  1. And as they are going out, I'm going to invite Kevin to come and get himself ready, and I'm going to hand over to him then. Thank you, Kevin.

  2. Well, good morning again. It's good to be with you all, and I bring you greetings from Middleton Baptist Church, another Cork Kerry Project church, and it's wonderful to be here with you.

  3. When I was in the U.S., I described the Cork Kerry Project to people. I was saying, it's like when you go to another Baptist church, it's like visiting your cousin's house.

  4. It's like, it's not your own home, but it's very familiar, and that's a precious thing, and I give thanks to God for that.

  5. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 6. Matthew chapter 6, the Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew 6 chapter mention Matthew 6 chapter mention

  6. We're going to be looking at verses 24 to 34 in particular this morning.

  7. It should be verse 25 to 34. Matthew chapter 6, 25 through to verse 34.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  8. These are the words of Jesus Christ.

  9. He says,

  10. Therefore, I say to you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, what you will drink, or about your body, what you will put on.

  11. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

  12. Look at the birds of the air.

  13. They neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

  14. Are you not of more value than they?

  15. Which of you, by being anxious, can add a single hour to his span of life?

  16. And why are you anxious about clothing?

  17. Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.

  18. They neither toil nor spin.

  19. Yet I tell you, even Solomon, in all his glory, was not arrayed like one of these.

  20. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

  21. how much more will he not more clothe you, O you, of little faith?

  22. Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, what shall we eat, what shall we drink, what shall we wear?

  23. For the Gentiles seek after all these things.

  24. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

  25. Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,

  26. and all of these things will be added to you.

  27. Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow.

  28. Tomorrow will be anxious for itself.

  29. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

  30. Father, as we consider these words of your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  31. we pray that we would have ears to hear and eyes to see the light of your truth.

  32. We ask for your help in Jesus' name. Amen.

  33. Worry is a powerful thing.

  34. Something we've all experienced at one point or another.

  35. Some problem or crisis or challenge comes crashing into your life,

  36. and it's something that you cannot just fix.

  37. And so you start to worry.

  38. What's going to happen next?

  39. What will I do if this happens?

  40. How will I cope if that happens?

  41. Is this ever going to get better?

  42. Worry is a powerful thing.

  43. You become so focused on the problem at hand

  44. that you develop a sort of tunnel vision

  45. where all you can think about from the moment you wake up

  46. to the moment you go to sleep is that thing, that problem.

  47. Has that ever happened to you?

  48. It's happened to me.

  49. Sometimes, when we're in that worried state,

  50. a well-meaning friend or family member will come alongside us

  51. and they will say something along these lines.

  52. Hey, don't worry about it.

  53. Don't worry about it.

  54. And as well-intentioned as those words are,

  55. they are, of course, 100% not effective.

  56. It's like throwing a cup of water on a raging fire.

  57. The words just evaporate.

  58. And they have no effect.

  59. It's like that song.

  60. As I was thinking of this passage, I was thinking of that song.

  61. Years ago, it was used for the National Lottery.

  62. Bobby McFerrin, Don't Worry, Be Happy.

  63. Have you ever heard that song?

  64. Here's a little song I wrote.

  65. You might want to sing it note for note.

  66. Don't worry, be happy.

  67. In every life, we have some trouble,

  68. but when you worry, you make it double.

  69. Don't worry, be happy.

  70. Don't worry, be happy.

  71. Now, that is a very catchy song,

  72. and it's very bad at treating worry.

  73. That's a great song to listen to when you're not worried

  74. and everything is fine,

  75. you're on your way to the beach and it's sunny.

  76. But when life is actually difficult

  77. and you're dealing with the anxiety

  78. that comes with living in a fallen world,

  79. that's the last song you want to hear.

  80. It's actually counterproductive

  81. because it'll just make you angry.

  82. It's superficial,

  83. as if stopping worrying was just like turning off a light switch.

  84. But when we consider the words of our Lord Jesus Christ

  85. in this passage this morning,

  86. we find something altogether different.

  87. He deals with worry in a profound and comprehensive way.

  88. Unlike our well-intentioned friends in that catchy song,

  89. Jesus' teaching on worry goes beneath the surface,

  90. underneath the symptoms,

  91. and gets right to the source of why we worry

  92. about the things that cause us trouble.

  93. And he shows us a better way,

  94. a way of his kingdom,

  95. the way of faith in him.

