  1. Thank you, Rob.

  2. Luke's Gospel, Chapter 6.

  3. We're going to read from verses 27 to 36 this morning.

  4. This section that I'm reading from Luke starts back towards the beginning of Chapter 6.

  5. You've probably heard of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew's Gospel.

  6. This is the Sermon on the Plain.

  7. Some of the teachings are repeated, some are different.

  8. But Jesus is teaching a wide audience of people, some who are disciples, some are not.

  9. So we're going to pick it up in verse 27.

  10. But to you who are listening, that's us, I say, love your enemies.

  11. Do good to those who hate you.

  12. Bless those who curse you.

  13. Pray for those who ill-treat you.

  14. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also.

  15. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.

  16. Give to everyone who asks you.

  17. And if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.

  18. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

  19. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?

  20. Even sinners love those who love them.

  21. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you?

  22. Even sinners do that.

  23. And if you lend to those whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?

  24. Even sinners lend to sinners expecting to be repaid in full.

  25. But love your enemies.

  26. Do good to them.

  27. And lend to them without expecting to get anything back.

  28. Then your reward will be great.

  29. And you will be children of the Most High.

  30. Because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

  31. Be merciful.

  32. Be merciful.

  33. Just as your Father is merciful.

  34. Well, let's pray.

  35. Father God, be our teacher.

  36. And help us to listen.

  37. And may the words that I speak

  38. be words that you use

  39. for our benefit

  40. and for our good.

  41. Bless us, we pray.

  42. Amen.

  43. Well, in our series of this month,

  44. we've been asking the big question,

  45. what is a Christian?

  46. And today we're going to see that a Christian

  47. is someone

  48. who has a love

  49. for others.

  50. In other words,

  51. if you are a disciple of Jesus,

  52. you are known

  53. for your love.

  54. love for our brothers and sisters

  55. within the church family,

  56. but for all those we meet

  57. in our community

  58. and those who we work with.

  59. And as a way of understanding love,

  60. I just have a very simple definition

  61. to help us along this morning.

  62. love is an unconditional action

  63. to do good

  64. and be kind

  65. to those we consider

  66. undeserving

  67. and unlovely.

  68. An unconditional action

  69. to do good

  70. and be kind

  71. to those we consider

  72. undeserving

  73. and unlovely.

  74. You see, as Christians,

  75. we are not

  76. called to

  77. separate

  78. from those

  79. who we consider

  80. immoral

  81. or to avoid

  82. those who we don't agree with

  83. or to tolerate

  84. those we think

  85. difficult.

  86. Now, we're commanded,

  87. do you see it there

  88. in verse 27?

  89. To love

  90. your enemies.

  91. Do good

  92. to those

  93. who hate you.

  94. bless those

  95. who curse you.

  96. Pray for those

  97. who ill-treat you.

  98. We are to move

  99. towards those

  100. we consider

  101. undeserving

  102. and unlovely

  103. and do good

  104. to them

  105. and to be kind

  106. to them.

  107. Corrie Ten Boom,

  108. whom some of you

  109. may have heard of,

  110. was a remarkable

  111. young lady

  112. who helped her father

  113. hide

  114. and protect

  115. Jews

  116. in her own home

  117. during the Holocaust

  118. of World War II.

  119. Eventually,

  120. Corrie and her family

  121. were caught

  122. and all her family

  123. were taken off

  124. to one of the

  125. notorious

  126. concentration camps.

  127. Corrie survived

  128. and after the war,

  129. she began

  130. to speak

  131. in various churches

  132. about her experience.

  133. And in her book,

  134. which is called

  135. The Hiding Place,

  136. she recounts

  137. one particular

  138. encounter

  139. that she had

  140. at a church

  141. meeting.

  142. Let me read

  143. to you

  144. from that

  145. encounter.

  146. A man

  147. approached

  148. to shake

  149. her hand,

  150. marvelling

  151. at the forgiveness

  152. of Jesus

  153. she had just

  154. described.

  155. She recognised

  156. him.

  157. He was her

  158. former

  159. jailer.

  160. His hand

  161. was thrust

  162. out to shake

  163. mine,

  164. and I,

  165. who had preached

  166. so often to the

  167. people

  168. the need

  169. to forgive,

  170. kept my hand

  171. by my side.

  172. Even as angry,

  173. vengeful thoughts

  174. boiled through me,

  175. I saw the sin

  176. of them.

  177. Jesus Christ

  178. had died

  179. for this man.

  180. Was I going

  181. to ask

  182. for more?

