  1. And Chris is going to read for us this morning.

  2. Thanks, Rich.

  3. Our reading is from John chapter 10, beginning at verse 1 and going to verse 18.

    John 10 chapter mention

  4. And that's on page 1076 of the Red Bible.

  5. So it's John chapter 10, beginning at verse 1.

    John 10 chapter mention

  6. Very truly, I tell you, Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate,

  7. but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.

  8. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

  9. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.

  10. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  11. When he is brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them,

  12. and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

  13. But they will never follow a stranger.

  14. In fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice.

  15. Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

  16. Therefore, Jesus said again,

  17. Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.

  18. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them.

  19. I am the gate.

  20. Whoever enters through me will be saved.

  21. They will come in and go out and find pasture.

  22. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  23. I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.

  24. I am the good shepherd.

  25. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  26. The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep.

  27. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.

  28. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.

  29. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

  30. I am the good shepherd.

  31. I know my sheep and my sheep know me,

  32. just as the father knows me and I know the father.

  33. And I lay down my life for the sheep.

  34. I have other sheep that are not of this sheepfold.

  35. I must bring them also.

  36. They too will listen to my voice and there should be one flock and one shepherd.

  37. The reason my father loves me is that I lay down my life only to take it up again.

  38. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.

  39. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again.

  40. This command I received from my father.

  41. Thanks very much, Chris, for reading and thanks, Sam, for leading.

  42. And thank you too to the musicians.

  43. I'm always amazed and wonder and say thank you, God, for musicians,

  44. because I'm not a musician.

  45. So it's great to have people play.

  46. So thank you for that today.

  47. Let's keep our Bibles open in John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  48. as we look at the subject of the one true shepherd.

  49. Let's pray.

  50. Let's pray.

  51. Let's pray.

  52. Let's pray.

  53. Let's pray.

  54. Father, our prayer is that we would hear your voice to us today through your word.

  55. And that as we hear, we would follow you.

  56. That we would trust you.

  57. Help us now, we ask.

  58. And it's in his name we pray.

  59. Amen.

  60. Look at verse 11.

  61. Jesus says, I am the good shepherd.

  62. And in case we miss it, again in verse 14, I am the good shepherd.

  63. Why not, I am the good baker?

  64. Or I am the good carpenter.

  65. After all, that's what Jesus did.

  66. He was a carpenter.

  67. Well, throughout the story of the Bible, God is portrayed as a shepherd and his people as sheep.

  68. Look how the prophet Isaiah speaks of God's care for his people.

  69. You can see it there on screen.

  70. He that is God tends his flock like a shepherd.

  71. He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart.

  72. He gently leads those that have young.

  73. What a beautiful picture.

  74. If you are part of God's flock today, how reassuring it is that he tenderly holds you and leads you.

  75. The shepherd loves you.

  76. In fact, God had called the leaders of his people to be shepherds.

  77. Essentially, God was saying to them, shepherd the people just like I do.

  78. But the problem was, instead of caring for the flock, they abandoned the flock.

  79. Go with me, please, to Ezekiel chapter 34.

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  80. Ezekiel chapter 34.

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  81. First there, if you could give me the page number, I forgot to check it there.

  82. Ezekiel 34.

  83. 8-6-5.

  84. 8-6-5.

  85. Ezekiel 34.

  86. And in this chapter, through the prophet Ezekiel, God gives us a picture.

  87. He shows us bad shepherds and promises a good shepherd.

  88. Shows us bad shepherds and promises us a good shepherd.

  89. First, look at the bad shepherds.

  90. We'll pick it up in the middle of verse 2.

  91. This is what the sovereign Lord says.

  92. Woe to you, shepherds of Israel, the leaders, who only take care of yourselves.

  93. Should not the shepherds take care of the flock?

  94. You eat the curds, the food, you clothe yourselves with wool, and you slaughter the choice animals.

  95. But you do not take care of the flock, that is, the people.

  96. You have not strengthened the weak, or healed those who are ill, or bound up the injured.

  97. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost.

  98. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.

  99. These were leaders, kings, who were meant to be the spiritual leaders, called to provide and protect, to help and to heal.

  100. But like all human leaders, they failed desperately.

  101. So while not only rebuking the bad shepherds, second, God promised a good shepherd.

  102. God promised to come and replace the bad shepherds with himself.

  103. Look at verse 11.

  104. For this is what the sovereign Lord says.

  105. I myself will search for my sheep and look after them.

  106. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep.

