  1. If you've got your Bibles there, would you please turn to Mark's Gospel, Chapter 3.

  2. ! We're going to be reading that in just a sec.

  3. Thank you.

  4. Thank you.

  5. We've been looking at members of the kingdom.

  6. Last week we looked at members of the family.

  7. Last week members of the body and today we're looking at members of the family.

  8. And just as a reminder that as a follow-up, we meet on Wednesday evening across the road in the Lion's Centre

  9. where we get to follow up on what we've been looking at on the morning time.

  10. So we're going to have a specific focus on Wednesday on baptism and the Lord's Supper

  11. and how they are connected and how they relate to church life.

  12. So please come along and a great opportunity to discuss in small group and ask your questions together.

  13. Father, we're going to pray first and then look at God's Word.

  14. Father, thank you for your good gifts to us.

  15. Thank you for your word and thank you for your spirit.

  16. And we pray that you would speak to us afresh, helping us to see what it means to be members of the family.

  17. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  18. A couple of questions to start with.

  19. Did you come here this morning with family?

  20. Did you come here with family?

  21. Or are you coming here to meet with family?

  22. Or are you here alone?

  23. Or are you gathering with brothers and sisters?

  24. You see, how we answer those questions will tell us a lot about how we understand church and how we relate to church.

  25. You see, the Bible uses many different word pictures to describe the church.

  26. So the church is like a kingdom and Jesus is our King who rules over us.

  27. We saw last week that the church is like a body and Jesus is our head who is the source of all true life.

  28. The church is like a bride and Jesus is our husband who in love gives his life for us.

  29. But there's one picture, there's one description that is deeper and richer than all the rest.

  30. And it gets to the very heart of what it means to be church.

  31. And it's simply this.

  32. The church is a family.

  33. The church is a family.

  34. The Bible doesn't say the church is like a family.

  35. It's like a kingdom, like a body, like a bride.

  36. But the Bible says we are a family.

  37. Consider with me what Jesus said about the church and family.

  38. And get ready for a surprise.

  39. Look at Mark chapter 3 verse 31.

    Mark 3:31

  40. Mark chapter 3 verse 31.

    Mark 3:31

  41. Jesus had been in a discussion with some of the religious leaders

  42. and his own biological family arrive.

  43. Let's pick it up in verse 31.

  44. Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived.

  45. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call for Jesus.

  46. A crowd was sitting around Jesus and they told him,

  47. Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.

  48. Who are my mother and my brothers, he asked.

  49. Then he looked at those seated in the circle around him and he said,

  50. Here are my mother and my brothers.

  51. For whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother.

  52. Isn't that surprising?

  53. Jesus redefines our understanding of family.

  54. He shows us that our true family are those who do the will of God.

  55. That is, those who are of the faith.

  56. Jesus.

  57. Or have a look at Mark chapter 10.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  58. And verse 29.

  59. Mark chapter 10 verse 29.

    Mark 10:29

  60. Here, Jesus has been talking about what it means to follow Jesus.

  61. The cost.

  62. So sometimes when we follow him,

  63. it means that people will go against us.

  64. So pick it up in, sorry, we'll pick it up in verse 28.

  65. Then Peter spoke up and said to Jesus and the others,

  66. We have left everything to follow you.

  67. Truly I tell you, Jesus replied,

  68. No one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields,

  69. that is all their resources for me and the gospel,

  70. will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age.

  71. Homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields,

  72. along with persecution and in the age to come, eternal life.

  73. Did you see that?

  74. If we follow Jesus,

  75. it may mean that our family will fall out with us,

  76. but we gain a hundred times more in terms of family.

  77. You see, Jesus is making it crystal clear.

  78. It's not biology that connects us,

  79. but our relationship and commitment to Jesus.

  80. So to go back to those questions we asked at the very beginning,

  81. if we are Christians,

  82. we have come primarily to meet with family.

  83. If we are followers of Jesus,

  84. we are gathering with our brothers and sisters.

  85. Now that doesn't mean to say that our biological families are not important

  86. and that we should dismiss them.

  87. They are vitally important.

  88. And the Bible has a lot to say about our families.

  89. Parents, if you are a parent here today,

  90. you are to nurture and care for your children,

  91. to teach them God's word and to remind them of what the Bible says.

  92. And children, if you are a child,

  93. you are to obey your parents,

  94. to honour them.

  95. In fact, if we don't care for our families,

  96. if we don't look after our families,

  97. it's a sure sign of unbelief.

  98. Look at the screen here,

  99. this verse from 1 Timothy.

