  1. So if you turn in your Bibles again to John's Gospel, John's Gospel chapter 7, and Mary

  2. is going to read for us this morning.

  3. So if you have your read Bibles, it's on page 1071, 1071.

  4. John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  5. After this, Jesus went around in Galilee.

  6. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for

  7. a way to kill him.

  8. But when the Jewish festival of tabernacles was near, Jesus' brothers said to him, leave

  9. Galilee and go to Judea so that your disciples there may see the works you do.

  10. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret.

  11. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.

  12. For even his own brothers didn't believe in him.

  13. Therefore, Jesus told them, my time is not yet here.

  14. For you, any time will do.

  15. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil.

  16. You go to the festival.

  17. I'm not going up to this festival because my time has not yet fully come.

  18. After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.

  19. However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but

  20. in secret.

  21. Now, at the festival, the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, where is he?

  22. Among the crowds, there was widespread crispering about him.

  23. Some said, he's a good man.

  24. Others replied, no, he deceives the people.

  25. But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.

  26. Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.

  27. The Jews there were amazed and asked, how did this man get such learning without having been taught?

  28. Jesus answered, my teaching is not my own.

  29. It comes from the one who sent me.

  30. Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.

  31. Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory.

  32. But he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth.

  33. There is nothing false about him.

  34. Skip down now, please, to verse 25.

  35. At that point, some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, isn't this the man they're trying to kill?

  36. Here he is, speaking publicly, and they're not saying a word to him.

  37. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah?

  38. But we know where this man is from.

  39. When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.

  40. Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out,

  41. Yes, you know me, and you know where I'm from.

  42. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.

  43. You do not know him, but I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.

  44. At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand in him, because his hour had not yet come.

  45. Still, many in the crowd believed in him, they said.

  46. When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?

  47. Skip down again, please, to verse 37.

  48. On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice,

  49. Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.

  50. Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.

  51. By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.

  52. Up to that time the Spirit had not yet been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

  53. On hearing his words, some of the people said, surely this is the prophet.

  54. Others said, he is the Messiah.

  55. Still others asked, how can the Messiah come from Galilee?

  56. Does not scripture say that the Messiah will come from David's descendants,

  57. and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?

  58. Thus the people were divided because of Jesus.

  59. Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand in him.

  60. Finally, the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees,

  61. who asked them, why didn't you bring him in?

  62. No one ever spoke the way this man does, the guards replied.

  63. You mean he has deceived you also?

  64. The Pharisees retorted.

  65. Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?

  66. No, but this mob that knows nothing of the law, there is a curse on them.

  67. Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked,

  68. does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?

  69. They replied, are you from Galilee too?

  70. Look into it and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.

  71. Thanks so much, Mary.

  72. Good morning, everybody.

  73. Good morning.

  74. That was a long passage for Mary to read. Thank you very much.

  75. Read very well.

  76. Let's pray before we get stuck into it.

  77. Holy Spirit, we pray that you would help us today to see the glory of Jesus,

  78. to see him for who he really is,

  79. and to correct any misunderstandings that we have.

  80. In Jesus' name and for his glory.

  81. Amen.

  82. Amen.

  83. So we're at the point in John's Gospel where Jesus is revealing himself throughout the country of Judea,

  84. both in his signs and in his teaching.

  85. And everybody is talking about Jesus.

  86. The scene here is set during the Festival of Tabernacles,

  87. when Jews from everywhere crammed into Jerusalem.

  88. And the city is divided over this one massive question.

  89. Who is Jesus?

  90. You probably noticed as we were reading through,

  91. this chapter is chaotic.

  92. John is trying to capture the unrelenting debate

  93. surrounding the most controversial figure in Judea at this time.

  94. All the while,

  95. the hostile religious leaders,

  96. they're trying to arrest and kill Jesus.

  97. They make three attempts to do so in this one chapter.

  98. Yet into all this chaos,

  99. Jesus,

  100. the eternal Son of God,

  101. speaks.

  102. The maker of everyone and everything

  103. stands up in the middle of the madness

  104. and confusion.

  105. And he tells us exactly who he is.

  106. But before we hear Jesus,

  107. let's take a walk among the crowds in Jerusalem.

  108. Let's listen in to what they're saying about Jesus.

  109. First of all, verse 3.

  110. Jesus' brothers say that he's a showman.

  111. People ought to quit touring around the backwater villages of Galilee

  112. and hit the big stage in Jerusalem.

