  1. We'll read Colossians chapter 3 and we're going to start at verse 17 and finish at chapter 4, verse 1.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  2. Colossians chapter 3, starting in verse 17.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  3. Let's hear God's word, his voice to us today.

  4. Colossians 3, 17.

  5. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

  6. Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands as is fitting in the Lord.

  7. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

  8. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

  9. Parents, do not embitter your children or they will become discouraged.

  10. Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything.

  11. And do it not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favour, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.

  12. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for human masters.

  13. Since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward, it is the Lord Christ you are serving.

  14. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs.

  15. And there is no favouritism.

  16. Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair.

  17. Because you know that you also have a master in heaven.

  18. Well, what a reading.

  19. It might cause us some offence, but there is good truth there.

  20. Let's pray and ask for God's help to us.

  21. Father, we thank you for all of your word.

  22. For all that has been written down and recorded for us, for our lives today.

  23. Thank you that it is true and trustworthy.

  24. That your word is sufficient to make us wise for salvation.

  25. And also to train us and to build us up in our Christian life.

  26. And so we pray that we would humbly sit under your word today.

  27. And allow your truth to shape us and to mould us.

  28. And to lead us as a people who follow you and honour you.

  29. Thank you for your help.

  30. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  31. So who's your boss?

  32. Who is it that tells you what you should do and how you should live?

  33. Well, the answer is easy.

  34. No one tells me what to do.

  35. It's my life.

  36. And I'm going to live as I want.

  37. We govern our life with a self-rule.

  38. Thank you.

  39. We govern our life with a self-rule.

  40. Nobody's going to tell me what to do.

  41. Well, that might be the case in our thinking.

  42. But if you're a Christian, there's a very different view to take.

  43. You see, by trusting in Jesus, not only have we received a new life,

  44. something we've seen in chapter 3,

  45. it also means that we have a new ruler.

  46. Go back with me to chapter 2, verse 6.

  47. Chapter 2, verse 6.

  48. This is a key summary of the whole book.

  49. So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord.

  50. You received Christ Jesus as Lord.

  51. Lord is a title.

  52. And it means the one with supreme rule and absolute authority.

  53. And to get a glimpse of the rule and authority of Jesus,

  54. just take a look back further at chapter 1, verse 16.

  55. For in him, in Jesus, all things were created.

  56. Well, what does that mean?

  57. Well, things in heaven and on earth,

  58. the things we can see and the things we can't see,

  59. whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities,

  60. all things have been created through him and for him.

  61. He is before all things and in him,

  62. all things hold together.

  63. So you can see he is Lord over everyone and everything.

  64. And so when we receive Jesus Christ,

  65. we are not just trusting him as our rescuer,

  66. we are bowing down to him as our ruler.

  67. We now live our lives under the authority of the creator God.

  68. So, chapter 3, verse 17.

  69. Whatever you do,

  70. whether in word or in deed,

  71. the words we speak or the actions we take,

  72. do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  73. In other words,

  74. live your whole life under the Lordship of Jesus.

  75. Not only have we received a new life,

  76. we are now committed to a new ruler.

  77. So we're going to look at three areas of life

  78. that shows us what it means to live under the Lordship of Jesus.

  79. We're going to look at marriage,

  80. family and work.

  81. And I trust that for each one of us here,

  82. whatever situations we find ourselves in,

  83. that we will see ourselves as in either marriage

  84. or family or work

  85. or generally in our relationships with one another.

  86. So I'm going to grab a drink first

  87. and we'll continue.

  88. So first,

  89. a marriage that is fitting with the Lord.

  90. A marriage that is fitting in the Lord.

  91. Verse 18.

  92. Wives,

  93. submit yourself to your husbands.

  94. Well, that's harsh, isn't it?

  95. Wives,

  96. submit.

  97. Johnny,

  98. don't you know you can't say those things anymore?

  99. Those days are long past.

  100. Didn't you know that women have equal rights?

  101. Wives,

  102. submit?

  103. I mean,

  104. it's terribly outdated and offensive,

  105. isn't it?

  106. It seems nobody is bothered

  107. to update the Bible.

  108. But my question is,

  109. does it need to be updated?

  110. You see,

  111. despite what many people think,

  112. and I'm sure if you were to have conversations

  113. with your friends,

  114. the scriptures actually have a very high view

  115. of women.

  116. Women are equally loved,

  117. treasured,

  118. and cared for by God.

  119. Equally made in the image of God.

  120. So for us to understand what it means

  121. for wives to submit to their husbands,

  122. I think we first need to take a step back

  123. and look at what God commands

  124. the husband to do.

