  2. Again, you're all very welcome this morning.

  3. And as we gather, we open up God's Word and we hear it explained and preached.

  4. And we look forward to Johnny coming in a moment to preach from the Word to our hearts and to our souls.

  5. And we're going to be looking this morning, continuing our series in the Gospel of John.

  6. We're going to be looking at chapter 9.

  7. So we're going to read verses 1 to 12.

  8. And then we're going to jump down and read 35 to 41.

  9. So John chapter 9, verses 1 to 12 and then 35 to 41.

    John 9:1–12

  10. John chapter 9.

    John 9 chapter mention

  11. As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.

  12. And his disciples asked him,

  13. Rabbi, who sinned?

  14. This man or his parents that he was born blind?

  15. Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus.

  16. But this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

  17. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me.

  18. Night is coming when no one can work.

  19. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

  20. After saying this, he spat on the ground.

  21. He made some mud with the saliva.

  22. And he put it on the man's eyes.

  23. Go, he told him.

  24. Wash in the pool of Siloam.

  25. This word means sent.

  26. So the man went and he washed.

  27. He came home seen.

  28. His neighbors, no one who had formerly seen him begging, asked,

  29. Isn't this the man who used to sit and beg?

  30. Some claimed that he was.

  31. Others said, no, he only looks like him.

  32. But he himself insisted, I am the man.

  33. Now then, now how then were your eyes open, they asked.

  34. He replied, the man they called Jesus.

  35. He made some mud and he put it on my eyes.

  36. He told me, go to Siloam and wash.

  37. So I went and washed and then I could see.

  38. Where is this man, they asked him.

  39. I don't know, he said.

  40. Verse 35.

  41. Jesus heard that they had thrown him, that's the blind man who had been healed, out.

  42. And when he found him, he said, do you believe in the Son of Man?

  43. Who is he, sir, the man asked.

  44. Tell me so that I may believe in him.

  45. Jesus said, you have now seen him.

  46. In fact, he is the one speaking with you.

  47. Then the man said, Lord, I believe.

  48. And he worshipped him.

  49. Jesus said, for judgment I have come into this world,

  50. so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.

  51. Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and they asked, what?

  52. Are we blind too?

  53. Well, Jesus said, if you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin.

  54. But now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.

  55. Good morning.

  56. Good morning.

  57. Nice to see you.

  58. Thank you, Ralph, for leading and thanks to the music team as well.

  59. And we do appreciate you so much.

  60. So thank you for helping us this morning and for all who do week by week.

  61. Let's keep our Bibles open.

  62. We're going to look at John 9 together.

  63. Let's pray.

  64. Father God, by the power of your spirit,

  65. open our eyes

  66. that we may see wonderful truths and treasures in your word.

  67. May we see Jesus clearly

  68. in all his beauty and wonder.

  69. And may we be satisfied

  70. in him alone.

  71. Help us, we pray.

  72. Amen.

  73. Well, when I've been abroad in more tropical climates,

  74. something startling happens at night.

  75. It may have been your experience too.

  76. When you turn on the light,

  77. the whole room moves.

  78. Great moths come out and they fly towards the light.

  79. And those dirty cockroaches,

  80. they scurry into the darkness.

  81. You see, light is not neutral.

  82. It either attracts or it repels.

  83. Look at verse 5.

  84. See what Jesus says?

  85. While I am in the world,

  86. I am the light of the world.

  87. Jesus is saying,

  88. I've come to shine my light.

  89. I have come to be the light in the darkness.

  90. And Jesus is not neutral.

  91. As his light shines,

  92. we're either attracted to him

  93. or we are repelled by him.

  94. Let's see how this is true.

  95. First, we're going to look at the shining of the light.

  96. Shining the light.

  97. In our text,

  98. John records for us an extraordinary miracle.

  99. A blind man receives his sight.

  100. But you'll know through our studies

  101. that in John's gospel,

  102. the miracles are called signs.

  103. So the miracle,

  104. or the sign,

  105. points beyond itself to something else.

  106. In this case,

  107. and here's a summary,

  108. Jesus gives a blind man physical sight

  109. to show us that he has come to give us

  110. spiritual sight.

