  1. Before Ralph comes up to preach, you can see the references there on the screen.

  2. ! So we're going to begin with Matthew chapter 28 and verse 16.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  3. ! And that's on page 1000 of the Church Bible.

  4. Matthew chapter 28 and verse 16.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  5. And we're going to read from verse 16 to 20.

  6. And verse 13.

  7. And verse 13.

  8. Good morning, everyone. It's good to see you.

  9. And so on and so on and so on.

  10. And so as we're looking over the next three weeks to answer this question of what is the church, we can think of it organically or institutionally.

  11. So we can look at the flesh or we can look at the bones of the church.

  12. And people these days, they love talking organically, don't they?

  13. You know, flesh is soft and it's yielding and it's pretty.

  14. But the thing is, flesh without bones isn't very pleasant to look at at all.

  15. Okay. So this morning, we're going to start looking at the institutional bones of the church to give us some shape over the next few weeks.

  16. But if you're more eager to hear about the organic images of the church, the church's body, the church's family, that's coming.

  17. Okay. So I'm saying we're going to work through this.

  18. There's a lot to the church.

  19. But we're going to open the ears, the eyes of our hearts to see through the word what Jesus has to say about his kingdom and the church.

  20. And this morning, we're going to be looking at the gospel of Matthew.

  21. So let's just pray as we open up the word again and hear what God has to say.

  22. Our Father, you love us immensely and you have given us all that we need for life and godliness.

  23. And I thank you, Father, that you have given us one another.

  24. We cannot and should not live the Christian life alone, but we should do it together as your gathering, as your church, as your people.

  25. So help us now this morning to hear from you and to be a blessing one to another.

  26. Amen.

  27. So please do keep your Bibles open.

  28. We'll be looking at each of those sections together.

  29. Let me start with a question.

  30. It's always a good way to start a sermon.

  31. Who would you put in charge of the church?

  32. Well, Jesus, of course.

  33. Thank you for listening to today's sermon.

  34. I'll dismiss you all early.

  35. It's the obvious answer, isn't it?

  36. But when we ask a slightly different version of that question, because all Christians would agree that Jesus is the head of the church.

  37. If we ask the question, who on earth should be in charge of the church?

  38. Christians begin to come up with quite different answers.

  39. All Christians say that Jesus is the head of the church and he is in charge.

  40. But when asked about who on earth Jesus has given authority to, you get these different ideas.

  41. For the Roman Catholic Church, it's ultimately the Pope who is in charge and he holds the church together.

  42. For Anglicanism or the Church of Ireland, it's the bishops connected together that hold the church.

  43. Presbyterians, well, they rule the church by bringing elders from different churches together to meet and make decisions.

  44. And many independent evangelical and Pentecostal churches, well, they go for the one man rule or the group of elders as the rulers of their individual church.

  45. That brings us to this church, which is a Baptist church.

  46. Now you have Baptist and congregational churches where the church is ruled by ordinary members and led by elders.

  47. Who on earth is in charge of the church creates no little controversy and discussion.

  48. But this morning I want to show from the scriptures as we look at the Bible that it is the ordinary members of a local church that Jesus puts in charge.

  49. Ordinary members, extraordinarily gifted by the Spirit for that task.

  50. So let's look again at Matthew chapter 28 and verses 16 to 20.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  51. Well-known words.

  52. These are the parting words of King Jesus to the apostles.

  53. The marching orders.

  54. Verse 18.

  55. Look at verse 18.

  56. All authority in heaven and on earth belongs to Jesus.

  57. He is the King of kings.

  58. Jesus is the ruler over heaven and earth.

  59. And he commands his apostles to go and make disciples of all nations.

  60. Baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything that he has commanded.

  61. And surely he will be with them always to the very end of the age.

  62. This is the great commission of King Jesus.

  63. Jesus gives the church his name.

  64. Jesus gives the church his mission.

  65. And that is to share the gospel.

  66. Go and spread the good news.

  67. Baptize Christians into the faith.

  68. But Jesus left.

  69. Actually, soon after he said these words at the end of Matthew.

  70. You've probably noticed Jesus isn't here with us this morning face to face.

  71. He's not physically here in Carragoline Baptist Church on a Sunday morning.

  72. So Jesus must give some means for his church to keep being the church in the world and through the centuries.

  73. Because it's been 2,000 years.

  74. So how does the church keep being the church through all the world, through all this time?

  75. We're going to do a lot of flicking.

  76. We're going to go back to Matthew chapter 16.

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  77. So let's go and look at Matthew 16, chapter 16, page 983, if you're using the church Bible.

  78. And from verse 13.

  79. I'm going to jump down to verse 15, right in the middle there.

  80. Jesus asks his 12 disciples,

  81. Who do you say I am?

  82. And Peter, who's often a spokesperson,

  83. on behalf of the disciples,

  84. on behalf of the 12,

  85. he says,

  86. You are the Christ.

  87. Or you are the Messiah.

  88. That is the King.

  89. The Son of the Living God.

  90. Verse 16.

  91. And in verse 17,

  92. Jesus basically says,

  93. Peter, you're right.

  94. That's exactly who I am.

  95. The Messiah.

  96. The King.

  97. The Son of the Living God.

  98. And look at verse 18.

  99. And Jesus then tells Peter

  100. that Jesus will build his church on him

  101. and his confession.

