  1. Well, good morning. It's great to see you all today. Beautiful sunny day. I hope you had a good day yesterday and that you will enjoy the day today.

  2. Let's open our Bibles then to this passage, Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  3. Thank you. I'm going to pray and ask for God to help us as we look at his word together. Let's pray again.

  4. Father, thank you for this beautiful day. Thank you for the sun that you created.

  5. And we thank you for your spirit that is now present with us. And we pray that his light would shine in our hearts and warm us afresh to the wonder of your amazing grace.

  6. So help us now, we pray in Jesus name. Amen.

  7. So we're starting a new series today, asking the question, the big question is, what is a Christian?

  8. And over the next few weeks, we're going to take some of the main themes that tell us what a Christian is.

  9. So you can think of it like this. Think of an orange. OK, the orange is the Christian.

  10. And we're going to take a segment of that piece and we're going to look at it week by week to see what it has to say.

  11. And then hopefully we'll have a complete picture of what a Christian is.

  12. So this morning, we're going to see that a Christian is someone who is saved by grace.

  13. So look at the end of verse five with me.

  14. It is by grace you have been saved.

  15. And in case we forget, it's repeated for us in verse eight.

  16. For it is by grace you have been saved.

  17. Now, grace is a word we use quite a bit.

  18. And so I've got a definition here. You can see it on screen.

  19. You can tell me what you think of it later. Maybe you can come up with something better.

  20. But here we go. Grace means God's joyful acceptance of us.

  21. Not because we have earned it or deserved it.

  22. But because he delights to give it to us freely at Christ's expense.

  23. God joyfully accepts us.

  24. He delights to give us his grace.

  25. You see, grace is what makes us a Christian.

  26. We don't become a Christian by birth or our heritage or our tradition.

  27. It's not even my decision that I become a Christian.

  28. It's not by our effort or our performance.

  29. So God looks down and says, oh, well, they've read their Bible.

  30. They've been going to church.

  31. I'll make them a Christian.

  32. It's not by our effort.

  33. Do you see what it says in verse nine?

  34. Thank you, Daniel.

  35. Do you see what it says in verse nine?

  36. Not by works so that no one can boast.

  37. If we're a Christian today, it's because of God's kindness and goodness, which is unearned and undeserved.

  38. So we're going to unpack that this morning by looking at three big themes.

  39. And each of them have a number of points, but we're going to go through them quickly.

  40. So you can follow along on the screen or write in your notes.

  41. So here's the first big idea this morning.

  42. First, we're dead without grace.

  43. But you say, no, I'm quite alive today.

  44. I'm speaking.

  45. I can hear.

  46. No, the writer is describing what life is like before we become a Christian.

  47. OK, so look at verse one.

  48. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.

  49. It's like we're spiritual zombies.

  50. You've seen some of those films or the programs on TV.

  51. We are literally the walking dead.

  52. Look at what our dead life is like.

  53. We're dead in sin.

  54. And it's described in three ways.

  55. First, we follow the ways of the world.

  56. Let's read verses one and two.

  57. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you used to live when you followed the ways of the world.

