  1. Yeah, thanks.

  2. Our reading today is 1 Thessalonians 2, verses 1-7.

    1 Thessalonians 2:1–7

  3. It's page 1186 in the Red Church Bible.

  4. You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you was not without results.

  5. We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know,

  6. but with the help of our God, we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition.

  7. For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives,

  8. nor are we trying to trick you.

  9. On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.

  10. We are not trying to please people, but God, who tests our hearts.

  11. You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed.

  12. God is our witness.

  13. We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else,

  14. even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority.

  15. Instead, we were like young children among you.

  16. Thank you very much, Louise.

  17. Let's keep our Bibles open there.

  18. I'm just waiting on some water.

  19. I wasn't prepared, so we'll wait for that or I'll be pausing and getting stuck.

  20. So just a reminder, we've been looking at this letter of Thessalonians,

  21. perhaps one of the first letters that Paul has written to a church in Thessalonica in Greece.

  22. And we've covered the first few sessions together.

  23. And if you've missed any of them, please have a look on our website.

  24. All the talks are recorded there for you to follow up.

  25. Thank you very much.

  26. Thanks.

  27. Well, let's pray together and ask for the Lord's help as we look at his word.

  28. Father, thank you that you have given to us all that we need

  29. as we live for you and serve one another.

  30. Thank you for this letter written centuries ago,

  31. recorded for us today in our time,

  32. so that we may be encouraged and built up in our faith

  33. and helping us to live and be the kind of church you call us to be.

  34. Please help us by the power of your spirit.

  35. Amen.

  36. Amen.

  37. Well, on a trip overseas quite a while ago,

  38. I was exploring one of the local markets

  39. in order to get some gifts to bring home.

  40. And on one of the stands,

  41. a very enthusiastic man insisted

  42. that I buy a bottle of his aftershave.

  43. So we haggled and so on,

  44. and eventually we agreed on a good price.

  45. And when I got home,

  46. I took off the silky wrapping,

  47. opened up the beautiful gift box.

  48. Pssh, pssh.

  49. It was a counterfeit.

  50. It was just water in a bottle.

  51. No scent whatsoever.

  52. I had been tricked,

  53. taken for a ride.

  54. Now, when we pull back the wrapping of the church,

  55. when we get to the very heart and centre of the church,

  56. what do we find?

  57. Are we authentic?

  58. Or are we counterfeit?

  59. Is our message that we proclaim

  60. in the ministries that we're involved in,

  61. are they real?

  62. Or are they fake?

  63. But when the apostle Paul arrived in Thessalonica

  64. to preach the gospel,

  65. he encountered strong opposition.

  66. And in fear of their lives,

  67. for the mob that were after them,

  68. they escaped to the next town

  69. round the corner to Berea.

  70. But when the dust had settled,

  71. it seems that some of the new believers

  72. had begun to question Paul's motive.

  73. If his message was authentic,

  74. and if his ministry was genuine,

  75. well, then he would have never left us.

  76. It seems he just arrived into town

  77. wanting to make a quick buck,

  78. and as soon as troubles came,

  79. well, Paul and his buddies headed for the hills.

  80. So in part, Paul writes to defend himself,

  81. and as he does,

  82. he shows us today

  83. what an authentic church is like.

  84. What our message and ministry is.

  85. That it must be true,

  86. and it must be clear.

  87. So two big ideas we're going to look at this morning.

  88. Here's our first one,

  89. our message entrusted with the gospel.

  90. Look at verse 4.

  91. On the contrary,

  92. so despite what you think of me

  93. running away and leaving you on your own,

  94. on the contrary, he says,

  95. we speak as those approved by God

  96. to be entrusted with the gospel.

  97. Now we need to know

  98. what we have been entrusted with.

  99. So a few things.

  100. First, we've been entrusted with the gospel.

  101. The gospel is what we've been singing

  102. and celebrating about this morning.

  103. The good news about Jesus Christ

  104. God's chosen king

  105. who's come to rescue us from our sins

  106. and to establish his loving rule

  107. in our lives.

  108. It's all about a person,

  109. the person of Jesus,

  110. who dies for you and me,

  111. taking the blame for our rebellion

  112. and who rises again from the dead,

  113. defeating death,

  114. giving us life and life eternal.

  115. This is good news

  116. because it's not something that we do for ourselves,

  117. but it's all done by God for us.