  102. That's a church that's going to knock down the gates of hell,

  103. the gates of Hades,

  104. as it moves forward.

  105. Jesus is going to build his church

  106. on Peter and his confession.

  107. We spoke about the different views

  108. that churches take

  109. on the idea of who rules the church on earth.

  110. And these verses have created

  111. no little debate

  112. or controversy about these verses.

  113. And they're often made to use,

  114. they're often used to make the case

  115. for the idea of having a pope

  116. or for having a succession of bishops

  117. to rule the church.

  118. But this morning,

  119. I want to focus on two things

  120. from these verses

  121. that are in focus for building the church.

  122. Two things I think are clear.

  123. And those two things

  124. are a right confession

  125. and a right confessor.

  126. A right confession

  127. and a right confessor.

  128. We can say

  129. that the church is built

  130. on the confession,

  131. the speaking, clearly,

  132. of the right gospel

  133. by people who love Jesus,

  134. the right confessors.

  135. Let me say that again.

  136. We can say that the church

  137. is built on the confession

  138. of the right gospel

  139. by people who love Jesus.

  140. And Peter confesses

  141. that Jesus is king.

  142. Jesus is Messiah.

  143. Back in verse 16.

  144. That is a true confession.

  145. Jesus is God's promised king.

  146. He is God, the son, eternal.

  147. So when Jesus talks about the church

  148. in verse 18,

  149. he said it is defined

  150. by the rock of this true confession,

  151. the rock of the gospel.

  152. What we say about Jesus matters.

  153. It must be true.

  154. It must be the gospel.

  155. That is the rock and foundation

  156. of the church.

  157. And the church is also defined

  158. by the rock of a true confessor.

  159. Peter knows and loves Jesus.

  160. Jesus, in verse 17,

  161. says that he is blessed,

  162. a sign of his relationship to Jesus.

  163. Peter is a Christian.

  164. He is a follower called by Jesus

  165. to carry Jesus' name,

  166. to represent Jesus.

  167. Jesus.

  168. And Peter truly believes

  169. and truly lives

  170. by his confession of Jesus,

  171. even as he fails

  172. and sins many times.

  173. He is still a true confessor.

  174. And so we come to verse 19.

  175. I will give you the keys

  176. of the kingdom of heaven.

  177. Jesus is the one who holds the keys.

  178. He is the I here.

  179. And he holds the keys

  180. to the kingdom of heaven.

  181. Because as we saw

  182. at the end of Matthew,

  183. all authority in heaven and earth

  184. is given to Jesus.

  185. He is the king.

  186. And he can decide,

  187. because he's the king,

  188. in his absence,

  189. who gets to hold the keys.

  190. Who has the keys of the kingdom?

  191. Jesus gets to decide

  192. who's in charge of the church.

  193. It's Jesus who decides,

  194. not us.

  195. We need to listen to Jesus.

  196. The idea of holding

  197. and using keys,

  198. it's not a complicated idea.

  199. But let's think about it a little.

  200. You see,

  201. I'm a kingdom owner.

  202. Don't know if you realize that.

  203. Admittedly,

  204. it's a really small kingdom

  205. and one that the bank

  206. currently has an interest in.

  207. But 14 Heatherfields

  208. is, in a sense,

  209. our little kingdom.

  210. And I have to say our kingdom

  211. because Cherry, of course,

  212. is co-regent of our house and home.

  213. It's king and queen,

  214. Ralph and Cherry,

  215. 14 Heatherfields.

  216. Now, the first house that we ruled

  217. was actually 20 Drum and Ore

  218. on the upper Kilmoney Road,

  219. which is the other side of the town

  220. from where we live now.

  221. And it's the time, kids,

  222. remember when we had the yellow car?

  223. Yeah, the yellow car time

  224. when we were living over on 20 Drum and Ore.

  225. And back in 2009,

  226. we had to go away for five months.

  227. But we wanted our kingdom,

  228. our little house,

  229. looked after.

  230. So,

  231. in our infinite wisdom,

  232. we left in the hands

  233. of two college students.

  234. And we entrusted

  235. literal keys

  236. for the house

  237. to these two young lads.

  238. And guess what?

  239. They got to decide

  240. on our behalf

  241. who got in,

  242. who enjoyed the pleasures

  243. and the protections

  244. of the kingdom,

  245. who got the fridge,

  246. who got the Wi-Fi,

  247. who got the beds,

  248. and who, in turn,

  249. was kept out.

  250. We left some instructions,

  251. we checked in with them

  252. a few times,

  253. but you know what?

  254. They had the keys.

  255. We did stop short

  256. of making them

  257. taking a loyalty oath

  258. to us as king and queen.

  259. But for those five months,

  260. those two students

  261. had the authority

  262. to represent us

  263. at 20 Drum and Ore

  264. on the upper Kilmoney Road.

