  1. So we're going to be reading this morning from 2 Corinthians chapter 11 verse 16 to the end of the chapter.

    2 Corinthians 11:16

  2. Thank you.

  3. Read God's word and then we'll pray.

  4. Starting in at verse 16.

  5. I repeat, let no one take me for a fool.

  6. But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting.

  7. In this self-confident boasting, I'm not talking as the Lord would, but as a fool.

  8. Since many are boasting in the way the world does, I too will boast.

  9. You gladly put up with fools since you are so wise.

  10. In fact, you even put up with anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face.

  11. To my shame, I admit that we were far too weak for that.

  12. Whatever anyone else dares to boast about.

  13. Am I speaking as a fool?

  14. I also dare to boast about.

  15. Are they Hebrews?

  16. Are they Israelites?

  17. So am I.

  18. Are they Abraham's descendants?

  19. So am I.

  20. Are they servants of Christ?

  21. I'm out of my mind to talk like this.

  22. I am more.

  23. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again.

  24. And then down to verse 30.

  25. If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

  26. The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is to be praised forever, knows that I am not lying.

  27. Well, let's just pause and pray for God's help as we hear his word.

  28. Let's pray.

  29. Father, we come this morning with many things on our minds and on our hearts.

  30. Things that weigh us down.

  31. Things that make us feel weak and inadequate and helpless.

  32. And we thank you that we come to an awesome God who meets us in our need to give us the help that we need.

  33. And so we come to you and ask that you would pour out your spirit afresh on us today.

  34. So that we may know your work in our life.

  35. That we may be built up with eyes firmly fixed on Jesus, our strength.

  36. Help us now, we pray.

  37. Amen.

  38. Amen.

  39. Well, we're going to begin by playing a game.

  40. We're going to play boasting.

  41. It's very simple.

  42. You have to try and outdo your opponent by boasting of what you have or what you've done.

  43. So are you ready?

  44. Here's a few ideas to get you started.

  45. You can boast about your salary and your successes, your achievements and your qualifications.

  46. So turn to your neighbor and let's play boasting.

  47. Well, no, we would never dream of playing a game like that.

  48. We would never ever boast.

  49. Or would we?

  50. You see, the Apostle Paul is caught up in a serious and real case of boasting.

  51. And it's destroying the church.

  52. You remember back in chapter 11, verse 5, the super apostles, he says,

  53. I do not think I'm in the least inferior to those so-called super apostles.

  54. They were boasting about how great they were.

  55. That they could charge top fees and draw big crowds.

  56. Whereas Paul, he was nothing.

  57. He had to preach the gospel for free.

  58. And these super apostles boasted of having letters of commendation and great qualifications.

  59. Whereas Paul, he was useless.

  60. He had nobody to commend him.

  61. By boasting of themselves and elevating themselves,

  62. they pushed Paul and the gospel down.

  63. They claimed he was unsuccessful, unimpressive, and untrained.

  64. Who would want to listen to a person like that?

  65. Well, the problem is the church in Corinth had got sucked in.

  66. They had fallen for their boasts.

  67. They had been attracted by these big name speakers and their dynamic presentations.

  68. They liked what they saw, but really gave no thought to who they were.

  69. Rather than listen to Paul and the true gospel,

  70. they were listening to these so-called super apostles and their false gospel.

  71. But Paul won't do that.

  72. He has no time in boasting in himself.

  73. Look back at chapter 10, verse 17.

  74. He's crystal clear, verse 17.

  75. Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.

  76. For it's not the one who commends himself who is approved,

  77. but the one whom the Lord commends.

  78. You see, Paul's aim wasn't to please people.

  79. His desire was to preach Christ.

  80. He didn't need to boast.

  81. The Lord had called him and commended him,

  82. and that was enough.

  83. But it seems things have gotten very serious in the church,

  84. and he feels he has to boast.

  85. So look at chapter 11, verse 1.

  86. He says to them,

  87. I hope you will put up with me in a little foolishness.

  88. Yes, please put up with me,

  89. because he's going to go into a time of boasting.

