  1. Well, follow with me as we go to Colossians.

  2. We're almost through Colossians.

  3. We've got another one to go next week.

  4. And today's reading is chapter 4.

    Isaiah 4 chapter mention

  5. 2 to 6 is a flicker around.

  6. Yeah, thank you.

  7. So a short text today.

  8. Colossians 4, starting at verse 2 to 6.

  9. So let's read and then we'll pray and then look at his word together.

  10. So let's read God's word.

  11. Colossians 4, starting at verse 2.

  12. Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

  13. And pray for us too that God may open a door for our message so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ for which I am in chains.

  14. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly as I should.

  15. Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders.

  16. Make the most of every opportunity.

  17. And let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

  18. Well, let's pray.

  19. Father, we ask for your help.

  20. Lord, I pray that you may know how to answer your heart.

  21. Lord, I pray that you may know how to answer your heart.

  22. Lord, I pray that you would open doors to our hearts and to our minds so that we may receive the message of Christ.

  23. Lord, I pray that you may know how to answer your heart.

  24. Lord, I pray that you may know how to answer your heart.

  25. And that you would help me to clearly teach the truth of your word.

  26. So that it honours you and pleases you and equips us as a church to be the kind of people you call us to be.

  27. Thank you that you hear us.

  28. And that now you are speaking to us through your word.

  29. Amen.

  30. Violent stabbings and mindless violence.

  31. I'm sure we all saw the scenes as they unfolded in our capital city.

  32. And we were shocked and saddened by those events.

  33. Lives changed and ruined in just a moment.

  34. Businesses and livelihoods wrecked in an instant.

  35. And as surgeons went to work on the injured and politicians gathered and planned, so came the questions.

  36. How can we stop this?

  37. What can be done in our society?

  38. Some say, well, it will take more powers for our policing.

  39. Others will say stricter laws on immigration.

  40. And of course, with all of these and many more answers, there may be some help.

  41. It may bring some kind of change.

  42. But how long is it going to last?

  43. We need something better.

  44. And you and I, the church here in Carrigoline, are at the very heart of the solution.

  45. Yes, we are.

  46. You see, the answer to our broken lives and our disordered society is the gospel.

  47. A gospel that reconciles people to God and to each other.

  48. A gospel that will bring people from every race and every background under the lordship of Jesus Christ.

  49. This gospel had come to Colossae.

  50. Have a look with me in chapter 1, verse 2.

  51. The gospel had come and it had radically changed the lives of the people.

  52. Do you see it there, verse 2?

  53. The letter to God's holy people.

  54. Not that they were perfect, but they had been changed.

  55. They were holy in God's sight.

  56. They were set apart for God.

  57. The faithful brothers and sisters in Christ.

  58. But the gospel didn't stop there.

  59. It didn't just change their lives.

  60. Have a look down at verse 6.

  61. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world.

  62. Just as it has been doing amongst you since the day you heard it and truly understood God's grace.

  63. These words that we've just read were written nearly 2,000 years ago.

  64. And the fact that we are meeting today here in Karageline is evidence that the gospel has been bearing fruit and growing throughout the world over the generations.

  65. And today there are millions of believers just like us gathering together throughout the world.

  66. God's people who are called to bring the gospel of hope to a broken and disordered society.

  67. So how is the gospel going to bear fruit in our country?

  68. How is the gospel going to reach into our communities and into our town of Karageline?

  69. Well, two very simple things that we're going to see if we go back to chapter 4.

  70. Two simple things that's going to bring about gospel growth.

  71. We talk to God and we talk to people.

  72. Very simple.

  73. Talk to God and talk to people.

  74. First, we talk to God about gospel work.

  75. Verse 2.

  76. Devote yourselves to prayer.

  77. Well, that sounds hard work, doesn't it?

  78. Devoting ourselves to prayer.

  79. Well, look, prayer isn't a duty to perform.

  80. It's a gift and a privilege.

  81. Through prayer, we get to talk to the creator of the universe, our Father God, about what matters most.

  82. We talk to God about the gospel and its impact in our society.

  83. So three things that we can pray for as a church.

  84. We talk to God firstly about open doors.

  85. Look at verse 3.

  86. Pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message,

  87. that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ for which I am in chains.

  88. In many countries around the world, it's illegal to preach the gospel.

  89. You'll be put in prison.

  90. And that's what's happened to Paul, the writer of this letter.

  91. He is, at the end of verse 3, in chains.

  92. So, in some ways, it's natural to think that he's praying to God and asking God,

  93. pray for us that the doors will be opened.