  58. The ways of the world is a way, is a path that walks away from God.

  59. It's a life that resists and rejects God's rule.

  60. But not only do we follow the ways of the world.

  61. Keep with me.

  62. We follow the way of the devil.

  63. Look at the rest of verse two.

  64. We follow the ways of this world and we follow the ruler of the kingdom of the air.

  65. You know who that is, the ruler of the kingdom of the air?

  66. It's the devil.

  67. And his work is to tell us lies.

  68. The kind of lies that he's used from the very beginning of time.

  69. A lie that says things like, you can be like God.

  70. You decide what is right and wrong.

  71. And we can't help but listen to him and follow him and live disobedient lives.

  72. So we follow the ways of the world.

  73. We follow the way of the devil.

  74. And third, we follow the way of our desires.

  75. Look at verse three.

  76. All of us also lived among them at one time.

  77. So again, he's talking about a life before you become a Christian.

  78. This is what it's like.

  79. You are gratifying the cravings of your flesh and following its desires and thoughts.

  80. It's very simply saying that we want, we work, we will pursue for whatever we desire.

  81. And the problem is, before we're a Christian, the only thing we desire is what I want for me.

  82. We don't desire God.

  83. Essentially, we live with self at the centre.

  84. We remove God from the centre and put ourselves at the centre.

  85. We feed and we pursue our selfish desires.

  86. Now this is what it means to be spiritually dead.

  87. It's like we've joined humanity's great protest against God.

  88. You've seen protests walking down the streets.

  89. Well, we're part of this great big cosmic march.

  90. And we're all holding up our placard saying,

  91. My way, not God's way.

  92. My will, not God's will.

  93. We're like spiritual zombies.

  94. We're the walking dead.

  95. We don't want or desire to walk any other way.

  96. And without grace, that's me and that's you.

  97. What do you think about that?

  98. Do you like that diagnosis?

  99. Well, there's more to it.

  100. Because that puts us into a very, very difficult situation.

  101. We are deserving of God's wrath.

  102. Did you see that?

  103. The end of verse 3?

  104. For those who follow the ways of the world, the way of the devil and the way of our desires.

  105. Look at the rest of verse 3.

  106. We, like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.

  107. Well, I know we don't like to talk about wrath and God being anger.

  108. Surely God's a God of love.

  109. Yes, he is.

  110. But he's a loving God.

  111. He's not temper-like.

  112. He doesn't lose his control.

  113. You can't press God's buttons by living a certain way and he just responds in an outrage.

  114. No, God's wrath is fair.

  115. It's just.

  116. It's been reasoned.

  117. It's God's response to people like us who follow the way of the world,

  118. who follow the lies of the devil,

  119. and who follow the ways of our own desires.

  120. By our nature, a nature that we're born with and a nature that we live with,

  121. we're all set against God.

  122. And that puts us on a collision course with God.

  123. We're under his justice.

  124. And God can't overlook our sin.

  125. He can't pretend, oh, just live as you want, it's all right.

  126. No, God cannot tolerate our protest forever.

  127. In other words, if we follow the world,

  128. if we follow the devil,

  129. and if we follow our own desires,

  130. it means we're taking a path, we're walking a path,

  131. that will lead us to hell.

  132. A life separated from God and his goodness.

  133. And all that is beautiful forever.

  134. Now, it's going to get worse.

  135. Follow with me.

  136. Because if we're spiritually dead,

  137. that means you and I can't change our predicament,

  138. and nor do we actually want to change.

  139. Just think about this with me for a minute.

  140. Just think of a food,

  141. a particular food that you really don't like.

  142. Okay?

  143. Think of a food you don't like.

  144. Mine is sandwich spread.

  145. Do you ever eat that stuff?

  146. It's a paste with cut up vegetables

  147. and horrible things like celery and peppers

  148. in a detestable sauce.

  149. It says cream sauce.

  150. No, it's not cream sauce.

  151. I hate sandwich spread.

  152. I have no desire for it.

  153. I don't even want to like it.

  154. If there was a course put on and said,

  155. come to this course and we will help you like sandwich spread.

  156. No, I'm not going to like it.

  157. Put it anywhere near me

  158. and I'm going to run in the opposite direction.

  159. I don't want sandwich spread.

  160. Do you believe that truth about ourselves before we are Christians?

  161. Well, if you don't believe what I've tried to say,

  162. I'm going to say,

  163. I'm going to say,

  164. I'm going to say,

  165. I have no desire for God.

  166. I do not even want to desire God.

  167. put God anywhere near me

  168. and I'm going to run away.

  169. I don't want it.

  170. Do you believe that truth about ourselves before we are Christians?

  171. Well, if you don't believe what I've tried to illustrate,

  172. go back to Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  173. Go back a few pages to Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  174. The whole case at the beginning of Romans is showing that everybody,

  175. no matter our background, our religion, our culture,

  176. that we're all guilty before God.

  177. We're going to pick it up in verse 10.

  178. Romans chapter 3 in verse 10.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  179. As it is written,

  180. There is no one righteous,

  181. not even one.

  182. There is no one who understands.

  183. There is no one who seeks God.

  184. Do you believe that?

  185. Before you are a Christian,

  186. you do not seek God.