  118. And in response,

  119. we turn from ourself

  120. and we put our trust in Christ.

  121. this is the wonderful,

  122. beautiful gospel.

  123. But this gospel that we have

  124. is God's.

  125. It's not a made-up message by Paul and his team.

  126. Have a look at the end of verse 2.

  127. But with the help of our God,

  128. we dare to tell you

  129. his gospel,

  130. the gospel of God.

  131. End of verse 8.

  132. We were delighted to share with you

  133. not only the gospel of God,

  134. but our lives as well.

  135. Or look at the end of verse 9.

  136. We worked night and day

  137. in order not to be burdened to anyone

  138. while we preached the gospel of God to you.

  139. You see,

  140. it's not just an idea

  141. or a philosophy

  142. invented by any person

  143. or by any church.

  144. We don't just kind of sit around and say,

  145. let's come up with a message to tell.

  146. No,

  147. this has been revealed

  148. by God.

  149. Verse 13.

  150. We also thank God continually

  151. because when you received

  152. the word of God

  153. which you heard from us,

  154. you accepted it

  155. not as a human word,

  156. but as it actually is,

  157. the word of God.

  158. This wonderful message

  159. is the very word from God

  160. to restore broken lives

  161. and restore and renew

  162. this disordered world.

  163. And it is this gospel

  164. that has been entrusted.

  165. You see,

  166. the apostle Paul

  167. was just like us.

  168. Sometimes we kind of set him

  169. high and above everybody else.

  170. Well,

  171. he needed the gospel too.

  172. He needed to trust Jesus

  173. for forgiveness of his sin.

  174. But he did have a special

  175. and unique calling.

  176. That's what we read

  177. in verse 4.

  178. He says,

  179. we speak as those

  180. approved by God

  181. to be entrusted

  182. with the gospel.

  183. Now,

  184. to help us understand

  185. this unique calling,

  186. have a flick forward

  187. to 2 Timothy.

  188. So you get to

  189. 2 Thessalonians,

  190. 1 Timothy,

  191. and then 2 Timothy.

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  192. chapter 1.

  193. 2 Timothy,

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  194. chapter 1.

  195. Paul is now writing

  196. to young Timothy,

  197. who's pastor of a church,

  198. and we're going to pick it up

  199. in verse 11.

  200. So Paul is speaking,

  201. he says,

  202. and of this gospel,

  203. I was appointed a herald,

  204. so somebody who announces good news,

  205. an apostle,

  206. one who has been sent by God,

  207. and a teacher.

  208. So he was uniquely set apart

  209. to announce

  210. and teach the gospel.

  211. He was given a special authority.

  212. His words,

  213. and his words that have been

  214. written down for us,

  215. are to be considered

  216. the very word of God.

  217. So he can say,

  218. verse 13,

  219. what you heard from me,

  220. keep us a pattern

  221. of sound teaching.

  222. Now nobody else

  223. could say that.

  224. I can't stand up

  225. before you today

  226. and say,

  227. you know,

  228. what you hear from me,

  229. keep us a pattern

  230. of sound teaching.

  231. I mean,

  232. the words of Johnny Grant.

  233. No,

  234. these are the words

  235. of God

  236. given to Paul.

  237. What you heard from me,

  238. keep us a pattern

  239. of sound teaching

  240. with faith,

  241. in love,

  242. in Christ Jesus.

  243. Guard

  244. the good deposit.

  245. What is the good deposit?

  246. The gospel,

  247. the good news.

  248. That was entrusted

  249. to you.

  250. Guard it

  251. with the help

  252. of the Holy Spirit

  253. who lives

  254. in us.

  255. You see,

  256. this same gospel message

  257. that Paul had received.

  258. He has now

  259. taught to Timothy

  260. and Timothy

  261. must now

  262. guard

  263. what has been

  264. entrusted to him.

  265. Now how do you

  266. guard the gospel?

  267. Well,

  268. look at chapter 2,

  269. verse 1.

  270. You then,

  271. my son,

  272. be strong

  273. in the grace

  274. that is in Christ Jesus

  275. and the things

  276. you have heard me say,

  277. so that same phrase again,

  278. the things you have heard me say

  279. in the presence

  280. of many witnesses,

  281. entrust

  282. to reliable people

  283. who will also

  284. be qualified

  285. to teach others.

