  1. Look forward to catching up with you over tea and coffee.

  2. Amelia is going to come and read for us from James.

  3. So if you want to look up there.

  4. Moving from James 5 verse 7 to 12.

    James 5:7–12

  5. Be patient then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming.

  6. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop,

  7. patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.

  8. You too be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near.

  9. Don't grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged.

  10. The judge is standing at the door.

  11. Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering,

  12. take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

  13. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered.

  14. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about.

  15. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

  16. Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear, not by heaven or by earth or by anything else.

  17. All you need to say is simple yes or no, otherwise you will be condemned.

  18. Thank you very much, Amelia.

  19. We're just taking a break this week from our studies in Genesis.

  20. We're going to be looking at James 5, so let's keep our Bibles open there.

  21. And we're going to pray and ask for God's help.

  22. Let's pray.

  23. Father, we thank you that you are the God who meets us in our need

  24. and holds us by your right hand,

  25. your strong, caring and protective hand.

  26. And we ask now that you would speak to us

  27. so that you might help us

  28. in our lives individually and corporately together as your people.

  29. For we need you.

  30. We need your blessing.

  31. So help us now, we pray in Jesus' name.

  32. Amen.

  33. So how do you cope with trials and struggles?

  34. When you face a particular suffering,

  35. how do you deal with it?

  36. How do you respond to it?

  37. If you're treated unjustly and accused falsely,

  38. do you seek revenge?

  39. Or if you experience a fallout in a relationship,

  40. do you simply just give up?

  41. Or you receive news of an unwanted diagnosis,

  42. are you bitter?

  43. Or your closest friend suddenly dies,

  44. are you angry?

  45. Perhaps like me, when things come that we don't want,

  46. we just hope and pray that God will make it all stop

  47. and all go away.

  48. Well, James is writing to Christians

  49. who are facing all kinds of suffering.

  50. Just look how he started his letter.

  51. Go back to chapter 1 with me for a minute.

  52. Chapter 1, verse 2.

  53. This is how he started out.

  54. Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,

  55. whenever you face trials of many kinds.

  56. He doesn't say if you face trials,

  57. but whenever you face trials.

  58. In other words, we're not going to go through

  59. a suffering-free life.

  60. In fact, we're to expect it.

  61. We're to prepare for it.

  62. We will face trials, verse 2,

  63. of many kinds.

  64. So I wonder, what is your trial today?

  65. Maybe it's physical health concerns.

  66. Maybe it's a relational issue.

  67. Could be spiritual.

  68. Maybe a combination of all of them.

  69. But the message is very clear.

  70. Suffering is the normal experience of life.

  71. And we need to know how to respond

  72. when we come across it.

  73. So how do we respond?

  74. Well, let's go back to chapter 5.

  75. Because surprisingly,

  76. we're encouraged to be patient.

  77. Look at verse 7.

  78. Be patient then, brothers and sisters.

  79. Verse 8.

  80. You too be patient.

  81. Well, patient in what?

  82. Well, look at verse 10.

  83. Brothers and sisters,

  84. as an example of patience

  85. in the face of suffering.

  86. Be patient.

  87. I mean, have you any idea

  88. what it's constantly like

  89. to be in trouble?

  90. To wait for years

  91. for a consultant?

  92. To experience heartache and hardship?

  93. What planet are you on, James?

  94. What do you mean,

  95. be patient?

  96. I'm suffering here.

  97. I want it to end

  98. and I want it to stop right now.

  99. Patience?

  100. Is that the best you can offer me?

  101. Well, patience doesn't mean

  102. just put up and shut up.

  103. Patience is a demonstration

  104. of faith.

  105. Patience means

  106. resting in the absolute certainty

  107. that God will not forget you

  108. or fail you,

  109. but will ensure that

  110. all suffering will end.

  111. That's our big theme.

  112. Resting in the absolute certainty

  113. that God will not forget you

  114. or fail you,

  115. but will ensure that

  116. all suffering will end.

  117. So when you receive

  118. bad news from your doctor,

  119. be patient.

  120. When you find the job

  121. that you're in a struggle,

  122. be patient.

  123. When you experience

  124. an injustice,

  125. be patient.

  126. When we face trials

  127. of many kinds,

  128. be patient.

  129. patient.

