  1. Habakkuk, Habakkuk, whatever way you say it. I think they say Habakkuk in America. I think

  2. we say Habakkuk in Ireland, but I won't get into an argument with anyone over it. Habakkuk,

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  3. chapter 1. That's on page 940, and you're going to need a page number this morning for

  4. that, 940. It's a small book, just three chapters, and we're going to take the next three weeks

  5. together to study what God has to say to us through it.

  6. So we're going to read from chapter 1, verse 1, up until chapter 2, and verse 4 today.

  7. Before we start, let's pray. Let's commit this time to the Lord.

  8. Lord, what we're about to read isn't all easy. We need your help.

  9. Or we find it hard to understand your ways and to trust you. God, give us grace now to hear

  10. what your word has to say to us. In Jesus' name, amen.

  11. Do you ever get overwhelmed by the injustice and suffering in the world around you?

  12. Do you ever pray about it and wonder why God continues to allow it to happen?

  13. A few months ago, you would have heard in the news that an army officer walked free from a

  14. Limerick courtroom after knocking a woman unconscious on the streets of Limerick and bragging about

  15. it to his friends.

  16. Elsewhere on our city streets, drug dealers exploit vulnerable young people to sell drugs while they

  17. themselves get off scot-free, living lives of luxury.

  18. Further afield, in Ukraine, you may have heard this in the news,

  19. tens of thousands of children have been forcibly deported to Russia with no promise of ever being returned.

  20. In the Israel-Hamas war, approximately 30,000 civilians have been killed.

  21. And over a hundred hostages remain in captivity.

  22. All of this and more.

  23. It makes us cry out with Habakkuk.

  24. In verse 2, read with me.

  25. How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?

  26. Or cry out to you, violence, but you do not save?

  27. Why do you make me look at injustice?

  28. Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?

  29. Destruction and violence are before me.

  30. There is strife and conflict abounds.

  31. Therefore, the law is paralyzed and justice never prevails.

  32. The wicked hem in the righteous so that justice is perverted.

  33. Habakkuk has the honesty to say out loud what we're all thinking.

  34. When we see justice being perverted time and time again.

  35. And what follows is this gripping dialogue between this weary, doubting man and his God,

  36. which we really need to hear today.

  37. This text is going to show us how to talk to God about the ugly realities of injustice and suffering.

  38. What to do when God seems deaf to our cries.

  39. Or when his answers are too difficult to accept.

  40. And finally, we're going to learn how God calls us to live by faith as we struggle with all of these things.

  41. And we're going to walk through this text in the structure that it gives us.

  42. Habakkuk speaks.

  43. God responds.

  44. Then Habakkuk responds to God.

  45. And God has his final word.

  46. So let's start with Habakkuk's questions, which we just read there.

  47. And I wonder, did those questions make you feel just a little bit uncomfortable?

  48. I mean, is it okay to express frustration and doubt like that to God?

  49. I mean, look at verse 2.

  50. He asks, how long, Lord, must I call for help?

  51. But you do not listen.

  52. Now, Habakkuk is a prophet of God.

  53. He knows the scriptures back to front.

  54. He obviously knows that God listens to our cries.

  55. But he's living in Judah at this moment in time.

  56. And this nation is spiraling out of control and wickedness.

  57. He is frustrated and he's wearied from the rampant injustice he sees around him.

  58. And right now in this moment, he honestly feels like God isn't listening to his prayers.

  59. That's real life, isn't it?

  60. There's no glossing over the truth.

  61. We get tired.

  62. We get tired of praying the same prayers over and over and not seeing any change.

  63. We say, what's the point in praying about this anymore?

  64. Why is God just letting it happen?

  65. And yes, deep down in our hearts, we know that God does hear every cry of ours.

  66. We know Romans 8.28.

  67. He works everything for good.

  68. But some days we just don't feel it.

  69. Is that okay?

  70. Well, I think the first thing that we learn from Habakkuk here is that God can take our honest questions.

  71. He can handle our doubts.

  72. Tomorrow, I might have total faith that he's listening and he's working everything out for good.

  73. But Habakkuk shows us that it's okay to be honest with God if we don't feel it today.

  74. God can handle our honest questions.

  75. He wants us to come to him with our doubts, not to pull away.

  76. But what's also really important to note here is how Habakkuk asks his honest questions.

  77. And it's a humble asking.

  78. This is no arrogant, I know better than you, rant,

  79. with one foot already out the door to leave.