  125. So what does it say in verse 19?

  126. Husbands,

  127. any husbands here?

  128. Husbands,

  129. love your wives

  130. and do not be harsh

  131. with them.

  132. Husbands,

  133. love your wife.

  134. And that means more than flowers

  135. or the odd cup of tea,

  136. and maybe for some of us

  137. it would be a good place to start.

  138. To love your wife

  139. means to lay down your life

  140. for your wife.

  141. It's a life of sacrifice

  142. and service.

  143. In the letter to the Ephesians,

  144. in a similar passage,

  145. it says the same thing

  146. with an addition.

  147. It says,

  148. Husbands,

  149. love your wives

  150. just as Christ

  151. loved the church

  152. and gave himself up

  153. for the church.

  154. So how did Christ

  155. love the church?

  156. Well,

  157. he gave up his life.

  158. He died for the church.

  159. So,

  160. husbands,

  161. we need to learn

  162. to die to our wants

  163. and desires

  164. so that the needs

  165. and cares of our wives

  166. come first.

  167. The focus here

  168. is not

  169. lead your wife

  170. or to decide

  171. for your wife.

  172. They're well capable

  173. of making decisions

  174. for themselves.

  175. Or demand

  176. from your wife.

  177. The focus is

  178. love.

  179. your wife.

  180. And not only

  181. love your wife,

  182. but do not be

  183. harsh

  184. with your wife.

  185. Remember the clothes

  186. we're to wear,

  187. not the physical clothes

  188. we have on today,

  189. but have a look back

  190. at chapter 3,

  191. verse 12.

  192. Therefore,

  193. as God's chosen people,

  194. holy and dearly loved,

  195. clothe yourselves

  196. with compassion,

  197. kindness,

  198. humility,

  199. gentleness,

  200. and patience.

  201. Now,

  202. I don't think

  203. there's any wife

  204. here who would

  205. complain

  206. or would complain

  207. about a husband

  208. who is compassionate,

  209. kind,

  210. humble,

  211. gentle,

  212. and patient.

  213. Any wives

  214. want to complain

  215. about that?

  216. In other words,

  217. put to death,

  218. husbands,

  219. are harsh words

  220. and are put-downs.

  221. be careful

  222. with how you speak.

  223. So,

  224. let's go back

  225. to the command

  226. to wives,

  227. verse 18.

  228. Wives,

  229. submit yourselves

  230. to your husbands.

  231. You see,

  232. submission doesn't mean

  233. oppression.

  234. It's not something

  235. forcefully demanded

  236. by the husband.

  237. It is voluntarily

  238. given

  239. by the wife.

  240. In fact,

  241. far from demeaning,

  242. it's coming

  243. under the loving

  244. and protective

  245. care

  246. of your husband.

  247. It's a deliberate

  248. and intentional

  249. decision

  250. to place yourself

  251. in the hands

  252. of one

  253. who's going

  254. to nurture you

  255. spiritually

  256. and encourage

  257. you practically

  258. so that you

  259. flourish

  260. and become

  261. all that God

  262. intends

  263. for you.

  264. now,

  265. I have to add

  266. that if you

  267. are in

  268. a relationship,

  269. a marriage

  270. relationship,

  271. where your

  272. husband

  273. is not

  274. treating you

  275. the way

  276. you ought

  277. to be treated,

  278. or maybe

  279. there is

  280. some form

  281. or some

  282. kind of

  283. abuse

  284. or difficulty,

  285. well then,

  286. we have to be

  287. very careful

  288. about that

  289. and I encourage

  290. you

  291. to speak,

  292. come and speak

  293. to me,

  294. speak to

  295. Kirsty,

  296. come and say

  297. if there's a

  298. struggle in your

  299. marriage today,

  300. there is help

  301. and there is

  302. support.

  303. support.

  304. Now,

  305. the reason

  306. we are to

  307. live like

  308. this as

  309. wives and

  310. husbands

  311. is because

  312. look at

  313. verse 18,

  314. the end of

  315. verse 18,

  316. it is

  317. fitting

  318. in the

  319. Lord.

  320. We can

  321. say exactly

  322. the same

  323. for husbands,

  324. husbands love

  325. your wives,

  326. don't be

  327. harsh with

  328. them,

  329. as is

  330. fitting

  331. in the

  332. Lord.

  333. In other

  334. words,

  335. marriage

  336. is a

  337. picture of

  338. living under

  339. the Lordship

  340. of Jesus.