  130. In the face of suffering,

  131. James gives us

  132. two reasons

  133. why we can be patient.

  134. Here's the first one.

  135. The Lord is coming.

  136. Verse 7.

  137. Be patient then,

  138. brothers and sisters,

  139. until the Lord's coming.

  140. We see the same in verse 8.

  141. You too,

  142. be patient

  143. and stand firm

  144. because the Lord

  145. is coming near.

  146. When the Lord Jesus returns,

  147. all wrongs will be put right,

  148. all hurts are going to be healed,

  149. and every storm

  150. will be stilled.

  151. For the Christian,

  152. the message is clear.

  153. Your trials

  154. are not forever.

  155. Did you notice

  156. what it said in verse 7?

  157. Be patient

  158. until

  159. the Lord's coming.

  160. So there will come a time

  161. when we don't need patience anymore.

  162. Verse 8.

  163. You too,

  164. be patient

  165. and stand firm

  166. because the Lord's coming

  167. is near.

  168. Suffering will one day

  169. end.

  170. Because the Lord is coming,

  171. because it is certain,

  172. I can be patient.

  173. He gives us an example

  174. of what that patience is

  175. in the rest of verse 7.

  176. Think about the farmers.

  177. See how the farmer waits

  178. for the land

  179. to yield its valuable crop,

  180. patiently waiting

  181. for the autumn

  182. and spring rains.

  183. Well, we get rain

  184. all the time,

  185. don't we?

  186. Maybe too much of it

  187. and if you're a farmer,

  188. you're probably

  189. complaining a lot.

  190. In other countries,

  191. rains come just

  192. twice a year,

  193. autumn

  194. and spring.

  195. And if there's no rain,

  196. there's no fruit,

  197. there's no produce,

  198. there's no crops,

  199. the farmer will do

  200. what he can,

  201. he'll plant his seed

  202. and then wait

  203. patiently.

  204. And then wait

  205. patiently.

  206. Although the dry season

  207. may last for weeks

  208. and months,

  209. the rains do come.

  210. Well, in the same way,

  211. he's telling us

  212. that the hardships

  213. and the heartaches

  214. that we endure,

  215. they may seem like

  216. they never end.

  217. They just go on and on.

  218. But the rains are coming.

  219. The end will come.

  220. In the Bible,

  221. the rains,

  222. the rainy season,

  223. is symbol of God's promise

  224. to renew

  225. and to restore all things.

  226. If you keep your finger

  227. in James 5

  228. and go back to Psalm 126,

  229. we'll see an example of this.

  230. Psalm 126.

  231. So we're thinking

  232. of the rainy seasons

  233. as a symbol of God's

  234. restoration and renewal.

  235. And in this psalm,

  236. the writer is looking back

  237. to better days,

  238. to good days.

  239. Verse 2,

  240. he tells us,

  241. our mouths were filled

  242. with laughter,

  243. our tongues with songs

  244. of joy.

  245. That it was said

  246. among the nations,

  247. the Lord has done

  248. great things for them.

  249. Those were good times,

  250. the best of times.

  251. But now it seems

  252. there is a season

  253. of suffering.

  254. And the cry goes out,

  255. verse 4,

  256. restore our fortunes,

  257. Lord,

  258. like streams in the Negev,

  259. waiting for the rains

  260. to come.

  261. Those who sow with tears

  262. will reap

  263. with songs of joy.

  264. You see,

  265. today may be

  266. a season of tears,

  267. longing,

  268. waiting,

  269. hoping,

  270. but a day

  271. is coming

  272. when there will be

  273. songs of joy.

  274. Let's go back

  275. to James 5.

  276. The rains of renewal

  277. and restoration

  278. are coming.

  279. So,

  280. rest in the

  281. absolute certainty

  282. that God will not

  283. forget you

  284. or fail you,

  285. but will ensure

  286. that all suffering

  287. will end.

  288. Now,

  289. because the Lord

  290. is coming,

  291. it shapes

  292. how we live

  293. today,

  294. right now.

  295. Two things here

  296. because of the

  297. Lord's coming.

  298. He tells us

  299. to stand firm,

  300. verse 8.

