  1. Good morning, everybody. It's nice to see you today. I invite you to get a Bible. If you haven't

  2. ! got a Bible, you can get one as you came in, or you can just listen. That's okay, too. But we're going to be looking at John's Gospel. I think if you're using one of the red covered Bibles or blue, it's on page 1088.

  3. 1,088. John is one of the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. And we're going to read in just a moment. So if you could have your Bibles open, John chapter 19 on page 1088.

    John 19 chapter mention

  4. Thanks to Ralph for leading this morning and reminding us that today, Easter Sunday, is when we celebrate the bodily resurrection of Jesus.

  5. Now, that's good news, because it's not just the experience of Jesus. The Bible tells us that if we trust in the resurrection of Jesus, if we trust in him, too, we, too, can be raised from the dead to enjoy eternal life in God's eternal kingdom.

  6. So we're going to read this morning, the account of the resurrection, and then we're going to think together about what its message is to us today.

  7. So John 19, starting at verse 38, this is a record, an account of the burial and resurrection of Jesus.

  8. So starting at verse 38.

  9. Later, so this is after the crucifixion of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus.

  10. Now, Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.

  11. With Pilate's permission, he came and took the body away.

  12. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night.

  13. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about 35 kilograms.

  14. Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it with the spices in strips of linen.

  15. This was in accordance with the Jewish burial customs.

  16. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden.

  17. And in the garden was a new tomb which no one had ever been laid.

  18. Because it was the Jewish day of preparation, and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

  19. So early on the first day of the week, so Jesus was crucified on the Friday, it is now Sunday.

  20. So early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

  21. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved.

  22. That's John, the actual author of the gospel.

  23. So two disciples, Simon Peter and John.

  24. And said, they have taken the Lord out of the tomb.

  25. And we don't know where they have put him.

  26. So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.

  27. Both were running.

  28. But the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

  29. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there, but did not go in.

  30. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb.

  31. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus' head.

  32. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen strips.

  33. Finally, the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went inside.

  34. He saw and believed.

  35. But still, they didn't understand from scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.

  36. Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

  37. Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying.

  38. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb.

  39. And saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been.

  40. One at the head and the other at the foot.

  41. They asked her,

  42. Woman, why are you crying?

  43. They've taken my Lord away, she said.

  44. And I don't know where they've put him.

  45. At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there.

  46. But she didn't realize that it was Jesus.

  47. He asked her,

  48. Woman, why are you crying?

  49. Who is it that you're looking for?

  50. Thinking it was the gardener, she said,

  51. Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him and I will get him.

  52. Jesus said to her,

  53. Mary.

  54. She turned towards him and cried out in Aramaic, a local language,

  55. Rabboni, which means teacher.

  56. Jesus said,

  57. Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father.

  58. Go instead to my brothers and tell them,

  59. I am ascending to my Father and your Father,

  60. to my God and your God.

  61. Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news.

  62. I have seen the Lord.

  63. And she told them that he had said these things to her.

  64. Now, before we think about what this story, this account has to say to us today,

  65. I'm just going to pray a short prayer for us.

  66. Let's pray.

  67. Our Father,

  68. will you please open the eyes of our heart

  69. that we might see the risen Jesus

  70. and understand

  71. what that means for us today.

  72. Amen.

  73. I wonder if you notice that something happened to Mary.

  74. At the beginning of the account,

  75. Mary arrived at the tomb

  76. and is looking for a dead Jesus.

  77. But at the end of the account that we read,

  78. Mary claims to have seen the risen Jesus.

  79. So the question is,

  80. what happened to Mary

  81. to believe that Jesus had risen from the dead?

  82. What caused her to believe in the resurrection?

  83. Well, to help us answer that question,

  84. we're going to look at three things this morning.

  85. We're going to think about the missing body,

  86. then we're going to look at the credible witnesses,

  87. and then we're going to look at a changed life.

  88. So the missing body,

  89. credible witness,

  90. and a changed life.

  91. So first, let's think about

  92. this missing body.

  93. Mary arrives at the tomb

  94. where Jesus had been placed.

  95. People were buried,

  96. usually in a hole

  97. where they had cut into the rock,

  98. and a large big stone

  99. would have been put in front

  100. of the entrance.

  101. And Mary has arrived there.

  102. But something is drastically wrong.

  103. Verse 1 of chapter 20

  104. tells us that

  105. not only has this big,

  106. big stone been removed,

  107. there's no body.

  108. So verse 2,

  109. she came running to Simon Peter

  110. and the other disciple,

  111. the one Jesus loved,

  112. and said,

  113. they've taken the Lord

  114. out of the tomb

  115. and we don't know

  116. where they've put him.

  117. Her conclusion

  118. is simply

  119. that the body of Jesus

  120. has either been taken

  121. or been stolen.

