  1. And I'm going to read from verses 10 to 12 from Isaiah chapter 10.

    Isaiah 10 chapter mention

  2. So, beginning at verse 10.

  3. Isaiah 40.

  4. Sorry, did I say that?

  5. Yeah, pardon me.

  6. Isaiah 40, page 725.

  7. So I'm reading from verse 10 of chapter 40.

  8. See, the sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm.

  9. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.

  10. He tends his flock like a shepherd.

  11. He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart.

  12. He gently leads those that are young.

  13. Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand?

  14. Or with the breath of his hand marked off the heavens?

  15. Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket?

  16. Or weighed the mountains on the scales?

  17. And the hills in a balance?

  18. Can fathom the spirit of the Lord?

  19. Or instruct the Lord as his counsellor?

  20. Who did the Lord consult to enlighten him?

  21. And who taught him the right way?

  22. Who was it that taught him knowledge?

  23. Or showed him the path of understanding?

  24. Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket.

  25. They are regarded as dust on the scales.

  26. He weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.

  27. Lebanon is not sufficient for altar fires,

  28. nor its animals enough for burnt offerings.

  29. Before him all the nations are as nothing.

  30. They are regarded by him as worthless and less than nothing.

  31. With whom then will you compare God?

  32. To what image will you liken him?

  33. As an idol, a metal worker casts it,

  34. and a goldsmith overlays it with gold,

  35. and fashion it silvers, chains for it.

  36. A person too poor to present such an offering

  37. selects wood that will not rot.

  38. They look for a skilled worker

  39. to set up an idol that will not topple.

  40. Do you not know?

  41. Have you not heard?

  42. Has it not been told you from the beginning?

  43. Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

  44. He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,

  45. and its people are like grasshoppers.

  46. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,

  47. and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

  48. He brings princes to naught,

  49. and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.

  50. No sooner are they planted,

  51. no sooner are they sold,

  52. no sooner do they take root in the ground,

  53. than he blows on them and they wither,

  54. and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

  55. Thanks, sir.

  56. Good morning, everybody.

  57. Happy New Year to you all.

  58. This text raises a question this morning.

  59. God promises to be our shepherd

  60. and care for us in the coming year,

  61. but can he actually come through on that promise?

  62. Does he have what it takes to do it?

  63. It was a sunny June evening back in 2018,

  64. and I had just become a dad.

  65. My wife, Yelena, had a work thing on this particular evening,

  66. meaning I was left in charge,

  67. caring for our six-week-old daughter,

  68. on my own, for the very first time.

  69. Now, I was pumped.

  70. I knew that I could handle this.

  71. I mean, I was the dad after all.

  72. I was made for this moment.

  73. So I got to wondering,

  74. what would I do on this evening with my daughter?

  75. And in my great wisdom of being a dad for six weeks,

  76. I decided we would go for a nice long walk

  77. around the Crosshaven walkway,

  78. which I'd been looking forward to doing for some time.

  79. I popped her in the buggy.

  80. She drifted off to sleep,

  81. and all was going great

  82. until Elodie woke up screaming

  83. 40 minutes down the Crosshaven walkway.

  84. I had no bottle to feed her

  85. and no way to get home quickly.

  86. I knew I was in trouble.

  87. I knew that my only option

  88. was to ring my parents-in-law.

  89. Now, you can imagine,

  90. that was a very humbling phone call

  91. for me to make.

  92. But I had little time to worry about that, okay?

  93. Thankfully, Rob and Maria arrived within minutes,

  94. and they whisked the baby off home,

  95. safe and sound.

  96. And I was left there,

  97. on the side of the road,

  98. with a buggy that wouldn't fit in their boot.

  99. And I got to wondering,

  100. how on earth did I think

  101. that was a good idea?

  102. I was so foolish

  103. as to think that would be a good thing to do

  104. with my daughter that evening.

  105. You see, I had promised with all my heart

  106. to take care of this baby girl.

  107. The problem was not a lack of desire

  108. on my part.

  109. Oh, that was all there.

  110. The problem was that I was a rookie dad,

  111. and I lacked the wisdom

  112. and the wherewithal

  113. to actually care for her

  114. on that evening.

  115. And sometimes we think about God

  116. and his promises

  117. in the same way.

