  1. Joseph, a young man of 17, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

  2. Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of the other sons because he had been born to him in his old age, and he made a richly ornamented robe for him.

  3. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

  4. Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.

  5. He said to them, listen to this dream I had.

  6. We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.

  7. His brothers said to him, do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?

  8. And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

  9. Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers.

  10. Listen, he said, I had another dream, and this time the sun and the moon and the eleven stars were bowing down to me.

  11. When he told his father as well as his brothers, his fathers rebuked him and said, what is this dream you had?

  12. Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?

  13. His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in his mind.

  14. Verse 12.

  15. Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem.

  16. And Israel said to Joseph, as you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem.

  17. Come, I am going to send you to them.

  18. Very well, he replied.

  19. So he said to him, go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks and bring word back to me.

  20. So he sent him off from the valley of Hebron.

  21. When Joseph arrived at Shechem, a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, what are you looking for?

  22. He replied, I am looking for my brothers.

  23. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?

  24. They have moved on from here, the man answered.

  25. I heard them say, let's go to Dothan.

  26. So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan.

  27. But they saw him in the distance and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

  28. Here comes that dreamer, they said to each other.

  29. Come now, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him.

  30. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams.

  31. When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands.

  32. Let's not take his life, he said.

  33. Don't shed any blood.

  34. Throw him into the cistern here in the desert, but don't lay a hand on him.

  35. Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

  36. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the richly ornamented robe he had been wearing, and they took him and threw him into the cistern.

  37. Now the cistern was empty.

  38. There was no water in it.

  39. As they sat down to eat their meals, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead.

  40. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them to Egypt.

  41. Judah said to his brothers, What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?

  42. Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him.

  43. After all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.

  44. His brother agreed.

  45. So when the Median merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for 20 shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

  46. When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.

  47. He went back to his brothers and said, The boy isn't there.

  48. Where can I turn now?

  49. Then they got Joseph's robe, slaughtered a goat, and dipped the robe in his blood.

  50. They took the ornamented robe back to their father and said, We found this.

  51. Examine it to see whether it is your son's robe.

  52. He recognized it and said, It is my son's robe.

  53. Some ferocious animal has devoured him.

  54. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.

  55. Then Jacob tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days.

  56. All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted.

  57. No, he said, In mourning will I go down to the grave to my son.

  58. So his father wept for him.

  59. Meanwhile, the Midianite sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard.

  60. Thank you, Sam.

  61. Thank you, Jonathan.

  62. Good morning, everybody.

  63. Why don't we start by asking God for his help?

  64. Sovereign Father, open our eyes this morning to see your wonderful care for us in the places where we may not see it at all.

  65. For Jesus' sake.

  66. Amen.

  67. I used to watch The Simpsons as a kid.

  68. It's a cartoon show, if you're not familiar with it, about this family who basically model how not to do family most of the time.