  80. No, Habakkuk isn't giving up on God here.

  81. That's clear.

  82. Neither is this a kind of superficial glossing over the situation or the pain he feels,

  83. pretending it doesn't exist.

  84. No, both those are wrong.

  85. No, this is a humble asking.

  86. Where Habakkuk asks his honest questions about his pain.

  87. And even if he has to wait to get an answer, he's staying.

  88. And we can follow Habakkuk's example here as we bring our questions to God

  89. about the pain and injustice that we can't understand.

  90. Even the very asking of those questions is an act of faith in and of itself.

  91. So first, we bring our honest questions to God and we ask humbly,

  92. waiting for his answer.

  93. Now, I know what you're thinking.

  94. That's all well and good, Sam.

  95. But what about when God's answer isn't what I asked for?

  96. What if nothing changes for months or years?

  97. What if the pain or the injustice simply gets worse?

  98. Well, this is actually what happened to Habakkuk.

  99. Because after Habakkuk's honest questions, in verse 5,

  100. come God's difficult answers.

  101. And it's going to feel for all the world like God is failing him.

  102. But God's difficult answers are not the end of the story.

  103. Not for us.

  104. Not for Habakkuk.

  105. Let's hear God's response in verse 5.

  106. He says,

  107. Look at the nations and watch, and be utterly amazed.

  108. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not even believe,

  109. even if you were told.

  110. And I think the first thing to note here

  111. is that God's difficult answers are not as we expect.

  112. God reminds Habakkuk and us that his ways are so much higher than ours.

  113. We were hearing that already from what Connor shared from Romans this morning.

  114. In fact, we should not expect to understand all of God's actions in our world, should we?

  115. It shouldn't surprise us if we don't get it,

  116. or can't see how this situation works for good,

  117. because God is the all-knowing, perfectly just creator,

  118. who sees everything from beginning to end.

  119. But that's hard to trust, isn't it, in the middle of a crisis?

  120. And I think it all boils down to this.

  121. Are we willing to trust God

  122. with the things that we don't expect

  123. and the things that don't make sense?

  124. Let's continue.

  125. In verse 6, with God's difficult, unexpected answer.

  126. Here it is, verse 6.

  127. I am raising up the Babylonians,

  128. that ruthless and impetuous people

  129. who will sweep across the whole earth

  130. to seize dwellings not their own.

  131. They are a feared and dreaded people.

  132. They are a law to themselves

  133. and promote their own honor.

  134. Their horses are swifter than leopards,

  135. fiercer than wolves at dusk.

  136. Their cavalry gallops headlong.

  137. Their horsemen come from afar.

  138. They fly like an eagle, swooping to devour.

  139. They all come intent on violence.

  140. Their hordes advance like a desert wind

  141. and gather prisoners like sand.

  142. They mock kings and scoff at rulers.

  143. They laugh at all fortified cities.

  144. By building earthen ramps, they capture them.

  145. Then they sweep past like the wind and go on.

  146. Guilty people whose own strength is their God.

  147. Let's be real.

  148. This is Habakkuk's worst nightmare.

  149. Can you imagine the horror of God telling you directly

  150. that your country will be overrun by a ruthless army

  151. who will destroy, kill, and take captive?

  152. And for Habakkuk, worse still.

  153. God is the one sending them.

  154. God says it himself in verse 6.

  155. He says, I am raising up the Babylonians.

  156. This text tells us straight out

  157. that God raises up evil nations

  158. to do evil things

  159. within his perfect plan

  160. for his people and his world.

  161. And this difficult answer plunges Habakkuk and us

  162. into a painful struggle.

  163. And this is a struggle that God's servants

  164. in every age have gone through.

  165. How can God be holy and good

  166. and yet sovereign over evil?