  96. Now before we jump into these verses,

  97. let's quickly just remind ourselves

  98. of where we are in our Bibles.

  99. Matthew 5, 6, and 7

  100. are the Sermon on the Mount.

  101. And that is Jesus teaching his disciples

  102. all about life in the kingdom of God.

  103. God's kingdom is a spiritual kingdom.

  104. It's not a military kingdom like the Roman kingdom.

  105. Remember Jesus said,

  106. my kingdom is not of this world.

  107. It's not a worldly military kingdom.

  108. God's kingdom is his realm of salvation

  109. and his rule of his lordship.

  110. To be a Christian,

  111. to be a disciple of Jesus,

  112. means to come into the kingdom

  113. by faith in Jesus.

  114. If you look back at chapter 4 of Matthew,

  115. verse 17,

  116. Jesus began his public ministry

  117. as the Messiah with these words,

  118. repent, turn from your sin,

  119. for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  120. The kingdom is here.

  121. Jesus is the king.

  122. He brings the kingdom.

  123. You enter into that kingdom

  124. through faith in him.

  125. So by turning from our sins to Jesus,

  126. we enter in.

  127. We submit to King Jesus.

  128. We serve him, worship him, obey him, enjoy him.

  129. That is what it means to be a Christian.

  130. Here in the Sermon on the Mount,

  131. Matthew chapter 5, 6, and 7,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  132. he's teaching his disciples

  133. what it means to be citizens of that kingdom.

  134. Here are the ethics of the kingdom.

  135. This is what it means to live as my disciples.

  136. And in this passage, in Matthew 6,

  137. he spends quite a long time,

  138. this is a considerable chunk

  139. of the Sermon on the Mount,

  140. and it deals with worry.

  141. The first thing we need to understand

  142. is that here in this passage,

  143. Jesus is addressing a specific type of worry.

  144. He is specifically addressing the problem

  145. of worrying about the necessities of life,

  146. the stuff that we need to live.

  147. Look at verse 31.

  148. He sums it up with these questions.

  149. What shall we eat?

  150. What shall we drink?

  151. What shall we wear?

  152. In Jesus' day,

  153. the struggle for the necessities of life,

  154. food, water, clothing,

  155. it was never ending.

  156. Normal people, like you and me,

  157. had to work really hard

  158. just to not die from starvation and thirst.

  159. Food had to be planted and nurtured,

  160. harvested, cooked all by hand,

  161. and even then,

  162. you were at the mercy of the weather

  163. because if it didn't rain,

  164. you didn't have a load of plumbing

  165. and irrigation systems.

  166. Your harvest would fail

  167. and you'd be in trouble.

  168. And even water had to be drawn from a well

  169. and brought to your house by hand.

  170. There were no taps.

  171. And in terms of clothing,

  172. people usually just had

  173. a handful of garments to their name,

  174. nothing more.

  175. You were considered very well off

  176. if you had more than one or two

  177. changes of clothes.

  178. So when Jesus says to his disciples here,

  179. he's sitting down with them,

  180. teaching them,

  181. this is what it means to be in my kingdom.

  182. He says, don't worry about food.

  183. Don't worry about what you're going to drink

  184. and what you're going to wear.

  185. It hits them in a way

  186. that it probably doesn't hit us immediately

  187. as people who live in the 21st century.

  188. Because we go down to Tesco

  189. and it's full of food.

  190. We open up our taps,

  191. it's full of water,

  192. and we have so much clothes

  193. that we actually run out of space

  194. of where to put them

  195. and we put them in clothes bags.

  196. But for these people hearing this,

  197. they're like,

  198. oh, that's what I spend

  199. most of my time trying to do

  200. is just get something to eat

  201. so I can make it to the next day.

  202. Now, you might be tempted to think,

  203. okay, well then,

  204. this doesn't really apply to us

  205. because now we have taps

  206. and we have Tesco.

  207. That's not the case.

  208. And here's why.

  209. Because when Jesus is speaking

  210. about food and drink and clothing,

  211. he's using those as examples

  212. of the necessities of life as a whole.

  213. These are the sort of things

  214. that we get focused on,

  215. what our immediate needs,

  216. our physical needs,

  217. the things that we need

  218. just to survive,

  219. the nuts and bolts,

  220. as it were,

  221. of everyday life.

  222. So while we don't have to worry

  223. about the availability of food

  224. or clothing,

  225. don't we still worry about life?