  286. You guard it

  287. by passing it on

  288. to the next generation.

  289. And that's what

  290. has happened

  291. over the years

  292. and over the centuries.

  293. The gospel

  294. entrusted to Paul,

  295. uniquely given to him,

  296. has been written down

  297. for us

  298. and has been entrusted

  299. to the church

  300. today.

  301. we don't put

  302. our own spin

  303. on it,

  304. we don't alter it,

  305. we guard it.

  306. And we guard it

  307. by declaring

  308. to believers

  309. and unbelievers

  310. the truth.

  311. Because all of us,

  312. all of the time,

  313. need the gospel

  314. of God.

  315. Let's go back

  316. to Thessalonians.

  317. So imagine with me

  318. for a moment

  319. that a cure

  320. for cancer

  321. has been invented.

  322. It's a simple pill

  323. that when taken

  324. kills any

  325. and all

  326. cancerous cells.

  327. Now imagine

  328. that you've been

  329. given the task

  330. of guarding it.

  331. Well,

  332. it would be foolish,

  333. wouldn't it,

  334. to put it under

  335. lock and key

  336. and then throw

  337. the key away?

  338. No,

  339. you want that

  340. cure released

  341. to make sure

  342. it actually gets

  343. into the hands

  344. of the very people

  345. who need it.

  346. Likewise,

  347. wouldn't it be

  348. very foolish

  349. if you were to

  350. add your own

  351. ingredients to that

  352. in the hope

  353. of somehow

  354. making it better?

  355. No,

  356. you would ensure

  357. that it is not

  358. altered

  359. in any way

  360. so that it

  361. remains effective.

  362. Well,

  363. we've been

  364. entrusted

  365. with the gospel,

  366. a cure

  367. for sinful,

  368. broken,

  369. rebellious humanity.

  370. It is God's

  371. kind,

  372. gracious,

  373. and loving

  374. response

  375. to our

  376. sin-wrecked

  377. lives.

  378. A message

  379. with a promise

  380. of forgiveness,

  381. the transformation

  382. of our life,

  383. and the hope

  384. of eternal life

  385. to come.

  386. that's what's

  387. been entrusted

  388. to us.

  389. Or imagine

  390. you're the

  391. guardian of the

  392. Louvre Art Gallery

  393. in Paris.

  394. Your task

  395. is to bring

  396. the Mona Lisa

  397. on tour

  398. to all the

  399. capital cities

  400. of the world.

  401. Every city

  402. that you enter,

  403. you put up

  404. the picture

  405. on display.

  406. Now,

  407. wouldn't it be

  408. very foolish

  409. of us

  410. to get out

  411. your brush

  412. and think,

  413. this needs

  414. a little bit

  415. of updating

  416. here.

  417. I think

  418. I could

  419. do a better

  420. job.

  421. Maybe put

  422. a few

  423. earrings on

  424. or a

  425. moustache

  426. or,

  427. well,

  428. you know,

  429. whatever you

  430. like.

  431. And it would

  432. be foolish,

  433. wouldn't it,

  434. if you just

  435. kept a cloak

  436. over it,

  437. leaving it

  438. covered.

  439. No,

  440. you want

  441. it on

  442. display

  443. for everybody

  444. to see,

  445. to marvel

  446. at its

  447. beauty.

  448. well,

  449. we are

  450. guardians

  451. of the

  452. most

  453. treasured

  454. and most

  455. precious

  456. gift

  457. ever.

  458. We are

  459. to display

  460. together

  461. the beauty

  462. and the

  463. wonder

  464. of who

  465. Jesus

  466. is,

  467. his death

  468. for our

  469. sins,

  470. his

  471. resurrection

  472. from the

  473. grave.

  474. We display

  475. the glory

  476. of Jesus

  477. as we

  478. declare

  479. his

  480. gospel.

  481. Carigaline

  482. Baptist

  483. Church,

  484. we have

  485. been

  486. entrusted

  487. with the

  488. gospel of

  489. God.

  490. This is

  491. our time.

  492. This is

  493. our generation.

  494. It is

  495. the means

  496. of salvation

  497. for the

  498. world.

  499. It is

  500. the very

  501. hope

  502. for this

  503. town of

  504. Carigaline.

  505. It brings

  506. peace in

  507. our fears,

  508. comfort

  509. in our

  510. suffering,

  511. the assurance

  512. of life

  513. in the

  514. face of

  515. death.

