  1. Nice to see you again today. Let's turn in our Bibles, please, to John's Gospel, Chapter 2.

  2. Thanks to Ralph for leading and the musicians. It's good to sing.

  3. As we've started this term, we've been making our way through John's Gospel.

  4. And today we're going to look at two events, two accounts in Chapter 2.

  5. We're going to read it, then we're going to pray, and then we're going to listen and hear what God has to say.

  6. So we're going to read John Chapter 2, verses 1 to 22.

    John 2:1–22

  7. On the third day, a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.

  8. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

  9. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him,

  10. They've no more wine.

  11. Woman, why do you involve me? Jesus replied.

  12. My hour has not yet come.

  13. His mother said to the servants,

  14. Do whatever he tells you.

  15. Nearby stood six stone water jars,

  16. the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,

  17. each holding from 80 to 120 litres.

  18. Jesus said to the servants,

  19. Fill the jars with water,

  20. so they may be filled to the brim.

  21. Then he told them,

  22. Now draw some out,

  23. and take it to the master of the banquet.

  24. They did so,

  25. and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.

  26. He did not realize where it had come from,

  27. though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

  28. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said,

  29. Everyone brings out the choice wine first,

  30. and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink.

  31. But you have saved the best till now.

  32. What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee

  33. was the first of the signs through which Jesus revealed his glory,

  34. and his disciples believed in him.

  35. After this,

  36. Jesus went down to Capernaum

  37. with his mother and brothers and his disciples.

  38. There they stayed for a few days.

  39. When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,

  40. Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  41. In the temple courts,

  42. he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,

  43. and others sitting at tables exchanging money.

  44. So Jesus made a whip out of cords

  45. and drove all from the temple courts,

  46. both sheep and cattle.

  47. He scattered the coins of the money changers

  48. and overturned their tables.

  49. To those who sold doves, he said,

  50. Get these out of here.

  51. Stop turning my father's house into a market.

  52. His disciples remembered

  53. that it is written,

  54. Zeal for your house will consume me.

  55. The Jews then responded to him,

  56. What sign can you give

  57. to prove your authority to do all this?

  58. Jesus answered them,

  59. Destroy this temple

  60. and I will raise it again in three days.

  61. Well, they replied,

  62. It has taken 46 years to build this temple

  63. and you're going to raise it in three days?

  64. But the temple Jesus had spoken of

  65. was his body.

  66. And after he was raised from the dead,

  67. his disciples recalled what he had said.

  68. Then they believed the scriptures

  69. and the words that Jesus had spoken.

  70. Well, let's keep our Bibles open there

  71. and we'll pray.

  72. Our Father God,

  73. help each one of us here today

  74. to see Jesus more clearly,

  75. to understand all he has come to do

  76. and that we would be ready

  77. to meet him.

  78. Amen.

  79. Signposts.

  80. We were thinking about this

  81. in our home groups during the week.

  82. Imagine,

  83. it's a beautiful,

  84. hot, sunny day,

  85. so you really do have to imagine.

  86. We're going off to Muckras House

  87. in Killarney for a picnic.

  88. And as you drive along,

  89. you see this huge,

  90. big brown sign.

  91. Muckras House,

  92. 350 metres,

  93. next right.

  94. In excitement of seeing the sign,

  95. you stop the car

  96. and underneath the sign,

  97. you get out your picnic rug

  98. and your sandwiches and your drinks

  99. and you sit down there

  100. at the busy road

  101. and you say,

  102. well, isn't this just great?

  103. No.

  104. Signs are not an end in themselves.

  105. Signs are significant

  106. because they point beyond themselves

  107. to something else.

  108. Well, in chapter 2 of John's Gospel,

  109. we have two sign stories.

  110. The first is a wedding.

  111. The second is at the temple.

  112. One is full of noisy people,

  113. happy and laughing.

  114. The other is full of noisy animals,

  115. pooing and mooing.

  116. At the wedding,

  117. Jesus provides for the people.

  118. And in the temple,

  119. Jesus drives out the people.

  120. On the one hand,

  121. we have a party Jesus

  122. and then we have an angry Jesus.

  123. But these aren't just stories

  124. for entertainment.

  125. These are signs telling us

  126. who Jesus is.

  127. Have a look at verse 11.

  128. What Jesus did here

  129. in Cana of Galilee

  130. was the first of the signs

  131. through which he revealed his glory

  132. and his disciples believed in him.

  133. Or down at verse 18,

  134. when Jesus was at the temple,

  135. the Jews responded to him,

  136. what sign can you show us

  137. to prove your authority to do this?

  138. And in verse 23,

  139. now while Jesus was in Jerusalem

  140. at the Passover festival,

  141. many people saw the signs

  142. he was performing

  143. and believed in his name.