  113. More signs,

  114. more wonders,

  115. before more people.

  116. His brothers are really looking for the fame of association.

  117. Being the brother of the superhero.

  118. But is that all Jesus is?

  119. Is Jesus just a means to my own ends?

  120. In verse 12,

  121. some of the crowds say he's a liar.

  122. He's leading people astray.

  123. In the same verse,

  124. others say he's a good man.

  125. Nothing more.

  126. On the flip side,

  127. verse 20,

  128. that same crowd are saying he's demon possessed.

  129. No one but a raving lunatic would claim to be God.

  130. While again it swings in verse 31,

  131. others believe that he genuinely is the promised savior,

  132. the Messiah.

  133. Asking how many more signs does this guy have to do to prove it?

  134. But it swings like a pendulum again.

  135. I warned you,

  136. this chapter is chaotic.

  137. Because in verse 41,

  138. others say,

  139. no, no,

  140. he's not the Messiah.

  141. He's just a great prophet.

  142. He speaks God's words,

  143. but only that.

  144. All the while,

  145. the Jewish leaders reject him

  146. as irrelevant.

  147. A scourge on society.

  148. Judea is a melting pot

  149. pot of opinions about who Jesus is.

  150. But as you look at that list,

  151. you realize that 2,000 years later,

  152. Ireland is actually just as divided about Jesus

  153. as they were back then.

  154. For some of us,

  155. Jesus is just a means to our own ends.

  156. He's the ticket to heaven in my back pocket.

  157. Now I can basically live whatever way I want.

  158. Others say Jesus is a liar.

  159. He's simply lying when he claims to be the only way to heaven.

  160. Some in Ireland say,

  161. well,

  162. Jesus is just a good man.

  163. Admirable in many ways,

  164. but don't take seriously his claims of divine ownership over your life.

  165. Others think him to be a raving lunatic.

  166. Stephen Fry is the leader of one of these groups.

  167. He was deluded,

  168. Stephen Fry says,

  169. to think that Jesus was God.

  170. Some Irish people, though,

  171. do believe

  172. that Jesus is the Messiah,

  173. the Son of God.

  174. But more

  175. say that he's just

  176. a great prophet.

  177. Up there with Muhammad

  178. and the Buddha

  179. to be respected.

  180. Still others say

  181. he's irrelevant.

  182. And do you know what?

  183. The faster we move on from Jesus,

  184. the better for Irish society.

  185. Who is Jesus?

  186. We can't all be right.

  187. Well,

  188. one thing is that

  189. Jesus is not just

  190. whoever we want him to be.

  191. In fact,

  192. he's earned the right

  193. to tell us

  194. who he is.

  195. And we need

  196. to know

  197. who Jesus

  198. really is

  199. more than anything.

  200. That's what Jesus

  201. is about to reveal to us.

  202. And we're going to hear it

  203. from the man himself.

  204. Firstly,

  205. Jesus is sent

  206. from the Father.

  207. So Jesus makes

  208. this shocking claim

  209. to have existed

  210. with God the Father

  211. before his life on earth.

  212. Now,

  213. for each one of us,

  214. there's a moment

  215. when our life began.

  216. I know that might sound

  217. completely obvious to you,

  218. but it's true, right?

  219. Now,

  220. when you meet someone

  221. for the first time,

  222. once you've,

  223. you know,

  224. established what their name

  225. is,

  226. established what football

  227. team they support,

  228. you may start to ask,

  229. where did you come from?

  230. And you know what?

  231. We are fascinated

  232. in our culture

  233. to know

  234. where people

  235. come from.

  236. And if you asked me,

  237. I'd tell you

  238. I'm originally

  239. from a farm

  240. in Drimalik.

  241. I know no one here

  242. has probably even heard

  243. of that place,

  244. but I'm still proud

  245. to be from Drimalik

  246. in West Cork.

  247. And my parents

  248. are called

  249. David and Elizabeth.

  250. That's where I'm from.

  251. Well,

  252. the crowd,

  253. they look at Jesus

  254. and they say,

  255. oh,

  256. we know where

  257. this guy's from.

  258. He's Jesus.

  259. His dad is Joseph,

  260. the carpenter.

  261. He's just from Nazareth.

  262. Oh yeah,

  263. we know him.

  264. Now,

  265. he couldn't be

  266. the Messiah.

  267. But look how Jesus

  268. responds to them

  269. in verse 28.

