  1. Chapter 4, 2 Corinthians chapter 4. Thank you, Ralph, for leading us this morning.

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. We've been working our way through this letter to the church in Corinth, written a long time

  4. ago, but written for the church in every age, to God's people.

  5. Well, we're going to pray, and then we're going to look at God's word together.

  6. Let's pray.

  7. Father God, you are the one who sees and knows all things.

  8. And you see us today, not just us sitting here, but you know our hearts.

  9. You know the things that are concerning us, the things that have happened to us.

  10. And we pray that as we hear your word, it would speak into our lives, and allowing us and helping

  11. us to see all our concerns from your perspective, and to see the work that you are doing in us.

  12. And so we pray that you will move by the power of your spirit, and work in us what is good today.

  13. In Jesus' name, amen.

  14. Amen.

  15. We're going to read chapter 4, verses 16 to 18.

  16. It's a short text this morning, but jam-packed with wonderful truth to encourage us.

  17. Chapter 4, verse 16.

  18. Therefore, we do not lose heart.

  19. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

  20. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

  21. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.

  22. Since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

  23. Some of you will be familiar with the name Joni or Joni Erickson Tada, a young girl who in her teens had an accident.

  24. And since that time, for the last 50 years of her waking life, she has remained in a wheelchair.

  25. She was paralyzed from the neck down and has suffered terribly in her life.

  26. Joni is a Christian, and she loves Jesus.

  27. In her book, which I recommend to you, it's called A Place of Healing, she writes about a friend of hers called Melinda.

  28. Let me read to you some of that story.

  29. Melinda is struggling with a severe, and I mean a heartbreakingly severe, case of diabetes.

  30. In the process, she has lost both her legs through amputation.

  31. She has lost her eyesight, and she has lost several fingers.

  32. Not long ago, she called to me to tell me that the doctors were about to remove another finger.

  33. My heart went out to her, as it always does.

  34. But my heart is also inspired by her struggle, and here's why.

  35. Melinda has not lost heart.

  36. The diabetes may be taking much away from her, but it can't take that away.

  37. The doctors can't amputate that.

  38. The woman is quite literally wasting away week by week, day by day.

  39. But she has not lost heart, because she places her trust and confidence in Christ.

  40. In chapter 4, we have seen how embracing the Christian life and ministry will mean weakness, suffering, and death.

  41. In fact, to be a Christian means we will face troubles and trials of all kinds.

  42. And when we go through those times, we can lose heart.

  43. We can want to give up.

  44. But we don't need to.

  45. We don't need to lose heart.

  46. Because chapter 4 is written to us for our encouragement.

  47. Look back at verse 1.

  48. Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, the ministry of declaring the good news about Jesus,

  49. we do not lose heart.

  50. And then down in verse 16.

  51. Therefore, we do not lose heart.

  52. So to help us this morning not to lose heart,

  53. we need to be able to see our struggles through God's perspective.

  54. To understand them as God would understand them.

  55. So we're going to look at these few verses together

  56. and see what God teaches us.

  57. How we can respond to our struggles.

  58. First, we do not lose heart because we have an unbreakable reality.

  59. We do not lose heart because we have an unbreakable reality.

  60. Verse 16.

  61. We do not lose heart.

  62. Though outwardly we are wasting away,

  63. yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

  64. That's our reality.

  65. Our outward self, this body, is wasting away.

  66. But our inward self is being renewed each day.

  67. I have some sobering news.

  68. I'm dying.

  69. And so are all of you.

  70. As we get older,

  71. our weakness becomes more apparent.

  72. Our energies decline.

  73. Our thought process slows.

  74. Our sufferings become more acute.

  75. Our aches linger and our pains increase.

  76. Our dying becomes more unavoidable.

  77. Our fight grows tired.

  78. Our bodies wear out.

  79. Psalm 90, that we were reading earlier,

  80. says this.

  81. Our days may come to 70 years or 80

  82. if our strength endures.

  83. Yet the best of them

  84. are but trouble and sorrow.

  85. Even the young people,

  86. you fit and healthy people out there,

  87. you're not immune to this trajectory.

