  1. Over this season we've been using Matthew to help us think about and reflect on the coming of Christ.

  2. So Matthew's Gospel, Chapter 2.

  3. Last week we looked at the birth.

  4. And in Chapter 2 we're going to be thinking about responses.

  5. So as I read the text, maybe that's something you can be doing is thinking about what are the different responses I see or hear in the text.

  6. Well let's read Matthew Chapter 2, verses 1 to 12.

    Matthew 2:1–12

  7. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea during the time of King Herod,

  8. Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked,

  9. Where is the one who's been born King of the Jews?

  10. We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.

  11. When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed and all Jerusalem with him.

  12. When he had called together all the people's chief priests and the teachers of the law,

  13. he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.

  14. In Bethlehem in Judea, they replied,

  15. For this is what the prophet has written.

  16. But you, Bethlehem in the land of Judea,

  17. are by no means least among the rulers of Judah.

  18. For out of you will come a ruler

  19. who will shepherd my people Israel.

  20. Then Herod called the Magi secretly

  21. and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.

  22. He sent them to Bethlehem and said,

  23. Go and search carefully for the child.

  24. As soon as you find him, report to me so that I too may go and worship him.

  25. After they had heard the king,

  26. they went on their way and the star they had seen when it rose,

  27. went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.

  28. When they saw the star,

  29. they were overjoyed.

  30. On coming to the house,

  31. they saw the child with his mother Mary.

  32. They bowed down and worshipped him.

  33. Then they opened their treasures

  34. and presented him with gifts of gold,

  35. frankincense,

  36. and myrrh.

  37. And having been warned in a dream

  38. not to go back to Herod,

  39. they returned to their country

  40. by another route.

  41. Well, let's pray

  42. and ask for God's help.

  43. Father, thank you for this

  44. account, for this record

  45. around the birth of Christ.

  46. we believe that this is your word to us today,

  47. speaking into our lives.

  48. And we pray that as we reflect on this together,

  49. that your word would travel deeply into our hearts

  50. and it would cause us

  51. to respond

  52. in a way that honours you

  53. and is good for us.

  54. So help us now, we pray.

  55. Amen.

  56. Brussels sprouts.

  57. What do you think

  58. of these festive green veggies

  59. that appear in our shops

  60. at this time of year?

  61. Well, one thing is for sure,

  62. they're not neutral, are they?

  63. You either love them

  64. or you loathe them.

  65. You either pile them high on your plate

  66. or you feed them to the dog under the table.

  67. The humble Brussels

  68. can be quite divisive, can't it?

  69. Well, there's another festive ingredient

  70. that produces an even stronger opinion.

  71. The birth of Christ.

  72. And one thing for sure is

  73. this account is not neutral.

  74. In fact, it seems that everybody has a view,

  75. not just then,

  76. but today.

  77. If you were to ask people

  78. or to mention Jesus,

  79. what you think,

  80. does he fit into Christmas?

  81. You will be sure to get a response.

  82. And in our text,

  83. and maybe you can discuss this with me afterwards

  84. over tea and coffee,

  85. I think we see at least three different people

  86. who give three different responses

  87. to the birth of Christ.

  88. In fact, their responses are a reflection

  89. of the way in which we might respond

  90. of the way in which we might respond

  91. to Jesus Christ.

  92. So at the very outset,

  93. I have this question for us all.

  94. What is my response?

  95. What is your response today

  96. to the person of Jesus Christ?

  97. What's your response?

  98. How does it affect your life?

  99. Well, here's the first response

  100. that I think we see.

  101. Disturbed.

  102. Look at verse 3.

  103. When King Herod heard this,

  104. when he heard about the birth of Jesus,

  105. he was disturbed

  106. and all Jerusalem with him.

  107. Why is Herod disturbed?

  108. Why is he so upset?

  109. Well, look back at verse 1.

  110. Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea

  111. during the time of King Herod.

  112. Herod had been made king

  113. by the occupying Romans.

  114. And of course, if you are king,

  115. well, you do happen to have

  116. a kind of God-like status.

  117. But now all of a sudden,

  118. he's been confronted

  119. with some very disturbing news.

  120. Herod had some guests

  121. who've come knocking at his door.