  187. You've no desire for him.

  188. Let's go back to Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  189. One writer put it like this.

  190. No one prompted by their own decision and acting

  191. in their own ability

  192. wants to find God.

  193. We say,

  194. no, no, no, no.

  195. I did.

  196. I wanted to find God.

  197. Well, no, no, no, no.

  198. No, no, no, no.

  199. No, no, no, no, no, no.

  200. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

  201. More about that later in a minute.

  202. You see, left in our dead state,

  203. we do not seek God.

  204. Dead people cannot make themselves alive again.

  205. Do you know anybody who made themselves rise from the dead?

  206. Just as we can't do that physically,

  207. so we can't make ourselves spiritually alive.

  208. We're dead.

  209. Now the question is,

  210. will you accept God's diagnosis of your life?

  211. I'm dead in my sins,

  212. deserving of God's wrath.

  213. Without grace,

  214. this is who I am.

  215. Well,

  216. doesn't sound great, does it?

  217. But we need to hear

  218. what God says.

  219. Second,

  220. saved by grace,

  221. dead without grace,

  222. saved by grace.

  223. Let's pick it up in verse 4.

  224. But,

  225. so something's changed.

  226. There's an intervention.

  227. Something has happened.

  228. God has done something.

  229. Verse 4.

  230. But,

  231. because of his great love for us,

  232. God,

  233. who is rich in mercy,

  234. made us

  235. alive.

  236. He is

  237. rich

  238. rich in mercy.

  239. God didn't respond

  240. because we were pleading for mercy.

  241. No,

  242. God acted.

  243. God took the initiative.

  244. God moved towards us

  245. because

  246. he

  247. is rich in mercy.

  248. And look at how God intervened in our life.

  249. it's amazing.

  250. It's beautiful.

  251. Three things.

  252. First,

  253. he made us alive

  254. with Christ.

  255. Let's read those couple of verses again.

  256. Verse 4.

  257. Because of his great love for us,

  258. God,

  259. who is rich in mercy,

  260. made us alive with Christ,

  261. even when we were dead

  262. in our transgressions.

  263. We were spiritually dead,

  264. but now he says,

  265. you can be made alive.

  266. Well,

  267. how does that happen?

  268. Well,

  269. when Christ

  270. died on the cross,

  271. something extraordinary

  272. took place.

  273. Christ

  274. took my

  275. dead in sin

  276. kind of life

  277. and he made it his own.

  278. It was as if

  279. Christ,

  280. or not as if,

  281. it was

  282. that Christ

  283. was treated

  284. as someone

  285. who followed

  286. the ways of the world,

  287. followed the way

  288. of the devil,

  289. and followed

  290. his own desires.

  291. He took

  292. my dead

  293. in sin

  294. life

  295. and the wrath

  296. of God,

  297. the judgment

  298. that I deserve,

  299. fell

  300. on Christ

  301. and was absorbed

  302. by him.

  303. My spiritual

  304. dead life

  305. was put

  306. to death

  307. in the death

  308. of Jesus.

  309. My dead

  310. life

  311. was put

  312. to death.

  313. But more

  314. than that,

  315. not only

  316. were we made

  317. alive,

  318. we were

  319. raised

  320. with Christ.

  321. Look at

  322. verse 6.

  323. And God

  324. raised us

  325. up

  326. with Christ.

  327. When Christ

  328. died on the

  329. cross,

  330. physically

  331. he died,

  332. he was raised

  333. from the dead,

  334. so he's saying

  335. you too

  336. had a

  337. spiritual

  338. resurrection

  339. in your life.

  340. We

  341. came alive

  342. to God.

  343. We were

  344. drawn to him.

  345. we had

  346. a desire

  347. for him.

  348. We began

  349. to pursue

  350. him.

  351. God

  352. breathed

  353. new life

  354. into our

  355. spiritual

  356. dead

  357. lives.

  358. He

  359. resurrected

  360. us.

  361. We were

  362. dead in our

  363. sin.

  364. Now we've

  365. been made

  366. alive

  367. with Christ.

