  1. It's on page 51 of the Red Church Bibles.

  2. When the news reached Pharaoh's palace that Joseph's brothers had come,

  3. Pharaoh and all his officials were pleased.

  4. Pharaoh said to Joseph, tell your brothers, do this,

  5. load your animals and return to the land of Canaan,

  6. and bring me, your father, and your families back to me.

  7. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt,

  8. and you can enjoy the fat of the land.

  9. You were also instructed to tell them, do this,

  10. take some carts from Egypt for your children and your wives,

  11. and get your father to come.

  12. Never mind about your belongings,

  13. because the best of all Egypt will be yours.

  14. So the son of Israel did this.

  15. Joseph gave them carts, as Pharaoh had commanded.

  16. He also gave them provisions for their journey.

  17. To each of them he gave new clothing,

  18. but to Benjamin he gave 300 shekels of silver and five sets of clothes.

  19. And this is what he sent to his father,

  20. ten donkeys loaded with the best things of Egypt,

  21. and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread

  22. and other provisions for his journey.

  23. Then he sent his brothers away,

  24. and as they were leaving he said to them,

  25. don't quarrel on the way.

  26. So they went up out of Egypt

  27. and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan.

  28. They told him,

  29. Joseph is still alive,

  30. in fact he is the ruler of all Egypt.

  31. Jacob was stunned,

  32. he did not believe them.

  33. But when they told him everything that Joseph had said to them,

  34. and when he saw the carts that Joseph has sent

  35. to carry him back,

  36. the spirit of their father Jacob revived.

  37. And Israel said,

  38. I'm convinced my son Joseph is still alive.

  39. I will go and see him before I die.

  40. So Israel set out with all that was his.

  41. And when he reached Beersheba,

  42. he offered sacrifices to God of his father Isaac.

  43. And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said,

  44. Jacob, Jacob, here I am, he replied.

  45. I am God, the God of your father, he said.

  46. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt,

  47. for I will make you into a great nation there.

  48. I will go down to Egypt with you,

  49. and I will surely bring you back again.

  50. And Joseph's own hand will close your eyes.

  51. Then Jacob left Beersheba,

  52. and Israel's sons took their father Jacob

  53. and their children and their wives

  54. in the carts that Pharaoh had sent to transport them.

  55. So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt,

  56. taking with them their livestock

  57. and possessions that they had acquired in Canaan.

  58. Jacob brought with them to Egypt

  59. his sons and grandsons

  60. and his daughters and granddaughters

  61. and all his offspring.

  62. Thank you, Louise.

  63. So let's keep our Bibles open there

  64. at Genesis 45, 46,

  65. and you can follow along.

  66. Let's pray as we look at God's word.

  67. Father, thank you for these great stories,

  68. these true accounts of your people

  69. who lived so long ago,

  70. but yet speak truth for us today.

  71. And so we ask for your help

  72. that we would be able to apply that truth to our lives,

  73. that it may change us and help us

  74. as we walk with you.

  75. In Jesus' name.

  76. Amen.

  77. Well, it was an emotional moment.

  78. After years of division,

  79. lies, and heartache,

  80. finally, there's reconciliation and restoration.

  81. Just look back, chapter 45, verse 4.

  82. 22 years had passed,

  83. and then Joseph said to his brothers,

  84. come close to me.

  85. When they had done so, he said,

  86. I am your brother Joseph,

  87. the one you had sold into Egypt.

  88. Verse 14.

  89. And Joseph threw his arms around his brother Benjamin

  90. and wept.

  91. And Benjamin embraced him weeping.

  92. And Joseph kissed all his brothers

  93. and wept over them.

  94. 22 years of shame and guilt

  95. had been confessed and forgiven.

  96. It was a turning point for the brothers.

  97. It was a fresh start and a new beginning.

  98. And now as we continue on in the account,

  99. we discover that they're on their way to Egypt.

  100. And as we follow them on their journey,

  101. there are three things we're going to learn

  102. that will help us on our journey

  103. as we walk with God.

  104. There's a warning,

  105. there's a reminder,

  106. and a guarantee.

  107. A warning,

  108. a reminder,

  109. and a guarantee.

  110. Three things we're going to follow

  111. on this journey.

  112. So first,

  113. the warning,

  114. beware the sins of your fathers.