  107. I will rescue them from the places where they've been scattered on the day of clouds and darkness.

  108. Down to verse 15.

  109. I myself will tend my sheep and make them lie down, declares the sovereign Lord.

  110. I will search for the lost and bring back the strays.

  111. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak.

  112. But the sleek and the strong, I will destroy.

  113. I will shepherd the flock with justice.

  114. Let's go back to John's Gospel.

  115. A picture there of the failed shepherds who will one day be replaced by the promised shepherd.

  116. Now look at John chapter 10 and how Jesus opens up this section.

    John 10 chapter mention

  117. Look who he's talking to.

  118. Did you catch that in verse 1?

  119. Very truly, I tell you Pharisees.

  120. Anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in some other way is a thief and a robber.

  121. Ring any bells?

  122. You Pharisees.

  123. You Pharisees.

  124. You Pharisees.

  125. The so-called spiritual leaders of the people.

  126. You're just like those bad shepherds.

  127. Remember how they treated the man who had been born blind?

  128. Just go back a few verses to John chapter 9 verse 34.

    John 9:34

  129. He claimed he had been healed by Jesus and that he was God.

  130. And look at their reply, verse 34.

  131. You are steeped in sin at birth.

  132. How dare you lecture us?

  133. And they threw him out.

  134. Jesus, on the other hand, verse 35.

  135. He had heard they had thrown him out.

  136. And he found him.

  137. He went looking for him.

  138. You see, Jesus is saying,

  139. I am that promised shepherd.

  140. I am the one who's come to search for the lost and to bring back the stray.

  141. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak.

  142. I will even lay down my life for you.

  143. I am the good shepherd and you can trust me.

  144. Now sadly, our country in many ways has a history of suffering from bad shepherds.

  145. Spiritual shepherds and political shepherds.

  146. The church has let the people down.

  147. People have run to the church for life.

  148. But instead have received lies.

  149. And sometimes people have been hurt.

  150. Our governments have made promises.

  151. But they end up being broken promises.

  152. Do you expect as the politicians,

  153. as they canvas around our country and knock on the door,

  154. do you think every single promise they give you is going to be completed?

  155. Well, I think they'll try their very best.

  156. But the reality is,

  157. they fail.

  158. But let's not point the finger too much at the church or the government,

  159. because what we see at times there

  160. is just a little reflection of our own life.

  161. You see, rather than shepherds,

  162. the Bible describes us as the sheep.

  163. Sheep who have gone astray,

  164. who've wandered away

  165. and done our own thing.

  166. We cannot even manage to shepherd ourselves.

  167. Never mind anybody else.

  168. You see, what this country needs,

  169. what we all need,

  170. is a shepherd

  171. who will come and forgive us

  172. for all the things we have done wrong.

  173. A shepherd who will come alongside us

  174. in our brokenness and in our hurt

  175. and heal us

  176. and restore us

  177. and provide for us

  178. and be there for us.

  179. And Jesus is saying to us afresh this morning,

  180. I am that good shepherd.

  181. So let's explore together

  182. and see how Jesus is good for us today.

  183. First,

  184. Jesus gathers all his sheep.

  185. At the beginning of John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  186. we have in verse 1 there,

  187. the sheepfold.

  188. A picture of,

  189. if you like,

  190. a stone circle

  191. in which is all the sheep.

  192. So the different shepherds

  193. from the different places

  194. in the night time

  195. would come down to the sheepfold

  196. and they would bring all their sheep in

  197. and they would be all mixed in together.

  198. And then in the morning,

  199. the shepherd would come

  200. for his sheep.

  201. We'll pick it up in verse 2.

  202. The one who enters by the gate

  203. is the shepherd of the sheep.

  204. The gatekeeper,

  205. the one who'd been protecting them

  206. through the night,

  207. opens the gate for him.

  208. And the sheep listen to his voice.

  209. He calls out his own sheep by name

  210. and he leads them out.

  211. So a big, big pen

  212. full of sheep.

  213. The shepherd comes along

  214. and he calls them.

  215. But who comes?

  216. Only those,

  217. verse 3,

  218. he calls by name.

  219. The ones that the shepherd knows.

  220. The ones that already

  221. belong to him.

  222. They're the ones he calls out.

  223. Now to help us understand

  224. what's going on here,

  225. cast your minds back

  226. to the Exodus.

  227. When God's people, Israel,

  228. were in slavery in Egypt

  229. under the brutal tyrant Pharaoh.

  230. And what did God do?

  231. He called his people out.

  232. Look how that rescue is described

  233. in the Psalm 78.