  368. But he also

  369. did something

  370. more wonderful

  371. again.

  372. Do you see it

  373. there,

  374. the rest

  375. of verse

  376. 6?

  377. We were

  378. raised up

  379. with Christ.

  380. Not just

  381. raised with

  382. him, but

  383. he seated

  384. us with

  385. him in

  386. the heavenly

  387. realms in

  388. Christ Jesus.

  389. When Christ

  390. was raised,

  391. he ascended

  392. into heaven

  393. and was

  394. seated at the

  395. right hand of

  396. the Father.

  397. That's a

  398. position of

  399. all power and

  400. authority.

  401. God

  402. and because

  403. we have

  404. been

  405. spiritually

  406. raised and

  407. given new

  408. life, we

  409. are seated

  410. with him.

  411. In other

  412. words, God

  413. now treats

  414. us as his

  415. own son.

  416. Because my

  417. dead in sin

  418. life was

  419. dealt with,

  420. because I

  421. now have the

  422. life of

  423. Christ, I

  424. am now

  425. welcomed, I

  426. am now

  427. accepted, I

  428. am now

  429. treasured.

  430. That's

  431. what happens

  432. when God,

  433. who is rich

  434. in mercy,

  435. reaches out

  436. and intervenes

  437. into our

  438. life.

  439. God takes

  440. us from the

  441. path of

  442. walking the

  443. way of the

  444. dead.

  445. He makes

  446. us alive

  447. and rises

  448. us up, so

  449. we now walk

  450. a new path.

  451. We now have

  452. desires for

  453. God and

  454. loves for

  455. God.

  456. We seek

  457. him, we

  458. pursue him.

  459. we wonderfully

  460. receive his

  461. grace that

  462. saves us.

  463. We are

  464. recipients of

  465. God's grace.

  466. Look at

  467. verse 7 with

  468. me.

  469. God did

  470. all this.

  471. God did

  472. us making

  473. alive,

  474. resurrecting

  475. us, seating

  476. us with

  477. him.

  478. He did

  479. all of

  480. that work

  481. for us,

  482. verse 7,

  483. in order

  484. that in

  485. the coming

  486. ages, he

  487. might show

  488. the incomparable

  489. riches of

  490. his grace

  491. expressed in

  492. his kindness

  493. to us in

  494. Christ Jesus.

  495. God did

  496. this.

  497. God acts

  498. in grace

  499. towards people

  500. like us

  501. to show

  502. to a

  503. watching

  504. world

  505. how

  506. gracious

  507. God is.

  508. God's

  509. grace.

  510. It's like

  511. we become

  512. a living

  513. display

  514. of God's

  515. grace.

  516. Think of

  517. it like

  518. this.

  519. When an

  520. artist, for

  521. those of

  522. you who

  523. can draw

  524. and paint

  525. and all

  526. that sort

  527. of thing,

  528. when you're

  529. finished your

  530. work,

  531. you hang

  532. it up,

  533. don't you?

  534. A great

  535. artist will

  536. be able to

  537. hang it up

  538. in a

  539. gallery.

  540. They put

  541. their artwork

  542. on display

  543. for people

  544. to be able

  545. to see.

  546. And as

  547. people walk

  548. around and

  549. stop and

  550. sit and

  551. look at

  552. these beautiful

  553. pictures,

  554. they marvel

  555. at the

  556. picture.

  557. But not

  558. just at the

  559. picture,

  560. they marvel

  561. at the

  562. artist.

  563. You see,

  564. when you

  565. look at the

  566. picture,

  567. you celebrate

  568. the artist.

  569. But when

  570. God acts

  571. in grace

  572. towards us,

  573. it's like

  574. he puts

  575. us on

  576. display

  577. before a

  578. watching world.

  579. He hangs

  580. us up and

  581. says,

  582. look!

  583. Not so

  584. that people

  585. would think

  586. how great

  587. we are,

  588. but people

  589. will look

  590. at us

  591. and see

  592. how amazing

  593. and how

  594. rich

  595. God's

  596. grace is

  597. to people

  598. like us.

  599. That God

  600. could change

  601. us and

  602. save us.

