  1. 171. So we'll read from verse 25 of chapter 6.

  2. Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear.

  3. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

  4. Look at the birds of the air. They do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

  5. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any of you, by worrying, add a single hour to your life?

  6. And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the fields grow. They do not labour or spin.

  7. Yet I tell you, that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these.

  8. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,

  9. will he not much more clothes you, you of little faith?

  10. So do not worry, saying, what shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or what shall we wear?

  11. For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

  12. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

  13. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.

  14. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

  15. Thank you, Tim.

  16. Thank you, Jonathan.

  17. Let's just pray as we start.

  18. Father, we need your help this morning to clearly understand your commands to us in this passage.

  19. And not only that, but to put them into practice in our lives in this coming year.

  20. Holy Spirit, be our helper now, we pray.

  21. Amen.

  22. Don't worry about your life, Jesus commands.

  23. Now, if ever there was an impossible command to obey from Jesus.

  24. What if I don't get the grades that I need in my exams?

  25. What if I choose the wrong career?

  26. Will there be enough money to pay the bills?

  27. Will my kids stay healthy?

  28. Will I ever get well again?

  29. Will that relationship ever heal?

  30. What do you worry about most when you consider the year ahead?

  31. Well, I think one of the biggest challenges facing us in the coming year is this.

  32. How can I not be consumed by the worries of life when I am surrounded by so many pressures?

  33. And well, the big thing in this passage is that Jesus understands.

  34. He sympathizes with us in our struggles against worry.

  35. After all, he's experienced the pressures of everyday life as a human being.

  36. And as we heard in the last verse there, Jesus acknowledges each day has enough trouble of its own.

  37. He knows there are things in every day that we could and do worry about.

  38. But in this text, he also shows us that we don't have to be consumed by worry.

  39. In fact, he commands us not to worry.

  40. And he gives us lots of reasons why.

  41. Let's dive right in with two of the most basic ones that we see in this passage.

  42. Jesus says, don't worry about your life because worrying distracts us from what really matters.

  43. Look there in verse 25.

  44. He says, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink or about your body, what you will wear.

  45. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothes?

  46. Jesus is reminding us here that if we are trusting in him, we are eternal beings.

  47. This life here on earth is temporary.

  48. Our unending life with resurrected eternal bodies is still to come.

  49. So, don't spend all your time worrying about how to preserve this life and this body as if it's all you have.

  50. It's not.

  51. You have infinitely more, Jesus says.

  52. And don't let the worries of this temporary life distract you from seeing the glory of your best life to come in the new heavens and earth.

  53. That's the first reason.

  54. Here's the second reason not to worry.

  55. Jesus says worrying is a waste of time.

  56. Look in verse 27.

  57. He asks, can any one of you, by worrying, add a single hour to your life?

  58. Well, of course we can't.

  59. Worrying doesn't change anything about your situation.

  60. In fact, it only worsens your ability to handle it.

  61. Modern psychologists have also discovered this, funnily enough.

  62. And they tell us that constant worrying leads to a buildup of the stress hormone cortisol,

  63. which leads to more stress, bad health, bad digestion, inflammation, and so on.

  64. Jesus, as the maker of the human body, knew this before any psychologist.

  65. And he tells us we can do something much better with our time,

  66. which we're going to see later in this passage.

  67. But before he tells us what to do instead of worrying,

  68. Jesus wants us to understand where worrying comes from.

  69. What's the heart issue that actually produces worry?

  70. We're going to read from verse 28, and we're going to find the answer.

  71. So verse 28.

  72. And why do you worry about clothes?

  73. See how the flowers of the field grow.

  74. They do not labor or spin.

  75. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

  76. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field,

  77. which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,

  78. will he not much more clothes you?

  79. You of little faith.

  80. Did you hear that last part?

  81. The base problem lurking underneath the symptom of worry in our lives is

  82. we have little faith in our father's care.

  83. We don't trust our father enough to provide for our needs.

  84. Now, a couple of summers ago, we had a big problem in our utility room.

  85. It stunk.

  86. And I mean it stunk like a sewer.

  87. Now, for a day or two, we tried to ignore it.

  88. Now, that was the denial phase.

  89. It's not really a problem.

  90. But it didn't go away.

  91. So then what we did next to us, we started spraying Febreze, air freshener all over us.

  92. You know, like this.

  93. But obviously that did nothing.

  94. About 20 minutes later, the smell was back.

  95. So we were eventually driven to investigate further and discovered

  96. the smell was coming from this unused pipe behind our big massive fridge.