  122. Look at the rest of verse 1.

  123. Magi from the east came to Jerusalem.

  124. Now the Magi,

  125. from what you may have heard,

  126. are not just stargazers.

  127. They're not just there

  128. looking out of their telescope,

  129. wondering what's happening

  130. up in the skies.

  131. They're well-respected astrologers.

  132. They were people of great influence,

  133. wealthy.

  134. They had a certain amount of authority

  135. and would give advice

  136. to leaders and to rulers.

  137. And they've come

  138. and found their way to Herod.

  139. They knock on his door

  140. and they have a question.

  141. Where is the one

  142. who's been born king of the Jews?

  143. We saw his star when it rose

  144. and we've come to worship him.

  145. Well, you could hear

  146. Herod's unspoken response.

  147. What?

  148. What do you mean

  149. where's the king

  150. who's been born king of the Jews?

  151. I'm the king of the Jews.

  152. What the Magi did

  153. would be like us

  154. going off to Moscow

  155. and having a private audience

  156. with Putin

  157. and saying,

  158. excuse me, Mr. Putin,

  159. could you tell me

  160. where I might find

  161. the president of Russia?

  162. My goodness me,

  163. it's not the sort of thing

  164. you go asking, is it?

  165. And for Herod

  166. to be asking him

  167. that kind of question,

  168. well, it was equal

  169. to treason.

  170. Look at verse 3 again.

  171. When King Herod

  172. heard this,

  173. that they were looking

  174. for a king,

  175. he was disturbed.

  176. literally means

  177. he was seething.

  178. He is raging.

  179. Prominent officials

  180. coming from another country

  181. and they've come

  182. to worship a king

  183. and it's not him.

  184. The problem for Herod is

  185. this is all too personal.

  186. Herod is confronted

  187. with the reality

  188. that though he's been

  189. appointed as a king,

  190. though he's ruling

  191. as a king,

  192. he's not

  193. the king

  194. and he doesn't

  195. like it.

  196. You see,

  197. Jesus

  198. confronts

  199. our

  200. autonomy.

  201. He confronts

  202. us

  203. head on.

  204. Now, we mightn't

  205. have grand titles

  206. as King Herod did,

  207. but we surely

  208. do act as

  209. king,

  210. don't we?

  211. We appoint

  212. ourselves

  213. as king.

  214. We rule

  215. as if

  216. I am king.

  217. Well, this is

  218. my life

  219. and I'm going

  220. to live it

  221. the way

  222. I want to.

  223. I want to

  224. express

  225. myself.

  226. I want to be

  227. the real,

  228. authentic

  229. me

  230. and, well,

  231. that's just

  232. doing things

  233. the way I want

  234. to do it.

  235. We've all claimed

  236. a God-like

  237. status.

  238. You see,

  239. the coming

  240. of Jesus

  241. confronts

  242. not just

  243. Herod

  244. back in

  245. Matthew's

  246. day,

  247. but he is

  248. confronting

  249. us again

  250. through these

  251. words.

  252. He's claiming

  253. an authority

  254. over us.

  255. He's saying,

  256. I made you,

  257. I own you,

  258. you belong

  259. to me.

  260. He demands

  261. an allegiance

  262. from us.

  263. In fact,

  264. with any king,

  265. there's only

  266. one throne,

  267. isn't there?

  268. And there's

  269. room for only

  270. one person

  271. to sit on it.

  272. Either I'm

  273. going to sit

  274. on the throne,

  275. or God

  276. is going

  277. to sit

  278. on the throne.

  279. Well,

  280. Herod was

  281. so resistant,

  282. he took

  283. extreme action,

  284. didn't he?

  285. Just jump

  286. ahead to

  287. chapter 2,

  288. verse 16.

  289. Chapter 2,

  290. verse 16.

  291. When Herod

  292. realised that

  293. he had been

  294. outwitted

  295. by the Magi,

  296. he was

  297. furious

  298. and he gave

  299. orders to

  300. kill all the

  301. boys in

  302. Bethlehem

  303. and in

  304. its vicinity

  305. who were

  306. two years

  307. and under.

  308. I'm

  309. getting rid

  310. of this

  311. king.