  516. It is

  517. the cure

  518. for troubled

  519. souls.

  520. Declaring

  521. the gospel

  522. together

  523. puts the

  524. beauty of

  525. Christ on

  526. display,

  527. who softens

  528. hard hearts,

  529. who opens

  530. up minds

  531. to those

  532. who do

  533. not believe.

  534. We have

  535. been entrusted

  536. with the

  537. glorious

  538. gospel,

  539. it is

  540. our

  541. time.

  542. It is

  543. our

  544. generation.

  545. So,

  546. our

  547. message,

  548. entrusted

  549. with the

  550. gospel.

  551. Second,

  552. our

  553. ministry.

  554. You see,

  555. if we've been

  556. entrusted with

  557. the gospel,

  558. our ministries

  559. must be

  560. faithful to

  561. the gospel.

  562. faithful.

  563. In

  564. second,

  565. in

  566. 1st

  567. Thessalonians

  568. chapter 2,

  569. what we've

  570. just read,

  571. we're going

  572. to see

  573. three marks

  574. of what it

  575. means to

  576. be faithful.

  577. Here's the

  578. first one.

  579. That we

  580. would be

  581. willing to

  582. suffer,

  583. not twist

  584. the truth.

  585. Willing to

  586. suffer,

  587. not twist

  588. the truth.

  589. Look at

  590. verse 2.

  591. We had

  592. previously

  593. suffered and

  594. been treated

  595. outrageously in

  596. Philippi,

  597. as you know.

  598. So,

  599. before they

  600. got to

  601. Thessalonica,

  602. Paul and

  603. his team

  604. were in

  605. the city

  606. of Philippi.

  607. And there

  608. they shared

  609. the gospel

  610. openly,

  611. but it

  612. came at

  613. a cost.

  614. Here's

  615. what Acts

  616. tells us

  617. happened to

  618. them in

  619. that city.

  620. The

  621. magistrates

  622. ordered them

  623. to be

  624. stripped

  625. and beaten

  626. with rods.

  627. And after

  628. they'd been

  629. severely

  630. flogged,

  631. they were

  632. thrown into

  633. prison.

  634. Now,

  635. you would

  636. think,

  637. if that

  638. had happened,

  639. Paul would

  640. just go on

  641. to the next

  642. town and

  643. be quiet.

  644. But no,

  645. it doesn't

  646. stop them,

  647. does it?

  648. Look at the

  649. rest of

  650. verse 2.

  651. But with

  652. the help

  653. of our

  654. God,

  655. we dared

  656. to tell

  657. you his

  658. gospel

  659. in the

  660. face of

  661. strong

  662. opposition.

  663. For the

  664. appeal we

  665. make does

  666. not spring

  667. from error

  668. or impure

  669. motives,

  670. nor are

  671. we trying

  672. to trick

  673. you.

  674. Our

  675. message was

  676. true.

  677. Our

  678. motivation

  679. was pure.

  680. Our

  681. witness

  682. was honest.

  683. Why would

  684. we go

  685. through all

  686. that suffering

  687. if the

  688. gospel we

  689. were bringing

  690. was all

  691. made up

  692. and just

  693. taking you

  694. for a ride?

  695. No,

  696. the very

  697. reason we

  698. suffered,

  699. was because

  700. they were

  701. faithful to

  702. the gospel.

  703. Now,

  704. none of us

  705. likes to

  706. suffer.

  707. We might

  708. be beaten

  709. with rods,

  710. but we

  711. don't like

  712. to be

  713. kind of

  714. rejected

  715. and pushed

  716. aside because

  717. of what we

  718. believe and

  719. what we

  720. think.

  721. So the

  722. way to

  723. avoid

  724. suffering,

  725. if you

  726. want to

  727. avoid

  728. suffering,

  729. is to

  730. design your

  731. own

  732. gospel.

  733. Come

  734. up with

  735. your

  736. own

  737. ideas.

  738. I mean,

  739. leave

  740. little

  741. bits

  742. out.

  743. Never

  744. ever

  745. talk about

  746. repentance

  747. and turning

  748. to Jesus.

  749. And

  750. whatever

  751. you do,

  752. don't say

  753. anything about

  754. scripture

  755. being the

  756. authority.