  226. How am I going to pay my bills this month?

  227. Will I have enough money

  228. to make it to the end of the month?

  229. How am I ever going to buy a house

  230. in this market?

  231. What am I going to retire on?

  232. What are my kids going to,

  233. what kind of world

  234. do my kids enter into?

  235. Are we going to have another recession?

  236. How am I supposed to pay rent

  237. and save for a mortgage?

  238. Am I going to be able

  239. to get a good job

  240. when I leave school?

  241. These are real needs.

  242. You need somewhere to live.

  243. You've got to pay your rent,

  244. you've got to heat your house,

  245. you've got to feed your kids,

  246. you've got to plan for the future.

  247. And then Jesus comes to us

  248. and he says,

  249. don't worry.

  250. Now if all Jesus said to us

  251. is don't worry,

  252. I think he'd be just like

  253. that catchy song.

  254. Just don't worry about it.

  255. And it wouldn't be effective.

  256. But Jesus doesn't stop there.

  257. He doesn't just give us

  258. a bare command.

  259. He gives us reasons,

  260. real concrete reasons

  261. why we don't need to worry.

  262. And I think he gives us three

  263. that we're going to look at

  264. in the first half here.

  265. Two smaller ones

  266. and the third one

  267. he spends a lot more time on

  268. so I'd say that's the main one.

  269. The first smaller reason is this.

  270. Life, verse 25,

  271. life is about more

  272. than just meeting your needs.

  273. He makes this point

  274. in verse 25

  275. in the form of a question.

  276. Is not life more than food

  277. and the body more than clothing?

  278. The problem with it

  279. focusing exclusively

  280. on these things

  281. is that it reduces life

  282. down to them.

  283. It sort of shrinks life down.

  284. Worry monopolizes

  285. our thoughts

  286. and our energies.

  287. It consumes us

  288. to the point

  289. that we can't see

  290. beyond or above them.

  291. Worrying about

  292. the necessities of life

  293. eclipses

  294. the meaning of life

  295. from our view

  296. which is to glorify God,

  297. to know God

  298. and to enjoy Him

  299. forever.

  300. Reason number two,

  301. verse 27,

  302. again Jesus

  303. in the form of a question

  304. he makes the point

  305. worrying is futile.

  306. It doesn't do anything.

  307. Which of you

  308. by being anxious,

  309. he asks,

  310. can add a single hour

  311. to his life?

  312. You can't extend your life.

  313. You can't make yourself taller.

  314. You can't do any of those things.

  315. You're so limited.

  316. And he said,

  317. what about worrying

  318. will never accomplish

  319. these things?

  320. The only thing

  321. that worry accomplishes

  322. is sorrow.

  323. Worrying is futile.

  324. Someone once described worry

  325. as a rocking chair.

  326. It gives you something to do.

  327. You feel like you're doing something

  328. but you're going nowhere.

  329. All this energy

  330. and you're going nowhere.

  331. Third reason,

  332. verses 26 to 32,

  333. as I said,

  334. I think this is the main reason

  335. because of how much weight

  336. and time Jesus puts behind it.

  337. Your heavenly Father

  338. will provide.

  339. Your heavenly Father

  340. will provide.

  341. He comes at this point

  342. from a few different angles.

  343. I'm just going to read them quickly.

  344. Verse 26,

  345. he points to the birds.

  346. Look at the birds of the air.

  347. They neither sow nor reap

  348. nor gather into barns

  349. and yet your heavenly Father

  350. feeds them.

  351. Are you not of more value

  352. than they?

  353. Arguing from the lesser

  354. to the greater.

  355. This is true of the birds,

  356. my disciples.

  357. How much more so

  358. is it true of you?

  359. Child of God.

  360. Verse 28,

  361. he points to the flowers.

  362. Why are you anxious

  363. about clothing?

  364. Look at the lilies

  365. of the field,

  366. how they grow.

  367. They don't toil or spin

  368. yet I tell you,

  369. even Solomon,

  370. the rich, glorious

  371. king of Israel

  372. with all his wealth

  373. and pomp

  374. was never dressed

  375. as well as one of these.

  376. He says,

  377. if God so clothes

  378. the grass of the field,

  379. like today it's there,

  380. tomorrow it's thrown

  381. into the oven,

  382. it's gone.

  383. How much more so

  384. will he clothe you,

  385. oh you of little faith?

  386. Your heavenly Father

  387. will provide.

