  1. Well, good morning, everybody. It's good to see you all. I bring you greetings from Middleton Baptist Church. Thank you for praying for us and thank you for praying for Carrick tool. It's two weeks away from being a year since we planted Carrick to a Baptist.

  2. So we thank God for his faithfulness to us and time flies and we're very glad that they're doing very well. We miss them, but we're very glad that they're doing well. So thank you for praying for them.

  3. Our passage this morning is Psalm 73. Psalm 73, if you'd like to turn there in your Bibles. Psalm 73.

  4. Psalm 73.

  5. who are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped,

  6. for I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked, for they have no pangs

  7. until death. Their bodies are fat and sleek. They are not in trouble as others are. They are not

  8. stricken like the rest of mankind. Therefore, pride is their necklace. Violence covers them

  9. as a garment. Their eyes swell out through fatness. Their hearts overflow with follies.

  10. They scoff and speak with malice. Loftily, they threaten oppression. They set their mouths

  11. against the heavens and their tongue struts through the earth. Therefore, his people turn

  12. back to them and find no fault in them. And they say, how can God know? Is there knowledge

  13. in the Most High? Behold, these are the wicked, always at ease. They increase in riches. All

  14. in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. For all the day long,

  15. I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. If I had said, I will speak thus, I would have

  16. betrayed the generation of your people. But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed

  17. to me a wearisome task. Until I went into the sanctuary of God. Then I discerned their end. Truly,

  18. you set them in slippery places. You make them fall to ruin. How they are destroyed in a moment,

  19. swept away utterly by terrors. Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord. When you rouse yourself,

  20. you despise them as phantoms. When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart,

  21. I was brutish and ignorant. I was like a beast towards you. Nevertheless, I am continually with you.

  22. You hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel. And afterward, you will receive me to glory.

  23. Whom in heaven have I but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.

  24. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. For behold,

  25. those who are far from you shall perish. You put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.

  26. But for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.

  27. Let's pray for a moment.

  28. I have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you, the psalmist says.

  29. Father, I pray that as we think and reflect on this psalm now in these next few moments,

  30. that you would help us by your spirit to store up your word in our hearts,

  31. that we might not sin against you.

  32. Lord, where there is hardness of heart, I pray that you would bring tenderness and openness.

  33. Where there is hopelessness, I pray you would bring hope.

  34. Where there is sin, conviction,

  35. and where there is coldness,

  36. we pray you would bring warmth and fire.

  37. I ask all these things and for your help in the name of Jesus.

  38. Amen.

  39. Reading this psalm, when I was preparing,

  40. reminded me of when we lived in the US.

  41. It was a couple of years ago and it was during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  42. A time of our lives I'm sure we're all keen to forget.

  43. It was a strange time to be alive, wasn't it?

  44. Do you remember how certain things were very hard to buy?

  45. Like hand sanitizer suddenly was like more precious than gold.

  46. Couldn't get a hold of it, at least where we were living.

  47. Even toilet paper for a time had to be rationed out.

  48. People were panicking in the shops.

  49. It had to be rationed out so that they didn't sell out.

  50. I remember as it all sort of kicked off and it was maximum panic,

  51. I remember trying to get my hands on any sort of disinfectant spray that I could.

  52. And one evening I was on Amazon and I found a tiny little bottle of Dettol fluid.

  53. It was about that size.

  54. Which, you know, would cost about three or four euro or three or four dollars.

  55. And it was like fifteen dollars.

  56. But I panicked.

  57. And I bought it.

  58. And I thought it was a good idea at the time.

  59. I thought, I need this.

  60. Who knows it's going to happen.

  61. There's a lot of uncertainty here.

  62. But as it turns out, we never used that bottle of Dettol even once.

  63. It went under our kitchen sink into a little cabinet.

  64. And it stayed there until we moved out about two years later.

  65. Never even opened it.

  66. And every now and again I would open the cupboard and see it there.

  67. And just think, what was I thinking?

  68. Paying all that money for a small little bottle of Dettol.

  69. But of course, hindsight is twenty-twenty, isn't it?

  70. You look back at the decisions you made.

  71. And you think, how could I have gotten it so wrong?

  72. Why did I think that was such a good idea?

  73. What was I thinking?

  74. Of course, that's a pretty harmless example.

  75. But we all have times like this in our lives, don't we?

  76. When we look back on a rash decision or some faulty reasoning and wonder,

  77. what was I thinking?