  88. The writer to Ecclesiastes

  89. puts it like this.

  90. Remember your creator in the days of your youth.

  91. Don't forget God.

  92. Before the days of trouble come

  93. and the years approach

  94. when you will say,

  95. I find no pleasure in them.

  96. Now you might think

  97. I'm being a little bit morbid

  98. and a bit dour

  99. and it's not very cheerful this morning.

  100. But I'm just spelling out

  101. the reality of God's word.

  102. Weakness leads to suffering

  103. and suffering will lead to death.

  104. Outwardly,

  105. we are all at this very moment

  106. wasting away.

  107. But,

  108. in the midst of our aches and pains

  109. and our groans and cries,

  110. we are, verse 16,

  111. being renewed day by day.

  112. An unbreakable reality

  113. is taking place

  114. as we waste away.

  115. So what is this renewal?

  116. What's the transformation

  117. that's going on in our life?

  118. Well, we've already been given a hint of it.

  119. If we go back to chapter 3,

  120. verse 18.

  121. Chapter 3, verse 18.

  122. And we all,

  123. who with unveiled faces,

  124. contemplate the Lord's glory

  125. as we look at Christ,

  126. as we see Christ,

  127. we are being transformed

  128. into His image

  129. with ever-increasing glory

  130. which comes from the Lord

  131. who is the Spirit.

  132. Wonderful.

  133. The Spirit of God

  134. is at work

  135. in our inner being.

  136. We are,

  137. as God's people,

  138. at this very moment,

  139. being transformed

  140. to be like Christ

  141. with ever-increasing glory.

  142. And one day,

  143. this renewing,

  144. this transformational process

  145. is going to reach its goal.

  146. We will be like Christ.

  147. We will be like Him.

  148. We will see Him.

  149. And we won't sin anymore.

  150. And we won't struggle anymore.

  151. We are, verse 16,

  152. being renewed.

  153. It is happening.

  154. We are being transformed.

  155. It will happen.

  156. It's an unbreakable reality.

  157. And this is the trajectory

  158. that we are on.

  159. God is preparing us now

  160. for the age to come.

  161. As our external self

  162. decays and dies,

  163. so our inward self

  164. transforms and renews.

  165. It's like the butterfly effect.

  166. The caterpillar crawls

  167. underneath your window ledge.

  168. A chrysalis forms.

  169. And from it emerges

  170. a most beautiful butterfly.

  171. Well, as death takes place

  172. within us,

  173. so at the same time,

  174. life comes forth.

  175. And one day,

  176. one day,

  177. yes, it is true,

  178. we will be like Christ.

  179. This is our unbreakable reality.

  180. Outwardly,

  181. wasting away,

  182. yet inwardly,

  183. being renewed

  184. day by day.

  185. Therefore,

  186. we do not

  187. lose heart.

  188. So we have an unbreakable

  189. reality.

  190. certainty.

  191. We have,

  192. there we go,

  193. an unshakable

  194. certainty.

  195. We do not lose heart

  196. because we have

  197. an unshakable certainty.

  198. Verse 17.

  199. For,

  200. the reason for this renewal,

  201. the reason for this transformation

  202. that's going on in our life

  203. is because,

  204. verse 17,

  205. our light

  206. and momentary troubles

  207. are achieving for us

  208. an eternal glory

  209. that far

  210. outweighs them all.

  211. You see,

  212. when we face our troubles,

  213. whatever they are,

  214. we begin to doubt

  215. and wonder.

  216. Am I going to make it

  217. to glory?

  218. What if my suffering

  219. overwhelms me

  220. and crushes me?

  221. What if I do

  222. lose heart?

  223. But look closely

  224. to what it says,

  225. verse 17.

  226. Our troubles

  227. are

  228. achieving for us

  229. an eternal glory.

  230. Our troubles

  231. are causing us,

  232. they are preparing us

  233. for our eternal destiny.

  234. They are achieving

  235. for us

  236. our eternal glory.

  237. wonderfully,

  238. God in his sovereignty

  239. and wisdom

  240. gathers up

  241. all of our sufferings

  242. and all of our tears

  243. and he uses

  244. all of them

  245. to get us

  246. to glory.

