  1. Well, let's turn in our Bibles to Psalm 126.

  2. Psalm 126.

  3. So I wish you a joy-filled coming year.

  4. A joy-filled coming year.

  5. Is it possible that we could be joy-filled?

  6. Well, yes, we can.

  7. We're going to find out how as we read Psalm 126.

  8. Let's read together.

  9. When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed.

  10. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy.

  11. Then it was said among the nations, the Lord has done great things for them.

  12. The Lord has done great things for us.

  13. And we are filled with joy.

  14. Restore our fortunes, Lord, like streams in the Negev.

  15. Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.

  16. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.

  17. Short psalm, but a great psalm.

  18. Let's pray and ask for God's help as we look at this together.

  19. Let's pray.

  20. Father, thank you that you are present with us.

  21. We cannot see you physically, but you are here by your Holy Spirit.

  22. And you are here through your word as we look at it together.

  23. Father, and we pray that by your Spirit you would take your word and speak into our lives today.

  24. Restore our fortunes so that we are filled with joy.

  25. That's our prayer.

  26. And we ask that you will do it.

  27. Amen.

  28. Amen.

  29. Well, have any of you ever seen The Repair Shop?

  30. Any of you seen that?

  31. It's a program on TV where people bring in their broken items to get repaired.

  32. It could be a chair, it could be a record player, a toy or a game.

  33. Something that has great emotional value to the person.

  34. And at the beginning of the program, we see the guests bring their broken item, a watch or whatever it is that belonged to their great, great, great, great grandmother.

  35. And by the end of the program, they receive the fully repaired and restored item.

  36. And the response of the guest is always one of wonder and delight.

  37. As their repaired item is revealed to them, as the cover is pulled away, they are stunned and amazed that something broken could be restored.

  38. There are tears of joy.

  39. Well, wonderfully, God is in the business of restoration.

  40. And it always leads to songs of joy.

  41. Look at verse 1 with me.

  42. When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion.

  43. Verse 2.

  44. We were filled with songs of joy.

  45. Verse 4.

  46. Restore our fortunes.

  47. Verse 5.

  48. And there will be songs of joy.

  49. You see, this is what God is doing for us.

  50. He restores broken lives and fills us with songs of joy.

  51. And this ultimately happens through the gospel, the good news about the Lord Jesus Christ.

  52. So as we venture into Psalm 126, we do so at the end of one year and facing into another year.

  53. So what we're going to do is we're going to look back with joy at God's restoration.

  54. And we're going to look forward in joy with God's restoration.

  55. A looking back and a looking forward.

  56. So first of all, let's look back with joy.

  57. Verse 2.

  58. Our mouths were filled with laughter and our tongues with songs of joy.

  59. Imagine a room full of laughter and joy.

  60. Why?

  61. What's the cause here of such delight?

  62. Well, we know, don't we?

  63. Look at verse 1.

  64. When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion.

  65. This is taking us back.

  66. God's people are looking back to the salvation that God did in their lives.

  67. It could be when God rescued his people from Egypt.

  68. Or it could be when God returned his people from exile.

  69. The slavery in Egypt, the separation in exile, were both desperate situations.

  70. It seemed utterly hopeless and dark.

  71. But yet God intervened and restored them.

  72. End of verse 1.

  73. We were like those who dreamed.

  74. The restoration that God brought about was only a distant thought.

  75. But amazingly, it became a reality.

  76. You see, this is the kind of God we have.

  77. He's a restoring God.

  78. Have a look back with me to Psalm 107.

  79. It's where we started this morning.

  80. Psalm 107.

  81. This psalm is a collection of stories of how God restores.

  82. How God intervenes and saves.

  83. So look at verse 2.

  84. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story.

  85. Well, what is their story?

  86. Well, let's have a look.

  87. Verse 4.

  88. Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle.

  89. Verse 6.

  90. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.

  91. Or look at verse 10.

  92. Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains.

