  1. That's on page 642 of the Red Church Bible.

  2. ! Proverbs chapter 9.

    Proverbs 9 chapter mention

  3. !

  4. It's how God wired the universe.

  5. It's how everything works best.

  6. And the first part of the book of Proverbs, that's chapters 1 to 9,

  7. is like an introduction to the rest of the book.

  8. If you actually look across at chapter 10 there,

  9. this is where the short, punchy Proverbs begin,

  10. that the book is best known for, I suppose.

  11. So in chapters 1 to 9, the author, King Solomon,

  12. is appealing to his son to embrace the wisdom

  13. that's contained in the rest of the book.

  14. And one of his main methods of doing this

  15. is by personifying wisdom and folly as women.

  16. And chapter 9 is the climax of his appeal,

  17. right before the Proverbs statements begin.

  18. So as we read this text, here's something to watch out for.

  19. Notice the contrast between these two women, Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly.

  20. They are each presented as hosts, inviting us to a banquet.

  21. Notice what happens to those who embrace each of their invitations.

  22. Before we read, let's pray and ask for God's help.

  23. Lord, as we come to read your words to us now,

  24. we don't want to go through the motions.

  25. We want to really hear you speak to us now.

  26. We ask you to challenge us, convict us,

  27. move us to embrace your wisdom above the folly of this world.

  28. We plead that you'd help us to see Christ today.

  29. For his sake we ask.

  30. Amen.

  31. Chris is going to actually read the text aloud for us.

  32. Thank you.

  33. So it's Proverbs chapter 9.

    Proverbs 9 chapter mention

  34. Wisdom has built her house.

  35. She has set up its seven pillars.

  36. She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine.

  37. She has also set her table.

  38. She has sent out her servants and she calls from the highest point of the city.

  39. Let all who are simple come to my house.

  40. To those who have no sense, she says,

  41. Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed.

  42. Leave your simple ways and you will live.

  43. Walk in the way of insight.

  44. Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults.

  45. Whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.

  46. Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you.

  47. Rebuke the wise and they will love you.

  48. Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still.

  49. Teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.

  50. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

  51. And knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

  52. For through wisdom your days will be many.

  53. And years will be added to your life.

  54. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you.

  55. If you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.

  56. Folly is an unruly woman.

  57. She is simple and knows nothing.

  58. She sits at the door of her house,

  59. on a seat at the highest point of the city,

  60. calling out to those who pass by,

  61. who go straight on their way.

  62. Let all who are simple come to my house.

  63. To those who have no sense, she says,

  64. stolen water is sweet.

  65. Food eaten in secret is delicious.

  66. But little do they know that the dead are there.

  67. That her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.

  68. I wonder, have you ever been invited to a banquet feast?

  69. Two weeks ago, Yelena and I were invited to a wedding

  70. in this beautiful hotel beneath the Kerry Mountains.

  71. After the ceremony, we were treated to finger food and drinks

  72. in this sun-drenched garden.

  73. At 5.30, we were called into this grand banquet hall

  74. and found our seat at this beautifully laid table.

  75. There was wine for anyone who wanted it.

  76. You could order whatever soft drink you wanted.

  77. It would be delivered right to your table.

  78. Now, we were already feeling spoiled at this point.

  79. But then we saw that the menu had four courses.

  80. Each one with multiple choices.

  81. And even better, one of the main courses was steak.

  82. With peppercorn sauce and all the trimmings,

  83. my eyes nearly popped out of my head.

  84. This most generous host had paid for all 120 of his guests

  85. to eat steak.

  86. Well, after four delicious courses, including steak,

  87. I mean, how could you turn down that?

  88. I was well and truly stuffed.

  89. Now, a few years ago, we were invited to another wedding feast.

  90. It was a lovely ceremony.

  91. And afterwards, we sat down in the banquet hall.

  92. We waited and waited.

  93. And eventually, dribs and drabs of food began to arrive

  94. over the course of about an hour.

  95. It was really strange.

  96. Probably the strangest meal I've ever had at a wedding.

  97. The only standout memory I have is this bowl of roasted courgettes,

  98. which was plunked down on our table.

  99. There were 10 of us on the table.

  100. We all just looked at each other.

  101. And we slowly began passing around this bowl of courgettes,

  102. ladling out a little spoonful put in the middle of our plate,

  103. making sure that everyone would have enough around the table.