  144. You see, the signs

  145. are not the destination.

  146. They point beyond themselves

  147. to something better,

  148. someone who is greater.

  149. So let's take these two sign stories

  150. in turn

  151. and see what they teach us

  152. about Jesus.

  153. The first story

  154. is the wedding.

  155. Are we ready

  156. for the wedding celebration?

  157. Are we ready

  158. for the wedding celebration?

  159. The story at one level

  160. is really quite simple.

  161. Jesus is at a wedding

  162. with friends,

  163. they run out of wine,

  164. and Jesus does a miracle.

  165. Now the message is not,

  166. if you come to Jesus,

  167. he's going to fill

  168. your wine cellar.

  169. No, through the sign

  170. of changing water

  171. into wine,

  172. Jesus is saying,

  173. come to me

  174. and I will clean you

  175. for the wedding celebration.

  176. Believe me,

  177. trust me,

  178. and I will clean you

  179. for the wedding celebration.

  180. Well, that's a big statement.

  181. Let's see how that's true.

  182. First, Jesus claims

  183. to be

  184. the bridegroom.

  185. The wedding is going very well.

  186. Everyone's having a great time,

  187. but then,

  188. disaster!

  189. Look at verse 3,

  190. the end of verse 3.

  191. There's no more wine.

  192. It's like us being invited

  193. to a wedding,

  194. and after the ceremony

  195. in the church,

  196. there's an announcement.

  197. Sorry, folks,

  198. the hotel has run out of food,

  199. and the bar is closed.

  200. But don't worry,

  201. there's plenty of water

  202. on the table.

  203. I mean,

  204. who wants to go

  205. to that kind of wedding?

  206. Well,

  207. there was only one person

  208. to blame,

  209. and that was

  210. the bridegroom.

  211. It's his responsibility

  212. at the wedding

  213. to provide the wine.

  214. His first job

  215. as a husband,

  216. make sure

  217. there's enough wine.

  218. Oh!

  219. Well, thankfully,

  220. he sorts it out.

  221. At least,

  222. that's what

  223. the master

  224. of the banquet

  225. thought.

  226. Look at the end

  227. of verse 9.

  228. The master

  229. of the banquet

  230. called the bridegroom

  231. aside

  232. and said,

  233. everyone brings out

  234. the choice wine

  235. first,

  236. and then the cheaper

  237. wine after the guests

  238. have had too much

  239. to drink.

  240. But you have saved

  241. the best till now.

  242. Well, of course,

  243. it was a case

  244. of mistaken identity.

  245. It wasn't the bridegroom

  246. at all who had

  247. provided the best

  248. wine.

  249. It had been

  250. Jesus.

  251. Now, can you see

  252. what's going on

  253. here at the wedding?

  254. In a way,

  255. Jesus has taken

  256. the place

  257. of the bridegroom

  258. at the wedding.

  259. Jesus does

  260. the job

  261. of the bridegroom.

  262. He takes

  263. his place.

  264. Jesus is saying,

  265. I am the true

  266. bridegroom.

  267. You see,

  268. through the Bible

  269. as we read

  270. the scriptures

  271. of the Old Testament,

  272. the image,

  273. the main

  274. big picture

  275. that describes

  276. God's relationship

  277. to his people

  278. is a

  279. marriage.

  280. God is the husband

  281. and the people

  282. are the bride.

  283. God is pictured

  284. as loving us,

  285. pursuing us,

  286. longing to be

  287. in relationship

  288. with us.

  289. He is the faithful,

  290. loyal,

  291. steadfast husband.

  292. And so at this

  293. wedding here

  294. in Cana,

  295. we have but a

  296. picture of God

  297. coming to us.

  298. Jesus is the

  299. bridegroom,

  300. pursuing us,

  301. loving us,

  302. so that we

  303. could be

  304. his bride.

  305. Well,

  306. if you are

  307. the bride

  308. of a wedding,

  309. you need to be

  310. ready,

  311. don't you?

  312. You need to be

  313. looking the best.

  314. You need to be

  315. clean.

  316. And that's

  317. what Jesus

  318. does.

  319. There's a

  320. cleansing

  321. that takes

  322. place.

  323. Did you notice

  324. at the wedding

  325. this odd,

  326. strange reference

  327. to the water

  328. jars?

  329. Look at

  330. verse 6.

  331. Nearby stood

  332. six stone

  333. water jars,

  334. so tall,

  335. about as tall

  336. as this,

  337. and they

  338. were used

  339. by the Jews

  340. for ceremonial

  341. washing,

  342. each holding

  343. from 80

  344. to 120

  345. litres

  346. of water.

  347. That's a lot

  348. of water.