  183. I breathed

  184. a silent

  185. prayer.

  186. Jesus,

  187. I cannot

  188. forgive him.

  189. Give

  190. your

  191. forgiveness.

  192. And she

  193. took the

  194. man's hand.

  195. Then this

  196. healing warmth

  197. seemed to flood

  198. my whole being,

  199. bringing tears

  200. to my eyes.

  201. I forgive

  202. you,

  203. brother,

  204. I cried,

  205. with all

  206. my heart.

  207. For a long

  208. moment we

  209. grasped each

  210. other's hands,

  211. the former

  212. guard,

  213. and me,

  214. the former

  215. prisoner.

  216. I had never

  217. known God's

  218. love so

  219. intensely

  220. as I did

  221. then.

  222. Do you see,

  223. in that one

  224. encounter,

  225. Corrie

  226. loved her

  227. enemies,

  228. did good

  229. to those

  230. who hated

  231. her,

  232. blessed

  233. those who

  234. had cursed

  235. her,

  236. and prayed

  237. for those

  238. who ill-treated

  239. her.

  240. That's the

  241. kind of love

  242. we're thinking

  243. about today.

  244. And to help

  245. us see what

  246. this kind of

  247. love looks

  248. like for us,

  249. we're going to

  250. look at three

  251. things from the

  252. text we've read.

  253. love as

  254. evidence,

  255. love in

  256. action,

  257. and love

  258. from God.

  259. So first,

  260. love as

  261. evidence.

  262. Love is

  263. not the

  264. key into

  265. God's

  266. kingdom,

  267. rather it's

  268. the mark of

  269. those who

  270. are in

  271. the kingdom.

  272. Or to put it

  273. another way,

  274. love doesn't

  275. make us

  276. Christians,

  277. rather love

  278. is the

  279. evidence

  280. that we

  281. are a

  282. Christian.

  283. So look at

  284. verse 35.

  285. Love your

  286. enemies,

  287. do good to

  288. them,

  289. lend to them

  290. without expecting

  291. to get anything

  292. back,

  293. then your

  294. reward will

  295. be great,

  296. and you

  297. will be

  298. called

  299. children of

  300. the Most

  301. High,

  302. because he

  303. is kind to

  304. the ungrateful

  305. and the wicked.

  306. Love doesn't

  307. make us

  308. children of

  309. God,

  310. rather when

  311. we love

  312. like God,

  313. we are

  314. demonstrating

  315. our identity

  316. that I'm

  317. a child

  318. of God.

  319. Jesus goes

  320. on later

  321. to give an

  322. illustration,

  323. jump down

  324. to verse

  325. 43.

  326. No good

  327. tree bears

  328. bad fruit,

  329. nor does a

  330. bad tree

  331. bear good

  332. fruit.

  333. Each tree

  334. is recognised

  335. by its own

  336. fruit.

  337. People don't

  338. pick figs

  339. from thorn

  340. bushes or

  341. grapes from

  342. briars.

  343. In other

  344. words,

  345. we know a

  346. tree is a

  347. pear tree

  348. because it

  349. produces

  350. pears.

  351. We know

  352. it's an

  353. orange tree

  354. because it

  355. produces

  356. oranges.

  357. Well,

  358. in the same

  359. way you

  360. know someone

  361. is a

  362. Christian

  363. because they

  364. produce

  365. love for

  366. others.

  367. The fruit

  368. of a

  369. Christian

  370. is love.

  371. we produce

  372. delicious,

  373. tasty,

  374. refreshing

  375. acts of

  376. goodness

  377. and

  378. kindness.

  379. Verse 45.

  380. A good

  381. man brings

  382. good things

  383. out of the

  384. good stored

  385. up in his

  386. heart,

  387. and an

  388. evil man

  389. brings evil

  390. things out

  391. of the evil

  392. stored up

  393. in his

  394. heart.

  395. For the

  396. mouth speaks

  397. what the

  398. heart is

  399. full of.

  400. You see,

  401. whatever is

  402. in our

  403. hearts

  404. is going

  405. to overflow

  406. from out

  407. of our

  408. hearts.

  409. And a

  410. Christian,

  411. we're told

  412. here,

  413. is one

  414. who is

  415. filled

  416. with love.

  417. So,

  418. whenever we're

  419. jostled by

  420. the actions

  421. of others,

  422. whenever we're

  423. knocked by

  424. the hurts

  425. of others,

  426. love is

  427. going to

  428. spill out

  429. in all

  430. kinds of

  431. kind words

  432. and good

  433. deeds.