  603. that's

  604. worth putting

  605. on display

  606. to the

  607. world.

  608. You see,

  609. the wonder

  610. is,

  611. God delights

  612. in giving

  613. grace to

  614. dead in

  615. sin,

  616. deserving of

  617. wrath,

  618. people like

  619. us.

  620. God

  621. saves us

  622. by grace

  623. so that

  624. we might

  625. praise him.

  626. Now,

  627. this is all

  628. good news.

  629. It's great

  630. news.

  631. Left to

  632. ourselves,

  633. we're never

  634. going to

  635. choose God.

  636. We enter

  637. the world

  638. spiritually

  639. dead.

  640. As one

  641. writer put

  642. it,

  643. you can

  644. see this

  645. on screen,

  646. just as

  647. the physically

  648. dead can't

  649. communicate

  650. with the

  651. living,

  652. so also

  653. those who

  654. are spiritually

  655. dead

  656. cannot

  657. communicate

  658. with the

  659. eternal

  660. living God.

  661. God.

  662. But when

  663. God,

  664. who is

  665. rich in

  666. mercy,

  667. takes the

  668. initiative and

  669. intervenes in

  670. your life,

  671. he makes you

  672. alive to

  673. God.

  674. He gives

  675. you a new

  676. life.

  677. He sparks

  678. off a new

  679. beginning where

  680. you begin to

  681. pursue,

  682. seek,

  683. and desire

  684. God.

  685. God,

  686. who is rich

  687. in mercy,

  688. saves us

  689. by grace.

  690. Now the

  691. big question

  692. here is,

  693. will you

  694. accept what

  695. God has

  696. done for

  697. you?

  698. The empty

  699. wisdom of

  700. the world

  701. says,

  702. no, no,

  703. no, no,

  704. I don't

  705. need God.

  706. I can do

  707. it alone.

  708. But the

  709. words of

  710. God to

  711. us today

  712. is saying,

  713. Christ is

  714. everything you

  715. need,

  716. and I give

  717. him to you

  718. freely.

  719. so dead

  720. without

  721. grace,

  722. saved

  723. by grace,

  724. and then

  725. third,

  726. experiencing

  727. forever

  728. grace.

  729. So the

  730. question we

  731. want to ask

  732. here is,

  733. as we look

  734. at this

  735. last part,

  736. is how

  737. do we

  738. get to

  739. experience

  740. grace?

  741. How can

  742. this be

  743. amazing

  744. grace for

  745. me?

  746. Well,

  747. look at

  748. verse

  749. 8.

  750. For it

  751. is by

  752. grace you

  753. have been

  754. saved,

  755. through

  756. faith,

  757. and this

  758. is not

  759. from

  760. yourself,

  761. it is

  762. the gift

  763. of God.

  764. Experiencing

  765. grace is

  766. a beautiful

  767. gift from

  768. God to

  769. you.

  770. these

  771. gifts

  772. come in

  773. three ways.

  774. We're

  775. going to

  776. just look

  777. at three

  778. here.

  779. First,

  780. the gift

  781. of a

  782. new

  783. faith.

  784. Do you

  785. see it

  786. there in

  787. verse

  788. 8?

  789. It is

  790. by grace

  791. you've

  792. been

  793. saved,

  794. through

  795. faith,

  796. and this

  797. is not

  798. from

  799. yourselves,

  800. it is

  801. the gift

  802. of God.

  803. God's

  804. intervening

  805. grace is

  806. a gift,

  807. and the

  808. faith to

  809. believe and

  810. the faith

  811. to trust

  812. is also

  813. a gift.

  814. Look closely

  815. at verse

  816. 8.

  817. It says,

  818. this is

  819. not from

  820. yourselves.

  821. Well,

  822. what's not

  823. from

  824. ourselves?

  825. Faith

  826. is not

  827. from

  828. yourself.

  829. Faith

  830. is gift

  831. from God.

  832. It's not

  833. something we

  834. kind of

  835. build up

  836. within

  837. ourselves

  838. or motivate

  839. ourselves

  840. from within.

  841. Faith is

  842. a gift

  843. from God

  844. so that

  845. you can

  846. respond to

  847. him.