  265. Back to verse 19.

  266. Jesus leaves

  267. a set of keys

  268. with Peter,

  269. the representative

  270. of the disciples.

  271. It's a singular you.

  272. I will,

  273. Jesus,

  274. I will give you,

  275. that's Peter,

  276. the keys.

  277. And then Jesus says,

  278. whatever you bind

  279. on earth

  280. is already bound

  281. in heaven,

  282. and whatever you

  283. loose on earth

  284. is already

  285. loosed in heaven.

  286. So having the keys

  287. of the kingdom

  288. on earth

  289. authorizes

  290. the holder

  291. to pronounce

  292. a judgment

  293. on heaven's behalf.

  294. There's a connection

  295. between what is said

  296. on earth

  297. is reflected

  298. in heaven

  299. or

  300. the other way,

  301. what heaven's view

  302. is actually

  303. reflected on earth

  304. because Jesus

  305. is in charge.

  306. You can say

  307. the what

  308. or who

  309. is in or out

  310. here on earth.

  311. The what

  312. or who

  313. of the gospel

  314. is in or out

  315. on those two

  316. based on

  317. the heavenly

  318. verdict.

  319. Whatever is bound

  320. and loosed

  321. on our pronouncements

  322. is a reflection

  323. of what heaven

  324. would say.

  325. So what does

  326. that mean?

  327. If somebody

  328. says something

  329. or a church

  330. says something,

  331. we have to ask,

  332. is this a true

  333. confession

  334. of the gospel?

  335. Are these gospel

  336. words?

  337. Are they in keeping

  338. with what Jesus

  339. has said?

  340. We have to

  341. ask,

  342. is this person

  343. a true

  344. confessor?

  345. Are they living

  346. in a way

  347. that rightly

  348. represents

  349. Jesus?

  350. These are the

  351. kinds of

  352. questions

  353. for whoever

  354. holds the keys,

  355. for whoever

  356. is in charge.

  357. and I

  358. realize

  359. my slides,

  360. yeah,

  361. sorry,

  362. let me keep

  363. trying.

  364. We need to

  365. move very

  366. slowly

  367. here.

  368. Jesus

  369. has

  370. ultimate

  371. authority

  372. and then

  373. gives

  374. exercise

  375. of some

  376. of that

  377. authority

  378. on earth

  379. to those

  380. that hold

  381. the keys.

  382. And I just

  383. want to be

  384. super clear

  385. on this

  386. this morning.

  387. holding

  388. and using

  389. the keys

  390. does not

  391. give the

  392. holder

  393. of the keys

  394. the power

  395. to define

  396. the gospel

  397. or to make

  398. someone a

  399. Christian

  400. or not.

  401. That is really

  402. important to

  403. understand.

  404. Holding the

  405. keys does not

  406. give us

  407. authority over

  408. the gospel

  409. or over

  410. people's

  411. eternal

  412. state

  413. or souls.

  414. Our

  415. citizenship

  416. in the

  417. kingdom

  418. of God

  419. is not

  420. given

  421. or taken

  422. by any

  423. earthly

  424. power

  425. or any

  426. earthly

  427. exercise

  428. of the

  429. keys.

  430. We are

  431. not

  432. physically

  433. born into

  434. the kingdom

  435. of God.

  436. We are

  437. not baptized

  438. as babies

  439. into the

  440. kingdom

  441. of God.

  442. We do not

  443. purchase it

  444. for one

  445. million dollars

  446. as a

  447. golden

  448. visa.

  449. It is a

  450. spiritual

  451. citizenship

  452. that God

  453. gifts to

  454. each one

  455. of us

  456. through

  457. faith

  458. and grace

  459. alone.

  460. One

  461. by one

  462. people are

  463. born again

  464. by the

  465. spirit

  466. into his

  467. kingdom.

  468. The good

  469. news of

  470. Jesus,

  471. that news,

  472. that gospel,

  473. that comes

  474. from Jesus.

  475. And the

  476. ultimate

  477. declaration

  478. of who is

  479. in the

  480. kingdom

  481. comes from

  482. King Jesus

  483. on judgment

  484. day.

  485. The scriptures

  486. tell us,

  487. and they're on

  488. the slide

  489. up above,

  490. so you don't

  491. necessarily need to

  492. turn to it

  493. in your

  494. Bibles.

  495. 2 Timothy

  496. 2.19

  497. says this,

  498. Nevertheless,

  499. God's

  500. solid

  501. foundation

  502. stands

  503. firm.

  504. Sealed

  505. with this

  506. inscription,

  507. the Lord

  508. knows

  509. those who

  510. are his.

  511. And Romans

    Romans 14 chapter mention

  512. chapter 14

  513. and verse 4

  514. says,

  515. Who are you

  516. to judge

  517. someone else's

  518. servant?

  519. To their

  520. own

  521. master,

  522. servants

  523. stand or

  524. fall?

  525. And they

  526. will stand,

  527. for the

  528. Lord is

  529. able to

  530. make them

  531. stand.