  434. Love is

  435. the supreme

  436. mark of a

  437. Christian.

  438. It reveals

  439. our identity

  440. as children

  441. of God.

  442. So,

  443. first,

  444. love is

  445. evidence

  446. that we

  447. are children

  448. of the

  449. Most High.

  450. Second,

  451. we're going

  452. to look at

  453. love in

  454. action.

  455. The command

  456. to love

  457. is radical,

  458. isn't it,

  459. as we've

  460. been reading.

  461. It's upside

  462. down and

  463. back to

  464. front of

  465. how we

  466. think it

  467. should be.

  468. You see,

  469. it's not a

  470. call to

  471. love the

  472. ones who

  473. we see

  474. are decent.

  475. You're

  476. good,

  477. all-round

  478. friendly

  479. neighbour

  480. who's

  481. always

  482. up for

  483. a chat

  484. and

  485. ready

  486. to

  487. help.

  488. Anyone

  489. can and

  490. does

  491. love that

  492. kind of

  493. person,

  494. but that's

  495. not the

  496. kind of

  497. love Jesus

  498. is talking

  499. about.

  500. Look at

  501. verse 32.

  502. If you

  503. love those

  504. who love

  505. you,

  506. what credit

  507. is that

  508. to you?

  509. even

  510. sinners

  511. love those

  512. who love

  513. them.

  514. And if

  515. you do

  516. good to

  517. those who

  518. are good

  519. to you,

  520. what credit

  521. is that

  522. to you?

  523. Even

  524. sinners

  525. do that.

  526. And if

  527. you lend

  528. to those

  529. from whom

  530. you expect

  531. repayment,

  532. what credit

  533. is that

  534. to you?

  535. Even

  536. sinners

  537. lend

  538. to sinners

  539. expecting

  540. to be

  541. repaid

  542. in full.

  543. In other

  544. words,

  545. he's saying

  546. you don't

  547. have to

  548. be a

  549. Christian

  550. to live

  551. like that.

  552. You don't

  553. need to

  554. be a

  555. child of

  556. God to

  557. love

  558. nice,

  559. decent

  560. people.

  561. You see,

  562. I think

  563. I'm rather

  564. good when

  565. I invite

  566. Mr.

  567. Nice and

  568. his family

  569. to a

  570. neighbourhood

  571. barbecue

  572. because I

  573. know that

  574. when they

  575. come they're

  576. going to

  577. bring a

  578. bottle of

  579. wine and

  580. a dessert

  581. without

  582. even asking.

  583. And I,

  584. you know,

  585. maybe for

  586. you when

  587. you're at

  588. work,

  589. it's,

  590. well,

  591. somebody

  592. asks you

  593. for a

  594. lift.

  595. Well,

  596. it's no

  597. problem

  598. giving them

  599. a lift

  600. because you

  601. know they're

  602. going to

  603. give you

  604. a tenner

  605. for the

  606. petrol.

  607. It's

  608. easy to

  609. love those

  610. who love

  611. back and

  612. do good

  613. to you.

  614. No,

  615. says Jesus,

  616. there's nothing

  617. special about

  618. that.

  619. Don't go

  620. patting yourself

  621. on the

  622. back.

  623. Look what

  624. it says at

  625. the end of

  626. verse 32.

  627. Even sinners

  628. love those

  629. who love

  630. them.

  631. Or the

  632. end of

  633. verse 34.

  634. Even

  635. sinners

  636. lend to

  637. sinners.

  638. Those that

  639. hurt you

  640. and

  641. irritate

  642. you

  643. and wrong

  644. you

  645. and judge

  646. you,

  647. they're the

  648. ones we're

  649. to love.

  650. Verse 27.

  651. love

  652. your

  653. enemies.

  654. Verse 35.

  655. But love

  656. your

  657. enemies.

  658. Maybe it

  659. would be

  660. helpful now,

  661. and please

  662. don't shout

  663. out the

  664. name,

  665. but to be

  666. thinking of

  667. the person

  668. who most

  669. irritates

  670. you,

  671. who most

  672. frustrates

  673. you,

  674. who do you

  675. not want to

  676. see tomorrow

  677. morning when

  678. you go to

  679. work?

  680. Who do you

  681. not want to

  682. bump into

  683. when you're

  684. out shopping?

  685. Love them.

  686. So what does

  687. this kind of

  688. love look

  689. like?

  690. Well,

  691. two things.

  692. First,

  693. don't

  694. retaliate.

  695. Let's pick it up

  696. again in

  697. verse 29.

