  1. Good morning, everyone. Please open your Bibles to Isaiah 42.

  2. !

  3. Isaiah 42.

  4. We're taking a little break from our studies in 2 Corinthians.

  5. We're going to go back to that in the new year, so we can look forward to that.

  6. But over these next few weeks, we're going to be looking specifically at chapter 42 of Isaiah.

  7. On your Bibles, it may have a heading, The Servant of the Lord.

  8. They're traditional readings leading up to Christmas to help us to prepare for Christmas and the coming of Christ.

  9. So we're going to be looking at Isaiah 42 over three Sundays.

  10. This morning, we're going to look at the first nine verses as we prepare ourselves for Christmas as it approaches.

  11. So let's read, and then we're going to pray, and then we'll look at God's Word together.

  12. Isaiah 42, verse 1.

    Isaiah 42:1

  13. Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight.

  14. I will put my spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.

  15. He will not shout or cry out or raise his voice in the streets.

  16. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not snuff out.

  17. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice.

  18. He will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth.

  19. In his teaching, the islands will put their hope.

  20. This is what God, the Lord says, the creator of the heavens, who stretches them out,

  21. who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it,

  22. who gives breath to its people and life to all those who walk on it.

  23. I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness.

  24. I will take hold of your hand.

  25. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people

  26. and a light for the Gentiles,

  27. to open eyes that are blind,

  28. to free captives from prison,

  29. and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

  30. I am the Lord.

  31. Lord, that is my name.

  32. I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.

  33. See, the former things have taken place,

  34. and new things I declare.

  35. Before they spring into being,

  36. I announce them to you.

  37. Well, let's pray together.

  38. Our Father God, we come to you as the creator God,

  39. the maker of heaven and earth,

  40. the God who gives us breath and gives us life.

  41. And so we come humbly before you,

  42. asking that you will speak to us through your word,

  43. and you would help us to see your servant in all his glory,

  44. and that as we gaze in wonder,

  45. we may be transformed more into his likeness.

  46. We pray this for our good,

  47. and for the glory of God.

  48. In Jesus' name.

  49. Amen.

  50. Amen.

  51. We interrupt this program with some breaking news.

  52. Today, world leaders met and have agreed a peace plan

  53. that will mean the end of all wars forever.

  54. Each country will be provided with financial security

  55. and political equality.

  56. Freedom will be enjoyed by all.

  57. Fear will be confined to the past.

  58. Would you believe it?

  59. It sounds great.

  60. We would love it to be true.

  61. But could it actually happen?

  62. Well, 800 years before the birth of Jesus,

  63. there was some earth-shattering, world-breaking news.

  64. God, through the prophet Isaiah,

  65. made an announcement.

  66. Verse 1.

  67. Here is my servant.

  68. And look at the end of verse 1.

  69. And he will bring justice to the nations.

  70. Wow.

  71. Is it really true?

  72. Who is this promised servant?

  73. Well, we're going to look at three things from this text.

  74. The servant's call,

  75. the servant's mission,

  76. and the servant's identity.

  77. Call, mission, and identity.

  78. So first of all, the servant's call.

  79. Look at verse 1.

  80. Look, listen.

  81. Here is my servant.

  82. And two things will mark out this servant from everyone else.

  83. First, this servant has been sent from God.

  84. Look at verse 1.

  85. Here is my servant who I uphold,

  86. my chosen one.

  87. This is no ordinary person.

  88. This is God's appointed servant.

  89. Verse 5.

  90. This is what the Lord says.

  91. The creator of the heavens,

  92. who stretches them out,

  93. who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it,

  94. who gives breath to its people,

  95. and life to those who walk on it.

  96. I, the Lord,

  97. have called you.

  98. God, who created the world,

  99. who rules the universe,

  100. who sustains each person,

  101. has chosen

  102. and called forth his servant.

  103. But more than that,

  104. this servant

  105. has been empowered

  106. by God.

  107. Did you see that at the end of verse 1?

  108. I will put my spirit

  109. on him.

