  1. We continue in our studies of John's Gospel, and Sam is going to be preaching this morning,

  2. but before he does, we're going to read the section of Scripture that we're going to be

  3. looking at, which is John chapter 3, starting at verse 1 through to verse 21.

    John 3 chapter mention

  4. John's Gospel, chapter 3, and we'll start at verse 1.

  5. Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus, who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.

  6. He came to Jesus at night and said, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God,

  7. for no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.

  8. Jesus replied, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.

  9. How can someone be born when they are old? Nicodemus asked.

  10. Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born.

  11. Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.

  12. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to Spirit.

  13. You shouldn't be surprised at my saying, You must be born again.

  14. The wind blows wherever it pleases.

  15. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.

  16. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.

  17. How can this be? Nicodemus asked.

  18. You are Israel's teacher, said Jesus, and do you not understand these things?

  19. Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know.

  20. We testify to what we have seen.

  21. But still you people do not accept our testimony.

  22. I have spoken to you of earthly things, and you do not believe.

  23. How then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?

  24. No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven, the Son of Man.

  25. And just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,

  26. so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

  27. that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.

  28. For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son,

  29. that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

  30. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,

  31. but to save the world through him.

  32. Whoever believes in him is not condemned.

  33. But whoever does not believe stands condemned already,

  34. because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

  35. This is the verdict.

  36. Light has come into the world,

  37. but people love darkness instead of light,

  38. because their deeds were evil.

  39. Everyone who does evil hates the light,

  40. and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

  41. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light,

  42. so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done

  43. has been done in the sight of God.

  44. Thank you.

  45. Thank you.

  46. Thank you.

  47. Thank you, Johnny.

  48. Good morning, everybody.

  49. Good morning.

  50. Let's begin by praying and asking God for his help.

  51. Our Father, we thank you for giving us your word this day.

  52. We thank you for the life that is in us.

  53. Holy Spirit, help us to see wonderful things in your word this day.

  54. Amen.

  55. Who will enter God's eternal life?

  56. That's the question that Jesus answers in today's text.

  57. And this is the most important question that we could ever ask.

  58. There is more writing on this question than on any other.

  59. Who will enter God's eternal life?

  60. For some of us, this is a question that we find really hard to think about.

  61. The gravity of this subject is just too much to face,

  62. so we just push it away.

  63. In essence, we're scared to hear what Jesus has to say about this.

  64. Then for others of us, we think we know the right answer,

  65. and we're pretty smug about it.

  66. But in reality, we're dead wrong, and Jesus knows it.

  67. That description matches Nicodemus, the man that Jesus meets in today's text.

  68. Everything that Nicodemus believed about who would enter God's eternal kingdom

  69. got thrown upside down by Jesus.

  70. Now, if you look in verse 1, John, the writer of this gospel,

  71. tells us that Nicodemus is a member of the Jewish ruling council.

  72. So this is a man with power and influence in his community.

  73. But we also learn that he's a Pharisee.

  74. These were very religious Jews who strove to keep God's laws,

  75. although unfortunately, they believed that they had earned entrance

  76. into God's eternal kingdom because they kept the rules

  77. much better than the others around them.

  78. And Jesus warns people throughout Israel at this time.

  79. He's warning them not to listen to this teaching of the Pharisees,

  80. which in turn led the Pharisees to hate him and see to his death in the end.

  81. So this probably explains why, in verse 1,

  82. when does Nicodemus come to Jesus?

  83. At night.

  84. Nicodemus, he risks his reputation

  85. by seeking out this conversation with Jesus.

  86. So why does he come?

  87. What has brought him here?

  88. Well, look what he says in verse 2.

  89. Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God,

  90. for no one could perform the signs that you are doing if God were not with him.

  91. Now, while he's making a statement there,

  92. it's also like he's trying to draw Jesus out a bit, isn't it?

  93. It's kind of like, I know you're important, Jesus, but why are you so important?

  94. Why are you doing what you are doing?

  95. But Jesus knows what's really going on in Nicodemus' heart.

  96. In fact, the last verse of chapter 2,

  97. it says that Jesus did not need any testimony about mankind,

  98. for he knew what was in each person.

  99. Jesus knows what Nicodemus is really thinking.

  100. He diverts the conversation completely,

  101. and this is his shocking reply to Nicodemus in verse 3.

  102. Very truly I tell you,

  103. no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.