  115. Now,

  116. following the brothers' dramatic transformation

  117. came this unexpected invitation.

  118. Verse 17.

  119. Pharaoh said to Joseph,

  120. tell your brothers,

  121. do this,

  122. load your animals

  123. and return to your home,

  124. to the land of Canaan,

  125. and bring your father

  126. and your families back to me,

  127. and I will give you

  128. the best of land in Egypt,

  129. and you can enjoy the fat

  130. of the land.

  131. All they would ever need

  132. is promised to them.

  133. They've gone from famine

  134. to fortune.

  135. They could hardly believe it.

  136. But old sins

  137. threatened

  138. to ruin it all.

  139. You see,

  140. we've all got

  141. our weaknesses,

  142. haven't we?

  143. Our Achilles heel.

  144. For Jacob

  145. and his family,

  146. it was

  147. favoritism.

  148. And it appears

  149. there was a history

  150. to it.

  151. Apparently,

  152. it all started

  153. with Jacob's parents,

  154. Isaac and Rebecca.

  155. They had two children,

  156. Esau,

  157. and the other one

  158. was Jacob.

  159. And the story tells us

  160. in chapter 25

  161. that Isaac

  162. loved Esau,

  163. but Rebecca

  164. loved Jacob.

  165. Now,

  166. that's never good

  167. for family dynamics,

  168. is it,

  169. to have parents

  170. loving one

  171. more than the other?

  172. In fact,

  173. as we read on

  174. in the account,

  175. it set a pattern

  176. that practically

  177. divided

  178. and destroyed

  179. the family.

  180. Later on,

  181. we learn that

  182. Jacob married

  183. two women,

  184. Leah and Rachel.

  185. And once again,

  186. favoritism came through.

  187. The story tells us

  188. in chapter 29

  189. that Jacob's love

  190. for Rachel

  191. was greater

  192. than his love

  193. for Leah.

  194. Favoritism.

  195. And this

  196. seeped through

  197. into the love

  198. for the children.

  199. Chapter 37,

  200. verse 3,

  201. tells us,

  202. now Jacob

  203. loved Joseph

  204. more than

  205. any of his

  206. other's sons.

  207. Favoritism.

  208. And the brothers

  209. hated him

  210. for it.

  211. They were filled

  212. with jealousy

  213. and envy

  214. and they sold him

  215. as a slave.

  216. That's what we've been

  217. looking at

  218. over the weeks.

  219. But with Joseph

  220. gone,

  221. Jacob's favoritism

  222. jumped to

  223. Benjamin.

  224. So when the news

  225. came to Jacob

  226. that if the family

  227. were going to receive

  228. any more food

  229. from Egypt,

  230. they would have to

  231. send Benjamin

  232. down there.

  233. And Jacob

  234. would adamant,

  235. have a look at

  236. chapter 42,

  237. just go back

  238. a couple of pages,

  239. chapter 42,

  240. verse 38.

  241. So the request

  242. has been to bring

  243. Benjamin down

  244. to Egypt.

  245. And Jacob said,

  246. my son will not

  247. go down there

  248. with you.

  249. His brother,

  250. thinking of Joseph,

  251. is dead.

  252. And he is the

  253. only one

  254. left.

  255. Well,

  256. he wasn't the

  257. only one left,

  258. was he?

  259. Jacob had

  260. ten other sons,

  261. but of all

  262. the sons,

  263. it seems

  264. only one

  265. son mattered.

  266. Generations

  267. torn apart

  268. by favoritism,

  269. envy,

  270. and jealousy.

  271. Now let's go

  272. back to

  273. chapter 45.

  274. But all

  275. seems to be

  276. different now.

  277. The brothers

  278. had repented,

  279. they've been

  280. reconciled to

  281. Joseph,

  282. it's a new

  283. beginning,

  284. it's a fresh

  285. start,

  286. but sin

  287. once again

  288. raises its

  289. ugly head.

  290. Did you

  291. notice it

  292. when we

  293. listened to

  294. the reading?

  295. Verse 21,

  296. Joseph gave

  297. them carts

  298. as Pharaoh

  299. had commanded,

  300. and he also

  301. gave them

  302. provisions for

  303. the journey.

  304. To each of

  305. them he gave

  306. new clothing.

  307. nothing.