  69. They model how to make a mess of it, in fact.

  70. I don't know why it's so popular.

  71. Maybe it makes us feel better when we compare our families to their family.

  72. Maybe that's why.

  73. I'm not quite sure.

  74. But in that show, anyway, every episode kind of had a happy ending.

  75. You know?

  76. Homer and Marge came to some sort of an agreement.

  77. Barrett ended up saving Lisa's bacon.

  78. And they kind of, you know, smoothed things over, despite their flaws.

  79. But in this chapter, we meet Jacob's dysfunctional family.

  80. But unlike The Simpsons, we don't get a happy ending here, do we?

  81. You may remember that this was God's chosen family.

  82. So if we're just thinking about the whole context of the book of Genesis.

  83. Jacob's grandfather, Abraham, was a pagan.

  84. He did not know God, didn't worship God.

  85. But God spoke to him.

  86. God chose him.

  87. Out of all the peoples on the earth, God placed a special favor upon him.

  88. And God gave him promises.

  89. A promise to bless him.

  90. And to bless all peoples in the world through him.

  91. Now, through this family, God was going to send a promised son.

  92. A seed.

  93. And he would crush the serpent, who way back in the Garden of Eden, had deceived Adam and Eve.

  94. And this son would deal with our rebellion.

  95. And would make a way for us to get back to God.

  96. So that was the promise made to Abraham.

  97. And God had reiterated that promise to Jacob.

  98. So the hopes of all the nations are resting on this family line continuing.

  99. But what a sorry mess we find when we read their story.

  100. Where we should see them being a blessing, we see only chaos and dysfunction.

  101. We see a catastrophic failure in parenting as Jacob's favoritism of Joseph sparks sibling rivalry and jealousy.

  102. Then come Joseph's pride and his immaturity as he shares his dreams of rulership over his brothers.

  103. Stoking the flames of their hatred.

  104. Which in turn spirals into violence.

  105. And after thinking better of killing Joseph, his brothers finally settle for selling him into a life of slavery.

  106. That's the end of him, they think.

  107. Before devising a cruel lie to cover their tracks.

  108. Plunging their father into crippling grief for the rest of his days.

  109. And no, God does not spare us from seeing the chaos of this dysfunctional family.

  110. Every character fails.

  111. And while none of us would like to admit to our own families being dysfunctional.

  112. When we read the story of Jacob, when we read the story of Jacob, in many ways, it's like looking in a mirror.

  113. Because, being brutally honest, we all have our fair share of arguments, jealousy, rage, and lies in our families, don't we?

  114. And here's the thing.

  115. The dysfunction in our families, it actually comes from within us.

  116. We are all broken by sin.

  117. We are all the victims of each other's brokenness and sin.

  118. Be that in our families, or in our communities.

  119. In fact, when you think about it, the whole human race is one big, dysfunctional family.

  120. Hard as we try, we cannot escape it.

  121. Generation after generation, does it actually get any better?

  122. Think about it.

  123. No, it doesn't.

  124. We repeat the same sins.

  125. We're just as dysfunctional as the ones who've gone before.

  126. Maybe it might look a little bit different.

  127. What hope is there?

  128. If we cannot escape this endless cycle of dysfunction.

  129. And as you read chapter 37, maybe there's a part of you that wonders,

  130. where is God?

  131. And all the chaos of this dysfunctional family.

  132. I mean, after all, this is his chosen family.

  133. So where is he?

  134. I mean, did you notice?

  135. His name actually isn't even mentioned in this whole chapter.

  136. God is hidden.

  137. He is seemingly silent.

  138. It appears like he's just letting it all happen and he does not care.

  139. Do you ever feel that way in the middle of your chaos and mess?

  140. Maybe you've gotten yourself into a sin spiral.

  141. It's been days or weeks since you even talked to God.

  142. Or maybe you're in the middle of a chaotic family or work situation and you're suffering under the effects of someone else's sin.

  143. Maybe it's health issues that are just not getting better.

  144. As you walked in the door today, you brought all these situations in with you.

  145. And they're weighing on your mind this morning.

  146. And I've got my own too.

  147. Situations where very little seems to be going right at all.

  148. In fact, even though you may be an optimistic person, you can't see any good.

  149. And you wonder, where are you, Lord?

  150. Can you not see?

  151. Do you not hear my cries?

  152. See, the big question in Genesis 37 is this.

  153. Is God even there in our chaos and dysfunction?

  154. Because if this story is ultimately just a series of unfortunate events outside of God's control,

  155. then there really is no hope.

  156. But if we take a step back for a few minutes and view this whole mess from a different perspective,

  157. I think we can see that God is present in the chaos.

  158. And he's sovereignly working all things for his good purposes.

  159. Even the sin and dysfunction.

  160. Now, God's sovereignty, just to explain that word for a second,

  161. that means God has total authority and is unrestricted in his control over the universe.

  162. And we're going to test that theory against this chapter here and see what does it stand up.

  163. And we're going to see five things in this chapter over which God is sovereign and in control.

  164. Here's the first one.

  165. We're going to start with Joseph's backstory and see that God is sovereign over barrenness and tragedy.

  166. So, we didn't cover it in this chapter, but Joseph's mother was called Rachel.

  167. Now, Rachel was Jacob's favorite wife.

  168. Yes, he had more than one wife.

  169. And no, that did not work out well for him.

  170. In fact, that's most of the reason for all the chaos and mess in this story.

  171. But she struggled to conceive for many, many years.

  172. Until, finally, God enabled her to have a son, naming him Joseph.

  173. Now, if you look down at verse 3, you'll notice that Jacob was elderly at this point.

  174. And he favored Joseph over his 11 other sons.

  175. Well, probably because Rachel was his favorite wife.

  176. Also, probably because Rachel tragically died, giving birth to her second.

  177. So, this made Jacob value Joseph all the more.

  178. And he became so precious to his father.

  179. And we can see what he does in verse 3.

  180. Jacob gifts Joseph this stunning robe of many colors, but not without its side effects.

  181. Verse 4.

  182. Let's read together.

  183. When his brothers saw their father loved Joseph more than any of them,

  184. they hated Joseph and could not speak a kind word to him.