  341. They are

  342. living in a

  343. way that

  344. fits

  345. with God's

  346. design.

  347. They are

  348. lining up

  349. their lives

  350. under the

  351. Lordship of

  352. Jesus and

  353. following God's

  354. plan for a

  355. wife and a

  356. husband.

  357. You see,

  358. as the

  359. husband puts

  360. himself under

  361. his wife

  362. to serve

  363. her,

  364. and as

  365. the wife

  366. places

  367. herself under

  368. her husband

  369. to support

  370. him,

  371. so together

  372. husband and

  373. wife are

  374. placing

  375. themselves

  376. under the

  377. authority and

  378. Lordship of

  379. Jesus.

  380. You see,

  381. living under

  382. his rule and

  383. authority is

  384. not harmful

  385. or demeaning.

  386. It's good.

  387. it's the

  388. context in

  389. which we

  390. become the

  391. people God

  392. calls us

  393. to be.

  394. So first,

  395. husbands and

  396. wives,

  397. live your

  398. marriage under

  399. the Lordship

  400. of Jesus.

  401. Second, we

  402. want to think

  403. about family.

  404. a family that

  405. is pleasing

  406. to the

  407. Lord.

  408. Verse 20,

  409. children.

  410. Any children

  411. here?

  412. Wakey,

  413. wakey.

  414. Children,

  415. obey your

  416. parents in

  417. everything.

  418. Well, my

  419. goodness,

  420. Johnny, you

  421. really don't

  422. know much,

  423. do you?

  424. You can't

  425. tell children

  426. to obey.

  427. That's not

  428. the way

  429. things are

  430. done.

  431. You ask

  432. your children,

  433. what would

  434. you want?

  435. And you

  436. let them

  437. decide because

  438. they know

  439. what's best.

  440. Obey your

  441. parents,

  442. that's awfully

  443. damaging.

  444. Well,

  445. maybe not.

  446. You see,

  447. children are

  448. a good gift

  449. from God,

  450. given and

  451. entrusted to

  452. their parents'

  453. care,

  454. where they

  455. are nurtured

  456. and cared

  457. for.

  458. So,

  459. obedience to

  460. your parents

  461. is something

  462. that will

  463. lead to

  464. your

  465. well-being.

  466. And of

  467. course,

  468. for us to

  469. understand why

  470. a child should

  471. ever obey,

  472. we need to

  473. look at what

  474. is expected

  475. of a parent.

  476. So,

  477. parents who

  478. are sitting

  479. there all

  480. smugly,

  481. let's

  482. listen up.

  483. Verse 21.

  484. Fathers,

  485. or it can

  486. be translated

  487. as parents,

  488. do not

  489. embitter

  490. your children

  491. or they

  492. will become

  493. discouraged.

  494. Stop it.

  495. Don't do

  496. that.

  497. I told

  498. you.

  499. Get out

  500. of the way.

  501. Tidy

  502. that up.

  503. Behave.

  504. my goodness,

  505. those words

  506. ringing in

  507. my head.

  508. If that's

  509. all your

  510. children

  511. hear,

  512. then you

  513. will

  514. embitter

  515. them.

  516. They will

  517. become,

  518. verse 21,

  519. discouraged.

  520. such harsh

  521. demands on

  522. your child

  523. will only

  524. provoke

  525. them

  526. and it

  527. will cause

  528. them to

  529. lose heart.

  530. They will

  531. either turn

  532. against you

  533. and fight

  534. you

  535. or you

  536. will overcome

  537. them and

  538. you will

  539. crush them.

  540. Either way,

  541. whether it's

  542. a fight

  543. or a

  544. crushing,

  545. it's going

  546. to end

  547. in tears

  548. and

  549. brokenness.

  550. You see,

  551. obedience,

  552. parents,

  553. is not

  554. something we

  555. force by

  556. our strength

  557. or that

  558. we motivate

  559. by fear.

  560. No,

  561. we want

  562. our children

  563. to willingly

  564. delight in

  565. obedience

  566. because they

  567. see it as

  568. right and

  569. best.

  570. And not

  571. only do

  572. we

  573. embitter,

  574. we're not

  575. to

  576. embitter

  577. rather,

  578. instead we

  579. are to

  580. train our

  581. children.