  757. You'll

  758. upset people

  759. and they'll

  760. get really

  761. annoyed with

  762. you.

  763. Or

  764. alternatively,

  765. you could

  766. try this.

  767. Why don't

  768. you add

  769. things into

  770. it?

  771. Tell people

  772. that if

  773. you follow

  774. Jesus,

  775. guess what?

  776. All your

  777. problems are

  778. going to

  779. disappear.

  780. You'll

  781. never suffer

  782. and everything

  783. will be

  784. wonderful

  785. every single

  786. day.

  787. And what

  788. really works,

  789. if you want

  790. to get more

  791. people to

  792. come to

  793. church,

  794. tell them

  795. it's up

  796. to you,

  797. you decide

  798. what's best

  799. for you

  800. and how

  801. you want

  802. to live.

  803. No.

  804. That's

  805. trickery.

  806. That's

  807. using

  808. error to

  809. increase the

  810. numbers on

  811. a Sunday

  812. morning.

  813. That's

  814. designing

  815. your own

  816. gospel so

  817. that we

  818. avoid any

  819. pushback.

  820. Together we

  821. must remain

  822. faithful to

  823. the gospel,

  824. willing to

  825. suffer and

  826. not twist

  827. the truth.

  828. How about

  829. this one?

  830. Pleasing to

  831. God and

  832. not seeking

  833. personal gain.

  834. That's what

  835. it is to

  836. be faithful.

  837. Verse 5,

  838. on the

  839. contrary,

  840. we speak as

  841. those approved

  842. by God to

  843. be entrusted

  844. with the

  845. gospel.

  846. We're not

  847. trying to

  848. please people

  849. but God

  850. who tests

  851. our hearts.

  852. You know

  853. we never

  854. use flattery

  855. nor did

  856. we put on

  857. a mask

  858. to cover

  859. up greed.

  860. God is

  861. our witness.

  862. Now by

  863. nature,

  864. verse 4,

  865. we're people

  866. pleasers.

  867. We're all

  868. people pleasers.

  869. We say and

  870. do things so

  871. that people

  872. will like

  873. us.

  874. I know

  875. of one

  876. pastor in

  877. a church

  878. who

  879. discovered

  880. that his

  881. monthly support

  882. had been

  883. stopped.

  884. And he

  885. went to

  886. the church

  887. and asked

  888. a bit about

  889. it and

  890. they said,

  891. well,

  892. numbers are

  893. down,

  894. people aren't

  895. very happy

  896. with you,

  897. and if you

  898. want your

  899. pay, if you

  900. want your

  901. support,

  902. you're going

  903. to have to

  904. change

  905. something.

  906. And the

  907. temptation for

  908. him was to

  909. begin to

  910. please people

  911. so that

  912. people would

  913. like him

  914. and so that

  915. he would get

  916. his monthly

  917. support.

  918. It's called,

  919. verse 5,

  920. using flattery,

  921. saying what

  922. people want

  923. you to say

  924. and doing

  925. the kinds

  926. of things

  927. people want

  928. you to do.

  929. Of course,

  930. there are

  931. others who

  932. see ministry

  933. as a quick

  934. way of making

  935. money.

  936. They're tempted

  937. by greed.

  938. I've seen

  939. it on trips

  940. overseas.

  941. I've watched

  942. as a pastor

  943. has stood

  944. up and

  945. he's promised

  946. the congregation

  947. a special

  948. prayer for

  949. anybody who

  950. needed a

  951. job,

  952. guaranteed to

  953. get a job,

  954. heal your

  955. sickness,

  956. and to

  957. help those

  958. who are

  959. struggling

  960. with infertility.

  961. And before

  962. he prays,

  963. they must

  964. put their

  965. envelopes,

  966. which are

  967. filled with

  968. money,

  969. into a

  970. wooden drum.

  971. and then

  972. he prays.

  973. It's called,

  974. verse 5,

  975. putting on

  976. a mask

  977. to cover

  978. up greed.

  979. Now,

  980. we might

  981. think of

  982. these examples

  983. as extreme,

  984. but I think

  985. this is how

  986. we can all

  987. be at times.

  988. Instead of

  989. pleasing God,

  990. we want to

  991. please people.

  992. and the

  993. reward when

  994. we please

  995. people,

  996. we're liked.

  997. We become

  998. popular,

  999. we get

  1000. recognition,

  1001. we gain

  1002. more followers

  1003. on Instagram.