  90. Verse 16.

  91. I repeat,

  92. let no one take me for a fool.

  93. But if you do,

  94. if you think I'm a fool,

  95. then tolerate me just as you would a fool,

  96. so that I may do a little boasting.

  97. It sounds like he's contradicting himself, doesn't it?

  98. First he's saying,

  99. no, only boast in the Lord.

  100. And now he says,

  101. I'm actually going to do a little bit of boasting.

  102. So what's going on?

  103. Well, I think there's two big things

  104. that this text teaches us.

  105. First, the folly

  106. of those who boast in greatness.

  107. The folly of those who boast in greatness.

  108. Let's pick it up in verse 17.

  109. In this self-confident boasting,

  110. I am talking.

  111. I am not talking as the Lord would.

  112. The Lord wouldn't want me to do this,

  113. but as a fool.

  114. Since many are boasting in the way the world does,

  115. I too will boast.

  116. You want to boast?

  117. Well, let's play boasting.

  118. You think these super apostles are impressive?

  119. Well, I'll show you what's impressive.

  120. You think these are great speakers

  121. with wonderful qualifications?

  122. Well, I'll show you my qualifications.

  123. The gloves are off.

  124. Let the boasting begin.

  125. Isn't that just how the world operates?

  126. The greater you are,

  127. the more influential you are

  128. and the more popular you become.

  129. Whoever can boast the most hits online,

  130. aren't we drawn in

  131. to listen to what they have to say?

  132. And whoever boasts the most sales,

  133. we pay attention to

  134. and we want what they have.

  135. We get hooked on their successes

  136. and experiences

  137. and we follow up wanting their clothes,

  138. their brand clothes.

  139. We follow their diets

  140. and we believe what they say.

  141. It's the same within our Christian world.

  142. Preachers can boast

  143. of the size of their churches

  144. and all the books that they publish.

  145. And churches can boast

  146. of their wonderful music

  147. and their slick presentation.

  148. We get hooked on their dynamism

  149. and their passion.

  150. We like what they begin to say

  151. but we stop listening

  152. to what God has to say.

  153. We love all the things

  154. that they offer

  155. but we forget all that Jesus

  156. has to give.

  157. You see, Paul enters into this

  158. little game of boasting.

  159. Not to encourage boasting

  160. but to expose the folly

  161. of listening to the world's boasts.

  162. Look what he says

  163. to those who boast in their greatness

  164. or those who listen

  165. to those who are boasting.

  166. It's quite hard hitting.

  167. You're a fool.

  168. Verse 18.

  169. Since many are boasting

  170. in the way the world does

  171. I too will boast.

  172. You gladly put up with fools

  173. since you are so wise.

  174. He's being sarcastic.

  175. Those successful super apostles

  176. those impressive speakers

  177. oh they're so wise aren't they?

  178. They're such clever people.

  179. And you're so wise

  180. for following them

  181. and listening to them.

  182. You're so wise

  183. that you even want

  184. to become like them.

  185. Wise.

  186. Don't give me wise.

  187. Give me a break.

  188. You're the foolish ones

  189. for being drawn in

  190. and being taken in by them.

  191. Remember what these

  192. super apostles are like?

  193. Look back at chapter 11

  194. verse 13.

  195. For such people

  196. are false apostles

  197. deceitful workers

  198. masquerading as apostles

  199. of Christ

  200. and no wonder

  201. for Satan himself

  202. masquerades as an angel of light.

  203. It is not surprising then

  204. if his servants

  205. also masquerade

  206. as servants of righteousness.

  207. Wise?

  208. not a bit of it.

  209. You're fools

  210. by being taken in

  211. by their boasting

  212. of their greatness

  213. and you have swallowed

  214. their false gospel.

  215. But not only are they fools

  216. he says you've become slaves

  217. verse 20.

  218. In fact you even put up

  219. with anyone who enslaves you

  220. or exploits you

  221. or takes advantage of you

  222. or puts on airs

  223. or slaps you in the face.

  224. You think all their boasting

  225. of success and greatness

  226. is going to get you somewhere.