  94. The prison doors will be opened so that I can go free.

  95. But that's not what he's asking for, is it?

  96. Look closely at verse 3.

  97. Pray for us that God may open a door for what?

  98. Our message.

  99. His concern is not so much his release from chains,

  100. but that the gospel would be spread.

  101. You see, the opening of doors is not a physical thing,

  102. but a spiritual work.

  103. Go back with me to Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  104. Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  105. Keep your finger in Colossians and go back to Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  106. Here, Paul has been on one of his mission trips.

  107. And he's just returned and he's reporting back to his home church

  108. all that God had done amongst the people.

  109. Verse 27.

  110. It's right at the end of chapter 14.

  111. Do you see what he says?

  112. On arriving there, that is, at his home church,

  113. they gathered the church together

  114. and reported all that God had done through them

  115. and how God had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.

  116. You see, God was preparing hearts and minds of the people

  117. so that they would be receptive to the gospel.

  118. And he can report back and say,

  119. God has opened up doors.

  120. We see something similar if you go on a couple of chapters.

  121. Chapter 16 and verse 14.

  122. Here they meet a lady, a businesswoman.

  123. And this is what we hear.

  124. Verse 14.

  125. One of those listening to the preaching of the gospel

  126. was a woman from the city of Thyatira,

  127. named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth,

  128. a very expensive clothing item.

  129. She was a worshipper of God, not a believer,

  130. but somebody who had great respect for God.

  131. The Lord opened her heart

  132. to respond to Paul's message.

  133. Let's go back to Colossians 4.

  134. Do you see the opening of doors that is taking place?

  135. God is opening the doors for people.

  136. We can't force people to be interested in the gospel.

  137. We can't make people see their need for Christ.

  138. If somebody is going to listen to the message,

  139. if people are going to be engaged,

  140. God must open a door in their life.

  141. So we need to ask God, by prayer,

  142. to do what we can't do.

  143. Open doors in people's hearts and minds.

  144. The second thing we can pray

  145. is that we would proclaim Christ.

  146. You see, praying for open doors

  147. is just the first step.

  148. Look again at verse 3.

  149. Pray for us so that God may open a door for our message

  150. so that we may proclaim

  151. the mystery of Christ.

  152. The mystery

  153. is to be proclaimed.

  154. Well, you say, that's not very helpful,

  155. proclaiming a mystery.

  156. People mightn't understand what the mystery is.

  157. Well, no, the mystery here

  158. is something that God has revealed.

  159. It's like God has pulled back the curtain

  160. to show us something glorious.

  161. It's the unveiling of God's promised salvation.

  162. We've already learnt about God's mystery.

  163. If you go back to chapter 1, verse 27,

  164. we learn there about this mystery of Christ

  165. and what it is.

  166. Verse 27,

  167. to them, to God's people,

  168. God has chosen to make known

  169. among the Gentiles,

  170. among all people,

  171. the glorious riches

  172. of this mystery.

  173. God has made known

  174. what was hidden.

  175. God has revealed the mystery.

  176. Well, what is the mystery?

  177. Read on.

  178. Which is Christ in you,

  179. the hope of glory.

  180. What an amazing,

  181. rich message this is.

  182. It's got a double edge to it.

  183. Christ in you.

  184. God's promise

  185. that he will never leave you

  186. and always be with you.

  187. God who came in the person of Christ

  188. and the person of Christ

  189. who now dwells in all who believe.

  190. He is with us.

  191. And secondly,

  192. the hope of glory.

  193. God's promise

  194. that he is going to bring his people

  195. to his eternal kingdom.

  196. What a glorious message this is.

  197. You know,

  198. when a woman gets engaged,

  199. she's given a ring.

  200. And we hope that it will be

  201. a nice ring.

  202. Perhaps a double diamond ring.

  203. And it's symbolic,

  204. if you like,

  205. these two diamonds

  206. of intimacy

  207. and security.

  208. The intimacy,

  209. I am with you forever.

  210. The security,

  211. I will keep you forever.

  212. And every time

  213. she looks at the ring,

  214. she's reminded

  215. of the deep love

  216. that is shown towards her.

  217. Well,

  218. this is the message of Christ

  219. that we have.

  220. The glorious,

  221. twin riches

  222. of Christ in you,

  223. which is intimacy.

  224. Christ is with you.

  225. And the other one,

  226. the hope of glory,

  227. which is his security,

  228. his keeping of you.

  229. That is a glorious message

  230. to reach out

  231. into our broken society.

  232. To proclaim anything else

  233. but Christ

  234. would be like a young man

  235. splitting one of his

  236. Christmas crackers

  237. and taking out

  238. that plastic ring

  239. and putting it on

  240. his fiancé's finger.