  100. Anyone who does not provide for their relatives

  101. and especially for their own household

  102. or their own family

  103. has denied the faith

  104. and is worse than an unbeliever.

  105. You see, our biological family responsibilities

  106. and our duties and care for one another

  107. are not to be in competition with the church family.

  108. Rather, our biological families

  109. are there to point us

  110. towards our true family,

  111. our ultimate family,

  112. the church.

  113. One writer put it like this.

  114. This changes everything

  115. about what it means to be in a family.

  116. For those with healthy, close families,

  117. it lifts their eyes to an even greater reality.

  118. For those whose families are dysfunctional

  119. or are lonely, abandoned, orphaned or divorced,

  120. it is a warm invitation into a real family.

  121. You see, our biological families,

  122. yes, they are a gift from God,

  123. but they are not an end in themselves.

  124. They are to point us to

  125. our true and greater reality,

  126. our real family.

  127. So how do you and I,

  128. how do we get to enjoy this greater reality?

  129. How do we experience this true family?

  130. Well, turn with me, please,

  131. to Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  132. Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  133. Haven't got a page number.

  134. 1,202.

  135. 1,202.

  136. Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  137. And we're going to be looking at verse 10,

  138. just a few verses.

  139. But in this chapter,

  140. we see God's plan

  141. and God's design

  142. for humanity.

  143. What God longs for,

  144. what he's working towards.

  145. And there's three things

  146. that I want us to notice

  147. and to pay attention

  148. to the language

  149. that is used.

  150. The first thing to notice is

  151. that God is our Father

  152. and we are his sons

  153. and daughters.

  154. God is our Father

  155. and we are his sons and daughters.

  156. God's plan, verse 10,

  157. is to bring

  158. many sons and daughters

  159. to glory.

  160. that he would have

  161. many sons and daughters

  162. in his kingdom.

  163. Well, how does God do that?

  164. Well, God sends his own son,

  165. Jesus,

  166. to be the one

  167. who brings

  168. many sons and daughters

  169. to the Father.

  170. Jesus is our pioneer.

  171. That's the phrase

  172. to focus in on

  173. on verse 10.

  174. Halfway through,

  175. it talks about Jesus

  176. being the pioneer

  177. of their salvation.

  178. Now, a pioneer

  179. is someone who goes

  180. where no one

  181. has gone before.

  182. They cut their way

  183. through

  184. so that others

  185. can follow.

  186. Well, Jesus is described

  187. here as the pioneer

  188. of our salvation.

  189. He represents us.

  190. Jesus goes before us

  191. and dies the death

  192. that we deserve

  193. for our sin.

  194. Jesus goes before us

  195. and lives the perfect life

  196. that we could never live.

  197. Jesus paves the way.

  198. He cuts a path

  199. for the sons and daughters

  200. to be able to come

  201. to the Father.

  202. You could think of it

  203. like this

  204. as we imagine

  205. a huge big forest

  206. and in the centre

  207. of the forest

  208. is the king

  209. in his castle.

  210. But surrounding it

  211. is this thick forest

  212. unpenetrable

  213. no way through.

  214. But one is able to

  215. who cuts a path

  216. through that jungle

  217. to the castle

  218. to the king

  219. to bring

  220. the lost

  221. sons and daughters

  222. back

  223. to their king.

  224. Well, that in a sense

  225. is what Jesus is doing.

  226. He's cutting through.

  227. He's paving the way

  228. for sons and daughters

  229. to get

  230. to their father

  231. king.

  232. So how do I know

  233. if I am a child

  234. of the king?

  235. How do I know

  236. I am a son

  237. or daughter?

  238. Well, it's the sons

  239. and daughters

  240. who follow Jesus.

  241. So if you

  242. are following

  243. Jesus today,

  244. if you are trusting

  245. in him,

  246. you are

  247. a son

  248. or a daughter

  249. of the Father.

  250. And as we

  251. walk

  252. with Jesus,

  253. we have the

  254. awesome privilege

  255. of calling God

  256. our Father.

  257. Jesus

  258. cuts a path

  259. so that he

  260. may bring

  261. many sons

  262. and daughters

  263. to glory.

  264. God is our

  265. Father

  266. and we can be

  267. his sons

  268. and daughters.

  269. But there's

  270. a second picture

  271. and that is

  272. Jesus is our

  273. brother

  274. and we are

  275. his

  276. brothers

  277. and sisters.

  278. Because God

  279. is our Father

  280. and we are

  281. sons and daughters.

  282. Look at the end

  283. of verse 11.