  234. God brought his people out

  235. like a flock.

  236. He led them like sheep

  237. in the wilderness.

  238. He guided them safely

  239. so that they were unafraid.

  240. He settled the people of Israel

  241. in their homes.

  242. You see,

  243. Jesus is saying,

  244. I am that shepherd.

  245. The one who's come

  246. to rescue you.

  247. The one who's come

  248. to gather my sheep

  249. and to call you

  250. to myself.

  251. I have come

  252. to set you free

  253. from a greater slavery.

  254. Sin.

  255. I've come to set you free

  256. from a greater tyrant.

  257. Death.

  258. I've come to lead you

  259. out of your darkness

  260. and bring you

  261. into a life

  262. of light

  263. and freedom.

  264. Jesus gathers

  265. his sheep,

  266. his people,

  267. as he calls us

  268. by name,

  269. calling us

  270. into his family.

  271. And this is what we are,

  272. but an expression

  273. this morning

  274. of his family.

  275. Sheep who've been

  276. gathered in

  277. to his church.

  278. verse 4.

  279. When he is brought

  280. out all his own,

  281. the shepherd

  282. goes on ahead

  283. of them

  284. and the sheep

  285. follow him

  286. because they know

  287. his voice.

  288. Now maybe you're

  289. wondering this morning

  290. if I'm part

  291. of God's flock.

  292. Maybe you're not.

  293. Well, there's good news

  294. for you.

  295. Jump ahead

  296. to verse 16.

  297. Jesus says,

  298. I have other sheep

  299. that are not

  300. of this sheepfold.

  301. I must bring

  302. them in

  303. also.

  304. They too

  305. will listen

  306. to my voice

  307. and there shall

  308. be one flock

  309. and one shepherd.

  310. You see,

  311. if we are not

  312. part of God's

  313. flock today,

  314. if we are not

  315. under his care,

  316. you can be.

  317. This is the

  318. invitation.

  319. God,

  320. by his Holy

  321. Spirit,

  322. is calling

  323. you by name.

  324. He knows

  325. you.

  326. He knows

  327. your past.

  328. He knows

  329. your future.

  330. He knows

  331. your past

  332. failures

  333. and your future

  334. flaws.

  335. He knows

  336. your hurts

  337. today.

  338. He knows

  339. your pains

  340. and the struggle

  341. that you are

  342. going through

  343. and he calls

  344. you to himself.

  345. Believe

  346. me.

  347. Follow

  348. me.

  349. I am the

  350. good shepherd

  351. and I

  352. will gather

  353. my sheep.

  354. Second,

  355. Jesus gathers

  356. all his sheep

  357. and he provides

  358. for all his

  359. sheep.

  360. I got that

  361. right.

  362. There we are.

  363. He provides

  364. for all his

  365. sheep.

  366. Look at

  367. verse 9.

  368. Jesus says,

  369. I am the

  370. gate.

  371. Whoever

  372. enters

  373. through me,

  374. whoever

  375. comes to

  376. me,

  377. believes in

  378. me,

  379. will be

  380. saved.

  381. They will

  382. come in

  383. and go

  384. out,

  385. back and

  386. forth,

  387. and find

  388. pasture.

  389. Again,

  390. we're provided

  391. with this

  392. wonderful picture

  393. of a shepherd

  394. taking care of

  395. his sheep,

  396. bringing them

  397. in and out

  398. to the

  399. pasture to

  400. provide for

  401. them what

  402. they need.

  403. And Jesus

  404. picks up on

  405. this image

  406. to show us

  407. that what

  408. he provides

  409. for the

  410. sheep is

  411. eternally

  412. good.

  413. Look at

  414. verse 10.

  415. The thief

  416. comes only

  417. to steal

  418. and kill

  419. and destroy

  420. the bad

  421. shepherds.

  422. But I

  423. have come

  424. that they

  425. may have

  426. life and

  427. have it

  428. to the

  429. full.

  430. The bad

  431. shepherds,

  432. well,

  433. bad

  434. shepherds

  435. are all

  436. around us

  437. and their

  438. voice is

  439. crying out

  440. to us.

  441. They say,

  442. live your

  443. own life.

  444. Find your

  445. own path.

  446. Be who

  447. you want

  448. to be.

  449. Believe in

  450. yourself.

  451. You know

  452. what's best.

  453. But that's

  454. like a shepherd

  455. leading a

  456. sheep towards

  457. the edge

  458. of a cliff.

  459. This kind

  460. of teaching,

  461. this kind

  462. of philosophy

  463. will only

  464. destroy you.