  308. But to

  309. Benjamin,

  310. he gave

  311. 300 shekels

  312. of silver.

  313. Now that's

  314. enough to

  315. pay off his

  316. mortgage,

  317. buy himself

  318. a nice new

  319. car,

  320. and have

  321. money left

  322. over for a

  323. lovely holiday.

  324. But not

  325. just that,

  326. five

  327. walk-in

  328. wardrobes.

  329. it seems

  330. that Joseph

  331. has got

  332. his own

  333. favourite.

  334. And there

  335. was potential

  336. for further

  337. upset.

  338. Was envy

  339. and jealousy

  340. beginning to

  341. strike again?

  342. Look at

  343. verse 24.

  344. And Joseph

  345. sent his

  346. brothers away,

  347. and as they

  348. were leaving,

  349. he said to

  350. them,

  351. don't quarrel

  352. on the

  353. way.

  354. It seems

  355. Joseph has

  356. his own

  357. favourites,

  358. and he knew

  359. the danger

  360. of favouritism.

  361. But it seems

  362. he's blind

  363. to his own

  364. behaviours.

  365. The sins

  366. of our

  367. fathers

  368. are never

  369. too far

  370. away.

  371. Now

  372. favouritism

  373. mightn't be

  374. your issue.

  375. It could

  376. be stubbornness,

  377. or maybe

  378. it's control.

  379. Or maybe

  380. it's lies,

  381. or

  382. unforgiveness,

  383. or

  384. manipulation,

  385. or keeping

  386. a grudge.

  387. And if

  388. you're not

  389. quite sure

  390. what your

  391. sin struggle

  392. is,

  393. well then

  394. ask your

  395. spouse or

  396. a close

  397. friend,

  398. because they'll

  399. know what

  400. it is,

  401. and they'll

  402. tell you.

  403. You see,

  404. we learn

  405. behaviours,

  406. don't we?

  407. We repeat

  408. patterns.

  409. that's why

  410. people say

  411. things like

  412. this,

  413. oh he's

  414. an old

  415. chip off,

  416. he's a

  417. chip off

  418. the old

  419. block.

  420. Or she's

  421. got her

  422. mother's

  423. ways.

  424. We know

  425. what we

  426. mean when

  427. we say

  428. that.

  429. You see,

  430. God in

  431. his grace

  432. has given

  433. us so

  434. much and

  435. he's blessed

  436. us,

  437. not least

  438. with family

  439. and friends,

  440. but how

  441. often are

  442. those

  443. relationships

  444. broken and

  445. shattered,

  446. and remain

  447. broken and

  448. shattered

  449. because of

  450. pride and

  451. anger and

  452. stubbornness and

  453. favouritism.

  454. Are we able

  455. to spot and

  456. recognise the

  457. sins that

  458. continue down

  459. through our

  460. family and in

  461. our own

  462. life?

  463. Of course,

  464. we have sins

  465. that are similar

  466. to Adam,

  467. our first

  468. father.

  469. sin of

  470. selfishness,

  471. living as

  472. we please

  473. and doing

  474. as we

  475. want.

  476. You see,

  477. we not only

  478. need to

  479. recognise our

  480. sin,

  481. we need to

  482. confront it

  483. and deal

  484. with it,

  485. admit to

  486. it,

  487. own up,

  488. confess it

  489. to God.

  490. Because if

  491. we don't

  492. deal with

  493. our sin,

  494. it will

  495. come to

  496. the surface

  497. in divisive

  498. and destructive

  499. ways.

  500. just as it

  501. did in

  502. Jacob's

  503. family and

  504. as it

  505. seems to

  506. be arising

  507. once again

  508. with Joseph.

  509. So as we

  510. journey along,

  511. first,

  512. beware the

  513. sins of

  514. your fathers.

  515. second,

  516. a reminder,

  517. remember the

  518. promises

  519. from our

  520. God.

  521. Jacob's

  522. life has

  523. been filled

  524. with trouble

  525. and trials,

  526. primarily as

  527. we've just

  528. seen,

  529. by his own

  530. doing,

  531. especially the

  532. sin of

  533. favouritism.

  534. Yet God

  535. doesn't give

  536. up.

  537. he sticks

  538. with sinners.

  539. The brothers

  540. return home

  541. to their

  542. father,

  543. and it's

  544. not just

  545. with provisions

  546. and an

  547. invitation to

  548. go to

  549. Egypt,

  550. but with

  551. some great

  552. news.