  388. And again,

  389. verse 31,

  390. he comes at it again

  391. from a different angle.

  392. He speaks to the Gentiles,

  393. those who don't know God.

  394. And he says,

  395. therefore do not be anxious

  396. asking what shall we eat,

  397. what shall we drink,

  398. what shall we wear.

  399. For the Gentiles,

  400. those who don't know God,

  401. run after all these things.

  402. And your heavenly Father

  403. knows that you do need them.

  404. He knows that you need them all.

  405. Don't be like the Gentiles

  406. who don't know God,

  407. who are just focused

  408. exclusively on these things,

  409. as if this is the whole,

  410. this is the be all

  411. and end all of life.

  412. Brothers and sisters,

  413. listen to what Jesus

  414. is saying to you this morning.

  415. God, your Father,

  416. knows everything

  417. that you need.

  418. And he will give it to you.

  419. If you need it,

  420. then you either have it

  421. or you're going to have it

  422. in his timing.

  423. And if you never get it,

  424. it's because you never needed it.

  425. God knows everything

  426. that you need.

  427. I don't even know

  428. everything that I need.

  429. As a parent,

  430. you look at your children,

  431. as an analogy,

  432. you look at your children

  433. and see oftentimes

  434. they need to go through

  435. tough things

  436. that they don't want

  437. to go through

  438. in order to grow

  439. and develop.

  440. How much more so

  441. will our God give us

  442. what we need,

  443. not just the necessities,

  444. even the challenges

  445. and the pains of this life,

  446. so that we grow

  447. in our trust in him.

  448. God will provide

  449. everything that we need.

  450. Jesus says,

  451. you don't have to be anxious

  452. about your life.

  453. You can trust him.

  454. Worry is a powerful thing.

  455. Jesus deals with it

  456. in a powerful way.

  457. He's given us

  458. these three reasons.

  459. Life is about more

  460. than just your needs.

  461. Worrying is futile.

  462. God is your father.

  463. He will provide.

  464. But Jesus doesn't stop there.

  465. He drills down deeper

  466. right to the very source

  467. of worry.

  468. Look at the end

  469. of verse 30 again.

  470. He says,

  471. oh you of little faith.

  472. That's what Jesus points to.

  473. Not that they had no faith.

  474. They were his disciples.

  475. He said,

  476. this worry that you have

  477. about your needs,

  478. the necessities of life,

  479. it comes from

  480. weak or small faith.

  481. He's saying,

  482. this isn't how you should live

  483. as my disciples.

  484. Now,

  485. I need to pause here

  486. for a second

  487. and make a very important

  488. clarifying point.

  489. we must be careful

  490. not to confuse

  491. the worry that Jesus

  492. is addressing

  493. in this passage

  494. with other things

  495. in the Christian life

  496. such as

  497. normal sadness

  498. and lament.

  499. Let me explain

  500. what I mean.

  501. Worry due to a lack of faith

  502. is very different

  503. to sadness.

  504. Psalm 142,

  505. David said,

  506. with my voice,

  507. I cry out to the Lord

  508. with my voice,

  509. I plead for mercy

  510. to the Lord,

  511. I pour out my complaint

  512. to him,

  513. I tell my trouble

  514. before him.

  515. To put it simply,

  516. David is sad,

  517. he is low,

  518. he is in a dark place

  519. and if David was there

  520. next to you

  521. and you had this scripture

  522. in Matthew 6,

  523. it would be wrong

  524. to be like,

  525. don't worry,

  526. you're fine.

  527. That would be a misuse

  528. of scripture,

  529. wouldn't it?

  530. He's feeling the brokenness

  531. of this world,

  532. it's sadness,

  533. that's good

  534. to lament

  535. and feel sad.

  536. Worry due to a lack of faith

  537. is different

  538. also

  539. to normal concern.

  540. 1 Corinthians 11,

  541. the Apostle Paul

  542. writes this,

  543. he says,

  544. he speaks of

  545. the daily pressure on me

  546. and my anxiety

  547. for all the churches.

  548. I don't think

  549. he's referring

  550. to the same sort of anxiety

  551. that Jesus is referencing.

  552. Paul is simply saying this,

  553. I am concerned

  554. for how the churches

  555. that have been planted

  556. under my ministry

  557. and the ministry of others,

  558. I'm concerned

  559. that they're going well.