  270. Then Jesus,

  271. still teaching

  272. in the temple courts,

  273. cried out,

  274. yes,

  275. you know me

  276. and you know

  277. where I'm from.

  278. I am not here

  279. on my own authority,

  280. but he who sent me

  281. is true.

  282. You do not know him,

  283. but I know him

  284. because I am from him

  285. and he sent me.

  286. At this,

  287. they tried to seize him.

  288. Why are the people

  289. so outraged

  290. at what Jesus just said?

  291. It's because Jesus

  292. is claiming

  293. that he lived

  294. in eternity past

  295. before his earthly life.

  296. He is not originally

  297. from Nazareth.

  298. He's actually from

  299. God,

  300. sent by the Father.

  301. And the crowd

  302. are so enraged

  303. by him saying this

  304. because he was actually

  305. claiming to be equal

  306. with God

  307. in that statement.

  308. Could you flick back

  309. in your Bibles

  310. to John chapter 1?

    John 1 chapter mention

  311. Just a couple pages back.

  312. We're going to look

  313. at verse 18.

  314. And this fleshes it out

  315. a little bit more for us.

  316. John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  317. and verse 18.

  318. It says this,

  319. No one has ever seen God,

  320. but the one and only Son,

  321. who is himself God

  322. and is in closest relationship

  323. with the Father,

  324. has made him known.

  325. that's who Jesus is.

  326. He is God,

  327. the Son,

  328. for eternity,

  329. sharing closest relationship

  330. with the Father.

  331. He has revealed

  332. what God

  333. is like to us.

  334. All things were made

  335. through him

  336. and for him.

  337. He sustains

  338. all things

  339. by his powerful word.

  340. He is.

  341. He is.

  342. We don't decide

  343. who Jesus is.

  344. We don't decide

  345. what Jesus is like.

  346. He is

  347. who he has always been

  348. for eternity.

  349. So the question is,

  350. what should our response

  351. be

  352. to him?

  353. Well,

  354. we should give him

  355. the highest

  356. honor

  357. that he is due

  358. and glorify him

  359. as God,

  360. the Son,

  361. sent

  362. from the Father.

  363. Is Jesus

  364. just a good man

  365. to you?

  366. Or is he

  367. the God

  368. man?

  369. We show

  370. our belief

  371. by humbly

  372. submitting our lives

  373. to him

  374. as our maker

  375. and sustainer

  376. and listening

  377. to him.

  378. And that actually

  379. leads us

  380. to the second thing

  381. that Jesus

  382. has to say

  383. about himself.

  384. He is

  385. the man

  386. of truth.

  387. Now,

  388. if you flick back

  389. to John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  390. in verse 12,

  391. some of the crowd

  392. claim that Jesus

  393. is a liar,

  394. right?

  395. He's simply

  396. leading people

  397. astray.

  398. Others,

  399. in verse 15,

  400. are amazed

  401. at his knowledge

  402. and teaching.

  403. He's got no

  404. formal education.

  405. How is he able

  406. to teach like this?

  407. Well,

  408. Jesus addresses

  409. both of these groups

  410. in verse 16.

  411. Read along with me.

  412. Verse 16,

  413. Jesus answered,

  414. my teaching is not

  415. my own.

  416. It comes from the one

  417. who sent me.

  418. Anyone who chooses

  419. to do the will

  420. of God

  421. will find out

  422. whether my teaching

  423. comes from God

  424. or whether I speak

  425. on my own.

  426. Whoever speaks

  427. on their own

  428. does so

  429. to gain

  430. personal glory.

  431. But he who seeks

  432. the glory

  433. of the one

  434. who sent him

  435. is a man

  436. of truth.

  437. There is nothing

  438. false

  439. about him.

  440. Jesus says,

  441. I am

  442. that man

  443. of truth.

  444. There is no

  445. falsehood

  446. in me.

  447. How do we know?

  448. Well,

  449. Jesus says

  450. his teaching

  451. comes from God

  452. the Father.

  453. That's the first

  454. proof.

  455. And here's

  456. the second.

  457. He seeks

  458. his Father's

  459. glory

  460. not his own.

  461. Now think about

  462. that for a second.

  463. As people

  464. it's very

  465. difficult

  466. for us

  467. to have

  468. pure

  469. motives

  470. whenever we

  471. seek

  472. our own

  473. glory.