  167. But before we delve more into this,

  168. just notice in verse 12

  169. how Habakkuk addresses God

  170. in the middle of this struggle.

  171. He uses words like,

  172. my Lord,

  173. my God,

  174. my Holy One,

  175. my Rock.

  176. That's the kind of language that says,

  177. I'm coming to you, Lord,

  178. because I know you're faithful.

  179. Even if I don't understand what you're doing.

  180. Even if I'm confused and angry.

  181. You're still my Lord.

  182. You're still my Rock.

  183. On which I stand.

  184. What a way to approach

  185. those painful struggles in our lives.

  186. Saying,

  187. Lord, you are still my Rock.

  188. Even in the middle of this.

  189. To where else can I go?

  190. So in that light,

  191. let's delve into Habakkuk's struggle

  192. to square God's goodness

  193. with his sovereignty over evil.

  194. Let's read together from verse 12.

  195. Lord,

  196. are you not from everlasting?

  197. My God,

  198. my Holy One,

  199. you will never die.

  200. You, Lord,

  201. have appointed them

  202. to execute judgment.

  203. You,

  204. my Rock,

  205. have ordained them

  206. to punish.

  207. Verse 13,

  208. your eyes are too pure

  209. to look on evil.

  210. You cannot tolerate wrongdoing.

  211. Why then do you tolerate

  212. the treacherous?

  213. Why are you silent?

  214. While the wicked

  215. swallow up those more righteous

  216. than themselves.

  217. And we're all with Habakkuk here,

  218. aren't we?

  219. I mean,

  220. he rightly points out,

  221. God,

  222. you're holy.

  223. Your eyes are too pure

  224. to look on evil.

  225. How can you be

  226. sovereign over evil

  227. and still good?

  228. Well,

  229. as we read on in Habakkuk,

  230. actually in chapter 2,

  231. we'll see that

  232. while God is 100%

  233. sovereign over evil,

  234. people are also

  235. 100% responsible

  236. for the evil

  237. that they do.

  238. we're going to read

  239. in chapter 2

  240. how God pronounces judgment

  241. on this nation

  242. of Babylon

  243. for their wickedness.

  244. God speaks of them

  245. as having total control

  246. over their actions.

  247. They choose

  248. the evil

  249. that they're going to bring

  250. upon Israel.

  251. And yet,

  252. equally true

  253. was that God

  254. was totally sovereign

  255. over those evil choices

  256. to achieve his purposes

  257. for his people.

  258. God is 100% sovereign.

  259. People are 100% responsible.

  260. Both true

  261. at the same time.

  262. A profound mystery

  263. that God has chosen

  264. not to fully explain

  265. to us.

  266. And again,

  267. we come back

  268. to the same question.

  269. Are we willing

  270. to trust God

  271. with the difficult answers

  272. he gives,

  273. the things

  274. that we don't

  275. yet understand?

  276. Even when the answer

  277. he gives

  278. is the thing

  279. that we fear the most

  280. as for Habakkuk.

  281. Will we stay around?

  282. Or will we walk

  283. out the door on him?

  284. Habakkuk,

  285. while completely devastated,

  286. he's staying.

  287. And in an act of faith,

  288. he continues

  289. to struggle

  290. with God

  291. in prayer.

  292. So,

  293. from verses 14

  294. on to 16,

  295. he compares Babylon

  296. to this greedy angler,

  297. like a fisherman,

  298. who mercilessly

  299. just hoards

  300. people like fish

  301. into his net

  302. while living

  303. in luxury.

  304. Let's pick it up

  305. in verse 17.

  306. Is he,

  307. Babylon,

  308. to keep on

  309. emptying his net,

  310. destroying nations

  311. without mercy?

  312. I will stand

  313. at my watch

  314. and station myself

  315. on the ramparts.

  316. I will look

  317. to see

  318. what he will say

  319. to me

  320. and what answer

  321. I am to give

  322. to this complaint.

  323. Well,

  324. what's your painful

  325. struggle today?

  326. You prayed

  327. for hope

  328. and God gave you

  329. something you never

  330. expected.

