  1. So if you turn in your Bibles to 2 Corinthians chapter 1, starting in verse 23 through to chapter 2, verse 11.

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  2. And I stake my life on it, that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth.

  3. Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.

  4. So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.

  5. For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved?

  6. I wrote as I did, so that when I came I would not be distressed by those who should have made me rejoice.

  7. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.

  8. For I wrote to you out of great distress and anguish of heart, and with many tears,

  9. not to grieve you, but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

  10. If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent,

  11. not to put it too severely.

  12. The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient.

  13. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

  14. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.

  15. Another reason I wrote to you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.

  16. Anyone you forgive, I also forgive.

  17. And what I have forgiven, if there was anything to forgive,

  18. I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,

  19. in order that Satan might not outwit us,

  20. for we are not unaware of his schemes.

  21. Thank you, Kirsty.

  22. Let's keep our Bibles open.

  23. Last week, we were looking at how we can comfort one another.

  24. Today, we're going to be thinking about how we can love one another well.

  25. So let's pray and ask for God's help.

  26. Father, would you pour out your spirit upon us generously for our good,

  27. that we may focus upon you today,

  28. and that we may be attuned to your voice.

  29. Father, do a work amongst us for our good and for your glory.

  30. Amen.

  31. Do you love me?

  32. Thanks, Connor. Good man.

  33. Yes, I'm talking about me.

  34. Do you care about me?

  35. If I was ill, would you come and visit me?

  36. If I was discouraged, would you support me?

  37. If I was in financial trouble, would you try to help?

  38. And I'm glad, at least some of you are nodding your heads.

  39. That's encouraging.

  40. Of course you would,

  41. because I have already experienced much love from you,

  42. and I know you have experienced the same.

  43. That's what it means to be a member of a local church.

  44. You see, the church is a family,

  45. an identifiable, committed family of brothers and sisters

  46. who love the Lord Jesus

  47. and love each other.

  48. Now here's the big question.

  49. Do you love me enough to correct me

  50. when I'm out of line?

  51. Do you love me enough to discipline me

  52. if I am unrepentant?

  53. Do you love me enough to forgive my wrongs

  54. and restore me?

  55. You see, true love,

  56. genuine church family love

  57. will do everything to ensure

  58. that we are in a joy-filled,

  59. right relationship with Christ.

  60. We will do everything to ensure

  61. that one another are in a joy-filled,

  62. right relationship with Christ.

  63. Look at Paul's desire for the church

  64. in chapter 1, verse 24.

  65. There we go.

  66. Verse 24.

  67. Not that we lord it over your faith.

  68. He says we're not being pushy

  69. or being superior.

  70. But we work with you

  71. for your joy.

  72. Because it is by faith

  73. you stand firm.

  74. Paul's heart's desire

  75. is to do all that he possibly can

  76. to ensure they have a joy-filled life

  77. by being secure in the faith.

  78. Or we could summarize it like this.

  79. our goal, the motto of this church

  80. and what a great motto it would be

  81. is that the church would be full of joy

  82. as you stand firm in Christ.

  83. That's what we long for one another.

  84. You see, the greatest love

  85. that we can have for each other

  86. is to ensure that we're standing in Christ,

  87. not falling from Christ.

  88. And if you love me,

  89. you will do whatever it takes,

  90. even if that means

  91. showing me my sin.

  92. You see, the absence of correction

  93. and restoration

  94. is not loving.

  95. To ignore things

  96. is unloving.

  97. It's unkind for a brother or sister

  98. to ignore one another

  99. if we're drifting from Christ.

  100. You could imagine a father

  101. out for a walk with his toddler

  102. and the toddler

  103. goes to run across the road.

  104. The father grabs him

  105. because the father loves his child.

  106. A doctor warning a patient

  107. to change his diet,

  108. otherwise they'll have a heart attack,

  109. is a loving intervention.

  110. It would be unloving to do

  111. or to say nothing, right?

  112. Now, standing firm in Christ

  113. means that we get alongside each other,

  114. support one another,

  115. encourage one another,

  116. but sometimes

  117. it's going to require hard conversations.

  118. We can call it

  119. tough love.

  120. You see, Paul was concerned

  121. that some of the church

  122. were drifting.

  123. Instead of standing firm in Christ,

  124. they were falling from Christ

  125. and he was grieving.

  126. There was no joy.

  127. They needed love.

  128. Out of deep concern,

  129. Paul had made a painful visit

  130. to the church.

  131. Chapter 2, verse 1.

  132. Can you see there

  133. the reference he makes there

  134. at the end

  135. where he talks about

  136. a painful visit

  137. that he had made?