  465. life.

  466. But the

  467. life that

  468. Jesus

  469. offers

  470. is abundant.

  471. Did you

  472. see it at

  473. the end

  474. of verse

  475. 10?

  476. I have

  477. come that

  478. you may

  479. have life

  480. and have

  481. it to

  482. the full,

  483. to its

  484. overflowing.

  485. A life

  486. that satisfies

  487. and fulfills.

  488. Remember the

  489. food and

  490. drink that

  491. Jesus has

  492. promised to

  493. provide for

  494. his people?

  495. Do you

  496. remember the

  497. woman at

  498. the well?

  499. And Jesus

  500. says to

  501. the woman,

  502. if you knew

  503. who has the

  504. water of

  505. life, you

  506. would ask

  507. for him.

  508. And Jesus

  509. says, the

  510. water I

  511. give will

  512. become in

  513. you a

  514. spring of

  515. water,

  516. welling up

  517. to eternal

  518. life.

  519. And the

  520. crowd that

  521. he fed

  522. with the

  523. bread,

  524. bread,

  525. physical

  526. bread that

  527. satisfies our

  528. hunger,

  529. Jesus said,

  530. I am the

  531. bread from

  532. heaven,

  533. which you

  534. may eat

  535. and not

  536. die, but

  537. live forever.

  538. This is a

  539. full and

  540. abundant

  541. life.

  542. Now it

  543. doesn't mean

  544. to say that

  545. we're going

  546. to be free

  547. of struggles

  548. and suffering,

  549. but it

  550. does mean

  551. that we

  552. have a

  553. shepherd who

  554. will lead

  555. us and be

  556. with us.

  557. Even in

  558. the deepest

  559. darkness,

  560. Jesus will

  561. provide

  562. what you

  563. need.

  564. Even when

  565. we feel

  566. hopeless and

  567. helpless,

  568. Jesus the

  569. shepherd will

  570. sustain you.

  571. He knows

  572. your need

  573. today and

  574. he will

  575. provide and

  576. give you

  577. grace for

  578. every moment

  579. and every

  580. day.

  581. He will

  582. not let you

  583. down.

  584. Through

  585. Jesus we

  586. experience

  587. life in

  588. all its

  589. fullness.

  590. So he

  591. gathers

  592. his sheep,

  593. he provides

  594. for his

  595. sheep,

  596. and he

  597. will secure

  598. all his

  599. sheep.

  600. Look at

  601. verse 11.

  602. I am

  603. the good

  604. shepherd,

  605. and the

  606. good shepherd

  607. lays down

  608. his life

  609. for the

  610. sheep.

  611. sheep,

  612. the hired

  613. hand.

  614. Well,

  615. he's not

  616. the shepherd

  617. because he

  618. doesn't own

  619. the sheep.

  620. So when

  621. he sees a

  622. wolf coming,

  623. whoa,

  624. he abandons

  625. the sheep,

  626. he takes

  627. off,

  628. I'm out

  629. of here.

  630. And the

  631. wolf attacks

  632. and the

  633. flocks

  634. scatter.

  635. It's a

  636. frightening

  637. scene,

  638. isn't it?

  639. Because sheep

  640. are vulnerable

  641. and fragile.

  642. Sheep

  643. don't have

  644. sharp teeth

  645. and long

  646. claws to

  647. fight off

  648. their prey.

  649. Something a

  650. wolf has

  651. with great

  652. power.

  653. They're

  654. extremely

  655. dangerous.

  656. So when

  657. the wolf

  658. attacks,

  659. verse 13,

  660. the man

  661. runs away

  662. because he's

  663. a hired

  664. hand and

  665. he cares

  666. nothing for

  667. the sheep.

  668. Not

  669. Jesus.

  670. How

  671. different

  672. Jesus

  673. is to

  674. the offers

  675. of protection

  676. people give

  677. us today.

  678. He will

  679. come.

  680. He's

  681. warning us,

  682. yes,

  683. that wolves

  684. will come.

  685. I think in

  686. this context

  687. it's false

  688. teachers and

  689. corrupt leaders

  690. who will

  691. come to

  692. harm you

  693. and seek

  694. to lead

  695. you astray.

  696. But Jesus

  697. says,

  698. don't fear.

  699. I'm not

  700. like a

  701. hired hand.

  702. I will

  703. lay down

  704. my life

  705. for you.

  706. I will

  707. do whatever

  708. it takes

  709. to protect

  710. you and

  711. keep you

  712. forever.