  111. He gives a blind man physical sight.

  112. That's the miracle.

  113. The sign is pointing to the fact

  114. that Jesus has come to give us

  115. spiritual sight.

  116. Look at verse 1.

  117. As he went along,

  118. he saw a blind man from birth.

  119. His disciples asked him,

  120. Teacher,

  121. who sinned?

  122. This man?

  123. Or his parents?

  124. That he was born blind?

  125. To them,

  126. there was only one logical conclusion.

  127. Either his parents had done something

  128. terribly wrong in their life,

  129. and God is punishing them

  130. for some sin in their life,

  131. and their son is born blind.

  132. Or,

  133. maybe God knew that

  134. as the man grew older,

  135. he would do some terrible things

  136. in his life,

  137. and so,

  138. he was punished with blindness

  139. before he was even born.

  140. Those are their thinkings.

  141. What is it, Jesus?

  142. It must be one or the other.

  143. Who sinned?

  144. Now, many people think like that.

  145. If everything I do is going well,

  146. then I must have done something good.

  147. God is blessing me.

  148. But if I'm suffering in some way,

  149. I must have done something wrong.

  150. God is punishing me.

  151. Now, it's a common thought.

  152. We can think like that.

  153. But it's a terrible thought,

  154. because it's not true.

  155. Look at Jesus' response,

  156. verse 3.

  157. Neither this man

  158. nor his parents

  159. sinned.

  160. Yes,

  161. in a sense,

  162. all the struggle

  163. and all the suffering

  164. in the world

  165. is a result of the fall.

  166. But we cannot draw

  167. a direct line

  168. from our suffering

  169. to a particular sin

  170. and say,

  171. that was it.

  172. No, Jesus says,

  173. neither this man

  174. nor his parents

  175. sinned.

  176. But this happened.

  177. The man's blindness happened

  178. so that the works of God

  179. might be displayed

  180. in him.

  181. And what were the works

  182. that were going to be displayed

  183. through this blind man?

  184. Well,

  185. through the healing

  186. of the blind man,

  187. Jesus was going to shine

  188. his light

  189. to show his power

  190. and to show

  191. our spiritual condition.

  192. So let's look

  193. at this miracle

  194. in a little bit

  195. more detail.

  196. First,

  197. born blind.

  198. Look at verse 1 again.

  199. As Jesus went along,

  200. he saw a man

  201. blind

  202. from birth.

  203. So he never,

  204. ever

  205. had experienced sight.

  206. Imagine,

  207. he never got to see

  208. his family.

  209. He could smell

  210. a flower,

  211. but he never was able

  212. to admire its beauty.

  213. He could feel

  214. the sunshine

  215. beating down on him,

  216. but he was never able

  217. to gaze

  218. at a sunset.

  219. He was blind

  220. from birth.

  221. Darkness.

  222. But yet,

  223. born blind

  224. and given sight.

  225. Jump down

  226. to verse 6.

  227. After saying this,

  228. after this discussion

  229. with his disciples,

  230. Jesus spat

  231. on the ground,

  232. made some mud

  233. with the saliva

  234. and put it

  235. on the man's eyes.

  236. Now,

  237. what a strange

  238. thing to do.

  239. We know from

  240. John chapter 5

    John 5 chapter mention

  241. that Jesus

  242. could have simply

  243. just spoken a word

  244. and healed him

  245. straight away,

  246. just as he did.

  247. Do you remember

  248. to the man

  249. who couldn't walk

  250. by the pool?

  251. He just said to him,

  252. pick up your mat

  253. and walk.

  254. Well,

  255. why didn't he say

  256. the exact same thing

  257. to the blind man?

  258. Your eyes are open,

  259. you can see.

  260. But no,

  261. Jesus,

  262. look at what it says

  263. there in verse 6,

  264. he made mud.

  265. He spits

  266. on the ground

  267. and then he makes

  268. a paste

  269. of mud

  270. and then he takes it

  271. and he presses it

  272. into the man's eyes.

  273. Why would he do that?

  274. Well,

  275. I think it's like creation,

  276. isn't it?