  110. At the creation of the world

  111. in Genesis 1, verse 3,

    Genesis 1:3

  112. we read that the spirit

  113. was hovering over the waters.

  114. He was there with creation power.

  115. Well, it's that same creation power

  116. that is now given

  117. to his servant.

  118. That is immense power.

  119. The power to speak things

  120. into existence.

  121. So God has sent

  122. and empowered his servant.

  123. Why?

  124. Look at the end of verse 1.

  125. To bring justice

  126. to the nations.

  127. You see,

  128. if I can turn the page,

  129. I'll tell you.

  130. this is a servant

  131. for the peoples

  132. of the world.

  133. This is world-breaking news

  134. for all the nations.

  135. This is God's chosen one,

  136. my servant

  137. in whom I delight,

  138. my chosen one

  139. whom I uphold.

  140. He is my treasured one,

  141. my loved one.

  142. Can you see the glory

  143. behind this world-breaking news?

  144. God is giving of his best.

  145. He is giving of all

  146. that he has.

  147. We can say

  148. he is giving of himself.

  149. Giving his servant

  150. to a world

  151. that is broken.

  152. To a people

  153. who have persistently

  154. squeezed

  155. and pushed God out.

  156. God announces

  157. to the world,

  158. here is my servant.

  159. He intervenes

  160. with kindness

  161. and mercy.

  162. So that's

  163. the servant's call.

  164. But what will

  165. this servant

  166. do?

  167. Second,

  168. what is the servant's

  169. mission?

  170. Well,

  171. there's two parts

  172. to his mission.

  173. First,

  174. he will bring

  175. justice

  176. with gentleness.

  177. Look at the end

  178. of verse 1 again.

  179. He will bring

  180. justice

  181. to the nations.

  182. Middle of verse 3,

  183. in faithfulness,

  184. he will bring

  185. forth

  186. justice.

  187. He will not

  188. falter

  189. or be discouraged

  190. till he establishes

  191. justice

  192. on earth.

  193. death.

  194. The recent

  195. petrol bombing

  196. of a house

  197. in Offaly

  198. that we all

  199. saw about

  200. on the news

  201. was brutal

  202. and sad.

  203. Four-year-old

  204. Tighe and his

  205. Aunt Mary

  206. killed.

  207. The family

  208. cries

  209. for justice.

  210. And of course,

  211. that cry

  212. for justice

  213. goes out

  214. around the world

  215. every day

  216. in a million

  217. of ways.

  218. the people

  219. of Palestine

  220. and Ukraine.

  221. And we feel

  222. it in our own

  223. hearts as

  224. wrong and hurts

  225. have been done

  226. to us.

  227. We long

  228. for justice.

  229. You see,

  230. justice implies

  231. two things.

  232. It's the punishment

  233. of wrongs,

  234. but it's also

  235. the restoring

  236. of rights.

  237. It's literally

  238. restoring order

  239. where there is

  240. disorder.

  241. it's putting

  242. things back

  243. to the way

  244. God intends

  245. things to be.

  246. It's a world

  247. where there is

  248. no longer

  249. any need

  250. for justice

  251. because

  252. everything

  253. is put

  254. right.

  255. God's

  256. chosen

  257. servant

  258. will bring

  259. justice.

  260. He will be

  261. faithful

  262. and not

  263. fail.

  264. He will

  265. not rest,

  266. verse 4,

  267. until he

  268. establishes

  269. justice

  270. on earth.

  271. Every evil

  272. act,

  273. every unkind

  274. word,

  275. every jealous

  276. thought

  277. will be

  278. punished

  279. and every

  280. wrong will

  281. be righted

  282. and every

  283. loss

  284. will be

  285. restored.

  286. But look

  287. how this

  288. justice

  289. will come.

  290. The servant

  291. will bring

  292. justice

  293. with

  294. gentleness.

  295. Look at

  296. verse 2.

  297. He will

  298. not shout

  299. or cry

  300. out

  301. or raise

  302. his voice

  303. in the

  304. streets.