  713. In fact,

  714. Jesus promises

  715. to secure

  716. our salvation

  717. forever.

  718. So once we

  719. trust him,

  720. we are his

  721. forever.

  722. Look over

  723. at verse 27.

  724. 27.

  725. My sheep

  726. listen to

  727. my voice.

  728. I know

  729. them and

  730. they follow

  731. me.

  732. I give

  733. them eternal

  734. life and

  735. they shall

  736. never perish.

  737. No one

  738. will snatch

  739. them out

  740. of my

  741. hand.

  742. My

  743. Father who

  744. has given

  745. them to

  746. me is

  747. greater

  748. than all.

  749. No one

  750. can snatch

  751. them out

  752. of my

  753. Father's

  754. hand.

  755. I and

  756. the Father

  757. are one.

  758. Do you

  759. see the

  760. double

  761. protection

  762. there?

  763. The picture

  764. is like we

  765. are in

  766. the hands

  767. of Jesus,

  768. gripped

  769. by his

  770. firm hands

  771. and around

  772. the hands

  773. of Jesus

  774. are the

  775. hands of

  776. the Father.

  777. So no

  778. scheming,

  779. no lying

  780. wolf,

  781. can take

  782. us from

  783. the protection

  784. of the

  785. Father and

  786. the Son.

  787. Not even

  788. our sin

  789. can take

  790. us.

  791. Not even

  792. the struggle

  793. we are

  794. going through,

  795. not even

  796. Satan

  797. himself.

  798. We are

  799. secure

  800. forever.

  801. The

  802. shepherd has

  803. gathered you

  804. in and he

  805. will provide

  806. for you

  807. and he

  808. will keep

  809. you.

  810. He will

  811. hold you

  812. fast.

  813. And then

  814. fourth,

  815. Jesus the

  816. shepherd dies

  817. for all

  818. his sheep.

  819. Back to

  820. verse 14.

  821. I am

  822. the good

  823. shepherd.

  824. I know

  825. my sheep

  826. and my

  827. sheep know

  828. me.

  829. Just as

  830. the Father

  831. knows me

  832. and I

  833. know the

  834. Father

  835. and I

  836. lay down

  837. my life

  838. for the

  839. sheep.

  840. You see,

  841. when the

  842. wild animals

  843. come,

  844. a shepherd

  845. will fight

  846. them off

  847. with his

  848. stick or

  849. his crook

  850. or whatever

  851. he has,

  852. a few

  853. stones.

  854. He will

  855. do all

  856. that he

  857. can to

  858. protect

  859. his

  860. sheep.

  861. However,

  862. if that

  863. shepherd's

  864. life is

  865. in danger,

  866. he's going

  867. to let

  868. the wolf

  869. or the

  870. wild animal

  871. take that

  872. one sheep.

  873. Understandably,

  874. the shepherd

  875. will protect

  876. his own

  877. life.

  878. No

  879. sheep is

  880. worth the

  881. value of

  882. a shepherd.

  883. Better

  884. the sheep's

  885. life than

  886. losing your

  887. own life,

  888. eh?

  889. except for

  890. Jesus.

  891. Jesus does

  892. the unthinkable,

  893. doesn't he?

  894. The unimaginable.

  895. When it

  896. comes to

  897. his people,

  898. Jesus says,

  899. I will

  900. lay down

  901. my life

  902. for you.

  903. I will

  904. die for

  905. you.

  906. I am

  907. the good

  908. shepherd

  909. and I

  910. lay down

  911. my life

  912. for the

  913. sheep.

  914. In fact,

  915. his giving

  916. of his

  917. life

  918. is not

  919. accidental,

  920. but intentional

  921. and sacrificial.

  922. Again,

  923. look at

  924. verse 17.

  925. He says,

  926. the reason

  927. my father

  928. loves me

  929. is that

  930. I lay

  931. down my

  932. life

  933. only to

  934. take it

  935. up again.

  936. no one

  937. takes it

  938. from me,

  939. but I

  940. lay it

  941. down of

  942. my own

  943. accord.

  944. I have

  945. authority to

  946. lay down

  947. my life

  948. and I

  949. have

  950. authority to

  951. take it

  952. up again.

  953. This

  954. command I

  955. received

  956. from the

  957. father.

  958. You see,

  959. that's what

  960. makes Jesus

  961. not just

  962. a shepherd,

  963. but a

  964. good shepherd.

  965. These are

  966. not just

  967. words or

  968. illustrations.

  969. It's what

  970. Jesus has

  971. come to

  972. do.

  973. He came

  974. to die

  975. for us.