  301. You too

  302. be patient

  303. and stand

  304. firm

  305. because the

  306. Lord is coming.

  307. When the

  308. storms come

  309. upon us,

  310. when we're

  311. drowning

  312. and struggling

  313. to breathe,

  314. when the waves

  315. crash upon us,

  316. we can

  317. stand

  318. firm.

  319. We stand

  320. firm

  321. on the

  322. promises of

  323. God

  324. that He

  325. is coming.

  326. That is our

  327. anchor.

  328. That is our

  329. rock and refuge.

  330. That is what

  331. will give me

  332. hope.

  333. This is the

  334. confidence

  335. and assurance

  336. we have.

  337. Despite the

  338. trials we may

  339. go through,

  340. God has not

  341. abandoned me.

  342. He has me

  343. in the grip

  344. of His

  345. right hand,

  346. His strong

  347. and mighty

  348. hand.

  349. He will not

  350. forget me

  351. or fail me.

  352. The fact

  353. that the

  354. Lord is

  355. coming

  356. means I

  357. can stand

  358. firm.

  359. But not

  360. just stand

  361. firm.

  362. In our

  363. patience and

  364. in our

  365. waiting,

  366. He also

  367. says to us,

  368. don't grumble.

  369. That's a hard

  370. one, isn't

  371. it?

  372. Verse 9,

  373. don't grumble

  374. against one

  375. another,

  376. brothers and

  377. sisters.

  378. You see,

  379. when we go

  380. through trials,

  381. the danger is

  382. we can look

  383. around us

  384. and begin to

  385. compare ourselves

  386. to others.

  387. Their life

  388. is easy.

  389. Why don't

  390. they ever

  391. struggle?

  392. If only

  393. they knew

  394. what it was

  395. like.

  396. And as

  397. we look at

  398. the lives

  399. of other

  400. people and

  401. we compare

  402. ourselves to

  403. them,

  404. we can

  405. get bitter.

  406. We can

  407. become angry.

  408. At times

  409. we grumble

  410. and complain.

  411. We can

  412. even begin

  413. to take our

  414. hurts out

  415. on others

  416. and in our

  417. pain we can

  418. lash out.

  419. Well,

  420. He says

  421. something to

  422. us here.

  423. Do you see

  424. it at the

  425. end of verse

  426. 9?

  427. Don't

  428. grumble

  429. or you

  430. will be

  431. judged.

  432. The judge

  433. is standing

  434. at the

  435. door.

  436. The judge

  437. is coming.

  438. The Lord

  439. Jesus is

  440. coming.

  441. And when

  442. He comes

  443. He will

  444. put everything

  445. right.

  446. We don't

  447. have to do

  448. that.

  449. He will

  450. make it

  451. right.

  452. So don't

  453. grumble.

  454. The Lord

  455. is coming.

  456. Rest in

  457. the absolute

  458. certainty

  459. that God

  460. will not

  461. forget you

  462. or fail

  463. you.

  464. But will

  465. ensure that

  466. all suffering

  467. will end.

  468. Oh,

  469. you say,

  470. Johnny,

  471. that's brilliant.

  472. The Lord's

  473. coming.

  474. When's that?

  475. That could be

  476. another 10 or

  477. 20 years.

  478. What about

  479. now?

  480. The heartaches

  481. and the

  482. struggles are

  483. still with

  484. me.

  485. I know

  486. He's

  487. coming.

  488. Well,

  489. here's the

  490. second reason

  491. to be

  492. patient.

  493. The Lord

  494. is faithful.

  495. Look at

  496. verse 10.

  497. Brothers

  498. and sisters,

  499. as an

  500. example of

  501. patience in

  502. the face

  503. of suffering,

  504. take the

  505. prophets who

  506. spoke in

  507. the name

  508. of the

  509. Lord.

  510. Remember

  511. the prophets?

  512. People like

  513. Jeremiah,

  514. Isaiah?

  515. They were

  516. those who

  517. spoke God's

  518. word on

  519. behalf of

  520. God.

  521. Well,

  522. you read

  523. their stories

  524. and they

  525. faced all

  526. kinds of

  527. suffering.

  528. In fact,

  529. it seems to

  530. be that those

  531. who were

  532. prophets and

  533. those who

  534. served God,

  535. it didn't

  536. lessen their

  537. suffering.

  538. It actually

  539. increased it.

  540. And of course,

  541. the best example

  542. of one of the

  543. prophets who

  544. suffered greatly

  545. is Job.