  185. But we have to remember, God was sovereign over the barrenness and the tragedy which led to this favoritism.

  186. God could have stopped these things from happening.

  187. But he didn't.

  188. And he knew how each character in the family would react.

  189. So, we also learn that no sadness or tragedy in our lives is outside of his control either.

  190. God is always working his good purposes, which we will see in this story also.

  191. Secondly, he's sovereign over dreams.

  192. In verses 6 to 11, Joseph had these very specific dreams.

  193. Now, let me just say, these are not usual dreams that a 17-year-old boy has.

  194. I mean, I can think back to when I was 17 years old.

  195. I was probably dreaming about scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final, something like that.

  196. And as you can see, it didn't come true.

  197. But one could say there's still time, but I think it's very unlikely.

  198. But these dreams are different.

  199. God gave Joseph two dreams that foretold his rule over his family.

  200. Look at verse 6.

  201. And Joseph says to his brothers,

  202. And verse 9 continues this theme of the others in the family bowing down to him.

  203. And while it may appear from the outside that God was absent in this whole story,

  204. we can actually see here, very practically, God was sovereignly working in the background,

  205. even through the dreams of a 17-year-old boy.

  206. Isn't that amazing?

  207. And next, we also learn that God is sovereign over foolish mistakes.

  208. The first mistake, we could say, was Joseph foolishly boasting about his dreams,

  209. which caused his brothers to hate him all the more.

  210. I mean, let's face it, he should never have done that.

  211. That was immature of him.

  212. And the second big mistake, verse 13 this time,

  213. was Jacob, who foolishly decided to send Joseph off alone to check on his spiteful brothers.

  214. Now we stop here and ask,

  215. Who in their right mind would send Joseph into harm's way like that?

  216. Did this father not realize the brother's hatred?

  217. Was it not obvious?

  218. But in God's purpose, Joseph churns up his brother's hate,

  219. and Jacob sends off his beloved son into grave danger,

  220. not knowing it was the last he would see of him for 20 years.

  221. It was a terrible mistake.

  222. How else can you put it?

  223. But God was working his good purposes,

  224. which would only be revealed later.

  225. And God is sovereign over our worst mistakes too.

  226. Now that doesn't make them right.

  227. That's not an excuse for us to act sinfully without care.

  228. No, no.

  229. But what a comfort it is

  230. to know that God will save his chosen people

  231. despite our mistakes,

  232. and even through them.

  233. Wow.

  234. Isn't that amazing?

  235. Next thing,

  236. we learn that God is sovereign

  237. over seemingly chance encounters.

  238. I put inverted commas around the word chance there for a reason.

  239. We can imagine Joseph, right,

  240. he's maybe hesitantly setting off to see his brother saying,

  241. okay, dad, if I have to.

  242. I don't think this is a great idea,

  243. but yes, I'll go.

  244. And when he arrives in Shechem,

  245. the brothers have already left.

  246. They've moved their flocks on somewhere else.

  247. And in verse 15,

  248. we find that he's aimlessly wandering around the fields,

  249. but then he bumps into someone.

  250. And this person

  251. just happens to know exactly where the brothers have gone.

  252. Now if you just stop here and think about this for a second,

  253. if Joseph had never met this man,

  254. he just would have gone back home,

  255. and the rest would never have happened.

  256. When you think about it,

  257. but according to God's purpose,

  258. Joseph bumped into this man,

  259. and he found his brothers in Dothan.

  260. So remember,

  261. God is sovereign over all the people

  262. that you meet during the day.

  263. There are no chance meetings in God's kingdom,

  264. and we must keep our eyes open

  265. and be ready.

  266. I think the last thing we can see God is sovereign over

  267. in this chapter is

  268. sin.

  269. And I think this is the one

  270. that could be hardest to understand.

  271. In verse 18,

  272. if you look down there,

  273. God knew the violent thoughts

  274. that the brothers would harbor

  275. now that they had Joseph alone

  276. to themselves.

  277. Let's read from 18.

  278. But the brothers saw Joseph in the distance,

  279. and before he reached them,

  280. they plotted to kill him.