  122. Someone

  123. has moved

  124. the body.

  125. Now notice,

  126. Mary doesn't think

  127. to herself

  128. as she arrives

  129. at the tomb,

  130. oh,

  131. it's the resurrection.

  132. It's happened.

  133. Jesus is alive.

  134. And she doesn't go

  135. running to the disciples

  136. to tell them,

  137. hey guys,

  138. Jesus is alive.

  139. He's been raised

  140. from the dead.

  141. No,

  142. the only conclusion

  143. Mary comes to is

  144. someone

  145. has either

  146. stolen the body

  147. of Jesus

  148. or taken it away.

  149. There's no suggestion

  150. from Mary at all

  151. that a resurrection

  152. has taken place.

  153. So what happened

  154. to Jesus?

  155. What happened

  156. to the body?

  157. Now I think

  158. that's a question

  159. we all need

  160. to think about

  161. this morning.

  162. Whether we've thought

  163. about it before

  164. or we just dismiss

  165. it out of hand.

  166. what happened

  167. the body

  168. of Jesus?

  169. There was a tomb

  170. and there was

  171. a body in it

  172. but now

  173. there's the tomb

  174. and it's empty.

  175. What

  176. happened?

  177. Well,

  178. the writers

  179. of the gospel,

  180. Matthew,

  181. Mark,

  182. Luke and John,

  183. the primary sources

  184. that we have

  185. for this resurrection,

  186. all claim

  187. that it was

  188. a physical

  189. resurrection,

  190. that Jesus'

  191. resurrection

  192. was a bodily

  193. resurrection,

  194. that he physically

  195. walked out

  196. of the tomb.

  197. Now I don't know

  198. what you think

  199. about that

  200. but not everybody

  201. believes that.

  202. There are many

  203. scholars today

  204. that believe

  205. the gospel writers

  206. have got it

  207. all wrong,

  208. that it's just

  209. made up,

  210. that it's not

  211. true.

  212. At best

  213. they'll say

  214. it's just

  215. an invented

  216. story

  217. that gathered

  218. legs

  219. and it's been

  220. rumoured

  221. ever since.

  222. So there's

  223. one scholar

  224. by the name

  225. of Bart

  226. Ehrman,

  227. he's a

  228. New Testament

  229. scholar

  230. and he

  231. explained

  232. the resurrection

  233. like this.

  234. He said

  235. some of them

  236. referring to

  237. the disciples

  238. began to

  239. say

  240. that God

  241. had intervened

  242. and brought

  243. Jesus back

  244. from the dead.

  245. The story

  246. caught on

  247. and some of

  248. his closest

  249. followers

  250. came to

  251. think that

  252. in fact

  253. he had

  254. been raised.

  255. So somebody

  256. started a rumour

  257. and the rumour

  258. has been spreading

  259. ever since

  260. all these

  261. years later.

  262. What do you

  263. think of that?

  264. Either Jesus

  265. was raised

  266. or he

  267. wasn't.

  268. it's just

  269. a made

  270. up story.

  271. So who's

  272. right?

  273. Well we

  274. want to

  275. listen to

  276. the witnesses

  277. of the

  278. resurrection.

  279. The

  280. credible

  281. witnesses

  282. and that's

  283. what the

  284. gospels

  285. do.

  286. They

  287. provide us

  288. with

  289. credible

  290. witnesses.

  291. There's

  292. at least

  293. three reasons

  294. from this

  295. account that

  296. we have

  297. here that

  298. tells us

  299. why we

  300. can believe

  301. that Jesus

  302. was actually

  303. physically

  304. raised from

  305. the dead.

  306. Let's look

  307. at the

  308. three

  309. different

  310. evidences

  311. that we

  312. have.

  313. First

  314. there's

  315. John

  316. and the

  317. strips

  318. of linen.

  319. So some

  320. people will

  321. claim

  322. the body

  323. was stolen.

  324. Thieves

  325. came along

  326. pushed back

  327. the great

  328. big stone

  329. and they

  330. stole the

  331. body

  332. or

  333. that the

  334. disciples

  335. came along

  336. and they

  337. took the

  338. body so

  339. it looked

  340. like a

  341. resurrection.

  342. But look

  343. at what

  344. John sees

  345. when he

  346. arrives at

  347. the tomb.

  348. We find

  349. out in

  350. verse 5.

  351. He bent

  352. over and

  353. looked in

  354. at the

  355. strips of

  356. linen lying

  357. there but

  358. didn't go

  359. in.

  360. Now what

  361. does this

  362. tell us that

  363. there's

  364. strips of

  365. linen lying

  366. there?

  367. Well we've

  368. just said

  369. that somebody

  370. may have

  371. stolen the

  372. body because

  373. grave robbing

  374. or tomb

  375. raiding were

  376. quite common

  377. at that

  378. particular

  379. time.