  277. Just as God

  278. formed and

  279. shaped

  280. the world

  281. and just as God

  282. in the very beginning

  283. of creation

  284. spoke light

  285. into the darkness,

  286. so Jesus

  287. spits

  288. and he makes mud

  289. and he forms

  290. and shapes

  291. that mud

  292. and he

  293. pastes it

  294. into the man's eyes

  295. and he speaks

  296. light into the darkness,

  297. verse 7.

  298. Go,

  299. he told him.

  300. Wash

  301. in the pool of Siloam.

  302. So the man

  303. went,

  304. washed

  305. and he came

  306. home seeing.

  307. You see,

  308. through the sign,

  309. through this miracle,

  310. Jesus is shining

  311. a light

  312. on our

  313. condition.

  314. This man

  315. didn't lose

  316. his sight

  317. or become

  318. blind over time.

  319. He never had sight.

  320. He was born blind

  321. and in the same way

  322. we have been

  323. born blind

  324. to who Jesus

  325. is

  326. and our need

  327. of him.

  328. And the only way

  329. we're ever going

  330. to see

  331. who Jesus

  332. is,

  333. is if he does

  334. a creation

  335. work

  336. in our life.

  337. He must

  338. create

  339. sight.

  340. He must

  341. give sight

  342. where there

  343. never was

  344. any sight.

  345. And just as

  346. the blind man

  347. couldn't give

  348. himself

  349. sight,

  350. so we can

  351. never make

  352. ourselves

  353. see our

  354. need of Jesus.

  355. Jesus must

  356. do a miracle,

  357. a new

  358. creation

  359. work

  360. in our

  361. life.

  362. So Jesus

  363. does a sign

  364. shining his

  365. light

  366. on our

  367. true

  368. condition.

  369. So how do we

  370. respond

  371. to this

  372. shining light?

  373. second,

  374. remaining in

  375. darkness.

  376. This poor

  377. man,

  378. instead of

  379. being able

  380. to enjoy

  381. this new

  382. sight and

  383. go to

  384. different places

  385. and explore

  386. and look,

  387. this poor

  388. man is

  389. thrown into

  390. like a

  391. courtroom.

  392. He's having

  393. to defend

  394. and prove

  395. that he

  396. does have

  397. sight.

  398. it seems

  399. that no

  400. one wants

  401. to believe

  402. what happened

  403. to him.

  404. Look at

  405. verse 8.

  406. His neighbours

  407. and those

  408. who had

  409. formerly

  410. seen him

  411. begging

  412. asked,

  413. isn't this

  414. the man

  415. who used

  416. to sit

  417. and beg?

  418. Some

  419. claimed,

  420. yes,

  421. that's the

  422. man.

  423. Others

  424. said,

  425. no,

  426. no,

  427. it isn't.

  428. You've

  429. got it

  430. all wrong.

  431. He only

  432. looks like

  433. him.

  434. But he

  435. himself

  436. insisted,

  437. I am

  438. the man.

  439. Hello,

  440. everyone.

  441. Have you

  442. ever thought

  443. of asking

  444. me?

  445. Well,

  446. how did

  447. you get

  448. to see?

  449. Well,

  450. the man

  451. they called

  452. Jesus,

  453. he made

  454. mud and

  455. he put

  456. it on

  457. my eyes

  458. and I

  459. went and

  460. washed

  461. and I

  462. could see.

  463. Why don't

  464. you believe

  465. me?

  466. Well,

  467. if the

  468. neighbours

  469. weren't bad

  470. enough,

  471. next up

  472. were the

  473. Pharisees.

  474. Verse 15.

  475. Therefore,

  476. the Pharisees

  477. also asked

  478. him how

  479. he had

  480. received

  481. his sight.

  482. Well,

  483. he put

  484. mud on

  485. my eyes

  486. and I

  487. washed

  488. and now

  489. I can

  490. see.

  491. But they're

  492. not convinced.

  493. Verse 18.

  494. They still

  495. did not

  496. believe that

  497. he had

  498. been blind

  499. and that

  500. he had

  501. received

  502. his sight

  503. until they

  504. sent for

  505. the man's

  506. parents.

  507. So the

  508. parents are

  509. called in.

  510. Is this

  511. your son?

  512. They asked.

  513. Is this

  514. the one

  515. who you

  516. say was

  517. born blind?

  518. How is it

  519. now that

  520. he can

  521. see?