  698. 29.

  699. If someone

  700. slaps you

  701. on one

  702. cheek,

  703. turn to

  704. them the

  705. other also.

  706. If someone

  707. takes your

  708. coat,

  709. do not

  710. withhold your

  711. shirt from

  712. them.

  713. Give to

  714. everyone who

  715. asks you,

  716. and if

  717. anyone takes

  718. what belongs

  719. to you,

  720. don't demand

  721. it back.

  722. Now,

  723. we have to

  724. be very

  725. careful how

  726. we interpret

  727. this.

  728. Jesus is

  729. not saying

  730. to a

  731. wife who

  732. is physically

  733. being abused

  734. by her

  735. husband,

  736. oh,

  737. let him

  738. hit you

  739. again.

  740. Jesus is

  741. not saying

  742. to a

  743. man who's

  744. been diddled

  745. by his

  746. accountant to

  747. give him

  748. more access

  749. to his

  750. funds.

  751. No,

  752. that would

  753. fly in the

  754. face of

  755. the command

  756. to seek

  757. justice

  758. and to

  759. be wise.

  760. So what

  761. does Jesus

  762. mean by

  763. these words?

  764. Well,

  765. when we

  766. take what

  767. we've just

  768. read in

  769. verses 29

  770. to 30,

  771. if we

  772. take these

  773. examples

  774. together,

  775. it's really

  776. commanding us,

  777. don't retaliate.

  778. Don't take

  779. revenge on

  780. those who

  781. cause you

  782. harm.

  783. Instead,

  784. seek ways

  785. to be good

  786. and kind

  787. to them.

  788. Put yourself

  789. into,

  790. yes,

  791. a vulnerable

  792. position where

  793. you may be

  794. hurt again

  795. by their

  796. words or

  797. their

  798. actions.

  799. You see,

  800. we tend to

  801. operate under

  802. the principle

  803. of do to

  804. others what

  805. they do to

  806. you.

  807. So if you're

  808. given a box

  809. in the jaw,

  810. well,

  811. give them a

  812. good thump

  813. back,

  814. maybe two.

  815. Or if

  816. someone won't

  817. give back

  818. what you

  819. lent them,

  820. go to their

  821. house and

  822. take it back

  823. and take

  824. something else

  825. while you're

  826. there.

  827. But that's

  828. not what

  829. Jesus is

  830. saying,

  831. verse 31.

  832. Do to

  833. others as

  834. you would

  835. have them

  836. do to

  837. you.

  838. We are to

  839. intentionally

  840. seek ways

  841. of blessing

  842. those who

  843. cause us

  844. harm.

  845. So loving

  846. others means

  847. don't

  848. retaliate.

  849. Second,

  850. be generous.

  851. Look at

  852. verse 35.

  853. Love your

  854. enemies.

  855. Do good

  856. to them

  857. and lend

  858. to them

  859. without

  860. expecting to

  861. get anything

  862. back in

  863. return.

  864. You see,

  865. non-retaliation,

  866. that's right,

  867. don't retaliate.

  868. But it

  869. doesn't stop

  870. there.

  871. It calls us

  872. to go

  873. further.

  874. It says,

  875. be generous.

  876. You see,

  877. when you

  878. give or

  879. when you

  880. lend

  881. something,

  882. don't look

  883. at it as

  884. something that

  885. you're going

  886. to get

  887. back or

  888. you hope

  889. that in

  890. some way

  891. you'll be

  892. getting some

  893. return on

  894. it.

  895. No,

  896. treat it

  897. as a

  898. gift.

  899. You see,

  900. whatever we

  901. have in

  902. our possession,

  903. all that

  904. we enjoy,

  905. well,

  906. none of

  907. these things

  908. are ultimately

  909. ours.

  910. They're all

  911. gifts from

  912. God.

  913. we have

  914. no right

  915. to hold

  916. on to

  917. anything.

  918. What we

  919. have,

  920. God has

  921. given.

  922. So we

  923. are to

  924. act in

  925. generosity

  926. to those

  927. who cause

  928. us physical

  929. or practical

  930. or financial

  931. harm.

  932. Loving

  933. others means

  934. we are to

  935. be

  936. generous.

  937. Alistair

  938. Begg,

  939. who is a

  940. teacher,

  941. pastor,

  942. and author,

  943. put it

  944. like this.

  945. You can

  946. follow on

  947. the screen.

  948. It's a

  949. refusal to

  950. treat others

  951. according to

  952. what they

  953. deserve.

