  1. This is the account of Noah and his family.

  2. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time,

  3. and he walked faithfully with God.

  4. Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Jepheth.

  5. Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence.

  6. God saw how corrupt the earth had become,

  7. for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.

  8. So God said to Noah,

  9. I am going to put an end to all people,

  10. for the earth is filled with violence because of them.

  11. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.

  12. So make yourself an ark of cypress wood.

  13. Make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.

  14. This is how you are to build it.

  15. The ark is to be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.

  16. Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening,

  17. one cubit high all around.

  18. Put a door on the side of the ark and make lower, middle, and upper decks.

  19. I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens,

  20. every creature that has breath of life in it.

  21. Everything on earth will perish.

  22. But I will establish my covenant with you,

  23. and you will enter the ark,

  24. you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you.

  25. You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures,

  26. male and female, to keep them alive with you.

  27. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal,

  28. and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground

  29. will come to you to be kept alive.

  30. You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten

  31. and store it away as food for you and for them.

  32. Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

  33. The Lord then said to Noah,

  34. Go into the ark, you and your whole family,

  35. because I have found you righteous in this generation.

  36. Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal,

  37. a male and its mate,

  38. and one pair of every kind of unclean animal,

  39. a male and its mate,

  40. and also seven pairs of every kind of bird,

  41. male and female,

  42. to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth.

  43. Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth

  44. for forty days and forty nights,

  45. and I will wipe from the face of the earth

  46. every living creature I have made.

  47. And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.

  48. This is the word of the Lord.

  49. Thanks, Craig.

  50. Let's just pray as we come to God's word

  51. and ask him to bless all that's said,

  52. and all that we're reading

  53. and we hear from him.

  54. Let's pray.

  55. Lord, we know you're the one who speaks these words.

  56. You're the one who has given us these words

  57. to help us to understand who you are.

  58. And I pray, Lord, that in this incredible passage

  59. that we would see your care,

  60. your goodness,

  61. your grace,

  62. and that we'd understand more of you today.

  63. In Jesus' name.

  64. Amen.

  65. So we can't cover every aspect of this passage,

  66. but just to come at it from a particular angle today

  67. and help us to see God's care.

  68. If you made the trip to Cove in East Cork,

  69. you can visit a Titanic exhibition.

  70. And you can be allocated a person randomly

  71. who sailed on that ship from Cove.

  72. And you can find out at the end,

  73. did you survive or did you not?

  74. And of course,

  75. there's also an impressive exhibition in Belfast.

  76. And you can learn about the various classes of people

  77. on board and the characters who sailed on the great ship.

  78. And you can find out about how the ship sank.

  79. You can think with a morbid wonder, maybe,

  80. what was it like on those lifeboats.

  81. And you can learn about the characters and the aftermath.

  82. And I think there was investigations in New York and London.

  83. I'm not sure how many of you remember them.

  84. But you can even stand in one area in Belfast.

  85. And you can see this glass floor.

  86. And you look through the bottom.

  87. And you see the ship as it is now.

  88. As though you've gone down.

  89. And you see where it is on the floor, the wreckage.

  90. But one of the things you'll notice is how plush this ship was.

  91. It was a ship like no other.

  92. In its time, it was beyond anything ever seen before.

  93. And the wonder of the first class cabins.

  94. It was a modern vessel.

  95. And you think, you know, turn of the century.

  96. It was 1912 after all.

  97. Funny how we do that with dates, isn't it?

  98. Funny how we say, oh, it's shocking.

  99. This is 2024, actually, after all.

  100. And we're not living in 1990, you know.

  101. And probably arrogance.

  102. When we might be embarrassed in five years

  103. about how we were today.

  104. It was a modern ship.

  105. And it was 1912.

  106. Another vessel that was built in the modern age at the time.

  107. We read about in Genesis 6.

  108. Noah was asked to build an ark.

  109. And there was a great deal of detail about this ark.

  110. It was full of instruction as to how to build this ark.

  111. Chapter 6, verse 14.

  112. It was to be made of cypress wood

  113. and made waterproof with pitch.