  104. Jesus dives straight into the heart problem that he sees in Nicodemus,

  105. and this is a problem that we all share.

  106. The problem is that we inherently think

  107. that we can earn our way into God's kingdom

  108. by something that we do for him.

  109. God's kingdom is where God is ruling

  110. and reigning over the hearts

  111. of those who want him to be their king.

  112. It's another way to describe heaven

  113. or eternal life with God.

  114. And Nicodemus, he thinks he's in.

  115. He thinks he's got God's eternal life in the bag

  116. because he's a good person.

  117. He tries to keep God's rules.

  118. He's a Bible expert.

  119. He prays multiple times a day.

  120. He gives money to church.

  121. I mean, what more could God possibly ask?

  122. But in the course of this conversation,

  123. Jesus shatters all of our assumptions

  124. about who will enter God's eternal life.

  125. Jesus confronts this toughest question

  126. and gives us his answer, the truth.

  127. And are we ready to hear it?

  128. Because it's not those who do enough good for God

  129. who will enter into his eternal life.

  130. No, in this text, we find that it's whoever is born again

  131. of his spirit.

  132. It's whoever simply believes in Jesus.

  133. And it's whoever daily walks in his light.

  134. Firstly, whoever is born again of the spirit.

  135. Now, you notice in verse 4, Nicodemus is shocked

  136. whenever Jesus tells him he must be born again.

  137. And we're also confused because we don't have any categories

  138. to understand how one could be physically reborn

  139. when they are old.

  140. But Jesus isn't talking about anything physical here, is he?

  141. And in verse 5, he clarifies, he develops his thoughts.

  142. Read with me in verse 5.

  143. Very truly, I tell you,

  144. no one can enter the kingdom of God

  145. unless they are born of water and the spirit.

  146. Flesh gives birth to flesh,

  147. but the spirit gives birth to spirit.

  148. You should not be surprised at my saying,

  149. you must be born again.

  150. Jesus is saying that you don't get to share

  151. in his eternal kingdom by the good things that you do.

  152. Not by living an outwardly religious lifestyle.

  153. Not by trying to be a really good person

  154. to those in your community.

  155. No.

  156. You need a totally new spiritual life.

  157. You need to be born again of water and spirit.

  158. Now, what does that mean?

  159. What does it mean when he says born of water and spirit?

  160. Well, we need to understand a prophecy

  161. from the book of Ezekiel 600 years before Jesus came.

  162. And in this prophecy,

  163. God speaks of a time to come

  164. when he would intervene

  165. in the lives of sinful, stubborn-hearted people,

  166. like you and me,

  167. to enable us to follow him.

  168. So, as we read this,

  169. I want you to listen out

  170. for references to water and spirit.

  171. You can follow on the screen.

  172. First part.

  173. God says,

  174. I will sprinkle clean water on you.

  175. And you will be clean.

  176. I will cleanse you from all your impurities

  177. and from all your idols.

  178. So, that's what it means

  179. to be born again of water.

  180. It's God cleansing us from our sin

  181. and all the other things

  182. that we look to for life

  183. instead of God.

  184. And here's the second part.

  185. God says,

  186. I will give you a new heart

  187. and put a new spirit in you.

  188. I will remove from you

  189. your heart of stone

  190. and give you a heart of flesh.

  191. And I will put my spirit in you

  192. and move you

  193. to follow my decrees

  194. and be careful to keep my laws.

  195. That's what it means

  196. to be born again of the spirit.

  197. It's God giving us a new heart,

  198. a transformed heart,

  199. and a new spirit

  200. that actually wants to love him

  201. and obey him.

  202. This is a completely new

  203. spiritual life

  204. with new desires

  205. and affections for God

  206. that we never had before.

  207. And Jesus is saying to us all today,

  208. you must be born again

  209. or you will not enter

  210. my eternal kingdom.

  211. If you don't get this new spiritual life,

  212. you'll never see me

  213. as what you most desperately need.

  214. You'll never want to trust me as God.

  215. But here's the question.

  216. How do you get this new spiritual life?

  217. How do you get born again?

  218. We all want this,

  219. but how do we get it?

  220. Is there a special prayer

  221. that you can pray?

  222. Is there a book

  223. that you can read?

  224. Jesus

  225. tells us

  226. to our shock

  227. that we have

  228. nothing

  229. to do with it

  230. whatsoever.