  284. So Jesus

  285. is not ashamed

  286. to call them

  287. brothers

  288. and sisters.

  289. You see,

  290. if you

  291. are a son

  292. or a daughter

  293. of the Father,

  294. Jesus

  295. is your

  296. brother.

  297. Jesus

  298. delights

  299. over us.

  300. He's not

  301. ashamed of you,

  302. it says in

  303. verse 11.

  304. No matter what

  305. we've said

  306. or done

  307. or no matter

  308. how many

  309. times we turn,

  310. he never

  311. is ashamed

  312. of you.

  313. He loves

  314. you

  315. deeply.

  316. Jesus

  317. is your

  318. brother.

  319. In fact,

  320. Jesus

  321. praises

  322. the Father

  323. for the

  324. new

  325. brothers

  326. and sisters

  327. he has

  328. received.

  329. Look at

  330. verse 12.

  331. He says,

  332. I will

  333. declare

  334. your name

  335. to my

  336. brothers

  337. and sisters.

  338. I will

  339. tell

  340. your sons

  341. and daughters,

  342. I will

  343. tell them

  344. that we

  345. are of

  346. the same

  347. family,

  348. we have

  349. the same

  350. Father.

  351. I will

  352. declare

  353. your name

  354. to my

  355. brothers

  356. and sisters

  357. in the

  358. assembly.

  359. I will

  360. sing

  361. your

  362. praises.

  363. It's

  364. like a

  365. child

  366. who's

  367. been told

  368. they're

  369. going to

  370. have a

  371. new

  372. brother

  373. or

  374. sister

  375. in their

  376. family.

  377. Well,

  378. they can't

  379. help but

  380. tell everybody,

  381. I'm going

  382. to have

  383. a brother

  384. or I'm

  385. going to

  386. have a

  387. sister.

  388. They

  389. delight

  390. in

  391. sharing

  392. that.

  393. So

  394. Jesus

  395. in the

  396. same

  397. way

  398. longs

  399. to

  400. delight

  401. over

  402. us.

  403. He

  404. longs

  405. to

  406. tell

  407. us

  408. and

  409. reassure

  410. us

  411. that

  412. God

  413. is

  414. our

  415. father

  416. and

  417. Jesus

  418. is

  419. our

  420. brother.

  421. He

  422. is

  423. the

  424. true

  425. brother

  426. who

  427. gives

  428. his

  429. life

  430. for

  431. us

  432. so

  433. that

  434. we

  435. might

  436. enjoy

  437. and

  438. experience

  439. life

  440. in

  441. his

  442. family.

  443. Look at

  444. how it's

  445. put at

  446. the

  447. beginning

  448. of

  449. verse

  450. 11.

  451. Both

  452. the

  453. one

  454. who

  455. makes

  456. people

  457. holy,

  458. that's

  459. Jesus,

  460. he's

  461. the

  462. maker

  463. of

  464. people

  465. to

  466. make

  467. them

  468. holy,

  469. to put

  470. them

  471. in a

  472. right

  473. relationship

  474. with

  475. God,

  476. and

  477. those

  478. who

  479. are

  480. made

  481. holy

  482. are

  483. of

  484. the

  485. same

  486. family.

  487. Isn't

  488. that

  489. wonderful?

  490. God

  491. is

  492. our

  493. father,

  494. Jesus

  495. is

  496. our

  497. brother.

  498. And

  499. the

  500. third

  501. picture

  502. that

  503. we'll

  504. see

  505. is

  506. that

  507. the

  508. spirit

  509. is

  510. our

  511. bond.

  512. That

  513. is

  514. the

  515. church

  516. is

  517. now

  518. our

  519. family.

  520. You

  521. see

  522. because

  523. God

  524. is

  525. our

  526. father

  527. and

  528. Jesus

  529. is

  530. our

  531. brother

  532. we

  533. are

  534. now

  535. brothers

  536. and

  537. sisters

  538. of

  539. each

  540. other.

  541. That's

  542. the

  543. work

  544. of

  545. the

  546. Holy

  547. Spirit.

  548. uniting

  549. us

  550. and

  551. bringing

  552. us

  553. together.

  554. Paul

  555. puts

  556. it

  557. like

  558. this

  559. in

  560. Romans

  561. 8.

  562. Is

  563. that

  564. right?

  565. No.

  566. I'll

  567. just

  568. read it.

  569. The

  570. spirit

  571. himself

  572. testifies

  573. with

  574. our

  575. spirit

  576. that

  577. we

  578. are

  579. God's

  580. children.

  581. It's

  582. the

  583. spirit

  584. who

  585. unites

  586. and

  587. brings

  588. us

  589. together.