  532. So no

  533. man or

  534. woman or

  535. pope or

  536. pastor or

  537. synod or

  538. local church

  539. can pass

  540. ultimate

  541. judgment on

  542. the state

  543. of someone's

  544. soul.

  545. But using

  546. the keys,

  547. it's similar

  548. to how a

  549. judge makes

  550. a ruling.

  551. If you think

  552. about a judge,

  553. the judge

  554. doesn't write

  555. the law,

  556. we don't

  557. create the

  558. gospel,

  559. and a judge

  560. does not

  561. actually make

  562. someone innocent

  563. or guilty.

  564. That's a

  565. reality apart

  566. from the

  567. verdict.

  568. A judge

  569. simply declares

  570. a verdict.

  571. And the

  572. true and

  573. final verdict

  574. always rests

  575. in the

  576. hands of

  577. Jesus.

  578. Will not

  579. the judge

  580. of all

  581. the earth

  582. do right?

  583. But someone

  584. must be

  585. in charge

  586. of the

  587. church on

  588. earth

  589. and have

  590. authority

  591. from

  592. Jesus

  593. to render

  594. a verdict

  595. on the

  596. gospel,

  597. the confession,

  598. and who

  599. is a true

  600. confessor.

  601. Because this

  602. is a kingdom,

  603. if we think

  604. about it,

  605. this is a

  606. kingdom whose

  607. citizens

  608. are spread

  609. out through

  610. all the

  611. other kingdoms

  612. of the world.

  613. Didn't we get

  614. the marching

  615. orders,

  616. the end of

  617. Matthew,

  618. going to

  619. all the

  620. world?

  621. It wasn't

  622. a kingdom

  623. that would

  624. sustain

  625. Jerusalem

  626. in the

  627. temple

  628. courts

  629. defined

  630. by nice

  631. neat

  632. boundary

  633. walls.

  634. Jesus'

  635. kingdom on

  636. earth has

  637. no

  638. physical

  639. boundary,

  640. no border.

  641. Christians

  642. go everywhere

  643. with the

  644. gospel.

  645. And they

  646. make other

  647. Christians

  648. through the

  649. power of

  650. the Holy

  651. Spirit.

  652. Jesus

  653. brings them

  654. to faith

  655. and they're

  656. brought into

  657. the church.

  658. But a

  659. kingdom with

  660. no border

  661. has a

  662. problem.

  663. Anyone

  664. can claim

  665. to be a

  666. citizen.

  667. And anyone

  668. can claim

  669. that this

  670. is the

  671. true gospel.

  672. Imposters,

  673. false

  674. teachers,

  675. they can

  676. all say

  677. thus says

  678. the Lord

  679. and claim

  680. I'm a

  681. true follower

  682. and so

  683. the right

  684. use of

  685. the keys

  686. is how

  687. the world

  688. knows

  689. ultimately

  690. who

  691. represents

  692. Jesus.

  693. So we're

  694. going to

  695. turn now

  696. to

  697. Matthew

  698. 18,

  699. a couple

  700. of pages

  701. on.

  702. This is

  703. the second

  704. place,

  705. Matthew

  706. 18 and

  707. verse 15

  708. where Jesus

  709. mentions his

  710. church and

  711. the use

  712. of the

  713. keys.

  714. Matthew

  715. 18 is

  716. where Jesus

  717. shows who

  718. holds the

  719. keys and

  720. uses the

  721. keys of

  722. the kingdom

  723. of heaven.

  724. The who

  725. gives a

  726. verdict so

  727. that the

  728. world knows

  729. who represents

  730. Jesus.

  731. Verse 15,

  732. it starts

  733. with a sin

  734. issue.

  735. A brother

  736. that is a

  737. Christian in a

  738. church family

  739. has sinned

  740. against someone.

  741. It is a sin

  742. that is open

  743. in some way

  744. because in

  745. verse 16

  746. witnesses can

  747. be brought

  748. if needed.

  749. So it's an

  750. open sin.

  751. It's a sin

  752. that is

  753. persistent

  754. and it's

  755. unrepented

  756. because the

  757. brother chooses

  758. not to

  759. listen to

  760. his brothers

  761. and sisters

  762. within the

  763. church family.

  764. It is a

  765. sin that is

  766. serious

  767. as it

  768. brings into

  769. question the

  770. person's

  771. claim of

  772. being a

  773. Christian.

  774. So it's

  775. public,

  776. it's

  777. persistent,

  778. it's

  779. serious.

  780. Let's look

  781. at verses

  782. 17 to

  783. 18.

  784. If they

  785. still refuse

  786. to listen,

  787. tell it to

  788. the church.

  789. And if they

  790. refuse to

  791. listen even

  792. to the

  793. church,

  794. treat them

  795. as you

  796. would a

  797. pagan or

  798. a tax

  799. collector.

  800. Truly I

  801. tell you,

  802. whatever you

  803. bind on

  804. earth will

  805. be bound

  806. in heaven

  807. and whatever

  808. you loose

  809. on earth

  810. will be

  811. loosed

  812. in heaven.