  546. That's what we're

  547. reminded of if you

  548. look at the

  549. middle of verse

  550. 11.

  551. You have

  552. heard of

  553. Job's

  554. perseverance

  555. and have

  556. seen what

  557. the Lord

  558. finally brought

  559. about.

  560. He's saying,

  561. do you remember

  562. the story of

  563. Job?

  564. Do you

  565. remember?

  566. Well,

  567. let's go to

  568. chapter 38

  569. of Job.

  570. Job chapter

    Job 38 chapter mention

  571. 38.

  572. The beginning

  573. of Job,

  574. if you don't

  575. know it,

  576. tells us that

  577. Job was a

  578. blameless

  579. and upright

  580. man, one

  581. who feared

  582. God and

  583. shunned evil.

  584. He was a

  585. good guy.

  586. He was a

  587. good community

  588. person.

  589. He loved

  590. the Lord.

  591. And if

  592. anyone deserved

  593. a suffering

  594. free life,

  595. it was

  596. Job.

  597. But yet

  598. his life

  599. was filled

  600. with all

  601. kinds of

  602. suffering.

  603. He lost

  604. all his

  605. crops and

  606. all his

  607. herds.

  608. All his

  609. financial

  610. security ripped

  611. from beneath

  612. him.

  613. If that

  614. wasn't bad

  615. enough, all

  616. his children

  617. died in a

  618. tornado when

  619. the house

  620. collapsed upon

  621. them.

  622. And then

  623. he lost

  624. his health.

  625. to a

  626. crippling

  627. painful

  628. skin

  629. disease.

  630. And as

  631. time

  632. passed, the

  633. sufferings only

  634. seemed to get

  635. worse.

  636. His so-called

  637. comforting

  638. friends, well

  639. they began to

  640. point the

  641. finger and

  642. blame him.

  643. Well, Job,

  644. you know what?

  645. If you didn't

  646. do this or you

  647. didn't do that,

  648. then these

  649. sufferings wouldn't

  650. be happening

  651. to you.

  652. It was

  653. insult to

  654. injury.

  655. And as the

  656. account of

  657. Job's life

  658. concludes, we

  659. find him

  660. alone in

  661. his pain.

  662. And then

  663. God speaks.

  664. What would

  665. God say?

  666. What does he

  667. say to us

  668. today in our

  669. suffering?

  670. Well, look at

  671. verse 4,

  672. Job chapter

    Job 38 chapter mention

  673. 38.

  674. With all our

  675. questions and

  676. wonderings, God

  677. asks us

  678. questions.

  679. Where were

  680. you when I

  681. laid the

  682. earth's

  683. foundation?

  684. Tell me if

  685. you understand.

  686. Who marked

  687. off its

  688. dimensions?

  689. Surely you

  690. must know.

  691. Who stretched

  692. a measuring

  693. line across

  694. it?

  695. on what

  696. were its

  697. footings set?

  698. Or who

  699. laid its

  700. cornerstone

  701. while the

  702. morning stars

  703. sang together

  704. and all the

  705. angels shouted

  706. for joy?

  707. Job, were

  708. you there at

  709. the beginning

  710. of time?

  711. Who created

  712. the universe?

  713. Was it you?

  714. Who rules

  715. and controls

  716. all things?

  717. Job, who

  718. is over

  719. your life?

  720. And the

  721. questions

  722. continue.

  723. And then

  724. finally Job

  725. responds,

  726. chapter 42,

  727. verse 1.

  728. Then Job

  729. replied to

  730. the Lord,

  731. I know

  732. that you

  733. can do

  734. all things.

  735. No purpose

  736. of yours

  737. can be

  738. thwarted.

  739. God's

  740. plan,

  741. plan,

  742. that his

  743. people will

  744. persevere

  745. in the

  746. greatest of

  747. trials and

  748. struggles.

  749. God's

  750. plan to

  751. make sure

  752. his people

  753. make it to

  754. the end

  755. can't be

  756. thwarted.

  757. It can't

  758. be derailed.

  759. God is

  760. faithful.

  761. Remember

  762. what we

  763. sang in

  764. one of

  765. our

  766. songs

  767. earlier?

  768. This is

  769. what it's

  770. calling for.