  97. And that pipe led to the foul drain underneath the path outside.

  98. That's where the smell was coming from.

  99. The smell in the room was a problem.

  100. But actually there was a much bigger problem underground

  101. which we needed to deal with first to solve the bigger problem,

  102. the small problem inside.

  103. Now, how does this world tell us how to deal with worry?

  104. Well, I think the main option is to spray Febreze all over it, right?

  105. A relaxing spa day.

  106. A wild night out in the town.

  107. Or maybe some mindfulness coloring.

  108. Now, all these things may make you forget about your worries for a few hours.

  109. But it's not dealing with the real problem, is it?

  110. It's going to come back.

  111. Now, Jesus says the only way to not be consumed by the worries of this life

  112. is to place your faith over and over again

  113. in your heavenly Father's promise to provide.

  114. Now, the opposite of faith is unbelief in God's promises,

  115. which leads to dependence on yourself for all of life, right?

  116. And that's interesting because the context of this chapter here,

  117. Jesus has just spent it warning us not to build up treasure on earth.

  118. And in the verse just preceding this passage, he says,

  119. don't make money your master.

  120. You know what?

  121. He knows us very well, doesn't he?

  122. Because we all want to build up more and more money.

  123. That's an innate thing inside of us because we never want to be without anything that we need.

  124. And money can get us all the things that we need.

  125. Now, having money is a wonderful gift from God.

  126. And yet, we can so easily fall into the trap of trusting our money

  127. and trusting our own resources to provide our needs

  128. and not trusting in God.

  129. Which in turn leads to all sorts of worry

  130. whenever those resources and that money starts to run low

  131. or is threatened in some way.

  132. So, Jesus' second command in this passage is this.

  133. Rather than placing your faith in your own resources,

  134. have faith in your Father's care.

  135. He will never let you down.

  136. And now, Jesus knows, he knows,

  137. we are not going to buy it first time.

  138. We would much rather to be independent,

  139. self-sufficient, trusting our own resources

  140. rather than in his provision.

  141. We doubt that he really can provide.

  142. So, Jesus gives us two examples from nature

  143. to try and show us that God has both the desire and ability

  144. to meet all of our needs.

  145. So, let's have a look at those in turn.

  146. First example there is in verse 26.

  147. Look at the birds of the air.

  148. They do not sow or reap or store away in barns.

  149. And yet, your Heavenly Father feeds them.

  150. And the second example in verse 28,

  151. which we already read,

  152. is about the flowers of the field

  153. who can't make their own clothes,

  154. and yet, God clothes them.

  155. Now, in both of these examples,

  156. there's a constant.

  157. God delights to provide for those

  158. who cannot provide for themselves.

  159. And so, Jesus asks the very same question

  160. after each example.

  161. He says,

  162. Are you not much more valuable than they?

  163. If God cares for the little robins

  164. and the daisies like this,

  165. how much more will he provide your every need?

  166. You are not a bird or a flower.

  167. You are a precious son or daughter.

  168. How much more does your father desire

  169. to provide your needs

  170. over those of a plant or a flower?

  171. And listen,

  172. when you think about it,

  173. what good father would see his child

  174. in need of food or clothing or money

  175. and not delight to give it to them?

  176. Think about that.

  177. Now, we can struggle

  178. to actually accept that, I think,

  179. because part of us always thinks

  180. that God is distant from us.

  181. He's way up there somewhere in the clouds

  182. and he begrudgingly gives us

  183. what we need when we ask

  184. and nothing more.

  185. And like fearful children

  186. trembling as they approach

  187. the door of their father's study,

  188. not wanting to disturb

  189. and incur their father's wrath,

  190. we sometimes have that perspective

  191. on God our Father.

  192. But I can't find anything in this passage

  193. to suggest a father like that, can you?

  194. Jesus wants us to know

  195. that the Father is near

  196. and is compassionate towards us

  197. and delights to provide

  198. our every need.

  199. He promises to provide each need.

  200. But what about when it looks like he doesn't?

  201. Maybe you've been asking

  202. and asking

  203. and your needs are not being met

  204. as you think best.

  205. Maybe you've had times of wanting

  206. in your life.

  207. Ibrahim, like thousands of others,

  208. has a family in Gaza

  209. this morning who can't get food.

  210. The aid is not getting there fast enough.

  211. Their house is a pile of rubble.

  212. They've moved south

  213. and they've been sheltering

  214. in a church

  215. for two months now.

  216. They're Christians.

  217. Most waking moments

  218. are spent in desperate prayer.