  582. It's not

  583. stated here

  584. in verse

  585. 21,

  586. but again

  587. in the

  588. similar

  589. passage that

  590. we have

  591. in Ephesians,

  592. it says

  593. almost the

  594. same starting

  595. out,

  596. parents do

  597. not

  598. exasperate

  599. your children,

  600. do not

  601. embitter

  602. them,

  603. instead

  604. bring them

  605. up in

  606. the training

  607. and instruction

  608. of the

  609. Lord.

  610. So

  611. parents,

  612. our

  613. primary

  614. responsibility

  615. is to

  616. train

  617. our

  618. children

  619. to

  620. know

  621. and

  622. love

  623. God.

  624. And I

  625. want to

  626. share with

  627. you three

  628. ways we

  629. can do

  630. this.

  631. This is

  632. adapted from

  633. a talk

  634. that I

  635. listened to

  636. recently from

  637. Bruce Ware.

  638. Here's

  639. three things.

  640. First,

  641. first,

  642. I don't

  643. think I've

  644. got it

  645. there,

  646. have I?

  647. Hang on.

  648. No, I

  649. don't.

  650. Listen up.

  651. Here's the

  652. first one.

  653. Head.

  654. Head.

  655. Teach

  656. the truth

  657. of God's

  658. Word.

  659. Parents,

  660. let's get

  661. alongside

  662. our sons

  663. and our

  664. daughters

  665. and show

  666. them how

  667. to read

  668. God's Word

  669. and teach

  670. them to

  671. pray.

  672. Don't just

  673. shove a

  674. Bible in

  675. front of

  676. and say,

  677. oh, have

  678. you done

  679. your Bible

  680. reading

  681. tonight?

  682. No, get

  683. alongside

  684. them.

  685. Read it

  686. with them.

  687. Help them

  688. to understand

  689. how you

  690. read and

  691. how you

  692. teach and

  693. how you

  694. pray.

  695. Teach

  696. them the

  697. truth of

  698. God's

  699. Word.

  700. Second

  701. one,

  702. heart.

  703. Embrace

  704. the truth

  705. of God's

  706. Word.

  707. In other

  708. words, we

  709. want them

  710. to embrace

  711. Christ for

  712. themselves.

  713. We need

  714. to show

  715. them that

  716. our children

  717. need a

  718. Saviour and

  719. we're not

  720. their Saviour.

  721. We need

  722. to encourage

  723. our children

  724. to place

  725. their faith

  726. in Jesus.

  727. Let them

  728. hear you

  729. as you

  730. sit with

  731. them and

  732. as you

  733. read the

  734. Bible with

  735. them.

  736. Let them

  737. hear from

  738. your words

  739. your prayer

  740. for their

  741. very

  742. salvation.

  743. Let them

  744. hear them

  745. cry out

  746. to God

  747. that God

  748. would save

  749. them.

  750. Teach them

  751. to embrace

  752. the truth

  753. of God's

  754. Word.

  755. So head,

  756. heart,

  757. hands,

  758. live the

  759. truth of

  760. God's

  761. Word.

  762. Let them

  763. see in

  764. your life

  765. as they

  766. watch you

  767. what it

  768. is like

  769. to live

  770. the Christian

  771. life.

  772. Your

  773. attitudes

  774. towards

  775. other

  776. people.

  777. How you

  778. serve in

  779. the life

  780. of the

  781. church.

  782. Head,

  783. teach them

  784. the truth.

  785. Heart,

  786. show them

  787. how they

  788. can embrace

  789. the truth.

  790. Hands,

  791. live the

  792. truth.

  793. Parents,

  794. children

  795. are a

  796. gift.

  797. They're

  798. not

  799. yours.

  800. God

  801. has given

  802. you a

  803. gift and

  804. he's

  805. entrusted

  806. them into

  807. your care

  808. for a

  809. time and

  810. for a

  811. season.

  812. And the

  813. best thing

  814. that you

  815. can ever

  816. do for

  817. your

  818. children is

  819. to train

  820. them to

  821. know,

  822. trust,

  823. and serve

  824. God.

  825. That they

  826. would love

  827. the Lord.

  828. Now I

  829. get it

  830. parents,

  831. there's lots

  832. of pressures

  833. that we

  834. want our

  835. children to

  836. be the

  837. best sports

  838. people

  839. possible.

  840. and we

  841. will drive

  842. them and

  843. ship them

  844. to here,

  845. there and

  846. everywhere so

  847. that they

  848. can play.

  849. We want

  850. our children

  851. to be the

  852. best musicians,

  853. the best

  854. dancers,

  855. the best in

  856. their class,

  857. and we

  858. will do

  859. everything

  860. possible to

  861. make sure

  862. that they

  863. get the

  864. best education,

  865. the best

  866. opportunities.

  867. Oh,

  868. it's all

  869. so important.