  522. I mean,

  523. don't be so

  524. ridiculous.

  525. Blind

  526. and now

  527. seeing.

  528. We know

  529. he is our

  530. son,

  531. the parents

  532. answered.

  533. And we

  534. know he

  535. was born

  536. blind,

  537. but how

  538. he can

  539. see now

  540. or who

  541. opened

  542. his eyes,

  543. we don't

  544. know.

  545. Ask him.

  546. Now why

  547. is it

  548. that they

  549. are having

  550. such a

  551. hard time

  552. believing

  553. what's

  554. happened?

  555. Well you

  556. see,

  557. if the

  558. miracle is

  559. true,

  560. if what

  561. the man

  562. was saying

  563. was true,

  564. that means

  565. Jesus is

  566. God and

  567. the Pharisees

  568. would have

  569. to accept

  570. that and

  571. believe in

  572. Jesus.

  573. But rather

  574. than believe

  575. the truth

  576. about Jesus,

  577. they now

  578. turned to

  579. try to

  580. discredit

  581. Jesus.

  582. Verse 24.

  583. A second

  584. time they

  585. summoned the

  586. man who

  587. had been

  588. blind.

  589. Give glory

  590. to God by

  591. telling the

  592. truth,

  593. they said.

  594. We know

  595. this man

  596. is a

  597. sinner.

  598. sinner.

  599. In other

  600. words,

  601. just stop

  602. all your

  603. lies and

  604. just say

  605. Jesus is

  606. a sinner.

  607. He replied

  608. whether he

  609. is a sinner

  610. or not,

  611. I don't

  612. know.

  613. But one

  614. thing I

  615. do know,

  616. I was

  617. blind,

  618. but now

  619. I see.

  620. Then they

  621. asked him,

  622. what did

  623. he do

  624. to you?

  625. How did

  626. he open

  627. your eyes?

  628. He

  629. answered,

  630. I've

  631. told you

  632. and you

  633. will not

  634. listen.

  635. Do you

  636. want to

  637. become his

  638. disciples too?

  639. Skip down

  640. to verse

  641. 32.

  642. Nobody,

  643. this is the

  644. man speaking

  645. again,

  646. nobody has

  647. ever heard

  648. of opening

  649. the eyes

  650. of a man

  651. born blind.

  652. If this

  653. man were

  654. not from

  655. God,

  656. he could

  657. do

  658. nothing.

  659. In other

  660. words,

  661. I can

  662. now see,

  663. so this

  664. man must

  665. be from

  666. God.

  667. To this

  668. they replied,

  669. you were

  670. steeped in

  671. sin at

  672. birth,

  673. how dare

  674. you lecture

  675. us?

  676. And they

  677. threw him

  678. out.

  679. Why is

  680. there such

  681. hostility?

  682. And why

  683. is there

  684. such

  685. unbelief?

  686. well,

  687. it seems

  688. that these

  689. Pharisees

  690. are blinded

  691. by pride.

  692. You see,

  693. to acknowledge

  694. what Jesus

  695. has done

  696. and all

  697. that he's

  698. been saying

  699. means,

  700. well,

  701. we must

  702. believe that

  703. he's God.

  704. And if

  705. Jesus is

  706. God,

  707. then I

  708. must submit

  709. my life to

  710. him,

  711. I must

  712. turn and

  713. trust him.

  714. But pride

  715. gets in the

  716. way.

  717. our pride

  718. says,

  719. I don't

  720. need

  721. Jesus.

  722. I can

  723. live my

  724. own way.

  725. Isn't

  726. that how

  727. often we

  728. can be?

  729. Jesus is

  730. saying,

  731. come to

  732. me,

  733. see who

  734. I am.

  735. I am

  736. God,

  737. I have

  738. come to

  739. bring life

  740. in all

  741. its

  742. fullness.

  743. Believe

  744. me,

  745. walk with

  746. me.

  747. But

  748. pride,

  749. pride says,

  750. no,

  751. I want

  752. to do

  753. it my

  754. way.

  755. I've

  756. got my

  757. own way

  758. of living.

  759. I have

  760. my own

  761. truth.

  762. You see,

  763. as Jesus

  764. turns the

  765. light on,

  766. as Jesus

  767. comes in

  768. as the

  769. light into

  770. the world,

  771. they remain

  772. in darkness.

