  1. Thank you.

  2. So, Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  3. And before we read, I just want to check, did everybody get one of these pieces of paper?

  4. If you didn't get one, it's got practicing dependence on the top.

  5. If you didn't get one, just put up your hand and I think Sarah, is that Sarah?

  6. I haven't got my glasses on.

  7. Oh, they're all gone.

  8. Okay, so just share them out if you have them anyway.

  9. Okay, no need, so having asked if you have one, just put it under your seat now, you're not to read it.

  10. So, we'll read God's word, then we'll pray, and then we'll see what it has to say.

  11. So, let's read.

  12. Hebrews chapter 4, starting in verse 12.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  13. For the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword.

  14. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow.

  15. It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

  16. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight.

  17. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

  18. Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

  19. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to feel sympathy for our weaknesses.

  20. But we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he did not sin.

  21. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

  22. Let's keep our Bibles open.

  23. We're going to talk to God as we pray.

  24. Let's do that now.

  25. Our Father God, we come to you in dependence upon you.

  26. We ask for your help, that your word would be active in our life, and that we may experience your grace.

  27. Help us now, we pray, in Jesus' name.

  28. Amen.

  29. Well, last week we started a new series, and we're asking the big question, what is a Christian?

  30. So over the next few weeks, we're just taking a core theme each week and having a look at what the Bible has to say about it.

  31. Today, we're going to see that a Christian is someone who is dependent on God.

  32. Someone who is dependent on God.

  33. And I'm sure you can think of many ways in which you may describe this, but for our sakes today, and to focus on where we're going in the talk, I'm putting it like this.

  34. Dependence is saying, without God, I do not know what I need, and without God, I cannot receive all that I need.

  35. So without God, I don't know what I need, and without God, I can't receive, I can't get what I need.

  36. And the way in which we express our dependence on God is what we've been doing throughout this morning, both listening to God through his word, the Bible, and speaking to God through prayer.

  37. Because through the word of God, through the Bible, our deepest needs are revealed.

  38. And through prayer to God, our deepest need is received.

  39. So let me say that again.

  40. Through the word of God, our deepest need is revealed.

  41. And through prayer to God, our deepest need is received.

  42. And these two themes are at the heart of our text.

  43. So chapter 4, verse 12, says the word of God is alive and active.

  44. End of verse 12, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

  45. So you see, God speaks to us through his word, it's active, and it reveals our deepest need.

  46. Then have a look at verse 16.

  47. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

  48. You see, we speak to God in prayer and we receive from God what our deepest needs are.

  49. So what we're going to do this morning is look at these two themes of the word, the Bible, and prayer.

  50. And then we're going to see what dependence on God looks like in practice.

  51. So first, depending on God is listening to God.

  52. Depending on God is listening to God.

  53. Three things are going to help us to know what it means to listen.

  54. First, let's remember that God is a speaking God.

  55. The writer of Hebrews, from chapter 1 onwards, has been urging his readers to listen to God's word.

  56. So have a look with me, chapter 3, verse 7, just to get the context.

  57. So as the Holy Spirit says, today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.

  58. Well, what's the rebellion?

  59. Well, it was that time of testing in the wilderness.

  60. The writer is looking back to when God's people were rescued from slavery in Egypt and were on their way to the promised land.

  61. But not long into their journey, they sought an independence from God.

  62. They stopped listening to the voice of God and listened to their own.

  63. So with that background in mind, look at verse 12.

  64. He says, see to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.

  65. He's challenging us.

  66. Don't have a heart that is closed to the voice of God.

  67. Verse 15.

  68. He wants us to get it.

  69. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.

  70. And in case we've missed the point, he reminds us again, chapter 4, end of verse 7.

  71. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.

  72. You see, we need to be people who have our ears open to listen to God.

  73. And the way in which we primarily hear God speak is through the words that we have before us in our Bible that we're listening to.