  118. Okay?

  119. Okay?

  120. We read his promise

  121. in verse 11,

  122. to tend his flock

  123. like a shepherd.

  124. He promises to gather you

  125. in his arms,

  126. to carry you

  127. close to his heart,

  128. to gently

  129. lead you

  130. through this

  131. coming year.

  132. I mean,

  133. who doesn't

  134. want that?

  135. What a wonderful

  136. promise.

  137. But is it all

  138. just platitudes?

  139. Is it all

  140. just empty

  141. words,

  142. empty promises?

  143. Just like I

  144. failed to come

  145. through on my promise

  146. to care for my daughter

  147. that evening,

  148. we doubt that God

  149. can really come through

  150. on his promise

  151. to care

  152. for us.

  153. Does God

  154. have the power

  155. and wisdom

  156. to make it happen?

  157. That's the big

  158. question today.

  159. And Isaiah knows

  160. that the people

  161. of Judah

  162. in this context

  163. here,

  164. they are also

  165. doubting God's

  166. care for them.

  167. See,

  168. in just the chapter

  169. before,

  170. God tells them

  171. that the Babylonian

  172. army

  173. are about to

  174. come and destroy

  175. Jerusalem,

  176. carrying them

  177. off

  178. as exiles.

  179. So,

  180. this promise

  181. of God's

  182. shepherding

  183. care over them

  184. does not come

  185. to these people

  186. at a time

  187. of peace

  188. and prosperity

  189. when everything's

  190. going hunky-dory.

  191. No.

  192. It comes to them

  193. in the middle

  194. of their worst-case

  195. scenario

  196. when the outlook

  197. is bleak.

  198. And no doubt

  199. they were wondering,

  200. just like we

  201. would be,

  202. is God

  203. really caring

  204. for us

  205. in the middle

  206. of this?

  207. And how many

  208. of us

  209. on this first

  210. Sunday

  211. in the new

  212. year

  213. look out

  214. for the

  215. coming year

  216. and if we're

  217. honest

  218. it looks

  219. bleak.

  220. Maybe you go

  221. into it

  222. facing loneliness

  223. or illness

  224. or old age.

  225. Maybe you

  226. are anxious

  227. about relationships,

  228. work,

  229. or school.

  230. Maybe you go

  231. into it

  232. knowing you're

  233. so far

  234. from where

  235. you want

  236. to be

  237. at this

  238. point

  239. in your

  240. life.

  241. The outlook

  242. in lots

  243. of different

  244. ways

  245. might be

  246. bleak.

  247. And in this

  248. context we,

  249. like the people

  250. of Judah,

  251. we naturally

  252. begin to

  253. wonder,

  254. can God

  255. actually come

  256. through on

  257. his promise

  258. to care for

  259. us this year?

  260. And the answer

  261. that this text

  262. gives us

  263. is a resounding

  264. yes,

  265. he can.

  266. The reason

  267. why is first

  268. given to us

  269. in verse 10.

  270. Have a look

  271. down at it.

  272. See,

  273. the sovereign

  274. Lord comes

  275. with power

  276. and he

  277. rules

  278. with a

  279. mighty

  280. arm.

  281. God can

  282. shepherd us

  283. this year

  284. because he

  285. is in

  286. sovereign

  287. control

  288. over

  289. all

  290. things.

  291. here's a

  292. definition

  293. for God's

  294. sovereignty

  295. by a famous

  296. author.

  297. He says,

  298. God's sovereignty

  299. is his

  300. right

  301. and power

  302. to do

  303. all

  304. that he

  305. decides

  306. to do.

  307. And if you

  308. have believed

  309. in Jesus,

  310. if you're in

  311. Christ

  312. this day,

  313. then remember

  314. this one

  315. thing.

  316. the sovereign

  317. wise

  318. ruler of

  319. the universe

  320. is your

  321. shepherd.

  322. That is

  323. why he

  324. is able

  325. to care

  326. for you.

  327. If he

  328. has all

  329. the power

  330. and all

  331. the wisdom,

  332. put those

  333. two together,

  334. he is more

  335. than able

  336. to care

  337. for you,

  338. to lead

  339. you and

  340. guide you

  341. through

  342. 2025.