  813. What's the

  814. final court

  815. of appeal

  816. on earth?

  817. Who has

  818. authority to

  819. pass such

  820. a judgment?

  821. Well it

  822. finally rests

  823. with the

  824. church.

  825. Who's the

  826. church?

  827. Well I think

  828. from here it's

  829. clear that it's

  830. people who can

  831. gather in

  832. person,

  833. who knows

  834. the brother

  835. or sister

  836. and can

  837. pass a

  838. verdict as

  839. needed.

  840. And in

  841. this case

  842. the church

  843. passes a

  844. verdict that

  845. says we

  846. can no

  847. longer

  848. affirm your

  849. claim to

  850. be a

  851. Christian.

  852. That's what

  853. it means to

  854. treat someone

  855. as a pagan.

  856. There's someone

  857. of another

  858. religion or

  859. a tax

  860. collector,

  861. someone who

  862. the world

  863. would classify

  864. as a sinner

  865. even.

  866. We can

  867. no longer

  868. validate your

  869. claim to

  870. be a

  871. Christian.

  872. We can

  873. no longer

  874. affirm that

  875. because of

  876. how you

  877. are living

  878. in unrepentant,

  879. persistent,

  880. public and

  881. serious sin.

  882. Jesus says

  883. here that

  884. the binding

  885. and loosing

  886. on earth,

  887. verse 18,

  888. the use of

  889. the keys,

  890. is entrusted

  891. to members

  892. of a

  893. church,

  894. those that

  895. can gather

  896. together and

  897. pass a

  898. verdict.

  899. We know

  900. from here

  901. and elsewhere

  902. in the New

  903. Testament that

  904. is ordinary

  905. members of

  906. the family,

  907. ordinary church

  908. members that

  909. are involved

  910. in the use

  911. of these

  912. keys,

  913. local church

  914. members

  915. exercising

  916. the authority

  917. of Jesus

  918. in matters

  919. of belief

  920. and practice.

  921. Jesus says

  922. bring it to

  923. the church.

  924. Bring such

  925. matters of

  926. persistent,

  927. public and

  928. serious sin

  929. to the

  930. family if

  931. needed.

  932. Bring it to

  933. the church.

  934. Why?

  935. For the

  936. sake of

  937. the gospel.

  938. For the

  939. sake of

  940. the glorious

  941. name of

  942. Jesus

  943. Christ.

  944. Jesus

  945. tells us

  946. that we

  947. have his

  948. spirit among

  949. us as

  950. the church

  951. and we

  952. hold the

  953. keys of

  954. the kingdom.

  955. The you

  956. in verse

  957. 18 is

  958. now a

  959. plural

  960. you.

  961. Chapter

  962. 16 it

  963. was a

  964. singular

  965. you.

  966. Chapter

  967. 18 it's

  968. now a

  969. plural

  970. you.

  971. And I

  972. think verses

  973. 19 and

  974. 20 make

  975. this even

  976. clearer of

  977. who is

  978. exercising

  979. the keys.

  980. Again

  981. truly I

  982. tell you

  983. if two

  984. of you

  985. on earth

  986. agree about

  987. anything they

  988. ask for

  989. it will be

  990. done for

  991. them by

  992. my father

  993. in heaven

  994. for where

  995. two or

  996. three gather

  997. in my

  998. name there

  999. I am

  1000. with them.

  1001. It's where

  1002. two or

  1003. three or

  1004. more are

  1005. gathered.

  1006. Jesus is

  1007. among them

  1008. by his

  1009. spirit as

  1010. they use

  1011. the keys

  1012. to give

  1013. a verdict.

  1014. A

  1015. gathered

  1016. church in

  1017. Jesus'

  1018. name can

  1019. use the

  1020. keys of

  1021. the kingdom

  1022. of heaven.

  1023. This is

  1024. profound

  1025. deeply

  1026. profound.

  1027. These are

  1028. weighty

  1029. matters as

  1030. we think

  1031. of the

  1032. skeleton

  1033. the

  1034. institutional

  1035. skeleton

  1036. of the

  1037. church.

  1038. And it's

  1039. profound

  1040. because

  1041. what

  1042. qualifies

  1043. you

  1044. or what

  1045. qualifies

  1046. me as

  1047. ordinary

  1048. members

  1049. to rule

  1050. Christ's

  1051. church.

  1052. Nothing.

  1053. Nothing

  1054. except the

  1055. truth that

  1056. Jesus has

  1057. called you,

  1058. that Jesus

  1059. has saved

  1060. you,

  1061. that Jesus

  1062. has made

  1063. you a

  1064. new creation

  1065. in him.

  1066. We are

  1067. qualified

  1068. simply by

  1069. being born

  1070. again and

  1071. by being

  1072. given his

  1073. spirit within

  1074. us, the

  1075. spirit among

  1076. the church.

  1077. Each one

  1078. of us who

  1079. are members

  1080. of the

  1081. church knows

  1082. the Lord

  1083. directly.

  1084. The spirit

  1085. is given to

  1086. the whole

  1087. church, all

  1088. its members,

  1089. not just its

  1090. leaders.