  312. Now,

  313. we're rightfully

  314. horrified with

  315. Herod's actions,

  316. yet at the

  317. same time,

  318. let's face

  319. reality.

  320. There's a little

  321. Herod sitting

  322. on the throne

  323. of our own

  324. hearts,

  325. isn't there?

  326. any challenge

  327. to self-rule

  328. and we

  329. tend to

  330. push

  331. Jesus out.

  332. What's your

  333. response

  334. to Jesus

  335. today?

  336. This is my

  337. life

  338. and I'm

  339. going to

  340. live as I

  341. please?

  342. Are you

  343. disturbed

  344. with Jesus'

  345. claim

  346. over you?

  347. So,

  348. disturbed

  349. is one

  350. response.

  351. Here's the

  352. second

  353. response.

  354. Unmoved.

  355. Who's

  356. unmoved?

  357. Well,

  358. we'll find

  359. out.

  360. Have a look

  361. at verse

  362. four.

  363. When he

  364. had called

  365. together all

  366. the people's

  367. chief priests

  368. and the

  369. teachers of

  370. the law,

  371. Herod asked

  372. them,

  373. where's this

  374. Messiah to

  375. be born?

  376. Now,

  377. we know

  378. he's got

  379. ulterior motives.

  380. He's wanting

  381. to find out

  382. where he

  383. is so

  384. that he

  385. can kill

  386. him.

  387. So,

  388. he brings

  389. in all

  390. the most

  391. respected

  392. religious

  393. scholars of

  394. the day.

  395. After all,

  396. he was in

  397. Jewish territory

  398. and,

  399. well,

  400. the experts,

  401. they knew

  402. their scriptures,

  403. they knew

  404. their Bible

  405. and they

  406. were going

  407. to be the

  408. best

  409. interpreters

  410. and they

  411. were going

  412. to tell

  413. him where

  414. Jesus was

  415. going to

  416. be born.

  417. And,

  418. sure enough,

  419. they don't

  420. disappoint.

  421. Verse five,

  422. Bethlehem

  423. in Judea.

  424. Well,

  425. how do

  426. they know

  427. that?

  428. Well,

  429. because,

  430. verse five,

  431. this is what

  432. the prophet

  433. has written

  434. and they

  435. quote the

  436. prophet

  437. Micah.

  438. Verse six,

  439. but you,

  440. Bethlehem,

  441. in the land

  442. of Judea,

  443. are by no

  444. means least

  445. among the

  446. rulers of

  447. Judah.

  448. Bethlehem

  449. being an

  450. insignificant,

  451. tiny little

  452. outcrop of

  453. a few houses

  454. and a few

  455. buildings.

  456. Kind of

  457. Ballyhonas

  458. territory.

  459. For out of

  460. you will

  461. come a

  462. ruler who

  463. will shepherd

  464. my people

  465. Israel.

  466. Now,

  467. this is a

  468. prophecy,

  469. isn't it,

  470. about the

  471. coming of

  472. Jesus,

  473. God's

  474. promised

  475. king.

  476. And,

  477. these

  478. magi have

  479. heard about

  480. this promised

  481. king and

  482. they're seeking

  483. out this

  484. very king

  485. and the

  486. religious

  487. authorities

  488. have just

  489. quoted,

  490. understood,

  491. this is

  492. where he's

  493. coming from.

  494. So,

  495. we would

  496. expect,

  497. wouldn't we,

  498. the religious

  499. leaders to

  500. go and

  501. join in

  502. the search

  503. because surely

  504. they too

  505. want to

  506. worship

  507. the promised

  508. king.

  509. king.

  510. But,

  511. no,

  512. these

  513. religious

  514. folk are

  515. completely

  516. unmoved.

  517. There's

  518. nothing in

  519. the text

  520. whatsoever

  521. indicating that

  522. they were in

  523. the slightest

  524. bit interested.

  525. Imagine,

  526. after all the

  527. years and all

  528. the waiting and

  529. all the history

  530. and all the

  531. promises,

  532. all building up,

  533. the Messiah is

  534. coming,

  535. the Messiah is

  536. coming,

  537. the expectation

  538. of a

  539. rescuer.