  138. And as a follow-up

  139. to this painful visit,

  140. he had to write

  141. a tearful letter.

  142. Chapter 2, verse 4.

  143. For I wrote to you

  144. out of great distress

  145. and anguish of heart

  146. and with many tears.

  147. Paul had to make some,

  148. say some difficult things

  149. while he made this painful visit.

  150. And he had to say difficult things

  151. as he wrote his tearful letter.

  152. In fact, Paul made another plan

  153. to come back and visit the church

  154. to see if they had put

  155. everything in order

  156. to make sure

  157. that they were all standing

  158. in Christ.

  159. We read about that

  160. in chapter 1, verse 16.

  161. Have a look there.

  162. Chapter 1, verse 16.

  163. He says,

  164. I wanted to visit you

  165. on my way to Macedonia

  166. and to come back to you

  167. from Macedonia

  168. and then to let you send me

  169. on my way to Judea.

  170. So during his travels,

  171. he was going to take a detour

  172. and go and visit the church

  173. in Corinth.

  174. But he changed his mind.

  175. He decided not to visit them.

  176. And here's why.

  177. Chapter 1, verse 23.

  178. I call God as my witness

  179. and I stake my life on it.

  180. I am telling you

  181. the absolute truth

  182. that it was in order

  183. to spare you

  184. that I did not return

  185. to Corinth.

  186. Chapter 2, verse 1.

  187. So I made up my mind

  188. that I would not make

  189. another painful visit

  190. to you.

  191. You see,

  192. he loved them so much

  193. that he didn't want

  194. to have to visit

  195. and have to go over

  196. old ground again

  197. and rebuke them

  198. and say,

  199. guys,

  200. you shouldn't be doing this.

  201. He said,

  202. I hope that you would have

  203. listened and done

  204. the right thing

  205. and turned back

  206. to Christ.

  207. Despite what they

  208. thought of Paul,

  209. he was for them,

  210. not against them.

  211. Yes, he had many

  212. hard things to say,

  213. but it was for their joy.

  214. It was to see them

  215. built up in their faith

  216. and encouraged.

  217. And that's what

  218. loving relationships

  219. are all about.

  220. It's a commitment

  221. to do all that we can

  222. to make sure

  223. we are firm

  224. in the faith.

  225. faith.

  226. As our motto said,

  227. our goal is that

  228. we would be

  229. full of joy

  230. as we stand

  231. firm in Christ.

  232. how joyful it is

  233. to know that our

  234. brothers and sisters

  235. are walking with Christ,

  236. to stand with them

  237. on that day

  238. when the risen Lord

  239. Jesus comes again.

  240. What joy it will be

  241. to know that you're there

  242. and I'm there.

  243. Well, how can we ensure

  244. that we keep on

  245. and have a joy-filled life?

  246. Well, two things

  247. we're going to look at.

  248. First,

  249. loving correction.

  250. Loving correction.

  251. Look at chapter 2,

  252. verse 3.

  253. He says,

  254. I wrote as I did

  255. so that when I came

  256. I would not be distressed

  257. by those who should

  258. make me rejoice.

  259. He said,

  260. look,

  261. I had to write

  262. difficult things

  263. but it was all

  264. for the hope

  265. that you would have

  266. listened and changed

  267. and brought me

  268. great joy.

  269. In fact,

  270. end of verse 3,

  271. I had confidence

  272. in all of you

  273. that you all

  274. would share

  275. my joy.

  276. I was confident

  277. that you would

  278. listen

  279. and that you would

  280. be standing firm

  281. in Christ.

  282. Now, we don't know

  283. what Paul said

  284. in his letter

  285. but we do know

  286. that it was

  287. very difficult

  288. for him to write.

  289. Look at verse 4.

  290. For I wrote to you

  291. out of great distress

  292. and anguish

  293. of heart

  294. and with many tears

  295. not to grieve you

  296. but to let you know

  297. the depth

  298. of my love

  299. for you.

  300. My father used

  301. to remind us

  302. of kids

  303. as when we were little

  304. of an experience

  305. that he had

  306. when he was a child.

  307. One day

  308. his two pals

  309. came to the door

  310. knocked on the door

  311. asking him

  312. to come out

  313. and play.

  314. They were going

  315. to go down

  316. to the river

  317. and all excited

  318. my dad ran

  319. to his mum

  320. Michael,

  321. I'm sorry

  322. you can't go.