  954. Even those

  955. who hate,

  956. exclude,

  957. revile,

  958. and defame

  959. you are not

  960. to be treated

  961. as enemies.

  962. We are to

  963. live a life

  964. marked by a

  965. refusal to

  966. treat others

  967. as though

  968. they were

  969. your enemies.

  970. Love means

  971. don't

  972. retaliate,

  973. but be

  974. generous.

  975. Now,

  976. I know

  977. this is hard

  978. and it's a

  979. big thing

  980. that's being

  981. said,

  982. love your

  983. enemies.

  984. And before

  985. we move

  986. on,

  987. let's just

  988. think for a

  989. moment about

  990. what about

  991. the wrong

  992. that has

  993. been done

  994. to us.

  995. You're

  996. saying love

  997. your enemies,

  998. but what

  999. about the

  1000. harm they've

  1001. caused us?

  1002. What are we

  1003. to do with

  1004. that?

  1005. Are we to

  1006. pretend that

  1007. it doesn't

  1008. matter?

  1009. If we've

  1010. been hurt

  1011. or something's

  1012. been stolen,

  1013. are we just

  1014. to sweep it

  1015. under the

  1016. carpet and

  1017. take a deep

  1018. breath and

  1019. just push on

  1020. and hope

  1021. for the

  1022. best?

  1023. No,

  1024. it's not

  1025. saying anywhere

  1026. here,

  1027. let's overlook

  1028. people's

  1029. sin or

  1030. let's just

  1031. ignore everybody's

  1032. flaws and

  1033. failures.

  1034. No,

  1035. we should

  1036. never treat

  1037. sin lightly,

  1038. not just

  1039. because it's

  1040. had an effect

  1041. or it's

  1042. hurt us,

  1043. but because

  1044. ultimately it

  1045. offends

  1046. God.

  1047. We should

  1048. and we

  1049. ought to

  1050. always seek

  1051. what is

  1052. right and

  1053. just and

  1054. fair.

  1055. However,

  1056. when there

  1057. is no

  1058. recognition

  1059. of wrong

  1060. doing or

  1061. where there

  1062. is no

  1063. repentance

  1064. of sin,

  1065. the text

  1066. is calling

  1067. us not

  1068. to hold

  1069. it over

  1070. or against.

  1071. Instead,

  1072. Jesus calls

  1073. us to a

  1074. high calling.

  1075. Don't

  1076. retaliate,

  1077. but be

  1078. generous.

  1079. So

  1080. second,

  1081. love

  1082. in action.

  1083. love

  1084. love

  1085. from God.

  1086. So off

  1087. we go

  1088. ready to

  1089. love our

  1090. enemies.

  1091. Love in

  1092. action,

  1093. that's what

  1094. we're to

  1095. do.

  1096. Surely it

  1097. can't be

  1098. that hard.

  1099. Loving is

  1100. pretty easy,

  1101. isn't it?

  1102. Well,

  1103. maybe your

  1104. day goes

  1105. like this.

  1106. You see

  1107. someone in

  1108. the shop

  1109. who has

  1110. ill-treated

  1111. you,

  1112. and,

  1113. well,

  1114. you just

  1115. turn in

  1116. the opposite

  1117. direction and

  1118. get away from

  1119. them as fast

  1120. as possible.

  1121. Or someone

  1122. pulls out in

  1123. front of you

  1124. when you're

  1125. driving home

  1126. and you start

  1127. shouting obscenities

  1128. out the window.

  1129. Or your

  1130. boss backtracks

  1131. on his promise

  1132. and you give her

  1133. the silent

  1134. treatment.

  1135. You see,

  1136. we don't have

  1137. to go very

  1138. far into

  1139. our day,

  1140. do we,

  1141. when we

  1142. realise that,

  1143. well,

  1144. loving our

  1145. enemies

  1146. seems quite

  1147. impossible.

  1148. In fact,

  1149. as we're

  1150. listening this

  1151. morning,

  1152. we may be

  1153. wondering,

  1154. well,

  1155. am I a

  1156. Christian at

  1157. all?

  1158. Because love

  1159. is not how I

  1160. respond to

  1161. those who

  1162. hurt me.

  1163. I don't know

  1164. about you,

  1165. but I find

  1166. it hard to

  1167. love my

  1168. enemy.

  1169. I don't

  1170. respond always

  1171. in generosity.

  1172. I want to

  1173. retaliate.

  1174. Am I a

  1175. Christian?

  1176. So how do

  1177. we love?

  1178. What are we

  1179. to do with

  1180. it?

