  1. Turn in our Bibles to John's Gospel.

  2. If you need a Bible and you haven't got one, it'll be helpful for you, so please feel free

  3. to get up out of your seat and get one.

  4. Sam is at the back there.

  5. Are there any notes left if anybody needs notes and a pen if you want to follow along?

  6. So John chapter 6, we're going to be reading from verse 25 down to verse 40.

    John 6 chapter mention

  7. I'll just give you a second to find it.

  8. John chapter 6, verses 25 to 40.

    John 6:25–40

  9. So let's hear God's word to us.

  10. When they, that's the crowd, found Jesus on the other side of the lake, they asked him,

  11. Rabbi or teacher, when did you get here?

  12. Jesus answered, very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the

  13. signs I performed, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.

  14. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the

  15. Son of Man will give you, for on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.

  16. Then they asked him, what must we do to do the works God requires?

  17. Jesus answered, the work of God is this, to believe in the one he has sent.

  18. So they asked him, what sign then will you give us that we may see it and believe you?

  19. What will you do?

  20. Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness.

  21. As it is written, he gave them bread from heaven to eat.

  22. Jesus said to them, very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven,

  23. but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven, for the bread of God and

  24. the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.

  25. Sir, they said, always give us this bread.

  26. Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life.

  27. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

  28. But as I told you, you have seen me, and still you do not believe.

  29. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me, I will never drive away.

  30. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will, but to do the will of him who sent me.

  31. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,

  32. but raise them up at the last day.

  33. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life,

  34. and I will raise them up at the last day.

  35. So, please keep your Bibles open, and if you need the bathrooms at all,

  36. just feel free to go to the back and follow the blue path all the way around to the ladies

  37. and to the gents if you need them.

  38. Let's pray and ask for God's help.

  39. Father, thank you for your words.

  40. Thank you for its truth.

  41. And we pray that your word would feed us this morning,

  42. that it would have an impact upon each of our lives,

  43. and that it would help us to depend upon Jesus more and more.

  44. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  45. And Gorta Moore, that's about the only Irish I know, I think,

  46. the Great Famine, the Great Famine of Ireland.

  47. Over a period of seven years, from 1845 to 1852,

  48. one million people died,

  49. and a further one million had to flee the country.

  50. The cause?

  51. A disease known as the potato blight,

  52. which killed off the annual potato harvest.

  53. It was devastating, because the vast majority of people living in Ireland at that time

  54. were dependent on the potato for food.

  55. You had potato for your breakfast, dinner, and tea.

  56. So without the potato, you died.

  57. Now what the potato was to the Irish in the mid-19th century,

  58. bread was to the Palestinian people of the first century.

  59. Bread was your staple diet.

  60. You had bread for your breakfast, dinner, and tea.

  61. In fact, you literally worked for your crust.

  62. 80% of your income would be spent on food,

  63. which was primarily bread.

  64. It was essential to life.

  65. If you had no bread, you died.

  66. But you could imagine, then, the delight of the crowds

  67. when Jesus turned up and did one of his signs.

  68. Let's pick it up in chapter 6, verse 5.

  69. We didn't read this, but we're going to read it now.

  70. Chapter 6, verse 5.

  71. When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming towards him,

  72. he said to Philip,

  73. Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?

  74. Jesus asked this only to test him,

  75. for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

  76. And Philip answered him,

  77. It would take more than half a year's wages

  78. to buy enough bread for each one just to have a bite.

  79. Another of his disciples, Andrew,

  80. Simon Peter's brother, spoke up,

  81. perhaps a little bit sarcastically.

  82. Here is a boy with five small barley loaves

  83. and two small fish.

  84. But how far is that going to go among so many?

  85. Jesus said,

  86. Make the people sit down.

  87. There was plenty of grass in that place,

  88. and they sat down.

  89. About 5,000 men were there.

  90. So that's not counting all the women and children.

  91. So we could say at least 10,000.

  92. Jesus then took the loaves,

  93. gave thanks,

  94. distributed to those who were seated

  95. as much as they wanted.

  96. An abundance of free bread.

  97. It's no wonder then that wherever Jesus went,

  98. the crowds were not far behind.

  99. So look at verse 25.

  100. When they found Jesus on the other side of the lake,

  101. they asked him,

  102. Rabbi, when did you get here?

  103. Jesus answered,

  104. Very truly I tell you,

  105. you are looking for me,

  106. not because you saw the signs I performed,

  107. but because you ate the loaves

  108. and had your fill.