  380. The linen

  381. strips that

  382. were wrapped

  383. around the

  384. body with

  385. all those

  386. spices,

  387. well they

  388. were worth

  389. a lot of

  390. money.

  391. So if you

  392. were robbing

  393. a grave

  394. you would

  395. take the

  396. strips of

  397. linen and

  398. you would

  399. leave the

  400. body behind.

  401. But in

  402. this account

  403. it's completely

  404. reversed and

  405. flipped.

  406. It's the

  407. other way

  408. around.

  409. The strips

  410. are left

  411. the most

  412. expensive

  413. items and

  414. the body

  415. is gone.

  416. It doesn't

  417. make sense.

  418. Why would

  419. you take

  420. a corpse

  421. and leave

  422. the most

  423. expensive items

  424. if you

  425. were robbing

  426. a grave?

  427. You see

  428. the suggestion

  429. is that

  430. no one

  431. stole the

  432. body but

  433. that Jesus

  434. was actually

  435. raised.

  436. So there's

  437. John and

  438. the strips

  439. of linen.

  440. Then there's

  441. the other

  442. disciple Peter

  443. and the

  444. burial cloth.

  445. Verse 6

  446. Then Simon

  447. Peter came

  448. along behind

  449. him, behind

  450. John, and

  451. went straight

  452. into the

  453. tomb.

  454. And he

  455. saw the

  456. strips of

  457. linen lying

  458. there too,

  459. as well as

  460. the cloth

  461. that had been

  462. wrapped around

  463. Jesus'

  464. head.

  465. The cloth

  466. was still

  467. lying in

  468. its place

  469. separate

  470. from the

  471. linen.

  472. So there

  473. we can

  474. imagine

  475. Peter

  476. running

  477. into the

  478. tomb

  479. and there

  480. he sees

  481. these

  482. strips of

  483. linen lying

  484. where the

  485. body was

  486. and also

  487. the cloth

  488. that was

  489. wrapped around

  490. Jesus'

  491. head and

  492. he says

  493. in great

  494. detail

  495. it was

  496. lying in

  497. its place

  498. separate

  499. from the

  500. linen.

  501. Now why

  502. this intricate

  503. detail?

  504. Well it

  505. seems that

  506. the way

  507. the strips

  508. of linen

  509. are lying

  510. and the

  511. way the

  512. cloth

  513. for the

  514. head has

  515. been placed

  516. are all

  517. suggesting

  518. that it

  519. contained a

  520. body but

  521. now there

  522. is no

  523. body.

  524. In other

  525. words there

  526. was a

  527. body that

  528. was wrapped

  529. up by

  530. these strips

  531. and by

  532. this cloth

  533. around the

  534. head but

  535. now those

  536. strips of

  537. linen are

  538. empty.

  539. You see

  540. no one

  541. moved the

  542. body.

  543. Jesus

  544. was raised.

  545. So we

  546. have John

  547. and the

  548. strips of

  549. linen,

  550. Peter who

  551. goes into

  552. the tomb

  553. and sees

  554. the cloth

  555. around

  556. Jesus'

  557. head and

  558. then the

  559. third piece

  560. of evidence

  561. is Mary

  562. herself who

  563. sees the

  564. risen Jesus.

  565. John introduces

  566. us to

  567. Mary Magdalene

  568. who is the

  569. key witness

  570. in this

  571. account and

  572. she claims

  573. that she

  574. has seen

  575. the risen

  576. Jesus.

  577. In verse

  578. 18 it

  579. tells us

  580. Mary Magdalene

  581. went to the

  582. disciples with

  583. the news,

  584. I have seen

  585. the Lord.

  586. Now the

  587. only problem

  588. with that

  589. is in the

  590. first century

  591. a woman's

  592. evidence was

  593. not counted.

  594. One writer

  595. explains it

  596. like this,

  597. women were

  598. thought by

  599. educated men

  600. to be

  601. gullible in

  602. religious matters

  603. and especially

  604. prone to

  605. superstitious

  606. fantasy and

  607. excessive

  608. religious practices.

  609. That was how

  610. people

  611. considered

  612. the evidence

  613. or the

  614. account of

  615. a woman.

  616. They would

  617. never give

  618. evidence in

  619. court,

  620. it just

  621. wasn't

  622. accepted.

  623. It would

  624. work against

  625. you.

  626. So why

  627. on earth

  628. if you

  629. were making

  630. up a

  631. story about

  632. a resurrection

  633. why would

  634. you have

  635. a woman

  636. as the

  637. first

  638. eyewitness

  639. account?

  640. It wouldn't

  641. help your

  642. case at

  643. all.

  644. So the

  645. only plausible

  646. reason for

  647. including Mary's

  648. testimony is

  649. because she

  650. actually was

  651. the first

  652. person to

  653. have seen

  654. the risen

  655. Jesus.

  656. And that's

  657. why John

  658. records it.