  114. This was standard in the ancient world,

  115. but there was nothing standard

  116. about this boat that was to be built.

  117. It was something else again.

  118. Completely out of the ordinary

  119. and unique in that time.

  120. Make rooms in it.

  121. Verse 14.

  122. It's just there, like we always say in Scripture.

  123. Scripture often does that.

  124. It says something matter of fact.

  125. Matter of fact.

  126. Make rooms in it.

  127. Someone has written these words.

  128. Prior to the invention of seaworthy vessels,

  129. which could carry sailors and cargo

  130. through the heavy seas of the Mediterranean,

  131. most boats were made of skin or reeds

  132. and were designed to sail through marshes

  133. or along the river bank.

  134. They were used for fishing or hunting

  135. and would not have been more than 10 feet in length.

  136. True sailing ships with a length of 170 feet

  137. are first depicted in Old Kingdom Egyptian art

  138. about 2500 BC

  139. and are described in Ugaritic and Phoenician texts

  140. 1600 to 1200 BC.

  141. Even this late,

  142. they still generally navigated within sight of land

  143. with trips to Greece, Cyprus,

  144. as well as ports along the coasts of Egypt,

  145. the Persian Gulf and Asia Minor.

  146. Noah's boat was a boat like no other.

  147. Again, the detail goes to the dimensions,

  148. which are seemingly quite easy to determine

  149. along with the shape.

  150. 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, 45 feet deep,

  151. one and a half football pitches.

  152. Don't get bogged down on what type of football.

  153. Verse 16 talks of a roof.

  154. It's a bit unclear in the translations.

  155. The word roof appears only in the Hebrew Bible,

  156. translated as window, skylight, vaulted roof,

  157. peripheral window.

  158. Then God explains what will happen in verse 17.

  159. I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth

  160. to destroy all life under the heavens.

  161. Every creature that has the breath of life in it,

  162. everything on earth will perish.

  163. And people say, what kind of God is this?

  164. We might ask that question.

  165. We won't answer every aspect of it.

  166. But two things we saw right at the start,

  167. God cares.

  168. And we see also,

  169. he is the Lord of the deluge.

  170. The word for flood occurs 12 times in Genesis 6 to 11

  171. and once outside that in Psalm 29 verse 10.

    Psalms 29:10

  172. The Lord is enthroned over the flood.

  173. The Lord is enthroned forever.

  174. And he's thinking of his people.

  175. Verse 18.

  176. Like he thinks of you and me in January 2024.

  177. God cares for you.

  178. God provides rescue in the form of his saviour.

  179. And he carries you safe to shore,

  180. as the kids' song says.

  181. This is happening because of a promise.

  182. I will establish my covenant with you.

  183. And you will enter the ark.

  184. You and your sons and wife

  185. and your son's wife with you.

  186. Not just Noah, but the family as well.

  187. Part of the promise.

  188. Maybe because they were all righteous like Noah.

  189. Or maybe because he was righteous

  190. and they benefited.

  191. None of them were perfect.

  192. But then we have the animals.

  193. Even the animals.

  194. Verse 19.

  195. Two of every living creature,

  196. male and female,

  197. to keep them alive with you.

  198. Two of every kind of bird,

  199. every kind of animal,

  200. of every kind of creature

  201. that moves along the ground

  202. will come to you

  203. to be kept alive.

  204. You are to take every kind of food

  205. that is to be eaten

  206. and store it away as food

  207. for you and for them.

  208. Chapter 7, verse 2

  209. talks more specifically

  210. of seven pairs

  211. of every kind of clean animal,

  212. a male and its mate,

  213. and one pair of every kind

  214. of unclean animal,

  215. a male and its mate,

  216. and also seven pairs

  217. of every kind of bird,

  218. male and female,

  219. to keep their various kinds alive

  220. throughout the earth.

  221. It's interesting.

  222. Clean and unclean,

  223. even at this stage.

  224. But again,

  225. we move on in verse 6,

  226. chapter 6, verse 21.

  227. Every kind of food

  228. is to be taken and stored.