  343. We're

  344. going to

  345. see all

  346. of this

  347. in the

  348. text,

  349. but first

  350. let's just

  351. pray and

  352. ask God

  353. for his

  354. help.

  355. Lord,

  356. give us

  357. new eyes

  358. today to

  359. see your

  360. sovereignty

  361. over all.

  362. Give us

  363. that fresh

  364. vision of

  365. how strong

  366. and wise

  367. you are

  368. so that we

  369. can trust

  370. in your

  371. promise to

  372. care for

  373. us this

  374. year.

  375. We need

  376. you now.

  377. Amen.

  378. First thing

  379. we're going

  380. to do is

  381. see God's

  382. sovereignty

  383. in this

  384. text and

  385. then his

  386. wisdom and

  387. we'll finish

  388. then with

  389. one big

  390. implication

  391. for our

  392. lives.

  393. So first,

  394. your shepherd

  395. is the

  396. sovereign ruler

  397. over all.

  398. And the

  399. first thing

  400. we see is

  401. that he's

  402. sovereign over

  403. creation.

  404. Just look

  405. down at

  406. verse 12

  407. there.

  408. It says,

  409. who has

  410. measured the

  411. waters in

  412. the hollow

  413. of his

  414. hand or

  415. with the

  416. breath of

  417. his hand

  418. marked off

  419. the heavens?

  420. Who has

  421. held the

  422. dust of

  423. the earth

  424. in a

  425. basket or

  426. weighed the

  427. mountains on

  428. the scales

  429. and the

  430. hills in a

  431. balance?

  432. You know,

  433. God is

  434. that just

  435. a tender

  436. shepherd.

  437. He's bigger

  438. than our

  439. wildest

  440. imaginations,

  441. so big that

  442. he measures

  443. the whole

  444. universe with

  445. a hand

  446. span.

  447. Look at

  448. verse 25.

  449. He says,

  450. to whom

  451. will you

  452. compare me?

  453. Who is

  454. my equal?

  455. Says the

  456. Holy One.

  457. Lift up

  458. your eyes

  459. and look

  460. to the

  461. heavens.

  462. Who created

  463. all these?

  464. He who

  465. brings out

  466. the starry

  467. host one

  468. by one

  469. and calls

  470. forth each

  471. of them

  472. by name

  473. because of

  474. his great

  475. power and

  476. mighty strength.

  477. Not one

  478. of them

  479. is missing.

  480. It couldn't

  481. be clearer.

  482. God is

  483. sovereign over

  484. his creation.

  485. The billions

  486. of planets

  487. spin at

  488. his command.

  489. So we

  490. might look

  491. at our

  492. struggles that

  493. we face

  494. this year

  495. and think

  496. they're too

  497. big for

  498. God, but

  499. we need to

  500. correct that

  501. misunderstanding.

  502. Your shepherd

  503. is the ruler

  504. of the

  505. universe.

  506. Don't

  507. underestimate

  508. what his

  509. great power

  510. can do.

  511. Secondly,

  512. God's

  513. sovereign over

  514. the nations.

  515. He's bigger

  516. than all the

  517. world's

  518. superpowers.

  519. In fact,

  520. they only

  521. exist because

  522. of his

  523. ultimate

  524. purpose.

  525. Look at

  526. verse 15.

  527. Surely

  528. the nations

  529. are like a

  530. drop in

  531. a bucket.

  532. They are

  533. regarded as

  534. dust on

  535. the scales.

  536. He weighs

  537. the islands

  538. as though

  539. they were

  540. fine dust.

  541. Verse 17.

  542. Before him

  543. all the

  544. nations are

  545. as nothing.

  546. They are

  547. regarded by

  548. him as

  549. worthless and

  550. less than

  551. nothing.

  552. Don't look

  553. at China

  554. or Russia

  555. or the

  556. EU or

  557. USA.

  558. Don't look

  559. at them and

  560. say, oh,

  561. who could

  562. stand against

  563. their power?

  564. They're

  565. invincible.

  566. No, we

  567. shouldn't say

  568. that in

  569. light of

  570. this text.

  571. Despite

  572. all their

  573. military and

  574. financial wealth,

  575. to God they

  576. are less than

  577. nothing.