  104. And we were so hungry that we couldn't even wait for something else

  105. to come out to accompany it.

  106. We all just sat there laughing,

  107. eating our measly portion of roasted courgettes.

  108. Needless to say, as soon as the speech was finished,

  109. Yelena and I were down the road to the nearest chipper.

  110. No joke, we were.

  111. Back in time for the dancing.

  112. The banquet, which promised so much,

  113. had left us hungry.

  114. Now, on both those weddings,

  115. the two invitations seemed exactly the same.

  116. But they were really two invitations

  117. to two very different banquets.

  118. And now in this text today,

  119. we have two invitations which seem at first to be the same.

  120. But in reality,

  121. they're invitations to two polar opposite banquets.

  122. The question raised in this text for you and for me is this.

  123. Which invitation will you accept?

  124. There's no third option.

  125. It's either or.

  126. But our choice is more complex than we initially thought.

  127. And here's why.

  128. Because for the passing observer,

  129. the invitations appear to be identical.

  130. Look at verse 4.

  131. This is wisdom's invitation.

  132. She says,

  133. Let all who are simple come to my house.

  134. Look at verse 16 now.

  135. This is Lady Folly's invitation.

  136. Let all who are simple come to my house.

  137. Exactly the same thing, right?

  138. Identical.

  139. Now, King Solomon, I think, is showing us something.

  140. Foolishness often sounds like wisdom.

  141. It can use all the same words.

  142. It seems to promise us all the same things.

  143. Sometimes foolishness seems like skill for living well in God's world.

  144. In our world, we hear things like this.

  145. Just be yourself.

  146. Don't let anyone stop you.

  147. Follow your heart wherever it leads you.

  148. You are the master of your fate.

  149. You're the captain of your soul.

  150. You can be whoever you want to be.

  151. You deserve the best.

  152. Spend your money on getting the things you've always desired.

  153. These are the things we hear.

  154. This is the supposed wisdom of our time.

  155. Inviting us to follow.

  156. How can we discern which invitation is really wisdom?

  157. Well, here's how Solomon brings us behind the scenes to see the culture in each house.

  158. And when we do that, we begin to see some stark differences.

  159. Here's the first difference.

  160. There are different preparations for the banquets.

  161. Now, both claim to have prepared a banquet feast, but their preparations couldn't be any more different.

  162. Have a look in verses 1 to 6.

  163. Wisdom is busy.

  164. She is building a house, setting up its seven pillars.

  165. That symbolizes spaciousness, wealth, stability.

  166. She is preparing her meat.

  167. She's mixing her wine.

  168. She is self-sufficient.

  169. She borrows from no one.

  170. Then we find her setting her table and sending out her servants.

  171. We've got six action words here describing her diligent preparation.

  172. Contrast that to Lady Folly.

  173. In verse 14, she sits.

  174. Shanae.

  175. She sits.

  176. Well, actually, there is one more.

  177. Because in verse 13, it says,

  178. Folly is an unruly or literally a loud woman.

  179. She's simple and knows nothing.

  180. So Lady Folly sits and talks loudly about herself at the door of her house.

  181. She is too self-obsessed to care for her guests.

  182. She prefers to sit around talking about herself.

  183. In court terms, she's full of hot air.

  184. While Folly sits and jabbers on about itself, wisdom quietly, diligently prepares.

  185. That's the difference between wisdom and Folly.

  186. It's humble service versus selfish idleness.

  187. But we also see these hosts present different food.

  188. Lady Wisdom's house has no junk food.

  189. Right?

  190. Because of her preparation, she's able to dish up tender meat and tasty wine.

  191. This is homegrown food which satisfies hunger and tastes good.

  192. A substantial meal which symbolizes richness and fullness of life.

  193. In contrast, Lady Folly can only offer scraps that she has stolen from others.

  194. Look at verse 17.

  195. She says,

  196. You see, fake wisdom is always stealing from true wisdom.

  197. Just be yourself.

  198. Don't let anyone stop you.

  199. That's one of the things we hear today, right?

  200. There's a truth somewhere in that.

  201. God created us to be individually unique.

  202. He wants us to be our truest selves, whole and complete in him.

  203. But fake wisdom takes God out of it and says,

  204. You can decide who you want to be.

  205. The stone, water, and bread may temporarily satisfy, but not for long.

  206. It can compare to the feast that wisdom offers us.

  207. But these hosts also have different demands.

  208. Look at verse 5.

  209. Wisdom says,

  210. Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed.