  305. Well compare

  306. that to the

  307. noisy voices

  308. of the world

  309. leaders today.

  310. Those with

  311. power

  312. shout

  313. people down

  314. and silence

  315. the voice

  316. of the needy.

  317. They look

  318. to dominate

  319. and promote

  320. their own

  321. agenda.

  322. But here

  323. we have

  324. a servant

  325. who is

  326. different.

  327. Verse 3.

  328. A bruised

  329. reed

  330. he will

  331. not break

  332. and a

  333. smouldering

  334. wick

  335. he will

  336. not snuff

  337. out.

  338. A rotting

  339. reed

  340. by a river

  341. is so easily

  342. snapped,

  343. isn't it?

  344. Just by the

  345. squeeze of a

  346. hand that is

  347. broken in two

  348. and thrown

  349. away because

  350. it's of no

  351. use.

  352. The same

  353. is true of

  354. a smouldering

  355. flickering

  356. candle with

  357. the slightest

  358. puff of air.

  359. It is

  360. extinguished

  361. and discarded.

  362. It's got

  363. no

  364. purpose.

  365. Now isn't

  366. that how we

  367. often feel

  368. in this

  369. broken

  370. and disordered

  371. world?

  372. Life's

  373. experiences

  374. have battered

  375. us so

  376. much we

  377. feel like

  378. that

  379. rotting

  380. reed

  381. with no

  382. strength to

  383. stand.

  384. Don't you

  385. feel like a

  386. flickering

  387. candle

  388. barely

  389. staying

  390. alight?

  391. Crushed

  392. and weak

  393. and broken?

  394. Fearing that

  395. the next

  396. disappointment

  397. or trial

  398. will finish

  399. us off

  400. for good?

  401. Well here

  402. we have

  403. a gentle

  404. servant

  405. who comes

  406. with the

  407. strength

  408. and the

  409. power

  410. of God

  411. himself.

  412. He comes

  413. to strengthen

  414. the weak

  415. and fan

  416. into the

  417. flame

  418. those with

  419. smouldering

  420. lives.

  421. God's

  422. chosen

  423. servant

  424. comes with

  425. awesome

  426. power

  427. power

  428. but he

  429. comes with

  430. gentleness

  431. not to

  432. trample on

  433. people.

  434. He uses

  435. his power

  436. to restore

  437. and renew

  438. those who

  439. are broken

  440. and crushed.

  441. This is

  442. the servant's

  443. mission.

  444. He brings

  445. justice

  446. with

  447. gentleness.

  448. grace

  449. but there's

  450. a second

  451. part to

  452. his

  453. mission.

  454. He will

  455. give

  456. grace

  457. for the

  458. hopeless.

  459. Let's

  460. pick it

  461. up in

  462. the middle

  463. of verse

  464. 6.

  465. God

  466. speaking

  467. to his

  468. servant

  469. says I

  470. will keep

  471. you

  472. and will

  473. make you

  474. to be a

  475. covenant

  476. for the

  477. people.

  478. Now to

  479. make a

  480. covenant

  481. is to

  482. commit

  483. to a

  484. relationship

  485. where two

  486. people or

  487. two parties

  488. make promises

  489. to one

  490. another.

  491. Just like

  492. a wedding

  493. the soon

  494. to be

  495. husband and

  496. wife make

  497. a promise

  498. to commit

  499. to each

  500. other.

  501. Or like

  502. the members

  503. of a

  504. church

  505. members

  506. promise

  507. to commit

  508. to each

  509. other.

  510. That's what

  511. it means

  512. to make

  513. a covenant.

  514. Now God

  515. had entered

  516. into covenant

  517. with his

  518. people.

  519. All through

  520. the Old

  521. Testament

  522. there was

  523. this promise

  524. I will

  525. be your

  526. God

  527. and you

  528. will be

  529. my people.

  530. But the

  531. problem was

  532. the people

  533. kept breaking

  534. their promise

  535. and if you

  536. were to

  537. read Isaiah

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  538. chapters 1

  539. to 39

  540. you would

  541. see that

  542. all the

  543. way through.