  848. When I

  849. was spiritually

  850. dead,

  851. my faith

  852. was in

  853. me,

  854. and in

  855. nobody else

  856. but me.

  857. I depended

  858. on self.

  859. Now I've

  860. been given

  861. a new

  862. faith,

  863. a faith

  864. that enables

  865. me to

  866. trust only

  867. in Christ

  868. and his

  869. grace to

  870. me.

  871. So we've

  872. been given

  873. a gift

  874. of faith.

  875. We've

  876. also been

  877. given a

  878. gift of

  879. a new

  880. status.

  881. Look at

  882. verse 10.

  883. For we

  884. are God's

  885. handiwork.

  886. Can you

  887. consider what

  888. that means?

  889. Literally,

  890. God is saying

  891. to you,

  892. if you're

  893. a Christian,

  894. you are

  895. a work

  896. of art.

  897. You are

  898. my

  899. masterpiece.

  900. God has

  901. taken people

  902. like us

  903. and created

  904. us

  905. and worked

  906. in us

  907. who deserve

  908. God's

  909. wrath

  910. to be

  911. recipients

  912. of his

  913. grace.

  914. And God's

  915. assessment,

  916. because he's

  917. worked in

  918. us,

  919. when he

  920. looks at

  921. us and

  922. inspects

  923. us,

  924. he sees

  925. no flaws,

  926. nothing

  927. wrong,

  928. because you

  929. are his

  930. masterpiece.

  931. You are

  932. loved,

  933. treasured,

  934. accepted,

  935. welcomed,

  936. saved for

  937. other.

  938. In other

  939. words,

  940. you have

  941. been given

  942. the same

  943. status as

  944. the Son,

  945. Jesus Christ.

  946. That means

  947. God treats

  948. you as

  949. his own

  950. dear Son.

  951. No matter

  952. how much

  953. you fail,

  954. no matter

  955. how much

  956. you fall,

  957. that status

  958. will not

  959. change.

  960. What an

  961. incredible

  962. gift.

  963. New faith,

  964. new status,

  965. what we

  966. call the

  967. last one,

  968. a new

  969. purpose.

  970. Read verse

  971. 10 with me

  972. again.

  973. for we

  974. are God's

  975. handiwork,

  976. created in

  977. Christ Jesus

  978. to do

  979. good works,

  980. which God

  981. prepared in

  982. advance for

  983. us to do.

  984. We do

  985. good works.

  986. we serve

  987. God,

  988. not to

  989. earn his

  990. favour,

  991. not to

  992. earn his

  993. grace,

  994. not to

  995. get God's

  996. attention and

  997. say,

  998. I'm here,

  999. give me your

  1000. grace,

  1001. did you see

  1002. what I

  1003. did?

  1004. No,

  1005. we serve

  1006. because we

  1007. have received

  1008. grace.

  1009. It's a

  1010. response.

  1011. When we

  1012. were spiritually

  1013. dead,

  1014. we served

  1015. self.

  1016. Look back

  1017. at verse

  1018. three if you

  1019. need reminded.

  1020. we lived

  1021. gratifying the

  1022. cravings of

  1023. our flesh

  1024. and following

  1025. its desires

  1026. and thoughts.

  1027. We served

  1028. self.

  1029. We didn't

  1030. serve God,

  1031. but now

  1032. we've been

  1033. given a new

  1034. purpose.

  1035. We serve

  1036. the God

  1037. who saved

  1038. us.

  1039. Because I

  1040. am loved,

  1041. I now

  1042. love him.

  1043. Because I've

  1044. been accepted,

  1045. I now want

  1046. to obey

  1047. him.

  1048. Because I'm

  1049. his child,

  1050. I want

  1051. to hear

  1052. his voice

  1053. and I

  1054. want to

  1055. follow his

  1056. way.

  1057. Because I've

  1058. been saved

  1059. by grace,

  1060. I want to

  1061. live for

  1062. him.

  1063. Now,

  1064. if all

  1065. this is a

  1066. gift from

  1067. God,

  1068. and it

  1069. is,

  1070. what's that

  1071. going to

  1072. mean?