  78. How did I believe that?

  79. Why did I do that?

  80. How did I get so confused?

  81. Sometimes things that make total sense in the moment

  82. make no sense in hindsight.

  83. And it's exactly this sort of realization,

  84. this sort of what was I thinking, feeling,

  85. that the psalmist is talking about here in our passage this morning.

  86. Asaph, who wrote this psalm,

  87. is looking back to the recent past,

  88. back to a time when he was envious or jealous

  89. of godless, wicked people.

  90. A time when life as a believer didn't seem to make any sense at all.

  91. I wonder if you ever felt like that.

  92. But now, at the time of writing this psalm,

  93. now with the benefit of hindsight,

  94. he can see just how confused and wrongheaded he had become.

  95. He looks back and says, so to speak,

  96. what was I thinking?

  97. Two quick things to note about this psalm,

  98. just to give us some context.

  99. The first is that this is what is referred to as a psalm of wisdom,

  100. or a wisdom psalm.

  101. The psalms have a huge variety.

  102. There's different types.

  103. There's psalms of praise, psalms of judgment, psalms of repentance,

  104. royal psalms that speak of the coming king,

  105. who will be fulfilled explicitly by Jesus.

  106. And this psalm is generally agreed to be a psalm of wisdom.

  107. In other words, it's written in order to make you and I wise people,

  108. that we would avoid living unwisely in this world that God has created.

  109. Second, a note about the author.

  110. It's Asaph.

  111. Asaph lived at the same time as King David.

  112. And in 1 Chronicles 6, we read that King David put Asaph, along with others,

  113. in charge of the service of the psalm in the temple.

  114. So he was, you might say, a worship leader.

  115. He was the chief music leader in the temple.

  116. And in 1 Chronicles 25, verse 2, it also says that he prophesied

    1 Chronicles 25:2

  117. under the direction of the king.

  118. So Asaph isn't just some random guy who managed to get one of his writings

  119. into the Bible.

  120. He's someone deeply involved in the religious life of Israel.

  121. He's a friend of the king.

  122. He's the worship leader at the temple.

  123. And he prophesies.

  124. And knowing all this about Asaph will help us understand

  125. the crisis of faith that he is having here in these verses.

  126. Okay, so to begin with,

  127. he begins by stating up front his final conclusion.

  128. So he begins at the end, as it were.

  129. Here's what I now know to be true.

  130. Truly, God is good to Israel and to those who are pure in heart.

  131. But as you move into verse 2, he moves back in time.

  132. He says, it wasn't always like this.

  133. And from verse 2 all the way down to verse 16,

  134. he's reflecting on this time, which I think was pretty recent,

  135. when he was having a crisis of faith,

  136. and he doubted God's goodness toward his people.

  137. Maybe you're here this morning,

  138. and you wouldn't express it in such explicit terms,

  139. but you're doubting if God is good.

  140. He puts it this way.

  141. As for me, my feet had almost stumbled.

  142. My steps had nearly slipped.

  143. Because I was envious of the arrogant

  144. when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

  145. He's looking at the world around him

  146. and seeing people who want nothing to do with God,

  147. and they're having a great life.

  148. He says they're prospering.

  149. The word there is the word shalom.

  150. It's this idea of wholeness and peacefulness.

  151. Everything is as it's meant to be.

  152. So they are living the shalom life,

  153. even though they are rejecting God.

  154. And Asaph essentially is looking out at this

  155. and saying, what gives?

  156. Why do the wicked seem to have such a great life?

  157. And this really troubles him.

  158. He cannot stop thinking about it.

  159. Do you ever get that?

  160. Like some problem that starts to annoy you in your head.

  161. It doesn't go away.

  162. It just goes, it warms its way deeper and deeper

  163. into your thoughts.

  164. And it consumes him.

  165. It's all that he can think of.

  166. In verses 4 to 12, he goes into great detail

  167. about both their prosperity and their wickedness.

  168. First in verse 4 to 7,

  169. their prosperity says they have no pangs,

  170. no pain until death.

  171. And their bodies are fat and sleek.

  172. So while the rest of us are working hard

  173. just trying to keep ends, make ends meet,

  174. these guys have so much food, they're fat.

  175. They've got such an abundance.

  176. And they have great health.

  177. They live pain-free lives right up to the day they die.

  178. In verse 5, they're not in trouble as others are.

  179. They're not stricken like the rest of mankind.

  180. It's as if the curses of the fall

  181. and all the brokenness of this world

  182. just skips over them.