  870. but do

  871. we in

  872. doing all

  873. of that

  874. neglect our

  875. primary

  876. responsibility?

  877. Are we

  878. sitting with

  879. our children,

  880. no matter

  881. what age

  882. they are,

  883. showing them

  884. what it is

  885. to know,

  886. trust,

  887. and serve

  888. God?

  889. It's an

  890. eternal matter,

  891. parents,

  892. an eternal

  893. matter.

  894. So,

  895. back to

  896. children.

  897. Verse 20.

  898. Children,

  899. obey your

  900. parents in

  901. everything.

  902. Obedience

  903. to your

  904. parents is

  905. not harmful

  906. or restrictive.

  907. It's good

  908. for you.

  909. By obeying

  910. your parents,

  911. you're accepting

  912. that all that

  913. they are teaching

  914. will be for

  915. your very good.

  916. Of course,

  917. it doesn't

  918. mean you

  919. become their

  920. personal

  921. servants.

  922. Get me

  923. a cup

  924. of tea,

  925. pass me

  926. the TV

  927. controls.

  928. No.

  929. It means

  930. that as we

  931. obey,

  932. we become

  933. the people

  934. God intends

  935. us to be.

  936. And the

  937. reason we

  938. do this,

  939. children,

  940. the reason

  941. we obey

  942. is,

  943. verse 20,

  944. because it is

  945. pleasing to

  946. the Lord.

  947. God's

  948. your creator

  949. and designer.

  950. God

  951. made

  952. families.

  953. They're his

  954. idea,

  955. his plan

  956. and his

  957. purpose.

  958. And so

  959. when we

  960. follow the

  961. creator's

  962. design,

  963. it pleases

  964. the Lord.

  965. And as we

  966. obey our

  967. parents,

  968. we are

  969. displaying to

  970. the world

  971. that God's

  972. way is

  973. the best

  974. way.

  975. You see,

  976. living under

  977. the rule

  978. and authority

  979. of Jesus

  980. is not

  981. harmful

  982. or demeaning.

  983. It's good

  984. for you.

  985. And it's

  986. in this

  987. context that

  988. we become

  989. the people

  990. God calls

  991. us to be.

  992. But let

  993. me pause

  994. again,

  995. just as we

  996. mentioned

  997. about wives,

  998. children.

  999. Maybe you

  1000. find that

  1001. your parents

  1002. aren't behaving

  1003. in the way

  1004. that they

  1005. should.

  1006. And maybe

  1007. you're

  1008. struggling.

  1009. And maybe

  1010. there's

  1011. something that's

  1012. going on

  1013. that isn't

  1014. very nice.

  1015. Well,

  1016. if you're a

  1017. child here

  1018. today and

  1019. you need to

  1020. speak to

  1021. someone,

  1022. speak to

  1023. them.

  1024. Maybe to

  1025. one of your

  1026. youth leaders

  1027. or to

  1028. another adult

  1029. that you

  1030. know.

  1031. So,

  1032. second,

  1033. family life

  1034. is to be

  1035. lived under

  1036. the lordship

  1037. of Jesus.

  1038. The third

  1039. one that we

  1040. need to look

  1041. at, we've

  1042. looked at

  1043. marriage,

  1044. family,

  1045. is our

  1046. vocation,

  1047. our work,

  1048. our job,

  1049. that is

  1050. working for

  1051. the Lord.

  1052. Lord.

  1053. Let's look

  1054. at verse

  1055. 22.

  1056. Slaves,

  1057. obey your

  1058. earthly

  1059. masters in

  1060. everything.

  1061. Obey your

  1062. earthly

  1063. masters in

  1064. everything.

  1065. Well, if we

  1066. thought wives

  1067. submitting and

  1068. children obeying

  1069. was offensive,

  1070. slaves,

  1071. obey,

  1072. that's a

  1073. tough one,

  1074. isn't it?

  1075. Trinity

  1076. College in

  1077. Dublin are

  1078. in the

  1079. process of

  1080. changing their

  1081. library's name.

  1082. You may have

  1083. seen this on

  1084. the news.

  1085. Up to now

  1086. it's been

  1087. called the

  1088. Berkeley Library,

  1089. named after the

  1090. philosopher George

  1091. Berkeley from the

  1092. 1700s.

  1093. And why change

  1094. it now?

  1095. Well, because

  1096. historians have

  1097. discovered that

  1098. George Berkeley

  1099. owned slaves.

  1100. So how could you

  1101. possibly have a

  1102. library in such a

  1103. great institution

  1104. as Trinity

  1105. with someone

  1106. who owned

  1107. slaves?

