  1. To preach, and as Tyler comes up, he'll be preaching from James chapter 1, from verses 22 to 27.

    James 1 chapter mention

  2. So if you have a Bible, please turn to that.

  3. And if you have a red church Bible, it's on page 1213.

  4. Thank you, Tyler.

  5. Well, good morning.

  6. Good morning. As Jonathan said, if you have your Bibles, I'd ask that you go ahead and open them up to the book of James.

  7. James chapter 1, and I'll be reading here from verse 22 in just a moment.

    James 1 chapter mention

  8. But before I dive in, I just want to take some time to thank Johnny and the other elders for the invitation to come and open God's word with you today.

  9. Consider it an honor and a privilege. Super excited to be here.

  10. And I bring you greetings from Carrick Tool Baptist Church, where my wife and I are members.

  11. So thank you so much for having us. It's really a privilege.

  12. Now, I haven't had the pleasure of meeting quite a few of you.

  13. So I just want to take a little bit of time to tell you about myself.

  14. So as you can tell from my accent, I'm originally from Donegal.

  15. No, I'm just kidding.

  16. I wasn't sure how that would land, but that was good.

  17. That's good.

  18. So no, I'm actually, me and my wife just recently relocated from North Carolina in the United States.

  19. So down in America's Southland, I am one of four siblings.

  20. So I have two brothers and a sister.

  21. And were you to ask my parents, they would probably tell you that out of all their children, I was the most energetic.

  22. Well, maybe a better word is hyper, actually.

  23. But I don't think I was a particularly disobedient child or anything like that.

  24. I just had loads and loads of energy.

  25. And one example from my childhood that I feel demonstrates this fact pretty well.

  26. It comes from a trip that my family took at the zoo when I was younger.

  27. So I was maybe four or five years old.

  28. So I don't have any real recollection of this event.

  29. But my mom, she swears that it happened.

  30. And so we're at the zoo.

  31. We're enjoying our time together.

  32. We're looking at all the wonderful animals.

  33. But because of what I just told you, that I'm incredibly energetic, being the energetic child I was,

  34. I'm running around everywhere, just back and forth, like a ping pong ball going back and forth between the paddles.

  35. And my mom, she's a wonderful mom.

  36. She's trying to rein me in.

  37. She's trying to stop me from causing a scene.

  38. And she runs after me.

  39. And she says, as the story goes, Tyler, stop running.

  40. And me, as I am jogging in place, I turn back to my mother and I say, I'm not running, mommy.

  41. And as I said, I don't remember this, but I can totally see myself doing it.

  42. It's kind of funny to think about, I'm there, this little boy, I'm hearing what my mom's saying.

  43. I'm just doing a really poor job of the whole listening part.

  44. And I'm sure I looked pretty ridiculous, pretty silly.

  45. She's telling me not to run.

  46. I'm screaming that I'm not running as I quite obviously run in place.

  47. So it's kind of a crazy picture.

  48. Well, James, in our passage today, he's going to paint another crazy picture.

  49. The absurdity of hearing God's word and failing to respond to it.

  50. And if I were to reduce the central idea of this passage down to a single sentence,

  51. this is what I would say, that we must listen to and obey God's word,

  52. demonstrating the genuineness of our faith by our behavior.

  53. I'll say that one more time.

  54. We must listen to and obey God's word,

  55. demonstrating the genuineness of our faith by our behavior.

  56. So for the rest of our time together, I want to unpack that idea.

  57. And I want, by God's spirit, my prayer is that we would leave this place with a greater understanding

  58. of what the Holy Spirit was saying to James's original audience

  59. and what's more, what he intends to teach us today.

  60. So look with me, begin reading with me here in chapter 1, verse 22.

  61. James writes,

  62. But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourself.

  63. Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer,

  64. he's like someone looking at his own face in a mirror.

  65. For he looks at himself, he goes away,

  66. and immediately forgets what kind of person he was.

  67. But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it,

  68. and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer who works,

  69. this person will be blessed in what he does.

  70. If anyone thinks he is religious without controlling his tongue,

  71. his religion is useless, and he deceives himself.

  72. Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this,

  73. to look after orphans and widows in their distress,

  74. and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

  75. Let's pray together as we open God's word.

  76. Dear God, thank you so much for the opportunity to come

  77. and open your word with these brothers and sisters.