  241. Not very rich

  242. or precious.

  243. No,

  244. we proclaim

  245. that Christ

  246. is proclaimed.

  247. Anything else

  248. is empty

  249. and hollow.

  250. So we pray

  251. for open doors

  252. that people

  253. may hear

  254. the glorious message

  255. of Christ.

  256. And third,

  257. we pray

  258. for a clear message.

  259. as we began,

  260. we pray

  261. that I would

  262. speak clearly,

  263. that you would

  264. understand

  265. what is being said.

  266. I don't want to make it

  267. complicated

  268. or confusing.

  269. I want us to see

  270. Christ

  271. clearly.

  272. You see,

  273. as we proclaim

  274. Christ,

  275. we're introducing

  276. people to a person.

  277. Not just

  278. information

  279. or facts.

  280. We want people

  281. to know

  282. Christ,

  283. who he is,

  284. and what he has done.

  285. It's like

  286. the big

  287. spotlight

  288. on a stage

  289. at a theatre.

  290. We want

  291. the light

  292. to shine

  293. clearly

  294. on Christ

  295. so people

  296. can see him

  297. for who he is

  298. and what he has

  299. come to do.

  300. So we pray

  301. for open doors.

  302. We pray

  303. that we would

  304. proclaim Christ

  305. and that we

  306. would proclaim

  307. it

  308. clearly.

  309. You see,

  310. prayer is

  311. vital

  312. in all of

  313. these areas.

  314. If we are

  315. to see

  316. gospel

  317. growth,

  318. if we are

  319. to see the

  320. gospel bear

  321. fruit,

  322. if we're

  323. going to see

  324. a change

  325. in our

  326. society,

  327. then the

  328. church

  329. gathered

  330. together

  331. needs to

  332. pray.

  333. Look at

  334. verse 2

  335. again.

  336. Devote

  337. yourselves

  338. to prayer

  339. being

  340. watchful

  341. and

  342. thankful.

  343. You see,

  344. prayer is

  345. hard.

  346. We all

  347. struggle

  348. with it

  349. and very

  350. often it's

  351. prayer that's

  352. pushed out

  353. to the side.

  354. We never

  355. seem to have

  356. time.

  357. It's always

  358. rushed.

  359. That's why

  360. we need to

  361. be watchful.

  362. Remember

  363. what Jesus

  364. said to

  365. his disciples

  366. as Jesus

  367. was preparing

  368. to go to

  369. the cross

  370. as he

  371. went to

  372. the Father

  373. and he

  374. prayed.

  375. He said

  376. to his

  377. disciples,

  378. and I

  379. quote from

  380. Matthew,

  381. watch and

  382. pray so

  383. that you

  384. do not

  385. fall into

  386. temptation.

  387. The

  388. spirit is

  389. willing but

  390. the flesh

  391. is weak.

  392. I think

  393. we've all

  394. experienced

  395. that.

  396. The spirit

  397. is willing

  398. but the

  399. flesh is

  400. weak.

  401. So we

  402. need to

  403. be watchful.

  404. We need

  405. to carve

  406. out time.

  407. We need

  408. to be

  409. thankful

  410. because as

  411. we come

  412. to God

  413. and thank

  414. God for

  415. all that

  416. he's done,

  417. it encourages

  418. us to

  419. pray, to

  420. remind

  421. ourselves,

  422. this is

  423. what God

  424. has given

  425. me.

  426. I give

  427. thanks to

  428. him.

  429. It creates

  430. a dependency.

  431. So we

  432. are intentional

  433. about praying

  434. for God

  435. to be at

  436. work.

  437. We

  438. especially

  439. need to

  440. pray for

  441. those reaching

  442. out with

  443. the gospel.

  444. That's

  445. why we

  446. have our

  447. partners

  448. like Mickey

  449. in Kashmir

  450. or Amy

  451. over in

  452. Sheffield

  453. or think

  454. more closer

  455. to home.

  456. The people

  457. who are

  458. teaching in

  459. Sunday

  460. school right

  461. now.

  462. The people

  463. who will be

  464. teaching in

  465. Rooted this

  466. afternoon.

  467. The people

  468. who will be

  469. gathered here

  470. for Rock

  471. next Friday.

  472. The outreach

  473. events through

  474. polo.

  475. The little

  476. flyer for

  477. Christmas

  478. carols.

  479. All of

  480. these things

  481. we're wanting

  482. people to

  483. know Christ

  484. and the

  485. forgiveness

  486. that he has

  487. for us.

  488. But none

  489. of this will

  490. have an

  491. impact in

  492. anybody's

  493. life unless

  494. God opens

  495. the doors of

  496. people's hearts

  497. and minds.