  231. And that grates on us.

  232. Because in our pride,

  233. we want to have

  234. something to do with it.

  235. Look at what it says

  236. in verse 6.

  237. Flesh

  238. gives birth

  239. to flesh,

  240. but the spirit

  241. gives birth

  242. to spirit.

  243. Now think about this.

  244. You didn't ask your parents

  245. to give you physical life.

  246. You did not initiate

  247. that process

  248. and the physical life

  249. that you and I

  250. have here today.

  251. That's a gift

  252. that we received from them.

  253. We had nothing to do

  254. with getting that gift.

  255. And so it is

  256. with our spiritual life.

  257. We cannot initiate

  258. our own spiritual rebirth.

  259. We cannot give ourselves

  260. a new heart

  261. that wants God.

  262. We simply

  263. receive

  264. this new life

  265. as a gift

  266. from the spirit.

  267. Look at what it says

  268. in verse 8.

  269. The wind blows

  270. wherever it pleases.

  271. You hear its sound,

  272. but you cannot tell

  273. where it comes from

  274. or where it is going.

  275. So it is

  276. with everyone

  277. born

  278. of the spirit.

  279. Jesus is telling us

  280. something really clear.

  281. God gives

  282. the gift

  283. of spiritual life

  284. to whomever

  285. he chooses.

  286. And just like

  287. we cannot

  288. control

  289. or predict

  290. the direction

  291. of the wind,

  292. so also

  293. we don't control

  294. or predict

  295. who God

  296. is going to give

  297. the gift

  298. of spiritual life to.

  299. If we have been

  300. born again,

  301. it's only because

  302. we have been

  303. born again

  304. of the spirit.

  305. And two effects

  306. I think that that has

  307. on us

  308. day to day.

  309. Number one,

  310. it should humble us

  311. in amazed

  312. gratitude

  313. when we realize

  314. that if it were

  315. left up to us,

  316. we never would

  317. have chosen God.

  318. Unless

  319. the spirit

  320. had intervened.

  321. That's the first

  322. thing.

  323. Gratitude.

  324. Here's the second

  325. thing.

  326. What

  327. greater

  328. motivation

  329. do we need

  330. in our lives

  331. to pray?

  332. Think of

  333. the friends,

  334. the family

  335. that you have

  336. who don't

  337. yet

  338. understand

  339. or see

  340. that they

  341. need Jesus.

  342. What are we

  343. to do?

  344. we are to

  345. pray

  346. that God

  347. by his

  348. spirit

  349. would give

  350. them the

  351. gift

  352. of spiritual

  353. life because

  354. guess what?

  355. They cannot

  356. give it to

  357. themselves.

  358. This is our

  359. call

  360. to pray.

  361. so Jesus'

  362. first part

  363. in answering

  364. the question

  365. of who

  366. can enter

  367. God's

  368. eternal

  369. life is

  370. to say

  371. whoever is

  372. born again

  373. of the

  374. spirit.

  375. But some

  376. of you might

  377. be wondering

  378. at this

  379. point,

  380. how do I

  381. know if I

  382. have been

  383. born again?

  384. And it's

  385. right that you

  386. should ask

  387. that question

  388. given everything

  389. that's writing

  390. on this.

  391. But Jesus

  392. doesn't want

  393. us

  394. to spend

  395. our lives

  396. in anxious

  397. wondering.

  398. He tells

  399. us plainly

  400. in the next

  401. few verses

  402. how you

  403. can know

  404. if you

  405. have been

  406. born again

  407. and this

  408. is it.

  409. Those

  410. who are

  411. born again

  412. will

  413. believe

  414. in Jesus.

  415. That's how

  416. you know.

  417. If you've

  418. been given

  419. new spiritual

  420. life,

  421. you will

  422. believe

  423. that Jesus

  424. is God.

  425. You will

  426. believe

  427. that he

  428. died and

  429. rose again

  430. for you.

  431. You will

  432. believe that

  433. he is your

  434. king and

  435. he has

  436. rights to

  437. your

  438. complete

  439. devotion.

  440. That kind

  441. of belief,

  442. Jesus says,

  443. is only

  444. possible if

  445. you are

  446. born again

  447. into new

  448. spiritual life,

  449. if you are

  450. granted to

  451. believe it.

  452. And Jesus

  453. is clear

  454. that whoever

  455. believes in

  456. him will

  457. enter his

  458. eternal life.