  78. I ask that you would, by the power of your spirit,

  79. make clear the message that you have for us this morning.

  80. Not a word from me, God, but a word from you to your people.

  81. And God, help us to be receptive to the message from your word,

  82. but would you also, by the power of your spirit,

  83. empower us to respond appropriately.

  84. And God, I ask all these things in the name of your son, Jesus.

  85. Amen.

  86. So we've already noted that the idea James is driving at for his readers

  87. is that we must listen to and obey God's word,

  88. demonstrating the genuineness of our faith by our behavior.

  89. But how is it that that unfolds throughout our passage?

  90. Well, to give a little bit of context,

  91. James has indicated in the opening verses of his epistle

  92. that it's primarily believers he has in mind as he writes.

  93. And he tells these believers that it is God,

  94. the one who's the source of every good gift

  95. whom they have to thank for their salvation.

  96. You can look in chapter one, verse 18.

  97. He tells them,

  98. by his own choice,

  99. by his own choice,

  100. he gave us birth by the word of truth

  101. so that we would be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

  102. And now, at the outset of our text today,

  103. he begins to describe two individuals

  104. and their very different responses to the word of God.

  105. So let's take a look at that first individual in verses 23 and 24.

  106. James says,

  107. because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer,

  108. he's like someone looking at his own face in a mirror.

  109. For he looks at himself,

  110. he goes away,

  111. and immediately forgets what kind of person he was.

  112. Here in verses 23 and 24,

  113. James uses this very interesting analogy

  114. to illustrate the absurdity of hearing God's word

  115. and failing to respond to it.

  116. He says that the one who hears it

  117. and fails to respond to it,

  118. it's like someone who stares at their own reflection,

  119. they walk away,

  120. and they forget what they've seen.

  121. Now, when you and I read the word mirror,

  122. we think of this really nice and crystal clear,

  123. perfectly reflective thing

  124. that we probably have all of us hanging in our bathrooms now.

  125. But when James's original audience

  126. would have heard this word mirror,

  127. something quite different would have come to their minds.

  128. Because mirrors in the ancient world,

  129. they weren't made of the glass as we know it today.

  130. They were made from metal,

  131. which had been polished to offer a reflection.

  132. So rather than this crystal clear likeness

  133. and what we're used to today,

  134. these mirrors would have provided a murky image at best.

  135. And if you manage to see yourself adequately

  136. in these little mirrors,

  137. adequately enough to find any sort of cosmetic flaw,

  138. well, then of course you would address it.

  139. And in this passage,

  140. James is highlighting for his readers

  141. how absurd it is to give one's attention

  142. to one's appearance in the mirror,

  143. recognize that an issue needs to be addressed,

  144. and then not do anything about it.

  145. It's just not something that you would do.

  146. And I think that for most of us,

  147. this is an image that we can pretty intuitively grasp.

  148. But just to put it in more modern terms,

  149. I want to give you just an example here.

  150. So imagine that you're out

  151. for a nice Italian dinner with your friends.

  152. And as you're eating spaghetti,

  153. some sauce that maybe drops onto your chin,

  154. and one of your friends notices.

  155. And because they're a good friend,

  156. they point it out to you.

  157. So maybe you even head to the bathroom

  158. and you look in the mirror

  159. and you see you've got this massive glob

  160. of spaghetti sauce on your chin.

  161. But instead of seeing the sauce,

  162. wiping it from your face,

  163. you walk right back out,

  164. you ignore the problem,

  165. and you continue to eat.

  166. This would be crazy.

  167. It just isn't something you would do.

  168. And in the same way,

  169. to hear from God's word

  170. and to recognize a problem

  171. but fail to do anything about it,

  172. it just doesn't make any sense.

  173. And so after giving this example

  174. of the one who hears and fails to respond,

  175. James describes for his readers another individual.

  176. So let's look again at verse 25.

  177. Verse 25 says,

  178. But the one who looks intently

  179. into the perfect law of freedom

  180. and perseveres in it

  181. and is not a forgetful hearer

  182. but a doer who works,

  183. this person will be blessed in what he does.

  184. Now there's quite a bit to unpack in this verse,

  185. but already at first glance,

  186. we can see the difference between this individual

  187. and the individual described in verses 23 and 24.

  188. This person doesn't walk away from the word,

  189. failing to take action.

