about

  551. it

  552. it's called there is one gospel and

  553. in the third verse there's something that really struck me from this

  554. it says

  555. now on my savior i fix my eyes

  556. my life is his

  557. and his hope is mine

  558. for he has promised i too will rise

  559. i stand in the gospel of jesus christ

  560. are you standing in that gospel today

  561. are you fixing your eyes on your savior

  562. using this song i encourage you to do that

  563. to place your hope and your trust in him again

  564. let's all stand and sing if you're able thank you

  565. do

  566. do

  567. do

  568. Thank you.