  211. Leave your simple ways and you will live.

  212. Walk in the way of insight.

  213. Wisdom isn't a cushy people pleaser.

  214. Wisdom demands that we leave our simple ways behind us

  215. to join in her wholesome feast.

  216. Folly demands that we leave our straight ways behind us

  217. to join in her stolen feast.

  218. Can you see that difference?

  219. Folly doesn't call us onto anything greater.

  220. She just drags us down into the worst version of herself.

  221. She drags us down into selfish greed for more.

  222. Into navel gazing and obsession with image.

  223. Into secret lust and sexual sin.

  224. Into bending the rules to get ahead.

  225. She promises a feast if we join her.

  226. There's a sense of truth in her statement in verse 17

  227. because she says,

  228. Stolen water is sweet.

  229. At first.

  230. Food eaten in secret is delicious.

  231. Initially.

  232. Initially.

  233. But then it always lets us down.

  234. Then the guilt sets in.

  235. And the sweet taste turns sickly in our mouths.

  236. Folly drags us down into the gutter.

  237. Wisdom calls us upward.

  238. She is realistic about our simple-minded situation.

  239. Our wisdom deficit.

  240. Wisdom calls us off the path of folly

  241. and onto the path of wisdom.

  242. Proverbs 4.18 says this.

  243. The path of the righteous is like the morning sun

  244. shining ever brighter till the full light of day.

  245. Wisdom calls us upward to life.

  246. And this leads us to the last difference.

  247. Different destinies.

  248. Lady folly promises us a sweet taste in our mouths

  249. if we would walk in her door.

  250. But look at verse 18.

  251. But little do they know

  252. that the dead are in there.

  253. That her guests are deep

  254. in the realm of the dead.

  255. Piled up

  256. in the back of her house

  257. are the corpses

  258. of her guests.

  259. Some party that was.

  260. They're dead now.

  261. This host is venomous.

  262. She seduces the simple

  263. to come in her door

  264. but they don't know

  265. her malicious intent.

  266. It's not a laughing matter

  267. this banquet's business.

  268. It's not a trivial thing

  269. which path you follow

  270. wisdom or folly.

  271. Your destiny

  272. is death

  273. and destruction

  274. if you follow

  275. the path of fools.

  276. That's what the text says.

  277. But look at the difference

  278. of wisdom in verse 6.

  279. She says

  280. leave your simple ways

  281. and you

  282. will live.

  283. Verse 11

  284. through wisdom

  285. your days

  286. will be many

  287. and years

  288. will be added

  289. to your life.

  290. Feast

  291. on the richness

  292. of my table

  293. wisdom says

  294. and you will thrive.

  295. You'll know

  296. true life.

  297. This is the destiny

  298. of all those

  299. who accept

  300. my invitation

  301. and come into

  302. my house.

  303. if we step back

  304. and look at

  305. this wise

  306. host

  307. the preparations

  308. the food

  309. presented

  310. the demands

  311. made

  312. the destiny

  313. offered

  314. we cannot help

  315. but see

  316. Jesus

  317. as the wise

  318. and wealthy

  319. friend

  320. who has thought

  321. of everything

  322. we needed

  323. and prepared

  324. it in advance

  325. for us.

  326. Christ

  327. is the

  328. true host

  329. inviting us

  330. into his house

  331. to a far

  332. superior

  333. feast.

  334. He lacks

  335. nothing

  336. that we

  337. need.

  338. Colossians 2

  339. says this

  340. for in Christ

  341. all

  342. the fullness

  343. of God

  344. lives in bodily

  345. form

  346. and in Christ

  347. you

  348. have been

  349. brought

  350. to fullness.

  351. Jesus

  352. offers us

  353. no water

  354. down

  355. scraps.

  356. He offers

  357. himself

  358. his rich

  359. satisfying

  360. fullness.

  361. Jesus

  362. says in

  363. John 10

  364. 10

  365. the thief

  366. comes

  367. only to

  368. steal

  369. and kill

  370. and destroy.

  371. I have

  372. come

  373. that you

  374. may have

  375. life

  376. and have

  377. it to

  378. the full.

  379. He says

  380. in John

  381. 6

  382. I am

  383. the bread

  384. of life.

  385. Whoever

  386. comes to

  387. me

  388. will never

  389. go hungry.