  190. This person looks to the word

  191. and acts appropriately in response,

  192. and James tells us that they're blessed for it.

  193. So let's revisit our analogy

  194. of the fancy Italian dinner.

  195. So remember while you're eating some spaghetti sauce,

  196. it's dripped onto your chin

  197. and one of your friends has noticed, right?

  198. Then after you have been informed of this tragedy,

  199. you went to the bathroom and you check things out.

  200. But imagine that this time

  201. you see the sauce on your chin

  202. and instead of walking out

  203. without addressing the issue,

  204. you wipe it from your face

  205. and you return to the table.

  206. This makes a whole lot more sense.

  207. Having looked into God's word

  208. and recognized a problem,

  209. this here that James describes for us

  210. in verse 25

  211. has chosen to address the issue.

  212. Now you may have noticed

  213. that James uses this very interesting phrase

  214. in verse 25.

  215. He says,

  216. perfect law of freedom.

  217. What does this mean?

  218. Because I think that

  219. if you and I are honest,

  220. we read the word law

  221. and we start to get a little nervous here.

  222. Is James urging us

  223. to adopt some sort of legalistic mentality

  224. or encouraging us

  225. to keep some sort of checklist of behaviors

  226. by which we earn God's favor?

  227. Well, I don't think that's what James

  228. is getting at at all.

  229. In fact, I think that these words

  230. he chooses to use,

  231. perfect and freedom,

  232. I think they're intentional and significant.

  233. Because by the use of these particular modifiers,

  234. James helps his readers

  235. to see the law

  236. in light of Christ's redemptive work.

  237. Christ's ultimate fulfillment

  238. of the law on our behalf.

  239. In one scholar,

  240. he says it this way,

  241. though the Old Testament law

  242. was holy and righteous and good,

  243. it had no power by itself

  244. to enable sinful people

  245. to conform to it.

  246. Thus, the Old Testament law,

  247. it did not liberate God's people,

  248. but it enslaved them,

  249. as Paul taught.

  250. But the law is one of liberty

  251. when it comes along

  252. with the word of the gospel

  253. and the power of the Holy Spirit

  254. to change hearts.

  255. Now, if you're here this morning

  256. and you have placed your faith

  257. and your trust in Jesus Christ,

  258. I want to stop and take a few moments

  259. to remind you of something

  260. that if you're anything like me,

  261. this is something that you know,

  262. but you are so often tempted to forget.

  263. As we work through James' teaching

  264. in this text,

  265. the idea isn't that we look

  266. into the mirror of God's word,

  267. we grit our teeth,

  268. and we try harder to obey

  269. to get on God's good side.

  270. Yes, we should desire

  271. to follow God's commands,

  272. and if you are in Christ,

  273. you will want to do so.

  274. But here's the thing.

  275. You don't do this

  276. to earn God's favor.

  277. Believers have been made right

  278. before God

  279. by placing their faith

  280. and their trust

  281. in the only one

  282. who ever kept God's law perfectly,

  283. Jesus Christ.

  284. And now we desire

  285. to keep God's commands

  286. because we've been given

  287. an incredible gift.

  288. We've been made right with God

  289. and adopted into his family.

  290. And what's more,

  291. we've been given

  292. the Holy Spirit

  293. who is day to day

  294. working to make us

  295. more like Jesus.

  296. Paul,

  297. as he's writing

  298. to the church in Philippi

  299. in chapter 2,

  300. verse 13,

  301. he says it this way.

  302. It is God

  303. who is working in you

  304. both to will

  305. and to work

  306. according to his good purpose.

  307. We aren't doing this

  308. in reliance

  309. on our own strength.

  310. Now at this point,

  311. I want to pause briefly again

  312. because I know

  313. that there are likely

  314. some here today

  315. who have been trying

  316. to earn God's favor.

  317. They've been relying

  318. on their own strength

  319. to get on God's good side.

  320. You've worked so hard

  321. to do all of the right things,

  322. to follow all of the rules,

  323. to get yourself

  324. into God's good graces,

  325. to tilt the scales.

  326. If you find yourself

  327. in that camp this morning,

  328. please hear me.

  329. You will never do enough.

  330. You can't do it.

  331. Because as James goes on

  332. to tell us

  333. in chapter 2,

  334. verse 10,

  335. if you've broken

  336. just one of God's commands,

  337. it's as if you've broken

  338. the whole lot.