  560. That's not a sinful anxiety,

  561. that's just normal concern,

  562. the way that parents

  563. are concerned

  564. for their children

  565. or the way that

  566. if some of you perhaps

  567. are waiting for

  568. leaving cert results

  569. or junior cert results,

  570. that's a normal concern

  571. and yes,

  572. of course,

  573. it can twist into worry

  574. and a mistrust of God

  575. or distrust of God

  576. but in and of itself,

  577. that's normal.

  578. You see the point

  579. I'm trying to get at?

  580. We need to be able

  581. to distinguish

  582. between those things.

  583. We don't want to come up

  584. to someone

  585. who is just having

  586. a hard time

  587. and slap Matthew 6,

  588. do not worry on them

  589. and think that's going

  590. to heal everything.

  591. The worry that Jesus

  592. is addressing here

  593. comes from a lack of faith.

  594. That is its source.

  595. It's not just

  596. some isolated issue,

  597. it's rooted,

  598. Jesus says,

  599. in what we value

  600. the most.

  601. Did you notice

  602. that this passage

  603. in verse 25

  604. begins with the word

  605. therefore.

  606. This word therefore

  607. tells us

  608. that everything

  609. he's just said

  610. about worry

  611. flows from

  612. and out of

  613. in continuity

  614. with everything

  615. he's just said beforehand.

  616. They're all

  617. put together.

  618. when we jump

  619. back to verse 19

  620. where I think

  621. his train

  622. of thought

  623. begins,

  624. we see that

  625. Jesus has been

  626. teaching his disciples

  627. specifically

  628. about what

  629. they are to

  630. value the most.

  631. Let's look at them

  632. quickly in three chunks.

  633. First verses

  634. 19 to 21.

  635. Do not lay up

  636. for yourselves

  637. treasure in heaven

  638. where moth

  639. and rust

  640. destroy,

  641. where thieves

  642. break in and steal,

  643. but instead

  644. lay up for yourselves

  645. treasure in heaven

  646. instead of on earth

  647. where neither moth

  648. nor rust destroys

  649. and where thieves

  650. do not break in and steal.

  651. For where your treasure

  652. is,

  653. there your heart

  654. will be also.

  655. He says,

  656. as my disciples,

  657. you are to value,

  658. to treasure

  659. the things that are above,

  660. the things of heaven

  661. and focus your hearts

  662. on those things.

  663. because whatever you

  664. treasure,

  665. whatever you value,

  666. that's what your heart,

  667. your inner compass

  668. is going to point towards

  669. and say,

  670. that's true north

  671. and your life

  672. is going to fall in line

  673. with that direction.

  674. He says,

  675. don't put true north,

  676. don't focus your heart,

  677. don't treasure

  678. the things of this earth

  679. because they pass away.

  680. Wrath

  681. and rust,

  682. moth and rust

  683. destroy those things.

  684. even Olympic medals,

  685. money

  686. and fame.

  687. Earthly glory

  688. will pass away

  689. along with earth

  690. itself one day.

  691. Jesus says,

  692. value the things

  693. that cannot be taken

  694. away from you.

  695. Lay up treasure in heaven.

  696. Next,

  697. verses 22 to 23.

  698. The eye

  699. is the lamp

  700. of the body.

  701. So,

  702. if your eye

  703. is healthy,

  704. your whole body

  705. will be full of light.

  706. But if your eye

  707. is bad,

  708. your whole body

  709. will be full

  710. of darkness.

  711. If then the light

  712. in you is darkness,

  713. how great

  714. is

  715. the darkness?

  716. Jesus

  717. is referring

  718. to a commonly

  719. held belief

  720. at that time

  721. that light

  722. would come

  723. into your body

  724. through your eye.

  725. It was sort of

  726. the window of the soul.

  727. We still say that today.

  728. But that light

  729. was good for you.

  730. It certainly is sunshine.

  731. It goes in

  732. through your eyes

  733. and fills up

  734. your whole body

  735. with light

  736. and brings health

  737. and vitality.

  738. And Jesus

  739. is taking

  740. that commonly

  741. held belief

  742. and he's

  743. transposing it

  744. or using it

  745. to speak

  746. of a spiritual

  747. reality.

  748. He says,

  749. if you fix

  750. your eyes,

  751. the spiritual

  752. eyes of your heart,

  753. if you want

  754. to put it that way,

  755. the spiritual

  756. sense that you

  757. have on what

  758. is true,

  759. on the light,

  760. then your whole

  761. body,

  762. your whole life

  763. will be filled

  764. with light.