  553. Look at

  554. verse 26.

  555. The brothers

  556. told their

  557. father Jacob,

  558. Joseph is

  559. still alive.

  560. In fact,

  561. he's the

  562. ruler of

  563. all Egypt.

  564. Jacob was

  565. stunned.

  566. He couldn't

  567. believe it.

  568. 22 years

  569. have passed.

  570. And when

  571. they told

  572. him everything

  573. Joseph had

  574. said to

  575. them,

  576. and when

  577. he saw

  578. the carts

  579. Joseph had

  580. sent to

  581. carry him

  582. back,

  583. the spirit

  584. of their

  585. father Jacob

  586. revived.

  587. And

  588. Israel said,

  589. I'm

  590. convinced.

  591. My son

  592. Joseph is

  593. still alive.

  594. I will

  595. go.

  596. and see

  597. him before

  598. I die.

  599. Now,

  600. the question

  601. we're all

  602. asking is,

  603. did the

  604. brothers tell

  605. their father

  606. what they

  607. did to

  608. Joseph?

  609. Do you

  610. think they

  611. did?

  612. Well,

  613. we're not

  614. told,

  615. are we?

  616. We're not

  617. told what

  618. they told

  619. their father.

  620. It appears

  621. that that

  622. particular piece

  623. of information

  624. is an

  625. important,

  626. important.

  627. If it

  628. really was

  629. important,

  630. it would

  631. be recorded

  632. for us,

  633. but it's

  634. not.

  635. Instead,

  636. we're told

  637. of something

  638. else that

  639. is more

  640. important,

  641. and this

  642. is where

  643. our focus

  644. should be.

  645. we don't

  646. get an

  647. answer,

  648. we do

  649. get a

  650. promise.

  651. Look at

  652. chapter 46

  653. verse 2.

  654. God's

  655. name.

  656. And God

  657. spoke to

  658. Israel in

  659. a vision

  660. at night

  661. and said,

  662. Jacob,

  663. Jacob,

  664. here I

  665. am,

  666. he replied.

  667. I am

  668. God,

  669. the God

  670. of your

  671. father,

  672. he said.

  673. God's

  674. calling out

  675. to Jacob

  676. in a

  677. vision is

  678. specific

  679. and

  680. intentional.

  681. God is

  682. introducing

  683. himself to

  684. Jacob as

  685. the covenant

  686. God,

  687. the God

  688. who makes

  689. promises

  690. and keeps

  691. promises.

  692. I am

  693. God,

  694. the God

  695. of your

  696. father,

  697. he said.

  698. this is

  699. the commitment

  700. that God

  701. gives.

  702. He is

  703. the one

  704. who makes

  705. promises

  706. and keeps

  707. promises.

  708. And to

  709. enable Jacob

  710. to trust

  711. God,

  712. he gives

  713. another

  714. promise.

  715. Look at

  716. verse 4.

  717. Or sorry,

  718. verse 3,

  719. we'll take

  720. it up in

  721. verse 3.

  722. I am

  723. God,

  724. the God

  725. of your

  726. father,

  727. he said.

  728. Do not

  729. be afraid

  730. to go

  731. down to

  732. Egypt,

  733. for I

  734. will make

  735. you into

  736. a great

  737. nation.

  738. And now

  739. here comes

  740. another

  741. promise.

  742. I will

  743. go down

  744. to Egypt

  745. with you

  746. and I

  747. will surely

  748. bring you

  749. back again.

  750. That's the

  751. commitment of

  752. God.

  753. That's his

  754. loyalty.

  755. He proves

  756. his promises

  757. by his

  758. presence.

  759. Verse 4,

  760. I will

  761. go

  762. with you.

  763. I will

  764. bring you

  765. back.

  766. I will

  767. do it.

  768. you see,

  769. if we

  770. have the

  771. presence of

  772. God with

  773. us,

  774. then we're

  775. on solid

  776. ground.

  777. We don't

  778. need to

  779. fear and

  780. we don't

  781. need to

  782. worry.

  783. That's the

  784. confidence the

  785. writer of

  786. Psalm 46

  787. has.

  788. Read along

  789. with me.