  339. You cannot keep

  340. God's laws perfectly.

  341. You cannot do it.

  342. But there is one who did.

  343. Jesus lived

  344. a sinless life

  345. in perfect obedience

  346. to the Father.

  347. And he died a cruel

  348. and a painful death,

  349. a death that you

  350. and I deserved.

  351. But he didn't stay dead.

  352. After three days,

  353. he walked out

  354. of the tomb alive.

  355. And now,

  356. for those who would

  357. turn to him

  358. in faith,

  359. he offers

  360. forgiveness

  361. and restored

  362. relationship

  363. with God.

  364. He received

  365. sin's penalty

  366. on our behalf

  367. so we can now

  368. receive his righteousness.

  369. Praise God.

  370. God.

  371. So having

  372. explained

  373. to his readers

  374. that the word

  375. of God

  376. needs to be acted on

  377. and not just heard

  378. and forgotten

  379. through the example

  380. of these two hearers

  381. in verses 22

  382. to 25,

  383. James gets

  384. really,

  385. really practical.

  386. He provides

  387. for his readers

  388. an example

  389. both of a hearer

  390. of the word

  391. and a doer

  392. of the word.

  393. Let's look again

  394. at verses 26

  395. and 27.

  396. James states,

  397. if anyone thinks

  398. he is religious

  399. without controlling

  400. his tongue,

  401. his religion

  402. is useless

  403. and he deceives

  404. himself.

  405. Pure

  406. and undefiled

  407. religion

  408. before God

  409. the Father

  410. is this.

  411. To look

  412. after orphans

  413. and widows

  414. in their distress

  415. and to keep

  416. oneself

  417. unstained

  418. from the world.

  419. In these verses,

  420. James contrasts

  421. for us

  422. the one

  423. who has

  424. a legitimate

  425. and a God-honoring

  426. religion

  427. and the one

  428. whose religion

  429. is simply

  430. counterfeit.

  431. And how is it

  432. that you and I

  433. can tell the difference?

  434. We can tell

  435. the difference

  436. by examining

  437. behavior.

  438. So let's take

  439. a look at that

  440. example of

  441. counterfeit

  442. religion first.

  443. James uses

  444. some pretty

  445. strong imagery

  446. in this passage

  447. to get his

  448. point across

  449. here in verse

  450. 26.

  451. He says that

  452. the one who

  453. claims to be

  454. religious,

  455. but they can't

  456. get a hold

  457. of their tongue,

  458. that person

  459. demonstrates that

  460. their religion

  461. isn't the real

  462. deal.

  463. people.

  464. Now,

  465. if you're like

  466. me,

  467. it may strike

  468. you as a

  469. bit strange

  470. that an

  471. inability to

  472. control one's

  473. tongue is the

  474. example James

  475. chooses to use

  476. in this passage.

  477. But throughout

  478. his epistle,

  479. he's reminded

  480. us of the

  481. importance of

  482. the human

  483. tongue and

  484. its great

  485. power both

  486. for good

  487. and evil.

  488. people.

  489. for example,

  490. in James

    James 3:2

  491. chapter 3

  492. verse 2,

  493. he tells us

  494. that one's

  495. ability to

  496. control the

  497. tongue is an

  498. indicator of

  499. their ability

  500. to control the

  501. rest of their

  502. body in a way

  503. that's honoring

  504. to God.

  505. God.

  506. He says,

  507. for we all

  508. stumble in

  509. many ways.

  510. If anyone

  511. does not

  512. stumble in

  513. what he

  514. says,

  515. he's mature,

  516. able also

  517. to control

  518. the whole

  519. body.

  520. And in

  521. James chapter

    James 3:9–12

  522. 3,

  523. verses 9

  524. to 12,

  525. this is how

  526. he puts

  527. it.

  528. That with

  529. the tongue

  530. we bless

  531. our Lord

  532. and Father

  533. and with

  534. it we curse

  535. people who

  536. are made

  537. in God's

  538. likeness.

  539. Blessing

  540. and cursing

  541. come out

  542. of the same

  543. mouth,

  544. my brothers

  545. and sisters.

  546. These things

  547. should not

  548. be this way.

  549. Does a

  550. spring pour

  551. out sweet

  552. and bitter

  553. water from

  554. the same

  555. opening?