  659. Now I

  660. wonder what

  661. you think

  662. about that

  663. evidence,

  664. what John

  665. saw, what

  666. Peter saw,

  667. what Mary

  668. saw.

  669. Well I

  670. never met

  671. my grandfather

  672. on my

  673. mother's side.

  674. he had

  675. died eight

  676. years before

  677. I was

  678. born.

  679. I've never

  680. met him

  681. but I

  682. have every

  683. reason to

  684. believe he

  685. is a real

  686. person.

  687. I don't

  688. have film

  689. footage,

  690. there's no

  691. voice recordings,

  692. there's no

  693. Facebook account

  694. or Instagram

  695. account that he

  696. was on.

  697. I just have

  698. the eyewitness

  699. accounts of

  700. my mother

  701. and my

  702. father who

  703. have told

  704. me stories

  705. about him.

  706. And I

  707. have a

  708. newspaper

  709. article about

  710. an award he

  711. won for his

  712. garden.

  713. So although

  714. I've never

  715. seen Francis

  716. Walton

  717. Edwards,

  718. I look at

  719. all the

  720. evidence and

  721. I come to

  722. the conclusion

  723. that yes,

  724. it's true.

  725. And John,

  726. the author

  727. of the

  728. gospel,

  729. is providing

  730. us with

  731. evidence,

  732. not that

  733. Jesus was

  734. just a

  735. real person

  736. who lived

  737. way back

  738. in history,

  739. but he's

  740. giving us

  741. eyewitness

  742. accounts so

  743. that we can

  744. believe in

  745. the historical

  746. bodily

  747. resurrection of

  748. Jesus.

  749. It's something

  750. factual,

  751. something

  752. historical.

  753. In fact,

  754. John himself

  755. believed the

  756. evidence.

  757. Did you see

  758. that in

  759. verse 8?

  760. After Peter

  761. had gone

  762. into the

  763. tomb,

  764. the other

  765. disciple who

  766. had reached

  767. the tomb

  768. first also

  769. went inside.

  770. He saw

  771. and

  772. believed.

  773. But,

  774. verse 9,

  775. they still

  776. did not

  777. understand from

  778. scripture that

  779. Jesus had to

  780. rise from

  781. the dead.

  782. Yes,

  783. they'd come

  784. to believe.

  785. Yes,

  786. they weigh

  787. up the

  788. evidence.

  789. Jesus has

  790. been raised.

  791. But what

  792. does it all

  793. mean?

  794. You might

  795. say,

  796. well,

  797. so what?

  798. He was

  799. raised from

  800. the dead.

  801. What does

  802. that mean

  803. for you

  804. and for

  805. me?

  806. Well,

  807. let's follow

  808. Mary's

  809. encounter

  810. with the

  811. risen Jesus

  812. and we

  813. will see

  814. that this

  815. missing

  816. body,

  817. where we

  818. now have

  819. credible

  820. evidence

  821. for a

  822. resurrection

  823. changes

  824. people's

  825. lives.

  826. Look at

  827. the life

  828. changing

  829. impact the

  830. resurrection

  831. had on

  832. Mary.

  833. We're going

  834. to consider

  835. five things

  836. about the

  837. account of

  838. Mary that

  839. impact and

  840. affect us

  841. as well.

  842. First,

  843. notice the

  844. despairing

  845. loss of

  846. Mary.

  847. In verse

  848. 11,

  849. we're told

  850. that Mary

  851. stood outside

  852. the tomb

  853. crying.

  854. As she

  855. wept,

  856. she bent

  857. over to

  858. look into

  859. the tomb

  860. and she

  861. saw two

  862. angels in

  863. white seated

  864. where Jesus'

  865. body had

  866. been,

  867. one at

  868. the head

  869. and the

  870. other at

  871. the foot.

  872. They asked

  873. her,

  874. woman,

  875. why are

  876. you crying?

  877. Now,

  878. doesn't that

  879. sound very

  880. insensitive

  881. and very

  882. unloving?

  883. If you

  884. saw somebody

  885. in a

  886. cemetery

  887. crying,

  888. you don't

  889. need to

  890. ask them,

  891. why are

  892. you crying?

  893. We know

  894. the reason

  895. why they're

  896. crying.

  897. Because for

  898. most of us,

  899. we've been

  900. there too.

  901. Death

  902. hurts.

  903. Death

  904. robs us

  905. of our

  906. loved ones

  907. and death

  908. steals away

  909. our joy.

  910. Mary is

  911. struggling

  912. with a

  913. despairing

  914. loss.

  915. Her

  916. close

  917. friend

  918. Jesus

  919. is

  920. gone.

  921. He's

  922. dead.