  74. It's a little bit like a child's musical book.

  75. Maybe you've had some of these in your house at different times.

  76. When you open those books, you get a little tune that begins to play.

  77. And then as soon as you close it, the music stops.

  78. It's not that the music has gone away.

  79. You just simply need to open the book and then you hear the music again.

  80. Well, in the same way as we open up the Bible and read God's word, guess what?

  81. We hear God speak.

  82. Close that book.

  83. And we silence his voice.

  84. So first, we need to be a people who are listening to the God who speaks.

  85. And when God speaks, God acts.

  86. His words have power.

  87. Look at chapter 4, verse 12.

  88. For the word of God is alive and active.

  89. God's word is living and transforming.

  90. So right now as we hear the word, as we read the word, the word of God is taking effect in your life and in my life right now.

  91. Just as God spoke the universe into existence with words,

  92. so God acts in a powerful and transforming way through his words to us.

  93. Look how the way, look in which the word of God is described.

  94. Continue on in verse 12.

  95. He says the word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword.

  96. Not a sword that you're going to use in battle,

  97. but a sword that you're going to use to cut open.

  98. Continue on.

  99. Verse 12.

  100. The word is sharper than any double-edged sword.

  101. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow.

  102. You see, the point is, God's word is active.

  103. It's not passive.

  104. It's always at work.

  105. It takes effect.

  106. It does what God wants it to do.

  107. Read God's word and God will act in it through your life.

  108. So in what way does God act?

  109. What impact does the word of God have in our life?

  110. Well, God speaks, God acts, and God reveals.

  111. The word has many functions.

  112. So if you're reading the Bible, it'll say things like,

  113. the word of God nourishes you like food,

  114. or it cleans you like water,

  115. or it grows you like a seed in the ground.

  116. And here the focus is primarily on showing us that God's word is a revealing word.

  117. Let's read all of verse 12 to get the point.

  118. For the word of God is alive and active,

  119. sharper than any double-edged sword.

  120. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow.

  121. Here's the revealing part.

  122. It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

  123. God's word, the sharpest of swords,

  124. is like a surgeon's scalpel.

  125. You go into the operating theatre,

  126. and the surgeon will get out his scalpel,

  127. and it cuts right through,

  128. exposing the heart.

  129. What we are really thinking right now,

  130. what we really believe,

  131. God's word reveals the real you.

  132. A friend of mine recently had a heart attack.

  133. No one knew it was coming,

  134. not least himself.

  135. He was a very active guy.

  136. He was big into cycling.

  137. And it wasn't until he had to be rushed in

  138. for emergency surgery

  139. that they opened him up

  140. and discovered all kinds of blockages

  141. in his heart.

  142. The surgeon's scalpel revealed

  143. the problem.

  144. Well, in the same way as we read God's word,

  145. it's saying it cuts right to the heart,

  146. deeper than we could ever imagine,

  147. and it reveals what needs attention,

  148. what needs to be done with our heart.

  149. You see, the big message is this.

  150. Through the word,

  151. whoops, too far.

  152. Well, you just have to listen.

  153. I've missed out a point.

  154. Listen to this.

  155. The big message is,

  156. through the word,

  157. God reveals our deepest need.

  158. Through the word,

  159. God reveals our deepest need.

  160. You see, without God speaking to us,

  161. we're actually incapable of knowing

  162. who we truly are

  163. and what we are in need of.

  164. We're dependent on God

  165. to show us our need.

  166. Look at verse 13.

  167. Nothing in all of creation

  168. is hidden from God's sight.

  169. So everything can be seen.

  170. Every person.

  171. What they're thinking,

  172. what they're doing.

  173. Everything is uncovered

  174. and laid bare before the eyes of him

  175. to whom we must give an account.

  176. God uncovers

  177. what is hidden in our hearts.

  178. He exposes the sin.

  179. He shows us what really matters,

  180. what we need to repent of,

  181. the things that we need to change in our life.

  182. You see, reading the word

  183. is like entering into the surgeon's theatre

  184. where we come humbly

  185. and accept God's diagnosis

  186. of what our hearts are like.

  187. So through the word of God,

  188. our deepest need is revealed.