  540. Quick,

  541. come on,

  542. he's here,

  543. let's go find

  544. the king.

  545. But,

  546. they're

  547. completely

  548. disinterested,

  549. indifferent.

  550. They are

  551. totally

  552. unmoved.

  553. Of all the

  554. people you

  555. would expect

  556. to be

  557. interested and

  558. excited,

  559. it must be

  560. the religious

  561. leaders.

  562. Well,

  563. it seems

  564. being religious

  565. and knowing

  566. your Bible

  567. and going

  568. to church

  569. and doing

  570. all the

  571. right kind

  572. of stuff

  573. doesn't

  574. actually mean

  575. that you

  576. love Jesus.

  577. Well,

  578. how could

  579. this be?

  580. Well,

  581. Jesus

  582. reveals

  583. our pride.

  584. It seems

  585. the religious

  586. leaders saw

  587. no need

  588. of Jesus

  589. personally.

  590. After all,

  591. they were

  592. the leaders,

  593. they were

  594. top of

  595. their field.

  596. Others

  597. might need

  598. Jesus,

  599. but not

  600. us.

  601. Look again

  602. at the

  603. quote,

  604. the end

  605. of verse

  606. six.

  607. It says,

  608. out of

  609. Bethlehem

  610. will come

  611. a ruler

  612. who will

  613. shepherd

  614. my people

  615. Israel.

  616. Jesus,

  617. we're told,

  618. is coming

  619. as a shepherd.

  620. But hang

  621. on a minute,

  622. isn't that

  623. what the

  624. religious

  625. rulers were?

  626. Weren't

  627. they meant

  628. to be

  629. the shepherds

  630. and the

  631. carers

  632. of God's

  633. people?

  634. Who's

  635. this

  636. shepherd

  637. that's

  638. coming?

  639. Well,

  640. we get

  641. an insight

  642. into what

  643. this shepherd

  644. would be

  645. like if we

  646. just jump

  647. on a couple

  648. of pages

  649. to Matthew

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  650. chapter 9.

  651. Have a look

  652. over there

  653. with me.

  654. Chapter 9

  655. verse 36.

  656. Just one

  657. verse helping

  658. us to see

  659. what this

  660. shepherd Jesus

  661. would be

  662. like.

  663. Verse 36,

  664. when he,

  665. when Jesus

  666. saw the

  667. crowds,

  668. he had

  669. compassion

  670. on them

  671. because they

  672. were harassed

  673. and helpless

  674. like sheep

  675. without a

  676. shepherd.

  677. When Jesus

  678. looks out

  679. and as he

  680. went walking

  681. about the

  682. towns,

  683. he saw

  684. wandering

  685. sheep.

  686. That's what

  687. people were

  688. like to him.

  689. Sheep get

  690. lost by

  691. themselves,

  692. don't they?

  693. And they get

  694. into trouble

  695. and they can't

  696. help themselves.

  697. And Jesus

  698. is looking out

  699. and he's

  700. saying,

  701. well,

  702. that's what

  703. people are

  704. like.

  705. In fact,

  706. he describes

  707. them as

  708. being harassed

  709. and helpless.

  710. To be

  711. harassed is

  712. to be

  713. overcome

  714. with anxiety

  715. and fears.

  716. It's a

  717. consequence

  718. of living

  719. without God,

  720. constantly

  721. overwhelmed

  722. and frantically

  723. trying to

  724. control our

  725. future.

  726. Never at

  727. peace.

  728. Always

  729. searching,

  730. never finding.

  731. harassed

  732. with the

  733. pressures

  734. of life.

  735. But as

  736. he also

  737. looked at

  738. the crowds,

  739. he says,

  740. well,

  741. we're not

  742. just harassed,

  743. but we're

  744. helpless.

  745. We're

  746. helpless to

  747. see how

  748. serious our

  749. situation is,

  750. helpless to

  751. do anything

  752. about it.

  753. And the

  754. problem is,

  755. we can't

  756. even see

  757. it.

  758. We're in

  759. danger,

  760. living a

  761. life on

  762. our own

  763. without

  764. God.

  765. A

  766. helpless

  767. situation.

  768. That's

  769. what Jesus

  770. saw as

  771. he wandered

  772. the streets.