  459. Let's now

  460. unpack what

  461. it means

  462. to believe

  463. in Jesus.

  464. I mean,

  465. anyone can

  466. say,

  467. oh yeah,

  468. I believe

  469. in Jesus.

  470. I believe

  471. he died.

  472. I believe

  473. he rose

  474. again.

  475. I believe

  476. he's God.

  477. The

  478. apostle James

  479. makes a good

  480. point in his

  481. letter later

  482. in the Bible.

  483. He says,

  484. even the

  485. demons

  486. believe.

  487. But they

  488. are obviously

  489. not in God's

  490. kingdom,

  491. are they?

  492. So what

  493. type of

  494. belief is

  495. Jesus getting

  496. at here?

  497. It couldn't

  498. be mere

  499. intellectual

  500. assent to

  501. some truth

  502. about God.

  503. Jesus

  504. says,

  505. believing

  506. means looking

  507. to Jesus

  508. in faith

  509. for forgiveness.

  510. That's the

  511. belief he's

  512. getting at

  513. here.

  514. And he

  515. explains this

  516. in verse

  517. 14 by

  518. referring to

  519. the

  520. Israelites.

  521. This

  522. happened

  523. when they

  524. were on

  525. their

  526. journey

  527. from

  528. slavery

  529. in Egypt

  530. to their

  531. home in

  532. the New

  533. Promised Land.

  534. And along

  535. the way,

  536. they grew

  537. bitter and

  538. disobedient

  539. towards God,

  540. even though he

  541. just rescued

  542. them from

  543. slavery.

  544. And in

  545. judgment,

  546. God sent

  547. snakes upon

  548. them.

  549. And the

  550. snakes bit

  551. the people.

  552. And what

  553. it did was

  554. it caused

  555. the people

  556. to realize

  557. their sin

  558. and to

  559. repent.

  560. And God,

  561. in his

  562. mercy,

  563. even though

  564. the people

  565. don't deserve

  566. it,

  567. in his

  568. mercy,

  569. he told

  570. Moses to

  571. put this

  572. bronze snake

  573. up on a

  574. pole and

  575. to raise

  576. it up in

  577. the middle

  578. of the

  579. camp.

  580. And anyone

  581. who looked

  582. at that

  583. snake was

  584. healed of

  585. their poisonous

  586. bites.

  587. And Jesus,

  588. he draws the

  589. analogy to

  590. himself.

  591. Read it in

  592. verse 14.

  593. Just as

  594. Moses lifted

  595. up the snake

  596. in the

  597. wilderness,

  598. so the

  599. Son of

  600. Man,

  601. that is

  602. Jesus,

  603. must be

  604. lifted up,

  605. that everyone

  606. who believes

  607. may have

  608. eternal

  609. life in

  610. him.

  611. The people

  612. in the

  613. desert

  614. looked up

  615. to the

  616. snake

  617. and were

  618. healed of

  619. the poisonous

  620. bites.

  621. We look

  622. up in

  623. faith to

  624. Jesus

  625. on the

  626. cross and

  627. we find

  628. forgiveness

  629. for our

  630. sin.

  631. We believe

  632. that he,

  633. the sinless

  634. Son of

  635. God,

  636. was the

  637. only

  638. one who

  639. ever

  640. qualified

  641. to take

  642. the just

  643. punishment

  644. we deserved

  645. for our

  646. rebellion.

  647. We believe

  648. that he

  649. took every

  650. sin,

  651. past,

  652. present,

  653. future,

  654. on himself.

  655. And John

  656. tells us

  657. the astonishing

  658. consequence

  659. of that

  660. belief.

  661. we are

  662. no longer

  663. condemned

  664. by God.

  665. We deserve

  666. to be

  667. condemned.

  668. Sin is

  669. our

  670. rebellion

  671. against

  672. God's

  673. loving

  674. rule

  675. over our

  676. lives.

  677. And God's

  678. just

  679. punishment

  680. for sin

  681. is to be

  682. separated

  683. from him

  684. forever.

  685. Rather than

  686. eternal life

  687. with God,

  688. we deserve

  689. condemnation

  690. to eternal

  691. death

  692. in hell.

  693. But listen

  694. to how

  695. John says

  696. it in

  697. verse 16.

  698. Some feel

  699. this is the

  700. key

  701. sentence in

  702. his whole

  703. gospel account,

  704. what he is

  705. trying to get

  706. across.