  93. Verse 13.

  94. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.

  95. Or verse 17.

  96. Some became fools through their rebellious ways, and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.

  97. Verse 19.

  98. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and yes, he saved them from their distress.

  99. You see, God is a restoring God.

  100. He saves, he rescues his people.

  101. Well, let's go back to Psalm 126.

  102. Now, the point of all these restoration stories is, this is God's work.

  103. God has intervened.

  104. His acts of salvation have been clearly seen, and it's evident by the nations.

  105. Look at the end of verse 2.

  106. It was said among the nations, as they looked on at what God has done.

  107. The Lord has done great things for them, for his people.

  108. And the people themselves, well, they could say in verse 3, the Lord has done great things for us.

  109. You see, salvation is always a work of God.

  110. It's not 50-50, you do your bit, and God will make up the rest.

  111. No, it's always 100% God.

  112. It is salvation is an intervention by God when we're no longer longing or desiring.

  113. It's a God initiative when we have no means or no ability within ourselves.

  114. God restores and God acts.

  115. Now, God's acts of salvation, as we've seen, have been many and varied.

  116. But the point of all of these stories throughout the Old Testament is to point us to Christ, who ultimately saves.

  117. One writer put it like this.

  118. The Bible is not a series of disconnected stories.

  119. It is a single narrative in which every story, every character, and every act points beyond itself to one who is greater.

  120. That is, Jesus Christ.

  121. So the story of God rescuing his people from slavery in Egypt points us to Jesus, who has come to rescue us from a greater slavery, or slavery to sin.

  122. The account of God returning his people who are in exile back to their own land points us to Jesus, who brings us back into relationship with him,

  123. and into a kingdom that will last forever and ever.

  124. The restoration that God's people who are in exile back to their own land points us to Jesus.

  125. I want us to encourage us to look back with joy.

  126. Here's two ways we can do this.

  127. Here's the first one.

  128. Remembering our big salvation story.

  129. So retell the story to yourself.

  130. If you are a Christian here this morning, look back to that time in life when God intervened into the mess and brokenness of your life and restored you.

  131. Do you remember it?

  132. How he forgave you of all your sin, past, present, and future, never to hold it against you?

  133. Do you remember how he loved you?

  134. Do you remember how he loved you and embraced you and welcomed you as a son and daughter into his family?

  135. Look back and remember the moment you realized Jesus is my saviour.

  136. Be filled with joy at the big salvation story.

  137. But also remember and look back to the smaller stories of salvation.

  138. You see, while we may have a big story of being saved by Jesus, there are many mini stories too, aren't there?

  139. Like the stories we read in Psalm 107.

  140. Maybe you were wandering in that desert-like wasteland, empty, unfulfilled.

  141. Or perhaps you were like that person who was in deep darkness.

  142. No hope, no light.

  143. Or maybe it was just through our plain old foolish sinful self and we found ourselves lost and broken.

  144. But whatever experience we have been through, God remained faithful to you.

  145. He heard your cry of trouble and in your distress, he saved you.

  146. He restored your life.

  147. You see, when God saves you, he will keep you.

  148. He is the faithful, loyal, and steadfast God.

  149. So look back with joy in what God has done for you.

  150. Now maybe you're here this morning, but you're thinking,

  151. well, I don't have a salvation story.

  152. I haven't experienced that.

  153. Well, you know what?

  154. You can, right here, right now,

  155. by simply trusting Jesus with your life,

  156. you can be restored to God.

  157. He will give you a new beginning and a fresh start.

  158. He will walk with you in your times of trials.

  159. He will be with you in your seasons of struggle.

  160. Those that God saves, he will keep.

  161. He will never, ever let you go.

  162. No matter your sin, your suffering, or Satan,

  163. he will hold you.

  164. And so you too can say these words in verse 3.

  165. The Lord has done great things for me.

  166. And I am filled with joy.

  167. So can we look back together?

  168. Look back in the past,

  169. at the big salvation story,

  170. and all the many little ways God has been keeping you in your life.