  390. whoever

  391. believes in

  392. me

  393. will never

  394. be thirsty.

  395. How could

  396. we turn

  397. away

  398. an invitation

  399. from this

  400. richest,

  401. most generous,

  402. most loving,

  403. most honoring

  404. host?

  405. would we turn

  406. instead to

  407. the invitation

  408. of this

  409. world

  410. and all

  411. its glamorous

  412. promises

  413. which are

  414. hollow

  415. in the

  416. end?

  417. Two

  418. invitations.

  419. Which one

  420. will we

  421. accept?

  422. Maybe

  423. you're

  424. wondering

  425. how do

  426. I know

  427. if I've

  428. accepted

  429. wisdom's

  430. invitation?

  431. It's good

  432. that you

  433. should ask

  434. that.

  435. We need

  436. to.

  437. And the

  438. middle part

  439. of this

  440. text today

  441. actually

  442. tells us

  443. how.

  444. Solomon

  445. splits

  446. fools

  447. into

  448. different

  449. categories

  450. in the

  451. book of

  452. Proverbs.

  453. So in

  454. this chapter

  455. we have

  456. the simple

  457. or the

  458. uncommitted.

  459. And the

  460. hosts are

  461. calling out

  462. to the

  463. simple-minded

  464. and appealing

  465. to them

  466. to join

  467. their

  468. banquets.

  469. But we

  470. also have

  471. another type

  472. of fool

  473. in this

  474. chapter

  475. called

  476. the

  477. mocker.

  478. And let's

  479. see what

  480. we can

  481. learn about

  482. them

  483. now.

  484. Firstly,

  485. mockers

  486. refuse to

  487. repent.

  488. And they

  489. hate

  490. rebuke.

  491. Have a

  492. look with

  493. me from

  494. verse

  495. 7.

  496. Whoever

  497. corrects a

  498. mocker

  499. invites

  500. insults.

  501. whoever

  502. rebukes

  503. the wicked

  504. incurs

  505. abuse.

  506. Don't

  507. rebuke

  508. mockers

  509. or they

  510. will hate

  511. you.

  512. Rebuke

  513. the wise

  514. and they

  515. will love

  516. you.

  517. Instruct

  518. the wise

  519. and they

  520. will be

  521. wiser

  522. still.

  523. Teach

  524. the righteous

  525. and they

  526. will add

  527. to their

  528. learning.

  529. See,

  530. wisdom says

  531. to us,

  532. you are

  533. foolish

  534. and on

  535. the road

  536. to the

  537. destruction,

  538. leave your

  539. simple ways

  540. behind and

  541. come into

  542. my house.

  543. Mockers

  544. are insulted

  545. by that.

  546. They're

  547. offended by

  548. wisdom,

  549. telling them

  550. that they

  551. have an

  552. innate

  553. wisdom

  554. deficit.

  555. Mockers

  556. hit back,

  557. but they're

  558. fine.

  559. Yeah,

  560. might make

  561. a few

  562. mistakes here

  563. and there,

  564. but how

  565. dare you

  566. say I

  567. am on

  568. the road

  569. to

  570. destruction?

  571. I am

  572. a good

  573. person.

  574. See in

  575. verse 8,

  576. Mockers

  577. hate those

  578. who try

  579. to instruct

  580. them in

  581. how they

  582. need to

  583. change.

  584. If you

  585. point out

  586. some aspect

  587. of their

  588. foolishness

  589. to them,

  590. they get

  591. angry.

  592. They

  593. justify their

  594. own behavior

  595. or they

  596. fling back

  597. an angry

  598. dart of

  599. your faults

  600. and failings,

  601. never willing

  602. to admit

  603. their own.

  604. that's

  605. what a

  606. mocker

  607. is.

  608. Doesn't

  609. it sound

  610. familiar

  611. in our

  612. lives?

  613. See,

  614. the tragic

  615. thing about

  616. all this

  617. is that

  618. Solomon

  619. questions the

  620. point in

  621. even trying

  622. to rebuke

  623. them or

  624. instruct

  625. them.

  626. Solomon

  627. seems to

  628. say in

  629. verse 8,

  630. their heart

  631. is so

  632. hardened

  633. to wisdom,

  634. they seem

  635. beyond the

  636. point of

  637. repentance.

  638. repentance.

  639. This is

  640. tragic.