  109. You see, Jesus had already performed

  110. a number of signs.

  111. Remember, he had turned the water into wine.

  112. He had healed a man

  113. who had been paralysed for 38 years.

  114. And now he was providing free food.

  115. But the signs Jesus did

  116. were not an end in themselves.

  117. They were always pointing beyond the miracle itself

  118. and pointing it to Jesus

  119. about who he is

  120. and what he had come to do.

  121. So what was this sign,

  122. this free bread sign,

  123. all about?

  124. Well, that's what we're going to look at together.

  125. This sign

  126. will teach us,

  127. first of all,

  128. that Jesus is

  129. the bread

  130. from heaven.

  131. Jesus is the bread

  132. from heaven.

  133. The crowd

  134. naturally thought that,

  135. well, if this guy Jesus

  136. gave us bread

  137. yesterday

  138. and we didn't have to

  139. even work for it,

  140. maybe he's going to give us

  141. bread tomorrow.

  142. All they could be thinking of

  143. was filling

  144. their bellies.

  145. Just give us bread

  146. bread

  147. and we'll be satisfied.

  148. Well, Jesus had something

  149. better to offer

  150. and we need to know

  151. and see

  152. the difference.

  153. First, Jesus talks about

  154. bread

  155. that spoils.

  156. Verse 27,

  157. do not work for food

  158. that spoils

  159. but for food

  160. that endures

  161. to eternal life.

  162. Now, bread

  163. mightn't be the top

  164. of our wants

  165. and desires list.

  166. Thankfully,

  167. we live in a part

  168. of the world

  169. where we have

  170. an abundance of food.

  171. We throw away bread.

  172. However,

  173. we do hunger

  174. for other things.

  175. Don't we

  176. desperately try

  177. to fill our lives

  178. with all kinds

  179. of stuff

  180. in an effort

  181. to find

  182. satisfaction?

  183. It can be

  184. physical things

  185. like the pursuit

  186. of sports

  187. and fitness

  188. and well-being.

  189. It can be material,

  190. a desire

  191. for more money

  192. or that job

  193. or that holiday.

  194. It can be relational,

  195. the desire

  196. for a friend

  197. or to get married.

  198. We work,

  199. we put in

  200. lots of effort

  201. chasing that

  202. one thing.

  203. If only I could

  204. grasp it

  205. and have it,

  206. that if it was

  207. in my life,

  208. it would satisfy

  209. me.

  210. What Jesus

  211. is saying,

  212. all of these

  213. things,

  214. the physical,

  215. the material,

  216. the relational,

  217. they can be

  218. all good.

  219. They're wonderful,

  220. good gifts

  221. from God

  222. to you.

  223. But get this,

  224. they don't

  225. last.

  226. They'll all

  227. spoil.

  228. Every one

  229. of them

  230. will perish.

  231. because everything

  232. that we desire

  233. in this life

  234. has a

  235. shelf life.

  236. In fact,

  237. when we have it,

  238. we find that

  239. it leaves us

  240. empty.

  241. We're only

  242. grasping

  243. for more.

  244. So Jesus,

  245. right from the

  246. outset,

  247. is saying to us,

  248. stop thinking

  249. about the

  250. physical

  251. and the

  252. temporary

  253. and reorder

  254. your lives

  255. and your

  256. heart

  257. and start

  258. thinking

  259. about the

  260. spiritual

  261. and the

  262. eternal.

  263. Verse 27,

  264. don't work

  265. for food

  266. that spoils,

  267. but for food

  268. that endures

  269. to eternal

  270. life.

  271. So what is

  272. the food

  273. that Jesus

  274. offers?

  275. What is

  276. the bread

  277. that endures

  278. to eternal

  279. life?

  280. Well,

  281. there's the

  282. bread

  283. from God.

  284. It seems

  285. the crowd

  286. are still

  287. thinking

  288. in physical

  289. terms.

  290. Look at

  291. verse 31.

  292. They remind

  293. Jesus of

  294. their history

  295. and their

  296. past.

  297. Our

  298. ancestors

  299. ate manna

  300. in the

  301. wilderness.

  302. As it is

  303. written,

  304. he gave

  305. them bread

  306. from heaven

  307. to eat.