  229. And then chapter 7, verse 1,

  230. the Lord says to Noah,

  231. go into the ark.

  232. Go into the ark.

  233. You and your whole family,

  234. because I have found you righteous

  235. in this generation.

  236. And Noah did

  237. all that the Lord

  238. commanded him.

  239. So what are we to make

  240. today of these

  241. passages?

  242. This account.

  243. Just a few simple things.

  244. Firstly,

  245. Noah was a righteous man

  246. and God cares

  247. for his people.

  248. Noah was a righteous man

  249. and God cares

  250. for his people.

  251. What does it mean

  252. to be righteous like this?

  253. I wonder how I can be righteous

  254. like Noah

  255. this year.

  256. Well,

  257. Noah was a man

  258. who didn't conform.

  259. That's one thing.

  260. He wasn't a Christian

  261. just on a Sunday.

  262. He was a Christian

  263. every day

  264. of the week

  265. when you leave here

  266. and how we live

  267. today.

  268. and Tuesday

  269. and on through the week.

  270. You could see

  271. by his life

  272. every day

  273. there was a difference.

  274. Is that what people

  275. can see

  276. in ourselves?

  277. He was a man

  278. who obeyed God

  279. and it was visible.

  280. There was a visible difference.

  281. We need that again,

  282. don't we,

  283. to be reminded

  284. New Year.

  285. Is there a difference

  286. in how I live my life?

  287. Among the people

  288. he's placed

  289. around me.

  290. The people

  291. I come into contact with.

  292. In the mission field

  293. where he has me.

  294. wherever that is.

  295. He was a man

  296. who obeyed God.

  297. Chapter 6,

  298. verse 9.

  299. This is the account

  300. of Noah

  301. and his family.

  302. Noah was a righteous man

  303. blameless among

  304. the people

  305. at this time

  306. and he walked

  307. faithfully

  308. with God

  309. and his three sons.

  310. Someone has said

  311. Noah is described

  312. in superlative

  313. terms.

  314. That doesn't mean

  315. he's perfect.

  316. He's a sinful man

  317. but his righteousness

  318. is shining through.

  319. We are sinful people

  320. but that our righteousness

  321. would shine through.

  322. He's standing out

  323. from the crowd

  324. and may that be

  325. the prayer of your heart

  326. this year

  327. to be a Christian

  328. living lives

  329. of righteousness.

  330. something that goes

  331. against the flow

  332. of what we are seeing

  333. all around.

  334. So often we conform.

  335. So often we are Christians

  336. who almost want to exhibit

  337. that we conform.

  338. You know,

  339. we're no different.

  340. We're no different after all.

  341. Well, in a sense

  342. you want to show

  343. that you're sinful.

  344. You want to show

  345. that you're imperfect.

  346. People might take you wrong.

  347. They might think

  348. there's something

  349. special about you

  350. and you want to show

  351. that you're

  352. I'm a sinner.

  353. I need his grace.

  354. But on the other hand

  355. you want to also show

  356. that you're different

  357. and for that

  358. to be visible

  359. and seen.

  360. I also think

  361. sometimes we do

  362. exude that

  363. when we don't realise.

  364. We don't realise

  365. what people see

  366. from a positive perspective.

  367. Believe that God can

  368. show people

  369. that your life

  370. is different

  371. even when you don't

  372. feel that way.

  373. So Noah's world

  374. we see in verse 11

  375. of chapter 6

  376. and we probably know

  377. very well

  378. the earth was corrupt

  379. in God's eyes

  380. and was full

  381. of violence.

  382. God saw

  383. how corrupt

  384. the earth

  385. had become

  386. but God

  387. could see

  388. that Noah

  389. was righteous.

  390. The world

  391. we live in

  392. is no easier

  393. than the world

  394. of that time.

  395. Christians face

  396. new dilemmas

  397. today.

  398. You face

  399. new battles

  400. new issues.

  401. Kinsale

  402. carried a line

  403. mission fields

  404. and to some people

  405. you know

  406. they look on

  407. Christians

  408. as a danger.