  1091. It's not

  1092. like old

  1093. Israel where

  1094. you were

  1095. physically born

  1096. into it,

  1097. whether you

  1098. believed or

  1099. not, and

  1100. had that

  1101. mixed

  1102. community.

  1103. The new

  1104. covenant

  1105. community, the

  1106. church is a

  1107. community filled

  1108. with people

  1109. who know

  1110. the Lord

  1111. and have

  1112. the spirit.

  1113. That's why

  1114. it's so

  1115. important as

  1116. we bring

  1117. people into

  1118. the church

  1119. that they

  1120. confess Jesus

  1121. and that they

  1122. love Jesus.

  1123. And that's not

  1124. a super high

  1125. barrier by the

  1126. way, that's

  1127. who Jesus

  1128. accepts, who

  1129. Jesus has

  1130. called, and

  1131. everyone that

  1132. Jesus accepts,

  1133. the church

  1134. accepts.

  1135. We are

  1136. all the

  1137. prophets and

  1138. the priests

  1139. and the

  1140. kings in

  1141. Christ.

  1142. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  1143. chapter 6,

  1144. I mean, people

  1145. say, well, I

  1146. don't read about

  1147. membership in

  1148. the Bible.

  1149. Where do you

  1150. see the word

  1151. membership?

  1152. And that's a

  1153. good argument.

  1154. Don't see it.

  1155. But yet every

  1156. single page, I

  1157. would argue, of

  1158. the New

  1159. Testament requires

  1160. it and supports

  1161. it and points

  1162. to it.

  1163. Because the

  1164. one anothering

  1165. that we see

  1166. in the

  1167. scriptures is

  1168. simply not

  1169. possible without

  1170. people in

  1171. this community,

  1172. this covenanting

  1173. together, this

  1174. care and

  1175. support.

  1176. Here's an

  1177. encouragement

  1178. that Paul gives

  1179. the church in

  1180. Corinth who

  1181. weren't sure

  1182. whether they

  1183. could weigh in

  1184. on matters.

  1185. Do you not

  1186. know that the

  1187. Lord's people

  1188. will judge the

  1189. world?

  1190. And if you

  1191. are to judge

  1192. the world, are

  1193. you not

  1194. competent to

  1195. judge trivial

  1196. cases here on

  1197. earth now?

  1198. Do you not

  1199. know that we

  1200. will judge

  1201. angels?

  1202. How much

  1203. more the

  1204. things of

  1205. this life?

  1206. It's the

  1207. confidence that

  1208. Christ has put

  1209. in his people

  1210. through his

  1211. spirit to be

  1212. able to keep

  1213. his gospel and

  1214. to keep one

  1215. another in the

  1216. faith.

  1217. What does

  1218. this look like?

  1219. So let's get

  1220. practical.

  1221. We've read a

  1222. lot of

  1223. scripture.

  1224. Maybe it's

  1225. kicked off a

  1226. few questions.

  1227. Maybe you're

  1228. thinking of

  1229. different things

  1230. about the

  1231. church or

  1232. churches you've

  1233. been in.

  1234. So let me

  1235. talk a little

  1236. bit about what

  1237. this looks like

  1238. in practice in

  1239. a church like

  1240. ours.

  1241. In

  1242. Karageline

  1243. Baptist Church,

  1244. we affirm the

  1245. gospel and we

  1246. help one another

  1247. to stay true to

  1248. the Lord.

  1249. it's not that

  1250. complicated in

  1251. some ways.

  1252. We affirm the

  1253. gospel and we

  1254. help one another

  1255. to stay true to

  1256. the Lord as we

  1257. exercise the keys

  1258. of the kingdom

  1259. of heaven.

  1260. And the Bible

  1261. gives us lots

  1262. of images of

  1263. how the church

  1264. works organically

  1265. as I've said.

  1266. And Johnny

  1267. will show us

  1268. over the next

  1269. couple of weeks

  1270. about the image

  1271. of the body

  1272. and the family

  1273. over the next

  1274. two Sundays.

  1275. So again,

  1276. there's more

  1277. about the church

  1278. than what has

  1279. been said this

  1280. morning.

  1281. But institutionally

  1282. as a kingdom,

  1283. we exercise the

  1284. keys as a

  1285. church.

  1286. I'm just going

  1287. to put up a

  1288. slide there with

  1289. some examples,

  1290. but let me just

  1291. highlight a few

  1292. of them.

  1293. So some examples

  1294. of what it means

  1295. to be members

  1296. of the kingdom,

  1297. some examples

  1298. of the organizational

  1299. skeleton of the

  1300. church.

  1301. So the members

  1302. of this church

  1303. welcome in new

  1304. members.

  1305. That's the who

  1306. of the gospel.

  1307. We welcome

  1308. them in as

  1309. fellow members.

  1310. We recognize

  1311. their confession.

  1312. We recognize

  1313. them as a true

  1314. confessor.

  1315. The members

  1316. of this church

  1317. maintain a

  1318. statement of

  1319. faith, the

  1320. what of the

  1321. gospel.