  590. So

  591. now

  592. look

  593. at

  594. how

  595. the

  596. author

  597. of

  598. Hebrews

  599. now

  600. writes

  601. to

  602. this

  603. local

  604. church.

  605. Look

  606. at

  607. the

  608. language

  609. that

  610. he

  611. uses.

  612. Because

  613. we're

  614. of

  615. the

  616. same

  617. family,

  618. God

  619. is

  620. our

  621. father,

  622. Jesus

  623. is

  624. our

  625. brother.

  626. Look at

  627. chapter 3

  628. verse 1.

  629. Therefore,

  630. holy

  631. brothers

  632. and sisters

  633. who share

  634. in the

  635. heavenly

  636. calling,

  637. those who

  638. are sons

  639. and daughters

  640. of the

  641. Father,

  642. fix

  643. your

  644. thoughts

  645. on

  646. Jesus.

  647. look at

  648. verse 12,

  649. chapter 3

  650. verse 12.

  651. This is

  652. what we're

  653. to do

  654. together.

  655. See

  656. to it,

  657. brothers

  658. and

  659. sisters,

  660. that none

  661. of you

  662. has a

  663. sinful,

  664. unbelieving

  665. heart that

  666. turns away

  667. from the

  668. living God,

  669. but encourage

  670. one another

  671. daily,

  672. as long

  673. as it is

  674. called

  675. today,

  676. so that

  677. none

  678. of you

  679. may be

  680. hardened

  681. by sin's

  682. deceitfulness.

  683. or have

  684. a look

  685. at chapter

  686. 10,

  687. verse 19.

  688. This is

  689. the bond

  690. of the

  691. Spirit

  692. uniting

  693. us

  694. together.

  695. Chapter

  696. 10,

  697. verse 19,

  698. therefore,

  699. brothers

  700. and sisters,

  701. and he

  702. goes on,

  703. because of

  704. what Jesus

  705. has done

  706. for us,

  707. verse 23,

  708. let us

  709. together as

  710. brothers and

  711. sisters,

  712. hold unswervingly

  713. to the hope

  714. we profess,

  715. for he who

  716. promised is

  717. faithful,

  718. and let us,

  719. the brothers

  720. and sisters,

  721. consider how

  722. we may spur

  723. one another

  724. on towards

  725. love and good

  726. deeds,

  727. not giving up

  728. meeting together

  729. as some are in

  730. the habit of

  731. doing,

  732. but encouraging

  733. the brothers

  734. and sisters

  735. and all the

  736. more as you

  737. see the day

  738. approaching.

  739. Or chapter

  740. 13,

  741. verse 1.

  742. Keep on

  743. loving one

  744. another as

  745. brothers and

  746. sisters.

  747. You see,

  748. the Spirit

  749. of God

  750. unites the

  751. children of

  752. God to

  753. be the

  754. family of

  755. God.

  756. The Spirit

  757. of God

  758. unites the

  759. children of

  760. God to

  761. be the

  762. family of

  763. God,

  764. and it

  765. radically

  766. changes how

  767. we now

  768. view each

  769. other and

  770. how we

  771. see each

  772. other.

  773. The Apostle

  774. Paul,

  775. writing to

  776. Timothy,

  777. who is a

  778. young pastor,

  779. helps him

  780. see how he

  781. should view

  782. his congregation,

  783. how he

  784. should think

  785. about people

  786. in the life

  787. of the

  788. church,

  789. and I

  790. think it

  791. applies to

  792. us as

  793. well.

  794. You can

  795. follow it

  796. on the

  797. screen.

  798. Do not

  799. rebuke an

  800. older man

  801. harshly,

  802. but exhort

  803. him as if

  804. he were

  805. your father.

  806. So if

  807. there's an

  808. older man

  809. here,

  810. somebody

  811. older than

  812. what you

  813. are,

  814. you are to

  815. treat him

  816. as your

  817. father.

  818. brother.

  819. If you're

  820. a young

  821. man,

  822. treat younger

  823. men as

  824. brothers.

  825. And the

  826. older women,

  827. treat them

  828. as your

  829. mothers.

  830. And the

  831. younger women,

  832. treat them

  833. as sisters

  834. with absolute

  835. purity.

  836. You see,

  837. it changes

  838. the whole

  839. dynamic,

  840. doesn't it?

  841. So whatever

  842. our experience

  843. as a family,

  844. if it's been

  845. a healthy

  846. family,

  847. it points

  848. to a

  849. greater

  850. family.