  349. You see,

  350. under Jewish

  351. religious

  352. tradition,

  353. the problem

  354. was that

  355. you could

  356. become

  357. unclean.

  358. You could

  359. become unclean

  360. if you ate

  361. the wrong

  362. food,

  363. if you touched

  364. the wrong

  365. person,

  366. or if you

  367. wore the

  368. wrong clothes.

  369. There was

  370. all kinds

  371. of rules

  372. that if you

  373. touched or

  374. did,

  375. you would

  376. become

  377. unclean.

  378. And when

  379. you became

  380. ritually

  381. unclean,

  382. well,

  383. you had to

  384. go to

  385. these ceremonial

  386. jars,

  387. and you do

  388. your ritual

  389. washing,

  390. and you

  391. would be

  392. clean again.

  393. But what

  394. was meant

  395. to remind

  396. you for

  397. a need

  398. of a

  399. much deeper

  400. internal

  401. spiritual

  402. cleansing?

  403. Well,

  404. it just

  405. became an

  406. external

  407. physical

  408. cleansing.

  409. It just

  410. became an

  411. outward show,

  412. a pretense.

  413. Whereas

  414. Jesus comes

  415. along,

  416. and he

  417. says,

  418. I'm offering

  419. you a

  420. complete

  421. cleansing.

  422. You see,

  423. Jesus could

  424. have used

  425. any water

  426. from any

  427. trough,

  428. but he

  429. deliberately

  430. chose the

  431. ceremonial

  432. jars for

  433. washing,

  434. and he

  435. commands the

  436. servants to

  437. fill them

  438. to the

  439. brim,

  440. and he

  441. turns it

  442. into wine,

  443. because Jesus

  444. was replacing

  445. the old

  446. way with

  447. now a

  448. new way.

  449. Jesus

  450. was putting

  451. an end to

  452. the external

  453. show,

  454. and he

  455. was offering

  456. an internal

  457. cleansing of

  458. our sinful

  459. hearts.

  460. Jesus has

  461. come to

  462. make us

  463. clean.

  464. Later on

  465. in John's

  466. Gospel,

  467. we find

  468. Jesus with

  469. his disciples.

  470. Just have a

  471. look forward

  472. to John

    John 13 chapter mention

  473. chapter 13.

  474. John

    John 13 chapter mention

  475. chapter 13.

  476. Peter

  477. says,

  478. you may

  479. remember this

  480. account where

  481. Jesus begins

  482. to wash or

  483. clean his

  484. disciples'

  485. feet,

  486. and he

  487. begins to

  488. make his

  489. way around

  490. the

  491. disciples.

  492. We'll pick

  493. it up in

  494. verse 8,

  495. John

    John 13:8

  496. chapter 13,

  497. verse 8.

  498. And Jesus

  499. comes to

  500. Peter to

  501. wash his

  502. feet.

  503. And what

  504. does Peter

  505. say?

  506. No,

  507. you shall

  508. never wash

  509. my feet.

  510. And Jesus

  511. answered,

  512. unless I

  513. wash you,

  514. you have

  515. no part

  516. with me.

  517. Then,

  518. Lord,

  519. Simon Peter

  520. replied,

  521. not just

  522. my feet,

  523. but my

  524. hands and

  525. my head

  526. as well.

  527. Well,

  528. Jesus answered,

  529. those who

  530. have had

  531. a bath

  532. need only

  533. to wash

  534. their feet.

  535. Their whole

  536. body is

  537. clean.

  538. And you

  539. are clean.

  540. Though not

  541. every one

  542. of you,

  543. for he

  544. knew who

  545. was going

  546. to betray

  547. him,

  548. and that

  549. was why

  550. he said,

  551. not everyone

  552. was clean.

  553. Let's go

  554. back to

  555. John chapter

    John 2 chapter mention

  556. 2.

  557. Did you

  558. hear what

  559. Jesus said

  560. to Peter?

  561. Unless I

  562. wash you,

  563. unless I

  564. clean you,

  565. you can

  566. have no

  567. part of

  568. me.

  569. He wasn't

  570. talking about

  571. a physical

  572. bath or

  573. a shower

  574. with soap

  575. and shampoo.

  576. He was

  577. talking about

  578. a spiritual

  579. cleansing.

  580. And the

  581. only way

  582. that we

  583. can be

  584. clean

  585. inside

  586. is that

  587. Jesus

  588. would die

  589. on the

  590. cross for

  591. our sins.

  592. A

  593. cleansing

  594. so deep

  595. and full

  596. that it

  597. will clean

  598. us

  599. internally

  600. and

  601. completely

  602. and fully.

  603. No matter

  604. your guilt

  605. or your

  606. shame

  607. or your

  608. sin,

  609. Jesus

  610. says,

  611. I am

  612. the one

  613. who has

  614. come to

  615. clean you.