  641. God forbid

  642. that any

  643. one of us

  644. would be

  645. found

  646. among

  647. the

  648. mockers,

  649. cold,

  650. hardened,

  651. unwilling

  652. to repent

  653. at wisdom's

  654. rebuke.

  655. Ultimately,

  656. unwilling to

  657. repent at

  658. Christ's

  659. rebuke.

  660. How dare

  661. Jesus tell

  662. me I have

  663. a sin

  664. problem?

  665. How dare

  666. he say I

  667. am destined

  668. for hell?

  669. How dare

  670. he ask me

  671. to change

  672. my lifestyle

  673. or words

  674. or spending

  675. habits or

  676. attitudes?

  677. I will

  678. never accept

  679. his banquet

  680. invitation.

  681. It only

  682. insults me.

  683. I'd rather

  684. take the

  685. other invitation.

  686. That lady

  687. over there,

  688. she affirms

  689. me in my

  690. actions.

  691. She says

  692. I'm doing

  693. just fine.

  694. shudder at

  695. the thought

  696. of being

  697. in that

  698. number.

  699. Be warned.

  700. Verse 12.

  701. If you

  702. are a

  703. mocker,

  704. you alone

  705. will suffer.

  706. Here is the

  707. banquet you

  708. have chosen.

  709. death.

  710. It ends in

  711. eternal death.

  712. If that is

  713. you today,

  714. come on

  715. your knees

  716. before God

  717. and ask him

  718. to change

  719. your heart.

  720. Because if

  721. Jesus can

  722. change a

  723. heart of

  724. stone like

  725. Saul's on

  726. the road of

  727. Damascus,

  728. he can change

  729. mine and he

  730. can change

  731. yours.

  732. It's never

  733. too late

  734. to cry

  735. out to

  736. Jesus.

  737. And you

  738. know what?

  739. There is

  740. another response

  741. in this

  742. text.

  743. The wise.

  744. The wise

  745. willingly

  746. repent and

  747. they grow

  748. wiser still.

  749. Look at

  750. verse 8 and

  751. 9 again.

  752. Don't

  753. rebuke

  754. mockers that

  755. they will

  756. hate you.

  757. Rebuke

  758. the wise

  759. and they

  760. will love

  761. you.

  762. Instruct

  763. the wise.

  764. They'll

  765. be wiser

  766. still.

  767. Teach

  768. the righteous

  769. and they

  770. will add

  771. to their

  772. learning.

  773. That's the

  774. first thing

  775. we see.

  776. The wise

  777. love those

  778. who rebuke

  779. and instruct

  780. them.

  781. Here's how

  782. one way,

  783. how you know

  784. if you've

  785. accepted

  786. wisdom's

  787. invitation in

  788. Christ.

  789. Do you

  790. love those

  791. who rebuke

  792. you and

  793. instruct

  794. you?

  795. Do you

  796. welcome

  797. feedback on

  798. how you

  799. could be

  800. a better

  801. version of

  802. yourself?

  803. If you're

  804. married,

  805. do you

  806. ever ask

  807. your

  808. spouse,

  809. how can

  810. I love

  811. you better?

  812. What

  813. things do

  814. you see

  815. in my

  816. life that

  817. I need

  818. to change?

  819. If you're

  820. with a

  821. close friend,

  822. do you

  823. ever ask,

  824. friend,

  825. in what

  826. ways have

  827. I hurt

  828. you in

  829. our

  830. relationship?

  831. How can

  832. I be a

  833. better

  834. friend in

  835. person?

  836. If you're

  837. meeting with

  838. your elders

  839. in church

  840. or those

  841. who watch

  842. over your

  843. spiritual health,

  844. are you

  845. willing to

  846. accept feedback

  847. from them

  848. as to how

  849. you can

  850. grow in

  851. your faith?

  852. The wise

  853. love those

  854. who teach

  855. them,

  856. because they're

  857. teaching them

  858. how to get

  859. wiser still.

  860. It's all

  861. gain.

  862. Yes,

  863. it hurts

  864. to hear

  865. about our

  866. sin.

  867. That stings.

  868. It feels

  869. bad at the

  870. time,

  871. doesn't it?

  872. But if

  873. that other

  874. person truly

  875. loves you,

  876. it's okay

  877. to be

  878. broken in

  879. front of

  880. them.

  881. We could

  882. just pretend

  883. that we're

  884. faultless and

  885. blameless and

  886. the finished

  887. package,

  888. but we're

  889. only kidding

  890. ourselves.