  331. maybe even

  332. the thing

  333. you dreaded

  334. the most.

  335. And like Habakkuk

  336. in verse 17,

  337. you honestly

  338. ask God,

  339. will this ever end?

  340. How is God

  341. good

  342. in this situation?

  343. We're all

  344. in the same struggle

  345. and it feels

  346. like we are

  347. standing

  348. up there

  349. on the city

  350. walls

  351. with Habakkuk.

  352. What an epic

  353. scene.

  354. and we

  355. need

  356. answers

  357. and we're

  358. going to

  359. wait for them.

  360. We're standing

  361. on those city

  362. walls

  363. as it were.

  364. We've got

  365. no one else

  366. to turn to.

  367. We're going

  368. to God.

  369. The scene

  370. is set.

  371. Everything

  372. is out

  373. on the table

  374. and God

  375. is about

  376. to give

  377. his response.

  378. what will

  379. he say?

  380. Let's read

  381. from verse 2.

  382. Then the

  383. Lord replied,

  384. write down

  385. the revelation

  386. and make it

  387. plain on

  388. tablets so

  389. that a

  390. herald may

  391. run with

  392. it.

  393. For the

  394. revelation

  395. awaits an

  396. appointed time.

  397. It speaks

  398. of the end

  399. and will

  400. not prove

  401. false.

  402. Though it

  403. linger,

  404. wait for

  405. it.

  406. It will

  407. certainly

  408. come.

  409. And will

  410. not

  411. delay.

  412. The

  413. revelation

  414. is spelled

  415. out in

  416. the rest

  417. of this

  418. chapter.

  419. And in

  420. summary,

  421. Babylon

  422. will be

  423. judged

  424. by God.

  425. But in

  426. the meantime,

  427. Habakkuk

  428. will have

  429. to wait.

  430. And sometimes

  431. that waiting

  432. feels unbearable,

  433. doesn't it?

  434. But God

  435. tells us

  436. how it

  437. is possible

  438. to wait

  439. patiently for

  440. his justice.

  441. And this

  442. is the

  443. climax

  444. statement.

  445. This is

  446. what it

  447. all comes

  448. down to

  449. in verse

  450. four.

  451. Let's

  452. read it

  453. together.

  454. See,

  455. the enemy

  456. is puffed

  457. up.

  458. His

  459. desires

  460. are not

  461. upright.

  462. But the

  463. righteous

  464. person

  465. will live

  466. by his

  467. faithfulness.

  468. Or simply

  469. put,

  470. will live

  471. by

  472. faith.

  473. That's

  474. how we

  475. can wait

  476. patiently

  477. in the

  478. struggle.

  479. God

  480. calls us

  481. to live

  482. by

  483. faith.

  484. This is

  485. the opposite

  486. of the

  487. ungodly.

  488. Did you

  489. notice that?

  490. They are

  491. puffed up.

  492. Or they

  493. live by

  494. their own

  495. strength.

  496. They don't

  497. need God.

  498. And in

  499. verse five

  500. it says

  501. they're never

  502. satisfied by

  503. all the

  504. things they

  505. accumulate,

  506. but not

  507. those who

  508. live by

  509. faith in

  510. God.

  511. Hebrews

  512. 11.1

  513. kind of

  514. helps us

  515. to understand

  516. what this

  517. word faith

  518. means.

  519. It says

  520. this,

  521. faith is

  522. confidence

  523. in what

  524. we hope

  525. for,

  526. and assurance

  527. about what

  528. we do

  529. not see.

  530. Everything

  531. in the

  532. Christian life

  533. ultimately

  534. boils down

  535. to this

  536. charge.

  537. Live

  538. by

  539. faith.

  540. And it

  541. starts with

  542. our salvation,

  543. doesn't it?

  544. How can

  545. sinful people

  546. be made

  547. right with

  548. God?

  549. Well,

  550. we place

  551. our faith

  552. in Jesus'

  553. perfect

  554. obedience

  555. for us,

  556. and death

  557. for our

  558. sin.

  559. We live

  560. by faith

  561. in him.