  707. Verse 16,

  708. for God

  709. so loved

  710. the world

  711. that he

  712. gave his

  713. one and

  714. only son

  715. that whoever

  716. believes in

  717. him

  718. shall not

  719. perish

  720. but have

  721. eternal

  722. life.

  723. If we

  724. believe in

  725. Jesus,

  726. we will

  727. not perish

  728. in hell

  729. for eternity.

  730. Instead,

  731. we will

  732. share in

  733. God's

  734. eternal

  735. life.

  736. That is

  737. not a

  738. maybe.

  739. It's not

  740. a hopefully.

  741. It's a

  742. certainty.

  743. And John

  744. continues in

  745. verse 17.

  746. Read it

  747. with me.

  748. For God

  749. did not

  750. send his

  751. son into

  752. the world

  753. to condemn

  754. the world

  755. but to

  756. save the

  757. world

  758. through him.

  759. Whoever

  760. believes

  761. in him

  762. is not

  763. condemned.

  764. but whoever

  765. does not

  766. believe

  767. stands

  768. condemned

  769. already

  770. because

  771. they have

  772. not

  773. believed

  774. in the

  775. name of

  776. God's

  777. one and

  778. only

  779. son.

  780. Jesus

  781. couldn't

  782. be any

  783. clearer.

  784. Before

  785. believing in

  786. Jesus,

  787. our record

  788. of sin

  789. was laid

  790. open

  791. before God

  792. and it

  793. condemned

  794. us.

  795. But Jesus

  796. took our

  797. sentence.

  798. He bore

  799. our hell

  800. and he

  801. rose from

  802. the grave

  803. so that

  804. you and I

  805. could share

  806. in his

  807. eternal

  808. life instead.

  809. Through

  810. believing in

  811. Jesus,

  812. all our

  813. sin,

  814. past,

  815. present,

  816. future,

  817. is paid

  818. for and

  819. can no

  820. longer be

  821. held

  822. against

  823. us.

  824. We are

  825. no

  826. longer

  827. condemned.

  828. But what

  829. if you

  830. believe in

  831. Jesus and

  832. you struggle

  833. with doubt?

  834. do you

  835. ever wonder

  836. in your

  837. times of

  838. doubt if

  839. you really

  840. still believe?

  841. Because let's

  842. face it,

  843. we all go

  844. through times

  845. of doubt

  846. in our

  847. lives.

  848. And maybe

  849. you're sitting

  850. here saying,

  851. yeah,

  852. I remember

  853. the time

  854. in my

  855. life when

  856. I first

  857. saw my

  858. need of

  859. Jesus.

  860. I

  861. remember

  862. that I

  863. believed

  864. in him.

  865. I

  866. looked to

  867. what he

  868. did in

  869. the cross

  870. and believed

  871. he did

  872. that for

  873. me.

  874. And I

  875. repented

  876. of my

  877. sin.

  878. And I

  879. knew

  880. his

  881. spirit's

  882. work

  883. in my

  884. life.

  885. But now

  886. I'm just

  887. plagued

  888. with doubt.

  889. I struggle

  890. to believe.

  891. It's the

  892. sin that

  893. I've

  894. struggled

  895. with.

  896. It's the

  897. suffering

  898. that I've

  899. been through

  900. in my

  901. life.

  902. And

  903. sometimes

  904. I just

  905. wonder,

  906. do I

  907. believe

  908. anymore?

  909. I doubt

  910. that Christ

  911. really has

  912. forgiven

  913. me.

  914. And if

  915. you have

  916. doubts

  917. just like

  918. that,

  919. you're not

  920. on your

  921. own.

  922. sin.

  923. But what

  924. would Jesus

  925. say about

  926. that?

  927. Well,

  928. listen to

  929. verse 16.

  930. Whoever

  931. believes

  932. will not

  933. perish,

  934. but will

  935. have eternal

  936. life.

  937. And verse

  938. 18,

  939. whoever

  940. believes

  941. is not

  942. condemned.

  943. These are

  944. statements of

  945. fact.

  946. they are

  947. not

  948. changed

  949. by our

  950. fluctuating

  951. feelings as

  952. we go

  953. through life.

  954. The moment

  955. that you

  956. placed your

  957. faith in

  958. Jesus,

  959. you were

  960. no longer

  961. condemned

  962. by God,

  963. and you

  964. will never

  965. be condemned

  966. by God

  967. again.