  1004. It might

  1005. be financial

  1006. reward,

  1007. but we're

  1008. praised and

  1009. we're talked

  1010. about.

  1011. No,

  1012. we're to

  1013. please God.

  1014. We don't

  1015. use flattery,

  1016. we don't

  1017. put on a

  1018. mask.

  1019. Verse 4,

  1020. God is

  1021. our

  1022. witness.

  1023. It's not

  1024. what people

  1025. think or

  1026. what people

  1027. say,

  1028. but it's

  1029. asking,

  1030. will God

  1031. be honoured?

  1032. Will God

  1033. be worshipped?

  1034. Will God

  1035. be pleased

  1036. with my

  1037. service and

  1038. all that I

  1039. do?

  1040. We remain

  1041. faithful,

  1042. pleasing to

  1043. God,

  1044. not seeking

  1045. personal gain.

  1046. The third

  1047. one of

  1048. faithfulness

  1049. to the

  1050. gospel is

  1051. being gentle

  1052. to others

  1053. and not

  1054. abusing

  1055. your

  1056. authority.

  1057. Do you

  1058. see that

  1059. in verse

  1060. 6?

  1061. He says

  1062. we weren't

  1063. looking for

  1064. praise from

  1065. people,

  1066. not from

  1067. you or

  1068. from anyone

  1069. else.

  1070. Even

  1071. though as

  1072. apostles of

  1073. Christ,

  1074. we could

  1075. have asserted

  1076. our

  1077. authority.

  1078. Instead,

  1079. we were

  1080. like young

  1081. children

  1082. among you.

  1083. Now,

  1084. not trying

  1085. to be

  1086. technical or

  1087. anything,

  1088. but if you

  1089. see the

  1090. little phrase

  1091. there,

  1092. young

  1093. children,

  1094. at the

  1095. bottom of

  1096. your page

  1097. in the

  1098. Bible,

  1099. you might

  1100. get a

  1101. different

  1102. translation

  1103. which says

  1104. gentle,

  1105. so that's

  1106. why I'm

  1107. saying

  1108. gentle.

  1109. Instead,

  1110. we were

  1111. gentle

  1112. among you.

  1113. Paul was

  1114. an apostle.

  1115. He'd been

  1116. given this

  1117. unique authority

  1118. from God,

  1119. so he

  1120. could write

  1121. to Timothy

  1122. and say,

  1123. what you

  1124. heard from

  1125. me,

  1126. keep as a

  1127. pattern of

  1128. sound teaching.

  1129. He had

  1130. this authority

  1131. from God,

  1132. but he

  1133. never misused

  1134. it or

  1135. abused it.

  1136. In fact,

  1137. he was

  1138. careful not

  1139. to mistreat

  1140. his position.

  1141. He was,

  1142. as it says

  1143. in verse

  1144. 7,

  1145. gentle

  1146. among you.

  1147. He could

  1148. never be

  1149. accused of

  1150. being pushy

  1151. or forceful

  1152. or demanding

  1153. or domineering.

  1154. He was

  1155. considerate

  1156. and tender

  1157. and humble

  1158. and kind.

  1159. He never

  1160. used his

  1161. authority to

  1162. bash people.

  1163. He used

  1164. his authority

  1165. to serve

  1166. people.

  1167. Now,

  1168. this is

  1169. crucial for

  1170. our day

  1171. and our time

  1172. and for this

  1173. church.

  1174. And particularly

  1175. as we address

  1176. everyone,

  1177. I want the

  1178. elders to

  1179. pay attention,

  1180. myself included

  1181. as one of

  1182. them.

  1183. We've been

  1184. given an

  1185. authority,

  1186. not the

  1187. kind of

  1188. authority like

  1189. Paul,

  1190. but we've

  1191. been given

  1192. an authority

  1193. to care

  1194. for this

  1195. local church,

  1196. for the

  1197. people who

  1198. gather.

  1199. And we

  1200. care by

  1201. feeding

  1202. the people

  1203. with God's

  1204. word.

  1205. We guard

  1206. the people

  1207. by watching

  1208. out for

  1209. false

  1210. teaching.

  1211. The

  1212. authority we

  1213. have is

  1214. an authority

  1215. to serve,

  1216. not abuse.