  171. Second,

  172. looking down without joy.

  173. You see, we may be and have experienced joy in the past,

  174. but that's not how I would describe my life today.

  175. Perhaps you're thinking,

  176. when I look at my life at this very moment,

  177. it's joyless.

  178. Because that seems to be the experience of the writer.

  179. Something is happening between verses 3 and 4.

  180. We're not told,

  181. but it's clear, isn't it?

  182. Because verse 3 ends with joy, doesn't it?

  183. We're filled with joy.

  184. But then verse 4,

  185. there's an absence of joy.

  186. All is not right.

  187. He's having to cry out again,

  188. verse 4,

  189. Restore our fortunes, Lord.

  190. It's like the joy is gone.

  191. In fact, as we read on in the remaining verses,

  192. there's tears and weeping.

  193. Their life is like a farmer

  194. who's longing and waiting for a turn of fortunes.

  195. He's sowing in tears,

  196. going out weeping.

  197. They're doing the right things,

  198. but nothing seems to be changing.

  199. Isn't that how life can feel?

  200. Maybe that's where you are right now,

  201. today.

  202. You've trusted God in the past.

  203. You've been serving God.

  204. You've been faithful.

  205. But the past was great.

  206. But today,

  207. this week,

  208. this year,

  209. it's been hard.

  210. It's tough.

  211. And there are no songs of joy.

  212. You see,

  213. we live in a broken world,

  214. don't we?

  215. And some days,

  216. that brokenness

  217. is all too real.

  218. A loved one dies.

  219. A relationship breaks.

  220. A friend lets you down.

  221. You receive that unwanted diagnosis

  222. from the doctor.

  223. Your plans for the future

  224. are all shattered.

  225. You fail

  226. and you fall again.

  227. Today,

  228. there are no songs of joy.

  229. Today,

  230. it's tears

  231. and weeping.

  232. Is that it?

  233. Is that the life

  234. that I am to expect?

  235. The past was great.

  236. But today,

  237. what's going to happen?

  238. Is this it?

  239. Well,

  240. the answer

  241. is both a yes

  242. and a no.

  243. There will be tears

  244. and there will be joy.

  245. Third,

  246. looking forward

  247. with joy.

  248. You see,

  249. amidst the suffering

  250. and the pain,

  251. there is a promise,

  252. isn't there?

  253. Look at verses 5 and 6.

  254. The people will

  255. reap with songs of joy.

  256. They will,

  257. verse 6,

  258. return

  259. with songs of joy.

  260. How?

  261. Where,

  262. where does all this joy

  263. come from?

  264. Well,

  265. verse 4

  266. gives us the answer.

  267. It's a prayer.

  268. Unless,

  269. sorry,

  270. verse 4,

  271. restore our fortunes,

  272. Lord,

  273. like streams

  274. in the Negev.

  275. They're praying

  276. to God.

  277. Having looked back

  278. at how God

  279. had restored

  280. in the past,

  281. the people are now

  282. crying out to God

  283. to intervene again

  284. and bring

  285. his salvation.

  286. Just as you

  287. restored us

  288. in the past,

  289. restore us again

  290. today

  291. like streams

  292. in the Negev.

  293. Well,

  294. what's the Negev?

  295. I've never been there.

  296. Well,

  297. the Negev

  298. was a dry wilderness,

  299. barren

  300. and desert-like.

  301. No life,

  302. no growth.

  303. However,

  304. heavy rains

  305. in the distant mountains

  306. would cause

  307. flash flooding

  308. on the barren

  309. plains below.

  310. Dry riverbeds

  311. would suddenly

  312. become full

  313. and an overflowing river.

  314. Overnight,

  315. dormant seeds

  316. are nourished

  317. and within

  318. 24 hours,

  319. lush green plants

  320. and flowers

  321. sprout up

  322. all along

  323. the river course.