  474. Right?

  475. Actually what

  476. happens is

  477. we get selfish.

  478. We might say

  479. whatever people

  480. want to hear

  481. so as to get

  482. in with the

  483. cool crowd.

  484. we might not

  485. really want

  486. what's best

  487. for others.

  488. We might just

  489. use them

  490. to get higher

  491. up the ladder.

  492. But Jesus

  493. says I'm not

  494. like that.

  495. When Jesus

  496. seeks his

  497. Father's glory

  498. it's another

  499. proof that

  500. what he says

  501. is true.

  502. There are no

  503. selfish ulterior

  504. motives.

  505. He's not a

  506. crowd pleaser.

  507. He truly

  508. seeks his

  509. Father's glory

  510. glory and

  511. our good.

  512. And he does

  513. this by

  514. simply telling

  515. us what

  516. his Father

  517. told him

  518. even if it

  519. ends up

  520. costing him

  521. his life.

  522. So we can

  523. trust everything

  524. that Jesus

  525. says to be

  526. true

  527. but the

  528. problem is

  529. that we

  530. don't.

  531. Or we like

  532. most of what

  533. Jesus says

  534. that we

  535. don't believe

  536. us really

  537. uncomfortable.

  538. Like when

  539. he says he's

  540. the only

  541. way to

  542. heaven.

  543. Where does

  544. that leave

  545. my friends

  546. and family

  547. who don't

  548. believe in

  549. Jesus?

  550. Or when

  551. he tells us

  552. to loosen

  553. our grip

  554. and our

  555. money and

  556. finances and

  557. to give

  558. generously to

  559. others.

  560. Well will

  561. he really

  562. provide for

  563. me like

  564. he promised?

  565. Or when

  566. Jesus tells

  567. us that

  568. he's

  569. sovereign

  570. and in

  571. control

  572. over

  573. even our

  574. deepest

  575. suffering

  576. and pain.

  577. How could

  578. God do

  579. that?

  580. We

  581. struggle

  582. to trust

  583. Jesus'

  584. word.

  585. But Jesus

  586. says if you

  587. want to know

  588. who I really

  589. am,

  590. I am

  591. the man

  592. of truth.

  593. You can

  594. trust everything

  595. I say.

  596. And believing

  597. in me means

  598. trusting in

  599. me even

  600. when you

  601. don't

  602. understand it

  603. right now.

  604. So will

  605. you believe?

  606. Will you

  607. take Jesus

  608. as his

  609. word?

  610. So far

  611. we've seen

  612. that Jesus

  613. is sent

  614. from the

  615. Father.

  616. He's God's

  617. eternal

  618. son.

  619. And we've

  620. also seen

  621. he's the

  622. man of

  623. truth.

  624. we can

  625. trust what

  626. he says.

  627. And now

  628. we come

  629. to the

  630. last one.

  631. John has

  632. been steadily

  633. building the

  634. tension

  635. through this

  636. chapter and

  637. now Jesus

  638. is about to

  639. reveal himself

  640. as the

  641. giver

  642. of the

  643. spirit.

  644. But before

  645. we read

  646. we need to

  647. understand the

  648. context of

  649. this festival

  650. of tabernacles.

  651. God had

  652. commanded the

  653. Jews to

  654. celebrate this

  655. festival to

  656. remember how

  657. he brought

  658. his people

  659. out of

  660. Egypt over

  661. a thousand

  662. years beforehand

  663. through the

  664. wilderness and

  665. into the

  666. promised land.

  667. Now at one

  668. point along

  669. that journey

  670. the people

  671. were in this

  672. massive desert

  673. and they

  674. were thirsty

  675. and they

  676. cried out to

  677. God.

  678. And what God

  679. did was he

  680. told Moses

  681. to strike

  682. a rock

  683. with his

  684. staff.

  685. And a

  686. river of

  687. water flowed

  688. miraculously

  689. from this

  690. rock.

  691. The people

  692. were saved.

  693. So every

  694. year at

  695. this festival

  696. the Jews

  697. would remember

  698. that moment

  699. in their

  700. history where

  701. God had

  702. provided them

  703. water.

  704. And what they

  705. would do,

  706. it's really

  707. interesting,

  708. right?

  709. They would

  710. actually draw

  711. water from

  712. a pool

  713. at the

  714. bottom of

  715. the city

  716. and they

  717. would carry

  718. it in this

  719. large procession

  720. through the

  721. city streets

  722. all the way

  723. up to the

  724. temple.