  773. Not just

  774. people,

  775. but the

  776. religious

  777. leaders

  778. too.

  779. So how

  780. would you

  781. feel about

  782. God's

  783. assessment

  784. of you

  785. and me

  786. that,

  787. well,

  788. he sees

  789. people who

  790. are harassed

  791. and helpless.

  792. It knocks

  793. our pride

  794. a little

  795. bit,

  796. doesn't

  797. it?

  798. Especially

  799. religious

  800. folk.

  801. You see,

  802. we can be

  803. all doing

  804. the right

  805. religious

  806. things,

  807. but never

  808. actually

  809. seeing our

  810. desperate

  811. need of

  812. Jesus.

  813. Well,

  814. my life is

  815. in good

  816. shape.

  817. I have

  818. it together.

  819. I know

  820. the Bible

  821. story.

  822. I get

  823. church.

  824. I understand

  825. what that's

  826. all about.

  827. But when

  828. it comes

  829. to seeing

  830. our need

  831. of him

  832. and living

  833. for him

  834. and experiencing

  835. him in our

  836. life,

  837. well,

  838. maybe sometimes

  839. we can be

  840. just completely

  841. unmoved.

  842. Oh,

  843. I know

  844. the story.

  845. I know

  846. the Christmas

  847. story.

  848. I've heard

  849. it.

  850. Our hearts

  851. remain

  852. disinterested

  853. and indifferent.

  854. Is that

  855. your response

  856. today?

  857. It's not

  858. me who

  859. needs

  860. Jesus.

  861. Other people

  862. might,

  863. but not

  864. me.

  865. So,

  866. maybe it's

  867. a case

  868. of being

  869. disturbed.

  870. Maybe it's

  871. a case

  872. of being

  873. unmoved.

  874. Or there's

  875. a third

  876. response.

  877. Overjoyed.

  878. look at

  879. how the

  880. magi

  881. responded.

  882. Look at

  883. verse 10

  884. with me.

  885. Chapter 2,

  886. verse 10.

  887. Go back

  888. to where we

  889. were.

  890. Chapter 2,

  891. verse 10.

  892. When they

  893. saw the

  894. star,

  895. they were

  896. overjoyed.

  897. Rather than

  898. disturbed like

  899. Herod,

  900. instead of

  901. being unmoved

  902. like the

  903. religious leaders,

  904. these magi

  905. are overjoyed.

  906. They're

  907. overwhelmed.

  908. Why are they

  909. so joyful?

  910. Well,

  911. consider two

  912. things with me.

  913. First,

  914. the star.

  915. The star is

  916. all over the

  917. text,

  918. isn't it,

  919. that we've

  920. read?

  921. It's no

  922. ordinary

  923. star.

  924. Have a

  925. look at

  926. verse 2.

  927. Where is

  928. the one

  929. who's been

  930. born king

  931. of the

  932. Jews?

  933. We saw

  934. his star

  935. when it

  936. rose,

  937. and have

  938. come to

  939. worship him.

  940. Now,

  941. it's

  942. fascinating,

  943. it's

  944. extraordinary.

  945. It was

  946. moving,

  947. this star

  948. in the sky

  949. was moving

  950. in such a

  951. way that

  952. they could

  953. follow it.

  954. Theologians

  955. and historians

  956. reckon that

  957. these magi

  958. had travelled

  959. up to a

  960. thousand miles

  961. following

  962. this star.

  963. This

  964. strange event

  965. in the

  966. skies.

  967. And

  968. they're

  969. concerned to

  970. find out

  971. what's this

  972. star all

  973. about?

  974. What does

  975. it mean?

  976. Well,

  977. the star

  978. led them

  979. secondly to

  980. a person.

  981. Again,

  982. look at

  983. verse 2.

  984. Did you

  985. read it

  986. carefully?

  987. Look at

  988. the end

  989. of verse 2.

  990. We saw

  991. his star.

  992. Well,

  993. whose star?

  994. Jesus'

  995. star.

  996. This was

  997. a star

  998. pointing to

  999. King Jesus.

  1000. But think

  1001. about it.

  1002. How did

  1003. they know

  1004. it was

  1005. his star?