  324. And you can watch this

  325. on YouTube,

  326. by the way.

  327. Go and look it up.

  328. Not now,

  329. later.

  330. What was barren

  331. has now

  332. automatically,

  333. instantly

  334. been filled

  335. with life

  336. as the river

  337. comes cascading

  338. through.

  339. It's restored.

  340. It's like a new

  341. creation.

  342. Well,

  343. just as the rivers

  344. flow and bring

  345. life,

  346. so the cry

  347. goes up to God

  348. once again

  349. to bring

  350. restoration,

  351. to bring

  352. his salvation.

  353. Ultimately,

  354. it's a prayer

  355. for God's people

  356. as we live

  357. in a broken

  358. world.

  359. We long

  360. for God

  361. to come

  362. again

  363. and to

  364. restore

  365. our fortunes.

  366. We long

  367. for the day

  368. when God

  369. will burst

  370. forth like

  371. a mighty

  372. river,

  373. bringing life

  374. in all its

  375. glorious abundance.

  376. We long

  377. for the tears

  378. to be replaced

  379. with laughter,

  380. the sound

  381. of weeping

  382. with songs

  383. of joy.

  384. Restore

  385. our fortunes,

  386. Lord,

  387. like streams

  388. in the

  389. Negev.

  390. Well,

  391. there is

  392. a promised

  393. joy,

  394. isn't there?

  395. Through the

  396. blur of our

  397. tears

  398. and through

  399. the pain

  400. of our

  401. weeping,

  402. let's not

  403. lose sight

  404. of God's

  405. promise.

  406. Look at

  407. verse 5.

  408. Those who

  409. sow with

  410. tears

  411. will

  412. reap

  413. with songs

  414. of joy.

  415. Those who

  416. go out

  417. weeping,

  418. carrying

  419. seed to

  420. sow,

  421. will

  422. return

  423. with songs

  424. of joy,

  425. carrying

  426. sheaves

  427. with them.

  428. Here

  429. is the

  430. promise

  431. of God's

  432. full

  433. and complete

  434. salvation,

  435. the ultimate

  436. restoration

  437. we

  438. long

  439. for.

  440. It

  441. will be

  442. like

  443. harvest

  444. time,

  445. where

  446. everything

  447. is

  448. ripe

  449. and full

  450. and there's

  451. fruitfulness.

  452. It's

  453. then that

  454. all sorrow

  455. will cease

  456. and there

  457. will be

  458. songs of

  459. joy

  460. forevermore.

  461. How can

  462. we be so

  463. sure of

  464. this?

  465. Well,

  466. come with

  467. me please

  468. to John's

  469. Gospel.

  470. You can

  471. keep your

  472. finger in

  473. one,

  474. two,

  475. six,

  476. and we'll

  477. go to

  478. John's

  479. Gospel in

  480. the New

  481. Testament,

  482. Matthew,

  483. Mark,

  484. Luke,

  485. John.

  486. John

    John 16 chapter mention

  487. chapter

  488. 16.

  489. Here

  490. Jesus is

  491. speaking with

  492. his

  493. disciples

  494. about

  495. his

  496. soon

  497. death

  498. to come

  499. and his

  500. resurrection

  501. that will

  502. take place

  503. after.

  504. And with

  505. his

  506. disciples he

  507. speaks these

  508. words starting

  509. in verse

  510. 20.

  511. Very

  512. truly I

  513. tell you,

  514. you will

  515. weep and

  516. mourn while

  517. the world

  518. rejoices.

  519. You will

  520. grieve,

  521. but your

  522. grief will

  523. turn to

  524. joy.

  525. A woman

  526. giving birth

  527. to a child

  528. has pain

  529. because her

  530. time has

  531. come.

  532. but when

  533. her baby

  534. is born

  535. she forgets

  536. the anguish

  537. because of

  538. her joy

  539. that a

  540. child is

  541. born into

  542. the world.