  1181. Well,

  1182. three practical

  1183. steps to

  1184. help us

  1185. all.

  1186. Here's the

  1187. first one.

  1188. Know who

  1189. you are.

  1190. Jesus'

  1191. message is

  1192. clear right

  1193. from the

  1194. start.

  1195. Verse 27,

  1196. love your

  1197. enemies.

  1198. Now,

  1199. I don't

  1200. know if you

  1201. know this,

  1202. but if

  1203. you're a

  1204. Christian here

  1205. today,

  1206. before you

  1207. became a

  1208. Christian,

  1209. that's how

  1210. we're

  1211. described.

  1212. That's

  1213. right.

  1214. An

  1215. enemy.

  1216. An

  1217. enemy of

  1218. God.

  1219. I'm not

  1220. sure if I

  1221. have the,

  1222. know I

  1223. don't

  1224. have the

  1225. quotes.

  1226. Let me

  1227. just quote

  1228. you two

  1229. verses from

  1230. scripture that

  1231. tell us this.

  1232. Colossians 1

    Colossians 1:21

  1233. verse 21,

  1234. once you

  1235. were alienated

  1236. from God

  1237. and were

  1238. enemies in

  1239. your minds

  1240. because of

  1241. your evil

  1242. behavior.

  1243. Or Romans

    Romans 5:10

  1244. 5 verse 10,

  1245. while we

  1246. were God's

  1247. enemies,

  1248. we were

  1249. reconciled to

  1250. him through

  1251. the death of

  1252. his son.

  1253. You see,

  1254. let's get to

  1255. grips with

  1256. who we

  1257. are.

  1258. We weren't

  1259. Mr.

  1260. Decent or

  1261. Miss Nice.

  1262. We were

  1263. unlovely.

  1264. Remember what

  1265. we read in

  1266. Deuteronomy at

  1267. the beginning?

  1268. Why does

  1269. God love us?

  1270. God loves us

  1271. because what?

  1272. Because he

  1273. loves you.

  1274. So,

  1275. Johnny,

  1276. and I speak

  1277. this to

  1278. myself,

  1279. to all of

  1280. us,

  1281. never forget

  1282. who you

  1283. once were

  1284. when you

  1285. turn your

  1286. back on

  1287. your enemy.

  1288. Know who

  1289. you are.

  1290. Second,

  1291. let us

  1292. know what

  1293. God has

  1294. done

  1295. because God

  1296. loved his

  1297. enemies.

  1298. Look at

  1299. verse 35

  1300. with me.

  1301. the last

  1302. part of

  1303. verse 35.

  1304. Then your

  1305. reward will

  1306. be great

  1307. and you

  1308. will be

  1309. children of

  1310. the Most

  1311. High

  1312. because he

  1313. is kind

  1314. to the

  1315. ungrateful

  1316. and wicked.

  1317. That's

  1318. God our

  1319. Father.

  1320. He is

  1321. kind

  1322. to the

  1323. ungrateful,

  1324. kind

  1325. to the

  1326. wicked.

  1327. And we

  1328. see this

  1329. kindness

  1330. in all

  1331. its fullness

  1332. at the

  1333. cross.

  1334. Let's

  1335. jump

  1336. forward to

  1337. Luke

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  1338. chapter

  1339. 23.

  1340. Luke

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  1341. chapter

  1342. 23.

  1343. Verse

  1344. 18.

  1345. This is

  1346. leading up

  1347. to the

  1348. crucifixion

  1349. of Jesus

  1350. and the

  1351. crowd are

  1352. roaring and

  1353. shouting and

  1354. vying for

  1355. the death

  1356. of Jesus

  1357. and in

  1358. place of

  1359. Jesus they

  1360. want to

  1361. release

  1362. Barabbas.

  1363. And this

  1364. account we

  1365. see Jesus

  1366. dying in

  1367. the place

  1368. not just

  1369. of Barabbas

  1370. but of

  1371. all who

  1372. turn against

  1373. him.

  1374. Let's

  1375. pick it up

  1376. in verse

  1377. 18.

  1378. But the

  1379. whole crowd

  1380. shouted,

  1381. away with

  1382. this man.

  1383. release

  1384. Barabbas

  1385. to us.

  1386. Barabbas

  1387. had been

  1388. thrown into

  1389. prison for

  1390. an insurrection

  1391. in the

  1392. city and

  1393. for murder.

  1394. Wanting to

  1395. release Jesus

  1396. Pilate appealed

  1397. to them

  1398. again.