  771. And I

  772. will trust

  773. the hands

  774. that made

  775. the starry

  776. heavens.

  777. And I

  778. will trust

  779. the wounds

  780. of Calvary.

  781. And I

  782. will trust

  783. and I

  784. will not

  785. be afraid

  786. for all

  787. his ways

  788. are love.

  789. the hands

  790. that made

  791. the universe,

  792. the hands

  793. that were

  794. crucified

  795. for you

  796. and for

  797. me,

  798. the hands

  799. that will

  800. be upon

  801. our life

  802. and will

  803. make sure

  804. that we

  805. get to

  806. the end

  807. will never

  808. ever fail

  809. us.

  810. God is

  811. faithful.

  812. Let's go

  813. back to

  814. James.

  815. You see,

  816. suffering

  817. can knock

  818. us and

  819. crush us.

  820. We can

  821. doubt and

  822. we can

  823. question.

  824. But no

  825. suffering,

  826. no trial

  827. can shake

  828. the steadfast

  829. faithfulness

  830. of God.

  831. He created

  832. you.

  833. He sustains

  834. you.

  835. God is

  836. fully and

  837. faithfully

  838. committed

  839. to you.

  840. His plans

  841. to keep

  842. you cannot

  843. be broken.

  844. Look at

  845. the end

  846. of verse

  847. 11.

  848. He says,

  849. you have

  850. heard of

  851. Job's

  852. perseverance

  853. and have

  854. seen what

  855. the Lord

  856. finally brought

  857. about.

  858. Job's

  859. life was

  860. restored.

  861. He was

  862. blessed with

  863. a new

  864. family and

  865. with great

  866. wealth.

  867. But here's

  868. the point

  869. of the text.

  870. Do you

  871. see it

  872. there?

  873. The

  874. Lord

  875. brought

  876. it

  877. about.

  878. The

  879. Lord was

  880. with

  881. Job

  882. and

  883. assured

  884. that he

  885. would

  886. persevere

  887. and not

  888. give up

  889. and that

  890. he would

  891. receive.

  892. Now I'm

  893. sure that

  894. in your

  895. suffering

  896. sometimes we

  897. wonder if I'm

  898. ever going to

  899. make it.

  900. Some days

  901. it's like

  902. we're on a

  903. knife edge

  904. and we

  905. can take

  906. no more.

  907. But the

  908. God of

  909. Job

  910. is our

  911. God too.

  912. He is

  913. faithful

  914. and he

  915. will bring

  916. about what

  917. he promised.

  918. So rest

  919. in the

  920. absolute

  921. certainty

  922. that God

  923. will not

  924. fail you

  925. or forget

  926. you

  927. but will

  928. ensure that

  929. all suffering

  930. will end.

  931. doubt.

  932. And if

  933. we do

  934. doubt

  935. and sometimes

  936. we do

  937. we're given

  938. two great

  939. assurances

  940. of why the

  941. Lord is

  942. faithful.

  943. Here's the

  944. first one.

  945. It comes at

  946. the end of

  947. verse 11.

  948. The Lord

  949. is full

  950. of compassion.

  951. You know

  952. when God

  953. introduced

  954. himself at

  955. the beginning

  956. of the

  957. Bible story

  958. he reveals

  959. who he is

  960. and this is

  961. what he says

  962. about his

  963. name,

  964. about his

  965. character.

  966. He says

  967. the Lord

  968. the Lord

  969. the compassionate

  970. and gracious

  971. God.

  972. That's how

  973. God wants

  974. us to know

  975. him.

  976. He says

  977. I am

  978. compassion.

  979. You see

  980. compassion

  981. expresses that

  982. deep love

  983. and concern

  984. he has for

  985. his people.

  986. It's a

  987. gut reaction

  988. to our

  989. need.

  990. God's

  991. natural

  992. instinct

  993. is to

  994. enter

  995. into our

  996. hurts.

  997. He moves

  998. towards

  999. sufferers

  1000. not away

  1001. from them.

  1002. He embraces

  1003. the weak.

  1004. He doesn't

  1005. shun them.

  1006. He holds

  1007. close the

  1008. broken.

  1009. He doesn't

  1010. rebuke

  1011. them.