  323. It's not safe.

  324. My dad

  325. was upset

  326. and my mum

  327. was even upset

  328. for my dad

  329. because he was upset.

  330. Please

  331. can I go?

  332. I'm sorry

  333. Michael

  334. you can't go

  335. you've got

  336. to stay

  337. at home.

  338. Later on

  339. that day

  340. there was

  341. another knock

  342. on the door

  343. a neighbour

  344. to say

  345. that one

  346. of his friends

  347. had fallen

  348. in the river

  349. and drowned.

  350. You see

  351. my dad's mum

  352. could have

  353. ignored

  354. the danger.

  355. she could have

  356. turned a blind eye

  357. and said

  358. sure Michael

  359. off you go

  360. enjoy yourself

  361. and hoped

  362. for the best.

  363. But she did

  364. the right thing

  365. didn't she?

  366. Though it caused

  367. her some distress

  368. it was the most

  369. loving

  370. thing

  371. to do.

  372. Even though

  373. it hurt

  374. my dad

  375. in that very

  376. moment

  377. that he couldn't

  378. go

  379. it was the most

  380. loving

  381. thing

  382. he needed.

  383. You see

  384. Paul knew

  385. that his

  386. correction

  387. would be

  388. painful.

  389. He knew

  390. it would

  391. hurt them

  392. but it

  393. caused him

  394. greater pain

  395. having to be

  396. the one

  397. to confront

  398. them.

  399. It wasn't

  400. easy.

  401. Look at

  402. verse 4

  403. I wrote

  404. out of

  405. great distress

  406. and anguish

  407. of heart

  408. and with

  409. many tears

  410. things.

  411. Why did

  412. he put

  413. him through

  414. so much

  415. anguish?

  416. Why not

  417. just turn

  418. to blind

  419. eye and

  420. hope for

  421. the best?

  422. Well look

  423. at the rest

  424. of verse 4

  425. it wasn't

  426. to grieve

  427. you

  428. but to

  429. let you

  430. know the

  431. depth of

  432. my love

  433. for you.

  434. My goal

  435. is that

  436. you would

  437. be full

  438. of joy

  439. as you

  440. stand

  441. firm

  442. in

  443. Christ.

  444. If you're

  445. a member

  446. of this

  447. church

  448. or any

  449. church

  450. if you're

  451. visiting

  452. do you

  453. love

  454. the

  455. church?

  456. Do I

  457. love you

  458. enough to

  459. correct

  460. any

  461. spiritual

  462. drift?

  463. Do you

  464. love me

  465. enough

  466. to

  467. rebuke

  468. me

  469. over

  470. some

  471. sinful

  472. behaviour

  473. or

  474. attitude?

  475. You see

  476. such action

  477. isn't

  478. pushy

  479. or superior

  480. or

  481. judgmental

  482. it's an

  483. expression

  484. of our

  485. love.

  486. The easiest

  487. thing would

  488. be to

  489. ignore it

  490. and say

  491. sure it's

  492. just the

  493. way they

  494. are.

  495. That's

  496. unloving.

  497. Loving

  498. correction

  499. comes from

  500. a heart

  501. of deep

  502. concern

  503. for a

  504. brother

  505. or sister

  506. who is

  507. drifting

  508. away.

  509. Our

  510. goal

  511. is that

  512. we would

  513. together

  514. be full

  515. of joy

  516. as we

  517. stand

  518. firm

  519. in

  520. Christ.

  521. With

  522. loving

  523. correction

  524. comes

  525. loving

  526. restoration.

  527. So far

  528. as we've

  529. studied in

  530. this section

  531. we haven't

  532. been told

  533. what the

  534. issue was

  535. that needed

  536. corrected.

  537. But I

  538. think in

  539. verses 5

  540. following

  541. we're given

  542. a clue.

  543. Let's read

  544. verse 5.

  545. He's

  546. talking about

  547. a particular

  548. person.

  549. If

  550. anyone has

  551. caused

  552. grief

  553. through

  554. their

  555. sin

  556. that is

  557. he has

  558. not so

  559. much

  560. grieved

  561. me

  562. as he

  563. has

  564. grieved

  565. all of

  566. you

  567. to some

  568. extent

  569. not to

  570. put it

  571. too

  572. severely.

  573. The

  574. punishment

  575. inflicted

  576. on him

  577. by the

  578. majority

  579. is sufficient.

  580. Now

  581. instead

  582. you ought

  583. to forgive

  584. and comfort

  585. him

  586. so that

  587. he will

  588. not be

  589. overwhelmed

  590. by excessive

  591. sorrow.