  1073. If it's

  1074. all a

  1075. gift,

  1076. what does

  1077. that mean

  1078. for us?

  1079. God's

  1080. grace?

  1081. Well,

  1082. we boast

  1083. in Christ

  1084. alone.

  1085. We boast

  1086. in his

  1087. grace.

  1088. Let's read

  1089. verses 8

  1090. and 9

  1091. and you'll

  1092. pick it

  1093. up and

  1094. you'll

  1095. get the

  1096. focus here.

  1097. For it

  1098. is by

  1099. grace you

  1100. have been

  1101. saved,

  1102. through

  1103. faith,

  1104. which is a

  1105. gift,

  1106. it's not

  1107. from yourselves,

  1108. it's from

  1109. God,

  1110. not by

  1111. works,

  1112. not by

  1113. anything we

  1114. can do,

  1115. by your

  1116. performance

  1117. or anything

  1118. else,

  1119. so that

  1120. no one

  1121. can boast.

  1122. You see,

  1123. when we

  1124. experience

  1125. God's

  1126. grace,

  1127. there is

  1128. no longer

  1129. any I

  1130. or me.

  1131. Think this

  1132. through with

  1133. me as

  1134. we try

  1135. to capture

  1136. what it

  1137. means to

  1138. boast in

  1139. grace.

  1140. If somebody

  1141. says to

  1142. you,

  1143. why are

  1144. you a

  1145. Christian?

  1146. what would

  1147. you say?

  1148. Well,

  1149. because I

  1150. was searching

  1151. or seeking

  1152. God,

  1153. because I

  1154. decided to

  1155. follow Jesus.

  1156. Well,

  1157. if you say

  1158. anything like

  1159. that,

  1160. you know

  1161. what,

  1162. you're

  1163. boasting

  1164. in self,

  1165. you're

  1166. trusting

  1167. in self.

  1168. If you

  1169. seek God,

  1170. it's only

  1171. because God

  1172. sought you

  1173. first.

  1174. If you

  1175. decide to

  1176. follow Jesus,

  1177. it's

  1178. because God

  1179. has enabled

  1180. you to

  1181. follow Jesus.

  1182. Or put it

  1183. this way,

  1184. if someone

  1185. says,

  1186. why are you

  1187. a Christian

  1188. and they're

  1189. not a

  1190. Christian?

  1191. And you

  1192. answer something

  1193. like this,

  1194. well,

  1195. because I

  1196. had faith

  1197. or because

  1198. I chose

  1199. God.

  1200. Well,

  1201. again,

  1202. we're doing

  1203. it,

  1204. we're boasting

  1205. in self.

  1206. We're

  1207. saying,

  1208. we're

  1209. basically

  1210. saying,

  1211. if only

  1212. they had

  1213. faith like

  1214. I had

  1215. faith,

  1216. if only

  1217. they did

  1218. what I

  1219. did,

  1220. they would

  1221. be saved

  1222. too.

  1223. No,

  1224. if you

  1225. have

  1226. faith,

  1227. it's

  1228. because God

  1229. gave you

  1230. faith.

  1231. It's all

  1232. a gift.

  1233. We can't

  1234. boast in

  1235. ourself

  1236. for anything.

  1237. Now,

  1238. I know

  1239. that greats

  1240. with us,

  1241. we don't

  1242. like that.

  1243. And the

  1244. reason is

  1245. pride.

  1246. But pride

  1247. isn't going

  1248. to save

  1249. you.

  1250. It's going

  1251. to destroy

  1252. you and

  1253. crush you.

  1254. You see,

  1255. when we

  1256. experience

  1257. grace,

  1258. it

  1259. humbles

  1260. you.

  1261. It

  1262. changes us

  1263. from the

  1264. inside out.

  1265. It makes

  1266. us into

  1267. beautiful

  1268. and

  1269. attractive

  1270. people.

  1271. Rather than

  1272. people who

  1273. hide their

  1274. sin and

  1275. pretend that

  1276. sin doesn't

  1277. matter,

  1278. well,

  1279. we now

  1280. begin to

  1281. admit our

  1282. sin and

  1283. we begin

  1284. to repent.