  556. And of

  557. course,

  558. the obvious

  559. answer to

  560. James'

  561. rhetorical

  562. question is

  563. no,

  564. it does

  565. not.

  566. Jesus

  567. himself in

  568. Matthew

    Matthew 15:18

  569. chapter 15

  570. verse 18,

  571. he tells

  572. us that

  573. what comes

  574. out of

  575. the mouth

  576. comes from

  577. the heart

  578. and this

  579. defiles a

  580. person.

  581. So we

  582. see that

  583. the tongue,

  584. though it's

  585. seemingly

  586. small and

  587. insignificant,

  588. it's actually

  589. incredibly

  590. powerful and

  591. what's more,

  592. it reveals the

  593. condition of

  594. one's heart.

  595. So that's the

  596. counterfeit

  597. religion.

  598. religion.

  599. So how is

  600. true and

  601. legitimate

  602. religion

  603. manifested?

  604. Well,

  605. according to

  606. James,

  607. it's manifested

  608. by care for

  609. the widows and

  610. orphans of the

  611. world in

  612. moral purity.

  613. If you look

  614. again with me

  615. at verse

  616. 27, this is

  617. what James

  618. says.

  619. Pure and

  620. undefiled

  621. religion before

  622. God the

  623. Father is

  624. this, that

  625. we look

  626. after orphans

  627. and widows

  628. in their

  629. distress and

  630. to keep

  631. oneself unstained

  632. from the

  633. world.

  634. Widows and

  635. orphans had

  636. an incredibly

  637. difficult life

  638. in the

  639. ancient world.

  640. They were

  641. hard-pressed

  642. in almost

  643. every way,

  644. politically,

  645. socially,

  646. economically.

  647. And God,

  648. throughout the

  649. scriptures,

  650. he demonstrates

  651. the importance

  652. that he places

  653. on their

  654. care.

  655. So it's not

  656. really surprising

  657. that James

  658. highlights the

  659. importance of

  660. their care

  661. here.

  662. I think it's

  663. important to

  664. remember,

  665. though, that

  666. James' intention

  667. isn't to give

  668. an exhaustive

  669. list of the

  670. ways a

  671. legitimate and

  672. a God-honoring

  673. religion is

  674. presented.

  675. This can be

  676. thought of

  677. sort of a

  678. summary statement

  679. which gives

  680. some examples

  681. of behavior

  682. that's characteristic

  683. of a true and

  684. vibrant faith,

  685. but there are,

  686. of course,

  687. other ways.

  688. And it could

  689. be that James'

  690. focus on

  691. serving the

  692. downtrodden

  693. here,

  694. it sort of

  695. anticipates his

  696. teaching that

  697. he'll go on

  698. to do on

  699. favoritism in

  700. chapter 2,

  701. verses 1 to

  702. 9,

  703. because in

  704. that text

  705. there are

  706. indications

  707. that James'

  708. readers,

  709. they may have

  710. been giving

  711. preferential

  712. treatment to

  713. the wealthy.

  714. So here,

  715. James,

  716. in presenting

  717. service to

  718. widows and

  719. orphans as

  720. evidence of

  721. true and

  722. God-honoring

  723. religion,

  724. he might be

  725. pushing back

  726. on that

  727. tendency

  728. among his

  729. readers.

  730. But at

  731. any rate,

  732. what's clear

  733. from James'

  734. comments here

  735. in verses

  736. 26 and

  737. 27 is that

  738. one's behavior

  739. is an indication

  740. of the

  741. genuineness of

  742. their faith.

  743. God-nosed

  744. God-nosed

  745. So as we

  746. begin to

  747. bring our

  748. time in

  749. the word

  750. to a

  751. close,

  752. I want to

  753. leave you

  754. with a few

  755. more points

  756. of application.

  757. And one

  758. of the

  759. things I

  760. love about

  761. this passage

  762. is you

  763. don't have

  764. to dig

  765. very deep

  766. to discover

  767. the application.

  768. What I

  769. mean to

  770. say is that

  771. you do not

  772. have to

  773. look very

  774. long and

  775. very hard

  776. at this

  777. passage before

  778. you start to

  779. get a pretty

  780. good idea of

  781. the response

  782. that James

  783. wanted from

  784. his original

  785. readers and

  786. the response

  787. that God

  788. wants from

  789. us.