  1108. So they're

  1109. changing the

  1110. name.

  1111. Now, with the

  1112. same reasoning,

  1113. some people will

  1114. say, you need

  1115. to change the

  1116. Bible.

  1117. We need to

  1118. replace it with

  1119. something modern.

  1120. Fair point, I

  1121. say.

  1122. However, when

  1123. the Bible uses

  1124. the term

  1125. slave, it

  1126. has a very

  1127. different context

  1128. to how perhaps

  1129. we might

  1130. understand it.

  1131. Let me

  1132. explain.

  1133. First, we

  1134. must differentiate

  1135. slavery in the

  1136. first century that

  1137. we're looking at in

  1138. Colossians with the

  1139. transatlantic slavery

  1140. of the 15th and

  1141. 18th century and

  1142. human trafficking

  1143. today.

  1144. It's very, very

  1145. different.

  1146. The transatlantic

  1147. slave, particularly

  1148. from Britain and

  1149. America, going to

  1150. Africa and taking

  1151. black African

  1152. slaves, was

  1153. primarily race

  1154. orientated and

  1155. involved the

  1156. buying and

  1157. selling of

  1158. people for

  1159. profit who

  1160. were afforded

  1161. no rights.

  1162. It was horrendous.

  1163. It was

  1164. disgusting.

  1165. It was, I

  1166. can't say the

  1167. word.

  1168. Second, slavery

  1169. in the first

  1170. century under

  1171. the Roman

  1172. Empire, well, it

  1173. accounted for

  1174. about one

  1175. third of the

  1176. population.

  1177. Slaves could

  1178. be a farmer,

  1179. could be a

  1180. miner, could

  1181. be a teacher,

  1182. a doctor, you

  1183. could be

  1184. somebody who

  1185. owned property

  1186. and looked

  1187. after an estate

  1188. on behalf of

  1189. somebody.

  1190. So you could

  1191. be a slave and

  1192. have a very

  1193. difficult job, or

  1194. you could be a

  1195. slave and have a

  1196. very high-profile

  1197. job.

  1198. So I think when

  1199. we take all of

  1200. that into

  1201. consideration, if

  1202. we exchange the

  1203. words, if you

  1204. look at verse

  1205. 22, exchange the

  1206. words of slave

  1207. slave and

  1208. master with

  1209. employee and

  1210. employer, then

  1211. we get a close

  1212. contemporary

  1213. equivalent.

  1214. It's not exact,

  1215. but I think it

  1216. helps us make

  1217. some applications

  1218. this morning.

  1219. So when we

  1220. think, verse

  1221. 22, slaves

  1222. think employees

  1223. obey your

  1224. earthly employer

  1225. in everything.

  1226. So what does

  1227. that look like?

  1228. I guess for

  1229. most of us here

  1230. today, we are

  1231. employees rather

  1232. than an employer.

  1233. So let's start

  1234. with employees.

  1235. Employees, obey

  1236. your boss.

  1237. You know how it

  1238. goes.

  1239. Do you see

  1240. there, verse 22?

  1241. Obey your

  1242. earthly masters in

  1243. everything, and

  1244. do it not only

  1245. when their eye is

  1246. on you, so to

  1247. curry their

  1248. favour, but

  1249. with sincerity

  1250. of heart.

  1251. You know what

  1252. it's like.

  1253. The boss is

  1254. off for the

  1255. day.

  1256. Early lunch,

  1257. guys.

  1258. You're

  1259. suffering a

  1260. late night, so

  1261. you get your

  1262. buddy to sign

  1263. in for you.

  1264. There's an

  1265. event you want

  1266. to go to, so

  1267. you pull a

  1268. sickie.

  1269. Of course, if

  1270. there's a chance

  1271. for promotion,

  1272. promotion, or

  1273. a move to

  1274. another department,

  1275. well, we never

  1276. look busier, and

  1277. we make sure

  1278. that he or she

  1279. is watching us

  1280. in all that we

  1281. do.

  1282. No, living

  1283. under the

  1284. lordship of

  1285. Jesus, we

  1286. are to work

  1287. as if Jesus

  1288. was our

  1289. employer.

  1290. Do you see

  1291. what it says

  1292. at the end of

  1293. verse 22?

  1294. We're to do

  1295. our work with

  1296. sincerity of

  1297. heart and

  1298. reverence for

  1299. the Lord.

  1300. whatever you

  1301. do, work

  1302. at it with

  1303. all your

  1304. heart as

  1305. working for

  1306. the Lord

  1307. and not for

  1308. human masters,

  1309. since you know

  1310. that you will

  1311. receive an

  1312. inheritance from

  1313. the Lord as

  1314. a reward.