  851. If it's

  852. been painful

  853. and a

  854. hard experience,

  855. it points

  856. beyond that

  857. to a

  858. better

  859. family,

  860. a family

  861. where we

  862. are united

  863. together by

  864. the Spirit

  865. to be the

  866. family of

  867. God,

  868. where we

  869. are joined

  870. together to

  871. encourage one

  872. another to

  873. keep on in

  874. the faith,

  875. to keep

  876. following

  877. Jesus.

  878. Jesus.

  879. Well, you

  880. may say,

  881. well, that

  882. sounds great,

  883. but you

  884. know what?

  885. That hasn't

  886. been my

  887. experience.

  888. You see, some

  889. of you may

  890. feel hurt

  891. by the

  892. church.

  893. Maybe

  894. someone was

  895. critical and

  896. spoke harshly

  897. to you.

  898. Maybe you

  899. experienced

  900. rejection or

  901. maybe being

  902. ostracized or

  903. being left

  904. out and

  905. you're screaming

  906. inside saying,

  907. well, I

  908. don't trust

  909. the church.

  910. Well, I

  911. want to

  912. acknowledge that

  913. for some that

  914. might be the

  915. case.

  916. But before

  917. turning our

  918. back on

  919. the church,

  920. I want us

  921. all to think

  922. about our

  923. expectations of

  924. the church

  925. family.

  926. First,

  927. family life

  928. is messy.

  929. Family life

  930. is messy.

  931. We often

  932. say, if

  933. you're looking

  934. for the

  935. perfect church,

  936. you won't

  937. find it

  938. here.

  939. And if

  940. you think

  941. you're

  942. perfect,

  943. don't bother

  944. coming along

  945. because you'll

  946. be very

  947. disappointed.

  948. You see,

  949. none of us

  950. is perfect.

  951. We all

  952. fail and

  953. we all

  954. fall.

  955. We've all

  956. said things.

  957. I know I've

  958. said things and

  959. done things

  960. sort of

  961. upset people.

  962. When we

  963. do our

  964. marriage

  965. preparation

  966. classes,

  967. one of the

  968. questions I

  969. love to

  970. ask is,

  971. to the

  972. two who

  973. are sitting

  974. there,

  975. what happens

  976. when two

  977. lovers come

  978. together in

  979. marriage?

  980. Of course,

  981. they always

  982. say,

  983. love,

  984. deeper love,

  985. greater love.

  986. Well,

  987. the answer,

  988. of course,

  989. is conflict

  990. and division.

  991. Why?

  992. Because we

  993. are lovers

  994. of self.

  995. And when

  996. you bring

  997. two lovers

  998. of self

  999. coming together,

  1000. well,

  1001. you get

  1002. conflict

  1003. and division.

  1004. And that's

  1005. what can

  1006. happen in

  1007. the life

  1008. of the

  1009. church.

  1010. We're a

  1011. bunch of

  1012. sinners

  1013. coming

  1014. together.

  1015. Yes,

  1016. we have

  1017. been saved.

  1018. Yes,

  1019. God is

  1020. our father.

  1021. Yes,

  1022. we're

  1023. brothers

  1024. and

  1025. sisters,

  1026. but just

  1027. as we

  1028. do in

  1029. our own

  1030. biological

  1031. family,

  1032. say and

  1033. do things

  1034. that hurt,

  1035. so within

  1036. the church

  1037. family,

  1038. there's a

  1039. whole bunch

  1040. of people

  1041. coming

  1042. together,

  1043. and we

  1044. can get

  1045. it wrong.

  1046. Rather than

  1047. serve others,

  1048. we can love

  1049. self.

  1050. That's why

  1051. we have all

  1052. these encouragements

  1053. in the Bible

  1054. that we read

  1055. in Hebrews.

  1056. Love each

  1057. other.

  1058. Forgive

  1059. one another.

  1060. Carry each

  1061. other's

  1062. burdens.

  1063. Be patient

  1064. with one

  1065. another.

  1066. Spur one

  1067. another on

  1068. to love

  1069. and good

  1070. deeds.

  1071. Let's

  1072. not give

  1073. up meeting

  1074. together.

  1075. Well,

  1076. if the

  1077. church was

  1078. perfect,

  1079. we would

  1080. never have

  1081. these commands

  1082. or correctives.

  1083. But it's

  1084. because we

  1085. get it

  1086. wrong that

  1087. we're reminded

  1088. of who we

  1089. are to be.

  1090. So can I

  1091. encourage us

  1092. all to

  1093. adjust your

  1094. expectation

  1095. and bring

  1096. it down

  1097. some notches

  1098. because family

  1099. life is

  1100. messy and

  1101. we're all

  1102. broken.