  219. And yet,

  220. as he looks down

  221. at his starving child,

  222. he wonders,

  223. has God broken his promise

  224. to provide for me?

  225. Has God broken his promise

  226. to provide for us

  227. whenever our daily needs

  228. are not met?

  229. What about when God chooses

  230. not to give the house

  231. or heal the sickness

  232. or provide the job in time?

  233. What then?

  234. Well, if we keep following this text,

  235. we will see Jesus' answer

  236. to one of the toughest questions

  237. that we have

  238. as Christians.

  239. So let's keep going

  240. and see.

  241. In verse 31,

  242. Jesus gives his third command.

  243. So, follow with me

  244. from verse 31.

  245. verse 31.

  246. And this is the climax

  247. and summary of Jesus'

  248. whole argument

  249. in this passage.

  250. So we need to listen up here.

  251. It says this,

  252. So do not worry,

  253. saying,

  254. what shall we eat?

  255. What shall we drink?

  256. Or what shall we wear?

  257. For the pagans

  258. run after all these things.

  259. And your heavenly Father

  260. knows that you need them.

  261. But seek first

  262. his kingdom

  263. and his righteousness

  264. and all these things

  265. will be given to you

  266. as well.

  267. Jesus tells us

  268. not to spend our time

  269. worrying about our daily needs

  270. in 2024.

  271. But instead,

  272. to spend our time

  273. seeking first

  274. his kingdom

  275. and his righteousness.

  276. First,

  277. what does it mean

  278. to seek first

  279. God's kingdom?

  280. Well,

  281. if you look back

  282. in chapter 6,

  283. verse 9,

  284. Jesus is teaching

  285. his disciples

  286. how to pray

  287. and we all know this.

  288. It says this,

  289. Our Father in heaven,

  290. hallowed be your name.

  291. Your kingdom come.

  292. Your will be done

  293. on earth

  294. as it is in heaven.

  295. So,

  296. to seek first

  297. God's kingdom

  298. means to seek first

  299. to say to God

  300. each day

  301. in the coming year,

  302. not my will,

  303. but your will be done.

  304. It's about

  305. his good,

  306. loving rule

  307. being worked out

  308. in our lives.

  309. And there are

  310. big implications

  311. of that prayer

  312. every day

  313. in our lives.

  314. Because,

  315. I'm going to be honest,

  316. a lot of the time,

  317. my first concern

  318. is how to build up

  319. my kingdom.

  320. kingdom.

  321. And I'm not focused

  322. on how to build

  323. God's kingdom.

  324. Often,

  325. my top priority

  326. in life

  327. is getting

  328. better financial stability

  329. for myself,

  330. for my family.

  331. Not a bad thing.

  332. But,

  333. Jesus says,

  334. make God's kingdom

  335. your first priority.

  336. even if being

  337. generous

  338. towards church

  339. and mission

  340. is not the most

  341. financially beneficial

  342. option for you.

  343. Maybe your top priority

  344. is being

  345. accepted

  346. among your peers

  347. or your friend group,

  348. blending in

  349. as much as possible.

  350. Well,

  351. Jesus says,

  352. make God's kingdom

  353. your first priority

  354. this year,

  355. even if you lose

  356. the respect

  357. of your peers

  358. because you're

  359. open about your faith.

  360. Maybe for you

  361. the top priority

  362. is having good health.

  363. Not a bad thing

  364. by any means.

  365. A gift from God.

  366. But,

  367. Jesus says,

  368. make God's kingdom

  369. your first priority,

  370. even if serving

  371. leaves you exhausted

  372. on a Sunday afternoon

  373. or a Friday night.

  374. I challenge you,

  375. be honest

  376. with yourself

  377. and write out

  378. a list of your

  379. top priorities

  380. for 2024.

  381. Things that

  382. you spend your time

  383. worrying about happening

  384. in your life.

  385. Genuinely,

  386. do this when you get home.

  387. I've done one for myself

  388. and it was very revealing.

  389. And once you've made out

  390. your list,

  391. bring it to God,

  392. present it to Him

  393. and say,

  394. Father,

  395. these are the things

  396. I'm anxious for

  397. to happen this year,

  398. but how can I seek first

  399. your kingdom

  400. in 2022?

  401. Maybe you could write

  402. down the names

  403. of two people

  404. that you're going

  405. to invest time

  406. in praying for

  407. and meeting.

  408. Or,

  409. one way that you'd like

  410. to serve in church

  411. where you see

  412. there's a need.