  578. That's how

  579. small they

  580. are.

  581. That's how

  582. weak they

  583. are.

  584. I think

  585. that's a

  586. wonderful

  587. reassurance.

  588. They can

  589. only act

  590. within the

  591. bounds of

  592. God's

  593. ultimate

  594. purposes.

  595. God's

  596. love.

  597. And we

  598. might think

  599. that their

  600. leaders are

  601. the ones who

  602. rule the

  603. world.

  604. But actually,

  605. if you look

  606. down on

  607. verse 21,

  608. we find

  609. something

  610. different.

  611. Verse 21,

  612. God is

  613. the true

  614. king,

  615. reigning on

  616. the only

  617. throne that

  618. matters this

  619. morning.

  620. all other

  621. kings and

  622. presidents

  623. sit in

  624. their tiny

  625. worthless

  626. thrones.

  627. And look

  628. at verse

  629. 23.

  630. He says,

  631. God brings

  632. princes to

  633. naught.

  634. He reduces

  635. the rulers

  636. of this

  637. world to

  638. nothing.

  639. No sooner

  640. are they

  641. planted,

  642. no sooner

  643. are they

  644. sown,

  645. no sooner

  646. do they

  647. take root

  648. in the

  649. ground,

  650. than he

  651. blows on

  652. them,

  653. and they

  654. wither.

  655. And the

  656. whirlwind

  657. sweeps them

  658. away like

  659. chaff.

  660. That's an

  661. amazing image,

  662. isn't it?

  663. Like little

  664. saplings

  665. planted in

  666. the ground,

  667. God plants

  668. the kings

  669. and governments

  670. of this

  671. world,

  672. and with a

  673. puff of

  674. his breath,

  675. they're

  676. brought down,

  677. swept away.

  678. God is

  679. in control.

  680. Whether it's

  681. Putin or

  682. Trump or

  683. Mihoi

  684. Martin,

  685. the leaders

  686. of the

  687. world make

  688. their decisions

  689. for good or

  690. ill,

  691. God's

  692. love,

  693. but none

  694. of them

  695. outside the

  696. bounds of

  697. God's

  698. ultimate

  699. control.

  700. Now that

  701. all leads

  702. us to a

  703. really

  704. difficult

  705. question.

  706. Is God

  707. sovereign

  708. over

  709. evil?

  710. Because how

  711. can we say

  712. God's in

  713. control over

  714. those who

  715. are in

  716. power when

  717. they often

  718. abuse that

  719. power,

  720. causing

  721. great harm

  722. to people?

  723. And whether

  724. it's Putin

  725. or your

  726. boss at

  727. work or

  728. the principal

  729. of your

  730. school or

  731. a manager

  732. of your

  733. football team,

  734. we just

  735. read that

  736. God plants

  737. all leaders

  738. in their

  739. positions of

  740. power.

  741. But does

  742. that mean

  743. that God

  744. is morally

  745. responsible

  746. for the

  747. evil choices

  748. that they

  749. make?

  750. The Bible's

  751. answer is

  752. no.

  753. God is

  754. not

  755. morally

  756. responsible

  757. for

  758. people's

  759. evil.

  760. God is

  761. holy.

  762. There is

  763. no

  764. darkness

  765. or evil

  766. in him.

  767. And think

  768. about

  769. Nebuchadnezzar,

  770. the king

  771. of Babylon.

  772. He was

  773. on his

  774. way to

  775. defeat

  776. the people

  777. of Judah.

  778. We know

  779. from the

  780. history books

  781. he burned

  782. Jerusalem to

  783. the ground

  784. and he

  785. deported

  786. most of

  787. those who

  788. weren't

  789. killed.

  790. He was

  791. violent

  792. and greedy

  793. and God

  794. would hold

  795. him to

  796. account for

  797. that.

  798. In some

  799. mysterious

  800. way,

  801. the king's

  802. evil choices

  803. ultimately

  804. fulfilled God's

  805. good plan

  806. for his

  807. people.

  808. And this

  809. is seen

  810. many places

  811. in scripture

  812. but I want

  813. to read out

  814. one other

  815. place.