  189. Second big idea,

  190. depending on God

  191. is not just listening to God,

  192. but speaking to God

  193. in response.

  194. And again, three things

  195. to help us understand

  196. the speaking to God

  197. side of things.

  198. First,

  199. let's notice the access

  200. to God we have.

  201. Look at verse 14.

  202. Therefore,

  203. since we have

  204. a great high priest

  205. who has ascended into heaven,

  206. Jesus,

  207. the Son of God.

  208. Now,

  209. you may remember

  210. that we looked at Hebrews

  211. some time ago.

  212. The high priest

  213. was that person

  214. who was chosen by God

  215. to represent the people

  216. to God.

  217. And though the high priest

  218. was great

  219. great and had many

  220. privileges and responsibilities,

  221. their main responsibility

  222. was to represent the people,

  223. to give them access to God.

  224. But the problem was

  225. every high priest

  226. that was appointed

  227. failed.

  228. They were sinful.

  229. So any access to God

  230. was only partial

  231. and temporary.

  232. They could never enter

  233. into God's presence

  234. fully

  235. and completely.

  236. But we have,

  237. do you notice verse 14?

  238. It says we have

  239. not just a high priest,

  240. but a great

  241. high priest.

  242. One who is better.

  243. One,

  244. look at the end of verse 15,

  245. who did not

  246. sin.

  247. Jesus,

  248. our great high priest,

  249. was perfect.

  250. He never did anything wrong

  251. or thought anything wrong.

  252. In fact,

  253. as we read through Hebrews,

  254. we'll discover

  255. that as the high priest,

  256. he took upon himself

  257. our sin.

  258. And he was judged

  259. in our place

  260. for our sin.

  261. So that we,

  262. now through Jesus,

  263. may have full

  264. and complete access

  265. to God.

  266. That's what it says

  267. in verse 16,

  268. isn't it?

  269. Let us then

  270. approach

  271. God's throne of grace

  272. with confidence.

  273. If we're trusting Christ,

  274. we don't need to fear.

  275. We don't need to hide.

  276. We can come

  277. with confidence.

  278. Isn't that incredible?

  279. The God

  280. who speaks to us

  281. in his word

  282. invites us

  283. and says,

  284. I'm listening

  285. to you.

  286. And the fact

  287. that God

  288. would make this

  289. known to us

  290. shows how much

  291. he loves us,

  292. that he wants us

  293. to talk to him.

  294. And for the Christian,

  295. we can speak with God

  296. anytime,

  297. anywhere,

  298. about anything.

  299. So God speaks,

  300. but God listens.

  301. We have access

  302. to him.

  303. not only access,

  304. look at the sympathy

  305. that we have

  306. from God.

  307. We have a God

  308. who actually

  309. understands us.

  310. He's not so distant

  311. and far away

  312. that he doesn't know

  313. what's going on.

  314. No,

  315. he's close.

  316. Look at verse 15.

  317. For we do not

  318. have a high priest

  319. who is unable

  320. to feel sympathy

  321. for our weaknesses.

  322. Now,

  323. to feel sympathy

  324. in this context

  325. does not mean,

  326. oh,

  327. I'm sure it's hard

  328. for you,

  329. but you know what,

  330. if you do better

  331. and, you know,

  332. if you work a little

  333. bit harder,

  334. then things will be

  335. good for you.

  336. No,

  337. something deeper

  338. than that,

  339. it's saying,

  340. I understand you,

  341. I get you,

  342. I've been

  343. where you've been

  344. and because

  345. I've been there,

  346. I can help you.

  347. That's what verse 15

  348. is saying.

  349. Look at verse 15

  350. with me.

  351. We do not have

  352. a high priest

  353. who is unable

  354. to feel sympathy,

  355. but we have one

  356. who has been

  357. tempted in every way

  358. just as we are,

  359. yet he didn't sin.

  360. Now,

  361. Jesus didn't suffer

  362. every temptation.

  363. For example,

  364. Jesus wasn't married,

  365. so he didn't struggle

  366. with the temptations

  367. that married folk

  368. might do.