  183. everything's easy for them,

  184. at least as Asaph sees it.

  185. Their whole life just looks like

  186. one continuous Instagram story.

  187. In fact, life is going so well for them,

  188. they are openly proud.

  189. Verse 6,

  190. therefore pride is their necklace

  191. and violence covers them as a garment.

  192. They're smug.

  193. They feel free to be violent towards other people.

  194. That's their prosperity.

  195. And then he, from verse 8,

  196. recounts their wickedness.

  197. He says,

  198. they scoff and speak with malice

  199. and loftily they threaten oppression.

  200. It seems that the people that Asaph has in mind here

  201. are people with power

  202. and influence.

  203. Because when you have power,

  204. you can threaten oppression, can't you?

  205. Like a bad landlord

  206. who puts up the rent

  207. year after year

  208. and when their tenants ask for a break,

  209. they just say,

  210. if you don't like it,

  211. you can get out

  212. and they'll find someone else who can pay.

  213. Or like a bad business owner

  214. who mistreats their staff

  215. and doesn't pay them

  216. their full wages.

  217. When you have power,

  218. you can be a jerk

  219. and get away with it, can't you?

  220. Their speech also shows their wickedness.

  221. It says,

  222. they set their mouths against the heavens.

  223. They speak blasphemous things

  224. and speak against heaven where God is

  225. as if there's no one up there.

  226. And their tongues struck through the earth.

  227. This confident,

  228. imagine,

  229. look at that imagery of their tongue,

  230. their speech,

  231. walking around like they're the boss.

  232. They can say whatever they want,

  233. whenever and wherever they want.

  234. And all of this,

  235. their great wickedness

  236. and their seemingly great prosperity,

  237. Asaph says,

  238. has a terrible effect on God's people.

  239. Look at verse 10.

  240. He says,

  241. therefore,

  242. his people,

  243. that is God's people,

  244. turn back to them.

  245. They turn to the wicked

  246. and find no fault in them.

  247. So God's people look at these people

  248. and say,

  249. there's nothing wrong there, is there?

  250. They seem to be just living the good life.

  251. And they're deceived.

  252. They think,

  253. well, I guess living like that is fine.

  254. In other words,

  255. sin looks safe.

  256. It looks advantageous.

  257. And it looks like the only way

  258. to really get ahead in this life.

  259. You ever feel like that?

  260. The way of this world

  261. does not flow in the way of righteousness.

  262. It flows in the way of sin.

  263. And Asaph is saying,

  264. it sure would be nice to swim

  265. along with the current for once.

  266. The wicked say,

  267. verse 11,

  268. how can God know?

  269. Is there knowledge of the Most High?

  270. This is peak arrogance.

  271. God does not see what's going on.

  272. That's what they're saying.

  273. You think God's watching all of us?

  274. God's not watching all of us.

  275. We can do whatever we want.

  276. And it's a might makes right kind of world.

  277. We see that in the news all the time,

  278. don't we, with politicians?

  279. If you can get away with it, do it.

  280. If you can get it, take it.

  281. And whoever has the biggest hammer

  282. gets to push everybody else around.

  283. Let's see where that ends.

  284. Finally, in verse 12,

  285. Asaph summarizes what he's seeing.

  286. He says,

  287. Behold, look,

  288. these are the wicked.

  289. Always at ease,

  290. they increase in riches.

  291. Friends, can you see Asaph's dilemma here?

  292. Can you relate to what he's feeling?

  293. How do I reconcile the wickedness

  294. of these people

  295. with their abundant prosperity?

  296. Why is life so good

  297. for those who reject God?

  298. This dilemma causes Asaph

  299. to question his own life choices.

  300. Look at verse 13.

  301. He says,

  302. All in vain have I kept my heart clean

  303. and washed my hands in innocence.

  304. What's he saying there?

  305. He's essentially saying this.

  306. Why do I bother?

  307. Why am I striving

  308. to follow after the Lord

  309. and live a life

  310. that is pleasing to him?

  311. Why have I spent

  312. all of this effort

  313. fighting temptation and sin

  314. to keep myself clean?

  315. I mean, look where that's gotten me.

  316. Verse 14, he says,

  317. All the day long

  318. I have been stricken

  319. and rebuked

  320. every morning.