  725. And while

  726. everyone in

  727. the city

  728. watched on

  729. they would

  730. pour out

  731. the water

  732. on the

  733. big altar

  734. in front

  735. of the

  736. temple.

  737. That is the

  738. context

  739. into which

  740. Jesus

  741. stands up

  742. and says

  743. what he's

  744. just about

  745. to say.

  746. Look at

  747. this in

  748. verse 37.

  749. On the

  750. last and

  751. greatest day

  752. of the

  753. festival

  754. Jesus

  755. stood and

  756. said in

  757. a loud

  758. voice,

  759. let anyone

  760. who is

  761. thirsty

  762. come to

  763. me and

  764. drink.

  765. Whoever

  766. believes in

  767. me,

  768. as scripture

  769. has said,

  770. rivers of

  771. living water

  772. will flow

  773. from within

  774. them.

  775. Jesus

  776. reveals

  777. himself

  778. as the

  779. only one

  780. who can

  781. truly provide

  782. us with

  783. living water

  784. which quenches

  785. our spiritual

  786. thirst forever.

  787. Let's read

  788. on to find

  789. out what is

  790. this living

  791. water.

  792. What does

  793. Jesus mean?

  794. Well, John

  795. clarifies.

  796. Verse 39,

  797. he says,

  798. by this he

  799. meant the

  800. spirit whom

  801. those who

  802. believed in

  803. him were

  804. later to

  805. receive.

  806. Up to that

  807. time the

  808. spirit had

  809. not been

  810. given since

  811. Jesus had

  812. not yet

  813. been glorified.

  814. So the

  815. people of

  816. Israel were

  817. thirsty in

  818. the wilderness

  819. when God

  820. gave them

  821. water to

  822. drink.

  823. Jesus now

  824. invites everyone

  825. who is

  826. spiritually thirsty

  827. to come to

  828. him for

  829. drink and

  830. that means

  831. to believe

  832. in him

  833. as God,

  834. as saviour

  835. from our

  836. sin and

  837. receive

  838. not just

  839. a once

  840. off drink

  841. like he

  842. would from

  843. the tap

  844. out there.

  845. No,

  846. Jesus offers

  847. us a

  848. river of

  849. living water

  850. flowing from

  851. within us

  852. forever.

  853. It's a

  854. spring that

  855. will never

  856. run out.

  857. And that

  858. water,

  859. John says,

  860. is the

  861. Holy Spirit.

  862. Spirit.

  863. He's the

  864. third member

  865. of the

  866. Trinity.

  867. He has

  868. existed for

  869. eternity in

  870. perfect relationship

  871. with the

  872. Father and

  873. the Son.

  874. The Spirit

  875. actually

  876. initiates our

  877. new spiritual

  878. life in

  879. Christ.

  880. He's called

  881. the helper

  882. or the

  883. comforter.

  884. He gives

  885. us power

  886. to live the

  887. Christian life.

  888. life.

  889. But the

  890. thing is

  891. that before

  892. Jesus came,

  893. the Spirit

  894. had never

  895. dwelt in

  896. anyone.

  897. Through the

  898. Old Testament,

  899. the Spirit

  900. rests upon

  901. people,

  902. but never

  903. inside.

  904. So, for

  905. instance,

  906. Moses or

  907. David would

  908. have had a

  909. special anointing

  910. of the Spirit

  911. on them to

  912. do special

  913. things for

  914. God, but

  915. he actually

  916. never indwelt

  917. anyone.

  918. Yes.

  919. John tells

  920. us here in

  921. verse 39 that

  922. once Jesus has

  923. returned to

  924. heaven, now

  925. anyone who

  926. believes in

  927. Jesus will

  928. receive the

  929. Holy Spirit.

  930. God himself

  931. would take

  932. up residence

  933. in everyone

  934. who would

  935. believe in

  936. him.

  937. This is

  938. totally new

  939. and

  940. astonishingly

  941. great and

  942. was foretold

  943. hundreds of

  944. years beforehand.

  945. Isaiah

  946. prophesied that

  947. God would

  948. pour out his

  949. Spirit on

  950. all people,

  951. not just a

  952. couple of

  953. their leaders,

  954. on all of

  955. God's people

  956. and read

  957. what God

  958. had said

  959. through the

  960. prophet

  961. Ezekiel

  962. of that

  963. time to

  964. come.