  592. It seems

  593. that there

  594. is a

  595. member of

  596. the church

  597. who was

  598. not walking

  599. with Christ

  600. and was

  601. unrepentant.

  602. Despite

  603. being told

  604. nothing seemed

  605. to change.

  606. It could

  607. be

  608. that the

  609. issue being

  610. referred to

  611. is what we

  612. read about

  613. in 1

  614. Corinthians.

  615. So you

  616. can put

  617. a finger

  618. in 2

  619. Corinthians

  620. and go

  621. back to

  622. 1

    1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  623. Corinthians

  624. chapter

  625. 5.

  626. 1

    1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  627. Corinthians

  628. chapter

  629. 5.

  630. It could

  631. be the

  632. issue here

  633. that we're

  634. about to

  635. read.

  636. If it's

  637. not, it's

  638. certainly a

  639. good example

  640. and helps

  641. explain what

  642. might be

  643. going on.

  644. Corinthians

  645. 5

  646. verses

  647. 1

  648. to 2

  649. Paul

  650. says to

  651. the same

  652. church,

  653. it's actually

  654. reported

  655. that there

  656. is sexual

  657. immorality

  658. among you

  659. and of a

  660. kind that

  661. even pagans,

  662. that is

  663. those who

  664. are not

  665. yet Christians,

  666. do not

  667. tolerate.

  668. A man

  669. is sleeping

  670. with his

  671. father's

  672. wife or

  673. a man

  674. is sleeping

  675. with his

  676. mother-in-law.

  677. Verse 2,

  678. 6.

  679. And you

  680. are so proud.

  681. Shouldn't

  682. you have

  683. gone into

  684. mourning and

  685. have put

  686. out of

  687. your

  688. fellowship

  689. the man

  690. who has

  691. been doing

  692. this?

  693. Verse 6,

  694. your

  695. boasting

  696. is not

  697. good.

  698. Don't

  699. you know

  700. that a

  701. little yeast

  702. leavens the

  703. whole batch

  704. of dough?

  705. Just as

  706. yeast

  707. goes and

  708. works in

  709. the whole

  710. loaf of

  711. bread,

  712. so he's

  713. saying

  714. undealt

  715. with

  716. sin

  717. will

  718. affect

  719. the

  720. whole

  721. church

  722. family.

  723. Let's

  724. go back

  725. to

  726. 2 Corinthians.

  727. So the

  728. concern is

  729. that a

  730. member of

  731. the church

  732. has been

  733. having an

  734. affair

  735. and despite

  736. the seriousness

  737. of it,

  738. despite the

  739. warnings and

  740. the

  741. encouragements,

  742. has remained

  743. unrepentant.

  744. And not

  745. only that,

  746. the church

  747. is turning

  748. a blind

  749. eye to

  750. it as

  751. well.

  752. They're

  753. ignoring

  754. it.

  755. The church

  756. has become

  757. desensitized

  758. to the

  759. issue.

  760. So what

  761. harm are

  762. they doing?

  763. It doesn't

  764. matter.

  765. It's just

  766. the way

  767. they are.

  768. Let them

  769. be.

  770. Well,

  771. thankfully,

  772. the church

  773. had listened

  774. to Paul's

  775. correction,

  776. even though

  777. it was

  778. painful

  779. and tearful.

  780. He was

  781. disciplined

  782. by the

  783. church and

  784. treated as

  785. someone,

  786. well,

  787. who was

  788. not yet a

  789. Christian.

  790. They needed

  791. the gospel.

  792. Look at

  793. verse 6.

  794. This is 2

    2 Corinthians 2:6

  795. Corinthians

  796. chapter 2

  797. verse 6.

  798. He says,

  799. the punishment

  800. inflicted on

  801. him by the

  802. majority,

  803. that is,

  804. the members

  805. of the

  806. church,

  807. is

  808. sufficient.

  809. Now,

  810. we must

  811. think about

  812. this and

  813. wonder,

  814. well,

  815. if I

  816. sin,

  817. is that

  818. going to

  819. happen to

  820. me?

  821. Well,

  822. I think

  823. what's being

  824. talked about

  825. here is

  826. something

  827. serious.

  828. It's about

  829. persistent

  830. sin,

  831. rejecting

  832. correction,

  833. and

  834. remaining

  835. unreplaced.

  836. unrepentant,

  837. persisting

  838. in a

  839. particular

  840. behavior or

  841. attitude,

  842. rejecting

  843. correction,

  844. and

  845. remaining

  846. unrepentant.