  1103. So having

  1104. adjusted

  1105. down, I

  1106. want us

  1107. now to

  1108. ratchet up

  1109. and have a

  1110. great expectation

  1111. because not

  1112. only are we

  1113. messy, family

  1114. life is

  1115. graceful.

  1116. you see, the

  1117. church is a

  1118. family where

  1119. broken and

  1120. messy people

  1121. like us

  1122. find grace.

  1123. We are

  1124. people who

  1125. walk together

  1126. back to

  1127. the cross.

  1128. Here we

  1129. remember our

  1130. true brother

  1131. Jesus Christ

  1132. who gave his

  1133. life for us

  1134. so that we

  1135. could be

  1136. sons and

  1137. daughters of

  1138. the father

  1139. and together

  1140. we lean in

  1141. on the spirit

  1142. strength and

  1143. power to

  1144. live as we

  1145. should.

  1146. James puts

  1147. it like

  1148. this.

  1149. This is a

  1150. great thing

  1151. we can do

  1152. for each

  1153. other if

  1154. we drift

  1155. or fall

  1156. away.

  1157. My brothers

  1158. and sisters,

  1159. if one of

  1160. you should

  1161. wander from

  1162. the truth

  1163. and someone

  1164. should bring

  1165. that person

  1166. back,

  1167. remember

  1168. this,

  1169. whoever

  1170. turns a

  1171. sinner from

  1172. the error

  1173. of their

  1174. way will

  1175. save them

  1176. from death

  1177. and cover

  1178. over a

  1179. multitude

  1180. of sins.

  1181. You see,

  1182. when conflict

  1183. happens,

  1184. when fallout

  1185. happens,

  1186. when we

  1187. say and do

  1188. the wrong

  1189. thing,

  1190. we don't

  1191. pull away

  1192. from each

  1193. other,

  1194. we come

  1195. together

  1196. and go

  1197. to the

  1198. cross

  1199. and we

  1200. receive the

  1201. grace and

  1202. mercy

  1203. that we

  1204. need.

  1205. Together

  1206. we're

  1207. committed

  1208. as brothers

  1209. and sisters

  1210. to bring

  1211. each other

  1212. back to

  1213. God.

  1214. Now,

  1215. the way

  1216. we do

  1217. this as

  1218. a church

  1219. is through

  1220. a church

  1221. covenant.

  1222. It's a

  1223. commitment

  1224. to one

  1225. another.

  1226. Just as

  1227. God is

  1228. committed

  1229. to us

  1230. and never

  1231. turns away

  1232. from us,

  1233. so we

  1234. as a

  1235. church

  1236. strive to

  1237. be

  1238. gracious

  1239. to one

  1240. another,

  1241. to not

  1242. give up

  1243. on each

  1244. other,

  1245. but to

  1246. pursue

  1247. life with

  1248. each

  1249. other.

  1250. A

  1251. covenant

  1252. may be

  1253. a new

  1254. word to

  1255. you,

  1256. but it's

  1257. simply a

  1258. promise

  1259. between

  1260. two

  1261. parties

  1262. into

  1263. a

  1264. committed

  1265. relationship.

  1266. So think

  1267. of a

  1268. marriage.

  1269. A man

  1270. and a

  1271. woman

  1272. come

  1273. together

  1274. to make

  1275. promises,

  1276. to be

  1277. loyal to

  1278. one

  1279. another,

  1280. to love

  1281. each

  1282. other.

  1283. They give

  1284. rings,

  1285. and here's

  1286. me looking

  1287. for my

  1288. ring now,

  1289. and I

  1290. haven't got

  1291. my ring.

  1292. Don't

  1293. worry,

  1294. our

  1295. marriage

  1296. is good,

  1297. just don't

  1298. have it

  1299. on.

  1300. So there

  1301. we have

  1302. it.

  1303. Yes,

  1304. I'm totally

  1305. lost now,

  1306. aren't I?

  1307. So it is

  1308. for the

  1309. local,

  1310. oh yeah,

  1311. thanks.

  1312. So here

  1313. we have

  1314. the local

  1315. church.

  1316. We're

  1317. committing

  1318. to one

  1319. another,

  1320. and our

  1321. covenant,

  1322. our church

  1323. covenant

  1324. that we

  1325. have

  1326. recognizes

  1327. it,

  1328. that as

  1329. believers

  1330. coming

  1331. together,

  1332. we submit

  1333. to one

  1334. another,

  1335. and support

  1336. each other.