  790. And I

  791. mentioned at

  792. the very

  793. beginning of

  794. our time the

  795. central idea

  796. and we must

  797. listen to and

  798. obey God's

  799. word.

  800. Demonstrating the

  801. genuineness of

  802. our faith by

  803. our behavior.

  804. And brothers

  805. and sisters,

  806. this sounds so

  807. incredibly simple,

  808. but if we're

  809. honest with

  810. ourselves,

  811. this is

  812. incredibly

  813. difficult.

  814. It's a battle

  815. that we fight

  816. every single

  817. day, a

  818. constant struggle

  819. for each

  820. and every

  821. one of us.

  822. In verses

  823. 22 to 25,

  824. we see that

  825. merely hearing

  826. the word of

  827. God and not

  828. doing what it

  829. says is

  830. foolish.

  831. It's as

  832. foolish as

  833. looking in a

  834. mirror, seeing

  835. that spaghetti

  836. sauce on

  837. your chin

  838. and choosing

  839. not to wipe

  840. it away,

  841. going right

  842. back to the

  843. table without

  844. taking any

  845. steps to

  846. address the

  847. problem.

  848. But the

  849. person who

  850. acts appropriately

  851. to God's

  852. word, responds

  853. and does what

  854. it says, that

  855. person will be

  856. blessed.

  857. Friends, our

  858. desire should be

  859. not to just

  860. listen to the

  861. word of God,

  862. but to actually

  863. do what it

  864. says, to

  865. listen to the

  866. word and

  867. respond appropriately,

  868. demonstrating our

  869. faith to a

  870. watching world.

  871. So how does

  872. this play out

  873. in our daily

  874. life?

  875. Well, let's

  876. say that you're

  877. at work, you're

  878. reading your

  879. Bible, maybe on

  880. your lunch

  881. break, and you

  882. come across a

  883. portion of

  884. scripture that

  885. talks about having

  886. a quick temper.

  887. Maybe you're in

  888. James 1, verses

    James 1:19–21

  889. 19 to 21.

  890. You read the

  891. passage and you

  892. recognize that

  893. your tendency to

  894. blow up and

  895. lash out against

  896. your coworkers in

  897. anger is sinful.

  898. It's not God

  899. honoring.

  900. It's not

  901. appropriate in

  902. the sight of

  903. God.

  904. Well, you have

  905. two choices.

  906. You can close

  907. your Bible and

  908. ignore the

  909. teaching of God's

  910. word on this

  911. issue, or you

  912. can, by the

  913. power of the

  914. Holy Spirit, take

  915. steps to address

  916. your anger.

  917. In our passage,

  918. James makes

  919. clear which one

  920. of those is the

  921. appropriate response

  922. to God's word.

  923. And if we

  924. consider verses

  925. 26 to 27 of

  926. our passage, where

  927. James, he teaches

  928. us that our

  929. behavior, it

  930. demonstrates the

  931. genuineness of

  932. our faith.

  933. I think that

  934. James' instruction

  935. in these verses,

  936. it highlights the

  937. need for self-reflection

  938. in our Christian

  939. lives.

  940. Because let's

  941. return just for a

  942. moment to that

  943. individual with an

  944. anger issue.

  945. What that person

  946. and every one of

  947. us needs to ask

  948. ourselves is,

  949. am I demonstrating

  950. that my faith is

  951. the real deal in

  952. the way I am

  953. living my life?

  954. Does my behavior

  955. indicate that I

  956. possess a genuine

  957. faith?

  958. Friends, let us

  959. strive by God's

  960. grace and the

  961. power of the

  962. Holy Spirit to

  963. be able to

  964. answer yes.

  965. Let's pray

  966. together.

  967. Dear God, would

  968. you confront us

  969. with the truth

  970. that we have met

  971. in this passage?

  972. Would you

  973. forgive us for

  974. the many times

  975. when we've acted

  976. like this man who

  977. looks into your

  978. word and immediately

  979. forgets what it

  980. says?

  981. God, forgive us

  982. for the times when

  983. our words indicated

  984. that our faith was

  985. genuine, but our

  986. actions told another

  987. story altogether.

  988. God, would you, by

  989. your grace, continue

  990. to sanctify us,

  991. making us more like

  992. Jesus every day?

  993. We ask all these

  994. things in his name.

  995. Amen.

  996. Amen.

  997. Amen.

  998. Amen.

  999. Thank you.