  1006. Who told

  1007. them it

  1008. was Jesus'

  1009. star?

  1010. Well,

  1011. being educated

  1012. people,

  1013. they would

  1014. have had

  1015. access to

  1016. writings of

  1017. other nations

  1018. and books

  1019. and prophecies

  1020. of other

  1021. people.

  1022. Writings,

  1023. I'm going

  1024. to suggest

  1025. to you

  1026. like the

  1027. book of

  1028. Isaiah.

  1029. Have a

  1030. look with

  1031. me in

  1032. Isaiah

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  1033. chapter 60.

  1034. Isaiah

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  1035. chapter 60.

  1036. So they've

  1037. seen this

  1038. star in

  1039. the sky.

  1040. They've

  1041. even given

  1042. it a name

  1043. and saying

  1044. it's his

  1045. star,

  1046. as in

  1047. it's the

  1048. king of

  1049. the Jews.

  1050. It's his

  1051. star,

  1052. we're

  1053. following

  1054. this star.

  1055. But how

  1056. did they

  1057. know?

  1058. Like,

  1059. what gave

  1060. them that

  1061. impression?

  1062. Well,

  1063. let's

  1064. have a

  1065. read of

  1066. Isaiah

  1067. 60.

  1068. Here God

  1069. is talking

  1070. about the

  1071. coming of

  1072. Jesus,

  1073. but look

  1074. how he

  1075. describes

  1076. his

  1077. coming.

  1078. Verse 1,

  1079. Arise,

  1080. shine,

  1081. for your

  1082. light has

  1083. come,

  1084. and the

  1085. glory of

  1086. the Lord

  1087. rises upon

  1088. you.

  1089. See,

  1090. darkness

  1091. covers the

  1092. earth,

  1093. and thick

  1094. darkness is

  1095. over the

  1096. peoples.

  1097. But the

  1098. Lord rises

  1099. upon you,

  1100. and his

  1101. glory

  1102. appears

  1103. over you.

  1104. Nations

  1105. will come

  1106. to your

  1107. light,

  1108. and the

  1109. kings

  1110. to the

  1111. brightness

  1112. of your

  1113. dawn.

  1114. Lift up

  1115. your eyes,

  1116. look about

  1117. you,

  1118. all

  1119. assemble,

  1120. come to

  1121. you.

  1122. Your

  1123. sons

  1124. come from

  1125. afar,

  1126. and your

  1127. daughters

  1128. who are

  1129. carried on

  1130. the hip.

  1131. Then

  1132. you will

  1133. look and

  1134. be radiant,

  1135. your heart

  1136. will throb

  1137. and swell

  1138. with joy,

  1139. the wealth

  1140. and the

  1141. seeds will

  1142. be brought

  1143. to you,

  1144. to the

  1145. riches of

  1146. the nations

  1147. will come.

  1148. Herds of

  1149. camels will

  1150. cover your

  1151. land,

  1152. young camels

  1153. of Midian

  1154. and Ephah,

  1155. and all

  1156. from Sheba

  1157. will come,

  1158. bearing gold

  1159. and incense,

  1160. and proclaiming

  1161. the praise

  1162. of the

  1163. Lord.

  1164. A

  1165. fascinating

  1166. text,

  1167. isn't it?

  1168. this

  1169. star,

  1170. this

  1171. light

  1172. that

  1173. rises,

  1174. that goes

  1175. before you

  1176. is directing

  1177. them to

  1178. someone who

  1179. is going to

  1180. be the

  1181. hope of

  1182. the world,

  1183. a light

  1184. that's going

  1185. to remove

  1186. the darkness,

  1187. a light

  1188. that was

  1189. going to

  1190. attract

  1191. nations,

  1192. one who

  1193. was worthy

  1194. of people's

  1195. praise,

  1196. whether they

  1197. were young

  1198. or old.

  1199. Let's go

  1200. back to

  1201. Matthew

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  1202. chapter 2.