  891. Embrace

  892. the opportunity

  893. to grow

  894. in wisdom.

  895. Are we

  896. actually doing

  897. that?

  898. Yes.

  899. Second thing

  900. we learn is

  901. that the wise

  902. are always

  903. growing in

  904. wisdom.

  905. Once you

  906. leave your

  907. simple ways

  908. and turn

  909. into wisdom's

  910. banquet,

  911. you begin

  912. feasting at

  913. her table.

  914. Wisdom

  915. begins to

  916. rub off

  917. on you

  918. more and

  919. more.

  920. Instruct

  921. the wise

  922. and they

  923. will be

  924. wiser

  925. still.

  926. Teach

  927. the righteous

  928. and they

  929. will add

  930. to their

  931. learning.

  932. Do you

  933. see that

  934. positive

  935. cause and

  936. effect

  937. cycle?

  938. The more

  939. you listen

  940. to wisdom,

  941. the wiser

  942. you get.

  943. Can we

  944. say today

  945. that we're

  946. growing in

  947. wisdom?

  948. Looking back

  949. over our

  950. lives,

  951. even a

  952. year,

  953. five years,

  954. ten years,

  955. can we

  956. see those

  957. signs of

  958. growth in

  959. wisdom?

  960. That's another

  961. sign that

  962. we've accepted

  963. wisdom's

  964. invitation.

  965. But here's

  966. the last one

  967. I think

  968. we're given.

  969. It's that

  970. the wise

  971. fear and

  972. know the

  973. Lord.

  974. Have a look

  975. at verse

  976. 10.

  977. Scholars tell

  978. us this is

  979. the most

  980. important verse

  981. actually in

  982. the whole

  983. book of

  984. Proverbs.

  985. The fear

  986. of the

  987. Lord is

  988. the beginning

  989. of wisdom.

  990. And knowledge

  991. of the

  992. Holy One

  993. is understanding.

  994. You see,

  995. fearing God

  996. and knowing

  997. him are the

  998. beginning of

  999. wisdom.

  1000. Wisdom is

  1001. ultimately about

  1002. knowing God.

  1003. God.

  1004. How do we

  1005. know God?

  1006. We know

  1007. him

  1008. ultimately

  1009. through

  1010. Christ.

  1011. Jesus

  1012. actually said,

  1013. he said,

  1014. if you knew

  1015. me, you

  1016. would know

  1017. my Father.

  1018. So do you

  1019. love Christ?

  1020. Do you

  1021. fear him,

  1022. that sense

  1023. of reverence

  1024. and honor,

  1025. that desire

  1026. to worship

  1027. him?

  1028. the wise

  1029. are those

  1030. who hear

  1031. his call

  1032. to repent

  1033. and freely

  1034. confess to

  1035. him their

  1036. foolishness.

  1037. They desire

  1038. to live

  1039. his way

  1040. from now

  1041. on.

  1042. That doesn't

  1043. mean that

  1044. wise people

  1045. are perfect

  1046. people.

  1047. They're still

  1048. learning wisdom,

  1049. right?

  1050. And Christ,

  1051. their most

  1052. generous

  1053. and patient

  1054. host,

  1055. has made

  1056. provision on

  1057. the cross

  1058. for all

  1059. their failures

  1060. past,

  1061. present,

  1062. and future.

  1063. the wise

  1064. come to

  1065. him

  1066. daily

  1067. for forgiveness,

  1068. which he

  1069. freely provides.

  1070. So do you

  1071. honor Jesus

  1072. as your

  1073. Lord and

  1074. King?

  1075. That is

  1076. the beginning

  1077. of wisdom.

  1078. And from

  1079. there,

  1080. we just

  1081. continue to

  1082. grow in

  1083. wisdom as

  1084. we walk

  1085. with Jesus

  1086. in whom

  1087. are hidden

  1088. all the

  1089. treasures

  1090. of wisdom

  1091. and knowledge.

  1092. So this

  1093. is what

  1094. the wise

  1095. are like.

  1096. They love

  1097. those who

  1098. rebuke and

  1099. instruct them.

  1100. They're

  1101. always growing

  1102. in wisdom.

  1103. They fear

  1104. the Lord.

  1105. Does that

  1106. description

  1107. match your

  1108. life and

  1109. mine?