  308. You may

  309. remember

  310. the account

  311. in Exodus

  312. when the

  313. Israelites

  314. were rescued

  315. from their

  316. slavery in

  317. Egypt.

  318. They found

  319. themselves in

  320. the wilderness,

  321. in the

  322. desert.

  323. Well,

  324. there was no

  325. food there.

  326. So God

  327. said to

  328. Moses,

  329. you can

  330. follow it

  331. on the

  332. screen,

  333. God said,

  334. I will

  335. rain down

  336. bread from

  337. heaven for

  338. you.

  339. So in

  340. the morning

  341. there was a

  342. layer of

  343. dew around

  344. the camp.

  345. When the

  346. dew was

  347. gone,

  348. thin flakes

  349. like frost

  350. appeared on

  351. the desert

  352. floor.

  353. The very

  354. first

  355. frosties.

  356. When the

  357. Israelites

  358. saw it,

  359. they said

  360. to each

  361. other,

  362. what is

  363. it?

  364. For they

  365. did not

  366. know what

  367. it was.

  368. And Moses

  369. said to

  370. them,

  371. it is the

  372. bread the

  373. Lord has

  374. given you

  375. to eat.

  376. bread.

  377. Now this

  378. went on

  379. for 40

  380. years.

  381. Every

  382. morning

  383. they would

  384. go out

  385. into their

  386. camp and

  387. there would

  388. be a

  389. fresh supply

  390. of bread

  391. that they

  392. would gather.

  393. So the

  394. crowd are

  395. thinking,

  396. you can

  397. imagine

  398. their minds

  399. whirring,

  400. hey Jesus,

  401. can you

  402. do what

  403. Moses did?

  404. Can you

  405. give us

  406. this food

  407. continually?

  408. Verse 32,

  409. Jesus said

  410. to them,

  411. very truly

  412. I tell you,

  413. it is not

  414. Moses who

  415. has given

  416. you the

  417. bread from

  418. heaven,

  419. in fact it

  420. was God

  421. who had

  422. done that,

  423. but it

  424. is my

  425. Father who

  426. gives you

  427. the true

  428. bread from

  429. heaven.

  430. For the

  431. bread of

  432. God is

  433. the bread

  434. that comes

  435. down from

  436. heaven and

  437. gives life

  438. to the

  439. world.

  440. You see,

  441. the bread

  442. that God

  443. is giving,

  444. that he

  445. offers,

  446. is not

  447. the physical

  448. bread that

  449. you'll get

  450. in Lidl

  451. that fills

  452. your belly

  453. one day

  454. and leaves

  455. you hungry

  456. the next.

  457. It's not

  458. the material

  459. temporary

  460. stuff that

  461. we squeeze

  462. into our

  463. hectic

  464. lives.

  465. The bread

  466. that God

  467. gives is

  468. Jesus who

  469. comes to

  470. give life

  471. to the

  472. world.

  473. Jesus who

  474. was sent

  475. from heaven

  476. provides life

  477. in all its

  478. fullness

  479. forever.

  480. Bread for

  481. our bellies

  482. is important.

  483. We'll enjoy

  484. our food

  485. today,

  486. but Jesus

  487. who is the

  488. true bread

  489. sent from

  490. heaven is

  491. essential.

  492. What the

  493. world gives,

  494. what this

  495. life offers

  496. us,

  497. will spoil

  498. and perish,

  499. but what

  500. God gives

  501. endures.

  502. Jesus says,

  503. I am the

  504. bread

  505. from heaven.

  506. And Jesus

  507. also says

  508. that he is

  509. the bread

  510. of life.

  511. Now like

  512. the crowd,

  513. we can

  514. perhaps miss

  515. what Jesus

  516. is saying.

  517. Verse 34,

  518. sir,

  519. they said,

  520. always give

  521. us this

  522. bread.

  523. You see,

  524. they're still

  525. focused on

  526. their

  527. tummies.

  528. They can't

  529. see past

  530. the physical

  531. and the

  532. temporary,

  533. so Jesus

  534. makes it

  535. abundantly

  536. clear.

  537. Verse 34,

  538. I am

  539. the bread

  540. of life.

  541. It's me,

  542. the food

  543. you need,

  544. the food

  545. that you

  546. desperately

  547. desire,

  548. it's me.