  369. He died at the age

  370. of 33,

  371. yes,

  372. he rose again,

  373. but he didn't suffer

  374. the temptation

  375. that maybe somebody

  376. older did,

  377. but he suffered

  378. temptation

  379. in a way

  380. that we will never do

  381. because when

  382. we're tempted

  383. and the pressure

  384. comes on,

  385. we give in

  386. to temptation,

  387. we break,

  388. but Jesus

  389. didn't break.

  390. even as the temptation

  391. increased

  392. and the pressure

  393. mounted,

  394. Jesus did not sin.

  395. Therefore,

  396. because he didn't sin,

  397. he is qualified

  398. to help us.

  399. He knows what we need

  400. because he has lived

  401. as a human

  402. on this earth.

  403. He's experienced

  404. life in this broken world.

  405. Just look back with me

  406. to chapter 2,

  407. verse 18.

  408. It makes it very clear.

  409. Chapter 2,

  410. verse 18.

  411. Because Jesus himself

  412. suffered when he

  413. was tempted,

  414. he is able to help

  415. those who are

  416. being tempted.

  417. Isn't that encouraging

  418. for you and I?

  419. That when we face

  420. struggles like this,

  421. we have a God

  422. who isn't distant,

  423. but is close

  424. and understands

  425. and sympathises

  426. with us.

  427. He enters

  428. into our struggle.

  429. He feels for you.

  430. He draws alongside

  431. and says,

  432. I'm going to help you.

  433. So we have access.

  434. We have sympathy.

  435. Therefore,

  436. we can come

  437. and ask God.

  438. We can ask him.

  439. Verse 16.

  440. Let us then

  441. approach God's throne

  442. of grace

  443. with confidence

  444. so that we can

  445. receive mercy

  446. and find grace

  447. for our time of need.

  448. I don't know

  449. what you think

  450. of God,

  451. but he is not

  452. a tight-fisted

  453. Grinch.

  454. God is a loving,

  455. generous Father

  456. who loves

  457. to give.

  458. In fact,

  459. God is the one

  460. who knows

  461. what is good for us.

  462. So in our need,

  463. we can run to God

  464. and ask him

  465. for our help

  466. in our need.

  467. He gives us

  468. the supplies

  469. that is required

  470. for the Christian life.

  471. And in this context,

  472. he gives what we need

  473. in our temptations

  474. and trials.

  475. Mercy is what we need

  476. for our past failure

  477. and grace is what we need

  478. for the future challenges.

  479. And he gives it

  480. in bucket loads.

  481. It's overflowing.

  482. It's constant.

  483. But how much more

  484. is this true

  485. in every area

  486. of our life?

  487. What about

  488. in your times

  489. of suffering?

  490. Maybe you've got

  491. an illness.

  492. Or maybe it's

  493. in time of loss.

  494. Or maybe you're

  495. hurting this morning

  496. because of what

  497. a friend has said

  498. or done.

  499. Or maybe you're

  500. concerned for your

  501. family or your

  502. children.

  503. Well, we have

  504. an invitation here.

  505. Come to me.

  506. You have access

  507. to me.

  508. I understand you

  509. where you're at.

  510. Come to me

  511. and I will give you

  512. mercy and grace

  513. to help you

  514. now

  515. in your time

  516. of need.

  517. And when we think

  518. about it,

  519. as we go through

  520. the day,

  521. our needs increase.

  522. We have multiple

  523. needs.

  524. from the morning,

  525. from the minute

  526. we wake up

  527. to the moment

  528. we go to sleep.

  529. And all through

  530. the day,

  531. whatever need

  532. we have,

  533. God is sufficient.

  534. It's not just

  535. saying,

  536. here all,

  537. I have a little

  538. bit of mercy

  539. and a little

  540. bit of grace

  541. and you can

  542. choose when you

  543. have it,

  544. but you can

  545. only have it

  546. once.

  547. No.

  548. It's there for us.

  549. He is sufficient.

  550. The Apostle Paul

  551. reminds us in

  552. Romans 8,

  553. I'm going to

  554. quote here a

  555. verse.