  790. God is our

  791. refuge and

  792. strength,

  793. an ever

  794. present help

  795. in trouble.

  796. God is the

  797. end of the

  798. earth.

  799. God is the

  800. end of the

  801. heart of

  802. the sea.

  803. Did you see

  804. the solid

  805. ground we

  806. have there?

  807. Do you see

  808. the promise?

  809. Get your

  810. highlighter out,

  811. your pen,

  812. scribble,

  813. mark,

  814. ever

  815. present.

  816. Ever

  817. present.

  818. It's a

  819. guarantee.

  820. It's a

  821. promise.

  822. Our God is

  823. the ever

  824. present God.

  825. He doesn't

  826. leave us.

  827. He never

  828. forsakes us.

  829. You see,

  830. this isn't just

  831. a nice

  832. sentiment that

  833. we text to

  834. our friends

  835. without any

  836. thought.

  837. Oh,

  838. God is with

  839. you.

  840. We just

  841. palm it

  842. off.

  843. No,

  844. this is a

  845. truth that

  846. provides

  847. security and

  848. stability.

  849. I will

  850. go with

  851. you.

  852. You see,

  853. it doesn't

  854. matter whether

  855. we're travelling

  856. down to

  857. Egypt like

  858. the brothers

  859. or having

  860. to go and

  861. visit the

  862. doctor over

  863. some concern

  864. or we're

  865. starting into

  866. a new job.

  867. Yes,

  868. we will

  869. have fears

  870. and worries,

  871. but we

  872. are not

  873. alone.

  874. The

  875. Creator

  876. God,

  877. the

  878. Almighty

  879. God,

  880. the

  881. covenant

  882. God who

  883. makes

  884. promises

  885. is

  886. ever

  887. present.

  888. I

  889. will

  890. be

  891. with

  892. you.

  893. Yes,

  894. he is

  895. with people

  896. like you

  897. and me

  898. who mess

  899. up and

  900. sin just

  901. like Jacob

  902. did,

  903. but he

  904. sticks

  905. with us.

  906. So

  907. first,

  908. beware of

  909. the sins

  910. of our

  911. fathers

  912. and

  913. remember the

  914. promises

  915. of our

  916. God

  917. and

  918. third,

  919. here's the

  920. guarantee,

  921. recall the

  922. assurances

  923. for our

  924. life,

  925. recall the

  926. assurance for

  927. our lives.

  928. So with

  929. the promises

  930. of God

  931. given to

  932. Jacob,

  933. his family

  934. pack up

  935. and they

  936. head for

  937. Egypt,

  938. verse 7.

  939. Jacob

  940. brought with

  941. him to

  942. Egypt his

  943. sons and

  944. grandsons and

  945. his daughters

  946. and granddaughters

  947. and all his

  948. offspring.

  949. Now,

  950. that's enough

  951. information,

  952. isn't it?

  953. Isn't that all

  954. we need to

  955. know?

  956. Jacob and

  957. his family

  958. headed off

  959. down to

  960. Egypt.

  961. But what

  962. we get

  963. is another

  964. catalogue of

  965. one of those

  966. genealogies,

  967. those boring

  968. details,

  969. like how

  970. many of us

  971. start reading

  972. verse 8,

  973. these are the

  974. names of the

  975. sons of Israel,

  976. Jacob and his

  977. descendants who

  978. went to

  979. Egypt,

  980. Reuben,

  981. the firstborn

  982. of Jacob,

  983. the sons of

  984. Reuben,

  985. Hanok,

  986. Palu,

  987. Hezron,

  988. Carmi.

  989. Do you want

  990. me to keep

  991. going?

  992. Do we really

  993. need to know

  994. everybody's

  995. name?

  996. I mean,

  997. the writer

  998. could have

  999. just saved a

  1000. lot of

  1001. research and

  1002. time and

  1003. just stopped

  1004. at verse 7

  1005. and jump all

  1006. the way to

  1007. verse 28

  1008. where the

  1009. story continues.

  1010. So why

  1011. have we

  1012. got all

  1013. this list

  1014. of names?

  1015. Does he

  1016. just like

  1017. names?

  1018. Has he

  1019. got a

  1020. particular

  1021. hobby?

  1022. No,

  1023. it's much

  1024. deeper and

  1025. richer than

  1026. that.