  227. It's going to make you something.

  228. No, they're exploiting you

  229. and they're taking advantage of you.

  230. They promise you a better life

  231. but it's an empty life.

  232. They offer you a Jesus

  233. who will give to you

  234. anything that you ask.

  235. And they'll offer you a gospel

  236. that will let you live

  237. however you want to live.

  238. But the reality is

  239. it will enslave you.

  240. You keep coming back

  241. for more and more

  242. of what they have to say

  243. but it will never ever satisfy you.

  244. Like the prosperity teachers

  245. who offer you health and wealth

  246. but by the way

  247. first send on your donations

  248. at the number below.

  249. They become your master

  250. and you will be forever

  251. in their debt.

  252. Following those who boast

  253. in their greatness

  254. will not make you great

  255. you will become

  256. a foolish slave.

  257. Be careful of those

  258. who boast

  259. in their own credentials.

  260. And can I say to you

  261. as a church

  262. in looking for a pastor

  263. be careful of those

  264. who have many followers

  265. and those who boast

  266. of their own greatness.

  267. Now not all

  268. who have great followers

  269. followers

  270. are false teachers

  271. but not all

  272. speak the truth.

  273. Instead we should all

  274. be wise

  275. like the Bereans

  276. who were of great

  277. noble character

  278. for they received

  279. the message

  280. with great eagerness

  281. and examined the scriptures

  282. every day

  283. to see if what Paul said

  284. was true.

  285. I hope you are doing

  286. that right now

  287. that you aren't taken in

  288. by false teaching

  289. but you bring everything

  290. under the word of God

  291. to see if what is being said

  292. is true.

  293. That is all of our responsibility.

  294. So let us beware

  295. of the folly of boasting

  296. in greatness.

  297. On the flip side

  298. then

  299. we have the wisdom

  300. of those who boast

  301. in weakness.

  302. Verse 30

  303. If I must boast

  304. I will boast

  305. of the things

  306. that show my weakness.

  307. Paul is showing us

  308. the wisdom

  309. of boasting

  310. not in greatness

  311. but in weakness.

  312. In other words

  313. if you want to be great

  314. you need to be

  315. weak.

  316. Let's go to

  317. verse 20

  318. 21

  319. the end of verse 21

  320. Whatever anyone else

  321. dares to boast about

  322. I am speaking as a fool

  323. I can't believe it.

  324. I also dare

  325. to boast about

  326. Are they Hebrews?

  327. Well so am I.

  328. Are they Israelites?

  329. So am I.

  330. Are they Abraham's descendants?

  331. So am I.

  332. You want qualifications?

  333. Well I have it.

  334. Culturally

  335. socially

  336. religiously

  337. I've got it all.

  338. verse 23

  339. Are they servants

  340. of Christ?

  341. I'm out of my mind

  342. to beginning

  343. to talk like this.

  344. I

  345. am

  346. more.

  347. You think

  348. these super apostles

  349. are up there?

  350. Well

  351. I'm

  352. above that.

  353. Look at what he says

  354. at the end of verse 23

  355. I've preached

  356. in more countries

  357. I've planted

  358. more churches

  359. I've done

  360. better healings

  361. I've written

  362. more letters

  363. I've met

  364. the risen Jesus

  365. I've made

  366. more converts

  367. I've baptised

  368. more people

  369. Is that what it says?

  370. No

  371. he could well

  372. have said

  373. all of those things

  374. and those things

  375. would have been true

  376. but that's not

  377. what he says.

  378. Instead

  379. he boasts

  380. of suffering

  381. not success.

  382. Let's pick it up

  383. at the end of verse 23

  384. what it does say.

  385. I have worked

  386. much harder

  387. been in prison

  388. more frequently

  389. been flogged

  390. more severely

  391. and been exposed

  392. to death

  393. again

  394. and again.

  395. five times

  396. I received

  397. from the Jews

  398. the 40 lashes

  399. minus one

  400. so that's

  401. 195 lashes

  402. with three strips

  403. of leather

  404. and knots

  405. on the end.