  616. I will

  617. make you

  618. pure

  619. and beautiful

  620. like a

  621. bride ready

  622. for the

  623. bridegroom.

  624. so Jesus

  625. does the

  626. cleansing

  627. work.

  628. So,

  629. they are

  630. ready to

  631. celebrate.

  632. But why

  633. wine?

  634. Why is

  635. there so

  636. much

  637. reference

  638. to wine?

  639. Why change

  640. water into

  641. wine?

  642. Surely Jesus

  643. could have

  644. changed it

  645. into sparkling

  646. water.

  647. Probably been

  648. easier maybe.

  649. Or what

  650. about

  651. orange

  652. juice?

  653. Why did

  654. he change

  655. the water

  656. into wine?

  657. Well,

  658. wine itself

  659. was symbolic.

  660. Notice the

  661. wine that

  662. Jesus made

  663. at the end

  664. of verse

  665. 10.

  666. Everyone

  667. brings out

  668. the choice

  669. wine first

  670. and then the

  671. cheaper wine

  672. after the

  673. guests have

  674. had too

  675. much to

  676. drink.

  677. But you

  678. have saved

  679. the best

  680. till now.

  681. Not cheap

  682. old plonk,

  683. but well-aged,

  684. the finest

  685. and the

  686. best.

  687. You see,

  688. the wine

  689. was a

  690. picture of

  691. joy and

  692. happiness.

  693. The wine

  694. was provided

  695. at the

  696. wedding to

  697. celebrate

  698. and feast

  699. at the

  700. wedding.

  701. And this

  702. is the

  703. picture we

  704. see through

  705. the scriptures

  706. as God

  707. looks forward

  708. to a

  709. marriage

  710. to his

  711. people.

  712. You can

  713. follow with

  714. me on

  715. screen.

  716. In

  717. Isaiah 62,

  718. God speaks

  719. of his

  720. relationship

  721. to his

  722. people as

  723. a marriage.

  724. And this

  725. is what he

  726. says.

  727. No longer

  728. will they

  729. call you

  730. deserted

  731. or abandoned

  732. or forgotten,

  733. but you

  734. will be

  735. called

  736. Hevespa,

  737. which means

  738. my delight

  739. is in

  740. her.

  741. As a

  742. bridegroom

  743. rejoices over

  744. his bride,

  745. so will

  746. your God

  747. rejoice

  748. over you.

  749. It goes

  750. on.

  751. The Lord

  752. has sworn

  753. by his

  754. mighty arm,

  755. never again

  756. will foreigners

  757. drink the

  758. new wine

  759. for which

  760. you have

  761. toiled,

  762. but those

  763. who gather

  764. the grapes

  765. will drink

  766. it in the

  767. courts of

  768. my sanctuary.

  769. glory.

  770. What a

  771. wonderful,

  772. beautiful

  773. picture.

  774. On

  775. intimacy

  776. on the

  777. one hand

  778. and security

  779. on the

  780. other,

  781. a joyful

  782. celebration

  783. as God

  784. the bridegroom

  785. marries

  786. his bride

  787. the people.

  788. well,

  789. what God

  790. had promised

  791. to do,

  792. Jesus

  793. has turned

  794. that into

  795. a reality

  796. for us.

  797. You see,

  798. if we stop

  799. at the

  800. sign,

  801. we miss

  802. the point

  803. of what

  804. the story

  805. is all

  806. about.

  807. Jesus

  808. is saying,

  809. come to

  810. me,

  811. all of you,

  812. whoever you

  813. are,

  814. whatever your

  815. background,

  816. whatever your

  817. guilt or

  818. sin,

  819. come to

  820. me,

  821. and I

  822. will make

  823. you

  824. clean.

  825. I will

  826. wash you

  827. for the

  828. ultimate

  829. wedding

  830. celebration.

  831. So that's

  832. story one.

  833. Let's move

  834. now to

  835. story two.

  836. Removed

  837. from the

  838. father's

  839. house,

  840. the

  841. location

  842. changes

  843. from the

  844. wedding

  845. to the

  846. temple,

  847. the

  848. imagery

  849. and the

  850. symbolism

  851. also

  852. change.

  853. But at

  854. one level,

  855. this story

  856. is also

  857. very simple.

  858. We find

  859. Jesus at

  860. the temple,

  861. they've

  862. turned it

  863. into a

  864. marketplace,

  865. and so

  866. Jesus comes

  867. along and

  868. gets rid

  869. of all

  870. the

  871. sellers.

  872. Now,

  873. again,

  874. this is not

  875. a message

  876. that Jesus

  877. is on a

  878. crusade

  879. to free

  880. all the

  881. animals.