  247. It's the Romans 8,

    Romans 8:28

  248. verse 28,

  249. principle.

  250. And we know

  251. that in all things,

  252. in every circumstance

  253. and every detail

  254. of our life,

  255. God works

  256. for the good

  257. of those

  258. who love him,

  259. who have been

  260. called according

  261. to his purpose.

  262. And what is

  263. God's purpose?

  264. But to make us

  265. more like Christ

  266. and to bring us

  267. to glory.

  268. He will do it.

  269. You see,

  270. with God,

  271. your troubles

  272. don't keep you

  273. from glory.

  274. They get you

  275. to glory.

  276. This is our

  277. unshakable

  278. certainty.

  279. And with that in mind,

  280. we begin to see

  281. our troubles

  282. from God's

  283. perspective.

  284. Yes,

  285. we're weak.

  286. Yes,

  287. we suffer.

  288. Yes,

  289. we're dying

  290. and wasting away.

  291. And for most,

  292. that process

  293. is difficult

  294. and hard.

  295. It's a daily

  296. agony for some

  297. people.

  298. It's like a

  299. torture.

  300. Cancer

  301. isn't nice.

  302. Dementia

  303. isn't pleasant.

  304. Losing your

  305. hearing or your

  306. eyesight or your

  307. mobility is at

  308. times unbearable.

  309. They are not,

  310. as the

  311. Apostle Paul

  312. seems to suggest

  313. in verse 17,

  314. light and

  315. momentary.

  316. How can you

  317. call my

  318. painful disease

  319. or my

  320. crushing

  321. disability

  322. light

  323. and

  324. momentary?

  325. It's hard.

  326. Seems that

  327. the Apostle

  328. Paul didn't

  329. get to go

  330. to his

  331. pastoral

  332. caring course,

  333. did he?

  334. But he does

  335. have a message

  336. for us

  337. because he

  338. does understand.

  339. He's telling

  340. us that we're

  341. to compare

  342. our troubles

  343. with the

  344. glory to

  345. come.

  346. Verse 17,

  347. our light

  348. and momentary

  349. troubles

  350. are achieving

  351. for us,

  352. in contrast,

  353. an eternal

  354. glory that

  355. far outweighs

  356. them all.

  357. on your

  358. phones,

  359. I'm sure

  360. you've got

  361. a stopwatch.

  362. Every time

  363. you have a

  364. trouble,

  365. click

  366. start.

  367. And when

  368. it ends,

  369. click

  370. stop.

  371. Do that

  372. with every

  373. trouble

  374. and with

  375. every hurt

  376. and with

  377. every pain

  378. that you

  379. may endure

  380. through life.

  381. And imagine

  382. that you add

  383. them all up,

  384. all those

  385. troubles,

  386. all those

  387. hardships.

  388. Let's just

  389. say for the

  390. sake of

  391. illustration,

  392. it comes to

  393. 45 years,

  394. 20 days,

  395. and 13

  396. minutes.

  397. That's a lot,

  398. isn't it?

  399. Now get

  400. your stopwatch

  401. and press

  402. start when

  403. glory begins.

  404. And press

  405. it when

  406. it stops.

  407. That's the

  408. point.

  409. That's the

  410. point.

  411. Glory

  412. doesn't

  413. end.

  414. It never

  415. finishes.

  416. It never

  417. stops.

  418. It goes

  419. on decade

  420. after decade,

  421. century

  422. after century,

  423. millennia

  424. after

  425. millennia.

  426. Now

  427. compare your

  428. troubles in

  429. this age

  430. to the

  431. glory to

  432. come.

  433. They are

  434. momentary.

  435. glory.

  436. Your

  437. life's

  438. suffering is

  439. like a

  440. blink of

  441. an eye,

  442. a nanosecond

  443. compared to

  444. the eternal

  445. glory that

  446. is to come.

  447. or think of

  448. it like

  449. this.

  450. Get your

  451. old-fashioned

  452. weighing scales

  453. out.

  454. You know,

  455. the balancing

  456. ones.