  965. It's on

  966. the board.

  967. He said

  968. this,

  969. I will put

  970. my Spirit

  971. within you

  972. and cause

  973. you to

  974. walk in

  975. my statutes

  976. and be

  977. careful to

  978. obey my

  979. rules.

  980. Now Jesus

  981. stands up at

  982. the climax of

  983. the festival

  984. as the

  985. water is

  986. being carried

  987. up the

  988. streets of

  989. Jerusalem.

  990. He cries

  991. out that

  992. He is

  993. the giver

  994. of the

  995. true

  996. living

  997. water,

  998. the Holy

  999. Spirit.

  1000. The temple

  1001. is there

  1002. looming

  1003. above Him

  1004. as He

  1005. says these

  1006. words and

  1007. He declares

  1008. that this

  1009. building here,

  1010. that's no

  1011. longer going

  1012. to be the

  1013. place where

  1014. God dwells.

  1015. Not in the

  1016. building anymore,

  1017. no, in

  1018. His people.

  1019. God will

  1020. dwell in

  1021. all those

  1022. who believe

  1023. in Jesus

  1024. through His

  1025. Holy Spirit.

  1026. Jesus is

  1027. the giver

  1028. of the

  1029. Spirit and

  1030. He calls

  1031. to you

  1032. and to

  1033. I today

  1034. to come

  1035. and drink

  1036. of the

  1037. Spirit

  1038. to satisfy

  1039. our thirst

  1040. forever.

  1041. You will

  1042. know His

  1043. power and

  1044. presence like

  1045. a river

  1046. flowing from

  1047. within you.

  1048. forever.

  1049. So two

  1050. questions.

  1051. Number one,

  1052. have you

  1053. received the

  1054. gift of the

  1055. Holy Spirit

  1056. from Jesus

  1057. Christ?

  1058. Everywhere

  1059. else you

  1060. turn to

  1061. will never

  1062. satisfy

  1063. your thirsty

  1064. soul.

  1065. Second

  1066. question,

  1067. if you have

  1068. already received

  1069. Him,

  1070. are you

  1071. drinking

  1072. deeply

  1073. from that

  1074. river of

  1075. life?

  1076. His

  1077. help,

  1078. comfort,

  1079. and power

  1080. are yours

  1081. moment

  1082. by moment

  1083. if you

  1084. would keep

  1085. drinking

  1086. of Him.

  1087. To finish,

  1088. we have

  1089. heard plenty

  1090. of opinions

  1091. about who

  1092. Jesus is

  1093. today.

  1094. And we've

  1095. listened to

  1096. Jesus tell us

  1097. exactly who

  1098. He is.

  1099. And the

  1100. question is

  1101. now,

  1102. how will the

  1103. people of

  1104. Jerusalem

  1105. respond to

  1106. Him?

  1107. Well,

  1108. in the

  1109. last part

  1110. of John's

  1111. recount of

  1112. the festival,

  1113. we hear

  1114. three different

  1115. responses to

  1116. Jesus.

  1117. In verse

  1118. 45,

  1119. we have the

  1120. temple guards

  1121. who were

  1122. ordered to

  1123. arrest Jesus,

  1124. but they

  1125. arrive back

  1126. empty-handed.

  1127. And when the

  1128. Pharisees ask,

  1129. why didn't

  1130. you bring

  1131. Him in,

  1132. like we

  1133. asked you to

  1134. do,

  1135. they reply

  1136. in verse

  1137. 46,

  1138. no one

  1139. ever spoke

  1140. the way

  1141. this man

  1142. does.

  1143. Wow.

  1144. They are

  1145. amazed

  1146. by Jesus.

  1147. But don't

  1148. be like

  1149. the guards.

  1150. That's

  1151. as far

  1152. as it

  1153. goes for

  1154. them.

  1155. They're

  1156. just amazed

  1157. by Him.

  1158. But they

  1159. show no

  1160. signs

  1161. of true

  1162. belief.

  1163. We need

  1164. to really

  1165. watch out

  1166. here,

  1167. because many

  1168. people confuse

  1169. admiration

  1170. of Jesus

  1171. with true

  1172. belief in

  1173. Jesus.

  1174. They are

  1175. not the

  1176. same thing.

  1177. You cannot

  1178. admire Jesus

  1179. from a

  1180. distance and

  1181. presume that

  1182. you're safe

  1183. with Him.