  968. The work

  969. is

  970. finished.

  971. finished.

  972. Your

  973. faith could

  974. be as

  975. tiny as

  976. a mustard

  977. seed.

  978. What

  979. matters is

  980. not the

  981. size of

  982. your faith,

  983. but who

  984. you have

  985. believed

  986. in.

  987. Jesus

  988. is great.

  989. Jesus

  990. is strong.

  991. And he

  992. promises

  993. to save

  994. the sinful,

  995. the doubting,

  996. and the

  997. weak.

  998. praise God.

  999. It is

  1000. not about

  1001. how strong

  1002. my faith

  1003. is.

  1004. It's about

  1005. how strong

  1006. my Savior

  1007. is.

  1008. So when

  1009. you doubt

  1010. if you're

  1011. still in

  1012. God's

  1013. kingdom,

  1014. ask yourself

  1015. this question.

  1016. am I

  1017. believing

  1018. my own

  1019. feelings?

  1020. Or am I

  1021. believing

  1022. what Jesus

  1023. has said

  1024. to be

  1025. true

  1026. about

  1027. me?

  1028. Rest

  1029. in what

  1030. he has

  1031. declared

  1032. about

  1033. you.

  1034. But here's

  1035. the other

  1036. implication of

  1037. this verse.

  1038. And this

  1039. is the

  1040. negative

  1041. one.

  1042. these verses

  1043. are clear

  1044. that if you

  1045. have not

  1046. believed

  1047. in Jesus,

  1048. then your

  1049. sin

  1050. condemns

  1051. you this

  1052. day before

  1053. God.

  1054. And you

  1055. have no

  1056. excuse.

  1057. You

  1058. will not

  1059. see eternal

  1060. life,

  1061. but you

  1062. will be

  1063. condemned

  1064. to eternal

  1065. death.

  1066. This is

  1067. no joke.

  1068. Do not

  1069. miss the

  1070. gravity

  1071. of these

  1072. words and

  1073. their

  1074. consequence

  1075. for

  1076. eternity.

  1077. This is

  1078. the most

  1079. serious

  1080. thing we

  1081. could ever

  1082. speak of.

  1083. Because there

  1084. is no

  1085. other way

  1086. to be

  1087. forgiven

  1088. and welcomed

  1089. into God's

  1090. eternal

  1091. kingdom than

  1092. through

  1093. Jesus.

  1094. Jesus.

  1095. So if

  1096. there is

  1097. anyone in

  1098. this room

  1099. who has

  1100. not yet

  1101. put your

  1102. trust in

  1103. Jesus,

  1104. maybe you've

  1105. heard about

  1106. him many

  1107. times before.

  1108. And you've

  1109. never really

  1110. put your

  1111. faith in

  1112. him.

  1113. You've been

  1114. on the

  1115. fence.

  1116. Maybe you

  1117. believe that

  1118. it's something

  1119. you can do

  1120. that will

  1121. make you

  1122. right before

  1123. God,

  1124. that will

  1125. make you

  1126. part of

  1127. his

  1128. kingdom.

  1129. Maybe

  1130. today for

  1131. the first

  1132. time,

  1133. you can

  1134. see Jesus

  1135. as the

  1136. only God

  1137. and Savior.

  1138. Today

  1139. is the

  1140. day to

  1141. put your

  1142. faith and

  1143. trust in

  1144. Jesus alone.

  1145. Don't

  1146. wait.

  1147. You don't

  1148. even know

  1149. if you

  1150. have tomorrow.

  1151. Say sorry

  1152. for your

  1153. sin.

  1154. trust in

  1155. what Jesus

  1156. did on

  1157. the cross

  1158. to forgive

  1159. you.

  1160. Thank him

  1161. for giving

  1162. you new

  1163. life.

  1164. And this

  1165. day you

  1166. will no

  1167. longer be

  1168. condemned.

  1169. You will

  1170. enter into

  1171. God's

  1172. eternal

  1173. life.

  1174. And this

  1175. leads us

  1176. very briefly

  1177. to the

  1178. last part

  1179. of the

  1180. answer to

  1181. the question

  1182. of who

  1183. will

  1184. enter

  1185. God's

  1186. eternal

  1187. life.

  1188. And it's

  1189. whoever walks

  1190. in the

  1191. light.