  457. Collect all

  458. your troubles,

  459. all your

  460. hardships,

  461. and place

  462. them on the

  463. left-hand

  464. side.

  465. And again,

  466. for illustration

  467. purpose,

  468. let's just say

  469. they all add

  470. up to

  471. 120 kilograms.

  472. That's a

  473. heavy weight.

  474. Not many

  475. people here

  476. could even

  477. push it

  478. or lift it,

  479. certainly not

  480. carry it.

  481. Now get

  482. all the

  483. glory that

  484. is stored

  485. up for you

  486. and place

  487. it on the

  488. other side

  489. of the

  490. scales.

  491. Compare

  492. the weight

  493. of your

  494. troubles

  495. with the

  496. weight

  497. of glory.

  498. It's like

  499. putting a

  500. piece of

  501. dust on

  502. one side

  503. and a

  504. cruiser

  505. ship

  506. on the

  507. other

  508. side.

  509. Our

  510. troubles

  511. are a

  512. feather

  513. compared

  514. to the

  515. tonnage

  516. of glory.

  517. That's

  518. why Paul

  519. can say

  520. back in

  521. verse 8,

  522. we are

  523. hard-pressed

  524. on every

  525. side.

  526. but not

  527. crushed,

  528. perplexed,

  529. but not

  530. in despair,

  531. persecuted,

  532. but not

  533. abandoned,

  534. struck down,

  535. but not

  536. destroyed.

  537. The

  538. weight

  539. of glory

  540. means we

  541. are on

  542. the side

  543. of victory.

  544. This

  545. is our

  546. unshakable

  547. certainty,

  548. our light

  549. and momentary

  550. troubles

  551. are achieving

  552. us an

  553. eternal

  554. glory

  555. that far

  556. outweighs

  557. them all.

  558. Therefore,

  559. let none

  560. of us

  561. lose heart.

  562. third,

  563. we have

  564. an unchangeable

  565. priority.

  566. An

  567. unchangeable

  568. priority.

  569. Verse

  570. 18,

  571. so,

  572. and here's

  573. our priority,

  574. this is what we

  575. are to give

  576. our time

  577. to,

  578. in the light

  579. of our

  580. troubles,

  581. we fix

  582. our eyes

  583. not on

  584. what is

  585. seen,

  586. but on

  587. what is

  588. unseen,

  589. since what

  590. is seen

  591. is temporary,

  592. and what

  593. is unseen

  594. is eternal.

  595. The

  596. seen

  597. are the

  598. material

  599. and the

  600. tangible

  601. things of

  602. life.

  603. Things like

  604. our work,

  605. our hobbies,

  606. our possession,

  607. our money,

  608. our homes,

  609. all the

  610. things that

  611. we look

  612. to for

  613. our comfort

  614. and our

  615. happiness.

  616. But the

  617. reality is

  618. all that

  619. we can

  620. see,

  621. all the

  622. things that

  623. we hold

  624. dear,

  625. they are

  626. all

  627. temporary.

  628. Even the

  629. things we

  630. most love,

  631. and even the

  632. people that

  633. we most

  634. treasure,

  635. are all

  636. transient.

  637. Everything

  638. we touch,

  639. everything

  640. that we

  641. can grasp

  642. and hold,

  643. perishes,

  644. spoils,

  645. and fades.

  646. As the

  647. writer James

  648. put it

  649. like this,

  650. what is

  651. your life?

  652. You are

  653. a mist

  654. that appears

  655. for a little

  656. while,

  657. and then

  658. vanishes.

  659. Just a

  660. vapor.

  661. We cannot

  662. hold it.

  663. The things

  664. of this age

  665. and the

  666. world that

  667. is around

  668. us do

  669. not last,

  670. therefore,

  671. there is

  672. nothing in

  673. this universe,

  674. in this

  675. world,

  676. that can

  677. satisfy us.

  678. Nothing is

  679. strong enough

  680. to overcome

  681. our sorrows.

  682. Our longing

  683. for contentment,

  684. our desire

  685. for happiness

  686. is never

  687. fully

  688. realized.