  923. And to

  924. add to

  925. her grief,

  926. there's

  927. no body.

  928. There's

  929. nowhere to

  930. come.

  931. You see,

  932. death

  933. confronts us

  934. all with

  935. this agonizing

  936. grief.

  937. And there

  938. is nothing

  939. we can do

  940. to stop

  941. it.

  942. Death

  943. comes

  944. to us

  945. all.

  946. And like

  947. it was for

  948. Mary,

  949. death

  950. can leave

  951. us

  952. with a

  953. deep

  954. despairing

  955. loss.

  956. Maybe

  957. that's what

  958. you've

  959. experienced

  960. as you've

  961. watched a

  962. loved one

  963. go.

  964. The

  965. aching,

  966. heartbreaking

  967. agony

  968. of a

  969. deep

  970. despairing

  971. loss.

  972. loss.

  973. But not

  974. only was

  975. there

  976. despairing

  977. loss

  978. for

  979. Mary,

  980. there

  981. was a

  982. spiritual

  983. blindness.

  984. In

  985. verse 14,

  986. as she's

  987. asked about

  988. what

  989. happened,

  990. she says,

  991. why have

  992. they taken

  993. the Lord

  994. away?

  995. She says,

  996. I don't

  997. know where

  998. they've

  999. put him.

  1000. At

  1001. this,

  1002. Mary

  1003. turned

  1004. around

  1005. and saw

  1006. Jesus

  1007. standing

  1008. there,

  1009. but she

  1010. didn't

  1011. realize

  1012. that it

  1013. was

  1014. Jesus.

  1015. Now,

  1016. Mary

  1017. isn't

  1018. blind,

  1019. and she's

  1020. not stupid

  1021. either.

  1022. She sees

  1023. Jesus,

  1024. but she

  1025. doesn't

  1026. actually

  1027. realize

  1028. it's

  1029. Jesus.

  1030. In

  1031. fact,

  1032. verse 15

  1033. tells us

  1034. she thinks

  1035. Jesus is

  1036. the gardener,

  1037. the one

  1038. who looks

  1039. after the

  1040. area.

  1041. She

  1042. sees,

  1043. but she

  1044. doesn't

  1045. actually

  1046. see.

  1047. Yes,

  1048. she sees

  1049. the empty

  1050. tomb,

  1051. and she

  1052. sees the

  1053. strips of

  1054. cloth,

  1055. but Mary

  1056. can't

  1057. see what

  1058. it all

  1059. means.

  1060. She's

  1061. got

  1062. spiritual

  1063. blindness

  1064. to the

  1065. resurrected

  1066. Jesus.

  1067. She's

  1068. stuck in

  1069. despairing

  1070. loss.

  1071. She has

  1072. no hope,

  1073. and she

  1074. has no

  1075. joy.

  1076. She's

  1077. blind

  1078. to what

  1079. has

  1080. happened.

  1081. Now,

  1082. that can

  1083. be true

  1084. for lots

  1085. of people.

  1086. we can

  1087. know

  1088. information

  1089. about

  1090. Jesus,

  1091. we can

  1092. learn about

  1093. things he

  1094. did and

  1095. things he

  1096. said,

  1097. but we

  1098. are

  1099. spiritually

  1100. blind to

  1101. what the

  1102. resurrection

  1103. actually

  1104. means.

  1105. So,

  1106. despairing

  1107. loss,

  1108. spiritual

  1109. blindness,

  1110. and the

  1111. third thing

  1112. we learn

  1113. from Mary

  1114. is about

  1115. God's

  1116. gracious

  1117. revelation.

  1118. Look at

  1119. verse 16.

  1120. Jesus

  1121. said to

  1122. her,

  1123. Mary,

  1124. she

  1125. turned

  1126. towards him

  1127. and cried

  1128. out in

  1129. Aramaic,

  1130. Rabboni,

  1131. which means

  1132. teacher.

  1133. Now,

  1134. there's two

  1135. ways for us

  1136. to think

  1137. about how

  1138. Mary

  1139. recognized

  1140. Jesus.

  1141. First,

  1142. you could

  1143. think,

  1144. well,

  1145. it must

  1146. have been

  1147. the way

  1148. that Jesus

  1149. said Mary.

  1150. It was

  1151. that kind

  1152. of accent

  1153. that Jesus

  1154. had,

  1155. and it

  1156. was just

  1157. the way

  1158. he said

  1159. it.

  1160. Mary,

  1161. Mary,

  1162. for whatever

  1163. way he said

  1164. it,

  1165. it was just

  1166. something he

  1167. said that

  1168. Mary goes,

  1169. oh,

  1170. it's Jesus.

  1171. That's one

  1172. possible way

  1173. of thinking

  1174. about it.

  1175. But there's

  1176. another way

  1177. to think

  1178. about it,

  1179. and I

  1180. think this

  1181. is what

  1182. John wants

  1183. us to

  1184. grasp.