  409. You know

  410. you're bad

  411. you're a Christian.

  412. You believe

  413. in one God

  414. you believe

  415. that Jesus

  416. is the only way.

  417. The things

  418. you believe

  419. are not accepted

  420. are not acceptable.

  421. It's difficult

  422. days

  423. to be a Christian.

  424. We believe

  425. we have an answer

  426. to give to people

  427. but we are living

  428. in a world

  429. that is corrupt

  430. that does not

  431. think

  432. of him

  433. does not

  434. honour him

  435. and we are

  436. called

  437. to do so.

  438. He sees you.

  439. He sees

  440. everything

  441. that you

  442. go through

  443. and he sees

  444. everything

  445. you do

  446. for him.

  447. He knows

  448. you in the

  449. workplace

  450. or at home

  451. today.

  452. He knows

  453. you in school.

  454. He sees

  455. you in college

  456. and he sees

  457. your righteousness.

  458. I wonder

  459. do you feel

  460. awkward

  461. as we talk

  462. about this

  463. righteousness?

  464. Psalm 14

  465. The Lord

  466. looks down

  467. from heaven

  468. on all

  469. mankind

  470. to see

  471. if there

  472. are any

  473. who

  474. understand

  475. any

  476. who

  477. seek

  478. God.

  479. All have

  480. turned away.

  481. All have

  482. become

  483. corrupt.

  484. There is

  485. no one

  486. who does

  487. good.

  488. Not

  489. even one.

  490. Were you

  491. wondering that?

  492. Were you

  493. thinking to

  494. yourself

  495. all this

  496. talk of

  497. being

  498. righteous?

  499. Noah being

  500. righteous?

  501. I need

  502. to be

  503. righteous.

  504. And you are

  505. thinking

  506. I am not

  507. very

  508. righteous.

  509. You think

  510. to yourself

  511. how can I

  512. be righteous?

  513. I know

  514. what I am

  515. actually like.

  516. I know

  517. what I am

  518. really like.

  519. All this

  520. talk of

  521. righteousness.

  522. I don't

  523. feel that

  524. way at

  525. all.

  526. This is

  527. where the

  528. gospel comes

  529. in.

  530. This is

  531. where the

  532. rescue comes

  533. in.

  534. We know

  535. that the

  536. only righteousness

  537. we have

  538. is in

  539. Jesus.

  540. The only

  541. righteousness

  542. we can

  543. have comes

  544. from him.

  545. Truth is

  546. we are

  547. not holy.

  548. To stand

  549. in God's

  550. presence,

  551. to serve

  552. him,

  553. we are

  554. not

  555. righteous

  556. in our

  557. own

  558. righteousness.

  559. Noah

  560. wasn't

  561. perfect

  562. and he

  563. didn't have

  564. a righteousness

  565. that came

  566. from himself.

  567. But by

  568. grace

  569. it is

  570. possible

  571. for God

  572. to look

  573. down on

  574. those who

  575. seek to

  576. serve

  577. him

  578. and to

  579. see

  580. Christ's

  581. righteousness.

  582. To see

  583. Christ in

  584. us,

  585. to see

  586. Christ for

  587. us,

  588. to see

  589. Christ

  590. with us.

  591. What does

  592. that mean

  593. for us

  594. as believers

  595. today here

  596. in Carigoline

  597. and in

  598. Kinsale?

  599. What did

  600. it mean

  601. for Noah?

  602. well,

  603. we talked

  604. about the

  605. features on

  606. the boat

  607. that Noah

  608. was to

  609. build and

  610. one final

  611. feature that

  612. I didn't

  613. mention.

  614. The boat

  615. had no

  616. rudder

  617. and it

  618. had no

  619. sail

  620. and it

  621. was not

  622. designed

  623. to be

  624. navigated.

  625. it

  626. wasn't

  627. a ship

  628. with

  629. Noah

  630. as

  631. captain.

  632. It

  633. wasn't

  634. about him

  635. navigating

  636. this ship

  637. through

  638. the

  639. ice

  640. fields.