  281. Here comes that dreamer,

  282. they said to each other.

  283. Come now, let's kill him.

  284. Let's throw him into one of these cisterns,

  285. and say that a ferocious animal

  286. devoured him.

  287. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams.

  288. You know,

  289. God was in control.

  290. Both over their plot to kill him,

  291. and Reuben's intervention.

  292. Read in verse 21.

  293. When Reuben heard this,

  294. he tried to rescue Joseph from their hands.

  295. Let's not take his life,

  296. he said.

  297. Don't shed any blood.

  298. Throw him into this cistern here

  299. in the wilderness,

  300. but don't lay a hand on him.

  301. Reuben said this

  302. to rescue him

  303. from them

  304. and take him back

  305. to his father.

  306. So the brothers threw him in the cistern.

  307. And we know

  308. that Reuben,

  309. he's wanting to get Jacob

  310. whipped up out of that cistern,

  311. sorry, get Joseph

  312. whipped up out of that cistern

  313. and back to his father

  314. as soon as possible.

  315. And surely that's what God will, right?

  316. I mean,

  317. that the boy will be saved.

  318. No.

  319. No.

  320. You see,

  321. what happens next

  322. just illustrates

  323. God's amazing sovereignty

  324. all the more.

  325. God was able to see

  326. to it that Reuben

  327. was present

  328. to save Joseph

  329. from death.

  330. But then that he was

  331. absent

  332. when the Midianite traders

  333. came along

  334. and Joseph's brothers

  335. sold him into slavery.

  336. Maybe Reuben

  337. had to take a run

  338. to the well for water

  339. or maybe he forgot

  340. his cloak

  341. in the other field.

  342. Who knows

  343. why

  344. he wasn't there?

  345. The writer doesn't tell us

  346. the reason why

  347. he wasn't there.

  348. All we know is

  349. he wasn't there.

  350. Whenever it was dinner time

  351. and whenever the traders

  352. happened

  353. to come by.

  354. And the rest is history.

  355. Look in verse 29.

  356. When Reuben

  357. returned to the cistern

  358. and saw that Joseph

  359. was not there

  360. he tore

  361. his clothes.

  362. He went back

  363. to his brothers

  364. and said,

  365. the boy isn't there.

  366. Where can I turn

  367. now?

  368. If Reuben

  369. had been there

  370. Joseph

  371. would never

  372. have been sold

  373. and he never

  374. would have got

  375. to Egypt.

  376. But it was

  377. God's purpose

  378. that Joseph

  379. would get to Egypt.

  380. So God

  381. made sure

  382. Reuben

  383. wasn't there

  384. for dinner.

  385. God was even

  386. in control

  387. over the cruel

  388. sinful

  389. betrayal

  390. of Joseph

  391. into the hands

  392. of those

  393. traitors

  394. in everything

  395. achieving

  396. his good purposes.

  397. Now

  398. let's just stop here

  399. for a second

  400. and ask the question

  401. is all of this

  402. chance?

  403. Is it all

  404. just coincidence?

  405. I believe

  406. the answer

  407. is no.

  408. When we

  409. dig beneath

  410. the surface

  411. we find

  412. God's

  413. fingerprints

  414. his sovereign

  415. work

  416. all

  417. over

  418. this

  419. story.

  420. God had a purpose

  421. behind every

  422. single one of these

  423. sinful actions.

  424. He is sovereign

  425. over sin.

  426. Now

  427. we must be

  428. careful

  429. not to accuse

  430. God of

  431. causing

  432. people to sin

  433. or

  434. saying that

  435. God is

  436. morally

  437. responsible

  438. for sin.

  439. The Bible

  440. is clear

  441. that God

  442. is holy.

  443. He hates

  444. sin.

  445. So

  446. this

  447. is tough

  448. to understand

  449. but in one

  450. sense

  451. he wills

  452. that no one

  453. would sin.

  454. and yet

  455. there is

  456. another

  457. sense

  458. in which

  459. he ordains

  460. that some

  461. evil acts

  462. take place

  463. in his

  464. perfect

  465. plan

  466. to save.

  467. But the

  468. Bible is

  469. always

  470. clear

  471. that people

  472. are always

  473. held

  474. responsible

  475. for their

  476. sin.

  477. sin.