  1315. It is the

  1316. Lord Christ

  1317. you are

  1318. serving.

  1319. You see, that

  1320. changes everything,

  1321. doesn't it?

  1322. When we walk

  1323. into work,

  1324. it is the

  1325. Lord Christ

  1326. we're serving.

  1327. We may have

  1328. an earthly

  1329. boss who

  1330. hires us

  1331. and fires

  1332. us, but

  1333. Christians, we

  1334. have a heavenly

  1335. boss, the

  1336. Lord Jesus

  1337. who rescues

  1338. us and

  1339. rules over

  1340. us.

  1341. So the

  1342. question is

  1343. not, is

  1344. my boss

  1345. pleased with

  1346. me today,

  1347. but is

  1348. Jesus honoured

  1349. through my

  1350. life today?

  1351. And of

  1352. course, this

  1353. implies to

  1354. employers

  1355. today.

  1356. So employers,

  1357. if there's

  1358. any of you

  1359. here, verse

  1360. one of

  1361. chapter four,

  1362. employers

  1363. provide for

  1364. your employees

  1365. what is right

  1366. and fair.

  1367. Don't just

  1368. pay the

  1369. minimum wage

  1370. of what you

  1371. can get away

  1372. with.

  1373. Pay them

  1374. what is

  1375. fair.

  1376. And

  1377. employers,

  1378. don't keep

  1379. your employees

  1380. at a minimum

  1381. so that you

  1382. don't have to

  1383. offer a

  1384. contract.

  1385. Do what

  1386. is just.

  1387. And the

  1388. reason, end

  1389. of verse

  1390. one, because

  1391. you know

  1392. that you

  1393. have a

  1394. master in

  1395. heaven.

  1396. Our

  1397. master is

  1398. the Lord

  1399. Jesus and

  1400. he used

  1401. his power

  1402. and authority

  1403. not to

  1404. squelch

  1405. you, but

  1406. to bless

  1407. you.

  1408. So in

  1409. the same

  1410. way,

  1411. employers,

  1412. be

  1413. gracious

  1414. and kind

  1415. to your

  1416. workers.

  1417. You see,

  1418. whether we

  1419. are working

  1420. as an

  1421. employee

  1422. or an

  1423. employer,

  1424. we are

  1425. working for

  1426. the Lord.

  1427. Verse 23,

  1428. whatever you

  1429. do, work at

  1430. it with all

  1431. your heart as

  1432. working for

  1433. the Lord.

  1434. In fact,

  1435. when we work

  1436. for the Lord,

  1437. we can be

  1438. guaranteed of

  1439. two things.

  1440. Do you see

  1441. it there in

  1442. verse 24?

  1443. First, we

  1444. receive an

  1445. eternal

  1446. inheritance.

  1447. Since you

  1448. know that

  1449. you will

  1450. receive an

  1451. inheritance from

  1452. the Lord as

  1453. a reward.

  1454. Every paycheck

  1455. you receive,

  1456. every promotion

  1457. that you get,

  1458. every salary

  1459. increase,

  1460. one day all

  1461. of that is

  1462. going to be

  1463. turned to

  1464. dust.

  1465. You won't

  1466. take it.

  1467. it will be

  1468. left.

  1469. But for the

  1470. Christian who

  1471. works and

  1472. serves for

  1473. the Lord,

  1474. there is an

  1475. eternal reward,

  1476. an eternal

  1477. reward in

  1478. God's

  1479. kingdom.

  1480. And second,

  1481. you will

  1482. receive justice,

  1483. verse 25.

  1484. Anyone who

  1485. does wrong

  1486. will be

  1487. repaid for

  1488. their wrongs.

  1489. And there

  1490. is no

  1491. favouritism.

  1492. God is the

  1493. ultimate

  1494. master.

  1495. He sees all

  1496. that you do

  1497. in private

  1498. and in public.

  1499. He knows

  1500. your employer

  1501. and all that

  1502. he does and

  1503. the motives

  1504. that they have

  1505. for doing

  1506. what they do.

  1507. And one

  1508. day he is

  1509. going to put

  1510. all wrongs

  1511. to right.

  1512. so Christians,

  1513. we don't

  1514. need to

  1515. settle

  1516. scores by

  1517. cheating

  1518. our boss,

  1519. by

  1520. dossing

  1521. off early,

  1522. or taking

  1523. things that

  1524. we want

  1525. that belong

  1526. to the

  1527. office but

  1528. were taken

  1529. home.