  1110. I want to

  1111. finish with a

  1112. story,

  1113. and this is

  1114. one that

  1115. Jesus told.

  1116. If you

  1117. could turn

  1118. please to

  1119. Luke,

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  1120. chapter 14,

  1121. and verse

  1122. 15.

  1123. This is on

  1124. page 1048

  1125. in the

  1126. Red Church

  1127. Bible.

  1128. Luke,

    Luke 14:15

  1129. chapter 14,

  1130. verse 15.

  1131. And Johnny

  1132. was referring

  1133. to this

  1134. already this

  1135. morning.

  1136. Jesus says

  1137. that all

  1138. our wedding

  1139. banquets are

  1140. shadows of

  1141. the true

  1142. wedding banquet

  1143. to come

  1144. in heaven,

  1145. the greatest

  1146. feast imaginable,

  1147. when his

  1148. bride,

  1149. the church,

  1150. God's people,

  1151. those who

  1152. trusted in

  1153. Christ,

  1154. will be

  1155. united to

  1156. Jesus in

  1157. marriage

  1158. forever.

  1159. That's the

  1160. true marriage.

  1161. And the

  1162. call goes out

  1163. to the world

  1164. for all to

  1165. come to

  1166. Christ,

  1167. to be part

  1168. of this

  1169. marriage

  1170. forever.

  1171. And this

  1172. is what

  1173. Jesus is

  1174. referring to

  1175. as he

  1176. tells this

  1177. parable

  1178. in Luke,

    Luke 14:15

  1179. chapter 14,

  1180. verse 15.

  1181. When one

  1182. of those

  1183. at the

  1184. table

  1185. with him

  1186. heard this,

  1187. he said

  1188. to Jesus,

  1189. blessed

  1190. is the

  1191. one who

  1192. will eat

  1193. at the

  1194. feast in

  1195. the kingdom

  1196. of God.

  1197. Jesus

  1198. replied with

  1199. a story.

  1200. A certain

  1201. man was

  1202. preparing a

  1203. great banquet

  1204. and invited

  1205. many guests.

  1206. At the

  1207. time of the

  1208. banquet,

  1209. he sent

  1210. his servant

  1211. to tell

  1212. those who

  1213. had been

  1214. invited,

  1215. come,

  1216. for everything

  1217. is now

  1218. ready.

  1219. But they

  1220. all alike

  1221. began to

  1222. make excuses.

  1223. The first

  1224. said,

  1225. I have

  1226. just bought

  1227. a field.

  1228. I must

  1229. go and

  1230. see it.

  1231. Please

  1232. excuse me.

  1233. Another

  1234. said,

  1235. I've just

  1236. bought five

  1237. yoke of

  1238. oxen and

  1239. I'm on

  1240. my way to

  1241. try them

  1242. out.

  1243. Please

  1244. excuse me.

  1245. still

  1246. another

  1247. said,

  1248. oh,

  1249. I just

  1250. got

  1251. married.

  1252. I

  1253. can't

  1254. come.

  1255. The

  1256. servant

  1257. came back

  1258. and reported

  1259. this to

  1260. his master.

  1261. Then the

  1262. owner of

  1263. the house

  1264. became angry

  1265. and ordered

  1266. his servant

  1267. go out

  1268. quickly into

  1269. the streets

  1270. and alleys

  1271. of the town

  1272. and bring

  1273. in the

  1274. poor,

  1275. the crippled,

  1276. the blind

  1277. and the

  1278. lame.

  1279. sir,

  1280. the servant

  1281. said,

  1282. what you

  1283. ordered

  1284. has been

  1285. done,

  1286. but there

  1287. is still

  1288. room.

  1289. Then the

  1290. master told

  1291. his servants,

  1292. go out to

  1293. the roads

  1294. and country

  1295. lanes and

  1296. compel them

  1297. to come

  1298. in so

  1299. that my

  1300. house will

  1301. be full.

  1302. I tell

  1303. you,

  1304. not one

  1305. of those

  1306. who were

  1307. invited

  1308. will get

  1309. a taste

  1310. of my

  1311. banquet.

  1312. The

  1313. people

  1314. invited to

  1315. the

  1316. feasts

  1317. turned

  1318. down the

  1319. invitation,

  1320. right?

  1321. They

  1322. just thought

  1323. they didn't

  1324. need it.

  1325. Likewise,

  1326. how easy

  1327. is it for

  1328. us to

  1329. make excuses

  1330. for Jesus?