  1184. No.

  1185. He calls

  1186. to receive

  1187. Him as

  1188. Lord,

  1189. as

  1190. Savior.

  1191. You cannot

  1192. sit on the

  1193. fence with

  1194. Jesus.

  1195. Either you

  1196. believe

  1197. or you

  1198. don't.

  1199. Secondly,

  1200. don't be like

  1201. the Pharisees.

  1202. They just

  1203. reject

  1204. Jesus

  1205. outright.

  1206. they want

  1207. rid of

  1208. Him as

  1209. soon as

  1210. possible.

  1211. They are

  1212. sure they

  1213. don't need

  1214. Jesus to

  1215. live a

  1216. fulfilled

  1217. life or

  1218. to get

  1219. to heaven.

  1220. And after

  1221. everything that

  1222. you have

  1223. seen of

  1224. Jesus'

  1225. life,

  1226. His death,

  1227. His

  1228. resurrection,

  1229. don't be

  1230. like the

  1231. Pharisees who

  1232. refused to

  1233. accept the

  1234. evidence.

  1235. They didn't

  1236. want Jesus.

  1237. But there

  1238. is a third

  1239. response.

  1240. Because in

  1241. verse 51,

  1242. Nicodemus

  1243. stands up

  1244. for Jesus.

  1245. He risks

  1246. his status

  1247. as a

  1248. leader in

  1249. the Jewish

  1250. parliament

  1251. to defend

  1252. Jesus before

  1253. the whole

  1254. court.

  1255. And he

  1256. later,

  1257. a couple

  1258. chapters later

  1259. in John,

  1260. he actually

  1261. appears at

  1262. the cross

  1263. where Jesus

  1264. died,

  1265. taking down

  1266. Jesus'

  1267. body and

  1268. preparing it

  1269. for burial.

  1270. I think we

  1271. can surmise

  1272. that Nicodemus

  1273. really did

  1274. believe Jesus

  1275. was who

  1276. he said

  1277. he was.

  1278. Nicodemus

  1279. took Jesus

  1280. at his

  1281. word and

  1282. believed.

  1283. No sitting

  1284. on the

  1285. fence,

  1286. no pushing

  1287. him away.

  1288. he believed

  1289. Jesus was

  1290. the only

  1291. saviour

  1292. from sin.

  1293. So what's

  1294. your response

  1295. to Jesus?

  1296. Everyone

  1297. has a

  1298. different

  1299. opinion

  1300. about who

  1301. Jesus is.

  1302. But what

  1303. do you

  1304. say?

  1305. Will you

  1306. take him

  1307. at his

  1308. word?

  1309. No.

  1310. No.

  1311. No.

  1312. No.

  1313. No.

  1314. No.

  1315. No.

  1316. No.

  1317. No.

  1318. No.

  1319. No.

  1320. No.

  1321. No.

  1322. No.

  1323. No.

  1324. No.

  1325. No.

  1326. No.

  1327. No.

  1328. No.

  1329. No.

  1330. No.

  1331. No.

  1332. No.

  1333. No.

  1334. No.

  1335. No.

  1336. No.

  1337. No.

  1338. No.

  1339. No.

  1340. No.

  1341. No.

  1342. No.

  1343. No.

  1344. No.

  1345. No.

  1346. No.

  1347. No.

  1348. No.

  1349. No.

  1350. No.

  1351. No.

  1352. No.

  1353. No.

  1354. No.

1355. Will you believe that he is the giver of the Spirit?

1356. And drink deeply from that river of living water every day.

1357. Let's finish with Jesus' own words.

1358. Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.

1359. Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said,

1360. rivers of living water will flow from within them.

1361. Let's take a moment now to pray.

1362. I'm going to leave a couple of moments for you to make your own response to Jesus in your heart.

1363. Let's take a moment now to pray.

1364. Your power knows no bounds.

1365. You created this whole universe and sustain it by the power of your word.

1366. You are God the Son eternal.

1367. And yet you came down to wear our skin.

1368. You bore the burden of our sin on the cross and died for us there.

1369. You rose again, defeating our death.

1370. We thank you that you gave us the very best you could give.

1371. God's Holy Spirit living in us.

  1372. What a wonder.

  1373. What a mystery.

1374. What an awesome privilege to be the dwelling place of God.

1375. Let us not tire of the glory of this.

1376. Let us drink deeply from the fountain of living water each day.

1377. For your glory and our good.

  1378. Amen.