  544. So when

  545. God

  546. confronts

  547. them

  548. he says

  549. this

  550. Isaiah

    Isaiah 24:5

  551. 24

  552. verse 5

  553. the earth

  554. is defiled

  555. by its

  556. people

  557. they have

  558. disobeyed

  559. the laws

  560. violated

  561. the statutes

  562. and have

  563. broken

  564. the

  565. everlasting

  566. covenant.

  567. You see

  568. just like

  569. people of

  570. old

  571. we can

  572. never keep

  573. our promise

  574. to love

  575. God

  576. with all

  577. our heart.

  578. we always

  579. wander

  580. and so

  581. we need

  582. somebody

  583. who will

  584. come alongside

  585. us

  586. and who

  587. will actually

  588. stand in

  589. for us

  590. to represent

  591. us

  592. and that's

  593. what this

  594. servant

  595. will do.

  596. In grace

  597. he will

  598. make the

  599. promises

  600. on our

  601. behalf

  602. so that

  603. the covenant

  604. is never

  605. broken.

  606. Now the

  607. question is

  608. who will

  609. the servant

  610. do this

  611. for?

  612. Well he

  613. will do

  614. it for

  615. the hopeless

  616. and the

  617. helpless.

  618. Let's read

  619. again from

  620. the middle

  621. of verse

  622. 6.

  623. God

  624. speaks to

  625. his servant

  626. I will

  627. keep you

  628. and will

  629. make you

  630. to be a

  631. covenant

  632. for the

  633. people

  634. and a

  635. light

  636. for the

  637. Gentiles.

  638. Well the

  639. Gentiles were

  640. the nations

  641. of the

  642. world

  643. all people

  644. groups

  645. and all

  646. languages

  647. to open

  648. eyes that

  649. are blind

  650. to free

  651. captives

  652. from prison

  653. and to

  654. release

  655. from the

  656. dungeon

  657. those who

  658. sit in

  659. darkness.

  660. What do

  661. the blind

  662. the captive

  663. slave

  664. and the

  665. person in

  666. the dungeon

  667. all have

  668. in common?

  669. Well they

  670. all need

  671. help.

  672. They can't

  673. change their

  674. situation.

  675. Their

  676. situation is

  677. hopeless

  678. helpless

  679. and they

  680. are helpless.

  681. You see

  682. verse 7

  683. is a

  684. picture

  685. of all

  686. of us.

  687. We are

  688. all blind

  689. to our

  690. need.

  691. We are

  692. all

  693. captives

  694. to self

  695. and to

  696. sin.

  697. It is

  698. like we

  699. are living

  700. in a

  701. dark

  702. dungeon.

  703. We need

  704. someone to

  705. come and

  706. open our

  707. eyes to

  708. set us

  709. free and

  710. release us

  711. to be the

  712. people that

  713. God has

  714. called us

  715. to be.

  716. And that is

  717. what the

  718. servant has

  719. come to

  720. do.

  721. Just

  722. flick on a

  723. couple of

  727. and verse

  728. 8.

  729. Here God

  730. is again

  731. speaking to

  732. his servant.

  733. We pick

  734. it up at

  735. the end

  736. of verse

  737. 8.

  738. I will

  739. keep you

  740. and will

  741. make you

  742. to be a

  743. covenant

  744. for the

  745. people,

  746. to restore

  747. the land,

  748. to reassign

  749. its desolate

  750. inheritance,

  751. to put

  752. everything

  753. right again,

  754. to restore

  755. order,

  756. to say to

  757. the captives,

  758. come out

  759. and to

  760. those who

  761. are in

  762. darkness,

  763. be free.

  764. Let's go

  765. back to

  766. chapter 42.

  767. you see,

  768. this is

  769. good news

  770. for the

  771. nations.

  772. You see,

  773. we live in

  774. a world

  775. where everything

  776. is based

  777. on the

  778. strong,

  779. the clever,

  780. the wealthy.

  781. We're always

  782. measured by

  783. our performance.