  498. There won't

  499. be a change.

  500. church.

  501. Everything

  502. will trundle

  503. on the

  504. same.

  505. We need

  506. to pray.

  507. That's why

  508. we send

  509. out texts

  510. during the

  511. week.

  512. You know

  513. on WhatsApp

  514. you get a

  515. little message

  516. that comes

  517. in.

  518. Pray for.

  519. That's why

  520. we send

  521. it.

  522. Because we

  523. need God

  524. to work.

  525. And if you

  526. don't know

  527. what to pray

  528. well just

  529. turn to

  530. Colossians

    Colossians 4:3

  531. 4 verse

  532. 3.

  533. Pray that

  534. doors will

  535. be opened.

  536. Pray that

  537. Christ would

  538. be at the

  539. heart of the

  540. message.

  541. And pray

  542. that those

  543. who teach

  544. would make

  545. it clear.

  546. So how

  547. are we going

  548. to see

  549. gospel growth?

  550. Well

  551. first we

  552. talk to

  553. God

  554. about

  555. gospel

  556. work.

  557. Second

  558. we talk

  559. to people

  560. about

  561. gospel

  562. grace.

  563. We talk

  564. to God

  565. and now

  566. we talk

  567. to people.

  568. Look at

  569. verses 5

  570. and 6

  571. with me.

  572. Be wise

  573. in the way

  574. you act

  575. towards

  576. outsiders.

  577. Make the

  578. most of

  579. every

  580. opportunity

  581. and let

  582. your

  583. conversation

  584. be always

  585. full of

  586. grace

  587. seasoned

  588. with salt

  589. so that

  590. you may

  591. know

  592. how to

  593. answer

  594. everyone.