  1027. But this

  1028. list of

  1029. names reveals

  1030. to us

  1031. God's

  1032. faithfulness

  1033. or to be

  1034. more accurate

  1035. God's

  1036. assurances

  1037. to his

  1038. people in

  1039. times of

  1040. great failure.

  1041. look with

  1042. me at

  1043. this list

  1044. of names.

  1045. They're

  1046. recorded or

  1047. broken up

  1048. into four

  1049. groups.

  1050. So starting

  1051. in verse 8

  1052. we have a

  1053. list of

  1054. names of

  1055. sons and

  1056. then come

  1057. to verse 15

  1058. and we're

  1059. told these

  1060. are the

  1061. sons of

  1062. Leah born

  1063. to Jacob.

  1064. And then

  1065. we have a

  1066. list of

  1067. other sons.

  1068. And we

  1069. get to

  1070. verse 18

  1071. and we're

  1072. told these

  1073. are the

  1074. children born

  1075. to Jacob

  1076. by Zilpah.

  1077. And then

  1078. we've got

  1079. more names.

  1080. And then

  1081. verse 22

  1082. these were

  1083. the sons

  1084. of Rachel

  1085. who were

  1086. born to

  1087. Jacob.

  1088. And then

  1089. a few

  1090. more and

  1091. in verse

  1092. 25 these

  1093. are the

  1094. sons born

  1095. to Jacob

  1096. by Bilhah.

  1097. What's

  1098. going on?

  1099. why all

  1100. these

  1101. kind of

  1102. references

  1103. to their

  1104. mothers?

  1105. Well

  1106. Leah was

  1107. Jacob's

  1108. first wife.

  1109. And remember

  1110. we learned

  1111. this just

  1112. now.

  1113. Jacob

  1114. didn't love

  1115. Leah.

  1116. He loved

  1117. Rachel.

  1118. And it

  1119. sparked off

  1120. a baby

  1121. war.

  1122. Who could

  1123. get the

  1124. most babies

  1125. out of

  1126. Jacob?

  1127. And when

  1128. they couldn't

  1129. have more

  1130. babies they

  1131. got their

  1132. maidservants

  1133. involved.

  1134. Zilpah

  1135. and Bilhah.

  1136. It sparked

  1137. was all

  1138. sparked off

  1139. by favoritism

  1140. which led

  1141. to envy

  1142. and rivalry.

  1143. One family

  1144. but here

  1145. they are

  1146. divided

  1147. and broken

  1148. in four.

  1149. You see

  1150. that's what

  1151. favoritism

  1152. does.

  1153. That's what

  1154. sin does.

  1155. It wrecks

  1156. and it

  1157. destroys.

  1158. They are a

  1159. family that

  1160. have been

  1161. broken up.

  1162. But yet

  1163. here they

  1164. are all

  1165. listed,

  1166. all named,

  1167. all recorded.

  1168. Not one

  1169. of them

  1170. is missing.

  1171. They're all

  1172. accounted

  1173. for.

  1174. Why?

  1175. Because God

  1176. had made

  1177. a promise

  1178. that he

  1179. was going

  1180. to make

  1181. this ragamuffin

  1182. bunch of

  1183. failures

  1184. into a

  1185. great nation

  1186. so that

  1187. they in

  1188. turn could

  1189. go and

  1190. be a

  1191. blessing

  1192. to the

  1193. nations.

  1194. It's a

  1195. wonder that

  1196. they've

  1197. actually

  1198. made it

  1199. so far.

  1200. In one

  1201. sense these

  1202. names shouldn't

  1203. be here

  1204. but they

  1205. are.

  1206. And it's

  1207. all down

  1208. to God's

  1209. stubborn

  1210. faithfulness

  1211. to a

  1212. bunch

  1213. of failures.

  1214. And so

  1215. as we look

  1216. at this

  1217. list of

  1218. names

  1219. we don't

  1220. go

  1221. isn't

  1222. that

  1223. boring.

  1224. we are

  1225. amazed at

  1226. what God

  1227. has done.

  1228. Verse 27

  1229. With the

  1230. two sons

  1231. who had

  1232. been born

  1233. to Joseph

  1234. in Egypt

  1235. the members

  1236. of Jacob's

  1237. family which

  1238. went to

  1239. Egypt

  1240. were 70

  1241. in all.