  321. I think Asaph here

  322. is referring to a physical illness

  323. in his body

  324. that he has been stricken

  325. with ill health

  326. and also there is this rebuke

  327. which I think is God's discipline

  328. in his life.

  329. Like we read in Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  330. God disciplines his people,

  331. God disciplines us

  332. for our good

  333. that we may share

  334. in his holiness.

  335. For the moment,

  336. it says,

  337. all discipline seems painful

  338. rather than pleasant,

  339. but later

  340. it yields

  341. the peaceful fruit

  342. of righteousness

  343. to those who have been

  344. trained by it.

  345. God disciplines us

  346. not to punish us.

  347. Christ has taken

  348. all of our punishment

  349. on the cross.

  350. God disciplines us

  351. rather to purify us

  352. that we might share

  353. in his holiness.

  354. Asaph knows the pain

  355. of physical suffering

  356. as well as the discomfort

  357. of God's rebuke

  358. and he's starting

  359. to resent it.

  360. Here I am, Lord,

  361. serving in your temple

  362. day after day,

  363. putting in all this hard work,

  364. striving to keep my heart

  365. and my hands clean

  366. from sin

  367. and instead of prosperity,

  368. instead of shalom,

  369. I have a body

  370. that is breaking down

  371. and from you,

  372. rebuke.

  373. And meanwhile,

  374. the wicked walk around

  375. like they own the place.

  376. And their lives

  377. are just going

  378. fabulously.

  379. It's like Asaph

  380. is driving along.

  381. If you think of life

  382. like a journey,

  383. he's driving along

  384. in his car,

  385. but it's a real old

  386. banger of a car.

  387. You know,

  388. when you start driving,

  389. you always,

  390. it's kind of like tradition,

  391. you start off,

  392. your first car is terrible.

  393. It's like he's been driving

  394. for many years

  395. and he's still got

  396. that first car

  397. that's just about

  398. hanging in there.

  399. You know,

  400. the dash is full of lights.

  401. It's sputtering out

  402. smoke and leaking oil.

  403. And as he's driving

  404. along slowly,

  405. he hears the sound

  406. of a sports car

  407. driving up behind him

  408. and he looks in the

  409. rear view mirror

  410. and he sees this

  411. brand new jet black

  412. Porsche just gliding

  413. along in the fast lane.

  414. And as this beautiful

  415. Porsche just whizzes

  416. by him,

  417. he sees the driver

  418. and says,

  419. I know that guy.

  420. That's that wicked man

  421. who lives down the road

  422. from me,

  423. who does whatever

  424. he wants,

  425. who rejects God

  426. and is evil.

  427. And as that car

  428. just glides off

  429. into the sunset

  430. ahead of him,

  431. he thinks,

  432. why does he get

  433. that car

  434. and this is mine?

  435. I should be driving

  436. the Porsche.

  437. He should have

  438. this banger.

  439. This is not fair.

  440. Why is my life

  441. so rough

  442. and his so smooth?

  443. Have you ever

  444. thought like this

  445. as a Christian?

  446. Maybe just quietly

  447. to yourself

  448. as you lie in bed

  449. you ask yourself,

  450. what's the point?

  451. This is so hard.

  452. Following Christ

  453. in this world,

  454. swimming against

  455. the stream,

  456. fighting

  457. outwardly

  458. and inwardly

  459. sin and temptation

  460. day after day

  461. after day

  462. after day

  463. while those

  464. who ignore God

  465. seem to have

  466. it so easy.

  467. For any of you

  468. ever been tempted

  469. to think like this?

  470. You look over

  471. the fence

  472. at your non-Christian

  473. neighbor and say,

  474. man,

  475. the grass really

  476. does look

  477. a bit greener

  478. over there.

  479. I think if we're

  480. honest,

  481. we've all thought

  482. things like that

  483. in the past.

  484. Maybe you're thinking

  485. of right now

  486. when we've envied

  487. those who

  488. reject God

  489. like Asaph

  490. did here.

  491. And it's no

  492. exaggeration to say

  493. that Asaph

  494. is having a crisis

  495. of faith here.

  496. This is no small

  497. thing.

  498. He's thinking

  499. of throwing in the

  500. towel and walking

  501. away and just

  502. saying,

  503. I can't do

  504. this anymore.

  505. He even

  506. considers in

  507. verse 14

  508. what would

  509. happen if he

  510. were to walk

  511. away.