  773. They're

  774. repelled

  775. by Jesus.

  776. When

  777. confronted

  778. with who

  779. he is,

  780. they scurry

  781. away deeper

  782. into the

  783. darkness.

  784. But there's

  785. another

  786. response.

  787. Not just

  788. those who

  789. remain in

  790. darkness,

  791. but those

  792. who are

  793. attracted

  794. to Jesus.

  795. You see,

  796. while the

  797. Pharisees

  798. hide from

  799. the light,

  800. the former

  801. blind man

  802. is attracted

  803. to the

  804. light.

  805. And it

  806. seems all

  807. the questioning

  808. that he's

  809. been facing

  810. has caused

  811. him to

  812. question

  813. himself.

  814. Who is

  815. this person?

  816. And he's

  817. being drawn

  818. towards him

  819. gradually.

  820. Look at the

  821. progression of

  822. the man.

  823. Let's go

  824. back to

  825. verse 11.

  826. The

  827. neighbours

  828. have asked,

  829. who opened

  830. your eyes?

  831. Verse 11,

  832. the man

  833. they call

  834. Jesus.

  835. Jesus.

  836. He doesn't

  837. know who

  838. Jesus is.

  839. He's just

  840. that man,

  841. that person

  842. that is

  843. called

  844. Jesus.

  845. That's all

  846. he knows

  847. him as.

  848. But look

  849. what happens

  850. later on.

  851. Verse 17,

  852. the Pharisees

  853. turned again

  854. to the

  855. blind man.

  856. What have

  857. you to say

  858. about him?

  859. It was

  860. your eyes

  861. he opened.

  862. The man

  863. replied,

  864. he is

  865. a prophet.

  866. So he's

  867. no longer

  868. just that

  869. man called

  870. Jesus.

  871. He's

  872. thought about

  873. it and

  874. come to

  875. the conclusion

  876. that he's

  877. something bigger,

  878. he's more

  879. important.

  880. He must

  881. be a

  882. prophet.

  883. Verse 31,

  884. again as

  885. he speaks

  886. back to

  887. the Pharisees,

  888. we know

  889. that God

  890. does not

  891. listen to

  892. sinners.

  893. God

  894. listens to

  895. the godly

  896. person who

  897. does his

  898. will.

  899. Nobody has

  900. ever heard

  901. of opening

  902. the eyes

  903. of a man

  904. born blind.

  905. If this

  906. man were

  907. not from

  908. God,

  909. he could

  910. do

  911. nothing.

  912. He's

  913. come to

  914. the clear

  915. conclusion

  916. that this

  917. man,

  918. Jesus,

  919. is a

  920. prophet

  921. and he

  922. is not

  923. a sinner.

  924. He must

  925. be

  926. God.

  927. God.

  928. You see,

  929. the more

  930. light that

  931. this man

  932. receives,

  933. the closer

  934. he is drawn

  935. towards the

  936. light.

  937. The more

  938. he understands

  939. of Jesus,

  940. the more

  941. he is ready

  942. to believe

  943. in Jesus.

  944. Verse 35,

  945. Jesus had

  946. heard that

  947. they had

  948. thrown him

  949. out.

  950. And when

  951. Jesus found

  952. him, he

  953. said,

  954. do you

  955. believe in

  956. the son

  957. of man?

  958. Jesus is

  959. referring to

  960. himself here

  961. as the one

  962. with absolute

  963. power and

  964. supreme authority.

  965. Do you

  966. believe in

  967. the son

  968. of man?

  969. Now, the

  970. man's answer

  971. is remarkable.

  972. Verse 36,

  973. who is he,

  974. sir?

  975. The man

  976. asked.

  977. Tell me

  978. so that I

  979. may believe

  980. in him.

  981. Jesus said,

  982. you have

  983. now seen

  984. him.

  985. In fact,

  986. he is the

  987. one speaking

  988. with you.

  989. And the

  990. man said,

  991. Lord,

  992. I believe.

  993. And he

  994. worshipped

  995. him.

  996. Yes, he

  997. sees Jesus

  998. physically for

  999. the first

  1000. time.