  1203. Now I'm

  1204. not saying

  1205. the Magi

  1206. knew everything

  1207. about who

  1208. Jesus was

  1209. and what

  1210. he was

  1211. coming to

  1212. do,

  1213. but I

  1214. think we

  1215. can be

  1216. very clear

  1217. that they

  1218. did know

  1219. that this

  1220. Jesus

  1221. was sent

  1222. by creator

  1223. God

  1224. and was

  1225. going to

  1226. be the

  1227. hope of

  1228. the world.

  1229. Yes,

  1230. the star

  1231. was of

  1232. interest,

  1233. but it

  1234. was where

  1235. the star

  1236. came to,

  1237. verse 11,

  1238. verse 10,

  1239. that,

  1240. sorry,

  1241. where is it,

  1242. end of

  1243. verse 9,

  1244. it stopped

  1245. over the

  1246. place where

  1247. the child

  1248. was.

  1249. It was

  1250. bringing them

  1251. and pointing

  1252. them to

  1253. the person

  1254. of Christ.

  1255. They were

  1256. overjoyed

  1257. because the

  1258. promises that

  1259. they had

  1260. read and

  1261. heard about

  1262. had now

  1263. been

  1264. fulfilled.

  1265. In fact,

  1266. their joy

  1267. had led

  1268. to worship.

  1269. You see,

  1270. Jesus

  1271. deserves

  1272. our worship.

  1273. Look at

  1274. verse 11.

  1275. On coming

  1276. to the

  1277. house,

  1278. they saw

  1279. the child

  1280. with his

  1281. mother Mary

  1282. and they

  1283. bowed down

  1284. and worshipped

  1285. him.

  1286. Now,

  1287. worship isn't

  1288. just confined

  1289. to a

  1290. religious

  1291. building.

  1292. Worship

  1293. is something

  1294. all of us

  1295. do all

  1296. of the

  1297. time.

  1298. It simply

  1299. means to

  1300. serve or

  1301. to bow

  1302. down to.

  1303. It comes

  1304. from the

  1305. words worth

  1306. or worthy.

  1307. It's giving

  1308. something or

  1309. someone value

  1310. and honour.

  1311. it's something

  1312. that we

  1313. consider to

  1314. be of our

  1315. highest value

  1316. and whatever

  1317. we consider

  1318. to be of

  1319. greatest value

  1320. to us in

  1321. our life,

  1322. that's what

  1323. we serve.

  1324. That's what

  1325. we bow down

  1326. to.

  1327. That's what

  1328. we worship.

  1329. it.

  1330. So,

  1331. what is the

  1332. highest honour

  1333. in your life?

  1334. What do you

  1335. give greatest

  1336. value to?

  1337. Is it your

  1338. own physical

  1339. body and

  1340. how you

  1341. look?

  1342. Is it

  1343. getting grades

  1344. and certain

  1345. careers and

  1346. being successful

  1347. in your job?

  1348. Is it your

  1349. children?

  1350. or sport

  1351. or some

  1352. team?

  1353. What is it

  1354. that is of

  1355. greatest value

  1356. to you?

  1357. Well,

  1358. look at the

  1359. magi.

  1360. They had

  1361. come to see

  1362. that Jesus

  1363. was of

  1364. greatest value

  1365. to them.

  1366. Look at how

  1367. they responded,

  1368. verse 11.

  1369. On coming

  1370. to the house,

  1371. they saw

  1372. the child

  1373. with his

  1374. mother Mary.

  1375. They bowed

  1376. down and

  1377. worshipped him.

  1378. Then they

  1379. opened their

  1380. treasures and

  1381. presented him

  1382. with the

  1383. gifts of

  1384. gold,

  1385. frankincense

  1386. and myrrh.

  1387. They bowed

  1388. down to

  1389. this child.

  1390. Fancy doing

  1391. that?

  1392. It's a

  1393. position of

  1394. submission.

  1395. It's saying,

  1396. I am high

  1397. and you

  1398. are,

  1399. or I am

  1400. low and

  1401. you are

  1402. high.

  1403. I'm at

  1404. your service.

  1405. And they

  1406. also presented

  1407. him with

  1408. gifts,

  1409. gifts that

  1410. were of

  1411. great value,

  1412. treasures.

  1413. They are

  1414. saying,

  1415. you,

  1416. this child,

  1417. are of

  1418. infinite worth.

  1419. My life

  1420. is yours.