  1012. a friend

  1013. of mine

  1014. was telling

  1015. me just

  1016. this week

  1017. down at

  1018. the GAA

  1019. grounds,

  1020. Wednesday

  1021. night was

  1022. a first

  1023. night for

  1024. mums to

  1025. try out

  1026. GAA.

  1027. And there

  1028. was about

  1029. 90 of them

  1030. there on

  1031. the pitch.

  1032. All the

  1033. children were

  1034. corralled

  1035. into an

  1036. enclosed

  1037. area

  1038. nearby.

  1039. And in

  1040. the midst

  1041. of all

  1042. the noise

  1043. and all

  1044. the games

  1045. and activity

  1046. there was

  1047. just a

  1048. silence.

  1049. And then

  1050. there was

  1051. a cry

  1052. went out.

  1053. Mom!

  1054. And they

  1055. said in

  1056. unison these

  1057. 90 mums

  1058. just turned

  1059. around and

  1060. just started

  1061. walking

  1062. towards where

  1063. all the

  1064. kids were

  1065. corralled.

  1066. Compassion.

  1067. compassion.

  1068. Moving

  1069. towards

  1070. the

  1071. suffering.

  1072. God

  1073. knows your

  1074. cry before

  1075. a word is

  1076. even spoken.

  1077. Your

  1078. suffering

  1079. matters to

  1080. God.

  1081. Compassion

  1082. is his

  1083. reaction.

  1084. But he's

  1085. not just

  1086. full of

  1087. compassion.

  1088. He is

  1089. full of

  1090. mercy.

  1091. Full of

  1092. mercy.

  1093. God's

  1094. mercies are

  1095. seen every

  1096. day in

  1097. the air we

  1098. breathe and

  1099. the food we

  1100. eat.

  1101. He doesn't

  1102. come looking

  1103. for faults.

  1104. He doesn't

  1105. look for a

  1106. reason to

  1107. blame.

  1108. He doesn't

  1109. come and

  1110. say come

  1111. on get on

  1112. with it

  1113. try harder.

  1114. No he

  1115. gives to

  1116. us regardless

  1117. of what we've

  1118. done or

  1119. how we

  1120. are.

  1121. One writer

  1122. puts it

  1123. like this

  1124. God never

  1125. ever stops

  1126. being God.

  1127. He never

  1128. stops being

  1129. merciful.

  1130. Even when

  1131. the clouds of

  1132. darkness loom

  1133. his mercies

  1134. never cease.

  1135. Every day

  1136. we wake up

  1137. with a

  1138. heartache

  1139. God's

  1140. mercy meets

  1141. us.

  1142. every

  1143. hardship we

  1144. encounter

  1145. God's

  1146. mercy will

  1147. be new.

  1148. The Lord

  1149. is full of

  1150. compassion and

  1151. mercy.

  1152. And if

  1153. ever we

  1154. should doubt

  1155. it look at

  1156. the hands

  1157. of Calvary

  1158. where Christ

  1159. entered with

  1160. compassion

  1161. into the

  1162. mess and

  1163. brokenness of

  1164. our lives

  1165. and in

  1166. his mercy

  1167. and kindness

  1168. took our

  1169. sin upon

  1170. himself and

  1171. died for

  1172. us.

  1173. If God

  1174. gave us the

  1175. greatest gift

  1176. his son

  1177. how much

  1178. more

  1179. will he

  1180. graciously give

  1181. to us

  1182. all that we

  1183. need.

  1184. Compassion

  1185. and mercy

  1186. moment by

  1187. moment

  1188. day after

  1189. day

  1190. year after

  1191. year.

  1192. rest in

  1193. the absolute

  1194. certainty

  1195. that God

  1196. will not

  1197. forget you

  1198. or fail

  1199. you but

  1200. will ensure

  1201. that all

  1202. suffering will

  1203. end.

  1204. So

  1205. patience

  1206. the message

  1207. is clear

  1208. in the face

  1209. of our

  1210. suffering

  1211. be patient

  1212. verse 12

  1213. above all

  1214. my brothers

  1215. and sisters

  1216. do not

  1217. swear

  1218. he's not

  1219. talking here

  1220. about bad

  1221. language but

  1222. he's saying

  1223. don't promise

  1224. don't make

  1225. promises

  1226. don't

  1227. don't make

  1228. promises by

  1229. heaven or by

  1230. earth or

  1231. anything else.