  562. What's

  563. the key

  564. to patient

  565. endurance

  566. as we

  567. wait for

  568. God's

  569. justice?

  570. Well,

  571. we live

  572. by faith

  573. in God's

  574. future

  575. judgment.

  576. What's

  577. the key

  578. to not

  579. giving up

  580. when we

  581. don't

  582. understand

  583. what God's

  584. doing?

  585. Well,

  586. we live

  587. by faith

  588. in God's

  589. perfect

  590. wisdom.

  591. Don't

  592. you see

  593. how

  594. our

  595. whole

  596. life

  597. in

  598. Christ

  599. is

  600. lived

  601. by

  602. faith

  603. from

  604. start

  605. to

  606. finish.

  607. But as

  608. we come

  609. to the

  610. end,

  611. I want

  612. to leave

  613. you with

  614. an

  615. encouragement

  616. to

  617. continue

  618. praying

  619. in the

  620. struggle

  621. like

  622. Habakkuk

  623. did.

  624. And it

  625. goes back

  626. to his

  627. very first

  628. question.

  629. Do you

  630. remember that

  631. at the

  632. start?

  633. God,

  634. are you

  635. even

  636. listening?

  637. And in

  638. Revelation 5,

  639. John

  640. sees right

  641. into the

  642. throne room

  643. of heaven.

  644. And this

  645. is what

  646. we see.

  647. You can

  648. read along

  649. on the

  650. screen.

  651. Revelation

  652. 5,

  653. 8,

  654. the four

  655. creatures

  656. and the

  657. twenty-four

  658. elders

  659. fell down

  660. before the

  661. lamb.

  662. Each one

  663. had a

  664. harp.

  665. And they

  666. were holding

  667. golden

  668. bowls

  669. full of

  670. incense,

  671. which are

  672. the prayers

  673. of God's

  674. people.

  675. This is

  676. amazing.

  677. Your prayers

  678. and mine,

  679. they don't

  680. float into

  681. the abyss.

  682. God is

  683. never tuned

  684. out.

  685. The image

  686. here is

  687. of God

  688. collecting

  689. every one

  690. of your

  691. prayers in

  692. these golden

  693. bowls.

  694. They are a

  695. sweet-smelling

  696. incense to

  697. him.

  698. They delight

  699. him.

  700. He treasures

  701. every whisper

  702. of yours,

  703. every cry

  704. of desperation,

  705. every plea

  706. for justice.

  707. God stores

  708. away every

  709. one of your

  710. prayers,

  711. prayed

  712. according

  713. to his

  714. will.

  715. And why

  716. is he

  717. doing this?

  718. Well,

  719. I think it's

  720. worth us

  721. turning to

  722. Revelation

  723. together.

  724. Revelation

    Revelation 8:3

  725. chapter 8

  726. verse 3.

  727. We're going

  728. to see

  729. these golden

  730. bowls of

  731. our prayers

  732. reappear here.

  733. This is

  734. Revelation

    Revelation 8:3

  735. chapter 8

  736. verse 3.

  737. It's on

  738. page

  739. 1,239.

  740. Revelation

    Revelation 8:3

  741. 8 verse

  742. 3.

  743. I'm going

  744. to read

  745. down to

  746. verse 5.

  747. Another

  748. angel who

  749. had a

  750. golden censer

  751. came and

  752. stood at

  753. the altar.

  754. This is in

  755. the throne

  756. room of

  757. heaven.

  758. He was

  759. given much

  760. incense to

  761. offer with

  762. the prayers

  763. of all

  764. God's

  765. people on

  766. the golden

  767. altar in

  768. front of

  769. the throne.

  770. The smoke

  771. of the

  772. incense together

  773. with the

  774. prayers of

  775. God's people

  776. went up

  777. before God

  778. from the

  779. angel's

  780. hand.

  781. Then the

  782. angel took

  783. the censer,

  784. filled it

  785. with fire

  786. from the

  787. altar and

  788. hurled it

  789. on the

  790. earth.

  791. And there

  792. came peals

  793. of thunder,

  794. rumblings,

  795. flashes of

  796. lightning and

  797. an earthquake.