  549. You see,

  550. all these

  551. material

  552. longings

  553. that we

  554. have,

  555. the relational

  556. desires that

  557. we all

  558. have,

  559. well,

  560. they're just

  561. signals,

  562. they're just

  563. a taste of

  564. something much

  565. deeper down

  566. in our

  567. life,

  568. which is

  569. only filled

  570. by Jesus.

  571. Augustine

  572. famously wrote

  573. these words.

  574. Speaking of

  575. God,

  576. he says,

  577. you made

  578. us for

  579. yourself

  580. as our

  581. goal,

  582. and our

  583. heart is

  584. restless

  585. until it

  586. rests in

  587. you.

  588. In other

  589. words,

  590. our aching

  591. appetites

  592. are only

  593. ever truly

  594. filled

  595. in the

  596. person of

  597. Jesus.

  598. And Jesus

  599. goes on to

  600. show us

  601. two ways

  602. in which

  603. we can

  604. find life

  605. in him,

  606. the kind

  607. of life

  608. that he

  609. gives us.

  610. First,

  611. there is

  612. the bread

  613. that satisfies.

  614. Look at

  615. verse 35.

  616. Jesus

  617. declared,

  618. I am

  619. the bread

  620. of life.

  621. Whoever

  622. comes to

  623. me

  624. will never

  625. go hungry,

  626. and whoever

  627. believes in

  628. me will

  629. never

  630. be thirsty.

  631. The life

  632. of Jesus

  633. fills us

  634. and quenches

  635. us.

  636. There is

  637. no need

  638. to go

  639. looking and

  640. searching for

  641. anything else

  642. or anyone

  643. else,

  644. that magical

  645. thing,

  646. if only I

  647. had it.

  648. No,

  649. we have

  650. got it in

  651. the person

  652. of Jesus.

  653. You see,

  654. we all

  655. crave joy

  656. and happiness

  657. and we

  658. long to

  659. be satisfied,

  660. but whatever

  661. we have

  662. and wherever

  663. we go,

  664. it seems

  665. it's just

  666. never enough.

  667. We're always

  668. chasing our

  669. dreams.

  670. Isn't this

  671. what the

  672. writer to

  673. Ecclesiastes

  674. teaches us?

  675. Follow on

  676. the screens

  677. there what

  678. he says.

  679. He says,

  680. I denied

  681. myself

  682. nothing

  683. my eyes

  684. desired.

  685. I refused

  686. my heart

  687. no pleasure.

  688. My heart

  689. took delight

  690. in all my

  691. labour and

  692. this was the

  693. reward for

  694. all my

  695. toil.

  696. Yet when

  697. I surveyed

  698. all that

  699. my hands

  700. had done

  701. and what

  702. I had

  703. toiled to

  704. achieve,

  705. everything

  706. was

  707. meaningless.

  708. A chasing

  709. after the

  710. wind,

  711. nothing

  712. was

  713. gained

  714. under

  715. the

  716. sun.

  717. Do you

  718. see that

  719. word

  720. meaningless?

  721. It's

  722. emptiness.

  723. It's like

  724. trying to

  725. grasp a

  726. cloud.

  727. There's

  728. nothing

  729. there.

  730. And all

  731. this chasing

  732. and all

  733. this looking

  734. for things

  735. ultimately

  736. leaves us

  737. empty.

  738. But look

  739. what Jesus

  740. promises.

  741. He says,

  742. come to

  743. me and

  744. you will

  745. never go

  746. hungry.

  747. Come to

  748. me and

  749. you will

  750. be forgiven

  751. of all

  752. of your

  753. sin,

  754. all your

  755. guilt and

  756. all your

  757. shame can

  758. be dealt

  759. with.

  760. Come to

  761. me and

  762. you will

  763. never be

  764. condemned.

  765. Come to

  766. me and

  767. you can be

  768. a child

  769. of God

  770. with access

  771. to the

  772. Father.

  773. Come to

  774. me and

  775. you will

  776. never be

  777. thirsty.

  778. me and

  779. who

  780. satisfies

  781. completely.

  782. We don't

  783. need to

  784. go looking

  785. to anyone

  786. else or

  787. anything

  788. else.

  789. So he

  790. is bread

  791. that

  792. satisfies

  793. and he

  794. is bread

  795. that

  796. secures.