  1337. So I

  1338. want us to

  1339. go through

  1340. it.

  1341. You might

  1342. have it

  1343. on your

  1344. notes if

  1345. you got

  1346. this sheet

  1347. this morning.

  1348. If not,

  1349. you can

  1350. see it

  1351. on the

  1352. screen.

  1353. Yes,

  1354. we are a

  1355. family who

  1356. are broken

  1357. and messy,

  1358. but we are

  1359. a family

  1360. who are

  1361. graceful,

  1362. and here's

  1363. how we

  1364. show that

  1365. grace to

  1366. one another

  1367. by committing

  1368. to each

  1369. other.

  1370. You can

  1371. follow along

  1372. on the

  1373. screen.

  1374. Recognizing

  1375. our own

  1376. unworthiness

  1377. and inability.

  1378. Isn't that

  1379. great?

  1380. Our own

  1381. unworthiness

  1382. and inability.

  1383. We're a

  1384. mess,

  1385. we're broken.

  1386. So we

  1387. come in

  1388. total

  1389. dependence

  1390. upon God.

  1391. We now

  1392. covenant to

  1393. give ourselves

  1394. first to

  1395. God,

  1396. and then to

  1397. this local

  1398. church.

  1399. And here's

  1400. the commitment.

  1401. First,

  1402. that we

  1403. will endeavor

  1404. to walk

  1405. in holiness

  1406. and brotherly

  1407. love,

  1408. being concerned

  1409. to honor

  1410. God in

  1411. our lives,

  1412. and encourage

  1413. one another

  1414. to love

  1415. and good

  1416. works,

  1417. and to

  1418. pray for

  1419. one another,

  1420. and to

  1421. bear each

  1422. other's

  1423. burdens.

  1424. Two,

  1425. that we

  1426. will at

  1427. all times

  1428. be loyal

  1429. to each

  1430. other,

  1431. being patient

  1432. with one

  1433. another's

  1434. weaknesses

  1435. and failings,

  1436. seeking to

  1437. maintain unity

  1438. and avoid

  1439. all causes

  1440. of division.

  1441. Three,

  1442. that we

  1443. will endeavor

  1444. to meet

  1445. together on

  1446. the Lord's

  1447. Day and

  1448. at all the

  1449. other meetings

  1450. of the

  1451. church,

  1452. as we

  1453. have

  1454. opportunity,

  1455. encouraging

  1456. one another

  1457. by our

  1458. attendance.

  1459. And then

  1460. fourth,

  1461. to pray

  1462. for and

  1463. encourage the

  1464. officers,

  1465. the elders,

  1466. and the

  1467. deacons of

  1468. the church

  1469. in their

  1470. responsibilities

  1471. or in

  1472. their discharge

  1473. of their

  1474. duty.

  1475. Do you

  1476. see this

  1477. covenant,

  1478. this

  1479. member,

  1480. membership,

  1481. committing to

  1482. one another

  1483. to be

  1484. faithful and

  1485. loyal?

  1486. It's a

  1487. commitment to

  1488. be graceful.

  1489. So yes,

  1490. we bring our

  1491. expectations

  1492. down,

  1493. we are

  1494. messy and

  1495. broken,

  1496. but we

  1497. also raise

  1498. the

  1499. expectations

  1500. up to

  1501. be a

  1502. graceful

  1503. family.

  1504. The

  1505. church

  1506. family is

  1507. where sons

  1508. and daughters

  1509. come to

  1510. the Father

  1511. together to

  1512. receive his

  1513. grace.

  1514. And the

  1515. church family

  1516. is where

  1517. brothers and

  1518. sisters of

  1519. Jesus come

  1520. to give

  1521. grace.

  1522. And the

  1523. church family

  1524. is where we

  1525. depend on the

  1526. Spirit's help

  1527. to be

  1528. graceful to

  1529. one another

  1530. in our

  1531. words and

  1532. in our

  1533. deeds.

  1534. The

  1535. church family

  1536. is not

  1537. just an

  1538. idea,

  1539. a picture

  1540. in our

  1541. minds or

  1542. something in

  1543. the Bible

  1544. to be

  1545. read.

  1546. It is

  1547. something to

  1548. be lived

  1549. out and

  1550. worked out.

  1551. that's why

  1552. we've been

  1553. doing these

  1554. series together

  1555. and I want

  1556. to encourage

  1557. us all that

  1558. if you are

  1559. not yet a

  1560. member to

  1561. consider what

  1562. it is to

  1563. be a son

  1564. and daughter

  1565. of the

  1566. Father,

  1567. a brother

  1568. and sister

  1569. of Jesus,

  1570. a brother

  1571. and sister

  1572. of one

  1573. another.