  765. It will bring

  766. goodness

  767. and truth

  768. and health.

  769. But if not,

  770. if your spiritual

  771. sight is bad

  772. and you're

  773. focused on

  774. the wrong

  775. things,

  776. not heavenly

  777. things,

  778. but earthly

  779. things,

  780. then oh,

  781. how great

  782. that darkness

  783. will be.

  784. You see how

  785. it's following

  786. on from the

  787. treasure?

  788. What are you

  789. looking at?

  790. What are you

  791. valuing?

  792. What are you

  793. valuing?

  794. And finally,

  795. verse 24,

  796. again,

  797. he's using

  798. these contrasts.

  799. He says,

  800. no one

  801. can serve

  802. two masters.

  803. For you

  804. either hate

  805. the one

  806. and love

  807. the other

  808. or he

  809. will be

  810. devoted

  811. to the

  812. one

  813. and despise

  814. the other.

  815. You

  816. cannot

  817. serve

  818. God

  819. and money.

  820. That word

  821. money there

  822. can also

  823. just be

  824. translated

  825. stuff,

  826. things,

  827. material

  828. goods.

  829. What's

  830. Jesus

  831. getting

  832. at here

  833. in verses

  834. 19 to

  835. 24?

  836. If you

  837. want to

  838. put it

  839. in the

  840. form of

  841. a question,

  842. he's

  843. asking this,

  844. what do

  845. you

  846. treasure

  847. above

  848. all?

  849. What do

  850. you look

  851. at with

  852. the eyes

  853. of your

  854. heart?

  855. And who

  856. are you

  857. serving?

  858. He says,

  859. you can't

  860. serve God

  861. and stuff.

  862. And then

  863. so when

  864. he says

  865. therefore,

  866. he's going

  867. right along

  868. and he's

  869. saying,

  870. therefore,

  871. do not

  872. worry about

  873. the things

  874. that you

  875. need.

  876. Because

  877. those who

  878. don't know

  879. God,

  880. focus on

  881. these things

  882. because that's

  883. where their

  884. treasure is,

  885. that's what

  886. they serve,

  887. that's what

  888. they truly

  889. value.

  890. He said,

  891. it's not

  892. meant to

  893. be like

  894. that for

  895. you.

  896. You

  897. belong to

  898. God the

  899. Father.

  900. You're

  901. in the

  902. kingdom.

  903. Seek the

  904. things that

  905. are above.

  906. And God

  907. will give

  908. you all

  909. the things

  910. that you

  911. need.

  912. Jesus

  913. is not

  914. denying

  915. our

  916. physical

  917. needs.

  918. Your

  919. heavenly

  920. Father knows

  921. that you

  922. need them

  923. all.

  924. life is

  925. about so

  926. much more

  927. than just

  928. food and

  929. drink and

  930. clothing and

  931. bills and

  932. holidays and

  933. cars and

  934. exams and

  935. stuff.

  936. Beware of

  937. getting bogged

  938. down in the

  939. nuts and

  940. bolts of

  941. life and

  942. losing sight of

  943. the meaning

  944. of life.

  945. life is

  946. about knowing

  947. God and

  948. living with

  949. him.

  950. That is the

  951. joy of the

  952. Christian life,

  953. is it not?

  954. And that is a

  955. joy that will

  956. come to its

  957. climax when we

  958. are with

  959. him forever.

  960. This is just

  961. a foretaste

  962. of that

  963. joy.

  964. Life is

  965. about longing

  966. for his

  967. kingdom,

  968. seeking his

  969. righteousness

  970. and his

  971. kingdom to

  972. come, not

  973. only in our

  974. own lives,

  975. but across

  976. the world.

  977. that God's

  978. rule and

  979. reign and

  980. glory would

  981. be known

  982. all around

  983. the world

  984. that he has

  985. created.

  986. If we allow

  987. ourselves to

  988. be focused

  989. on those

  990. things,

  991. then we

  992. will not

  993. need to

  994. worry.

  995. If you're

  996. worried this

  997. morning, it's

  998. good to ask

  999. yourself, what

  1000. am I worried

  1001. about?

  1002. That's a good

  1003. first step.

  1004. A bit of

  1005. self-diagnosis.

  1006. Can I add to

  1007. your list of

  1008. questions?