  797. Look at

  798. verse 37.

  799. All those

  800. the Father

  801. gives me

  802. will come

  803. to me

  804. and whoever

  805. comes to

  806. me, I

  807. will never

  808. drive away.

  809. Jesus is

  810. giving the

  811. invitation.

  812. All who

  813. come

  814. will not

  815. be driven

  816. away.

  817. It's a

  818. solid and

  819. sure guarantee

  820. that the

  821. life he

  822. offers is

  823. forever.

  824. Well, how

  825. can we be

  826. so sure?

  827. Well, look

  828. at verse 38.

  829. Jesus says,

  830. I have

  831. come down

  832. from heaven

  833. not to

  834. do my

  835. will, but

  836. to do the

  837. will of

  838. him who

  839. sent me.

  840. And what

  841. is the

  842. will?

  843. What's the

  844. desire of

  845. the Father?

  846. Verse 39.

  847. And this

  848. is the

  849. will of

  850. him who

  851. sent me,

  852. that I

  853. shall

  854. lose

  855. none

  856. of all

  857. those he

  858. has given

  859. me,

  860. but

  861. raise

  862. them up

  863. at the

  864. last day.

  865. Those who

  866. come to

  867. Jesus

  868. are secure

  869. in Jesus.

  870. Last week

  871. we looked at

  872. the phrase

  873. about crossing

  874. over from

  875. death to

  876. life.

  877. It's like we

  878. go through a

  879. door and we

  880. come into

  881. life.

  882. Well, you

  883. know what?

  884. There's no

  885. way back

  886. through that

  887. door.

  888. We are

  889. secure in

  890. Jesus forever.

  891. In fact, as

  892. the end of

  893. verse 39

  894. tells us,

  895. a day is

  896. going to

  897. come when

  898. all who

  899. have died

  900. in Jesus

  901. and are

  902. trusting him

  903. will be

  904. raised up,

  905. will be

  906. given

  907. brand new

  908. bodies,

  909. and we

  910. will enjoy

  911. an eternity

  912. with Jesus

  913. forever in

  914. his new

  915. creation.

  916. You see,

  917. everything that

  918. we can see,

  919. every possession

  920. that we own

  921. and touch

  922. and taste

  923. and hear,

  924. it will all

  925. spoil.

  926. It neither

  927. lasts nor

  928. satisfies,

  929. but to have

  930. Jesus

  931. is to have

  932. life

  933. that is

  934. eternally

  935. secure

  936. and will

  937. never perish,

  938. spoil,

  939. or fade.

  940. Verse 40,

  941. for my

  942. Father's

  943. will is

  944. that everyone

  945. who looks

  946. to the

  947. Son and

  948. believes in

  949. him shall

  950. have eternal

  951. life and

  952. I will

  953. raise them

  954. up at

  955. the last

  956. day.

  957. How amazing

  958. that will

  959. be.

  960. Come to

  961. me, says

  962. Jesus,

  963. because I

  964. am the

  965. bread of

  966. life.

  967. life.

  968. So how

  969. do we

  970. receive

  971. this

  972. life-giving

  973. bread?

  974. How can

  975. we

  976. experience

  977. it for

  978. ourselves?

  979. How can

  980. we enjoy

  981. it on a

  982. daily

  983. basis?

  984. Well,

  985. Jesus is

  986. the bread

  987. from heaven,

  988. he's the

  989. bread of

  990. life.

  991. And

  992. Jesus is

  993. the bread

  994. we eat.

  995. Jesus

  996. says

  997. something

  998. quite shocking.

  999. Look at

  1000. verse 51.

  1001. I am

  1002. the

  1003. living

  1004. bread

  1005. that

  1006. came

  1007. down

  1008. from

  1009. heaven.

  1010. Whoever

  1011. eats

  1012. this

  1013. bread

  1014. will

  1015. live

  1016. forever.

  1017. This

  1018. bread

  1019. is my

  1020. flesh

  1021. which I

  1022. will give

  1023. for the

  1024. life

  1025. of the

  1026. world.

  1027. We are

  1028. to eat

  1029. Jesus.

  1030. We are

  1031. to feed

  1032. on him.

  1033. we say

  1034. that sounds

  1035. an awfully

  1036. bit

  1037. strange.

  1038. Can we

  1039. really

  1040. eat

  1041. him?