  1217. And sadly,

  1218. many pastors,

  1219. and we hear

  1220. about it in the

  1221. news, we read

  1222. about it,

  1223. and elders who

  1224. abuse their

  1225. authority for

  1226. personal and

  1227. selfish gain.

  1228. They speak as

  1229. if everything

  1230. they say is

  1231. equal to

  1232. God's word,

  1233. that it has a

  1234. power that must

  1235. be obeyed.

  1236. well, we

  1237. don't have

  1238. that kind

  1239. of authority.

  1240. And I

  1241. say to the

  1242. church, if

  1243. you hear us

  1244. acting or

  1245. living in

  1246. that way,

  1247. step in.

  1248. Our

  1249. authority is

  1250. the scriptures,

  1251. and those

  1252. scriptures are

  1253. to be taught

  1254. in gentleness,

  1255. not being

  1256. harsh.

  1257. So,

  1258. elders,

  1259. all of us

  1260. together as

  1261. the whole

  1262. church,

  1263. we must be

  1264. faithful to

  1265. the gospel,

  1266. gentle,

  1267. not abusing

  1268. our authority.

  1269. You see,

  1270. the message

  1271. we have,

  1272. and the

  1273. ministry we

  1274. do,

  1275. when we

  1276. keep to

  1277. the gospel,

  1278. is

  1279. authentic.

  1280. authentic.

  1281. And what

  1282. is authentic,

  1283. is effective.

  1284. Look at how

  1285. he starts in

  1286. verse 1,

  1287. chapter 2,

  1288. verse 1.

  1289. You know,

  1290. brothers and

  1291. sisters,

  1292. that our

  1293. visit to you

  1294. was not

  1295. without

  1296. results.

  1297. It was

  1298. effective.

  1299. He came

  1300. with the

  1301. full gospel,

  1302. and the

  1303. people that

  1304. he reached

  1305. were filled

  1306. with Christ,

  1307. because the

  1308. gospel is the

  1309. most precious

  1310. of gifts,

  1311. more valuable

  1312. than hidden

  1313. treasure,

  1314. more beautiful

  1315. than a rare

  1316. diamond.

  1317. It's

  1318. priceless,

  1319. because it

  1320. has the

  1321. power to

  1322. save.

  1323. And so

  1324. to have

  1325. Christ is

  1326. all that

  1327. we need.

  1328. For us

  1329. today as a

  1330. church,

  1331. it's as

  1332. simple as

  1333. this.

  1334. We have

  1335. been entrusted

  1336. with the

  1337. gospel,

  1338. and the

  1339. community in

  1340. which we

  1341. are in

  1342. are empty.

  1343. and as

  1344. we declare

  1345. the gospel,

  1346. so lives

  1347. are filled,

  1348. forgiveness

  1349. of sin,

  1350. freedom

  1351. from shame,

  1352. and fullness

  1353. in Christ.

  1354. This is

  1355. our time.

  1356. This is

  1357. our generation.

  1358. God has

  1359. entrusted to

  1360. us his

  1361. gospel.

  1362. Let us

  1363. continue to

  1364. encourage one

  1365. another to

  1366. remain faithful

  1367. to it,

  1368. so that many

  1369. within this

  1370. community will

  1371. trust Christ

  1372. and have the

  1373. joy of

  1374. salvation.

  1375. salvation.

  1376. Let's

  1377. pray.

  1378. Our

  1379. Father God,

  1380. we thank

  1381. you for

  1382. the glorious

  1383. hope of

  1384. Jesus Christ.

  1385. Thank you

  1386. that you

  1387. entrust to

  1388. us in

  1389. our day

  1390. this

  1391. beautiful

  1392. message,

  1393. help us

  1394. as we

  1395. go into

  1396. this week

  1397. that we

  1398. would take

  1399. every

  1400. opportunity,

  1401. open doors

  1402. that we

  1403. may speak

  1404. of hope

  1405. and of

  1406. Christ.

  1407. Father,

  1408. help us

  1409. to keep

  1410. on being

  1411. faithful,

  1412. trusting

  1413. you that

  1414. you will

  1415. do your

  1416. work

  1417. through

  1418. your

  1419. people.

  1420. We say

  1421. thank you

  1422. for our

  1423. salvation

  1424. today.

  1425. In

  1426. Jesus'

  1427. name,

  1428. Amen.

  1429. Well,

  1430. we're going

  1431. to sing