  882. No,

  883. through the

  884. act of

  885. clearing the

  886. courts,

  887. Jesus is

  888. saying,

  889. if you

  890. refuse me,

  891. I will

  892. remove you

  893. from my

  894. father's

  895. house.

  896. Refuse

  897. me,

  898. and I

  899. will remove

  900. you from

  901. my father's

  902. house.

  903. Well,

  904. let's see

  905. how this

  906. is true.

  907. First,

  908. Jesus makes

  909. the extraordinary

  910. claim of

  911. being the

  912. temple.

  913. temple.

  914. The

  915. temple,

  916. of course,

  917. was the

  918. place where

  919. you went

  920. to meet

  921. with God.

  922. You went

  923. there to

  924. pray to

  925. God,

  926. to thank

  927. God.

  928. It was

  929. the physical

  930. sign,

  931. center place

  932. in Jerusalem,

  933. the capital,

  934. where God's

  935. presence was

  936. among the

  937. people.

  938. So,

  939. if there

  940. was no

  941. temple,

  942. there was

  943. no access

  944. to God.

  945. Get rid

  946. of the

  947. temple,

  948. no way

  949. of meeting

  950. God.

  951. now,

  952. when Jesus

  953. arrived to

  954. the temple,

  955. he says

  956. something

  957. extraordinary.

  958. Do you

  959. see it in

  960. verse 16?

  961. He calls

  962. it,

  963. my

  964. father's

  965. house.

  966. Jesus is

  967. claiming an

  968. ownership and

  969. an authority

  970. over the

  971. temple.

  972. In fact,

  973. Jesus goes

  974. even further,

  975. verse 19.

  976. He says

  977. to them,

  978. destroy

  979. this

  980. temple,

  981. and I

  982. will raise

  983. it again

  984. in three

  985. days.

  986. Huh?

  987. Could you

  988. imagine the

  989. reaction?

  990. Well,

  991. we have it

  992. in verse 20.

  993. It's taken

  994. 46 years

  995. to build

  996. this temple

  997. and you

  998. are going

  999. to raise

  1000. it in

  1001. three days?

  1002. How are

  1003. you possibly,

  1004. how could

  1005. you rebuild

  1006. a temple

  1007. if it was

  1008. all flattened?

  1009. It's

  1010. nonsense

  1011. talk.

  1012. You're

  1013. talking

  1014. stupid.

  1015. And

  1016. besides,

  1017. how will

  1018. we ever

  1019. get close

  1020. to God

  1021. without a

  1022. temple?

  1023. Verse 21.

  1024. But the

  1025. temple Jesus

  1026. was speaking

  1027. about

  1028. was his

  1029. body.

  1030. You see,

  1031. Jesus was

  1032. making this

  1033. extraordinary

  1034. claim.

  1035. He's saying,

  1036. see that

  1037. building over

  1038. there?

  1039. Look at

  1040. me.

  1041. I am

  1042. the true

  1043. temple.

  1044. I am

  1045. the one

  1046. who will

  1047. give you

  1048. access

  1049. to the

  1050. Father.

  1051. Come to

  1052. me and

  1053. you will

  1054. experience

  1055. God's

  1056. presence

  1057. personally

  1058. and

  1059. intimately.

  1060. Well,

  1061. they'd all

  1062. missed the

  1063. point

  1064. completely,

  1065. hadn't

  1066. they?

  1067. It would

  1068. take a

  1069. lot longer

  1070. before they

  1071. realized what

  1072. Jesus was

  1073. coming to

  1074. do.

  1075. Verse 22.

  1076. after Jesus

  1077. was raised

  1078. from the

  1079. dead,

  1080. so he

  1081. died three

  1082. days later,

  1083. he was

  1084. raised from

  1085. the dead,

  1086. his disciples

  1087. recalled,

  1088. they remembered

  1089. back to the

  1090. event in the

  1091. temple,

  1092. they believed

  1093. the scriptures

  1094. and the

  1095. words that

  1096. Jesus had

  1097. spoken.

  1098. It suddenly

  1099. dawned on

  1100. them that

  1101. yes,

  1102. it is through

  1103. Jesus,

  1104. through his

  1105. death and

  1106. through his

  1107. resurrection,

  1108. that we

  1109. could have

  1110. access to

  1111. God.

  1112. Now,

  1113. that meant

  1114. that anything

  1115. that hindered

  1116. access to

  1117. God needed

  1118. to be

  1119. removed.

  1120. A

  1121. cleansing

  1122. had to

  1123. take place.

  1124. And that's

  1125. what Jesus

  1126. was demonstrating

  1127. earlier on

  1128. when he

  1129. arrived at

  1130. the temple.

  1131. A

  1132. cleansing

  1133. was taking

  1134. place.