  406. Three times

  407. I was beaten

  408. with rods

  409. Acts tells us

  410. he was stripped

  411. naked

  412. before they beat him

  413. once I was

  414. pelted

  415. with stones

  416. where he was

  417. left

  418. for dead.

  419. Three times

  420. I was shipwrecked

  421. I spent

  422. night

  423. and a day

  424. in the open sea

  425. I've been

  426. constantly

  427. on the move

  428. I've been

  429. in danger

  430. from rivers

  431. in danger

  432. from bandits

  433. in danger

  434. from my fellow

  435. Jews

  436. in danger

  437. from Gentiles

  438. in danger

  439. in the city

  440. in danger

  441. in the country

  442. in danger

  443. at sea

  444. and in danger

  445. from false

  446. believers

  447. I have labored

  448. and toiled

  449. and have often

  450. gone without

  451. sleep

  452. I have known

  453. hunger

  454. and thirst

  455. and often

  456. gone without

  457. food

  458. I have been

  459. cold

  460. and naked

  461. besides everything

  462. else

  463. I face the daily

  464. pressures of my

  465. concern

  466. for all

  467. the churches

  468. who is weak

  469. and I do

  470. not feel

  471. weak

  472. who is led

  473. into sin

  474. and I do

  475. not inwardly

  476. burn

  477. why

  478. did he go

  479. through all

  480. this suffering

  481. why put

  482. himself in

  483. places

  484. where he is

  485. vulnerable

  486. and weak

  487. why put

  488. himself into

  489. situations

  490. where he knew

  491. it was going

  492. to be hard

  493. well at one

  494. level his

  495. suffering show

  496. that he is

  497. the real

  498. deal

  499. he is the

  500. authentic one

  501. and his

  502. message that he

  503. brings is

  504. authentic

  505. we can trust

  506. the message

  507. that he says

  508. if someone is

  509. willing to go

  510. through so much

  511. suffering

  512. if you are

  513. willing to

  514. become weak

  515. it proves

  516. that the

  517. gospel he

  518. preaches

  519. can be

  520. trusted

  521. if you are

  522. willing like

  523. Paul to

  524. put your

  525. life on

  526. the line

  527. time and

  528. time and

  529. time again

  530. it counts

  531. for something

  532. you see

  533. Paul is

  534. saying to

  535. the church

  536. and he is

  537. saying to

  538. us today

  539. you can

  540. believe the

  541. gospel that I

  542. bring to

  543. you

  544. it is

  545. wonderfully

  546. true

  547. I will

  548. die for

  549. you to

  550. get the

  551. message to

  552. you

  553. but there is

  554. something more

  555. and it comes

  556. in the last

  557. few verses

  558. Paul boasts

  559. in his

  560. failures

  561. not his

  562. achievements

  563. his failures

  564. not achievements

  565. look at

  566. verse 31

  567. the God

  568. and Father

  569. of our

  570. Lord Jesus

  571. who is to

  572. be praised

  573. forever

  574. knows that

  575. I am not

  576. lying

  577. in Damascus

  578. the governor

  579. under King

  580. Artax

  581. had the

  582. city of

  583. the Damascenes

  584. guarded in

  585. order to

  586. arrest me

  587. but I was

  588. lowered in a

  589. basket from

  590. a window in

  591. the wall

  592. and I

  593. slipped through

  594. his hands

  595. I didn't

  596. know this

  597. but commentators

  598. tell us that

  599. in the Roman

  600. military there

  601. was a special

  602. award for the

  603. first soldier

  604. who could get

  605. over the

  606. wall so

  607. whenever they

  608. were attacking

  609. a city

  610. they had to

  611. climb the

  612. walls in

  613. their wooden

  614. ladders to

  615. get in

  616. it was both

  617. dangerous but

  618. very courageous

  619. if you were

  620. the first one

  621. to get in

  622. over the wall

  623. and into the

  624. city and to

  625. make a way