  556. It says,

  557. God did not

  558. spare his own

  559. son,

  560. but gave him

  561. up for us

  562. all.

  563. How will he

  564. not also,

  565. along with him,

  566. graciously give

  567. us all things?

  568. If God gave

  569. you the greatest

  570. gift possible,

  571. the gift of his

  572. son,

  573. who died for you,

  574. and rose again

  575. to defeat death

  576. for you,

  577. if God gave

  578. the best gift

  579. ever,

  580. he says,

  581. how will he

  582. not also give

  583. you what you

  584. graciously need?

  585. He'll give you

  586. everything else

  587. you need.

  588. So we can

  589. come with

  590. confidence

  591. and ask.

  592. So the big

  593. message from

  594. this second

  595. idea

  596. is that

  597. through prayer

  598. we receive

  599. our deepest

  600. need.

  601. In this

  602. context,

  603. God is

  604. revealing our

  605. sin so that

  606. he can provide

  607. healing for

  608. our sin.

  609. Like the

  610. doctor exposing

  611. the problem so

  612. he can restore

  613. the person's

  614. health.

  615. Well,

  616. that is what

  617. God does.

  618. He reveals

  619. so that we

  620. can receive

  621. the healing.

  622. And how true

  623. is that in

  624. all of our

  625. Christian life.

  626. He sees

  627. what's going

  628. on and

  629. he will

  630. provide for

  631. us.

  632. Now let's

  633. be clear

  634. before we

  635. move on.

  636. God doesn't

  637. give what

  638. we want,

  639. but what

  640. we most

  641. need.

  642. He will

  643. never give

  644. anything that

  645. is harmful

  646. and he will

  647. never withhold

  648. what is best.

  649. Do you know

  650. that?

  651. He'll never

  652. give you

  653. anything that's

  654. harmful and

  655. he'll never

  656. withhold from

  657. you anything

  658. that is best.

  659. God made

  660. you.

  661. He knows

  662. you and he

  663. will give

  664. according to

  665. your need.

  666. So here's

  667. these two

  668. big ideas,

  669. how we

  670. express our

  671. dependence on

  672. God.

  673. Through the

  674. word of

  675. God, our

  676. deepest need

  677. is revealed

  678. and through

  679. prayer to

  680. God, our

  681. deepest needs

  682. are received.

  683. So, you've

  684. got your

  685. piece of

  686. paper, now

  687. you can look

  688. at it, or

  689. maybe you've

  690. already read

  691. it.

  692. And we

  693. want to

  694. think about

  695. how do we

  696. practice

  697. dependence on

  698. God?

  699. What's it

  700. actually going

  701. to look like

  702. for you and

  703. me to listen

  704. to God and

  705. to speak to

  706. God day by

  707. day?

  708. Well, before

  709. we get into

  710. the detail,

  711. Day Northland,

  712. a pastor and

  713. writer says

  714. that reading

  715. the Bible

  716. and prayer

  717. is like

  718. breathing.

  719. It's a really

  720. helpful analogy.

  721. Breathe in,

  722. breathe out.

  723. To breathe in

  724. is to live.

  725. Without breathing

  726. we die.

  727. Well, just as

  728. we physically

  729. need to breathe,

  730. so we

  731. spiritually need

  732. to breathe.

  733. breathe in

  734. God's word

  735. and we

  736. breathe out

  737. in prayer.

  738. Inhale,

  739. exhale.

  740. It's oxygen

  741. for the soul.

  742. So what will

  743. this spiritual

  744. breathing look

  745. like?

  746. What will

  747. speaking to

  748. God and

  749. listening to

  750. God look

  751. like?

  752. Well, I've

  753. got three

  754. things down

  755. there on

  756. your piece

  757. of paper.

  758. The first

  759. one says

  760. breathe

  761. regularly.

  762. Breathe

  763. regularly.

  764. We need

  765. regular times

  766. to read

  767. and pray.