  641. It's

  642. not a

  643. ship

  644. that needs

  645. to show

  646. itself

  647. to be

  648. the best

  649. or the

  650. fastest

  651. or the

  652. greatest.

  653. It

  654. doesn't

  655. need

  656. satellite

  657. tracking

  658. to follow

  659. it.

  660. And do

  661. you know

  662. what it

  663. didn't

  664. have?

  665. It

  666. didn't

  667. have

  668. life

  669. boats

  670. because

  671. it was

  672. the

  673. life

  674. boat.

  675. no man

  676. or woman

  677. will be

  678. in charge

  679. of this

  680. boat

  681. when the

  682. doors

  683. close.

  684. It

  685. will be

  686. a boat

  687. simply

  688. left

  689. in the

  690. hands

  691. of God.

  692. You

  693. and I

  694. in the

  695. gospel

  696. this

  697. year.

  698. In

  699. the

  700. hands

  701. of

  702. God.

  703. Noah

  704. will

  705. build.

  706. Maybe

  707. his sons

  708. will help

  709. him.

  710. Maybe

  711. people

  712. will

  713. mock

  714. him.

  715. We

  716. don't

  717. know

  718. actually

  719. all

  720. the

  721. facts

  722. that

  723. we

  724. sometimes

  725. assume

  726. or

  727. attribute

  728. to

  729. the

  730. story.

  731. But

  732. when it's

  733. finished

  734. they'll

  735. get on

  736. board

  737. and

  738. they'll

  739. sit

  740. tight.

  741. That's

  742. the

  743. gospel.

  744. We have

  745. very little

  746. to put

  747. our hope

  748. in in

  749. this

  750. world.

  751. No

  752. hope

  753. of

  754. guiding

  755. our

  756. own

  757. course.

  758. And

  759. knowing

  760. exactly

  761. how

  762. that

  763. will

  764. turn

  765. out.

  766. We

  767. can't

  768. predict

  769. the

  770. years

  771. ahead

  772. never

  773. mind

  774. the

  775. months

  776. or

  777. the

  778. weeks

  779. ahead.

  780. Kingdoms

  781. will

  782. rise

  783. and

  784. kingdoms

  785. will

  786. fall.

  787. Only

  788. that we

  789. get into

  790. the

  791. boat

  792. God

  793. has

  794. for

  795. us.

  796. A

  797. lifeboat.

  798. The

  799. gospel

  800. of

  801. Jesus.

  802. And

  803. he

  804. will

  805. take

  806. us.

  807. And

  808. he

  809. will

  810. change

  811. us.

  812. And

  813. he

  814. will

  815. guide

  816. us.

  817. He

  818. will

  819. direct

  820. our

  821. lives.

  822. And

  823. it's

  824. all

  825. grace.

  826. And

  827. the

  828. righteousness

  829. we

  830. have

  831. is

  832. just

  833. from

  834. him.

  835. But

  836. it is

  837. righteousness.

  838. It's

  839. the

  840. righteousness

  841. of

  842. Jesus

  843. who

  844. hung

  845. on the

  846. cross

  847. for

  848. our

  849. sins,

  850. paid

  851. the

  852. price

  853. that

  854. we

  855. should

  856. have

  857. paid,

  858. that

  859. we

  860. couldn't

  861. pay.

  862. The

  863. Father

  864. who

  865. gave

  866. up

  867. his

  868. son

  869. for

  870. us

  871. and

  872. told

  873. us

  874. to

  875. get

  876. on

  877. board

  878. in

  879. a

  880. sense,

  881. like

  882. with

  883. this

  884. great

  885. ship.

  886. And

  887. when

  888. we

  889. get

  890. on

  891. board,

  892. sometimes

  893. we

  894. think

  895. of

  896. all

  897. kinds

  898. of

  899. things.

  900. We

  901. think,

  902. what

  903. about

  904. this?

  905. What

  906. about

  907. that?

  908. Even

  909. what

  910. about

  911. other

  912. people?

  913. people.

  914. And a

  915. lot of

  916. our

  917. time as

  918. Christians

  919. is spent

  920. caring about

  921. other

  922. people.