  626. through

  627. well that

  628. person was

  629. worthy of

  630. great honour

  631. well look at

  632. Paul

  633. what can he

  634. claim

  635. when he's

  636. telling us

  637. he bottled

  638. it

  639. that when

  640. the going

  641. got tough

  642. when they

  643. sent out a

  644. warrant for

  645. his arrest

  646. he ran

  647. for his

  648. life

  649. rather than

  650. be the

  651. brave man

  652. verse 33

  653. rather than

  654. the one

  655. being up

  656. over the

  657. wall

  658. I was

  659. lowered in

  660. a basket

  661. from a

  662. window in

  663. the wall

  664. and I

  665. slipped

  666. through his

  667. hands

  668. oh I

  669. was a

  670. coward

  671. I was a

  672. coward

  673. I ran

  674. away

  675. I

  676. failed

  677. would you

  678. put your

  679. failures like

  680. this in

  681. your CV

  682. Paul boasts

  683. not in his

  684. excess or

  685. achievements

  686. he boasts

  687. in his

  688. weaknesses

  689. why

  690. because he

  691. knows that

  692. when you

  693. strip

  694. everything

  695. back

  696. when you

  697. chip away

  698. at the

  699. external

  700. facade

  701. when you

  702. expose

  703. his heart

  704. when you

  705. get to the

  706. bottom of

  707. who Paul

  708. really is

  709. he has

  710. nothing to

  711. boast about

  712. only a

  713. cowardly

  714. failure

  715. and as we

  716. reflect on

  717. our own

  718. lives

  719. well we

  720. have nothing

  721. to boast

  722. about either

  723. do we

  724. all our

  725. credentials

  726. all our

  727. successes

  728. and achievements

  729. all our

  730. best moments

  731. all our

  732. proud memories

  733. all our

  734. victories

  735. our

  736. strengths

  737. and our

  738. qualities

  739. strip them

  740. all away

  741. knock away

  742. the facade

  743. and if you

  744. could look

  745. into my

  746. life

  747. you'd see

  748. a mess

  749. but you

  750. know what

  751. it's right

  752. here

  753. in our

  754. suffering

  755. and in

  756. our

  757. failure

  758. and in

  759. the depths

  760. of our

  761. weakness

  762. that we

  763. find the

  764. greatest

  765. hope

  766. possible

  767. verse 30

  768. if I

  769. must

  770. boast

  771. I

  772. will

  773. boast

  774. of the

  775. things

  776. that

  777. show

  778. my

  779. weakness

  780. you see

  781. it's only

  782. when we

  783. embrace

  784. our

  785. weakness

  786. that we

  787. are throwing

  788. ourselves

  789. into the

  790. loving arms

  791. of Christ

  792. who became

  793. weak

  794. for us

  795. for us

  796. for us

  797. for

  798. to be

  799. sure

  800. he was

  801. crucified

  802. in

  803. weakness

  804. yet

  805. he lives

  806. by

  807. God's

  808. power

  809. Christ

  810. went

  811. into

  812. weakness

  813. he not

  814. only

  815. suffered

  816. he suffered

  817. death

  818. and he not

  819. only suffered

  820. death

  821. he suffered

  822. our

  823. judgment

  824. and he not

  825. only suffered

  826. our judgment

  827. he suffered

  828. hell

  829. for you

  830. and for

  831. me

  832. you see

  833. we boast

  834. in a

  835. suffering

  836. servant

  837. a weak

  838. savior

  839. one who

  840. was crushed

  841. and beaten

  842. and reviled

  843. and mocked

  844. and flogged

  845. crucified

  846. to death

  847. so that

  848. you

  849. and I

  850. might have

  851. life

  852. you see

  853. it is in

  854. the weakness

  855. of Christ

  856. that we

  857. find the

  858. power

  859. and the

  860. excellence

  861. of God

  862. through

  863. Christ's

  864. sufferings

  865. comes

  866. our

  867. life

  868. if you

  869. were applying

  870. for a

  871. job

  872. what would

  873. you write

  874. in your

  875. CV