  478. And I

  479. think

  480. there is

  481. a verse

  482. later

  483. in this

  484. story

  485. which

  486. Joseph

  487. says

  488. it is

  489. from

  490. Genesis

  491. 50

  492. 20

  493. and this

  494. helps

  495. us

  496. to

  497. understand

  498. this

  499. it is

  500. on the

  501. board

  502. there.

  503. And Joseph

  504. is saying

  505. this to his

  506. brothers

  507. 20 years

  508. later

  509. when the

  510. whole

  511. saga is

  512. over

  513. everything

  514. has been

  515. smoothed

  516. over

  517. and this

  518. is what

  519. he says

  520. you

  521. brothers

  522. you

  523. meant it

  524. for evil

  525. against me.

  526. So he's

  527. like

  528. you

  529. chose

  530. that

  531. sinful

  532. course

  533. of

  534. action

  535. you

  536. are

  537. responsible

  538. for that

  539. and yet

  540. equally

  541. so

  542. Joseph

  543. says

  544. God

  545. meant

  546. it

  547. for

  548. good

  549. this

  550. was

  551. in

  552. God's

  553. plan

  554. it's

  555. not

  556. one

  557. or the

  558. other

  559. somehow

  560. both

  561. of

  562. these

  563. are

  564. true.

  565. My

  566. brothers

  567. you

  568. committed

  569. the

  570. evil

  571. act

  572. because

  573. it

  574. was

  575. what

  576. your

  577. sinful

  578. hearts

  579. wanted

  580. most

  581. and

  582. God

  583. ordained

  584. that

  585. sinful

  586. act

  587. for his

  588. good

  589. purposes

  590. to

  591. save

  592. all

  593. of

  594. you.

  595. God

  596. is

  597. 100%

  598. sovereign

  599. people

  600. are

  601. 100%

  602. responsible.