  784. We're always

  785. trying to hit

  786. our own

  787. standards and

  788. everybody else's

  789. standards.

  790. But what if we

  791. are so broken

  792. and so

  793. messed up

  794. that we

  795. can't reach

  796. those standards?

  797. what if we

  798. can't perform

  799. to where

  800. God calls

  801. us to be?

  802. Well,

  803. here we

  804. have a

  805. gracious

  806. God

  807. who comes

  808. to us

  809. in the

  810. person of

  811. the servant

  812. to those

  813. who are

  814. hopeless

  815. and helpless,

  816. a servant

  817. who will

  818. say to

  819. you,

  820. I will

  821. stand in

  822. for you.

  823. I will

  824. take the

  825. blame for

  826. all of

  827. your broken

  828. promises

  829. promises,

  830. and you

  831. can enjoy

  832. a life

  833. of unbroken

  834. promises.

  835. Here is

  836. the servant's

  837. mission,

  838. who brings

  839. justice with

  840. gentleness

  841. and brings

  842. grace to

  843. the hopeless.

  844. So we

  845. have the

  846. servant's

  847. call,

  848. the servant's

  849. mission,

  850. identity,

  851. and the

  852. servant's

  853. identity.

  854. So who

  855. is this

  856. servant?

  857. Well,

  858. I think we

  859. all know

  860. who he

  861. is,

  862. and I

  863. sure would

  864. very much

  865. like to

  866. meet him.

  867. But let's

  868. take ourselves

  869. through Scripture

  870. and see who

  871. this servant

  872. is.

  873. We're given

  874. a hint in

  875. verse 9.

  876. See,

  877. the former

  878. things have

  879. taken place,

  880. and new

  881. things I

  882. declare,

  883. before they

  884. spring into

  885. being,

  886. I announce

  887. them to

  888. you.

  889. God is

  890. saying through

  891. Isaiah,

  892. I am

  893. announcing

  894. what is

  895. going to

  896. happen

  897. before it

  898. happens.

  899. I'm telling

  900. you about

  901. my servant

  902. before the

  903. servant comes.

  904. and what

  905. God promised

  906. all those

  907. years ago

  908. has now

  909. been revealed.

  910. Look with

  911. me,

  912. please,

  913. to Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  914. chapter 3.

  915. Matthew's

  916. gospel,

  917. chapter 3.

  918. Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  919. chapter 3,

  920. starting in

  921. at verse

  922. 16.

  923. this is

  924. the

  925. baptism

  926. of

  927. Jesus.

  928. And just

  929. look at

  930. the language

  931. that is

  932. used.

  933. Chapter 3,

  934. verse 16.

  935. As soon

  936. as Jesus

  937. was

  938. baptized,

  939. he went

  940. up out

  941. of the

  942. water,

  943. and at

  944. that moment

  945. heaven was

  946. opened,

  947. and he

  948. saw the

  949. Spirit of

  950. God

  951. descending

  952. like a

  953. dove,

  954. love,

  955. and a

  956. light

  957. on him.

  958. And a

  959. voice from

  960. heaven said,

  961. this is

  962. my son

  963. whom I

  964. love.

  965. With

  966. him

  967. I am

  968. well

  969. pleased.

  970. he

  971. Isaiah 42, the Spirit of God comes on Jesus with power and the Father echoes what Isaiah had said

  972. and identifies Jesus as the servant. Look, this is my servant. This is my son whom I love, whom I

  973. uphold. With him I am well pleased. I delight in him. In fact, as Jesus begins his ministry,

  974. it becomes abundantly clear. Look at Matthew chapter 12. Matthew chapter 12.

Matthew 12 chapter mention Matthew 12 chapter mention

  975. And verse 15. As Jesus went about his ministry, let's pick it up in the middle of verse 15.

  976. A large crowd followed him and he healed all who were ill. Is not the promise of renewal

  977. and restoration and putting right everything that is broken? Verse 16. He warned them not to tell

  978. others about him. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah. Here is my servant

  979. whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight. And I will put my spirit on him and he

  980. will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out. No one will hear his voice in the

  981. streets. A bruised reed he will not break. A smouldering wick he will not snuff out. Till he has brought

  982. justice through to victory. In his name the nations will put their hope. Let's go back to Isaiah 42.