  1185. When Jesus

  1186. says Mary,

  1187. however he

  1188. said it,

  1189. it was a

  1190. personal call

  1191. of the

  1192. risen Jesus.

  1193. In other

  1194. words,

  1195. it was his

  1196. gracious

  1197. intervention

  1198. in her

  1199. life that

  1200. opens her

  1201. spiritual eyes

  1202. that reveals

  1203. Jesus

  1204. to Mary.

  1205. you see,

  1206. all of us

  1207. are born

  1208. blind

  1209. to who

  1210. Jesus

  1211. is.

  1212. As we've

  1213. said,

  1214. we can

  1215. know

  1216. information

  1217. about him,

  1218. but that's

  1219. the extent

  1220. as it

  1221. goes.

  1222. And unless

  1223. Jesus

  1224. opens up

  1225. our spiritual

  1226. eyes,

  1227. or the

  1228. eyes of

  1229. our hearts,

  1230. we will

  1231. never truly

  1232. understand

  1233. who

  1234. Jesus

  1235. is.

  1236. We must

  1237. have a

  1238. personal

  1239. encounter

  1240. with the

  1241. risen Jesus.

  1242. I'm not

  1243. saying a

  1244. face-to-face

  1245. one-on-one

  1246. with the

  1247. physical

  1248. Jesus

  1249. right here

  1250. and now,

  1251. but that

  1252. our eyes

  1253. would be

  1254. open,

  1255. the eyes

  1256. of our

  1257. heart,

  1258. to spiritually

  1259. see and

  1260. know who

  1261. he is.

  1262. And that's

  1263. what's

  1264. happening

  1265. now.

  1266. Through

  1267. this

  1268. written

  1269. and recorded

  1270. eyewitness

  1271. account of

  1272. the

  1273. resurrection,

  1274. the risen

  1275. Jesus,

  1276. through his

  1277. word,

  1278. today in

  1279. 2026,

  1280. is calling

  1281. us by

  1282. name.

  1283. Johnny,

  1284. listen to

  1285. me.

  1286. Trust

  1287. me.

  1288. Know

  1289. who I

  1290. am.

  1291. Now,

  1292. if you

  1293. have never

  1294. ever had

  1295. an encounter

  1296. with the

  1297. risen Jesus,

  1298. I

  1299. encourage you

  1300. to ask

  1301. him to

  1302. open up

  1303. your

  1304. spiritual

  1305. blind

  1306. eyes,

  1307. open up

  1308. the eyes

  1309. of my

  1310. heart,

  1311. so that

  1312. I might

  1313. see and

  1314. understand

  1315. who Jesus

  1316. is.

  1317. So,

  1318. despairing

  1319. loss,

  1320. spiritual

  1321. blindness,

  1322. joyful

  1323. intimacy.

  1324. You see,

  1325. once Mary

  1326. can truly

  1327. see,

  1328. she

  1329. hugs

  1330. Jesus

  1331. with all

  1332. of her

  1333. might.

  1334. She

  1335. wants to

  1336. be with

  1337. him and

  1338. never leave

  1339. him.

  1340. Do you

  1341. see that

  1342. in verse

  1343. 17?

  1344. Jesus

  1345. said,

  1346. do not

  1347. hold

  1348. on to

  1349. me,

  1350. for I

  1351. have not

  1352. yet

  1353. ascended

  1354. to the

  1355. Father.

  1356. Mary,

  1357. understandably,

  1358. wants Jesus

  1359. to say,

  1360. she doesn't

  1361. want him

  1362. to leave,

  1363. she wants

  1364. to be

  1365. with him

  1366. forever,

  1367. but Jesus

  1368. interrupts

  1369. her and

  1370. says,

  1371. Mary,

  1372. don't hold

  1373. on to

  1374. me,

  1375. because I

  1376. must

  1377. ascend to

  1378. the

  1379. Father.

  1380. Why

  1381. does

  1382. Jesus

  1383. have to

  1384. go to

  1385. the

  1386. Father?

  1387. Well,

  1388. when Jesus

  1389. goes to

  1390. be with

  1391. the

  1392. Father,

  1393. he's

  1394. going to

  1395. send the

  1396. Spirit to

  1397. his people.

  1398. Go back

  1399. with me to

  1400. John chapter

    John 14 chapter mention

  1401. 14.

  1402. Just a few

  1403. pages back,

  1404. John chapter

    John 14 chapter mention

  1405. 14.

  1406. And

  1407. verse

  1408. 15.

  1409. John

    John 14:15

  1410. chapter

  1411. 14,

  1412. verse 15.

  1413. Jesus

  1414. is speaking

  1415. to the

  1416. disciples.