  595. Look I

  596. get it

  597. we might

  598. not all

  599. be

  600. teachers

  601. and

  602. preachers

  603. we

  604. might

  605. not

  606. be

  607. able

  608. to

  609. teach

  610. in

  611. Sunday

  612. school

  613. or

  614. the

  615. rock

  616. but

  617. we

  618. all

  619. have

  620. conversations

  621. every

  622. single

  623. day

  624. with

  625. all

  626. kinds

  627. of

  628. people

  629. family

  630. friends

  631. colleagues

  632. so the

  633. expectation

  634. I think

  635. of these

  636. couple

  637. of

  638. verses

  639. is that

  640. in

  641. our

  642. day

  643. to

  644. day

  645. conversations

  646. with

  647. people

  648. we

  649. would

  650. be

  651. looking

  652. for

  653. opportunities

  654. to

  655. talk

  656. about

  657. Christ

  658. Christ

  659. well how

  660. do we

  661. do that

  662. well three

  663. things

  664. here's the

  665. first thing

  666. we need to

  667. watch

  668. our

  669. behaviour

  670. watch our

  671. behaviour

  672. look at

  673. verse

  674. five

  675. be wise

  676. in the way

  677. you act

  678. towards

  679. outsiders

  680. you see

  681. yes we're

  682. to engage

  683. in conversation

  684. but it's not

  685. just our

  686. words

  687. but our

  688. behaviour

  689. that matters

  690. you see

  691. people don't

  692. just listen

  693. with their

  694. ears

  695. they're

  696. watching

  697. our

  698. lives

  699. one writer

  700. put it

  701. like this

  702. you can

  703. see it

  704. on screen

  705. here

  706. God's

  707. purpose

  708. is that

  709. the good

  710. news of

  711. Jesus

  712. Christ

  713. is set

  714. forth

  715. visually

  716. as well

  717. as verbally

  718. by seeing

  719. and hearing

  720. people have

  721. to see

  722. with their

  723. own eyes

  724. that the

  725. gospel we

  726. preach

  727. has

  728. transformed

  729. me

  730. to put it

  731. simply

  732. we need

  733. to look

  734. like the

  735. message that

  736. we're talking

  737. about

  738. so if I'm

  739. talking about

  740. grace

  741. I should

  742. demonstrate

  743. grace

  744. if I'm

  745. talking about

  746. forgiveness

  747. I should

  748. practice

  749. forgiveness

  750. my life

  751. should be

  752. a

  753. demonstration

  754. model of

  755. what happens

  756. when you

  757. believe the

  758. gospel

  759. even when

  760. we're not

  761. in conversation

  762. our lives

  763. are witnessing

  764. our actions

  765. as we say

  766. can sometimes

  767. speak louder

  768. than our

  769. words

  770. here's two

  771. examples

  772. two

  773. texts

  774. from

  775. scripture

  776. the first

  777. one is

  778. from

  779. Titus

  780. and it's

  781. talking about

  782. our relationships

  783. one to

  784. another

  785. and how

  786. we treat

  787. each other

  788. and the

  789. difference

  790. that makes

  791. and here's

  792. the difference

  793. look at the

  794. top one

  795. so that in

  796. every way

  797. they will

  798. make the

  799. teaching about

  800. God our

  801. saviour

  802. attractive

  803. do you

  804. see that

  805. our behaviour

  806. makes the

  807. message of

  808. Christ

  809. attractive

  810. to people

  811. here's

  812. another one

  813. that comes

  814. from

  815. Peter

  816. in this

  817. case

  818. it's

  819. talking

  820. about

  821. two

  822. wives

  823. about

  824. their

  825. husbands

  826. who

  827. may

  828. not

  829. be

  830. believers

  831. and

  832. it

  833. can

  834. apply

  835. the

  836. other

  837. way

  838. as

  839. well

  840. our

  841. message

  842. itself

  843. is

  844. grace

  845. filled

  846. that's

  847. what it

  848. says

  849. verse 6

  850. I think

  851. this can

  852. apply two

  853. ways

  854. let your

  855. conversation

  856. be always

  857. full of

  858. grace

  859. not just

  860. graciously

  861. in how

  862. we talk

  863. but that

  864. the message

  865. would be

  866. graceful

  867. You see, we're not passing on a message for people to download information

  868. or to offer some advice that you can take or leave.

  869. No, our message is full of transforming grace.

  870. It's a work that God does.

  871. That's what grace is.

  872. It's God's free gift of salvation that is unearned and undeserved.

  873. Have a look back to chapter 1, verse 12.

  874. Here's a wonderful example of showing us that this is God's work in us.

  875. Look at verse 12 of chapter 1.

  876. Give joyful thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in his inheritance

  877. of his holy people in the kingdom of light.

  878. Who qualified you?

  879. He qualified you.

  880. He made you right.

  881. Verse 13.

  882. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness

  883. and he has brought us into the kingdom of his Son

  884. in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of our sins.

  885. You see, it's God who is doing the work in us.

  886. It's a message of grace.

  887. It's free.

  888. And we are simply pointing people to the one who has done everything for us.

  889. Here's a quote to help us get our minds around it.

  890. The gospel, the good news of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

  891. is the astonishing announcement

  892. that God has done the whole work of reconciliation

  893. without a scrap of human assistance.

  894. Isn't that wonderful?

  895. Isn't that wonderful?

  896. That God was the one who came searching for me

  897. and reached down to me.

  898. That he would come and forgive me.

  899. You see, when we fail others,

  900. they write us off.

  901. But when we come to Christ with our failures,

  902. he welcomes us in.

  903. You will not see or hear a more radical message.

  904. This is what our friends, our family,

  905. our colleagues and our neighbours

  906. and we need to hear constantly.

  907. May our message be grace-filled.

  908. You see, the gospel comes wrapped up in our lives.

  909. It's not just a message detached from us as people.

  910. It's like giving that diamond ring to your fiancé.

  911. If you put that ring into an old, torn and dirty box

  912. and just left it on the side,

  913. it might never be opened.

  914. It could be thrown into the bin.

  915. But if that diamond ring is placed in a velvet box

  916. with a beautiful red ribbon,

  917. it most certainly will be opened.

  918. Well, in the same way,

  919. we have the treasures of the gospel

  920. that are wrapped up in the beauty

  921. of our words and our behaviour.

  922. So as we disperse,

  923. as we scatter into our community,

  924. to our workplaces,

  925. we go with a message of grace.

  926. How are people going to see gospel growth?

  927. We talk to people about the gospel of grace.

  928. Our community,

  929. our country is in desperate need

  930. and God has called us to the very forefront

  931. of bringing hope to a needy people.

  932. It's people like you and me.

  933. As we talk to God

  934. and as we talk to people,

  935. that's what will make a difference.

  936. Let's talk to God now.

  937. Our Father God,

  938. we thank you so much

  939. for the grace of your gospel.

  940. We thank you for those who have taught us

  941. and who are willing to share their lives with us

  942. so that we might hear and receive

  943. the good news of Jesus.

  944. So we pray

  945. that as we go into this week,

  946. we would be a people who talk to God

  947. and talk to people.

  948. Father,

  949. Father, open doors for us.

  950. Help us to take every opportunity given to us

  951. and help us to live our lives out well

  952. so that we reflect all that we say

  953. through the beauty of our words and our lives.

  954. Father, do your work in this country

  955. and in our community

  956. for your glory,

  957. the praise of your name

  958. and for the good of our nation.

  959. Amen.