  543. So with

  544. you,

  545. now is

  546. your time

  547. of grief,

  548. but I

  549. will see

  550. you again

  551. and you

  552. will rejoice

  553. and no

  554. one will

  555. take away

  556. your joy.

  557. Jesus' promise

  558. here is

  559. not just

  560. for the

  561. disciples

  562. but for

  563. all his

  564. people who

  565. trust him.

  566. You see,

  567. through the

  568. death of

  569. Jesus,

  570. our

  571. rebellion

  572. was dealt

  573. with and

  574. there was

  575. the joy

  576. of the

  577. forgiveness

  578. of all

  579. of our

  580. sin.

  581. But more

  582. than that,

  583. through the

  584. resurrection of

  585. Jesus,

  586. death is

  587. defeated once

  588. and for

  589. all and

  590. there is

  591. the joy

  592. of eternal

  593. life.

  594. But above

  595. all of

  596. these things,

  597. one day

  598. the risen

  599. Jesus will

  600. return and

  601. he will

  602. end all

  603. grief and

  604. he will

  605. wipe away

  606. your every

  607. tear and

  608. fill your

  609. hearts with

  610. joy.

  611. Look at

  612. verse 22

  613. again.

  614. So with

  615. you,

  616. now is

  617. your time

  618. of grief,

  619. but I

  620. will see

  621. you again

  622. and you

  623. will rejoice

  624. and no

  625. one will

  626. take away

  627. your joy.

  628. Let's go

  629. back to

  630. Psalm 126.

  631. So there

  632. is the

  633. promised

  634. joy.

  635. And in

  636. the meantime,

  637. there's

  638. patient

  639. waiting,

  640. isn't

  641. there?

  642. Jesus is

  643. coming,

  644. hallelujah.

  645. But what

  646. about now?

  647. What do we

  648. do today as

  649. we wait?

  650. well, we

  651. have the

  652. joy of

  653. forgiveness,

  654. the joy

  655. of a

  656. relationship

  657. with God,

  658. the joy

  659. of an

  660. eternal

  661. future to

  662. come,

  663. the joy

  664. of one

  665. another here

  666. today.

  667. And

  668. together we

  669. get on

  670. with the

  671. task of

  672. sharing this

  673. gospel hope

  674. with a

  675. broken

  676. world.

  677. Look at

  678. verse 5.

  679. the

  680. picture is

  681. agricultural.

  682. The farmer

  683. goes out

  684. to sow

  685. his seed,

  686. carrying

  687. his seed,

  688. and is

  689. patiently

  690. waiting.

  691. Sometimes,

  692. well,

  693. sometimes the

  694. crop can

  695. fail.

  696. Maybe it

  697. gets diseased,

  698. perhaps there's

  699. no rain.

  700. The work is

  701. repeated,

  702. and so the

  703. farmer must

  704. go again,

  705. more sowing,

  706. more carrying,

  707. longing,

  708. waiting.

  709. Through the

  710. tears,

  711. and through

  712. the weeping,

  713. he goes

  714. again,

  715. and again.

  716. It's a

  717. picture of

  718. the church,

  719. isn't it?

  720. As we get

  721. on with the

  722. task of

  723. sharing the

  724. gospel hope,

  725. we faithfully

  726. sow the

  727. seed.

  728. We share

  729. the gospel

  730. story of

  731. God's

  732. restoration,

  733. and we

  734. pray for

  735. God to

  736. act,

  737. that he

  738. would come

  739. like a

  740. mighty

  741. river,

  742. longing,

  743. and waiting,

  744. tears,

  745. and weeping.

  746. You pray

  747. for a

  748. friend,

  749. months and

  750. years pass

  751. by.

  752. You serve

  753. in the

  754. ministry of

  755. a church

  756. every week,

  757. every term,

  758. but for

  759. all the

  760. hard work,

  761. there comes

  762. at times

  763. disappointment,

  764. rejection,

  765. loneliness.