  1322. It's another

  1323. way that we

  1324. exercise the

  1325. keys.

  1326. We pass

  1327. judgment on

  1328. what is the

  1329. gospel.

  1330. The members

  1331. of this church

  1332. recognizes and

  1333. affirms its own

  1334. leaders.

  1335. It's an

  1336. incredible

  1337. responsibility that

  1338. we call

  1339. faithful men

  1340. who hold to

  1341. and live out

  1342. in an exemplary

  1343. fashion the

  1344. deep truths of

  1345. the gospel as

  1346. our elders.

  1347. I'm going to

  1348. give one

  1349. example.

  1350. The members

  1351. back in

  1352. February 2019,

  1353. we debated

  1354. and voted on

  1355. a proposal to

  1356. add this to

  1357. our statement

  1358. of faith at

  1359. a members

  1360. meeting in

  1361. February 2019.

  1362. Let me read

  1363. it out.

  1364. Humanity,

  1365. number four,

  1366. we have about

  1367. a dozen or

  1368. so parts to

  1369. our statement

  1370. of faith.

  1371. We believe

  1372. in the

  1373. creation of

  1374. humanity,

  1375. male and

  1376. female,

  1377. by God

  1378. and in

  1379. the image

  1380. of God,

  1381. equal in

  1382. value and

  1383. complementary

  1384. in role,

  1385. the creation

  1386. ordinance of

  1387. marriage as

  1388. a lifelong

  1389. exclusive

  1390. union between

  1391. one man

  1392. and one

  1393. woman.

  1394. This one

  1395. flesh union

  1396. establishes the

  1397. only normative

  1398. pattern of

  1399. sexual relations

  1400. for men

  1401. and women.

  1402. And a number

  1403. of scripture

  1404. references are

  1405. given.

  1406. Why did we

  1407. do this as

  1408. members of

  1409. the church?

  1410. Because God's

  1411. good design for

  1412. humanity,

  1413. his creation

  1414. of us as

  1415. men and

  1416. women,

  1417. is a gospel

  1418. shaping issue.

  1419. An issue

  1420. that in the

  1421. past all

  1422. Christian churches

  1423. would have

  1424. assumed.

  1425. They wouldn't

  1426. have written

  1427. this down

  1428. in this

  1429. form,

  1430. but now

  1431. must be

  1432. something

  1433. explicitly

  1434. said to

  1435. ensure that

  1436. our confession

  1437. of the

  1438. gospel is

  1439. in keeping

  1440. with what

  1441. the Bible

  1442. says.

  1443. Now,

  1444. what does

  1445. this mean

  1446. for you

  1447. this morning

  1448. as you

  1449. listen to

  1450. this teaching,

  1451. this sermon

  1452. on the

  1453. church and

  1454. membership?

  1455. firstly,

  1456. if you

  1457. aren't a

  1458. Christian

  1459. this morning,

  1460. Jesus is

  1461. calling you

  1462. to himself.

  1463. Jesus is

  1464. the king

  1465. who lays

  1466. down his

  1467. life for

  1468. his subjects.

  1469. And so

  1470. Jesus calls

  1471. you to turn

  1472. away from

  1473. living for

  1474. yourself,

  1475. to repent

  1476. of your

  1477. sin,

  1478. and to put

  1479. your trust

  1480. in him.

  1481. Don't delay.

  1482. pray and

  1483. ask for

  1484. the forgiveness

  1485. of your

  1486. sins today.

  1487. If you're

  1488. a member

  1489. of this

  1490. church,

  1491. Christ has

  1492. saved you,

  1493. and he has

  1494. brought you

  1495. into membership

  1496. to keep

  1497. you,

  1498. and to

  1499. keep his

  1500. gospel.

  1501. And you

  1502. and I

  1503. have this

  1504. job together

  1505. as members

  1506. of ensuring

  1507. that the

  1508. gospel remains

  1509. clear and

  1510. at the

  1511. center of

  1512. all that we

  1513. do as a

  1514. church.

  1515. And I

  1516. need you,

  1517. and you

  1518. need me,

  1519. and we

  1520. need one

  1521. another to

  1522. keep the

  1523. gospel.

  1524. Are you

  1525. growing closer

  1526. to the

  1527. members of

  1528. the church?

  1529. Are you

  1530. fulfilling your

  1531. role as

  1532. holders of

  1533. the keys

  1534. that Christ

  1535. has given?

  1536. Or as a

  1537. member, do you

  1538. leave it to

  1539. others when

  1540. it is Jesus

  1541. that has

  1542. called you?

  1543. If you're

  1544. a Christian

  1545. and you're

  1546. not a

  1547. member, can

  1548. I simply

  1549. ask why

  1550. not?

  1551. I ask to

  1552. prompt some

  1553. reflection on

  1554. what Jesus

  1555. says through

  1556. his word.

  1557. For some

  1558. of you, the

  1559. idea of

  1560. membership and

  1561. authority and

  1562. keys and all

  1563. this talk might

  1564. be very new.