  1135. Look at

  1136. when these

  1137. events took

  1138. place.

  1139. Verse 13.

  1140. When it

  1141. was almost

  1142. time for

  1143. the Jewish

  1144. Passover,

  1145. Jesus went

  1146. up to

  1147. Jerusalem.

  1148. Now,

  1149. Passover was

  1150. this great

  1151. big annual

  1152. event when

  1153. they remembered

  1154. their liberation,

  1155. God setting

  1156. his people

  1157. free from

  1158. Egypt hundreds

  1159. of years

  1160. before.

  1161. And so

  1162. this one

  1163. time every

  1164. year,

  1165. hundreds,

  1166. thousands

  1167. of people

  1168. all left

  1169. and went

  1170. on a big

  1171. pilgrimage

  1172. and all

  1173. travelled up

  1174. to Jerusalem.

  1175. It was like

  1176. all-Ireland

  1177. final day

  1178. in Croke

  1179. Park

  1180. when every

  1181. county

  1182. was in

  1183. the final.

  1184. I mean,

  1185. everybody

  1186. went.

  1187. They came

  1188. to meet

  1189. with God.

  1190. people

  1191. were

  1192. coming

  1193. from all

  1194. barriers

  1195. and

  1196. obstacles.

  1197. People

  1198. were

  1199. coming

  1200. from all

  1201. kinds

  1202. of

  1203. places

  1204. and

  1205. were

  1206. pulling

  1207. out

  1208. their

  1209. wallet

  1210. ready

  1211. to pay

  1212. money

  1213. for some

  1214. animal

  1215. for a

  1216. sacrifice.

  1217. Oh,

  1218. well,

  1219. you've

  1220. got the

  1221. wrong

  1222. currency.

  1223. Let me

  1224. exchange

  1225. it and

  1226. well,

  1227. I'll

  1228. just

  1229. take a

  1230. bit

  1231. for

  1232. myself.

  1233. And

  1234. then

  1235. they

  1236. were

  1237. haggling

  1238. over

  1239. the

  1240. price

  1241. of a

  1242. cow.

  1243. How

  1244. much

  1245. is

  1246. that

  1247. sheep?

  1248. No,

  1249. too much.

  1250. What

  1251. about

  1252. the

  1253. dove?

  1254. Maybe

  1255. that's

  1256. cheaper.

  1257. You see,

  1258. those who

  1259. were selling

  1260. animals and

  1261. exchanging

  1262. currency

  1263. had turned

  1264. the temple

  1265. into a

  1266. place of

  1267. making

  1268. money

  1269. rather than

  1270. meeting

  1271. God.

  1272. Rather

  1273. than a

  1274. place to

  1275. worship

  1276. God,

  1277. it had

  1278. become a

  1279. place to

  1280. increase

  1281. your wealth.

  1282. And

  1283. Jesus

  1284. was

  1285. angry,

  1286. verse

  1287. 15,

  1288. so he

  1289. made a

  1290. whip out

  1291. of

  1292. cords,

  1293. drove

  1294. all from

  1295. the

  1296. temple

  1297. courts,

  1298. both

  1299. sheep

  1300. and

  1301. cattle,

  1302. and he

  1303. scattered

  1304. the coins

  1305. of the

  1306. money

  1307. changers

  1308. and overturned

  1309. their

  1310. tables.

  1311. Have

  1312. you ever

  1313. known

  1314. Jesus

  1315. to be

  1316. angry?

  1317. Well,

  1318. let's

  1319. not mistake

  1320. things here.

  1321. Jesus

  1322. hasn't

  1323. lost his

  1324. temper.

  1325. No,

  1326. it was

  1327. a

  1328. righteous

  1329. anger.

  1330. Jesus

  1331. was

  1332. passionate

  1333. for his

  1334. father's

  1335. glory.

  1336. Verse

  1337. 16,

  1338. to those

  1339. who were

  1340. selling,

  1341. he said,

  1342. get them

  1343. out of

  1344. here.

  1345. Stop

  1346. turning my

  1347. father's

  1348. house

  1349. into a

  1350. market.

  1351. You see,

  1352. Jesus

  1353. longed

  1354. that people

  1355. would be

  1356. able to

  1357. come and

  1358. give honour

  1359. and praise

  1360. and worship

  1361. to the

  1362. father,

  1363. for that

  1364. is why

  1365. God

  1366. had made

  1367. us.

  1368. It's the

  1369. purpose in

  1370. which God

  1371. had created

  1372. us,

  1373. that we

  1374. would

  1375. live for

  1376. him,

  1377. that we

  1378. would

  1379. worship

  1380. him.