  816. And this

  817. is when

  818. Peter,

  819. after Jesus'

  820. death and

  821. resurrection,

  822. was speaking

  823. to the

  824. crowd in

  825. Jerusalem.

  826. Just listen

  827. to what he

  828. says in

  829. Acts chapter

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  830. 2.

  831. This is

  832. what he

  833. says.

  834. Fellow

  835. Israelites,

  836. listen to

  837. this.

  838. Jesus of

  839. Nazareth

  840. was handed

  841. over to

  842. you by

  843. God's

  844. deliberate

  845. plan and

  846. foreknowledge.

  847. And you,

  848. with the

  849. help of

  850. wicked

  851. man,

  852. put him

  853. to death

  854. by nailing

  855. him to

  856. the cross.

  857. Notice

  858. there that

  859. Peter clearly

  860. implies that

  861. the people of

  862. Jerusalem,

  863. they freely

  864. chose to put

  865. Jesus to

  866. death.

  867. It wasn't

  868. like someone

  869. forced them

  870. to do it.

  871. No,

  872. they wanted

  873. to kill

  874. Jesus out

  875. of the evil

  876. desires of

  877. their hearts.

  878. And they

  879. were responsible

  880. for that.

  881. God's

  882. and yet

  883. equally

  884. true.

  885. It was

  886. that this

  887. was somehow

  888. part of

  889. God's

  890. deliberate

  891. plan for

  892. all time,

  893. which

  894. accomplished

  895. our

  896. salvation.

  897. You see,

  898. people are

  899. responsible for

  900. their free

  901. choices.

  902. choices.

  903. And yet

  904. God

  905. somehow

  906. is still

  907. sovereign

  908. over all

  909. of those

  910. choices,

  911. carrying out

  912. his

  913. deliberate

  914. plan.

  915. How those

  916. two realities

  917. work together

  918. in practice,

  919. well,

  920. that's a

  921. mystery,

  922. isn't it?

  923. We cannot

  924. fully comprehend

  925. it.

  926. And for

  927. the people

  928. of Judah,

  929. it was

  930. extremely

  931. difficult

  932. to trust

  933. God with

  934. the evil

  935. he allowed

  936. to happen

  937. to them

  938. in the

  939. face of

  940. King

  941. Nebuchadnezzar.

  942. But this

  943. text doesn't

  944. just teach

  945. us that

  946. God is

  947. a sovereign

  948. ruler.

  949. He can

  950. do

  951. whatever

  952. he pleases.

  953. If that

  954. were all,

  955. it would

  956. only be

  957. some

  958. comfort,

  959. but not

  960. enough.

  961. See,

  962. this passage

  963. also shows

  964. that God

  965. is the

  966. wise ruler.

  967. And that

  968. is doubly

  969. good news

  970. for Judah

  971. and for

  972. you and

  973. I.

  974. Just look

  975. at verse

  976. 13 with

  977. me.

  978. It says

  979. this,

  980. Who can

  981. fathom the

  982. spirit of

  983. the Lord

  984. or instruct

  985. the Lord

  986. as his

  987. counselor?

  988. Whom did

  989. the Lord

  990. consult to

  991. enlighten

  992. him?

  993. And who

  994. taught him

  995. the right

  996. way?

  997. Who was

  998. it that

  999. taught him

  1000. knowledge or

  1001. showed him

  1002. the path

  1003. of understanding?

  1004. The answer

  1005. is no

  1006. one.

  1007. No one

  1008. taught

  1009. God.

  1010. God does

  1011. not need

  1012. any advice

  1013. on how to

  1014. run his

  1015. universe

  1016. because he

  1017. knows all

  1018. things.

  1019. He has

  1020. full

  1021. understanding.

  1022. He sees

  1023. the end

  1024. of time

  1025. from the

  1026. beginning.

  1027. All his

  1028. judgments

  1029. are

  1030. perfect.

  1031. he doesn't

  1032. get it

  1033. wrong.

  1034. Now the

  1035. people of

  1036. Judah,

  1037. you and I

  1038. included,

  1039. at many

  1040. times

  1041. thought that

  1042. he was

  1043. getting it

  1044. wrong.

  1045. But who

  1046. were they

  1047. to advise

  1048. God?

  1049. Could they

  1050. see everything

  1051. from his

  1052. eternal

  1053. perspective?