  1242. Now 70

  1243. isn't much

  1244. of a nation

  1245. is it?

  1246. And they

  1247. don't seem

  1248. to be doing

  1249. much blessing.

  1250. Maybe you've

  1251. got 70

  1252. in your

  1253. family you

  1254. wouldn't

  1255. call yourself

  1256. a nation.

  1257. Well nations

  1258. have to

  1259. start somewhere

  1260. don't they?

  1261. And that's

  1262. where the

  1263. story brings

  1264. us.

  1265. God

  1266. assures us

  1267. that he

  1268. keeps his

  1269. promise.

  1270. He said

  1271. he would

  1272. have a

  1273. nation

  1274. and here

  1275. he's

  1276. building

  1277. a nation.

  1278. But our

  1279. story doesn't

  1280. end there.

  1281. You see

  1282. from this

  1283. broken

  1284. family

  1285. God was

  1286. going to

  1287. bring his

  1288. promise

  1289. to

  1290. fulfillment.

  1291. from the

  1292. family line

  1293. of Jacob

  1294. would come

  1295. eventually

  1296. down through

  1297. the years

  1298. the saviour

  1299. of the

  1300. world

  1301. Jesus

  1302. Christ.

  1303. The one

  1304. who brings

  1305. the blessing

  1306. of new

  1307. life and

  1308. eternal

  1309. hope to

  1310. all the

  1311. nations.

  1312. You see

  1313. God may

  1314. have started

  1315. out way

  1316. back in

  1317. Genesis

  1318. with a

  1319. nation of

  1320. 70.

  1321. God's

  1322. love to

  1323. God.

  1324. But today

  1325. there are

  1326. hundreds of

  1327. millions of

  1328. people who

  1329. have been

  1330. brought into

  1331. the family

  1332. of God

  1333. by trusting

  1334. in Jesus

  1335. Christ.

  1336. Listen to

  1337. what the

  1338. apostle Peter

  1339. reminds us.

  1340. You can

  1341. follow it on

  1342. the screen.

  1343. Peter says,

  1344. I now

  1345. realize how

  1346. true it is

  1347. that God

  1348. does not

  1349. show

  1350. favouritism.

  1351. Our

  1352. problem

  1353. often is

  1354. favouritism

  1355. but not

  1356. with God.

  1357. He accepts

  1358. people from

  1359. every

  1360. nation.

  1361. The one

  1362. who fears

  1363. him and

  1364. does what

  1365. is right.

  1366. Everyone

  1367. who believes

  1368. in him

  1369. receives

  1370. forgiveness

  1371. of sins

  1372. through his

  1373. name.

  1374. You see

  1375. just as

  1376. God said

  1377. he is

  1378. building a

  1379. nation,

  1380. a people

  1381. belonging to

  1382. him,

  1383. a bunch

  1384. of failures

  1385. who have

  1386. been forgiven

  1387. and are

  1388. welcomed into

  1389. God's

  1390. family.

  1391. And God

  1392. loves

  1393. everyone

  1394. equally.

  1395. Each one

  1396. is treasured.

  1397. There is

  1398. no favouritism

  1399. within the

  1400. family of

  1401. God.

  1402. And everyone

  1403. is remembered

  1404. and everyone

  1405. is accounted

  1406. for.

  1407. This family,

  1408. this nation

  1409. is what we

  1410. call the

  1411. church.

  1412. That's who

  1413. we are,

  1414. a nation

  1415. gathering

  1416. together,

  1417. who have

  1418. been commissioned

  1419. by the

  1420. risen Jesus

  1421. to go

  1422. and bring

  1423. blessing to

  1424. the nations.

  1425. Remember what

  1426. Jesus said?

  1427. The end of

  1428. Matthew's

  1429. gospel,

  1430. chapter 28.

  1431. Go and

  1432. make

  1433. disciples

  1434. of all

  1435. nations

  1436. and surely

  1437. I am with

  1438. you always

  1439. to the very

  1440. end of the

  1441. age.

  1442. age.

  1443. There's

  1444. that promise

  1445. again.

  1446. The

  1447. ever-present

  1448. promise.

  1449. These are

  1450. the last

  1451. words of

  1452. Jesus

  1453. recorded by

  1454. Matthew in

  1455. his gospel.