  413. Or,

  414. one missionary

  415. you'd like to support

  416. this year,

  417. even if it means

  418. going without something

  419. yourself.

  420. Jesus promises us

  421. that if we invest

  422. our lives

  423. in building

  424. His kingdom,

  425. then He will

  426. provide

  427. our daily needs.

  428. But there's also

  429. a second part

  430. to this command,

  431. isn't there?

  432. It's to seek first

  433. His righteousness.

  434. And earlier

  435. in the Sermon

  436. on the Mount,

  437. Jesus said

  438. in chapter 5,

  439. verse 6,

  440. He said,

  441. Blessed are those

  442. who hunger

  443. and thirst

  444. for righteousness,

  445. for they

  446. will be filled.

  447. So rather than

  448. spending all our time

  449. running after

  450. our daily needs,

  451. Jesus says,

  452. hunger and thirst

  453. after righteousness.

  454. Which means,

  455. invest your time

  456. in becoming

  457. more like Jesus.

  458. Long for growth

  459. in godliness.

  460. Is that a top

  461. priority for you

  462. in 2024?

  463. I cannot honestly

  464. say it was on

  465. my initial list

  466. that I wrote out.

  467. But Jesus says,

  468. make it a priority.

  469. So how is it

  470. going to happen

  471. for you?

  472. Well,

  473. some suggestions.

  474. Set a daily

  475. time with the Lord

  476. where you will

  477. meet with Him

  478. to hear from

  479. His Word

  480. and spend time

  481. in personal

  482. worship of Him.

  483. Or you can set

  484. a target for

  485. three or four

  486. good Christian books

  487. that you could read

  488. this year.

  489. And if you don't

  490. know which ones

  491. to read,

  492. maybe have a chat

  493. with the elders

  494. and they could

  495. give you some

  496. recommendations.

  497. Or maybe you

  498. could ask a

  499. brother or sister

  500. in the body

  501. to meet with

  502. you regularly

  503. for encouragement

  504. and prayer.

  505. Seek first

  506. His kingdom

  507. and His

  508. righteousness.

  509. And all

  510. these things

  511. will be given

  512. to you as well.

  513. Yes,

  514. Jesus promises

  515. to provide

  516. all of our

  517. needs

  518. whenever we

  519. are seeking

  520. first His

  521. kingdom

  522. and His

  523. righteousness.

  524. And this

  525. does bring us

  526. back to the

  527. question,

  528. the big

  529. question,

  530. that we raised

  531. earlier,

  532. doesn't it?

  533. What about

  534. when our

  535. daily needs

  536. for food,

  537. health,

  538. shelter,

  539. money,

  540. are not met?

  541. Does that mean

  542. the Father

  543. has broken

  544. His promise

  545. to provide?

  546. God

  547. will

  548. have to

  549. need to

  550. ask here

  551. is,

  552. what do we

  553. really most

  554. need?

  555. Think about it.

  556. Because of our

  557. fallen nature,

  558. our bodies

  559. naturally decay

  560. and die.

  561. And there's

  562. nothing we can

  563. do to stop

  564. it.

  565. So what we

  566. ultimately need

  567. is something

  568. more than

  569. food,

  570. good health,

  571. a good house,

  572. a comfortable

  573. wage,

  574. while we're

  575. here on

  576. earth,

  577. right?

  578. These are

  579. good things

  580. which God

  581. may well

  582. graciously

  583. provide us

  584. for a time,

  585. but they're

  586. not what we

  587. ultimately need

  588. for eternity.

  589. What we

  590. actually need

  591. is Jesus,

  592. His presence

  593. and His

  594. provision

  595. forever.

  596. Turn with me

  597. please to

  598. Revelation

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  599. chapter 7

  600. and you'll

  601. see what I

  602. mean.

  603. Revelation,

  604. the last

  605. book in the

  606. Bible,

  607. chapter 7,

  608. it's on page

  609. 1,238.

  610. And in

  611. John's

  612. vision here,

  613. we're going

  614. to get a

  615. glimpse of

  616. what God's

  617. kingdom looks

  618. like in

  619. its fully

  620. realized sense

  621. at the end

  622. of time.

  623. If we are

  624. trusting in

  625. Christ,

  626. we are a

  627. part of

  628. God's

  629. kingdom right

  630. now.

  631. It is

  632. here,

  633. and yet

  634. Jesus also

  635. says it's

  636. still to

  637. come in

  638. its fullest

  639. sense in

  640. the new

  641. heavens and

  642. earth.

  643. And that's

  644. what John

  645. sees in

  646. his vision,

  647. which we're

  648. going to

  649. read now.