  603. Now

  604. if anything

  605. this

  606. drives us

  607. to our

  608. knees

  609. in

  610. humility

  611. and

  612. all

  613. because

  614. our

  615. finite

  616. human

  617. brains

  618. cannot

  619. fully

  620. comprehend

  621. this

  622. and we

  623. are

  624. called

  625. to

  626. trust

  627. God

  628. with

  629. the

  630. things

  631. that

  632. we

  633. don't

  634. yet

  635. understand

  636. and

  637. let me

  638. just

  639. say

  640. I

  641. think

  642. we

  643. have

  644. more

  645. than

  646. enough

  647. reason

  648. to

  649. trust

  650. I

  651. mean

  652. step

  653. back

  654. and

  655. survey

  656. what's

  657. happened

  658. in

  659. this

  660. story

  661. the

  662. brothers

  663. they

  664. wanted

  665. to

  666. kill

  667. the

  668. very

  669. person

  670. who

  671. ended

  672. up

  673. rescuing

  674. them

  675. from

  676. starvation

  677. 20

  678. years

  679. later

  680. and

  681. in

  682. their

  683. attempt

  684. to

  685. get

  686. rid

  687. of

  688. him

  689. once

  690. and

  691. for

  692. all

  693. where

  694. did

  695. they

  696. send

  697. him

  698. to

  699. the

  700. very

  701. place

  702. from

  703. where

  704. he

  705. could

  706. rescue

  707. them

  708. how

  709. extraordinary

  710. are the

  711. plans

  712. of our

  713. sovereign

  714. God

  715. may

  716. his

  717. awesome

  718. sovereignty

  719. and control

  720. be a

  721. comfort

  722. to you

  723. in

  724. in

  725. in

  726. the

  727. midst

  728. of

  729. your

  730. chaos

  731. and

  732. dysfunction

  733. no

  734. one

  735. in

  736. this

  737. story

  738. would

  739. have

  740. imagined

  741. how

  742. these

  743. evil

  744. acts

  745. could

  746. have

  747. turned

  748. out

  749. for

  750. good

  751. I

  752. mean

  753. as this

  754. chapter

  755. finishes

  756. where's

  757. Joseph

  758. well he's

  759. changed to

  760. the back

  761. of a

  762. camel

  763. his

  764. throat

  765. is

  766. parched

  767. he is

  768. trudging

  769. his

  770. way

  771. down

  772. the

  773. dusty

  774. road

  775. to

  776. Egypt

  777. wondering

  778. how

  779. on

  780. earth

  781. did

  782. I

  783. get

  784. here

  785. and

  786. where

  787. is

  788. that

  789. God

  790. who

  791. made

  792. the

  793. promise

  794. where

  795. is he

  796. now

  797. and I

  798. don't need

  799. to tell

  800. you

  801. how

  802. difficult

  803. it is

  804. to trust

  805. God

  806. I don't

  807. need to

  808. tell you

  809. how

  810. difficult

  811. it is

  812. to trust

  813. God

  814. in the

  815. chaos

  816. in your

  817. life

  818. those

  819. situations

  820. where

  821. you've

  822. tried

  823. but

  824. just

  825. cannot

  826. see

  827. how

  828. any

  829. good

  830. could

  831. possibly

  832. come

  833. of

  834. this

  835. it

  836. doesn't

  837. make

  838. sense

  839. to

  840. us

  841. at

  842. all

  843. but

  844. this

  845. passage

  846. gives

  847. us

  848. hope

  849. because

  850. it

  851. sure

  852. didn't

  853. make

  854. sense

  855. to

  856. Joseph

  857. and

  858. yet

  859. God

  860. was

  861. present

  862. in

  863. his

  864. chaos

  865. working

  866. out

  867. his

  868. good

  869. purposes

  870. we

  871. tend

  872. to

  873. think

  874. God

  875. is

  876. only

  877. at

  878. work

  879. in

  880. the

  881. times

  882. of

  883. blessing

  884. health

  885. happiness

  886. or

  887. success

  888. but

  889. not

  890. so

  891. God

  892. is

  893. also

  894. working

  895. through

  896. our

  897. deepest

  898. pain

  899. he

  900. is

  901. sovereign

  902. over

  903. our

  904. tears

  905. and

  906. chaos

  907. though

  908. you

  909. may

  910. ask

  911. him

  912. time

  913. and

  914. time

  915. again

  916. to

  917. take

  918. it

  919. away

  920. he

  921. may

  922. choose

  923. not

  924. to

  925. do

  926. so

  927. to

  928. fulfill

  929. his

  930. good

  931. purposes

  932. in

  933. your

  934. life

  935. he

  936. has

  937. not

  938. rejected

  939. you

  940. just

  941. like

  942. he

  943. had

  944. not

  945. rejected

  946. Joseph

  947. now

  948. this

  949. all

  950. begs

  951. the

  952. question

  953. what

  954. are

  955. those

  956. ultimate

  957. good

  958. purposes

  959. of

  960. God

  961. well

  962. in

  963. this

  964. story

  965. God

  966. was

  967. saving

  968. Jacob's

  969. whole

  970. family

  971. from

  972. starvation

  973. 20

  974. years

  975. later

  976. but

  977. ultimately

  978. God

  979. wasn't

  980. just

  981. saving

  982. this

  983. family

  984. he

  985. was

  986. preserving

  987. the

  988. promised

  989. seed

  990. who

  991. was

  992. to