  1417. this is

  1418. before he

  1419. has been

  1420. crucified

  1421. and buried

  1422. and he's

  1423. teaching them

  1424. and he

  1425. says,

  1426. if you

  1427. love me,

  1428. keep my

  1429. commands.

  1430. And I

  1431. will ask

  1432. the Father

  1433. and he

  1434. will give

  1435. you another

  1436. advocate to

  1437. help you

  1438. and be

  1439. with you

  1440. forever,

  1441. the

  1442. Spirit of

  1443. Truth.

  1444. truth.

  1445. Well,

  1446. who's the

  1447. Spirit of

  1448. Truth?

  1449. Well,

  1450. let's go

  1451. back down

  1452. to verse

  1453. 23.

  1454. Jesus

  1455. replied,

  1456. anyone who

  1457. loves me

  1458. will obey

  1459. my teaching.

  1460. My

  1461. Father will

  1462. love them

  1463. and we,

  1464. that's

  1465. Jesus and

  1466. the Father,

  1467. will come

  1468. to them

  1469. and make

  1470. our home

  1471. with them.

  1472. Isn't that

  1473. incredible?

  1474. Let's go

  1475. back to

  1476. chapter 20.

  1477. Jesus is

  1478. saying,

  1479. the Spirit

  1480. will be

  1481. sent by

  1482. the Father

  1483. and the

  1484. Son so

  1485. that we

  1486. might have

  1487. fellowship

  1488. with the

  1489. Father and

  1490. the Son.

  1491. By the

  1492. Spirit,

  1493. if we are

  1494. trusting in

  1495. him,

  1496. we can

  1497. enjoy the

  1498. love of the

  1499. Father and

  1500. the love

  1501. of the

  1502. Son.

  1503. There will

  1504. never be a

  1505. moment where

  1506. we will be

  1507. without him.

  1508. They will

  1509. make their

  1510. home in

  1511. us.

  1512. You see,

  1513. when Mary

  1514. was hugging

  1515. Jesus,

  1516. she had

  1517. him for

  1518. that moment

  1519. in time.

  1520. But Jesus

  1521. could go and

  1522. walk anywhere

  1523. and then

  1524. he wouldn't

  1525. actually be

  1526. with Mary.

  1527. But because

  1528. he goes to

  1529. the Father,

  1530. he sends

  1531. the Spirit,

  1532. the Spirit

  1533. of the

  1534. Father and

  1535. the Son,

  1536. so that

  1537. they could

  1538. be with

  1539. Mary forever.

  1540. Look at

  1541. the end of

  1542. verse 17.

  1543. Jesus says

  1544. to Mary,

  1545. go instead

  1546. to my

  1547. brothers and

  1548. tell them,

  1549. I am

  1550. ascending to

  1551. my Father

  1552. and your

  1553. Father,

  1554. to my

  1555. God

  1556. and your

  1557. God.

  1558. God

  1559. the

  1560. relationship

  1561. that Jesus

  1562. has with

  1563. God the

  1564. Father

  1565. can also

  1566. be our

  1567. relationship.

  1568. God is no

  1569. longer some

  1570. distant,

  1571. absent being

  1572. away out

  1573. there,

  1574. but through

  1575. and by the

  1576. resurrection,

  1577. he is present

  1578. with us,

  1579. giving joy

  1580. and hope

  1581. and life.

  1582. You see,

  1583. when our

  1584. spiritual eyes

  1585. are opened,

  1586. when the

  1587. risen Jesus

  1588. graciously

  1589. reveals himself

  1590. to us,

  1591. we enter

  1592. into an

  1593. unending,

  1594. unbreakable,

  1595. joyful intimacy

  1596. with the

  1597. Father and

  1598. the Son.

  1599. So a

  1600. joyful

  1601. intimacy

  1602. leads

  1603. finally

  1604. to a

  1605. new

  1606. purpose

  1607. in our

  1608. life,

  1609. a new

  1610. purpose

  1611. for our

  1612. life.

  1613. Mary's

  1614. life has

  1615. been

  1616. transformed.

  1617. There's

  1618. literally a

  1619. joyful step

  1620. in her

  1621. run.

  1622. Verse

  1623. 18,

  1624. Mary Magdalene

  1625. went to the

  1626. disciples with

  1627. the news,

  1628. I have

  1629. seen

  1630. the Lord.

  1631. And what

  1632. good news

  1633. it was,

  1634. before she

  1635. was weeping,

  1636. she was

  1637. crying,

  1638. she was

  1639. in a

  1640. state of

  1641. deep

  1642. despairing

  1643. loss,

  1644. confronted

  1645. with this

  1646. death,

  1647. there was

  1648. no hope,

  1649. but now

  1650. she's seen

  1651. the risen

  1652. Lord.

  1653. There is

  1654. confident

  1655. hope.