  512. He said,

  513. if I had spoken

  514. out like that,

  515. if I had just

  516. come out and

  517. said,

  518. there is no

  519. God,

  520. just do

  521. whatever you

  522. want.

  523. He realizes

  524. I would have

  525. betrayed the

  526. generation of

  527. your people.

  528. In other words,

  529. if I were to

  530. just say that,

  531. I'd have been

  532. a traitor to

  533. your people.

  534. I'm not going

  535. to do that,

  536. but that doesn't

  537. solve his

  538. problem.

  539. He says in

  540. verse 16,

  541. but when I

  542. thought how to

  543. understand this,

  544. it seemed to

  545. me a wearisome

  546. task.

  547. I cannot make

  548. heads or tails

  549. of what's going

  550. on here.

  551. I love the

  552. honesty of this

  553. psalm.

  554. There's no

  555. plastic religion

  556. in the Bible.

  557. It's real

  558. people dealing

  559. with real

  560. life, following

  561. the real

  562. God.

  563. The turning

  564. point of this

  565. psalm, the

  566. hinge of it

  567. all, is in

  568. verse 17.

  569. This problem

  570. vexes Asaph

  571. until, he

  572. says,

  573. until I

  574. went to the

  575. sanctuary of

  576. God.

  577. Then I

  578. discerned their

  579. end.

  580. That is the

  581. end of the

  582. wicked.

  583. His breakthrough

  584. comes when he

  585. goes to this

  586. specific place,

  587. the sanctuary,

  588. that place where

  589. God is worshipped

  590. and praised as

  591. the creator and

  592. judge of this

  593. world.

  594. And it is there

  595. in that holy

  596. place where he

  597. encounters God

  598. in a fresh

  599. way.

  600. It is there

  601. that he is

  602. reminded of the

  603. truth.

  604. and his

  605. perspective on

  606. life is

  607. corrected.

  608. And he sees

  609. things as they

  610. really are.

  611. Brothers and

  612. sisters, you

  613. know when we

  614. need to come to

  615. church every

  616. week?

  617. One of the

  618. reasons is

  619. because we

  620. need to have

  621. our eyesight

  622. corrected at

  623. least once a

  624. week.

  625. You know that

  626. thing, I

  627. should have

  628. gone to

  629. Specsavers,

  630. that ad

  631. campaign,

  632. of all the

  633. silly things

  634. that people

  635. do because

  636. they never

  637. went to

  638. Specsavers and

  639. got their

  640. eyesight checked.

  641. Think of

  642. church as

  643. Specsavers.

  644. You go to

  645. see things as

  646. they really

  647. are.

  648. In a world

  649. that screams

  650. at you,

  651. that there's

  652. nothing special

  653. about you,

  654. and that it's

  655. just,

  656. might makes

  657. right.

  658. every Sunday

  659. we gather

  660. together as

  661. God's people,

  662. we open

  663. our Bibles,

  664. and we

  665. hear,

  666. thus saith

  667. the Lord.

  668. That's true

  669. north.

  670. That's 20-20

  671. vision.

  672. That is

  673. wisdom that

  674. will never

  675. let you

  676. down.

  677. That's what

  678. happens to

  679. Asaph here in

  680. verse 19.

  681. Now that he

  682. is inside the

  683. temple looking

  684. out as it

  685. were, he

  686. considers the

  687. wicked again,

  688. and he

  689. draws this

  690. sobering

  691. conclusion in

  692. verses 19

  693. and 20.

  694. How they

  695. are destroyed

  696. in a moment,

  697. swept away

  698. utterly by

  699. terrors,

  700. like a

  701. dream when

  702. one awakes,

  703. O Lord.

  704. You rouse

  705. yourself.

  706. You despise

  707. them as

  708. phantoms.

  709. It would

  710. be a

  711. mistake to

  712. read these

  713. words of

  714. Asaph and

  715. think that

  716. he's

  717. gloating.

  718. As if

  719. he's happy

  720. or in

  721. some twisted

  722. way excited

  723. about the

  724. fact that

  725. God in

  726. a moment

  727. will bring

  728. judgment upon

  729. the wicked.

  730. He's not

  731. doing that.

  732. No,

  733. Asaph's

  734. words here

  735. are words

  736. of somber

  737. realization.

  738. He's not

  739. gloating.

  740. He's

  741. realizing

  742. realizing that

  743. whatever

  744. prosperity the

  745. wicked have

  746. now, in

  747. the end, it

  748. will all

  749. disappear in

  750. a moment

  751. and they

  752. will be

  753. judged by

  754. God

  755. himself.