  1009. When you're

  1010. really worried

  1011. and upset

  1012. about something,

  1013. ask yourself,

  1014. what am I

  1015. treasuring?

  1016. What am I

  1017. valuing the

  1018. most in

  1019. life right

  1020. now?

  1021. What am I

  1022. focusing on?

  1023. Where are

  1024. the eyes of

  1025. my heart

  1026. looking right

  1027. now?

  1028. And who

  1029. am I

  1030. serving?

  1031. Jesus says,

  1032. oh, you of

  1033. little faith,

  1034. I don't

  1035. think he

  1036. was saying

  1037. that as

  1038. some sort

  1039. of harsh

  1040. rebuke like,

  1041. you idiots.

  1042. He's trying to

  1043. say, don't

  1044. you see, oh,

  1045. you of little

  1046. faith, how

  1047. valuable you

  1048. are.

  1049. Friends, if you

  1050. were in Christ

  1051. this morning, if

  1052. we could have a

  1053. glimmer of a

  1054. sight of the

  1055. love of God

  1056. for us in

  1057. Christ Jesus,

  1058. we would never

  1059. doubt again that

  1060. he would ever

  1061. provide for us.

  1062. You think God

  1063. is short on

  1064. cash?

  1065. Do you think he

  1066. forgets things,

  1067. that he lets

  1068. things slide?

  1069. He will always

  1070. provide for his

  1071. people.

  1072. Always.

  1073. Take these

  1074. words of the

  1075. Lord Jesus

  1076. Christ and

  1077. hammer them

  1078. deep into

  1079. your heart.

  1080. Preach them

  1081. to yourself.

  1082. Say, God is

  1083. my Father, he

  1084. will provide.

  1085. God is my

  1086. Father, he

  1087. will provide.

  1088. God is my

  1089. Father, he

  1090. will provide.

  1091. He knows

  1092. everything that

  1093. I need and

  1094. he will provide

  1095. it for me in

  1096. Christ Jesus.

  1097. To put it

  1098. another way,

  1099. Christian, you

  1100. are free to

  1101. not worry about

  1102. your life.

  1103. You have

  1104. concerns, you

  1105. still have to

  1106. plan for the

  1107. future, there

  1108. are still

  1109. problems to be

  1110. dealt with.

  1111. This is not

  1112. don't worry, be

  1113. happy, catchy

  1114. song approach to

  1115. life.

  1116. But it is to

  1117. say in the

  1118. worry and the

  1119. stresses of life

  1120. that we don't

  1121. have to worry

  1122. about these

  1123. things.

  1124. The alternative

  1125. to worry,

  1126. according to

  1127. Jesus, isn't

  1128. caring about

  1129. nothing, it's

  1130. caring about

  1131. the right

  1132. things in

  1133. the right

  1134. order.

  1135. It's a life

  1136. where we keep

  1137. the first

  1138. things first.

  1139. That's why he

  1140. says at the

  1141. end there,

  1142. verse 33,

  1143. seek first the

  1144. kingdom of

  1145. God and his

  1146. righteousness and

  1147. then all these

  1148. things will be

  1149. added to you.

  1150. He's not saying

  1151. don't go

  1152. shopping.

  1153. Like, God

  1154. will provide

  1155. for me, I

  1156. don't have to

  1157. go shopping.

  1158. Of course you

  1159. do.

  1160. You've got to

  1161. plan for your

  1162. future, you've

  1163. got to plan

  1164. financially, you've

  1165. got to be smart

  1166. and use the

  1167. brain that God

  1168. gave you.

  1169. You don't have

  1170. to worry about

  1171. these things, seek

  1172. first the

  1173. kingdom.

  1174. If you want

  1175. to worry less,

  1176. don't just say,

  1177. I want to

  1178. worry less.

  1179. Pray and ask

  1180. God to help

  1181. you to

  1182. recalibrate your

  1183. heart, to

  1184. maybe correct

  1185. the compass

  1186. back to the

  1187. things that are

  1188. most important.

  1189. Him and his

  1190. kingdom and

  1191. seeking his

  1192. righteousness.

  1193. You can

  1194. trust God

  1195. with everything

  1196. else.

  1197. Yes, you're

  1198. going to work

  1199. a job, you're

  1200. going to pay

  1201. your bills, deal

  1202. with stress and

  1203. setbacks and

  1204. uncertainties, but

  1205. you're not going

  1206. to let that take

  1207. over your life and

  1208. let that be the

  1209. be all and end

  1210. all.