  1399. But they

  1400. kept shouting,

  1401. crucify him,

  1402. crucify him.

  1403. For the

  1404. third time

  1405. he spoke

  1406. to them,

  1407. why?

  1408. What crime

  1409. has this

  1410. man committed?

  1411. I have

  1412. found in

  1413. him no

  1414. grounds for

  1415. the death

  1416. penalty.

  1417. Therefore I

  1418. will have

  1419. him punished

  1420. and then

  1421. release him.

  1422. But with

  1423. loud shouts

  1424. they insistently

  1425. demanded that

  1426. he be

  1427. crucified

  1428. and their

  1429. shouts

  1430. prevailed.

  1431. So

  1432. Pilate

  1433. decided to

  1434. grant their

  1435. demand.

  1436. He released

  1437. the man who

  1438. had been

  1439. thrown into

  1440. prison for

  1441. insurrection

  1442. and murder

  1443. the one

  1444. they asked

  1445. for

  1446. and surrendered

  1447. Jesus

  1448. to their

  1449. will.

  1450. Verse 33

  1451. When they

  1452. came to the

  1453. place called

  1454. the skull

  1455. they crucified

  1456. Jesus there

  1457. along with

  1458. the criminals

  1459. one on his

  1460. right

  1461. the other

  1462. on his

  1463. left.

  1464. Jesus said

  1465. Father

  1466. forgive them

  1467. for they do

  1468. not know

  1469. what they

  1470. are doing.

  1471. Jesus

  1472. loved his

  1473. enemies.

  1474. He did

  1475. good to

  1476. those who

  1477. hated him.

  1478. He blessed

  1479. those who

  1480. cursed him.

  1481. He prayed

  1482. for those

  1483. who ill

  1484. treated him.

  1485. He came

  1486. and died

  1487. in the

  1488. place of

  1489. sinners

  1490. so that

  1491. they could

  1492. be forgiven

  1493. so that

  1494. we can

  1495. be forgiven

  1496. for the

  1497. many times

  1498. we do

  1499. not love

  1500. as we

  1501. ought to

  1502. love.

  1503. Let's go

  1504. back to

  1505. chapter 6.

  1506. So

  1507. first know

  1508. who you

  1509. are.

  1510. Know

  1511. what God

  1512. has done

  1513. that he

  1514. dies

  1515. for us.

  1516. And

  1517. third

  1518. know

  1519. how

  1520. we

  1521. can

  1522. love.

  1523. You

  1524. see

  1525. just as

  1526. God

  1527. has been

  1528. kind

  1529. to us

  1530. just

  1531. as

  1532. God

  1533. has

  1534. loved

  1535. us

  1536. verse

  1537. 36

  1538. be

  1539. merciful

  1540. just

  1541. as your

  1542. father

  1543. is

  1544. merciful.

  1545. Don't

  1546. retaliate

  1547. be

  1548. generous

  1549. but how

  1550. how do

  1551. we do

  1552. it?

  1553. Well at

  1554. the beginning

  1555. of this

  1556. morning we

  1557. read the

  1558. account of

  1559. Corrie ten

  1560. boom.

  1561. Remember

  1562. what she

  1563. said?

  1564. Listen to

  1565. her words

  1566. carefully.

  1567. Remember

  1568. she's facing

  1569. her former

  1570. guard.

  1571. even as

  1572. angry

  1573. vengeful

  1574. thoughts

  1575. boiled

  1576. through

  1577. me

  1578. I

  1579. saw

  1580. the

  1581. sin

  1582. of

  1583. them.

  1584. Jesus

  1585. Christ

  1586. had died

  1587. for this

  1588. man.

  1589. Was I

  1590. going to

  1591. ask for

  1592. more?

  1593. You see

  1594. Corrie didn't

  1595. just see the

  1596. sin of

  1597. her former

  1598. prison

  1599. guard.

  1600. She saw

  1601. her own

  1602. sin of

  1603. withholding

  1604. forgiveness

  1605. and she

  1606. saw that

  1607. Jesus died

  1608. for her

  1609. as much

  1610. as for

  1611. him.

  1612. She

  1613. continues

  1614. I

  1615. breathed a

  1616. silent

  1617. prayer.

  1618. Jesus I

  1619. cannot

  1620. forgive him.

  1621. Give

  1622. your

  1623. forgiveness

  1624. and shook

  1625. the man's

  1626. hands.

  1627. You see

  1628. in that

  1629. moment

  1630. and in

  1631. that time

  1632. there was

  1633. a natural

  1634. struggle

  1635. and tension

  1636. and battle

  1637. within

  1638. to love

  1639. her

  1640. enemy.