  847. That is

  848. why the

  849. church had

  850. to act in

  851. such a

  852. way to

  853. say,

  854. you are

  855. no longer

  856. a part of

  857. this

  858. fellowship.

  859. You are

  860. not living

  861. as a

  862. Christian.

  863. Now,

  864. again,

  865. this is

  866. hard for

  867. us maybe

  868. to hear,

  869. but it's

  870. not being

  871. judgmental.

  872. This is

  873. driven by

  874. a heart

  875. of love

  876. and concern

  877. for their

  878. brother and

  879. sister,

  880. in the hope

  881. that they

  882. would turn

  883. back to

  884. Christ.

  885. It's not a

  886. case of the

  887. religious police

  888. coming along

  889. and kicking

  890. people out

  891. left,

  892. right,

  893. and center.

  894. It's about

  895. the restoration

  896. of the

  897. church family.

  898. it's about

  899. that they

  900. may know

  901. a joy-filled

  902. life of

  903. being firm

  904. in Christ.

  905. One author

  906. put it

  907. like this,

  908. a critical

  909. test of

  910. genuine

  911. love is

  912. whether we

  913. are willing

  914. to confront

  915. and discipline

  916. those we

  917. care for.

  918. Nothing is

  919. more difficult

  920. than disciplining

  921. a brother or

  922. sister in

  923. Christ who

  924. is trapped

  925. in sin.

  926. That's why

  927. Paul was

  928. of great

  929. anguish

  930. and great

  931. distress.

  932. Or as

  933. Jesus himself

  934. says to

  935. the church

  936. in Revelation,

  937. those whom

  938. I love

  939. I rebuke

  940. and discipline.

  941. So be

  942. earnest

  943. to repent.

  944. You see,

  945. the purpose

  946. is that they

  947. might be

  948. restored in

  949. their relationship

  950. with Christ,

  951. standing

  952. firm.

  953. The goal

  954. is that

  955. they would

  956. have a

  957. joy-filled

  958. life and

  959. that the

  960. church

  961. together

  962. would be

  963. filled

  964. with joy

  965. as together

  966. they stand

  967. firm in

  968. Christ.

  969. Thankfully,

  970. the correction

  971. had the

  972. desired effect.

  973. Look at

  974. verse 7.

  975. Now

  976. instead,

  977. you ought

  978. to forgive

  979. and comforted

  980. him so

  981. that he

  982. will not

  983. be

  984. overwhelmed

  985. by

  986. excessive

  987. sorrow.

  988. I urge

  989. you

  990. therefore,

  991. reaffirm

  992. your love

  993. for him.

  994. Isn't

  995. it wonderful?

  996. It would

  997. be unloving

  998. to leave the

  999. brother or

  1000. sister who

  1001. had been

  1002. unrepent and

  1003. had now

  1004. turned back

  1005. to the

  1006. Lord

  1007. outside.

  1008. That would

  1009. be

  1010. judgmental.

  1011. Instead,

  1012. they are

  1013. now to

  1014. embrace

  1015. them and

  1016. welcome

  1017. them to

  1018. celebrate

  1019. their return.

  1020. Verse 8,

  1021. I urge you

  1022. therefore,

  1023. reaffirm

  1024. your love

  1025. for him.

  1026. Make it

  1027. your goal

  1028. that they

  1029. have a

  1030. joy-filled

  1031. life.

  1032. They are

  1033. right with

  1034. Christ and

  1035. right with

  1036. each other.

  1037. are you

  1038. a member

  1039. of this

  1040. church?

  1041. Do you

  1042. love the

  1043. church?

  1044. Do you

  1045. love your

  1046. brothers and

  1047. sisters so

  1048. much that

  1049. you will do

  1050. whatever it

  1051. takes to

  1052. restore them

  1053. if they

  1054. have drifted

  1055. from Christ?

  1056. Will I

  1057. forgive them

  1058. just as God

  1059. has forgiven

  1060. them?

  1061. Will I

  1062. comfort them

  1063. and embrace

  1064. them and

  1065. welcome them

  1066. home?

  1067. You see,

  1068. to withhold

  1069. forgiveness is

  1070. a serious

  1071. matter.

  1072. Instead,

  1073. we embrace

  1074. and reaffirm

  1075. our love.

  1076. Loving

  1077. restoration

  1078. comes from

  1079. a heart

  1080. that cares

  1081. deeply for

  1082. the spiritual

  1083. health of

  1084. our brothers

  1085. and sisters.

  1086. Our goal,

  1087. our motto

  1088. is that we

  1089. would have

  1090. a joy-filled

  1091. life as we

  1092. stand firm

  1093. in Christ.