  1574. the

  1575. church

  1576. is

  1577. family.

  1578. Let's

  1579. just take a

  1580. moment in

  1581. the quietness

  1582. before I

  1583. pray to

  1584. think about

  1585. what our

  1586. response is

  1587. to what

  1588. we've heard

  1589. this morning.

  1590. and

  1591. Thank you.

  1592. Let's pray.

1593. Our Father God, thank you.

1594. Thank you for sending your son Jesus to be our pioneer,

1595. to cut a way through, to bring many sons and daughters to glory.

1596. Thank you that as we follow Jesus, as we trust in him,

1597. we can talk to God as our Father.

1598. But not only that, you have adopted us into your family,

1599. giving us greater brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers and children.

1600. And we ask and pray that you would help us in our messiness and brokenness

1601. to be graceful to one another,

1602. that we would lead each other back to the cross

1603. to receive the mercy and the help that we so need

1604. to be the kind of people that you call us to be.

1605. I thank you, Father, for this church,

1606. for the gathering that is here today,

1607. for your faithfulness to us over so many years,

1608. for the people you have welcomed in,

1609. for the people who you have changed.

1610. And we pray and ask, Father God,

1611. that you would add to this family,

1612. that you would be pleased to see many others

1613. from the community of Carragoline

1614. come to know you and trust you,

1615. to know you as Father,

1616. Jesus as their elder brother,

1617. and to know one another

1618. as brothers and sisters in Christ.

1619. we ask all these things in Jesus' name.

  1620. Amen.

  1621. Before we sing,

  1622. there are some,

1623. are there some books, Ralph?

  1624. I'm looking for Ralph.

  1625. Are there books? No?

  1626. They'll be there Wednesday, won't they?

  1627. Yeah, sorry.

  1628. That's right.

1629. We've got some books for you Wednesday.

1630. I have a few other little booklets as well,

1631. which are all talking about the church.

1632. If you want to pick one of them up,

1633. it may help you to think about these things.

1634. Or talk to myself or Ralph or Jonathan or Alex afterwards.

1635. We'd love to do that.

  1636. Let's sing,

1637. what is our hope in life and death?

  1638. Christ alone.

1639. If you're a brother or sister in Christ today,

1640. you will want to sing this out,

1641. that Christ is our hope

  1642. in life and death.

1643. Let's stand together as we sing.

1644. And you're happy with you.

  1645. !

1646. What is our hope in life and death?

  1647. Christ alone, Christ alone.

1648. What is our only confidence?

1649. That our souls to Him belong.

1650. He holds our days within His hands.

1651. We come to fight from His command.

1652. The path will keep us to the end.

1653. The love of Christ in which we stand.

1654. Our hope will sing Alleluia.

  1655. Our hope's great, eternal.

  1656. Oh, sing Alleluia.

  1657. Now and everly confess.

1658. Christ our hope in life and death.

1659. God is good, God is good.

1660. Where is His grace that could be strong?

1661. In our great Redeemer's blood.

1662. We're pain when fears arise.

1663. Who stands above the stormy trials?

  1664. Who stands away?

1665. That bring us life unto the shore.

  1666. The rock of Christ.

  1667. Oh, sing Alleluia.

  1668. Our hope's great, eternal.

  1669. Oh, sing Alleluia.

  1670. Now and everly confess.

1671. Christ our hope in life and death.

1672. Christ our hope in life and death.

1673. And what reward will heaven bring.

  1674. Everly confess.

  1675. Everly confess.

  1676. Everly confess.

1677. And we will rise beneath the Lord.

1678. And sin and death will be destroyed.

1679. And we will be upon endless joy.

1680. When Christ our hope in life and death.

  1681. Now and everly confess.

  1682. Now and everly confess.

1683. Christ our hope in life and death.

1684. Our Father God, we thank you that we can say we have life in Christ today.

1685. And even when we die, we have life eternal.

1686. That we will gather together with your church, your family from throughout all times and all ages.

1687. We will gather together with our brothers and sisters.

1688. We will gather together with our brothers and sisters.

1689. And with our brother Jesus.

1690. United stronger by the Spirit's power.

1691. We look forward to that day.

1692. And we pray that you would help us as your family to encourage one another on day by day.

  1693. Day by day.

1694. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1695. Amen.

1696. If you want any of those little booklets I mentioned, just come to me afterwards and ask.

1697. And I've got a few so I can give you a few.