  768. Plan times

  769. where we

  770. prioritize

  771. listening to

  772. God and

  773. speaking to

  774. God.

  775. We say,

  776. Johnny, look,

  777. I understand

  778. that, I know

  779. that, but I

  780. don't have

  781. time, I'm

  782. busy at work

  783. and then

  784. while I'm

  785. doing taxi

  786. for the kids

  787. and I drop

  788. one here and

  789. then I have

  790. to go and

  791. get the other

  792. one here and

  793. then I have

  794. to go back

  795. and I have

  796. to go to

  797. the shops

  798. and look,

  799. the way I

  800. look at it

  801. is if I

  802. can get

  803. here on a

  804. Sunday,

  805. that's good

  806. for me.

  807. That'll get

  808. me through

  809. the week.

  810. Well, if

  811. you're here

  812. this morning

  813. and you're

  814. wondering if

  815. you are,

  816. you are,

  817. you are here,

  818. that's good.

  819. Welcome.

  820. It's great to

  821. have everybody.

  822. Gathering

  823. together is

  824. vital, but

  825. if that's the

  826. only time we

  827. breathe,

  828. ease, we're

  829. going to

  830. struggle in

  831. our Christian

  832. life, aren't

  833. we?

  834. Look at the

  835. quote that's

  836. on your

  837. sheet by

  838. D.L.

  839. Moody, an

  840. American

  841. evangelist.

  842. He put it

  843. like this,

  844. a person

  845. can no more

  846. take in a

  847. supply of

  848. grace for

  849. the future

  850. than he

  851. can eat

  852. enough for

  853. the next

  854. six months

  855. or take

  856. sufficient air

  857. into his

  858. lungs at

  859. one time to

  860. sustain life

  861. for a week.

  862. We must

  863. draw upon

  864. God's

  865. boundless

  866. store of

  867. grace from

  868. day to

  869. day as

  870. we need

  871. it.

  872. I guarantee

  873. you don't

  874. just have

  875. one meal

  876. on a

  877. Monday that

  878. lasts you

  879. for the

  880. rest of

  881. the week,

  882. right?

  883. Unless you're

  884. on some

  885. weird, crazy,

  886. unhealthy

  887. dieting

  888. exercise.

  889. That'll kill

  890. you, so

  891. don't do

  892. it.

  893. Just as

  894. we eat

  895. daily and

  896. breathe

  897. regularly,

  898. so we

  899. need to

  900. read and

  901. pray

  902. regularly.

  903. It's not

  904. a duty to

  905. perform a

  906. kind of a

  907. tick list and

  908. oh God

  909. will be

  910. pleased with

  911. me.

  912. No, it's

  913. oxygen for

  914. your soul.

  915. It'll

  916. actually grow

  917. you and

  918. nourish you

  919. and it

  920. will sustain

  921. you and

  922. change you.

  923. So let's

  924. breathe

  925. regularly.

  926. breathe

  927. intentionally.

  928. The second

  929. idea is

  930. let's

  931. breathe

  932. intentionally

  933. because

  934. sometimes you

  935. can go,

  936. well, what

  937. am I going

  938. to read

  939. today?

  940. Close my

  941. eyes, flick

  942. through and

  943. oh, I'll

  944. read this.

  945. Well, no,

  946. let's have a

  947. bit of purpose

  948. about it.

  949. Choose a

  950. book, choose

  951. Hebrews,

  952. whichever one

  953. you like,

  954. and say,

  955. I'm going to

  956. read a section

  957. at a time.

  958. So let me

  959. show you a

  960. pattern how

  961. you can do

  962. this.

  963. This is

  964. something that

  965. I sometimes

  966. do, different

  967. ways of

  968. reading and

  969. helping us to

  970. get God's

  971. word into

  972. our life.

  973. So four

  974. things under

  975. breathing

  976. intentionally.

  977. First come

  978. independence.

  979. We can pray

  980. to God

  981. before we

  982. read, we

  983. can pray,

  984. Lord, open

  985. my eyes that

  986. I may see

  987. wonderful things

  988. in your

  989. law.

  990. Show me,

  991. reveal to

  992. me.