  1094. You see,

  1095. what this

  1096. text is

  1097. really getting

  1098. at

  1099. is that we

  1100. would have

  1101. a Christ-like

  1102. love.

  1103. love.

  1104. The members

  1105. of the church

  1106. are to

  1107. love one

  1108. another just

  1109. as Christ

  1110. loved us.

  1111. And how

  1112. did he love

  1113. us?

  1114. Well,

  1115. God loved

  1116. the world.

  1117. He loved

  1118. his church

  1119. so much

  1120. that he

  1121. gave his

  1122. one and

  1123. only son

  1124. into the

  1125. world for

  1126. us.

  1127. And Christ

  1128. coming into

  1129. the world,

  1130. it was a

  1131. most painful

  1132. visit.

  1133. a life

  1134. filled with

  1135. tears as

  1136. he longed

  1137. for people

  1138. to return

  1139. to him,

  1140. as he

  1141. wept over

  1142. the city.

  1143. He came

  1144. to take

  1145. my sin

  1146. and your

  1147. sin on

  1148. himself.

  1149. On the

  1150. cross,

  1151. Jesus Christ

  1152. was corrected

  1153. for us.

  1154. There he

  1155. faced the

  1156. greatest

  1157. discipline

  1158. as he

  1159. was punished

  1160. by God

  1161. for the

  1162. wrong things

  1163. you and

  1164. I have

  1165. done.

  1166. In love

  1167. he took

  1168. our sin.

  1169. But that

  1170. wasn't the

  1171. end,

  1172. was it?

  1173. Three days

  1174. after his

  1175. death,

  1176. Jesus was

  1177. raised to

  1178. life again.

  1179. He was

  1180. lovingly

  1181. restored,

  1182. crowned

  1183. with honour

  1184. and glory.

  1185. That's the

  1186. love of

  1187. Christ for

  1188. us today.

  1189. Christ was

  1190. corrected so

  1191. that by

  1192. faith in

  1193. him we

  1194. are corrected.

  1195. And just

  1196. as Christ

  1197. has been

  1198. restored,

  1199. so by

  1200. faith in

  1201. him we

  1202. are

  1203. restored.

  1204. What's that

  1205. going to

  1206. look like

  1207. for us

  1208. tomorrow as

  1209. we go to

  1210. our college,

  1211. our school,

  1212. our work,

  1213. at home?

  1214. Well, it

  1215. causes us to

  1216. gaze at

  1217. Christ.

  1218. Because as

  1219. we look to

  1220. the cross,

  1221. we see on

  1222. the one

  1223. hand the

  1224. seriousness of

  1225. our sin,

  1226. but also we

  1227. see the

  1228. greatness of

  1229. God's grace.

  1230. True love

  1231. will both

  1232. correct us

  1233. and restore

  1234. us.

  1235. The love

  1236. of Christ

  1237. leads us

  1238. daily in

  1239. repentance

  1240. before him

  1241. and

  1242. receiving

  1243. his freeing

  1244. forgiveness.

  1245. Not

  1246. least does

  1247. it affect

  1248. our

  1249. relationships

  1250. with each

  1251. other.

  1252. Look at

  1253. verse 10.

  1254. He says,

  1255. anyone you

  1256. forgive,

  1257. I also

  1258. forgive.

  1259. And what I

  1260. have forgiven,

  1261. if there was

  1262. anything to

  1263. forgive,

  1264. I have

  1265. forgiven in

  1266. the sight

  1267. of Christ

  1268. for your

  1269. sake.

  1270. just as

  1271. we have

  1272. been

  1273. forgiven,

  1274. we need

  1275. to forgive

  1276. one another

  1277. and show

  1278. grace to

  1279. one another,

  1280. not to

  1281. do so.

  1282. To

  1283. withhold

  1284. that

  1285. forgiveness

  1286. and grace

  1287. is so,

  1288. so dangerous.

  1289. And here's

  1290. why.

  1291. Look at

  1292. verse 11.

  1293. We

  1294. forgive

  1295. in order

  1296. that Satan

  1297. might not

  1298. outwit us,

  1299. for we

  1300. are not

  1301. unaware of

  1302. his schemes.

  1303. Satan

  1304. would love

  1305. nothing more

  1306. than for us

  1307. to turn a

  1308. blind eye

  1309. to each

  1310. other and

  1311. say it

  1312. doesn't

  1313. matter.

  1314. But not

  1315. to repent

  1316. will mean

  1317. sin is

  1318. ignored and

  1319. that will

  1320. lead to

  1321. greater

  1322. hardness

  1323. of heart.