  923. A lot

  924. of our

  925. ministry,

  926. called

  927. Kerry Project,

  928. is about

  929. other

  930. people.

  931. The way

  932. we've

  933. done

  934. things,

  935. we think

  936. about

  937. other

  938. people,

  939. we care

  940. for other

  941. people.

  942. But

  943. sometimes

  944. you just

  945. have to

  946. be so

  947. thankful

  948. for what

  949. God has

  950. done in

  951. your life,

  952. that he

  953. has saved,

  954. that he's

  955. rescued,

  956. that he's

  957. called you,

  958. that he

  959. has you,

  960. that he

  961. cares

  962. for you.

  963. Exactly

  964. that verse

  965. in 1

  966. Peter.

  967. 5.

  968. Let's

  969. bow our

  970. heads

  971. and let's

  972. pray.

  973. Lord,

  974. we give

  975. you praise

  976. and we

  977. give you

  978. thanks

  979. for your

  980. mercy

  981. shown to

  982. us in

  983. Jesus.

  984. We just

  985. pray and

  986. thank you

  987. Lord that

  988. we don't

  989. deserve

  990. any of

  991. this but

  992. we get

  993. to enjoy

  994. your grace

  995. and your

  996. freedom

  997. and your

  998. righteousness.

  999. The way

  1000. you look

  1001. on us

  1002. because of

  1003. Jesus

  1004. when we

  1005. know and

  1006. love you.

  1007. I pray

  1008. Lord that

  1009. we would

  1010. know you

  1011. in our

  1012. hearts.

  1013. I pray

  1014. you'd

  1015. encourage us

  1016. that you

  1017. care.

  1018. You care

  1019. for every

  1020. person,

  1021. every

  1022. single

  1023. person.

  1024. I pray

  1025. Lord that

  1026. we would

  1027. understand

  1028. this

  1029. gospel

  1030. of Jesus

  1031. not an

  1032. old

  1033. religion

  1034. but a

  1035. gospel,

  1036. a good

  1037. news

  1038. of freedom

  1039. from sin.

  1040. We are

  1041. not

  1042. righteous

  1043. but in

  1044. your grace

  1045. because of

  1046. what Jesus

  1047. did.

  1048. We can

  1049. be seen

  1050. that way

  1051. when we

  1052. don't

  1053. deserve

  1054. it.

  1055. Thank you

  1056. Lord.

  1057. Help us

  1058. to be

  1059. grateful

  1060. this week

  1061. for all

  1062. you've

  1063. done in

  1064. our lives.

  1065. Forgive us

  1066. Lord for

  1067. our desire

  1068. to live

  1069. our own

  1070. way.

  1071. Forgive us

  1072. for the

  1073. times when

  1074. we are

  1075. cynical

  1076. about your

  1077. love.

  1078. When we

  1079. suffer

  1080. and we

  1081. blame you,

  1082. forgive us.

  1083. Cleanse us

  1084. Lord from

  1085. our heart

  1086. and our

  1087. suffering

  1088. that causes

  1089. us to

  1090. often live

  1091. as though we

  1092. don't have

  1093. you in

  1094. our lives.

  1095. Help us

  1096. not to live

  1097. as orphans

  1098. but to

  1099. live as

  1100. sons of

  1101. you.

  1102. Lord we

  1103. give you

  1104. praise and

  1105. thanks for

  1106. this great

  1107. mercy you've

  1108. shown us in

  1109. Jesus.

  1110. Thank you

  1111. for the

  1112. example of

  1113. that great

  1114. boat that

  1115. Noah built

  1116. his

  1117. obedience.

  1118. We pray

  1119. that we

  1120. would

  1121. follow and

  1122. we pray

  1123. Lord that

  1124. you would

  1125. lead us

  1126. this week.

  1127. In

  1128. Jesus name

  1129. we pray.

  1130. Amen.

  1131. Amen.

  1132. Thank you so

  1133. much Craig.

  1134. We're going

  1135. to sing our

  1136. last song

  1137. now.

  1138. Thank you

  1139. Thank you.