  1285. We run

  1286. to God

  1287. who is

  1288. full of

  1289. grace and

  1290. is rich

  1291. in mercy.

  1292. If we

  1293. experience

  1294. grace,

  1295. it will

  1296. make us

  1297. so humble

  1298. that we

  1299. will no

  1300. longer look

  1301. down on

  1302. anybody and

  1303. say,

  1304. they're

  1305. undeserving

  1306. because God

  1307. gave us

  1308. what we

  1309. don't

  1310. deserve

  1311. and could

  1312. never

  1313. earn.

  1314. It means

  1315. we'll never

  1316. ever again

  1317. write anybody

  1318. off and

  1319. say,

  1320. you know

  1321. what,

  1322. their sin

  1323. and what

  1324. they did,

  1325. they're beyond

  1326. God's

  1327. mercy.

  1328. We don't

  1329. think like

  1330. that because

  1331. God didn't

  1332. write me

  1333. off and

  1334. he didn't

  1335. write you

  1336. off.

  1337. he loved

  1338. you.

  1339. And it

  1340. means we

  1341. will forgive

  1342. those no

  1343. matter what

  1344. wrong they

  1345. do to us

  1346. and we

  1347. will hold

  1348. no grudges

  1349. because God

  1350. loved you

  1351. and forgave

  1352. you and

  1353. dealt with

  1354. your sin

  1355. once and

  1356. for all.

  1357. it'll make

  1358. you humble,

  1359. beautiful

  1360. and attractive.

  1361. You will

  1362. be filled

  1363. with grace

  1364. and you

  1365. will live

  1366. a life

  1367. of grace

  1368. because God

  1371. to you.

  1372. Consider

  1373. this,

  1374. if you

  1375. understand

  1376. grace

  1377. you will

  1378. never boast

  1379. in yourself,

  1380. you will

  1381. only boast

  1382. in Christ

  1383. who achieved

  1384. salvation

  1385. for you.

  1386. So what

  1387. is a

  1388. Christian?

  1389. It's

  1390. someone

  1391. who is

  1392. saved

  1393. by grace.

  1394. Let's

  1416. Amen.

  1417. Amen.

  1418. Amen.

  1419. Father,

  1420. your word

  1421. is so

  1422. simple

  1423. and so

  1424. clear.

  1425. Help us

  1426. to accept

  1427. your

  1428. diagnosis

  1429. of who

  1430. we are

  1431. and what

  1432. we are

  1433. like.

  1434. Help us

  1435. to accept

  1436. what God

  1437. has done

  1438. for us

  1439. who is

  1440. rich

  1441. in mercy

  1442. making

  1443. making us

  1444. alive,

  1445. making us

  1446. to a

  1447. new way

  1448. and

  1449. seating

  1450. us

  1451. with

  1452. Christ.

  1453. Thank you

  1454. for the

  1455. gift of

  1456. faith.

  1457. Thank you

  1458. for the

  1459. new status

  1460. we have,

  1461. a new

  1462. purpose

  1463. to live

  1464. for you.

  1465. and we

  1466. pray and

  1467. ask that

  1468. we would

  1469. experience

  1470. your grace

  1471. more and

  1472. more,

  1473. that it

  1474. would

  1475. humble us

  1476. and change

  1477. us so

  1478. that we

  1479. become more

  1480. beautiful and

  1481. attractive,

  1482. a display

  1483. piece to

  1484. the world

  1485. of how good

  1486. and gracious

  1487. you are.

  1488. Thank you,

  1489. Jesus.

  1490. Amen.

  1491. Well,

  1492. guess what

  1493. we're going

  1494. to sing?

  1495. Amazing

  1496. grace,

  1497. how sweet

  1498. the sound.

  1499. Let's stand

  1500. together as

  1501. we're able

  1502. and let's

  1503. rejoice and

  1504. sing and

  1505. remind ourselves

  1506. of how

  1507. beautiful and

  1508. how great

  1509. God's grace

  1510. to us is.

  1511. Amen.

  1512. Amen.

  1513. Amen.

  1514. Amen.