  976. That's

  977. his whole

  978. purpose.

  979. Speaking of

  980. Jesus'

  981. death,

  982. the prophet

  983. Isaiah put

  984. it like

  985. this.

  986. You know

  987. these words.

  988. We all

  989. like sheep

  990. have gone

  991. astray.

  992. Each of

  993. us has

  994. turned to

  995. our own

  996. way.

  997. And the

  998. Lord has

  999. laid on

  1000. him the

  1001. iniquity

  1002. of us

  1003. all.

  1004. All our

  1005. flaws,

  1006. all our

  1007. failures,

  1008. and Jesus

  1009. the shepherd

  1010. says,

  1011. I'll come

  1012. and I'll

  1013. take the

  1014. hit.

  1015. Jesus

  1016. puts

  1017. himself

  1018. where we

  1019. deserve

  1020. to be

  1021. placed so

  1022. that we

  1023. wouldn't

  1024. face his

  1025. judgment.

  1026. He lays

  1027. down his

  1028. life for

  1029. us so

  1030. that we

  1031. might have

  1032. life in

  1033. him,

  1034. life in

  1035. abundance.

  1036. And of

  1037. course,

  1038. as verse

  1039. 18 implies,

  1040. Jesus didn't

  1041. stay dead.

  1042. Yes,

  1043. he laid

  1044. down his

  1045. life only

  1046. for Jesus

  1047. to rise

  1048. again from

  1049. the dead.

  1050. he had

  1051. authority

  1052. to take

  1053. his life

  1054. up again.

  1055. And so

  1056. Jesus remains

  1057. the living

  1058. shepherd who

  1059. continues to

  1060. be good and

  1061. continues to

  1062. care for us

  1063. day by

  1064. day.

  1065. he.

  1066. So how

  1067. can you

  1068. and I

  1069. experience

  1070. this shepherd's

  1071. care personally

  1072. and intimately

  1073. as we

  1074. scatter

  1075. into our

  1076. communities

  1077. and into

  1078. our workplaces?

  1079. How can we

  1080. know the

  1081. love and

  1082. care of

  1083. this tender,

  1084. kind shepherd?

  1085. shepherd?

  1086. Well,

  1087. briefly,

  1088. two things.

  1089. First,

  1090. listen to

  1091. the shepherd's

  1092. voice.

  1093. We know

  1094. who the

  1095. sheep are

  1096. because they

  1097. listen.

  1098. They

  1099. listen.

  1100. Verse

  1101. three.

  1102. The gatekeeper

  1103. opens the

  1104. gate for the

  1105. shepherd and

  1106. the sheep

  1107. listen to

  1108. his voice.

  1109. he calls

  1110. out his

  1111. own sheep

  1112. by name

  1113. and he

  1114. leads them.

  1115. The sheep

  1116. listen

  1117. because they

  1118. are his

  1119. sheep.

  1120. Go for a

  1121. walk down

  1122. through the

  1123. Kerry Mountains

  1124. and you

  1125. will notice

  1126. there are

  1127. sheep marked

  1128. with all

  1129. kinds of

  1130. different

  1131. colours.

  1132. Red,

  1133. blue,

  1134. yellow,

  1135. purple.

  1136. Each colour

  1137. marks them

  1138. out to

  1139. which farmer

  1140. they belong

  1141. to.

  1142. Well,

  1143. the people

  1144. who belong

  1145. to God

  1146. are marked

  1147. out as

  1148. those who

  1149. listen to

  1150. his voice.

  1151. They listen

  1152. because they

  1153. are his

  1154. sheep.

  1155. Verse

  1156. four.

  1157. He brings

  1158. out his

  1159. own,

  1160. he goes

  1161. on ahead

  1162. of them

  1163. and his

  1164. sheep

  1165. follow him

  1166. because they

  1167. know his

  1168. voice.

  1169. And the

  1170. primary way

  1171. in which we

  1172. will hear the

  1173. shepherd's

  1174. voice as we

  1175. walk through

  1176. our day is

  1177. through God's

  1178. word.

  1179. So,

  1180. fellow sheep,

  1181. let's be

  1182. reading God's

  1183. word.

  1184. Let's get our

  1185. nourishment from

  1186. the bread of

  1187. life.

  1188. Let's drink of

  1189. the water of

  1190. life.

  1191. Let's be

  1192. studying the

  1193. word together

  1194. and encouraging

  1195. each other

  1196. with words

  1197. from God.