  1381. So

  1382. anyone

  1383. that

  1384. obstructed

  1385. access to

  1386. God

  1387. was to

  1388. be

  1389. removed.

  1390. It

  1391. was an

  1392. act of

  1393. cleansing.

  1394. Jesus

  1395. cleaned it

  1396. all up

  1397. by clearing

  1398. people out.

  1399. You see,

  1400. it comes as

  1401. a warning

  1402. to us

  1403. that if

  1404. we put

  1405. obstacles in

  1406. the way

  1407. of people

  1408. coming to

  1409. God,

  1410. if we

  1411. put up

  1412. barriers

  1413. to stop

  1414. access to

  1415. the

  1416. father,

  1417. if we

  1418. become

  1419. those

  1420. who

  1421. obstruct

  1422. the way,

  1423. well,

  1424. there will

  1425. be a

  1426. cleansing,

  1427. a clearing

  1428. out of

  1429. all who

  1430. are opposed

  1431. to him.

  1432. You see,

  1433. this was a

  1434. cleansing that

  1435. God had

  1436. always been

  1437. concerned

  1438. for.

  1439. There was

  1440. a cleansing

  1441. which led

  1442. to a

  1443. removal

  1444. in

  1445. judgment.

  1446. Years

  1447. before,

  1448. the prophet

  1449. Jeremiah had

  1450. confronted

  1451. God's people

  1452. about the

  1453. way they

  1454. were behaving

  1455. and living.

  1456. And God

  1457. said to

  1458. Jeremiah,

  1459. you can

  1460. read it

  1461. there on

  1462. the screen,

  1463. God said

  1464. to Jeremiah,

  1465. stand at

  1466. the gate

  1467. of the

  1468. Lord's

  1469. house,

  1470. stand at

  1471. the entrance

  1472. to the

  1473. temple and

  1474. say to

  1475. the people,

  1476. reform your

  1477. ways and

  1478. your actions

  1479. and I

  1480. will let

  1481. you live.

  1482. You see,

  1483. they were

  1484. turning up

  1485. and doing

  1486. all the

  1487. worshipy

  1488. religious

  1489. stuff and

  1490. that was

  1491. fine.

  1492. The rest

  1493. of the

  1494. time they

  1495. were carrying

  1496. on and

  1497. doing whatever

  1498. they pleased.

  1499. God says,

  1500. no, you've

  1501. got to

  1502. reform your

  1503. ways.

  1504. But you

  1505. did not

  1506. listen.

  1507. I called

  1508. but you

  1509. didn't

  1510. answer.

  1511. I will

  1512. now do

  1513. to the

  1514. house that

  1515. bears my

  1516. name, the

  1517. temple you

  1518. trust in, I

  1519. will thrust

  1520. you from my

  1521. presence.

  1522. Well, God's

  1523. word was

  1524. clear, wasn't

  1525. it?

  1526. God says,

  1527. I am going

  1528. to remove

  1529. you.

  1530. I am going

  1531. to cleanse

  1532. my house

  1533. from all

  1534. who do

  1535. not repent

  1536. and all

  1537. who do

  1538. not listen

  1539. to me.

  1540. And so

  1541. when Jesus

  1542. arrived at

  1543. the temple

  1544. to his

  1545. father's

  1546. house, he

  1547. cleansed

  1548. it.

  1549. He enacted

  1550. God's

  1551. judgment upon

  1552. the people.

  1553. Well, you

  1554. say, that

  1555. sounds a bit

  1556. harsh.

  1557. Jesus being

  1558. so angry,

  1559. removing

  1560. people.

  1561. Well,

  1562. remember,

  1563. Jesus wants

  1564. a people

  1565. who will

  1566. worship

  1567. God,

  1568. who will

  1569. live for

  1570. him and

  1571. serve him.

  1572. And all

  1573. who oppose

  1574. him and

  1575. all who

  1576. reject him

  1577. will be

  1578. removed.

  1579. And Jesus

  1580. is making

  1581. this very

  1582. simple

  1583. statement that

  1584. if we

  1585. turn against

  1586. him, he

  1587. will remove

  1588. us.

  1589. We will be

  1590. removed from

  1591. his presence

  1592. forever.

  1593. forever.

  1594. You see, if

  1595. we look at

  1596. this story

  1597. as all

  1598. about Jesus

  1599. freeing

  1600. animals,

  1601. well, we've

  1602. missed the

  1603. point completely.

  1604. Jesus

  1605. says,

  1606. refuse me,

  1607. ignore me,

  1608. turn against

  1609. me,

  1610. and I

  1611. will remove

  1612. you from

  1613. my father's

  1614. house.

  1615. so two

  1616. signed

  1617. stories

  1618. pointing us

  1619. to Jesus.

  1620. At the

  1621. wedding, we

  1622. see the

  1623. welcome of

  1624. the bridegroom.