  876. where we

  877. could write

  878. down all

  879. the things

  880. that show

  881. us our

  882. abilities

  883. and our

  884. qualities

  885. all our

  886. qualifications

  887. and our

  888. experiences

  889. in other

  890. words

  891. we get

  892. out the

  893. yellow

  894. highlighter

  895. and we

  896. mark our

  897. strengths

  898. and we

  899. disguise

  900. our

  901. weaknesses

  902. we boast

  903. of our

  904. successes

  905. but we

  906. hide

  907. our

  908. failures

  909. but that's

  910. the self

  911. confident

  912. boasting

  913. of the

  914. world

  915. it looks

  916. great

  917. but deep

  918. down we

  919. know the

  920. reality

  921. we look

  922. deep inside

  923. our hearts

  924. and we

  925. see not

  926. greatness

  927. but don't

  928. we all

  929. know our

  930. weakness

  931. you see the

  932. good news

  933. of the

  934. gospel is

  935. it allows

  936. us to

  937. become real

  938. and true

  939. and honest

  940. about ourselves

  941. we don't

  942. need to

  943. pretend

  944. we don't

  945. need to

  946. put on a

  947. facade

  948. or a

  949. mask

  950. we don't

  951. longer

  952. have to

  953. hide

  954. our

  955. struggles

  956. or to

  957. disguise

  958. our

  959. sin

  960. isn't

  961. that

  962. wonderful

  963. we come

  964. to a

  965. loving

  966. saviour

  967. and we

  968. boast

  969. of our

  970. weaknesses

  971. we come

  972. in all

  973. our

  974. suffering

  975. and we

  976. find a

  977. saviour

  978. who is

  979. weak

  980. for us

  981. and gives

  982. us

  983. strength

  984. we come

  985. with all

  986. our

  987. failure

  988. and we

  989. experience

  990. not

  991. judgement

  992. but we

  993. find a

  994. saviour

  995. a loving

  996. embrace

  997. one who

  998. will treasure

  999. us and

  1000. welcome

  1001. us

  1002. adopting

  1003. us into

  1004. his family

  1005. who says

  1006. I am

  1007. your God

  1008. and you

  1009. are mine

  1010. and I

  1011. will never

  1012. ever

  1013. let you

  1014. go

  1015. the world

  1016. prizes

  1017. greatness

  1018. and we

  1019. listen

  1020. to those

  1021. with big

  1022. names

  1023. and big

  1024. followers

  1025. no not

  1026. greatness

  1027. but

  1028. weakness

  1029. a

  1030. crucified

  1031. Christ

  1032. who died

  1033. for you

  1034. and for

  1035. me

  1036. you see

  1037. it's

  1038. seeing that

  1039. when I

  1040. am weak

  1041. then I

  1042. am truly

  1043. strong

  1044. but that's

  1045. next week's

  1046. sermon

  1047. let's pray

  1048. oh lord

  1049. you know

  1050. you know

  1051. each one

  1052. of us

  1053. and we

  1054. so feel

  1055. our

  1056. weaknesses

  1057. at times

  1058. whether it

  1059. be physical

  1060. or mental

  1061. and in the

  1062. midst of it

  1063. all and

  1064. running

  1065. through it

  1066. all our

  1067. hearts

  1068. you know

  1069. that we

  1070. don't measure

  1071. up

  1072. and yet

  1073. !

  1074. and yet

  1075. we thank

  1076. you for

  1077. the wonderful

  1078. gospel

  1079. that allows

  1080. us no

  1081. longer to

  1082. hide

  1083. or to

  1084. shy away

  1085. but to

  1086. come and

  1087. boast in

  1088. our weakness

  1089. and come to

  1090. a saviour who

  1091. truly understands

  1092. who has

  1093. who has been

  1094. where we are

  1095. and deeper

  1096. still

  1097. and who

  1098. will hold

  1099. us by the

  1100. hand

  1101. and will

  1102. walk us

  1103. through

  1104. and never

  1105. ever

  1106. let us

  1107. go

  1108. help us

  1109. that we

  1110. would not

  1111. boast

  1112. in greatness

  1113. but boast

  1114. in weakness

  1115. boast in

  1116. our Lord

  1117. and saviour

  1118. Jesus

  1119. Christ

  1120. Amen