  983. The spirit of God comes upon him in power. You see, Jesus is the gentle servant with power. He comes into

  984. this earth to serve people like you and I. And he has done that supremely on the cross. As Jesus was led to

  985. his death, he does not cry out. As he is mocked and beaten and stripped, his voice is not heard. On the cross,

  986. Jesus is bruised and broken for us. On the cross, the life of Jesus is snuffed out and extinguished for

  987. you and for me. Through his death, he establishes justice as he suffers for our sin and gives us his life.

  988. With his blood that is shed, he makes a covenant that can never be broken. Here he comes with grace and

  989. gentleness, with awesome power for the hopeless and the helpless. Here is my servant given for you.

  990. How can we know this Jesus? How can we experience his gentle grace in our life?

  991. There are three things that will help us to experience the gentleness and grace of our servant.

  992. First, we are to look at the servant. Look at verse 1. Here is my servant, whom I uphold, who I lift up,

  993. my chosen one in whom I delight. God is saying to us again, look at my son. Behold his power.

  994. His majesty, his greatness, his glory. And how do we see him? Well, we open up the word and we gaze

  995. afresh and we read the words of scripture like Isaiah 42 to meditate and reflect on who Jesus is,

  996. to know him and to delight in him. Because this servant is for you, not against you. He will not

  997. trample on you or crush you, but he will lift you up and restore you. See his son, the wonders of his grace.

  998. Gaze and look at the servant. But not only must we look. We must also trust the servant. Look at verse 4.

  999. He will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching or in his word,

1000. the islands, the nations will put their hope. You know the teaching that we listen to most of all,

1001. the words that we most trust is our own word. The message is very simple. Listen to self. We always know

1002. what's right and best, isn't that it? But no, God says, don't listen to yourself. Don't listen to the words

1003. that come around you, but listen to the teaching of Jesus. Trust in his word because his teaching will not

1004. crush you. It'll not snuff you out or break you. His word will heal you and restore you. So he says,

1005. listen to my teaching and put your hope in him. Refresh your trust in the faithful servant. His words will

1006. nourish you and feed you. They are good for your life. So let us together look at the servant. Let's trust

1007. the servant. And then third, let us worship the servant. Look at verse 8. God is speaking. I am the Lord.

1008. That is my name. I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols. That was true. God says,

1009. I will not give my glory to another. You will not worship anybody else but me. But we know who the servant is.

1010. The servant is God come in person. Jesus is God walking on this earth with flesh and bone.

1011. So worshipping the Lord Jesus is not a contradiction. Time and time again, the New Testament writers

1012. command us to praise God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. So the invitation is for us to come and worship

1013. the servant afresh. We sing, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

1014. As we get close to this Christmas, I encourage myself and I encourage us all to look at the servant to trust his word

1015. and to worship him in adoration. For he is a servant who has come to you in grace and gentleness

1016. to renew and restore. Embrace God's chosen servant. Love him and you will not be disappointed.

  1017. Let's pray.

1018. What a marvelous and wonderful gift that you would break into this world by the person of your Son,

1019. the God with all power and all authority to stoop so low, to serve us, to give his life for us,

1020. that we might have life. Father, would you help us, please, to wonder afresh at Jesus.

1021. By your Holy Spirit's power, help us not to trust our own words from within, but to trust your word to us,

1022. knowing that from your word comes life itself.

1023. And may we live lives of worship, of serving you and honoring you and speaking of you as we go into a world

1024. desperately needing to know Jesus, the servant. Help us now, we pray. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  1025. Amen.

  1026. Amen.

  1027. Amen.

  1028. Amen.

1029. Well, we are going to worship the servant as we sing this song together from the squalor of a borrowed stable.

1030. So we come and worship him. Let's stand together as we sing.

  1031. Amen.