  1324. And not

  1325. to forgive

  1326. will mean

  1327. grace is

  1328. withheld

  1329. and will

  1330. result in

  1331. deeper

  1332. bitterness

  1333. amongst

  1334. one another.

  1335. So

  1336. together

  1337. we fix

  1338. our eyes

  1339. on Christ.

  1340. We

  1341. remember

  1342. his great

  1343. embracing

  1344. love for

  1345. us and

  1346. we love

  1347. each other.

  1348. Our goal

  1349. is that we

  1350. would have

  1351. a joy

  1352. filled

  1353. life as

  1354. together

  1355. we encourage

  1356. and support

  1357. one another

  1358. to stand

  1359. firm

  1360. in Christ.

  1361. So let

  1362. me ask

  1363. us all

  1364. do you

  1365. love the

  1366. church?

  1367. Do you

  1368. love one

  1369. another?

  1370. Do you

  1371. love and

  1372. care for

  1373. your brother

  1374. and sister

  1375. so much

  1376. that you

  1377. will do

  1378. all that

  1379. it takes

  1380. to ensure

  1381. they are

  1382. standing firm

  1383. in Christ?

  1384. Let's

  1385. pray.

  1386. pray.

  1387. Father,

  1388. your word is

  1389. good.

  1390. yes it

  1391. is difficult

  1392. sometimes

  1393. it's hard

  1394. to take

  1395. in

  1396. but it

  1397. is good

  1398. it is

  1399. wonderfully

  1400. good.

  1401. Would you

  1402. please help

  1403. us

  1404. that we

  1405. may increase

  1406. our love

  1407. for one

  1408. another

  1409. just as

  1410. you loved

  1411. us

  1412. that there

  1413. would be

  1414. no bounds

  1415. to the

  1416. extent

  1417. of our

  1418. love

  1419. to support

  1420. build up

  1421. and encourage

  1422. correct

  1423. and restore

  1424. that we

  1425. would do

  1426. all that

  1427. we possibly

  1428. can

  1429. to walk

  1430. beside our

  1431. brothers and

  1432. sisters

  1433. that we

  1434. would stand

  1435. firm in

  1436. Christ

  1437. filled

  1438. with confidence

  1439. assurance

  1440. and rejoicing

  1441. together

  1442. as we

  1443. stand before

  1444. Christ on

  1445. the last

  1446. day.

  1447. What joy

  1448. that we

  1449. would be

  1450. there

  1451. together

  1452. because

  1453. you

  1454. helped

  1455. me

  1456. and I

  1457. helped

  1458. you.

  1459. Thank you

  1460. for your

  1461. church.

  1462. Thank you

  1463. for your

  1464. people.

  1465. Amen.

  1466. We're

  1467. going to

  1468. sing

  1469. together.

  1470. There is

  1471. an everlasting

  1472. kindness you

  1473. lavished on

  1474. us.

  1475. With the

  1476. radiance of

  1477. heaven you

  1478. came to

  1479. rescue the

  1480. lost.

  1481. Here is the

  1482. love of

  1483. God.

  1484. Let's

  1485. stand

  1486. together,

  1487. worship and

  1488. praise him

  1489. and give

  1490. thanks for

  1491. his love.

  1492. happy

  1493. !

  1494. happy

  1495. Thank you.

  1496. Thank you.

  1497. Thank you.

  1498. Thank you.

  1499. Thank you.

  1500. Thank you.

  1501. Thank you.

  1502. Thank you.

  1503. Thank you.

  1504. Amen.

  1505. Amen.

  1506. Please take your seats.

1507. We continue in our worship as we remember our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

1508. The Lord's Supper, or Communion, well it's a family gathering, isn't it?

1509. It's a family meal where we remember God's love to us and our love for one another.

1510. A meal where we are reminded of God's commitment to us and our commitment to each other.

  1511. Together, we remember Jesus.

1512. We look at the cross afresh and we remind ourselves that he was corrected for us.

  1513. Disciplined for us.

1514. Punished, shut out from the Father for you and I.

1515. So that we could be restored.

1516. So that we could be forgiven.

1517. So that we could be comforted afresh in the love of God.

1518. As we eat and as we drink, we are reaffirmed of God's love for us.

1519. And we reaffirm our love for one another.

1520. Who can share in this meal, simple as it is, of bread and juice?

1521. The bread speaking of Christ's body.

1522. The juice speaking of the blood shed on the cross for our sins.

1523. Who gets to eat and drink?

  1524. It's for the repentant.

  1525. Not the unrepentant.

1526. It's for those who know their need of Jesus.

1527. To see the seriousness of sin and the greatness of God's grace.

1528. If you have your Bibles, please turn to 1 Corinthians chapter 11.

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

1529. Before we eat the bread and drink the juice,

1530. we're going to remind us of the words Paul spoke to the church,

1531. which are written and recorded for us today,

  1532. as we remember Jesus.