  1421. So let's

  1422. come back to

  1423. the question

  1424. again.

  1425. Who is it

  1426. that we

  1427. worship in

  1428. our life?

  1429. Whatever we

  1430. consider to

  1431. be of

  1432. highest value,

  1433. whatever we

  1434. consider to

  1435. be of

  1436. greatest

  1437. honour,

  1438. that's

  1439. who we

  1440. worship.

  1441. That's

  1442. what we

  1443. give our

  1444. life to.

  1445. The

  1446. coming of

  1447. Jesus Christ

  1448. almost 2,000

  1449. years ago

  1450. was certainly

  1451. not a silent

  1452. night,

  1453. nor was it

  1454. all calm

  1455. and bright.

  1456. The coming

  1457. of God's

  1458. promised

  1459. king caused

  1460. a stir

  1461. amongst the

  1462. people.

  1463. Everyone

  1464. had an

  1465. opinion.

  1466. So what

  1467. is our

  1468. response to

  1469. Jesus?

  1470. Does his

  1471. claim disturb

  1472. you?

  1473. That he's

  1474. king of your

  1475. life and

  1476. you're

  1477. answerable to

  1478. him?

  1479. Or perhaps

  1480. the whole

  1481. account leaves

  1482. you just

  1483. completely and

  1484. utterly

  1485. unmoved.

  1486. I'm all

  1487. right,

  1488. Jack.

  1489. I don't

  1490. need Jesus.

  1491. I'm not

  1492. helpless.

  1493. I can do

  1494. life alone.

  1495. Well,

  1496. some people

  1497. were overjoyed.

  1498. Why?

  1499. Well,

  1500. because like

  1501. the Magi,

  1502. they've come

  1503. to see that

  1504. Jesus was

  1505. the one who

  1506. was bringing

  1507. light in

  1508. the darkness.

  1509. He was a

  1510. shepherd full

  1511. of compassion

  1512. who helped

  1513. those who

  1514. were helpless,

  1515. who gave

  1516. life to

  1517. those who

  1518. were harassed,

  1519. a shepherd

  1520. who would

  1521. actually lay

  1522. down his

  1523. life for

  1524. the sheep

  1525. so that

  1526. they could

  1527. have ultimate

  1528. joy and

  1529. life.

  1530. What's our

  1531. response going

  1532. to be to

  1533. this Jesus?

  1534. He deserves

  1535. our worship.

  1536. We can be

  1537. overjoyed

  1538. because in

  1539. him is

  1540. life in

  1541. all its

  1542. fullness.

  1543. Let's

  1544. pray together.

  1545. Amen.

  1546. Father,

  1547. as we

  1548. just reflect

  1549. and think

  1550. of the

  1551. coming of

  1552. Jesus Christ,

  1553. the God-man

  1554. into this

  1555. world,

  1556. we either

  1557. push him

  1558. away

  1559. or we

  1560. welcome him

  1561. in.

  1562. We're

  1563. either

  1564. disturbed,

  1565. unmoved,

  1566. or

  1567. overjoyed.

  1568. Father,

  1569. help us

  1570. to be

  1571. clear about

  1572. that.

  1573. And would

  1574. you give

  1575. us a

  1576. heart that

  1577. is moved

  1578. like the

  1579. Magi,

  1580. and that

  1581. we learn

  1582. to bow

  1583. down before

  1584. you,

  1585. to live

  1586. our life

  1587. in service

  1588. to you,

  1589. to the

  1590. one who

  1591. has given

  1592. us life

  1593. today,

  1594. and life

  1595. for all

  1596. eternity,

  1597. in your

  1598. good and

  1599. perfect

  1600. kingdom.

  1601. Thank you

  1602. that you

  1603. are king,

  1604. and that

  1605. you are

  1606. Lord.

  1607. Help us

  1608. to follow

  1609. you as we

  1610. should.

  1611. In Jesus'

  1612. name.

  1613. Amen.

  1614. Well,

  1615. the Magi

  1616. were

  1617. overjoyed.

  1618. They

  1619. bowed in

  1620. worship.

  1621. Did they

  1622. sing?

  1623. I don't

  1624. know.

  1625. Maybe

  1626. they did.