  1331. I have a

  1332. good life.

  1333. I've got

  1334. health.

  1335. I've got a

  1336. family,

  1337. money,

  1338. a career.

  1339. I don't

  1340. need Jesus

  1341. forgiveness,

  1342. his wisdom,

  1343. his life.

  1344. In the

  1345. end,

  1346. in the

  1347. story,

  1348. who was

  1349. it that

  1350. came in?

  1351. It was

  1352. the poor,

  1353. the bankrupt,

  1354. the sick,

  1355. people who

  1356. know they

  1357. are desperate.

  1358. They

  1359. gleefully

  1360. accepted the

  1361. invitation.

  1362. They

  1363. couldn't

  1364. believe they

  1365. were asked.

  1366. They left

  1367. everything and

  1368. ran and

  1369. joined the

  1370. feast.

  1371. Christ is

  1372. the true

  1373. host,

  1374. inviting us

  1375. into his

  1376. house to

  1377. a lavish

  1378. wedding feast

  1379. forever.

  1380. He is a

  1381. wealthy and

  1382. wise friend

  1383. who has

  1384. thought of

  1385. everything we

  1386. need in

  1387. advance and

  1388. prepared it

  1389. for us.

  1390. He lacks

  1391. nothing that

  1392. we need

  1393. and it

  1394. comes at

  1395. no cost

  1396. to us.

  1397. We don't

  1398. have to

  1399. pay our

  1400. way in

  1401. to the

  1402. feast or

  1403. settle the

  1404. bill afterwards.

  1405. No.

  1406. We are

  1407. bankrupt fools

  1408. with nothing

  1409. in our

  1410. hands to

  1411. offer him.

  1412. except to

  1413. simply reach

  1414. out and

  1415. receive his

  1416. mercy.

  1417. To bring

  1418. glory to

  1419. him as

  1420. the most

  1421. generous,

  1422. most

  1423. honoring

  1424. host who

  1425. has loved

  1426. us and

  1427. gave himself

  1428. up for us

  1429. so that we

  1430. could be his

  1431. bride,

  1432. his people

  1433. united in

  1434. love to

  1435. him forever.

  1436. which

  1437. invitation

  1438. will you

  1439. accept?

  1440. Will you

  1441. choose the

  1442. banquet of

  1443. this world

  1444. with all

  1445. its hollow

  1446. promises that

  1447. end in

  1448. death?

  1449. Or will

  1450. you be

  1451. seated at

  1452. the wedding

  1453. supper of

  1454. the Lamb

  1455. in heaven

  1456. in white

  1457. garments

  1458. made clean

  1459. by Jesus?

  1460. Let's

  1461. pray.

  1462. pray.

  1463. We're just

  1464. going to

  1465. pause to

  1466. consider our

  1467. response to

  1468. Jesus'

  1469. invitation.

  1470. salvation.

  1471. If you

  1472. haven't

  1473. accepted

  1474. him,

  1475. what would

  1476. hold you

  1477. back this

  1478. day?

  1479. Your

  1480. pride?

  1481. Your own

  1482. intuitions of

  1483. your own

  1484. goodness?

  1485. If you

  1486. have accepted

  1487. Jesus, are

  1488. you daily

  1489. feasting at

  1490. his banquet

  1491. of life,

  1492. of wisdom?

  1493. Speak to

  1494. him now.

  1495. Amen.

  1496. Amen.

  1497. Lord, forgive

  1498. us for

  1499. when we

  1500. turn to

  1501. the scraps

  1502. that this

  1503. world offers

  1504. us, as

  1505. if that's

  1506. the real

  1507. food.

  1508. Forgive us

  1509. for when

  1510. we turn

  1511. down your

  1512. rich,

  1513. satisfying

  1514. feast of

  1515. wisdom.

  1516. for

  1517. emptiness.

  1518. Help us

  1519. to daily

  1520. feast at

  1521. your table,

  1522. Jesus.

  1523. Filling our

  1524. hearts with

  1525. your words,

  1526. which satisfy

  1527. us and

  1528. bring us

  1529. life.

  1530. Let us

  1531. know the

  1532. overflowing

  1533. life that

  1534. you made

  1535. us to

  1536. live in

  1537. Christ Jesus

  1538. forever.

  1539. We ask

  1540. all these

  1541. things for

  1542. your glory

  1543. and for

  1544. our good.

  1545. Amen.