  1641. And what

  1642. did she

  1643. do but

  1644. cry out

  1645. to God

  1646. and ask

  1647. for help

  1648. by saying

  1649. I can't

  1650. but you

  1651. can give

  1652. your

  1653. forgiveness.

  1654. But as

  1655. she did

  1656. that

  1657. she

  1658. recalls

  1659. then this

  1660. healing

  1661. warmth

  1662. seemed to

  1663. flood my

  1664. whole being

  1665. I cried

  1666. out I

  1667. forgive you

  1668. my brother

  1669. with all

  1670. my heart.

  1671. What

  1672. caused a

  1673. woman so

  1674. terribly

  1675. ill-treated

  1676. who had

  1677. only done

  1678. something

  1679. right and

  1680. good who

  1681. was harmed

  1682. physically and

  1683. psychologically

  1684. what caused

  1685. a woman to

  1686. reach out

  1687. and love

  1688. and show

  1689. forgiveness.

  1690. What caused

  1691. her to show

  1692. such kindness.

  1693. Well in

  1694. Corrie's own

  1695. words she

  1696. says I

  1697. had never

  1698. known God's

  1699. love so

  1700. intensely

  1701. as I

  1702. did then.

  1703. You see

  1704. it was

  1705. remembering

  1706. and recalling

  1707. and applying

  1708. afresh

  1709. the experience

  1710. of God's

  1711. love for

  1712. her

  1713. and God's

  1714. love

  1715. melted her

  1716. heart.

  1717. She came

  1718. to see

  1719. again how

  1720. much God

  1721. loved her

  1722. and he

  1723. enabled her

  1724. to reach

  1725. out

  1726. and love.

  1727. You see

  1728. that's the

  1729. only way

  1730. we can

  1731. ever love

  1732. is when

  1733. we receive

  1734. love from

  1735. God.

  1736. When we

  1737. know who

  1738. we are

  1739. and when

  1740. we dwell

  1741. afresh in

  1742. all that

  1743. God has

  1744. done for

  1745. us and

  1746. how he

  1747. loves us

  1748. consistently

  1749. and continually

  1750. never giving

  1751. up.

  1752. And as we

  1753. reflect on

  1754. his love

  1755. so we

  1756. can love

  1757. a world

  1758. and a

  1759. community

  1760. in which

  1761. we live.

  1762. let's pray

  1763. together.

  1764. Father, we

  1765. admit that

  1766. we

  1767. we all

  1768. struggle.

  1769. I think I

  1770. can say

  1771. that.

  1772. We all

  1773. struggle

  1774. with this

  1775. command

  1776. to love.

  1777. We

  1778. battle.

  1779. We feel

  1780. the tension.

  1781. We want

  1782. to retaliate.

  1783. We don't

  1784. want to be

  1785. kind.

  1786. Father, melt

  1787. our hearts

  1788. afresh.

  1789. Give us

  1790. an experience

  1791. afresh of

  1792. your love

  1793. to us,

  1794. of your

  1795. mercy and

  1796. your grace.

  1797. and your

  1798. kindness

  1799. and teach

  1800. us afresh

  1801. that we

  1802. might love

  1803. all who

  1804. we come

  1805. in contact

  1806. with.

  1807. And may

  1808. their hearts

  1809. be melted

  1810. and changed

  1811. and transformed

  1812. that they

  1813. too may

  1814. run to

  1815. the Savior

  1816. and experience

  1817. a love

  1818. that never

  1819. gives up.

  1820. Father,

  1821. thank you

  1822. that you

  1823. love us

  1824. today.

  1825. In all

  1826. our mess

  1827. and all

  1828. our failure,

  1829. thank you

  1830. that you

  1831. treasure us

  1832. as your

  1833. children.

  1834. Not even

  1835. our sin

  1836. will ever

  1837. separate us

  1838. from the love

  1839. that you

  1840. have for us.

  1841. how amazing

  1842. is that?

  1843. Amen.

  1844. Well, we're

  1845. going to do

  1846. exactly what

  1847. we've been

  1848. thinking about

  1849. to stand

  1850. and be

  1851. amazed

  1852. at the

  1853. amazing love

  1854. of God.

  1855. Wonder

  1856. how he

  1857. could love

  1858. us.

  1859. And he

  1860. does.

  1861. If you're

  1862. able to,

  1863. let's

  1864. stand

  1865. together

  1866. as we

  1867. sing.

  1868. Amen.