  1001. But more

  1002. than that,

  1003. this former

  1004. blind man

  1005. has come

  1006. to see his

  1007. need of

  1008. Jesus and

  1009. he believes

  1010. in him.

  1011. He

  1012. worships.

  1013. Literally,

  1014. he bows

  1015. down in

  1016. honour,

  1017. and

  1018. submission

  1019. as he

  1020. sees the

  1021. greatness

  1022. and the

  1023. glory of

  1024. who Jesus

  1025. is.

  1026. How did

  1027. this happen?

  1028. How did

  1029. this change

  1030. come about

  1031. in this

  1032. man's

  1033. life?

  1034. Well,

  1035. the man

  1036. was enabled

  1037. to see.

  1038. Look at

  1039. verse 35.

  1040. Jesus

  1041. found

  1042. him.

  1043. Jesus

  1044. went

  1045. searching

  1046. him out.

  1047. The

  1048. light of

  1049. Jesus

  1050. had shone

  1051. into the

  1052. darkness

  1053. of his

  1054. life.

  1055. And as

  1056. he responded

  1057. to the

  1058. light,

  1059. and as

  1060. the light

  1061. got brighter,

  1062. not only

  1063. was his

  1064. physical

  1065. eyes

  1066. opened,

  1067. but something

  1068. greater,

  1069. his

  1070. spiritual

  1071. eyes have

  1072. been opened.

  1073. He's come

  1074. to see

  1075. his need

  1076. of Jesus.

  1077. You see,

  1078. that's what

  1079. Jesus does.

  1080. He gives

  1081. sight

  1082. where there

  1083. was no

  1084. sight.

  1085. So what

  1086. does that

  1087. all mean

  1088. for us?

  1089. Well,

  1090. Jesus

  1091. summarizes

  1092. his message

  1093. like this.

  1094. Look at

  1095. verse 39.

  1096. Jesus

  1097. said,

  1098. for

  1099. judgment

  1100. I have

  1101. come

  1102. into

  1103. this

  1104. world,

  1105. so that

  1106. the blind

  1107. will see,

  1108. and those

  1109. who see

  1110. will become

  1111. blind.

  1112. It's

  1113. very simple

  1114. what Jesus

  1115. is saying.

  1116. I've

  1117. summarized it

  1118. like this,

  1119. you can see it

  1120. on the screen.

  1121. First,

  1122. there are

  1123. those who

  1124. know they

  1125. are blind,

  1126. and therefore

  1127. will see.

  1128. Those who

  1129. know that

  1130. they are

  1131. born spiritually

  1132. blind,

  1133. and that

  1134. without Jesus

  1135. they're lost,

  1136. they will be

  1137. given sight.

  1138. Jesus will

  1139. open up our

  1140. eyes and

  1141. enable us to

  1142. believe and

  1143. to worship

  1144. him.

  1145. But

  1146. second,

  1147. there are

  1148. those who

  1149. think they

  1150. can see,

  1151. but they're

  1152. actually blind.

  1153. Those who

  1154. think they're

  1155. enlightened,

  1156. and have the

  1157. knowledge,

  1158. and know

  1159. and think

  1160. that their

  1161. way is

  1162. right.

  1163. Jesus

  1164. says they

  1165. will become

  1166. blind.

  1167. Jesus

  1168. will shine

  1169. his light,

  1170. but they

  1171. will remain

  1172. in darkness.

  1173. verse 40,

  1174. some

  1175. Pharisees

  1176. who were

  1177. with him

  1178. heard him

  1179. say this

  1180. and asked,

  1181. what are

  1182. we blind

  1183. to?

  1184. Are you

  1185. talking about

  1186. us?

  1187. Jesus said,

  1188. if you

  1189. were blind,

  1190. you would

  1191. not be

  1192. guilty of

  1193. sin.

  1194. But now

  1195. that you

  1196. claim you

  1197. can see,

  1198. your guilt

  1199. remains.

  1200. you see,

  1201. he's saying,

  1202. look,

  1203. if you

  1204. knew how

  1205. spiritually

  1206. blind you

  1207. are,

  1208. if you

  1209. were able

  1210. to accept

  1211. your

  1212. lostness,

  1213. you would

  1214. come to

  1215. me.