  756. self.

  757. This is a

  758. sobering

  759. truth.

  760. God is

  761. not indifferent

  762. to the

  763. evil of

  764. this world.

  765. Asaph

  766. remembers the

  767. day is

  768. coming when

  769. God, in

  770. his righteous,

  771. perfectly

  772. appropriate

  773. anger, will

  774. come with

  775. his perfect

  776. justice and

  777. put an end

  778. to the

  779. wicked.

  780. And now

  781. that he

  782. sees that

  783. that's where

  784. wickedness

  785. ends, that

  786. that's the

  787. final destination

  788. of those who

  789. reject God,

  790. now he

  791. sees his

  792. own situation

  793. in a

  794. completely

  795. different light.

  796. He goes,

  797. if you think

  798. back to the

  799. car analogy,

  800. he realizes

  801. the most

  802. important thing

  803. is not how

  804. easy your

  805. journey through

  806. this life

  807. is.

  808. What matters

  809. is what

  810. path you're

  811. on and

  812. where you

  813. end up

  814. in the

  815. end.

  816. Jesus

  817. himself

  818. taught us

  819. in the

  820. Sermon on

  821. the Mount,

  822. there are

  823. only two

  824. paths that

  825. you can

  826. take through

  827. this life.

  828. He says,

  829. the gate

  830. is wide

  831. and the

  832. way is

  833. easy,

  834. that leads

  835. to destruction

  836. and those

  837. who enter

  838. through it

  839. are many.

  840. But the

  841. gate is

  842. narrow and

  843. the way

  844. is hard

  845. that leads

  846. to life.

  847. And those

  848. who find

  849. it are

  850. few.

  851. Fred,

  852. let me

  853. ask you

  854. this

  855. morning,

  856. what path

  857. are you

  858. on?

  859. Are you

  860. on the

  861. narrow and

  862. hard path

  863. of Jesus

  864. that leads

  865. to life?

  866. Or are

  867. you on the

  868. easy,

  869. well-lit,

  870. comfortable,

  871. broad,

  872. freshly

  873. tarmacadam

  874. road that

  875. leads straight

  876. to hell?

  877. Can you

  878. see that

  879. it is

  880. infinitely

  881. better to

  882. plod

  883. painfully

  884. through this

  885. life following

  886. Jesus than

  887. it is to

  888. ignore him

  889. and glide

  890. smoothly to

  891. destruction?

  892. There are

  893. only two

  894. paths in

  895. this life.

  896. Christian,

  897. Jesus told

  898. us this way

  899. is narrow

  900. and hard.

  901. No false

  902. advertising from

  903. Jesus.

  904. He never

  905. said this was

  906. going to be

  907. easy.

  908. easy.

  909. It's always

  910. been like

  911. this for

  912. God's

  913. people in

  914. this world.

  915. And just

  916. like Asaph

  917. here, let

  918. us not

  919. lose our

  920. right

  921. perspective

  922. on life.

  923. So whereas

  924. before when

  925. Asaph was

  926. focused on

  927. the here

  928. and now

  929. and sort

  930. of throwing

  931. himself a

  932. bit of a

  933. pity party,

  934. he was

  935. filled with

  936. envy of

  937. the wicked.

  938. Now he

  939. can see all

  940. the way down

  941. to the end

  942. of the road

  943. and he

  944. sees a

  945. fork in

  946. the road

  947. where the

  948. one lane

  949. leads to

  950. eternal joy

  951. and the

  952. other leads

  953. to sudden

  954. judgment.

  955. And now

  956. his old

  957. banger of

  958. a car,

  959. his difficult

  960. life,

  961. seems like

  962. a noble

  963. chariot and

  964. that black

  965. Porsche just

  966. looks like

  967. a hearse.

  968. Friend,

  969. let me ask

  970. you again,

  971. what path

  972. are you

  973. on?

  974. Are you

  975. following

  976. Jesus or

  977. someone or

  978. something else?

  979. Where will

  980. you end up

  981. when your

  982. life's journey

  983. comes to an

  984. end?

  985. And don't

  986. think you

  987. have more

  988. time because

  989. judgment comes

  990. suddenly.

  991. And tomorrow

  992. is promised

  993. to no man

  994. or no woman.

  995. Are you

  996. trusting in

  997. Jesus and

  998. following him?