  1533. 1 Corinthians chapter 11, verse 23.

    1 Corinthians 11:23

1534. Remember this is written to people just like us,

  1535. messy and broken,

1536. hidden sins and public ones.

1537. We come afresh that we might know God's grace

  1538. and know his love.

  1539. Verse 23.

1540. For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you.

1541. The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed,

  1542. took bread,

1543. and when he had given thanks,

1544. he broke it and said,

  1545. this is my body,

  1546. which is for you.

1547. Do this in remembrance of me.

  1548. In the same way,

  1549. after supper,

1550. he took the cup saying,

1551. this cup is the new covenant in my blood.

1552. Do this whenever you drink it,

  1553. in remembrance of me.

1554. for when you eat this bread

  1555. and drink this cup,

1556. you proclaim the Lord's death

  1557. until he comes.

1558. So if you are trusting in Christ today,

1559. if you come with your repentance,

  1560. needing grace afresh,

  1561. reminded of his love,

  1562. then come and share

  1563. in this meal together.

  1564. Let's pray.

  1565. Lord Jesus,

1566. we thank you so much

1567. for your death on the cross

  1568. on our behalf.

1569. Thank you that you were disciplined for us.

  1570. that through faith,

  1571. we might be restored

1572. in right relationship with you,

1573. never to face condemnation again,

  1574. forgiven,

  1575. freed,

  1576. comforted,

  1577. and loved.

  1578. thank you,

  1579. thank you,

  1580. thank you,

  1581. thank you,

  1582. for dying for us.

1583. Thank you for your commitment

1584. that nothing in all this world,

  1585. not even our sin,

  1586. can ever separate us

  1587. from your love.

1588. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1589. Amen.

  1590. It's our practice as a church

  1591. to receive the bread,

  1592. hold on to it,

1593. and then as a family,

  1594. we will eat together

  1595. as brothers and sisters.

  1596. Please take a piece

1597. and then we will wait

  1598. until we're all served.

  1599. Please use this time

  1600. in the quietness

1601. to bring your own confession

  1602. to the Lord.

  1603. And there's no idea

  1604. of holy holy

  1605. Thank you.

  1606. Thank you.

  1607. Thank you.

  1608. Thank you.

1609. We remember God's love to us, shown to us through his Son, Jesus Christ.

1610. And we remember our love for one another.

1611. As a family, let us eat together in thanksgiving.

1612. And as we drink as you receive.

1613. Nick and Tricia are going to serve the juice

1614. and as we do, please drink as you receive

1615. and as it's being passed around,

1616. let us celebrate God's forgiveness of us

1617. the comfort that we have in his love

1618. and our commitment to love one another.

  1619. Amen.

1620. As you are served or wait to be served,

1621. I encourage you just in the quietness of your heart

1622. to pray for the person beside you or in front of you.

1623. Pray that they would know God's love afresh

1624. and that God would strengthen the bonds

1625. of our love for one another.

  1626. Amen.

  1627. Amen.

  1628. Amen.

  1629. Amen.

  1630. Thank you.

  1631. Thank you.

  1632. Thank you.

  1633. Thank you.

1634. Please feel free to talk to me afterwards or give me a ring.

  1635. Two things.

1636. We're going to have tea and coffee, so invite everybody to stay and chat and catch up.

1637. It would be great to talk with you further.

1638. And there's a big, big card on the table as you came in for Amy, Amy Patterson, who's serving in Sheffield.

1639. Nick and Trish are going to be heading there next weekend to say hi and encourage and support her.

1640. So if you'd like to write a message, it's a nice big one so you can do all kinds of pictures and squiggles and all sorts of things.

1641. Something that Amy would appreciate.

1642. So please do that on your way out.

  1643. Let's pray.

1644. Father, may we know the blessing of your grace and your peace upon each one of us this coming week.

1645. Thank you for your love.

1646. Thank you for your love.

  1647. In Jesus' name.

  1648. Amen.

  1649. Amen.

  1650. Thank you.

  1651. Thank you.

  1652. Thank you.

  1653. Thank you.

  1654. Thank you.

  1655. Thank you.