  1216. But if you

  1217. insist on

  1218. going it

  1219. alone,

  1220. you will

  1221. live and

  1222. remain in

  1223. your guilt

  1224. and in

  1225. your shame,

  1226. and you

  1227. will face

  1228. judgment.

  1229. You see,

  1230. Jesus has

  1231. come to

  1232. shine his

  1233. light into

  1234. the darkness

  1235. of this

  1236. world.

  1237. Let's just

  1238. bring it

  1239. together,

  1240. just three

  1241. things to

  1242. close with.

  1243. If we

  1244. welcome the

  1245. light that

  1246. Jesus is

  1247. shining in

  1248. our life,

  1249. three things.

  1250. First,

  1251. you will

  1252. see your

  1253. sin,

  1254. in a

  1255. new

  1256. light.

  1257. You will

  1258. see how

  1259. utterly

  1260. blind and

  1261. lost you

  1262. are.

  1263. It's not

  1264. a little

  1265. glimpse of

  1266. light that

  1267. gives you

  1268. a little

  1269. way of

  1270. finding your

  1271. way out.

  1272. No,

  1273. you are

  1274. utterly

  1275. blind and

  1276. in desperate

  1277. need for

  1278. Jesus.

  1279. Like the

  1280. man in

  1281. this account,

  1282. you will

  1283. say,

  1284. I am

  1285. blind.

  1286. I need

  1287. sight.

  1288. And when

  1289. you do,

  1290. the light

  1291. of Jesus

  1292. will shine

  1293. his beauty

  1294. and his

  1295. magnificence

  1296. towards us.

  1297. He will

  1298. become more

  1299. attractive to

  1300. you.

  1301. And you

  1302. will run

  1303. to him

  1304. and you

  1305. will receive

  1306. from him

  1307. forgiveness

  1308. for all

  1309. your sin.

  1310. You will

  1311. become closer

  1312. to him

  1313. and your

  1314. relationship

  1315. to him

  1316. will deepen

  1317. and you

  1318. will become

  1319. more like

  1320. him.

  1321. You will

  1322. see your

  1323. sin in a

  1324. new light.

  1325. You will

  1326. see how

  1327. desperately

  1328. you need

  1329. Jesus.

  1330. But second,

  1331. you will

  1332. see yourself

  1333. in a new

  1334. light.

  1335. Go back

  1336. to chapter

  1337. 8,

  1338. verse 12.

  1339. 12.

  1340. You will

  1341. begin to

  1342. see yourself

  1343. in a new

  1344. light.

  1345. Chapter 8,

  1346. verse 12.

  1347. when Jesus

  1348. spoke again

  1349. to the

  1350. people,

  1351. he said,

  1352. I am

  1353. the light

  1354. of the

  1355. world.

  1356. Whoever

  1357. follows me

  1358. will never

  1359. walk in

  1360. darkness,

  1361. but will

  1362. have the

  1363. light

  1364. of life.

  1365. Jesus

  1366. is the

  1367. one who

  1368. satisfies

  1369. and fulfills.

  1370. He is the

  1371. one who

  1372. gives us

  1373. all that we

  1374. need.

  1375. He takes

  1376. us out

  1377. of darkness

  1378. and puts

  1379. us on a

  1380. path of

  1381. light that

  1382. is only

  1383. right and

  1384. best and

  1385. good for

  1386. us.

  1387. You will

  1388. see yourself

  1389. in a new

  1390. way.

  1391. And third,

  1392. you will

  1393. see your

  1394. suffering in

  1395. a new

  1396. light.

  1397. Just go

  1398. back with

  1399. me to

  1400. chapter 9

  1401. and verse

  1402. 3.

  1403. You will

  1404. see your

  1405. suffering in

  1406. a new

  1407. light.

  1408. You see,

  1409. this man,

  1410. this blind

  1411. man was

  1412. suffering.

  1413. He was

  1414. blind for

  1415. years.

  1416. And I'm

  1417. sure the

  1418. question arose

  1419. in his

  1420. mind many,

  1421. many times.

  1422. Why?

  1423. Why this

  1424. suffering?

  1425. Why am I

  1426. having to

  1427. live with

  1428. this?

  1429. suffering?