  1232. Well what

  1233. could he mean

  1234. what's he on

  1235. about well

  1236. when we

  1237. face suffering

  1238. we can easily

  1239. make rash

  1240. promises

  1241. can't we

  1242. Lord if you

  1243. if you just

  1244. get me through

  1245. this difficulty

  1246. I promise

  1247. I'll read

  1248. my Bible

  1249. more.

  1250. Lord if

  1251. you just

  1252. heal me

  1253. I'm going

  1254. to serve

  1255. more in

  1256. the church.

  1257. Lord if

  1258. you would

  1259. just end

  1260. this difficulty

  1261. I promise

  1262. I will give

  1263. more.

  1264. You ever

  1265. bartered

  1266. with God

  1267. like that?

  1268. I have.

  1269. Lord if

  1270. you just

  1271. stop the

  1272. suffering I

  1273. promise I

  1274. will do

  1275. better I'll

  1276. be good.

  1277. The way

  1278. to deal

  1279. with suffering

  1280. is not to

  1281. try and

  1282. force God

  1283. with empty

  1284. promises.

  1285. We believe

  1286. his promises.

  1287. We trust

  1288. his promises.

  1289. Don't make

  1290. rash promises

  1291. about ourselves

  1292. of things

  1293. we can do

  1294. which we

  1295. will never

  1296. keep.

  1297. Turn

  1298. instead to

  1299. God

  1300. who is

  1301. coming.

  1302. The God

  1303. who is

  1304. faithful.

  1305. End of

  1306. verse 12

  1307. all you need

  1308. to say is a

  1309. simple yes

  1310. or no

  1311. otherwise

  1312. you will be

  1313. condemned.

  1314. Just say

  1315. yes to

  1316. God's

  1317. promise

  1318. no to

  1319. the making

  1320. of our

  1321. kinds of

  1322. promises.

  1323. Lord I

  1324. trust you.

  1325. I don't

  1326. understand it

  1327. all.

  1328. But you

  1329. are coming.

  1330. Suffering

  1331. will end.

  1332. And as I

  1333. wait

  1334. you are

  1335. faithful.

  1336. You are

  1337. full of

  1338. compassion and

  1339. mercy.

  1340. So

  1341. together

  1342. let us

  1343. rest in the

  1344. absolute

  1345. certainty

  1346. that God

  1347. will not

  1348. forget you

  1349. or fail

  1350. you but

  1351. will ensure

  1352. that all

  1353. suffering will

  1354. end.

  1355. Let's

  1356. pray.

  1357. Father you

  1358. know

  1359. the struggle

  1360. and the

  1361. trial

  1362. that each

  1363. one here

  1364. may face.

  1365. Father you

  1366. know the

  1367. ones that

  1368. we can

  1369. share and

  1370. the inner

  1371. ones the

  1372. deep ones

  1373. that we

  1374. feel we

  1375. can't.

  1376. Thank you

  1377. that you

  1378. understand us.

  1379. Thank you

  1380. that you

  1381. care for

  1382. us.

  1383. Thank you

  1384. that you

  1385. move towards

  1386. us and

  1387. you react

  1388. with

  1389. compassion

  1390. and mercy.

  1391. Thank you

  1392. father for

  1393. the great

  1394. and wonderful

  1395. promise

  1396. that you

  1397. are coming

  1398. the new

  1399. heavens and

  1400. the new

  1401. creation

  1402. will one

  1403. day be

  1404. ours to

  1405. enjoy

  1406. and on

  1407. that day

  1408. it'll

  1409. all be

  1410. over.

  1411. Father

  1412. please give

  1413. us strength

  1414. that we

  1415. may trust

  1416. your promise

  1417. that you

  1418. will faithfully

  1419. keep us

  1420. till that

  1421. end.

  1422. We praise

  1423. you and

  1424. thank you

  1425. in Jesus

  1426. name.

  1427. Amen.

  1428. Well I

  1429. couldn't find

  1430. a hymn

  1431. about

  1432. patience

  1433. but I

  1434. think it

  1435. does say

  1436. something

  1437. about

  1438. patience

  1439. and we

  1440. can sing

  1441. about

  1442. the

  1443. peace

  1444. that we

  1445. have

  1446. from

  1447. the

  1448. Lord.