  689. What is

  690. seen,

  691. what we

  692. have,

  693. what we

  694. hold and

  695. touch,

  696. it's all

  697. temporary,

  698. temporary,

  699. But the

  700. unseen

  701. is what

  702. is eternal,

  703. it is what

  704. is yet to

  705. come,

  706. it's where

  707. life does

  708. not perish,

  709. things don't

  710. spoil,

  711. things don't

  712. fade,

  713. it lasts

  714. forever,

  715. it's a place

  716. where nothing

  717. breaks,

  718. nothing ends,

  719. nothing dies,

  720. it is nothing

  721. less than the

  722. new heavens

  723. and the

  724. new earth,

  725. the new

  726. creation,

  727. it is

  728. eternal

  729. joy.

  730. And the

  731. very fact

  732. that it is

  733. unseen

  734. means that

  735. it is yet

  736. to come.

  737. Chapter

  738. 5,

  739. verse 7

  740. tells us

  741. we are to

  742. live by

  743. faith

  744. and not

  745. by

  746. sight.

  747. We long

  748. for something

  749. better and

  750. greater than

  751. this mere

  752. world around

  753. us.

  754. Our hope

  755. is in what

  756. is promised.

  757. The

  758. Apostle Paul

  759. put it like

  760. this,

  761. hope that

  762. is seen

  763. is no

  764. hope at

  765. all.

  766. Who

  767. hopes for

  768. what they

  769. already have?

  770. But if we

  771. hope for

  772. what we do

  773. not yet

  774. have,

  775. we wait

  776. for it

  777. patiently.

  778. Our

  779. glorious

  780. joy to

  781. come is

  782. eternal,

  783. so we

  784. fix our

  785. eyes not

  786. on what

  787. is seen,

  788. but on

  789. what is

  790. unseen.

  791. That is

  792. to be our

  793. unchanging

  794. priority each

  795. and every

  796. day.

  797. Fix our

  798. eyes on

  799. what is

  800. unseen.

  801. So how

  802. do we do

  803. that?

  804. How do

  805. we fix

  806. our eyes

  807. on what

  808. is unseen?

  809. Well,

  810. two things

  811. to apply

  812. to us.

  813. I don't

  814. have it

  815. there, so

  816. here's the

  817. first one.

  818. Loosen

  819. your grip.

  820. How do we

  821. fix our

  822. eyes on

  823. what is

  824. unseen?

  825. Loosen

  826. your grip.

  827. God's

  828. love.

  829. Because it

  830. was never

  831. God's

  832. design that

  833. this world

  834. should be

  835. our home.

  836. In fact,

  837. all that we

  838. love and

  839. enjoy here

  840. right now

  841. in this

  842. age are

  843. shadows

  844. of the

  845. reality.

  846. One writer

  847. put it like

  848. this, one of

  849. my favourite

  850. quotes.

  851. things that

  852. is

  853. to go to

  854. heaven

  855. fully to

  856. enjoy God

  857. is infinitely

  858. better than

  859. the most

  860. pleasant of

  861. gifts here.

  862. fathers and

  863. mothers,

  864. husbands and

  865. wives,

  866. children and

  867. friends are

  868. all but

  869. shadows.

  870. But the

  871. enjoyment of

  872. God is

  873. the substance.

  874. These, the

  875. gifts around

  876. us, are but

  877. scattered beams,

  878. but God is

  879. the sun.

  880. These are

  881. streams, but

  882. God is the

  883. fountain.

  884. These are

  885. but drops,

  886. but God is

  887. the ocean.

  888. You see, we

  889. so often live

  890. as if this

  891. earth were

  892. our permanent

  893. home.

  894. We grip so

  895. tightly the

  896. things that we

  897. love that we

  898. cannot see

  899. anything else.

  900. And when

  901. suffering comes,

  902. we lose all

  903. hope.

  904. But all

  905. that we have

  906. are shadows

  907. pointing us

  908. to the

  909. reality to

  910. come.

  911. Our hobbies,

  912. our work,

  913. they're the

  914. streams, but

  915. God is the

  916. fountain of

  917. joy.