  1625. Come to

  1626. me, says

  1627. Jesus, and

  1628. I will

  1629. clean you

  1630. of all

  1631. your sin.

  1632. No longer

  1633. do you have

  1634. to put on

  1635. a pretense

  1636. or put on

  1637. a show.

  1638. You can

  1639. come as

  1640. you are.

  1641. I will

  1642. forgive you.

  1643. I will

  1644. give you

  1645. my purity.

  1646. I will

  1647. give you

  1648. my

  1649. righteousness.

  1650. I will

  1651. make you

  1652. as a

  1653. beautiful

  1654. bride.

  1655. And I

  1656. will be

  1657. your loyal,

  1658. faithful,

  1659. and steadfast

  1660. husband.

  1661. And as

  1662. we come

  1663. to Jesus,

  1664. so in a

  1665. sense we

  1666. enter into

  1667. a marriage

  1668. relationship

  1669. with God

  1670. that is

  1671. safe and

  1672. secure and

  1673. will never

  1674. be broken.

  1675. A wedding

  1676. feast where

  1677. we will eat

  1678. and drink

  1679. and be

  1680. happy and

  1681. be glad

  1682. and there

  1683. will be

  1684. no more

  1685. death.

  1686. It will

  1687. last forever.

  1688. But at

  1689. the temple

  1690. we see the

  1691. warning of

  1692. a judge.

  1693. And Jesus

  1694. is saying,

  1695. I am the

  1696. way to the

  1697. Father.

  1698. And I have

  1699. come that you

  1700. may have

  1701. access to

  1702. him.

  1703. But if you

  1704. hinder the

  1705. way, if we

  1706. do not

  1707. reform our

  1708. ways and

  1709. turn

  1710. back to

  1711. him,

  1712. Jesus

  1713. says,

  1714. well there

  1715. will come

  1716. a day

  1717. when I

  1718. will come

  1719. again.

  1720. And it

  1721. will be

  1722. in judgment.

  1723. And I

  1724. will cleanse

  1725. this place

  1726. from all

  1727. who do

  1728. not trust

  1729. me.

  1730. Which

  1731. Jesus

  1732. are we

  1733. going to

  1734. meet?

  1735. The party

  1736. Jesus?

  1737. The welcome

  1738. of the

  1739. bridegroom?

  1740. The

  1741. bridegroom?

  1742. The

  1743. bridegroom?

  1744. Or the

  1745. righteous

  1746. angered

  1747. Jesus?

  1748. Who will

  1749. remove us

  1750. from his

  1751. presence

  1752. because we

  1753. have ignored

  1754. him?

  1755. Two signs,

  1756. two stories.

  1757. What

  1758. Jesus

  1759. are we

  1760. ready to

  1761. meet?

  1762. Let's

  1763. pray.

  1764. Father God,

  1765. thank you

  1766. for your

  1767. word.

  1768. thank you

  1769. for its

  1770. simplicity,

  1771. its

  1772. clarity.

  1773. Thank you

  1774. that it

  1775. points us

  1776. to Jesus.

  1777. And

  1778. Father,

  1779. we pray

  1780. that each

  1781. one of us

  1782. here would

  1783. turn to

  1784. you,

  1785. that we

  1786. would come

  1787. to you for

  1788. that cleansing,

  1789. that we

  1790. would know

  1791. life with

  1792. you,

  1793. a relationship

  1794. with you

  1795. forever and

  1796. ever.

  1797. feasting

  1798. and joy

  1799. forevermore.

  1800. Father,

  1801. we pray

  1802. that we

  1803. would always

  1804. be those

  1805. who are

  1806. continually

  1807. changing

  1808. our ways,

  1809. confessing

  1810. our sin,

  1811. and seeking

  1812. to live a

  1813. life that

  1814. pleases

  1815. you.

  1816. Father,

  1817. help us,

  1818. help us

  1819. to trust

  1820. Jesus,

  1821. and help

  1822. us to walk

  1823. in his

  1824. way.

  1825. And it's

  1826. in his

  1827. name we

  1828. pray.

  1829. Amen.

  1830. We're

  1831. going to

  1832. sing

  1833. together.

  1834. What is

  1835. our hope

  1836. in life

  1837. and death?

  1838. Christ

  1839. alone,

  1840. Christ

  1841. alone.

  1842. He is

  1843. our only

  1844. hope.

  1845. He is

  1846. the one

  1847. who welcomes

  1848. us today.

  1849. Let's

  1850. stand to

  1851. sing,

  1852. if you're

  1853. able to.

  1854. Amen.

  1855. Amen.

  1856. Amen.

  1857. Amen.

  1858. Amen.

  1859. Amen.