  1211. Instead, resolve

  1212. to seek first the

  1213. kingdom, to

  1214. submit to Jesus

  1215. as your king, and

  1216. to lay up

  1217. treasure in

  1218. heaven.

  1219. Jesus ends

  1220. this teaching

  1221. with this

  1222. concluding point

  1223. in verse 34.

  1224. He says,

  1225. therefore, in

  1226. light of

  1227. everything that

  1228. I've just

  1229. told you, don't

  1230. be anxious about

  1231. tomorrow, for

  1232. tomorrow will be

  1233. anxious for

  1234. itself, sufficient

  1235. for the day is

  1236. its own trouble.

  1237. I love the way

  1238. that Jesus limits

  1239. us as his

  1240. disciples in this

  1241. verse.

  1242. He says, don't

  1243. worry about

  1244. tomorrow.

  1245. Don't worry about

  1246. next week, or how

  1247. are you going to

  1248. provide for this, or

  1249. how are you going

  1250. to get that, and

  1251. if that's ever going

1252. to happen, how am I

  1253. going to provide for

  1254. my children?

  1255. He says, just focus

  1256. on today, that's

  1257. plenty.

  1258. Don't let the

  1259. worries of the

  1260. future stop you

  1261. from following me

  1262. and trusting me

  1263. today.

  1264. Worry is a

  1265. powerful thing.

  1266. Jesus is greater

  1267. and more powerful

  1268. than our worries, and

  1269. he will provide

  1270. everything that we

  1271. need.

  1272. If you're here this

  1273. morning and you're

  1274. not a Christian, I

  1275. wonder if you've

  1276. ever thought about

  1277. the Christian life in

  1278. these terms.

  1279. I hope that by

  1280. looking at God's

  1281. word, the Bible,

  1282. with us this

  1283. morning, you've

  1284. seen that life is

  1285. about so much more

  1286. than just stuff.

  1287. It's about living

  1288. with God and for

  1289. God, and how

  1290. freeing that is.

1291. I pray for us all

  1292. this morning as we

  1293. look ahead to the

  1294. future, as you look

  1295. ahead to the future,

  1296. is that you will

  1297. treasure what is

  1298. good and true, that

  1299. you will lay up

  1300. treasure in heaven, and

  1301. that you will trust

  1302. Jesus the King.

  1303. You keep your eyes

  1304. fixed on him, serve

1305. him, one day at a

  1306. time until you see

  1307. him.

  1308. As we've sung already

  1309. this morning, riches I

  1310. heed not, nor man's

  1311. empty praise.

  1312. Thou my inheritance,

  1313. now and always.

  1314. Thou and thou only

  1315. the first in my

  1316. heart.

  1317. Thou high King of

  1318. heaven, my treasure

  1319. thou art.

  1320. Let's pray.

  1321. Father in heaven, we

  1322. pray that you would

1323. help us to take the

  1324. teaching of Jesus

  1325. Christ, our Lord, to

  1326. heart.

  1327. Lord, I pray where

  1328. our compass is off

1329. and where we are out

  1330. of alignment and our

  1331. priorities have slipped

  1332. and been jumbled, we

1333. pray, Lord, that by your

1334. spirit you would help us

  1335. correct them.

1336. Pray for those, Lord, who

  1337. are this morning worried

  1338. about serious problems

  1339. and anxious for the

  1340. future, that you would

  1341. calm their hearts.

1342. We thank you that Jesus'

  1343. words here are not

  1344. trite and superficial,

  1345. but deep because they

1346. point us towards you, the

1347. fount of all wisdom and

  1348. glory and love and

  1349. provision.

1350. Father, you have made us

1351. and we trust that as you

1352. are our Father in heaven,

1353. you will provide for us all

1354. of our needs in your Son,

  1355. Jesus Christ.

1356. Help us, we pray, day to

  1357. day.

1358. And we pray that your

  1359. kingdom and your

  1360. righteousness would come in

  1361. our lives and in

  1362. Carrig Line and in

  1363. Carrig Tool and around

1364. this world, we pray for

  1365. the glory of Jesus.

  1366. Amen.

  1367. Amen.

  1368. Thank you, Kevin.

1369. We are going to sing in

  1370. response.

  1371. It's another catchy tune,

1372. but it's not full of bad

  1373. advice.

  1374. It is going to...