  798. Now there's

  799. a lot of

  800. vivid imagery

  801. for us to

  802. take in

  803. here, but

  804. just notice

  805. the prayers

  806. of God's

  807. people fuel

  808. the fire

  809. that is

  810. hurled onto

  811. the earth

  812. at the

  813. end of

  814. time.

  815. And that

  816. fire, we

  817. believe,

  818. represents God's

  819. coming judgment

  820. on all

  821. injustice

  822. and his

  823. renewal

  824. of the

  825. earth.

  826. One writer

  827. says it

  828. like this,

  829. you can

  830. follow along

  831. on the

  832. screen.

  833. The renewal

  834. of the

  835. world,

  836. heaven and

  837. earth,

  838. restored as

  839. one,

  840. begins

  841. with God

  842. pouring out

  843. all the

  844. prayers of

  845. his children

  846. like a

  847. purifying fire

  848. with one

  849. great

  850. resounding

  851. yes.

  852. I find that

  853. so encouraging.

  854. I hope you

  855. do too.

  856. the loved

  857. ones you

  858. prayed for

  859. who never

  860. got better,

  861. the pain

  862. that you

  863. prayed against

  864. that never

  865. went away,

  866. the injustice

  867. you prayed

  868. for that

  869. continued,

  870. unchecked,

  871. the peace

  872. you prayed

  873. for which

  874. never came.

  875. God treasures

  876. all of those

  877. prayers.

  878. And on the

  879. last day,

  880. God will use

  881. every one of

  882. those prayers

  883. to begin

  884. his renewal

  885. of all things.

  886. Death will

  887. die,

  888. pain will end,

  889. injustice and

  890. war will

  891. cease.

  892. The answer

  893. will be

  894. yes,

  895. yes and

  896. yes.

  897. Your prayers

  898. are not

  899. wasted breath.

  900. They're not

  901. ignored.

  902. Both Habakkuk's

  903. prayers and

  904. ours matter

  905. eternally.

  906. And God

  907. invites us

  908. to pray

  909. in faith

  910. as we

  911. patiently

  912. wait for

  913. God to

  914. act.

  915. so bring

  916. to him

  917. your honest

  918. questions

  919. and your

  920. doubts.

  921. Lay them

  922. before him.

  923. And when

  924. his answers

  925. just don't

  926. make sense

  927. to you,

  928. stay in

  929. the struggle

  930. in prayer.

  931. Remember

  932. God's charge

  933. to you

  934. today.

  935. Live

  936. by faith

  937. in the

  938. sovereign

  939. judge who

  940. will right

  941. all wrongs

  942. and he will

  943. make all

  944. things new.

  945. Live by

  946. faith in

  947. the only

  948. savior

  949. Jesus

  950. whose

  951. unjust

  952. death

  953. bought

  954. your

  955. forgiveness.

  956. Live by

  957. faith

  958. in the

  959. wise

  960. loving

  961. shepherd

  962. who leads

  963. you

  964. through the

  965. valley of

  966. pain.

  967. Let's

  968. pray to

  969. him now.

  970. Lord, we

  971. so desperately

  972. need your

  973. help with

  974. this

  975. because we

  976. feel the

  977. sting of

  978. injustice and

  979. pain and we

  980. doubt your

  981. goodness.

  982. Give us

  983. faith

  984. to trust

  985. you when

  986. we can't

  987. see you

  988. moving.

  989. oh Lord,

  990. thank you

  991. that you

  992. treasure

  993. every

  994. prayer of

  995. ours.

  996. Give us

  997. the grace

  998. to persevere

  999. in prayer

  1000. and to

  1001. live by

  1002. faith

  1003. in your

  1004. promise

  1005. just like

  1006. Habakkuk

  1007. did.

  1008. we pray

  1009. all of

  1010. these

  1011. things

  1012. for

  1013. your

  1014. glory

  1015. and for

  1016. our

  1017. good.

  1018. Amen.

  1019. Amen.

  1020. We're going

  1021. to sing a

  1022. song now.