  766. We sow

  767. with tears,

  768. we go out

  769. weeping,

  770. we long for

  771. the barren

  772. wastelands to

  773. be filled with

  774. life.

  775. Well,

  776. one day,

  777. the longing

  778. and the

  779. waiting will

  780. be over.

  781. Look at

  782. verse 5.

  783. Those who

  784. sow with

  785. tears

  786. will reap

  787. with songs

  788. of joy.

  789. Those who

  790. go out

  791. weeping,

  792. carrying seed

  793. to sow,

  794. will return

  795. with songs

  796. of joy,

  797. carrying sheaves

  798. with them.

  799. one day

  800. the Lord

  801. will return

  802. and as

  803. he gathers

  804. all God's

  805. people,

  806. on that

  807. great day

  808. we will

  809. see the

  810. harvest

  811. in all

  812. its fullness,

  813. more than

  814. we could

  815. ever expect

  816. or imagine.

  817. And we

  818. will celebrate

  819. God's

  820. restoration.

  821. Tears

  822. and weeping

  823. will become

  824. songs

  825. of joy.

  826. And so

  827. as we

  828. sit

  829. between

  830. the end

  831. of one

  832. year

  833. and the

  834. start

  835. of a

  836. new

  837. year,

  838. as we

  839. face

  840. today

  841. with all

  842. its

  843. struggles

  844. and all

  845. its

  846. pressures,

  847. I invite

  848. us all

  849. to look

  850. back

  851. on 2023

  852. and rejoice

  853. in God's

  854. salvation

  855. in your

  856. life and

  857. how he

  858. has saved

  859. you and

  860. how he

  861. has kept

  862. you.

  863. He has

  864. been faithful

  865. and I

  866. want us

  867. to look

  868. forward to

  869. 2024

  870. and rejoice

  871. in what

  872. God is

  873. doing.

  874. The numbers

  875. may be

  876. small in

  877. those who

  878. respond,

  879. but God

  880. is doing

  881. his work

  882. and we

  883. look forward

  884. to the

  885. ultimate

  886. day

  887. when we

  888. will carry

  889. in sheaves

  890. many

  891. people.

  892. Together,

  893. today we

  894. pray,

  895. we

  896. sow

  897. and we

  898. wait.

  899. Joy

  900. is

  901. coming.

  902. Let's

  903. pray.

  904. Father,

  905. thank you.

  906. Thank you

  907. for intervening

  908. into our

  909. life.

  910. Thank you

  911. for rescuing

  912. us,

  913. restoring us

  914. and saving

  915. us,

  916. for the

  917. joy of

  918. salvation

  919. today.

  920. Thank you

  921. for the

  922. many,

  923. many times

  924. you have

  925. intervened

  926. in our

  927. life,

  928. how you

  929. keep us,

  930. how you

  931. are faithful,

  932. and help

  933. us now

  934. together as

  935. your people,

  936. as your

  937. church,

  938. as we

  939. go forward

  940. to a

  941. new year,

  942. to trust

  943. your great

  944. promises,

  945. that you

  946. will do

  947. your work

  948. as we

  949. sow.

  950. Help us

  951. never to

  952. tire from

  953. doing the

  954. gospel work

  955. that you

  956. have called

  957. us to,

  958. in the

  959. glorious hope

  960. and knowledge,

  961. that we

  962. will reap

  963. with songs

  964. of joy,

  965. we will

  966. see a

  967. harvest to

  968. come.

  969. So bless

  970. us,

  971. Father,

  972. do your

  973. work amongst

  974. us,

  975. and we

  976. ask this

  977. for your

  978. glory,

  979. and the

  980. fame of

  981. your name.

  982. Amen.

  983. Well,

  984. we're going

  985. to sing,

  986. sing a

  987. song of

  988. joy.

  989. What is

  990. our hope

  991. in life

  992. and death?

  993. Yes,

  994. it's true,

  995. we do

  996. have an

  997. eternal

  998. hope.