  1192. And what

  1193. does it

  1194. mean to

  1195. walk in

  1196. the light?

  1197. Well,

  1198. walking in

  1199. the light

  1200. is one of

  1201. the fruits

  1202. of being

  1203. a born

  1204. again

  1205. believer

  1206. in Jesus.

  1207. It shows

  1208. that you

  1209. are sharing

  1210. in God's

  1211. eternal

  1212. life.

  1213. So let's

  1214. think about

  1215. what that

  1216. actually means.

  1217. Read from

  1218. verse 19.

  1219. This is

  1220. the verdict.

  1221. Light has

  1222. come into

  1223. the world,

  1224. but people

  1225. loved

  1226. darkness

  1227. instead of

  1228. light because

  1229. their deeds

  1230. were evil.

  1231. Everyone

  1232. who does

  1233. evil hates

  1234. the light

  1235. and will

  1236. not come

  1237. into the

  1238. light for

  1239. fear that

  1240. their deeds

  1241. will be

  1242. exposed.

  1243. But whoever

  1244. lives by

  1245. the truth

  1246. comes

  1247. into

  1248. the light

  1249. so that

  1250. it may

  1251. be seen

  1252. plainly

  1253. that what

  1254. they have

  1255. done

  1256. has been

  1257. done

  1258. in the

  1259. sight

  1260. of God.

  1261. When we

  1262. walk in

  1263. darkness,

  1264. we don't

  1265. want our

  1266. sin to

  1267. be exposed.

  1268. We don't

  1269. want God

  1270. or others

  1271. to see it

  1272. because we

  1273. fear being

  1274. condemned.

  1275. That's our

  1276. spiritual condition

  1277. before being

  1278. born again.

  1279. Jesus,

  1280. he is the

  1281. light who

  1282. has come

  1283. into this

  1284. world.

  1285. That's what

  1286. he called

  1287. himself.

  1288. Walking in

  1289. the light

  1290. means that

  1291. you walk

  1292. each day

  1293. in him.

  1294. It's not

  1295. that we

  1296. don't sin

  1297. anymore.

  1298. No.

  1299. On the

  1300. contrary,

  1301. we willingly

  1302. bring our

  1303. sin into

  1304. the light

  1305. of Jesus.

  1306. We don't

  1307. have to

  1308. hide it

  1309. anymore.

  1310. it can

  1311. no longer

  1312. condemn us.

  1313. We can

  1314. freely

  1315. bring our

  1316. sin before

  1317. God in

  1318. daily repentance

  1319. knowing that

  1320. every sin is

  1321. paid for

  1322. and God

  1323. will

  1324. forgive us.

  1325. And here's

  1326. another benefit

  1327. of walking

  1328. in the light.

  1329. Rather than

  1330. hiding our

  1331. sin and not

  1332. dealing with

  1333. it,

  1334. when we

  1335. bring it

  1336. into the

  1337. light,

  1338. we access

  1339. the Spirit's

  1340. help to

  1341. fight against

  1342. it.

  1343. Those who

  1344. walk in

  1345. the light

  1346. become more

  1347. and more

  1348. like Jesus

  1349. because they

  1350. are daily

  1351. bringing their

  1352. sin to

  1353. him,

  1354. asking for

  1355. his forgiveness

  1356. and his

  1357. help.

  1358. So to those

  1359. of you who

  1360. are born

  1361. again believers,

  1362. practice walking

  1363. in the light.

  1364. You don't have to

  1365. hide anymore.

  1366. Bring your sin

  1367. before him

  1368. without fear.

  1369. And if you

  1370. are here and

  1371. you don't yet

  1372. believe in

  1373. Jesus,

  1374. hear his

  1375. words to you

  1376. today.

  1377. You don't have

  1378. to walk in

  1379. the darkness

  1380. of guilt,

  1381. shame,

  1382. and condemnation

  1383. anymore.

  1384. Jesus has

  1385. won your

  1386. freedom.

  1387. if you

  1388. would only

  1389. believe in

  1390. him,

  1391. come out

  1392. of the

  1393. darkness

  1394. and walk

  1395. in his

  1396. light.

  1397. To finish,

  1398. remember at the

  1399. start we said

  1400. that there's no

  1401. more important

  1402. question to

  1403. ask than who

  1404. will enter

  1405. God's eternal

  1406. life.

  1407. And Jesus

  1408. has answered

  1409. that for us

  1410. today.