  993. Or a

  994. reminder that

  995. I cannot

  996. bear fruit

  997. apart from

  998. God, I

  999. can do

  1000. nothing.

  1001. You see, I'm

  1002. asking God

  1003. to reveal to

  1004. me my

  1005. deepest need.

  1006. So we

  1007. come to

  1008. the Bible

  1009. with an

  1010. attitude of

  1011. dependence.

  1012. I need

  1013. him.

  1014. And as

  1015. we do,

  1016. the next

  1017. step is

  1018. we engage

  1019. the mind.

  1020. We're well

  1021. able to

  1022. think, so

  1023. we engage

  1024. the mind.

  1025. we read

  1026. the text

  1027. just as

  1028. we've

  1029. read from

  1030. Hebrews

  1031. 12 or

  1032. from Hebrews

  1033. 4 today.

  1034. And we

  1035. can ask

  1036. simple

  1037. questions like,

  1038. what does

  1039. it say

  1040. about God?

  1041. Well, we've

  1042. learned that

  1043. God is a

  1044. speaking God.

  1045. His word is

  1046. active and

  1047. alive.

  1048. What does

  1049. it say

  1050. about myself

  1051. and areas

  1052. that I need

  1053. to change?

  1054. What's in

  1055. my heart?

  1056. What commands

  1057. am I to

  1058. follow or

  1059. promises to

  1060. believe?

  1061. Well, we've

  1062. got a

  1063. great promise

  1064. that when

  1065. we come

  1066. to God

  1067. and ask

  1068. him for

  1069. grace and

  1070. mercy,

  1071. he will

  1072. give it.

  1073. That's a

  1074. command I

  1075. can follow.

  1076. So that's

  1077. engaging the

  1078. mind.

  1079. And then we

  1080. want to bring

  1081. it to the

  1082. heart deep

  1083. down in

  1084. our life.

  1085. So from

  1086. the answers

  1087. we think,

  1088. how does

  1089. this apply?

  1090. So how

  1091. does this

  1092. truth about

  1093. God whose

  1094. word is

  1095. active and

  1096. alive,

  1097. life,

  1098. how does

  1099. that help

  1100. me to

  1101. thank him?

  1102. I can

  1103. thank God

  1104. for that.

  1105. What sin

  1106. do I need

  1107. to confess

  1108. and turn

  1109. from?

  1110. Not just

  1111. generally,

  1112. but being

  1113. more specific.

  1114. Lord, I

  1115. want you to

  1116. change me

  1117. because I

  1118. get angry

  1119. so often.

  1120. Or help

  1121. me because I

  1122. find that I'm

  1123. not speaking

  1124. the truth

  1125. as I

  1126. ought.

  1127. What do I

  1128. need God

  1129. to ask for

  1130. help,

  1131. for change?

  1132. So we

  1133. can do

  1134. that simple

  1135. exercise.

  1136. And then the

  1137. last one,

  1138. experiencing

  1139. the truth.

  1140. That's taking

  1141. it all

  1142. into prayer

  1143. and putting

  1144. it all

  1145. into practice.

  1146. So we

  1147. can adore

  1148. God, we

  1149. can praise

  1150. him and

  1151. say thank

  1152. you so

  1153. much for

  1154. your living

  1155. word and

  1156. the work

  1157. it does

  1158. in my

  1159. life.

  1160. We can

  1161. confess,

  1162. Father,

  1163. please forgive

  1164. me for

  1165. the times

  1166. that I

  1167. have watched

  1168. something

  1169. this week

  1170. that I

  1171. ought not

  1172. to have

  1173. watched.

  1174. The things

  1175. that I

  1176. have thought

  1177. that I

  1178. shouldn't

  1179. have

  1180. thought,

  1181. please forgive

  1182. me.

  1183. And then

  1184. when petition

  1185. we ask

  1186. of God,

  1187. Lord,

  1188. would you

  1189. give me

  1190. mercy?