  1042. Well,

  1043. we are

  1044. not to

  1045. literally

  1046. eat,

  1047. so what

  1048. does it

  1049. mean?

  1050. Well,

  1051. I think

  1052. two things.

  1053. I put it

  1054. like this.

  1055. First,

  1056. it is

  1057. bread that

  1058. we can

  1059. trust.

  1060. Suppose

  1061. you have

  1062. never seen

  1063. or tasted

  1064. bread.

  1065. bread.

  1066. And

  1067. someone

  1068. comes up

  1069. to you

  1070. and offers

  1071. you a

  1072. bread roll,

  1073. a nice

  1074. crusty

  1075. roll.

  1076. And in

  1077. an effort

  1078. to convince

  1079. you of

  1080. its goodness,

  1081. they explain,

  1082. well,

  1083. Johnny,

  1084. it's made

  1085. of flour,

  1086. it's got

  1087. some water

  1088. in and it's

  1089. put in the

  1090. oven and

  1091. it's baked

  1092. and when

  1093. it comes

  1094. out,

  1095. it's chewy

  1096. on the

  1097. outside

  1098. and soft

  1099. in the

  1100. inside.

  1101. Try it,

  1102. one bite

  1103. of it

  1104. and it

  1105. will melt

  1106. in your

  1107. mouth.

  1108. How do

  1109. you know

  1110. if it's

  1111. good?

  1112. The only

  1113. way you

  1114. know if

  1115. it's good,

  1116. the only

  1117. way you

  1118. know if

  1119. they're

  1120. telling the

  1121. truth is

  1122. if you

  1123. taste it

  1124. yourself.

  1125. You must

  1126. eat it.

  1127. Well,

  1128. in the same

  1129. way,

  1130. Jesus is

  1131. calling us

  1132. to not

  1133. just hear

  1134. his words,

  1135. but to

  1136. believe him,

  1137. to trust

  1138. in him.

  1139. Verse 53,

  1140. Jesus said

  1141. to them,

  1142. very truly

  1143. I tell

  1144. you,

  1145. unless you

  1146. eat the

  1147. flesh of

  1148. the Son

  1149. of Man

  1150. and drink

  1151. his blood,

  1152. you have

  1153. no life

  1154. in you.

  1155. Whoever

  1156. eats my

  1157. flesh and

  1158. drinks my

  1159. blood has

  1160. eternal life

  1161. and I will

  1162. raise them

  1163. up on the

  1164. last day.

  1165. For my

  1166. flesh is

  1167. real food

  1168. and my

  1169. blood is

  1170. real drink.

  1171. You see,

  1172. to eat

  1173. and drink

  1174. of Jesus

  1175. means we're

  1176. to trust

  1177. in him.

  1178. We're to

  1179. believe in

  1180. him.

  1181. It's to

  1182. place all

  1183. our hope

  1184. in Jesus

  1185. because we

  1186. don't get

  1187. to experience

  1188. the life

  1189. Jesus gives

  1190. by simply

  1191. knowing about

  1192. him and

  1193. getting an

  1194. A in your

  1195. religion test

  1196. or just

  1197. having

  1198. information

  1199. about

  1200. Jesus.

  1201. No,

  1202. we experience

  1203. the life

  1204. he gives

  1205. to us

  1206. by having

  1207. faith in

  1208. him,

  1209. by committing

  1210. ourselves to

  1211. him fully

  1212. and completely.

  1213. I wonder

  1214. if we've all

  1215. experienced

  1216. this life.

  1217. You can

  1218. trust him

  1219. but don't

  1220. take my

  1221. word for

  1222. it.

  1223. As we

  1224. read in

  1225. Psalm 34

  1226. earlier,

  1227. taste and

  1228. you will

  1229. see that

  1230. he is

  1231. good.

  1232. He is

  1233. good.

  1234. So Jesus

  1235. is bread

  1236. that we

  1237. can trust

  1238. and then

  1239. second bread

  1240. we can

  1241. feed on

  1242. because not

  1243. only are we

  1244. to taste,

  1245. there's the

  1246. implication here

  1247. as we read

  1248. on that we're

  1249. to keep on

  1250. eating,

  1251. we're to

  1252. keep on

  1253. feeding.