  1198. God.

  1199. And as we

  1200. do,

  1201. we will

  1202. grow deeper

  1203. and deeper

  1204. in our

  1205. relationship

  1206. with him.

  1207. Look at

  1208. it.

  1209. Verse

  1210. 14.

  1211. I'm the

  1212. good shepherd.

  1213. I know

  1214. my sheep.

  1215. My sheep

  1216. know me.

  1217. Just as

  1218. the father

  1219. knows me

  1220. and I

  1221. know

  1222. the father.

  1223. Isn't

  1224. that incredible?

  1225. The relationship

  1226. the father

  1227. and son

  1228. have together,

  1229. that intimacy,

  1230. that union,

  1231. that precious

  1232. relationship

  1233. existing from

  1234. before all

  1235. time began,

  1236. the father

  1237. and the son's

  1238. relationship.

  1239. He says,

  1240. you can have

  1241. that too.

  1242. Listen to

  1243. my voice

  1244. and you

  1245. will grow

  1246. deeper and

  1247. deeper in

  1248. relationship

  1249. with me

  1250. and you

  1251. will find

  1252. abundant

  1253. life.

  1254. so let's

  1255. listen to

  1256. the shepherd's

  1257. voice.

  1258. And

  1259. second,

  1260. let's

  1261. run

  1262. from the

  1263. stranger's

  1264. voice.

  1265. Verse

  1266. 5.

  1267. The

  1268. sheep

  1269. will never

  1270. follow a

  1271. stranger.

  1272. In

  1273. fact,

  1274. they will

  1275. run away

  1276. from him

  1277. because they

  1278. do not

  1279. recognize

  1280. a stranger's

  1281. voice.

  1282. Jesus

  1283. has made

  1284. it clear

  1285. there are

  1286. thieves and

  1287. robbers.

  1288. There are

  1289. wolves that

  1290. will come

  1291. in to try

  1292. and attack,

  1293. steal and

  1294. destroy and

  1295. lead God's

  1296. people away.

  1297. False

  1298. teachers,

  1299. and there's

  1300. plenty of

  1301. them,

  1302. spread their

  1303. lies.

  1304. Just

  1305. because they

  1306. carry a

  1307. big black

  1308. Bible and

  1309. walk up and

  1310. down the

  1311. stage,

  1312. just because

  1313. they have

  1314. thousands of

  1315. views on

  1316. YouTube,

  1317. doesn't mean

  1318. they are good

  1319. shepherds.

  1320. people

  1321. know

  1322. how do

  1323. you spot

  1324. a

  1325. stranger?

  1326. Even

  1327. more

  1328. importantly,

  1329. how do

  1330. you know

  1331. I'm not

  1332. a

  1333. stranger?

  1334. Well,

  1335. as we

  1336. read the

  1337. Bible and

  1338. as we

  1339. study the

  1340. word for

  1341. ourselves,

  1342. so we

  1343. deepen our

  1344. understanding

  1345. of God

  1346. and we're

  1347. able then

  1348. to discern

  1349. who are

  1350. the

  1351. strangers.

  1352. and to

  1353. run from

  1354. them for

  1355. our lives.

  1356. In fact,

  1357. you have a

  1358. responsibility

  1359. and I

  1360. want you to

  1361. take this

  1362. responsibility

  1363. serious.

  1364. You must

  1365. hold me

  1366. accountable

  1367. to the

  1368. word of

  1369. God.

  1370. If I

  1371. start drifting

  1372. off and

  1373. talking about

  1374. something else,

  1375. you should

  1376. say,

  1377. my role

  1378. is not

  1379. to make

  1380. followers

  1384. Please,

  1385. my goodness

  1386. me,

  1387. what a

  1388. mess you

  1389. will become.

  1390. No,

  1391. we run

  1392. to the

  1393. shepherd,

  1394. the good

  1395. shepherd.

  1396. Verse 27,

  1397. my sheep

  1398. listen to

  1399. my voice.

  1400. I know

  1401. them,

  1402. they follow

  1403. me,

  1404. I give

  1405. them

  1406. eternal

  1407. life,

  1408. they shall

  1409. never

  1410. perish,

  1411. no one

  1412. will snatch

  1413. them out

  1414. of my

  1415. hand.

  1416. Let's

  1417. pray

  1418. together.