  918. Our friends

  919. and our

  920. health, well,

  921. they're just

  922. drops.

  923. God is the

  924. ocean filled

  925. with love.

  926. Loosen your

  927. grip on

  928. this life

  929. love.

  930. And look to

  931. Christ who

  932. is unseen.

  933. Adjust your

  934. gaze is the

  935. second thing

  936. we do.

  937. Look to

  938. Christ because

  939. without Christ,

  940. without him,

  941. there would be

  942. no glory.

  943. You see, it's

  944. the presence of

  945. Christ that

  946. makes glory to

  947. come and

  948. eternal joy.

  949. In other

  950. words, if you

  951. could go to

  952. heaven right

  953. now, and if

  954. Christ were

  955. not there, it

  956. would be

  957. joyless.

  958. It would be

  959. empty.

  960. Christ is the

  961. one who makes

  962. glory happen.

  963. He has defeated

  964. your sin on the

  965. cross.

  966. He has

  967. destroyed the

  968. death and

  969. grave.

  970. He alone

  971. satisfies us

  972. and fulfills

  973. us.

  974. As Psalm

  975. 16 says,

  976. you fill me

  977. with joy in

  978. your presence

  979. and with

  980. eternal pleasures

  981. at your right

  982. hand.

  983. So let us

  984. together loosen

  985. our grip.

  986. Let us

  987. adjust our

  988. gaze.

  989. Repent of

  990. making the

  991. gifts greater

  992. than the

  993. giver.

  994. Turn from

  995. seeking joy in

  996. the things that

  997. do not last

  998. and look in

  999. faith, walk

  1000. by faith, trust

  1001. in the one who

  1002. gives life in

  1003. all its

  1004. fullness now

  1005. and forever

  1006. more.

  1007. We are to

  1008. be like the

  1009. old Christian

  1010. who said

  1011. this,

  1012. when Christ

  1013. calls me

  1014. home, I

  1015. shall go with

  1016. the gladness

  1017. of a boy

  1018. bounding away

  1019. from school.

  1020. Are you

  1021. waiting for

  1022. glory?

  1023. I can't

  1024. wait.

  1025. Let's

  1026. pray.

  1027. Father,

  1028. thank you

  1029. for your

  1030. word

  1031. that speaks

  1032. truth and

  1033. reality

  1034. into our

  1035. troubles

  1036. and into

  1037. our trials.

  1038. You are

  1039. so good.

  1040. Would you

  1041. please help

  1042. us by your

  1043. spirit

  1044. to loosen

  1045. our grip

  1046. on the

  1047. things that

  1048. we see

  1049. and that

  1050. we may

  1051. adjust our

  1052. gaze

  1053. and look

  1054. at what

  1055. is unseen

  1056. and what

  1057. is yet to

  1058. come.

  1059. May our

  1060. eyes be

  1061. fixed on

  1062. Christ,

  1063. the one

  1064. who makes

  1065. glory possible,

  1066. the one

  1067. who is

  1068. our glorious

  1069. joy.

  1070. Thank you

  1071. that as we

  1072. trust you,

  1073. you keep

  1074. us and

  1075. you will

  1076. bring and

  1077. use all

  1078. that we

  1079. face to

  1080. ensure we

  1081. reach glory,

  1082. a glory

  1083. that far

  1084. outweighs

  1085. anything in

  1086. this world.

  1087. Thank you,

  1088. Jesus.

  1089. Amen.

  1090. We're going

  1091. to sing

  1092. together.

  1093. God moves

  1094. in a

  1095. mysterious

  1096. way,

  1097. his wonders

  1098. to perform,

  1099. his plants,

  1100. his footsteps

  1101. in the sea

  1102. and rides

  1103. upon the

  1104. storm.

  1105. I invite you

  1106. to sing

  1107. as we

  1108. entrust

  1109. our lives

  1110. afresh to

  1111. the one

  1112. who has

  1113. our life

  1114. in his

  1115. hands.

  1116. Let's sing,

  1117. let's sing

  1118. to encourage

  1119. one another

  1120. that we

  1121. may not