  1411. But what

  1412. about Nicodemus?

  1413. It's almost

  1414. like John

  1415. drops him

  1416. off halfway

  1417. through the

  1418. passage.

  1419. We don't

  1420. get to hear

  1421. the rest of

  1422. the conversation.

  1423. John chose

  1424. not to

  1425. include that.

  1426. We don't

  1427. know how

  1428. it ended.

  1429. Do we

  1430. know if

  1431. Nicodemus

  1432. was born

  1433. again of

  1434. the Spirit?

  1435. Do we

  1436. know if

  1437. he did

  1438. go on to

  1439. believe in

  1440. Jesus and

  1441. walk in

  1442. the light?

  1443. Well, John

  1444. actually records

  1445. two more

  1446. instances in

  1447. the gospel

  1448. where Nicodemus

  1449. was present.

  1450. In chapter

  1451. seven, we

  1452. read that

  1453. Nicodemus

  1454. stood up for

  1455. Jesus in

  1456. the middle

  1457. of the

  1458. Jewish court,

  1459. the Sinedrine,

  1460. and defended

  1461. him before

  1462. his fellow

  1463. Pharisees.

  1464. And in

  1465. chapter 19,

  1466. get this,

  1467. once Jesus

  1468. has been

  1469. crucified,

  1470. two men

  1471. come to

  1472. take his

  1473. body down

  1474. from the

  1475. cross and

  1476. carry it to

  1477. the tomb

  1478. and prepare

  1479. it for

  1480. burial.

  1481. The first

  1482. man,

  1483. Joseph of

  1484. Arimathea,

  1485. the second

  1486. man,

  1487. Nicodemus,

  1488. the Pharisee.

  1489. I think

  1490. there's enough

  1491. evidence to

  1492. suggest that

  1493. he did

  1494. believe.

  1495. He came

  1496. to Jesus

  1497. thinking that

  1498. Jesus was

  1499. just another

  1500. teacher.

  1501. He left

  1502. with a new

  1503. heart to

  1504. believe in

  1505. Jesus as

  1506. God and

  1507. Savior.

  1508. He came

  1509. thinking he

  1510. could earn

  1511. his way into

  1512. God's kingdom.

  1513. him.

  1514. He left

  1515. having found

  1516. eternal life

  1517. through simple

  1518. faith in

  1519. Jesus.

  1520. He came

  1521. under the

  1522. blanket of

  1523. spiritual

  1524. darkness

  1525. and left

  1526. walking in

  1527. the light.

  1528. what's your

  1529. response to

  1530. this Jesus?

  1531. Are you

  1532. thankful for

  1533. the gift of

  1534. new spiritual

  1535. life when

  1536. you were born

  1537. again?

  1538. Are you

  1539. thankful that

  1540. you're no longer

  1541. condemned and

  1542. that you don't

  1543. need to walk

  1544. in the darkness

  1545. anymore?

  1546. Or maybe

  1547. your response

  1548. is to trust

  1549. in Jesus for

  1550. the first

  1551. time today.

  1552. whatever your

  1553. response is,

  1554. let's respond

  1555. to him now

  1556. in the

  1557. quietness

  1558. for just a

  1559. few moments.

  1560. Amen.

  1561. Amen.

  1562. Amen.

  1563. Amen.

  1564. Amen.

  1565. Amen.

  1566. Amen.

  1567. Amen.

  1568. Amen.

  1569. Amen.

  1570. Amen.

  1571. Amen.

  1572. Amen.

  1573. Amen.

  1574. Amen.

  1575. Amen.

  1576. Amen.

  1577. Father, we

  1578. thank you for

  1579. your love and

  1580. sending your

  1581. one and only

  1582. son.

  1583. Jesus, we

  1584. thank you for

  1585. taking our

  1586. sin and

  1587. bearing the

  1588. wrath of God

  1589. for us on

  1590. the cross.

  1591. Holy Spirit,

  1592. thank you for

  1593. giving us the

  1594. gift of

  1595. spiritual life

  1596. to see our

  1597. need of

  1598. Jesus.

  1599. We plead with

  1600. you to give

  1601. that gift to

  1602. those who

  1603. desperately need

  1604. it this day.

  1605. For your

  1606. glory and

  1607. their good,

  1608. we pray.

  1609. Amen.

  1610. We're going to

  1611. sing a song