  1456. And of

  1457. all the

  1458. things Jesus

  1459. wants us

  1460. to remember,

  1461. it's this

  1462. promise that

  1463. as you go

  1464. as my

  1465. people,

  1466. I am

  1467. with you

  1468. always.

  1469. grace.

  1470. I am

  1471. ever-present

  1472. in whatever

  1473. you do.

  1474. You see,

  1475. the account

  1476. of Jacob's

  1477. family

  1478. enables us

  1479. to recall

  1480. the assurances

  1481. of God.

  1482. It gives us

  1483. assurance that

  1484. God will do

  1485. what he says

  1486. he will do.

  1487. God is

  1488. working through

  1489. his people,

  1490. people like

  1491. us, who

  1492. are gathered

  1493. here in

  1494. Carigaline,

  1495. to build

  1496. his church,

  1497. to share

  1498. the good

  1499. news of

  1500. Christ, so

  1501. that all

  1502. nations, all

  1503. people, might

  1504. be welcomed

  1505. in.

  1506. And how do

  1507. we know it's

  1508. going to

  1509. happen?

  1510. Because of

  1511. this story.

  1512. Because of

  1513. what God

  1514. started and

  1515. what he's

  1516. continuing to

  1517. do.

  1518. And it

  1519. happens by

  1520. the stubborn

  1521. faithfulness of

  1522. God.

  1523. So as we

  1524. follow the

  1525. journey with

  1526. these brothers,

  1527. let's learn

  1528. from them.

  1529. As we

  1530. journey with

  1531. God together,

  1532. let us be

  1533. aware of the

  1534. sins of our

  1535. father.

  1536. Deal with

  1537. it.

  1538. Otherwise it

  1539. will come up

  1540. to the surface

  1541. and it will

  1542. be destructive

  1543. and divisive.

  1544. And as we

  1545. journey, let

  1546. us remember

  1547. the promises

  1548. of our

  1549. God.

  1550. He is

  1551. with you.

  1552. He is

  1553. ever

  1554. present.

  1555. And let's

  1556. together recall

  1557. the assurances

  1558. for our

  1559. life.

  1560. That God

  1561. will keep

  1562. his promise

  1563. and God

  1564. will build

  1565. his church.

  1566. change.

  1567. Let's

  1568. pray together.

  1569. our

  1570. father God,

  1571. there is

  1572. much for

  1573. us to

  1574. learn as

  1575. we walk

  1576. our path,

  1577. as we

  1578. journey with

  1579. you.

  1580. would you

  1581. please help

  1582. us to

  1583. learn these

  1584. three things

  1585. that we've

  1586. looked at

  1587. today.

  1588. Father,

  1589. help us

  1590. not to

  1591. hide our

  1592. sin,

  1593. but to

  1594. deal with

  1595. it, to

  1596. confess it,

  1597. so that it

  1598. doesn't become

  1599. divisive or

  1600. destructive.

  1601. father,

  1602. thank you

  1603. for the

  1604. wonderful

  1605. promise

  1606. that you

  1607. are ever

  1608. present with

  1609. us this

  1610. week,

  1611. wherever we

  1612. go,

  1613. whether it's

  1614. to school

  1615. or college,

  1616. or maybe

  1617. we have to

  1618. go and see

  1619. someone and

  1620. we're a bit

  1621. worried.

  1622. You are

  1623. with us.

  1624. And thank

  1625. you for the

  1626. great assurance

  1627. that you have

  1628. given to us,

  1629. your church,

  1630. your people.

  1631. that you

  1632. are building

  1633. a people

  1634. and you

  1635. will see

  1636. that your

  1637. promises are

  1638. fulfilled.

  1639. So help us

  1640. to walk with

  1641. you together.

  1642. Help us to

  1643. trust you,

  1644. knowing that

  1645. you are good.

  1646. and it's in

  1647. Jesus' name

  1648. we all

  1649. pray.

  1650. Amen.

  1651. Well, we're

  1652. going to

  1653. sing a

  1654. song which

  1655. is one of

  1656. praise.

  1657. We join in

  1658. with all

  1659. creation to

  1660. praise our

  1661. great God

  1662. God who

  1663. works with

  1664. sinners like

  1665. us, who

  1666. is present

  1667. with us,

  1668. and the

  1669. God who

  1670. gives us

  1671. great assurance.

  1672. Let's