  1430. And I

  1431. know that

  1432. some of

  1433. you here

  1434. today are

  1435. going through

  1436. your own

  1437. struggles and

  1438. facing your

  1439. own suffering.

  1440. And the

  1441. question comes

  1442. to mind,

  1443. why?

  1444. Why is this

  1445. happening to

  1446. me?

  1447. What's it

  1448. all for?

  1449. well, in

  1450. some ways,

  1451. there are

  1452. no answers.

  1453. There's a

  1454. mystery to

  1455. our

  1456. suffering.

  1457. We don't

  1458. always understand

  1459. why God

  1460. allows and

  1461. permits these

  1462. things to

  1463. happen in

  1464. our life.

  1465. But look at

  1466. verse 3,

  1467. because I

  1468. think there

  1469. is a

  1470. beginning of

  1471. an answer.

  1472. Look what he

  1473. says.

  1474. Jesus says,

  1475. neither this

  1476. man nor

  1477. his parents

  1478. sinned.

  1479. But this

  1480. happened.

  1481. This

  1482. suffering

  1483. happened so

  1484. that the

  1485. works of

  1486. God might

  1487. be displayed

  1488. in him.

  1489. Do you

  1490. believe and

  1491. trust that

  1492. God has his

  1493. plans and

  1494. purposes for

  1495. your life?

  1496. And that

  1497. he is

  1498. working

  1499. something

  1500. good in

  1501. and through

  1502. you that

  1503. you never

  1504. thought

  1505. possible

  1506. before.

  1507. If you

  1508. find that

  1509. hard to

  1510. work through,

  1511. think of

  1512. Jesus on

  1513. the cross,

  1514. the truly

  1515. innocent

  1516. man who

  1517. suffered,

  1518. who was

  1519. crucified,

  1520. who was

  1521. put to

  1522. death,

  1523. who suffered

  1524. hell.

  1525. Why did

  1526. this happen?

  1527. Why did

  1528. that suffering

  1529. happen?

  1530. so that

  1531. the works

  1532. of God

  1533. might be

  1534. displayed

  1535. through

  1536. Christ,

  1537. that people

  1538. might come

  1539. to salvation.

  1540. Now I

  1541. think that

  1542. helps us

  1543. and enables

  1544. us to

  1545. see our

  1546. suffering in

  1547. a new

  1548. light.

  1549. That God

  1550. would work

  1551. his power

  1552. in you.

  1553. maybe it's

  1554. a work

  1555. in you

  1556. that he

  1557. does so

  1558. that you

  1559. are drawn

  1560. closer and

  1561. deeper in

  1562. relationship

  1563. with him.

  1564. Maybe it's

  1565. so that you

  1566. can testify

  1567. to the

  1568. faithfulness and

  1569. goodness of

  1570. God in

  1571. the midst

  1572. of your

  1573. heartache.

  1574. Maybe it's

  1575. that you

  1576. receive comfort

  1577. in your

  1578. suffering so

  1579. that you can

  1580. comfort others

  1581. and in

  1582. time to be

  1583. able to

  1584. disciple and

  1585. help other

  1586. people who

  1587. are going

  1588. through their

  1589. suffering.

  1590. You see,

  1591. when the

  1592. light of

  1593. Jesus shines

  1594. into our

  1595. life, it

  1596. transforms us

  1597. completely.

  1598. We see our

  1599. sin in a new

  1600. light.

  1601. We see our

  1602. self in a new

  1603. light.

  1604. And we see our

  1605. sufferings in a

  1606. new light.

  1607. The light is

  1608. shining.

  1609. Are we being

  1610. attracted to the

  1611. light?

  1612. Or am I

  1613. hiding,

  1614. remaining in

  1615. darkness?

  1616. Let's just

  1617. take a moment

  1618. in the

  1619. quietness to

  1620. reflect on

  1621. that.

  1622. Let's just be

  1623. quiet before

  1624. the Lord.

  1625. Father God, thank you.

1626. Thank you for sending Jesus the light of the world.

1627. We pray that we would not reject that light,

1628. but that we would be drawn closer and closer to the Lord,

1629. the one who forgives us of all our sin,

1630. the one who sets us on a new path, a life of light,

1631. and the one who will help us and work good in and through our suffering for your glory.

  1632. Amen.