  999. Have you

  1000. come to him

  1001. for forgiveness

  1002. or eternal

  1003. life?

  1004. Jesus is

  1005. the one

  1006. who has

  1007. been cast

  1008. off from

  1009. God for

  1010. us.

  1011. Jesus is

  1012. the one

  1013. who has

  1014. suffered

  1015. in our

  1016. place.

  1017. And if we

  1018. trust in

  1019. him,

  1020. we will

  1021. have eternal

  1022. life.

  1023. And I

  1024. plead with you

  1025. this morning,

  1026. listen to the

  1027. wisdom that

  1028. Asaph imparts

  1029. to us here.

  1030. do not

  1031. think because

  1032. you have a

  1033. prosperous

  1034. life now

  1035. that that's

  1036. a sign that

  1037. you're okay

  1038. with God

  1039. and that

  1040. you'll be

  1041. prosperous in

  1042. eternal life.

  1043. We live in a

  1044. very wealthy

  1045. part of the

  1046. world, a

  1047. very comfortable,

  1048. easy place to

  1049. live.

  1050. And that is

  1051. surely a

  1052. blessing from

  1053. God, but

  1054. it is not a

  1055. sign in and

  1056. of itself that

  1057. you have peace

  1058. with God.

  1059. The only way to

  1060. know you have

  1061. peace with God

  1062. is through

  1063. faith in his

  1064. son Jesus

  1065. Christ, the

  1066. righteous one

  1067. who died in

  1068. the place of

  1069. sinners like

  1070. you and

  1071. me.

  1072. If you turn

  1073. to Jesus in

  1074. simple faith

  1075. this morning,

  1076. he will save

  1077. you.

  1078. He will not

  1079. hesitate.

  1080. And he will

  1081. put you on

  1082. that narrow,

  1083. difficult path

  1084. that leads

  1085. to eternal

  1086. life.

  1087. Jesus says,

  1088. follow me.

  1089. If you're not

  1090. a Christian,

  1091. then wisdom

  1092. compels you to

  1093. turn to Jesus

  1094. today before

  1095. it's too

  1096. late.

  1097. For those of

  1098. us who are

  1099. Christians,

  1100. let's let the

  1101. wisdom of

  1102. this psalm

  1103. correct and

  1104. calibrate our

  1105. perspective on

  1106. life.

  1107. Ask yourself,

  1108. have I lost

  1109. the true

  1110. perspective on

  1111. things?

  1112. Are there

  1113. times, even

  1114. in this past

  1115. week, where I

  1116. have sinfully

  1117. grumbled

  1118. about how

  1119. hard it is

  1120. to follow

  1121. Jesus and

  1122. how unfair

  1123. it is that

  1124. others prosper

  1125. instead of

  1126. me?

  1127. It's not

  1128. wrong to be

  1129. weary.

  1130. I'm not

  1131. criticizing that,

  1132. to be weary in

  1133. the Christian

  1134. life, but to

  1135. grumble out of

  1136. unbelief.

  1137. in verse 21

  1138. to 22, Asaph

  1139. looks back on

  1140. his own sinful

  1141. grumbling and

  1142. he is ashamed.

  1143. He said,

  1144. when my heart

  1145. was grieved

  1146. and my spirit

  1147. embittered, I

  1148. was senseless

  1149. and ignorant.

  1150. I was a

  1151. brute towards

  1152. you.

  1153. In other

  1154. words, what

  1155. was I

  1156. thinking?

  1157. Having an

  1158. attitude like

  1159. that towards

  1160. God.

  1161. But it

  1162. doesn't end

  1163. there.

  1164. He also sees

  1165. that throughout

  1166. it all, God

  1167. never left

  1168. him, even

  1169. when he was a

  1170. brute.

  1171. Thank God

  1172. that God

  1173. never leaves

  1174. us, even

  1175. in our worst

  1176. moments.

  1177. Nevertheless, I

  1178. am continually

  1179. with you.

  1180. You hold my

  1181. right hand.

  1182. You guide me

  1183. with your

  1184. counsel and

  1185. afterward,

  1186. afterward,

  1187. you will

  1188. receive me

  1189. into glory.

  1190. Asaph's new

  1191. perspective shifts

  1192. his focus from

  1193. envying the

  1194. wicked to

  1195. praising God.

  1196. Whom have I

  1197. in heaven but

  1198. you?