  1530. We leave

  1531. all of

  1532. those

  1533. injustices

  1534. with the

  1535. Lord.

  1536. In the

  1537. knowledge we

  1538. will receive

  1539. an eternal

  1540. reward and

  1541. justice will be

  1542. done.

  1543. You see,

  1544. how we work

  1545. every day

  1546. reflects to

  1547. everybody around

  1548. us who our

  1549. true master

  1550. is.

  1551. By obeying

  1552. our employer,

  1553. by providing

  1554. for our

  1555. employee,

  1556. we reflect

  1557. the kind

  1558. of saviour

  1559. we have.

  1560. Our work

  1561. demonstrates

  1562. what it

  1563. looks like

  1564. to live

  1565. for Jesus.

  1566. So third,

  1567. let's do

  1568. our work

  1569. under the

  1570. Lord Jesus

  1571. in a way

  1572. that honours

  1573. him and

  1574. pleases him.

  1575. So let's

  1576. sum up

  1577. together.

  1578. Marriage,

  1579. family,

  1580. and work

  1581. lived under

  1582. the Lordship

  1583. of Jesus

  1584. is not

  1585. oppressive,

  1586. harmful,

  1587. or demeaning.

  1588. It's good

  1589. for you.

  1590. In fact,

  1591. as we live

  1592. under the

  1593. rule of

  1594. Jesus,

  1595. as we go

  1596. into our

  1597. marriages,

  1598. as we live

  1599. our life as

  1600. family,

  1601. as we go

  1602. to work

  1603. tomorrow

  1604. morning,

  1605. as we

  1606. live our

  1607. life under

  1608. his Lordship,

  1609. we are

  1610. displaying a

  1611. picture of

  1612. the Gospel.

  1613. You're a

  1614. living,

  1615. walking

  1616. witness to

  1617. the Gospel.

  1618. Well,

  1619. how do you

  1620. say that?

  1621. Well,

  1622. you see,

  1623. in Jesus

  1624. we see

  1625. the true

  1626. husband

  1627. who loved

  1628. us by

  1629. giving his

  1630. life for

  1631. us.

  1632. We see

  1633. in Jesus

  1634. the ultimate

  1635. parent who

  1636. trains us

  1637. by his

  1638. word and

  1639. by his

  1640. spirit.

  1641. In Jesus

  1642. we have

  1643. the greatest

  1644. employer who

  1645. treats us

  1646. with grace

  1647. and kindness.

  1648. And in

  1649. response,

  1650. as God's

  1651. people,

  1652. we can

  1653. submit to

  1654. him because

  1655. it's good.

  1656. We can

  1657. obey him

  1658. because it's

  1659. best.

  1660. We can

  1661. serve him

  1662. because it's

  1663. the way we

  1664. honour him.

  1665. Not to

  1666. earn his

  1667. favour,

  1668. but because

  1669. we can say

  1670. in our

  1671. hearts,

  1672. he is

  1673. my

  1674. Lord.

  1675. You see,

  1676. it's in the

  1677. context of

  1678. our marriages,

  1679. our family

  1680. and work,

  1681. that we

  1682. demonstrate to

  1683. a watching

  1684. world the

  1685. beauty and

  1686. goodness of

  1687. living under

  1688. God's

  1689. rule.

  1690. God's

  1691. way is

  1692. best and

  1693. right for

  1694. you.

  1695. Let's take

  1696. a moment to

  1697. reflect and

  1698. to pray.

1699. Lord God, we thank you that you are

  1700. like the perfect husband

1701. you are like a perfect parent

1702. you are like a perfect employer

1703. everything you do and have done and will do

1704. is for our good and for our best

1705. and you have proved that through giving of your life for us

  1706. in service

1707. you treat us with kindness and grace

1708. you are patient with us, training us

1709. to become the people you call us to be

  1710. and so in humbleness

  1711. we submit to you

  1712. we obey you

  1713. and we serve you

1714. because you are our Lord

1715. Father, give us all the help that we need

1716. to live our lives well as husbands and wives

  1717. as children and parents

  1718. as employees and employers

1719. and we pray that it will be to your glory

1720. and that as people watch us

1721. that our lives would be a demonstration

1722. of what it is to live under your good

  1723. kind and blessed rule

  1724. help us we ask

  1725. in Jesus name

  1726. Amen

  1727. Amen

  1728. We're going to sing

  1729. Jesus is Lord

1730. I'm not Lord and you're not Lord

  1731. Jesus is Lord