  1419. Amen.

  1420. Amen.

  1421. Amen.

  1422. Amen.

  1423. Amen.

  1424. Amen.

  1425. Amen.

  1426. Amen.

  1427. Amen.

  1428. Amen.

  1429. Amen.

  1430. Amen.

  1431. Amen.

  1432. Amen.

  1433. Amen.

  1434. Amen.

  1435. Amen.

  1436. Amen.

  1437. Amen.

  1438. Amen.

  1439. Amen.

  1440. Amen.

  1441. Amen.

  1442. Our

  1443. Father God,

  1444. we confess

  1445. and admit

  1446. that like

  1447. sheep we

  1448. have wandered

  1449. away,

  1450. but we

  1451. thank you

  1452. that you

  1453. are the

  1454. good,

  1455. kind,

  1456. loving

  1457. shepherd

  1458. who has

  1459. gathered us

  1460. in,

  1461. called us

  1462. out of

  1463. darkness

  1464. into light,

  1465. providing

  1466. all that

  1467. we need

  1468. for every

  1469. moment and

  1470. every struggle

  1471. of life.

  1472. You are

  1473. sufficient.

  1474. Thank you

  1475. that in the

  1476. deepest

  1477. darkness

  1478. or the

  1479. greatest

  1480. storm,

  1481. you hold

  1482. us safe.

  1483. Our life

  1484. is secure

  1485. in your

  1486. hands.

  1487. our salvation

  1488. will never

  1489. be taken.

  1490. You have

  1491. us in

  1492. your grip

  1493. and you

  1494. have proved

  1495. it and

  1496. shown it

  1497. all through

  1498. your death

  1499. and resurrection

  1500. for us

  1501. so that we

  1502. might enter

  1503. into that

  1504. relationship,

  1505. Father and

  1506. Son.

  1507. Oh,

  1508. how good

  1509. you are.

  1510. Thank you.

  1511. help us to

  1512. listen to

  1513. your voice,

  1514. to follow

  1515. your ways.

  1516. In

  1517. Jesus'

  1518. name,

  1519. Amen.

  1520. Well,

  1521. we're going

  1522. to sing

  1523. together.

  1524. Here's a

  1525. good line.

  1526. When I

  1527. fear my

  1528. faith will

  1529. fail,

  1530. Christ

  1531. will hold

  1532. me fast.

  1533. That double

  1534. protection in

  1535. the hands of

  1536. Jesus and

  1537. the Father,

  1538. he will

  1539. hold me

  1540. fast.

  1541. Let's

  1542. stand together

  1543. if we're

  1544. able to,

  1545. and we'll

  1546. sing,

  1547. and as we

  1548. sing,

  1549. we encourage

  1550. one another

  1551. in the

  1552. faith that

  1553. we have.

  1554. Amen.

  1555. when I

  1556. fear my

  1557. faith will

  1558. fail,

  1559. Christ

  1560. will

  1561. hold me

  1562. fast.

  1563. When the

  1564. tenter

  1565. would

  1566. remain,

  1567. he will

  1568. hold me

  1569. fast.

  1570. I could

  1571. never keep

  1572. my own,

  1573. through

  1574. life's

  1575. will

  1576. back.

  1577. Oh,

  1578. my love

  1579. clears,

  1580. God,

  1581. God,

  1582. word,

  1583. he will

  1584. be sixth,

  1585. know.

  1586. I

  1587. need

  1588. days,

  1589. then,

  1590. be

  1591. Huh?

  1592. He

  1593. will

  1594. pass.

  1595. Means

  1596. none.

  1597. He

  1598. will

  1599. fade,

  1600. деле,

  1601. needs

  1602. lots.

  1603. fastest,

  1604. omy,

  1605. includes

  1606. that

  1607. Now,

  1608. of

  1609. the

  1610. dirt,

  1611. to

  1612. be

  1613. young.

1614. Wise and holy words, precious in His holy sight.

1615. He is holy, blessed in the love of His holy sight.

1616. He is holy, blessed in the love of His holy sight.

1617. He is holy, blessed in the love of His holy sight.

1618. I will let you fall.

  1619. Amen.

  1620. Amen.

1621. Let's pray together in just a moment.

  1622. The family blessing.

1623. We'll read it in just a moment.

  1624. Let me pray first.

1625. Father, thank you for the promise

1626. that you, the good shepherd, will hold us fast.

1627. Help us to step into this week confident,

1628. knowing that you are with us

1629. and will not leave us.

1630. Now let's pray the blessing together.

1631. May God, the great shepherd of the sheep,

1632. equip you with everything good for doing his will.

1633. And may he work in us what is pleasing to him

  1634. through Jesus Christ,

1635. to whom be glory forever and ever.

  1636. Amen.

1637. Please do stay for tea and coffee.

  1638. Chance to catch up.