  1656. Jesus,

  1657. who died

  1658. on the

  1659. cross on

  1660. the Friday,

  1661. was buried

  1662. and is

  1663. raised to

  1664. life,

  1665. is now

  1666. with us

  1667. forevermore

  1668. as we

  1669. place our

  1670. trust

  1671. in him.

  1672. By his

  1673. resurrection,

  1674. Jesus

  1675. has crushed

  1676. death to

  1677. death,

  1678. he has

  1679. destroyed

  1680. the grave,

  1681. defeated

  1682. our enemy,

  1683. the sting

  1684. is removed

  1685. and despair

  1686. is gone.

  1687. He comes

  1688. to us

  1689. to offer

  1690. us life

  1691. in all

  1692. its

  1693. fullness.

  1694. us.

  1695. Now,

  1696. of course,

  1697. none of

  1698. this is

  1699. saying

  1700. that that

  1701. means now

  1702. death is

  1703. easy.

  1704. No,

  1705. there's a

  1706. sense in

  1707. which Mary

  1708. was right

  1709. to grieve

  1710. because death

  1711. breaks what

  1712. is special

  1713. and it

  1714. ruins what

  1715. is good.

  1716. Death will

  1717. always be a

  1718. painful curse.

  1719. Yet we

  1720. know that in

  1721. our suffering

  1722. we have

  1723. the Spirit

  1724. of God,

  1725. the Father

  1726. and the

  1727. Son living

  1728. within us

  1729. to bring

  1730. us and

  1731. embrace us

  1732. with their

  1733. love and

  1734. comfort

  1735. every moment

  1736. of every

  1737. day.

  1738. and I

  1739. want to

  1740. underline

  1741. that today.

  1742. If any

  1743. of you

  1744. are

  1745. suffering

  1746. and

  1747. struggling

  1748. because you

  1749. have lost

  1750. someone close

  1751. to you,

  1752. know this,

  1753. that the

  1754. Father and

  1755. the Son

  1756. by the

  1757. Spirit

  1758. can make

  1759. their home

  1760. in you

  1761. and they

  1762. will embrace

  1763. you with

  1764. their love

  1765. and comfort

  1766. you as

  1767. we trust

  1768. in him.

  1769. And so

  1770. we can go

  1771. with a

  1772. new purpose.

  1773. Like Mary

  1774. we can tell

  1775. the good news

  1776. that Jesus

  1777. is risen.

  1778. He's alive

  1779. and he

  1780. can radically

  1781. change

  1782. your life.

  1783. You see

  1784. our hope

  1785. is not in

  1786. the stuff

  1787. of fantasy.

  1788. What we're

  1789. reading here

  1790. in this

  1791. gospel account

  1792. isn't just

  1793. made up

  1794. nonsense.

  1795. Our hope

  1796. is in the

  1797. bodily

  1798. resurrection

  1799. of Jesus.

  1800. Almost

  1801. 2,000 years

  1802. ago

  1803. he died

  1804. on a cross,

  1805. he was

  1806. buried

  1807. and he

  1808. was raised.

  1809. And the

  1810. ones who

  1811. trust in

  1812. him

  1813. will one

  1814. day hear

  1815. the voice

  1816. of the

  1817. risen Jesus

  1818. and we

  1819. will be

  1820. raised

  1821. to eternal

  1822. life

  1823. in his

  1824. eternal

  1825. kingdom

  1826. forever

  1827. forever

  1828. and forever

  1829. without

  1830. end.

  1831. I hope

  1832. that each

  1833. one of us

  1834. can go

  1835. joyfully

  1836. this morning

  1837. not in

  1838. despairing

  1839. loss

  1840. but filled

  1841. with hope

  1842. and say

  1843. I too

  1844. have seen

  1845. the Lord.

  1846. Let's pray

  1847. together.

  1848. Father God

  1849. help us

  1850. if we

  1851. have any

  1852. doubts

  1853. or any

  1854. concerns

  1855. or any

  1856. struggles

  1857. as to

  1858. the

  1859. reliability

  1860. of the

  1861. resurrection

  1862. that you

  1863. would indeed

  1864. open our

  1865. eyes

  1866. the eyes

  1867. of our

  1868. heart

  1869. that we

  1870. might see

  1871. and

  1872. experience

  1873. the risen

  1874. Jesus

  1875. in our

  1876. life.

  1877. Help us

  1878. to go

  1879. with

  1880. assurance

  1881. that Jesus

  1882. is indeed

  1883. risen

  1884. and has

  1885. come to

  1886. live with

  1887. all who

  1888. will trust

  1889. him

  1890. now

  1891. and

  1892. forever.

  1893. Thank you

  1894. for this

  1895. account

  1896. and thank

  1897. you for

  1898. Jesus.

  1899. Amen.

  1900. Amen.

  1901. Amen.