  1191. And will

  1192. you give

  1193. me grace

  1194. to help

  1195. me live

  1196. as I

  1197. ought as a

  1198. Christian

  1199. this week?

  1200. speak.

  1201. So that's

  1202. just something

  1203. very simple.

  1204. Breathe

  1205. intentionally.

  1206. Have a

  1207. focus and

  1208. a pattern

  1209. for our

  1210. reading and

  1211. speaking to

  1212. God.

  1213. And then

  1214. the last

  1215. one,

  1216. breathe

  1217. together.

  1218. Sometimes

  1219. we can get

  1220. overwhelmed and

  1221. anxious,

  1222. can't we?

  1223. And we

  1224. can get

  1225. kind of

  1226. out of

  1227. breath and

  1228. we can get

  1229. challenged and

  1230. someone needs

  1231. to sit

  1232. alongside us

  1233. and help

  1234. us to

  1235. regulate our

  1236. breathing.

  1237. They might

  1238. even say,

  1239. breathe with

  1240. me,

  1241. calm down,

  1242. breathe in,

  1243. breathe out.

  1244. But we

  1245. need to do

  1246. that spiritually

  1247. because it's

  1248. hard sometimes

  1249. to read and

  1250. pray on our

  1251. own.

  1252. And we

  1253. need somebody

  1254. who will get

  1255. alongside and

  1256. say,

  1257. breathe with

  1258. me,

  1259. let's read

  1260. God's word

  1261. together,

  1262. let's take

  1263. it in,

  1264. let's reflect

  1265. on it,

  1266. now let's

  1267. pray it

  1268. back to

  1269. God.

  1270. Pray with

  1271. me.

  1272. We need

  1273. each other

  1274. and that's

  1275. why God

  1276. has put us

  1277. together in

  1278. a church

  1279. family,

  1280. so that we

  1281. can help

  1282. each other.

  1283. And if you

  1284. want somebody

  1285. to help

  1286. you,

  1287. well ask

  1288. someone today.

  1289. I would be

  1290. very happy,

  1291. I'd love to

  1292. meet with you

  1293. and read

  1294. the Bible.

  1295. So what is

  1296. a Christian?

  1297. Well a

  1298. Christian is

  1299. someone who

  1300. depends on

  1301. God.

  1302. Through the

  1303. word of

  1304. God our

  1305. deepest needs

  1306. are revealed

  1307. and through

  1308. prayer to

  1309. God our

  1310. deepest needs

  1311. are received.

  1312. Let's pray.

  1313. Amen.

  1314. Father, thank you

  1315. that we have

  1316. heard your

  1317. voice through

  1318. your word

  1319. written down

  1320. in scripture.

  1321. and thank you

  1322. that you have

  1323. heard us as

  1324. we have

  1325. prayed to

  1326. you.

  1327. Would you

  1328. please help

  1329. us to

  1330. live our

  1331. life dependent

  1332. on you?

  1333. That you

  1334. would reveal

  1335. to us what

  1336. is going on

  1337. in our life

  1338. that we may

  1339. come and ask

  1340. for the

  1341. things that

  1342. we need.

  1343. Would you

  1344. give us

  1345. mercy and

  1346. will you

  1347. give us

  1348. grace for

  1349. our needs

  1350. today?

  1351. Thank you

  1352. that you

  1353. listen and

  1354. thank you

  1355. that you

  1356. speak.

  1357. In Jesus

  1358. name we

  1359. pray.

  1360. Amen.

  1361. Well we're

  1362. going to sing

  1363. a song

  1364. together that

  1365. helps bring

  1366. some of

  1367. these thoughts

  1368. and themes

  1369. together.

  1370. speak oh

  1371. Lord as

  1372. we come

  1373. to you to

  1374. receive the

  1375. food of

  1376. your holy

  1377. word.

  1378. It's a

  1379. prayer.

  1380. A prayer

  1381. that we

  1382. would long

  1383. that God

  1384. speak into

  1385. our lives.

  1386. Let's stand

  1387. together if

  1388. we're able

  1389. to and

  1390. we'll

  1391. sing.

  1392. Amen.