  1199. He asks,

  1200. and there

  1201. is nothing I

  1202. desire in

  1203. heaven besides

  1204. you.

  1205. My flesh and

  1206. my heart may

  1207. fail, but God

  1208. is the strength

  1209. of my heart and

  1210. my portion

  1211. forever.

  1212. So he's

  1213. saying, my

  1214. physical health

  1215. may give

  1216. way, my

  1217. heart may

  1218. wobble and

  1219. fall, but

  1220. God is

  1221. enough for

  1222. me.

  1223. Christian, don't

  1224. lose your

  1225. perspective on

  1226. life.

  1227. However tough

  1228. life is for

  1229. you now and

  1230. however you

  1231. may feel day

  1232. to day, fix

  1233. your mind

  1234. on these

  1235. truths that

  1236. Christ will

  1237. never leave

  1238. you nor

  1239. forsake you.

  1240. He will

  1241. strengthen your

  1242. heart day

  1243. by day by

  1244. his spirit and

  1245. through his

  1246. word and he

  1247. will continually

  1248. guide you

  1249. along that

  1250. narrow,

  1251. difficult path

  1252. and afterwards

  1253. it will lead

  1254. to glory.

  1255. in the end,

  1256. the narrow and

  1257. hard path of

  1258. Jesus leads

  1259. to Jesus.

  1260. Christian, that's

  1261. where you're

  1262. going.

  1263. So don't

  1264. lose your

  1265. perspective on

  1266. life.

  1267. Asaph concludes

  1268. in verses 27

  1269. to 28 by

  1270. distilling his

  1271. experience and

  1272. the wisdom he

  1273. has gained

  1274. through his

  1275. crisis of

  1276. faith.

  1277. And I'm

  1278. simply going to

  1279. end by reading

  1280. these words.

  1281. For behold,

  1282. he says,

  1283. look, this is

  1284. the wisdom I

  1285. want to impart

  1286. to you.

  1287. Behold, those

  1288. who are far

  1289. from you

  1290. shall perish.

  1291. You put an

  1292. end to everyone

  1293. who is unfaithful

  1294. to you.

  1295. But for me,

  1296. it is good

  1297. to be near

  1298. God.

  1299. I have made

  1300. the Lord God

  1301. my refuge

  1302. that I may

  1303. tell of all

  1304. your works.

  1305. Let's pray.

  1306. Father, I

  1307. pray that

  1308. this

  1309. psalm that we

  1310. have now

  1311. reflected upon

  1312. would bear

  1313. much fruit

  1314. in all of

  1315. our lives.

  1316. Whether in

  1317. someone coming

  1318. to trust in

  1319. Jesus for the

  1320. first time,

  1321. or for many

  1322. of us to be

  1323. renewed in

  1324. our trust in

  1325. you as we

  1326. continue to

  1327. follow you

  1328. along the

  1329. narrow and

  1330. hard path

  1331. that leads

  1332. to life.

  1333. Jesus, thank

  1334. you that on

  1335. the cross you

  1336. took away all

  1337. of our sins,

  1338. all of our

  1339. punishment,

  1340. and that you

  1341. secured all

  1342. the grace that

  1343. is necessary

  1344. to keep us

  1345. until we are

  1346. with you

  1347. face to face

  1348. eternally

  1349. in the joy

  1350. of heaven.

  1351. Holy Spirit,

  1352. I pray that

  1353. you would take

  1354. this word and

  1355. plan to deepen

  1356. our hearts

  1357. and our minds

  1358. and help us

  1359. to keep going

  1360. ahead with a

  1361. true perspective.

  1362. Help us,

  1363. Lord, not to

  1364. envy the wicked,

  1365. but to realize

  1366. where that

  1367. wickedness ends

  1368. and to tell

  1369. others about

  1370. Jesus that they

  1371. may leave the

  1372. broad path and

  1373. follow Jesus

  1374. instead.

  1375. We ask all of

  1376. this in the name

  1377. of Christ,

  1378. our Lord,

  1379. who is the

  1380. head of the

  1381. church.

  1382. Amen.

  1383. We're going

  1384. to stand

  1385. in response

  1386. and sing

  1387. in response

  1388. to God's

  1389. word and sing

  1390. in Christ

  1391. alone and

  1392. afterwards,

  1393. Jonathan will

  1394. come up

  1395. to lead the

  1396. Lord's

  1397. supper.

  1398. Thank you

  1399. Thank you.