  1254. Verse 56,

  1255. whoever eats

  1256. or feeds

  1257. on my

  1258. flesh

  1259. and drinks

  1260. of my

  1261. blood

  1262. remains

  1263. in me

  1264. and I

  1265. in them.

  1266. The crowd

  1267. that were

  1268. following Jesus

  1269. they needed

  1270. physical bread,

  1271. we need

  1272. bread,

  1273. if we don't

  1274. have it we

  1275. die,

  1276. none of us

  1277. can survive

  1278. without

  1279. eating.

  1280. Well it's

  1281. the same

  1282. for us

  1283. spiritually,

  1284. we must

  1285. continually

  1286. feed on

  1287. Jesus

  1288. because he

  1289. not only

  1290. satisfies

  1291. and secures,

  1292. he sustains

  1293. us through

  1294. all of life.

  1295. Do you see

  1296. what it's

  1297. saying in

  1298. verse 56?

  1299. You will

  1300. remain in

  1301. me and I

  1302. in you.

  1303. It will

  1304. maintain,

  1305. it will

  1306. grow our

  1307. relationship

  1308. with him.

  1309. Verse 57

  1310. Just as

  1311. the living

  1312. father sent

  1313. me and I

  1314. live because

  1315. of the

  1316. father,

  1317. so the

  1318. one who

  1319. feeds on

  1320. me will

  1321. live because

  1322. of me.

  1323. So how

  1324. do we

  1325. feed on

  1326. Jesus?

  1327. How are we

  1328. going to

  1329. feed on

  1330. Jesus together?

  1331. Father?

  1332. Well as

  1333. we close I

  1334. want to

  1335. suggest two

  1336. things that

  1337. we can

  1338. do.

  1339. Here's the

  1340. first one.

  1341. No, it's

  1342. not there, I

  1343. forgot to

  1344. write it.

  1345. I'll tell you

  1346. what it is.

  1347. First we

  1348. feed on

  1349. Jesus by

  1350. reading his

  1351. word.

  1352. We feed on

  1353. Jesus by

  1354. reading his

  1355. word.

  1356. It's the

  1357. word of

  1358. God, the

  1359. word of

  1360. Jesus that

  1361. will nourish

  1362. us and

  1363. grow us.

  1364. And that's

  1365. how we

  1366. become fruitful.

  1367. That's why

  1368. we come

  1369. together on

  1370. a Sunday to

  1371. hear the

  1372. word of

  1373. God.

  1374. Because without

  1375. a daily

  1376. regular diet

  1377. of God's

  1378. word we

  1379. become

  1380. unhealthy.

  1381. We become

  1382. malnourished.

  1383. We become

  1384. sick.

  1385. And we'll

  1386. find ourselves

  1387. seeking and

  1388. searching for

  1389. all the

  1390. things and

  1391. placing all

  1392. our confidence

  1393. and our

  1394. hope in

  1395. things that

  1396. spoil and

  1397. perish.

  1398. Just as we

  1399. need to

  1400. eat to be

  1401. healthy and

  1402. strong physically

  1403. so we need

  1404. to depend and

  1405. feed on

  1406. God's word.

  1407. That daily

  1408. diet so

  1409. that we

  1410. become mature

  1411. and strong

  1412. together and

  1413. live in a

  1414. vibrant

  1415. communion with

  1416. the Lord

  1417. Jesus.

  1418. So first

  1419. let us

  1420. gather together.

  1421. let us

  1422. meet with

  1423. one another

  1424. and on

  1425. ourselves

  1426. let us

  1427. read his

  1428. word.

  1429. We feed

  1430. on Jesus

  1431. by devouring

  1432. the word

  1433. of God.

  1434. And second

  1435. we can

  1436. feed on

  1437. Jesus

  1438. by remembering

  1439. his death.

  1440. We feed

  1441. on Jesus

  1442. by remembering

  1443. his death.

  1444. death.

  1445. Now I'm

  1446. not suggesting

  1447. that Jesus

  1448. is talking

  1449. about the

  1450. Lord's

  1451. supper here.

  1452. I think that

  1453. comes later

  1454. on in

  1455. John's

  1456. gospel and

  1457. we'll get

  1458. to that

  1459. when we

  1460. get there.

  1461. However I

  1462. do think

  1463. these remaining

  1464. verses

  1465. verses 53

  1466. through to

  1467. the end

  1468. are a

  1469. picture of

  1470. what we

  1471. do when

  1472. we do

  1473. remember

  1474. Jesus'

  1475. death.