  1054. He alone

  1055. knows what

  1056. is best.

  1057. comfort that

  1058. is for us

  1059. today.

  1060. Not just

  1061. to know

  1062. that God

  1063. has the

  1064. sovereign

  1065. power to

  1066. do whatever

  1067. he pleases,

  1068. but that

  1069. every single

  1070. action that

  1071. he takes

  1072. is always

  1073. right,

  1074. always just,

  1075. always wise,

  1076. and we can

  1077. hold on to

  1078. that this

  1079. year.

  1080. The

  1081. people of

  1082. Judah could

  1083. trust their

  1084. sovereign,

  1085. wise shepherd

  1086. to care for

  1087. them,

  1088. because every

  1089. single action

  1090. was ultimately

  1091. right and

  1092. always fulfilling

  1093. his good

  1094. plan for

  1095. them.

  1096. So all

  1097. this leads

  1098. to one

  1099. final

  1100. implication

  1101. for us

  1102. today.

  1103. God is

  1104. the sovereign

  1105. wise ruler

  1106. over creation,

  1107. over the

  1108. nations and

  1109. their rulers,

  1110. then God

  1111. must also be

  1112. the sovereign

  1113. and wise

  1114. ruler over

  1115. all of my

  1116. life and

  1117. all of

  1118. yours.

  1119. And that

  1120. I think is

  1121. the most

  1122. compelling

  1123. reason to

  1124. trust in

  1125. God's

  1126. shepherding

  1127. care for

  1128. you and

  1129. I this

  1130. year.

  1131. He's

  1132. sovereign

  1133. over your

  1134. situation,

  1135. where you

  1136. live,

  1137. work or

  1138. go to

  1139. school.

  1140. None of

  1141. these are

  1142. random.

  1143. The

  1144. family that

  1145. you are

  1146. in,

  1147. the friends

  1148. that you

  1149. have,

  1150. God has

  1151. placed you

  1152. there for

  1153. a good

  1154. reason,

  1155. even if

  1156. you don't

  1157. want to

  1158. be there.

  1159. David

  1160. says in

  1161. Psalm 139,

  1162. all the

  1163. days ordained

  1164. for me

  1165. were written

  1166. in your

  1167. book before

  1168. one of

  1169. them came

  1170. to be.

  1171. That's

  1172. true.

  1173. And if

  1174. he has

  1175. ordained

  1176. everything

  1177. that will

  1178. happen in

  1179. your days

  1180. in 2025,

  1181. then that

  1182. means he's

  1183. also sovereign

  1184. over the

  1185. pain and

  1186. struggle that

  1187. you will

  1188. face in

  1189. those days.

  1190. God

  1191. and that's

  1192. why it's

  1193. really

  1194. important to

  1195. know that

  1196. he is

  1197. also wise.

  1198. If he

  1199. allows it

  1200. in your

  1201. life, it

  1202. is ultimately

  1203. for your

  1204. good and

  1205. his glory.

  1206. When you

  1207. suffer with

  1208. illness, you

  1209. can turn to

  1210. him and say,

  1211. this illness

  1212. is not what

  1213. I wanted,

  1214. and I

  1215. asked that

  1216. you would

  1217. take it

  1218. away, but

  1219. Lord, you

  1220. have allowed

  1221. it in my

  1222. life for

  1223. a good

  1224. reason, and

  1225. you will

  1226. help me

  1227. through this.

  1228. When you

  1229. suffer under

  1230. the sin

  1231. that other

  1232. people commit

  1233. against you,

  1234. you can turn

  1235. to your

  1236. shepherd and

  1237. say, Lord,

  1238. this was

  1239. wrong.

  1240. It should

  1241. never have

  1242. happened,

  1243. but I

  1244. believe you

  1245. allowed it

  1246. for a good

  1247. reason.

  1248. And Father,

  1249. you will

  1250. give me the

  1251. grace to

  1252. get through.

  1253. When you

  1254. suffer under

  1255. the burden

  1256. of stress,

  1257. you can turn

  1258. to him and

  1259. say, Lord,

  1260. this is too

  1261. much for me

  1262. to bear, but

  1263. you are

  1264. sovereign even

  1265. over this,

  1266. and you

  1267. will help me

  1268. to find a

  1269. way through.