  1565. So if you

  1566. are a new

  1567. Christian or

  1568. a young

  1569. Christian or

  1570. something you've

  1571. not considered,

  1572. Jesus says

  1573. that you're to

  1574. be baptized and

  1575. to become a

  1576. member of a

  1577. local church.

  1578. And you are

  1579. welcome, I

  1580. would say, even

  1581. as a child, if

  1582. you know and

  1583. love the Lord and

  1584. you can understand

  1585. these things, as

  1586. a child or even

  1587. as a new

  1588. Christian, to be

  1589. a member of

  1590. the church here

  1591. in Carragoline.

  1592. Maybe you've

  1593. thought about

  1594. membership before,

  1595. it's just not

  1596. something for me.

  1597. I've thought

  1598. about it, it's

  1599. just, you know.

  1600. But what makes

  1601. it something for

  1602. others and then

  1603. not something for

  1604. you?

  1605. How do we end

  1606. up with those

  1607. categories?

  1608. It's worth

  1609. coming again to

  1610. the Lord and

  1611. bringing to him

  1612. whatever it is

  1613. that keeps you

  1614. from fully

  1615. linking arms

  1616. with the other

  1617. Christians in this

  1618. church.

  1619. for some, I

  1620. know it is

  1621. previous hurts,

  1622. it is bad

  1623. experiences of

  1624. church life,

  1625. maybe even

  1626. within this

  1627. church, that

  1628. would hold you

  1629. back.

  1630. You're still

  1631. happy to attend,

  1632. confident to

  1633. fellowship, to

  1634. receive pastoral

  1635. care, to give

  1636. to the church

  1637. financially, and

  1638. even to say,

  1639. well, this is my

  1640. church.

  1641. church.

  1642. I understand

  1643. that it can be

  1644. hard to have

  1645. confidence to

  1646. become a member

  1647. of a local

  1648. church.

  1649. And what I

  1650. would say is

  1651. whatever your

  1652. situation, if

  1653. you're a young

  1654. Christian, a new

  1655. Christian, a

  1656. Christian that's

  1657. thought about

  1658. this before and

  1659. just said, not

  1660. for me, Christ

  1661. has called you to

  1662. be under the

  1663. care and the

  1664. oversight of a

  1665. local church for

  1666. your sake, for

  1667. the sake of

  1668. others, and for

  1669. the sake of the

  1670. gospel.

  1671. We are not

  1672. called to put up

  1673. boundaries.

  1674. We're not called

  1675. to stay outside on

  1676. our terms.

  1677. It's his church.

  1678. The gospel is

  1679. lived out in

  1680. community with

  1681. others.

  1682. To be a member

  1683. of the church is

  1684. to stand with

  1685. others, saved by

  1686. grace, and to

  1687. affirm one

  1688. another's profession

  1689. of faith, and to

  1690. have insurance

  1691. together as we

  1692. link arms.

  1693. That's where

  1694. Jesus wants you

  1695. to be, assured

  1696. in the faith,

  1697. linking arms with

  1698. others.

  1699. There's much

  1700. more to the

  1701. church than

  1702. what we looked

  1703. at this morning,

  1704. so I pray that

  1705. we can hear the

  1706. words of Jesus

  1707. clearly over

  1708. these coming

  1709. weeks, and see

  1710. his good design

  1711. in this world

  1712. to provide

  1713. embassies on

  1714. earth for his

  1715. kingdom through

  1716. local churches

  1717. that are full of

  1718. members who

  1719. preserve, protect,

  1720. and proclaim the

  1721. gospel together.

  1722. Let's pray.

  1723. King Jesus, you

  1724. thankfully rule

  1725. over the

  1726. heavens and the

  1727. whole earth.

  1728. Nothing is hidden

  1729. from your sight.

  1730. You know all our

  1731. hearts, and we are

  1732. laid bare before

  1733. you, what you say

  1734. in your word, and

  1735. by your Holy

  1736. Spirit every time.

  1737. Father, I pray that

  1738. our hearts would be

  1739. lifted up towards

  1740. you this morning,

  1741. that we would love

  1742. you more, that we

  1743. would have a godly

  1744. jealousy for your

  1745. name, for your

  1746. kingdom, for your

  1747. gospel, that we

  1748. would have a deeper

  1749. and wider and more

  1750. generous love for one

  1751. another.

  1752. And Father, that the

  1753. bonds of Christian

  1754. love and unity would

  1755. be strengthened in

  1756. Cargoline Baptist

  1757. Church.

  1758. We need one

  1759. another to hold

  1760. those keys, to

  1761. keep the gospel, to

1762. pass it on, and to

  1763. help one another to

  1764. stay the course.

  1765. Oh Jesus, you are

  1766. gracious and kind.

  1767. Father, you have

  1768. given us your

  1769. only Son, and you

  1770. have poured out your

  1771. Spirit into our

  1772. lives.

  1773. You have given us

  1774. everything that we

  1775. need for life and

  1776. godliness, and we

  1777. thank you for that.

  1778. All glory be to

  1779. you.

  1780. Amen.

  1781. Amen.

  1782. It said,