  650. We're going

  651. to read

  652. from verse

  653. 13.

  654. Then one

  655. of the

  656. elders asked

  657. me,

  658. these in

  659. white robes,

  660. who are

  661. they?

  662. Where do

  663. they come

  664. from?

  665. I

  666. answered,

  667. sir,

  668. you know.

  669. And he

  670. said,

  671. these are

  672. they who

  673. have come

  674. out of

  675. the great

  676. tribulation.

  677. They have

  678. washed their

  679. robes and

  680. made them

  681. white in

  682. the blood

  683. of the

  684. lamb.

  685. Therefore

  686. they are

  687. before the

  688. throne of

  689. God and

  690. serve him

  691. day and

  692. night in

  693. his temple,

  694. and he

  695. who sits

  696. on the

  697. throne will

  698. shelter

  699. them with

  700. his presence.

  701. Never

  702. again will

  703. they hunger,

  704. never again

  705. will they

  706. thirst.

  707. The sun

  708. will not

  709. beat down

  710. on them,

  711. nor any

  712. scorching heat,

  713. for the

  714. lamb at

  715. the center

  716. of the

  717. throne will

  718. be their

  719. shepherd.

  720. He will

  721. lead them to

  722. springs of

  723. living water,

  724. and God

  725. will wipe

  726. away every

  727. tear from

  728. their eyes.

  729. How amazing

  730. is that?

  731. Jesus can

  732. promise all

  733. our needs

  734. will be

  735. met,

  736. because

  737. ultimately

  738. he himself

  739. will meet

  740. them in

  741. heaven.

  742. And that's

  743. a promise

  744. that we can

  745. build our

  746. lives on.

  747. And that's

  748. as true for

  749. Ibrahim and

  750. his family in

  751. Gaza this

  752. morning as

  753. it's true

  754. for us

  755. in

  756. Carragaline.

  757. And that

  758. releases us

  759. from the

  760. need to

  761. spend our

  762. lives worrying

  763. about our

  764. present needs

  765. not being

  766. met.

  767. Because

  768. we are

  769. guaranteed

  770. unending

  771. years of

  772. Jesus'

  773. total

  774. provision

  775. in heaven.

  776. You know

  777. what?

  778. In this

  779. coming year

  780. we can

  781. ask our

  782. good and

  783. gracious

  784. father to

  785. provide our

  786. every need

  787. day to

  788. day.

  789. But

  790. remember

  791. when he

  792. chooses not

  793. to provide

  794. for a

  795. certain need

  796. that we've

  797. asked for

  798. he has

  799. already

  800. prepared a

  801. place for

  802. you in

  803. heaven where

  804. you will

  805. want and

  806. hunger no

  807. more or

  808. your body

  809. will not

  810. get sick

  811. or tired.

  812. that is

  813. your future

  814. in Christ.

  815. So in

  816. conclusion

  817. our dearly

  818. beloved

  819. children of

  820. the king

  821. don't be

  822. consumed by

  823. worry this

  824. year.

  825. Jesus has

  826. commanded us

  827. not to worry

  828. and he has

  829. promised to

  830. provide our

  831. every need

  832. and he

  833. has instructed

  834. us to

  835. seek first

  836. his kingdom

  837. and his

  838. righteousness

  839. above every

  840. other

  841. priority.

  842. So have

  843. faith in

  844. your father's

  845. care for

  846. you in

  847. 2024

  848. and spend

  849. it well

  850. seeking first

  851. his kingdom

  852. and his

  853. righteousness

  854. knowing

  855. that he

  856. will

  857. provide.

  858. Let's

  859. pray.

  860. Jesus

  861. we thank

  862. you for

  863. your words

  864. of comfort

  865. to us

  866. in our

  867. worries.

  868. We trust

  869. you father

  870. with our

  871. every need

  872. in this

  873. coming year.

  874. you know

  875. each one.

  876. Save us

  877. from being

  878. consumed

  879. by worry

  880. and help

  881. us to

  882. trust in

  883. your care

  884. instead.

  885. Holy Spirit

  886. bring to

  887. our minds

  888. these precious

  889. promises

  890. time and

  891. time again

  892. so that we

  893. can live

  894. with confidence

  895. in our

  896. father's

  897. care

  898. and seek

  899. first

  900. his kingdom

  901. and his

  902. righteousness.

  903. it's in

  904. Jesus name

  905. that we

  906. ask it.

  907. Amen.

  908. Well we

  909. are going to

  910. sing our

  911. last song

  912. now.