  1476. as we

  1477. physically

  1478. eat the

  1479. bread

  1480. so as we

  1481. gather

  1482. around the

  1483. Lord's

  1484. supper

  1485. as we

  1486. share

  1487. communion

  1488. together

  1489. as we

  1490. physically

  1491. eat the

  1492. bread

  1493. as we

  1494. drink the

  1495. juice

  1496. we are

  1497. spiritually

  1498. feeding on

  1499. the flesh

  1500. and blood

  1501. of Jesus.

  1502. We're saying

  1503. as we come

  1504. to the

  1505. table

  1506. that I

  1507. need

  1508. Jesus

  1509. that we're

  1510. depending upon

  1511. his very

  1512. death

  1513. for us

  1514. in our

  1515. place.

  1516. A death

  1517. that secures

  1518. forgiveness

  1519. and secures

  1520. our eternal

  1521. life with

  1522. him.

  1523. Life with

  1524. him forever.

  1525. We feed

  1526. on him

  1527. as we

  1528. remember

  1529. his death.

  1530. Verse 51

  1531. Jesus

  1532. says

  1533. I am

  1534. the

  1535. living

  1536. bread

  1537. that came

  1538. down from

  1539. heaven.

  1540. Whoever

  1541. eats this

  1542. bread

  1543. will live

  1544. forever.

  1545. This

  1546. bread is

  1547. my flesh

  1548. which I

  1549. will give

  1550. for the

  1551. life of

  1552. the world.

  1553. Trust in

  1554. him.

  1555. Feed

  1556. on him.

  1557. Taste

  1558. and you

  1559. will see

  1560. that he

  1561. is good.

  1562. he will

  1563. satisfy

  1564. you.

  1565. He will

  1566. secure

  1567. you and

  1568. he will

  1569. sustain

  1570. you in

  1571. that

  1572. beautiful

  1573. communion

  1574. one with

  1575. the

  1576. father.

  1577. Eat

  1578. continually

  1579. and you

  1580. will experience

  1581. life in

  1582. all its

  1583. fullness.

  1584. I am

  1585. the bread

  1586. of life.

  1587. let us

  1588. feed on

  1589. him

  1590. who

  1591. gives us

  1592. life.

  1593. Let's

  1594. pray

  1595. together.

  1596. Father we

  1597. thank you

  1598. for

  1599. physical

  1600. food

  1601. that we

  1602. have had

  1603. this

  1604. morning.

  1605. For

  1606. food that

  1607. we are

  1608. going to

  1609. eat

  1610. throughout

  1611. this

  1612. day.

  1613. food and

  1614. drink that

  1615. we will

  1616. have

  1617. tomorrow.

  1618. And yet

  1619. above all

  1620. of this

  1621. we thank

  1622. you for

  1623. the most

  1624. precious

  1625. and wonderful

  1626. gift of

  1627. Jesus the

  1628. bread of

  1629. life sent

  1630. from heaven

  1631. to give us

  1632. life in all

  1633. its fullness.

  1634. Father will

  1635. you help

  1636. each one

  1637. of us to

  1638. feed on

  1639. you

  1640. continually

  1641. you

  1642. father will

  1643. you grow

  1644. us as

  1645. we read

  1646. your word

  1647. and would

  1648. you cause

  1649. a greater

  1650. dependence

  1651. upon you

  1652. as we

  1653. gather

  1654. around

  1655. your

  1656. table.

  1657. Father may

  1658. our

  1659. communion

  1660. with you

  1661. increase

  1662. and deepen

  1663. as we

  1664. eat of

  1665. Christ.

  1666. Please help

  1667. us we

  1668. pray.

  1669. for we

  1670. need it.

  1671. In Jesus

  1672. name.

  1673. Amen.

  1674. Amen.

  1675. We're going

  1676. to sing

  1677. together

  1678. what grace

  1679. is Jesus

  1680. my redeemer.

  1681. He is the

  1682. gift.

  1683. He is the

  1684. bread we

  1685. eat.

  1686. Let's

  1687. thank him

  1688. through our

  1689. song as we

  1690. praise God

  1691. together.

  1692. Let's stand

  1693. together as we

  1694. sing.

  1695. shall Wass

  1696. for 50

  1697. not to be

  1698. for he