  1270. Now, you

  1271. may wonder,

  1272. how can I

  1273. trust God

  1274. to shepherd

  1275. me if he

  1276. allows such

  1277. pain into

  1278. my life?

  1279. And God's

  1280. answer is,

  1281. yes, you

  1282. can trust me

  1283. to shepherd

  1284. you because

  1285. everything is

  1286. within my

  1287. ultimate

  1288. control.

  1289. So hear God's

  1290. words to you

  1291. today.

  1292. your pain

  1293. or suffering

  1294. is not

  1295. out of

  1296. control.

  1297. That's what

  1298. it's saying

  1299. to us.

  1300. No joy

  1301. or pain

  1302. can happen

  1303. to us

  1304. in the

  1305. coming year

  1306. unless our

  1307. sovereign

  1308. shepherd

  1309. allows it

  1310. in his

  1311. wisdom.

  1312. We do

  1313. not serve

  1314. a weak

  1315. God who

  1316. is unable

  1317. to stop

  1318. the wrong

  1319. things that

  1320. happen in

  1321. our lives.

  1322. No.

  1323. our God

  1324. is sovereign

  1325. over all

  1326. and wise

  1327. in everything

  1328. he does

  1329. and that's

  1330. a rock

  1331. solid

  1332. foundation

  1333. as we

  1334. move out

  1335. into this

  1336. new year.

  1337. So as we

  1338. finish,

  1339. let's go back

  1340. to the question

  1341. we started

  1342. with today.

  1343. God has

  1344. promised us

  1345. his tender

  1346. shepherding

  1347. care this

  1348. year.

  1349. but does

  1350. he have

  1351. the power

  1352. and the

  1353. wisdom

  1354. to make

  1355. it happen?

  1356. Well Isaiah's

  1357. answer is

  1358. yes,

  1359. isn't it?

  1360. Because your

  1361. shepherd

  1362. is the

  1363. sovereign

  1364. and wise

  1365. ruler

  1366. of the

  1367. universe.

  1368. The shepherd

  1369. who cares

  1370. for you

  1371. has written

  1372. all of

  1373. history

  1374. for the

  1375. good of

  1376. his sheep

  1377. and the

  1378. glory

  1379. of his

  1380. name.

  1381. So how

  1382. should we

  1383. respond?

  1384. Rest.

  1385. We rest

  1386. in our

  1387. shepherd's

  1388. sovereign

  1389. wise

  1390. rule

  1391. over us

  1392. in this

  1393. coming year.

  1394. Trust him

  1395. to guide

  1396. you on the

  1397. right path,

  1398. to comfort

  1399. you in the

  1400. dark

  1401. valleys,

  1402. to provide

  1403. everything

  1404. that you

  1405. need.

  1406. He's more

  1407. than strong

  1408. enough.

  1409. He is

  1410. more than

  1411. wise enough

  1412. to care

  1413. for you.

  1414. He is

  1415. more than

  1416. able to

  1417. keep his

  1418. promise

  1419. to shepherd

  1420. you.

  1421. We're

  1422. going to

  1423. sing a

  1424. song now

  1425. and it's

  1426. Psalm 23,

  1427. the Lord's

  1428. my shepherd.

  1429. I think

  1430. this is a

  1431. good song

  1432. for us

  1433. to finish

  1434. with because

  1435. hearing about

  1436. how God

  1437. is sovereign

  1438. over

  1439. everything

  1440. and control

  1441. of this

  1442. whole

  1443. universe,

  1444. but he's

  1445. all powerful

  1446. and all

  1447. wise.

  1448. Now we

  1449. need to

  1450. sing about

  1451. how he is

  1452. our shepherd,

  1453. our tender

  1454. shepherd.

  1455. He is

  1456. able to

  1457. care for

  1458. us like

  1459. that.

  1460. So that's

  1461. what this

  1462. song is

  1463. all about.

  1464. It's an

  1465. opportunity

  1466. for us to

  1467. place our

  1468. trust in

  1469. him again.

  1470. Before we

  1471. do that,

  1472. let me just

  1473. pray.

  1474. Lord, you

  1475. have told us

  1476. that you