  993. come

  994. through

  995. this

  996. family

  997. line

  998. this

  999. son

  1000. came

  1001. from

  1002. a

  1003. different

  1004. sort

  1005. of

  1006. family

  1007. the

  1008. father

  1009. son

  1010. and

  1011. spirit

  1012. have

  1013. existed

  1014. for

  1015. eternity

  1016. in

  1017. perfect

  1018. love

  1019. there

  1020. is

  1021. no

  1022. dysfunction

  1023. in

  1024. this

  1025. family

  1026. and

  1027. our

  1028. sin

  1029. always

  1030. prevented

  1031. us

  1032. from

  1033. entering

  1034. into

  1035. the

  1036. love

  1037. of

  1038. this

  1039. family

  1040. but

  1041. the

  1042. most

  1043. astounding

  1044. reality

  1045. of the

  1046. bible

  1047. is that

  1048. God

  1049. the

  1050. son

  1051. the

  1052. promised

  1053. seed

  1054. stepped

  1055. into

  1056. our

  1057. dysfunction

  1058. and

  1059. chaos

  1060. he

  1061. became

  1062. a

  1063. human

  1064. being

  1065. and

  1066. lived

  1067. in a

  1068. dysfunctional

  1069. family

  1070. and

  1071. community

  1072. he

  1073. knows

  1074. what

  1075. it's

  1076. like

  1077. and

  1078. amidst

  1079. all

  1080. that

  1081. dysfunction

  1082. around

  1083. him

  1084. he

  1085. lived

  1086. the

  1087. perfect

  1088. life

  1089. of

  1090. obedience

  1091. to

  1092. God

  1093. that

  1094. we

  1095. could

  1096. never

  1097. live

  1098. and

  1099. then

  1100. on

  1101. the

  1102. cross

  1103. he

  1104. took

  1105. the

  1106. blame

  1107. for

  1108. our

  1109. dysfunction

  1110. and

  1111. rebellion

  1112. against

  1113. God's

  1114. loving

  1115. rule

  1116. rising

  1117. again

  1118. he

  1119. won

  1120. the

  1121. victory

  1122. over

  1123. death

  1124. for

  1125. us

  1126. and

  1127. then

  1128. even

  1129. more

  1130. astonishingly

  1131. John

    John 1:12

  1132. chapter

  1133. 1

  1134. verse

  1135. 12

  1136. tells

  1137. us

  1138. that

  1139. anyone

  1140. who

  1141. receives

  1142. this

  1143. son

  1144. who

  1145. believes

  1146. in

  1147. his

  1148. name

  1149. they

  1150. are

  1151. given

  1152. the

  1153. right

  1154. to

  1155. become

  1156. children

  1157. of

  1158. God

  1159. that

  1160. is

  1161. we

  1162. can

  1163. be

  1164. welcomed

  1165. into

  1166. God's

  1167. perfect

  1168. family

  1169. forever

  1170. there

  1171. will

  1172. be

  1173. no

  1174. more

  1175. sin

  1176. or

  1177. dysfunction

  1178. or

  1179. chaos

  1180. instead

  1181. caught

  1182. up

  1183. in

  1184. the

  1185. eternal

  1186. love

  1187. joy

  1188. and

  1189. peace

  1190. of

  1191. the

  1192. Trinity

  1193. tell

  1194. me

  1195. one

  1196. thing

  1197. that

  1198. could

  1199. be

  1200. better

  1201. than

  1202. that

  1203. so

  1204. when

  1205. you

  1206. cry

  1207. out

  1208. and

  1209. ask

  1210. why

  1211. God

  1212. seems

  1213. absent

  1214. in

  1215. your

  1216. chaos

  1217. look

  1218. to

  1219. the

  1220. cross

  1221. he

  1222. stepped

  1223. into

  1224. our

  1225. chaos

  1226. to

  1227. ultimately

  1228. rescue

  1229. us

  1230. out

  1231. of

  1232. it

  1233. for

  1234. eternity

  1235. and

  1236. it

  1237. was

  1238. all

  1239. achieved

  1240. through

  1241. that

  1242. promised

  1243. seed

  1244. who

  1245. came

  1246. through

  1247. the

  1248. family

  1249. line

  1250. of

  1251. Jacob

  1252. preserved

  1253. through

  1254. the

  1255. suffering

  1256. and

  1257. pain

  1258. of

  1259. Joseph

  1260. yes

  1261. now we

  1262. see

  1263. all the

  1264. more

  1265. that

  1266. God

  1267. was

  1268. sovereign

  1269. over

  1270. all

  1271. that

  1272. evil

  1273. and

  1274. pain

  1275. in

  1276. Joseph's

  1277. life

  1278. working

  1279. his

  1280. good

  1281. purposes

  1282. to

  1283. save

  1284. his

  1285. chosen

  1286. people

  1287. and

  1288. our

  1289. God

  1290. is

  1291. still

  1292. working

  1293. those

  1294. purposes

  1295. here

  1296. and

  1297. now

  1298. in

  1299. our

  1300. lives

  1301. so

  1302. as

  1303. we

  1304. walk

  1305. out

  1306. that

  1307. door

  1308. today

  1309. and

  1310. back

  1311. into

  1312. our

  1313. different

  1314. messy

  1315. situations

  1316. we

  1317. have

  1318. hope

  1319. that

  1320. the

  1321. outside

  1322. world

  1323. can

  1324. never

  1325. know

  1326. because

  1327. God

  1328. is

  1329. present

  1330. in

  1331. our

  1332. chaos

  1333. sovereignly

  1334. working

  1335. all

  1336. things

  1337. even

  1338. sin

  1339. and

  1340. dysfunction

  1341. to

  1342. save

  1343. his

  1344. people

  1345. bringing

  1346. them

  1347. into

  1348. his

  1349. family

  1350. forever

  1351. now

  1352. that

  1353. is

  1354. good

  1355. news

  1356. for

  1357. you
